Judy,

Jose was born on the second of Nov. and baptized on the 6th. from what I can
read. The very first line says "seis" meaning six and on the following page (I
think it was the fourth line down) it says "dois" of the same month meaning on

Hello Steve,

Agostinho Machado da Silva, de 20 anos, solteiro, natural da freguesia de
Sao Pedro, d'esta
cidade, filho de Antonio Machado da Silva e de Maria Silva?, levando sua
irma Marianna Silva,

Agostinho Machado da Silva, 20 years old, single, natural of the Parish of
Sao Pedro, of this City.
Son of Antonio Machado da Silva and of Maria Silva?, taking his sister
Mariana Silva with him, 18 years old, single, of this same Parish

The Mother's surname is not clear to me as I don't see the (i) in Silva,
but the rest of the letters seem to match.

Hope this helps.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Need help with translation

2016-10-07 Thread bsei2816
I'm not sure of the significance of "I recognize the names on both pages"
in your first post, but the upper-left baptism that starts on the previous
page appears to be a child of the couple you mention in your second post.

Fernando, baptized 5 Feb 1905 in Santa Cruz, Graciosa Island; born in this
parish at 6:00am on 28 January
Legitimate son of Antonio Augusto da Cunha, laborer, and Elvira Augusta,
home worker, both natives and parishioners and married in this parish;
residents of Charco da Cruz.
Paternal grandparents: Antonio da Cunha dos Santos and Rosa Isabel
Maternal grandparents: Jose de Bettencourt and Maria de Santo Antonio
Padrinho: Manuel Maria da Cunha, married, de Administration of this
council (I can't figure out the first word of his occupation)
Madrinha: An invocation of Nossa Senhora do Rosario

That's the best I can do. I hope this helps.

Main ports on the east coast of the United States for Portuguese
immigration are New York, Boston, New Bedford, Providence.

Note on New York: Up until 1890, search Castle Garden. 1891 search the
Barge Office. 1892 onwards was Ellis Island.

Thank you everyone! It is Luz! I have their marriage from several years ago
when I had Joao Ventura do some research for me. Good to have their passport
info.

I have also found their ship manifest, The Mormugao. Interestingly, it ran
aground on Block Island. Hard to imagine them sailing to a strange country and
that happening.

Thank you again for all the help that is given on this site!

Hi Carmen,

Francisco Jacinto and Jacinta de Jesus make part of my extended family.

To confirm Rosemarie's note about the Godparents; they are a couple.

Also Francisco Jacinto's Grandparents origins are from Candelaria, island
of Pico.

PM me if you're interested in knowing more.

Best,

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] NEED HELP WITH TRANSLATION

2016-08-08 Thread Rosemarie Capodicci
You are welcome, Carmen. You are doing fine, just need to know some of the
'other' words!! It's easy to see unfamilier words and think that they are
part of the name. You also have to get used to the Priests and their
handwriting! Sometimes they write things all squished together and then
other they drag them out like: ja de funto, sometimes it jade funto
sometimes it's jadefunto! Once you become familier with your village Priest
and the names in your village you will be okay! You really need to download
the Genealogical Word List and also the Portuguese Paleography from the
AzoresGenWeb site, if you haven't already. It really helps to check out the
abbreviations and letter formations. The double "s" looks like ph, Nossa
Senhora looks like Nopha Senhora. The "th" is very odd looking too. It took
me a long time to figure out my greatgrandma's name as Theresa because the
Th didn't look like Th!!

mine. :)
