John, I know we are off topic here….but I have to chime in that I saw the little village that you are talking about when we were there with our family a few years ago and it is s charming. I thought it would be the perfect place for a honeymoon:) So isolated and quaint! Susan > On Feb 9, 2018, at 8:21 AM, Cheri Mello wrote: > > Thanks foor the info on a present usage. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] What do you call a suburb?
If I may, and just to clarify, the term aldeia was not and it is not presently used in the Azores. The name "Aldeia das Cuadas" in Flores is the name given for Rural Tourism to the old settlement that was abandoned. It became a resourt for Rural Tourism. The place is still called "lugar das Cuadas" and is part of the Civil Parish of Faja Grande. According to census experts there is no clear definition of Aldeia, Freguesia and Lugar. Some say a freguesia becomes an aldeia when the setting is rural. Lugar is a locality, a place, and to be a place it must meet the minimum requirement of 10 houses in a row. Since we're reading/researching Church records the sequence outlined by Cheri is in line with the evolution of said records. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] What do you call a suburb?
Here in the US we have one state with a similar situation. The state of Louisiana is divided into Parishes that are civil administrative divisions , modeled on what existed when the US purchased Louisiana from Napoleon. Louisiana also has a large Catholic population which are geographically and adminstratively divided into parishes. Aldeia (village) is a term infrequently used in the Azores as opposed to the mainland. Lugar do Pilar (when it was a village in the Parish of Bretanha) and Lugareijo da Lombinha was used to describe the hamlet by that name. A monograph by the late Fr. Octavio Luis Reis explains all these differences. Alas, he only had 250 copies printed. I refer to a couple as "moradores na Freguesia da Bretanha, recebidos na Igreja Paroquial de Nossa Senhora da Ajuda daquela freguesia." I hope I have not confused too many people. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] What do you call a suburb?
It's probably going to depend on local custom which varies from the Azores to Madeira to the continent. The dictionaries don't take that into account. Maps produced in America may have larger, colored in dots for larger cities and they may go down to small, non-colored in dots meaning a smaller town or city, podunk blip, or "census designated place." I'm sure city and town vary depending on local custom where you live. Cartographers (mapmakers) have a system from big to small. So from big to small, they are cidade > vila > freguesia > lugar. Vila is NOT a city Vila is a town Cidade is a city Keep in mind that places would go from being aldeias to vilas and sometimes back to aldeias depending on population numbers and available amenities. There are specific amenities that *must* be present in order for a vila to be considered a vila Suburbio is not used in the Azores From: azores@googlegroups.com on behalf of Judy Thompson Sent: Monday, February 5, 2018 10:35:13 AM To: Azores Genealogy Subject: Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] What do you call a suburb? Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] What do you call a suburb?
The words vary from the Azores to the continent. In the Azores, a suburb or neighborhood is usually referred to as a "lugar" in the documents. Freguesia is a civil parish, not a church parish. Let's not go there and confuse people, because most North Americans (who are Catholic) think of their parish as the church that they attend. So just call a freguesia a freguesia. It's what used in the documents. They don't say aldeia in the Azores. I haven't seen it in a document, but I've seen it in the online language class (continental Portuguese). [AZORES-Genealogy] What do you call a suburb?
We all refer to places like Lajes on Pico in concelho of Lajes as a freguesia but what do we call places like Ribeira do Meio or Rua Nova which are like suburbs or neighborhoods in Lajes or for Ribeira Seca in Calheta on Sao Jorge, what do we call Portal or Entre Grutoes? Can't find my English/Portuguese dictionary so looked on google translate and found the following possibilities: suburb = suburbio village = aldeia town or city = cidade neighborhood = bairro Also did not realize that freguesia is actually parish. Hoping Portuguese speakers will have an answer. Thx for any clarification. Judy Thompson -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Azores Genealogy" group.
