This “must be” correct! :)

“I can add one new detail to our Monte research. I found a death entry for
Manoel, 8 months old, died 5 Aug 1793 in Achada. His mother was Maria Furtada
and the father is Pai Incognito. Maria's parents are given as Miguel do Monte
and Thereza Furtada. Given the date, I assume this is Maria from Miguel, the
son. She did have a son named Manoel born 5 Dec 1792, so this is probably him.

(record is image no. 0059 of this set)”

Margaret,
It was really confusing with all the similar names.

What child does your husband descend from? The only child of Antonio
Furtado de Resendes and Maria de Pimentel that I have married is my
ancestors, Antonia Pimentel (m. Joze Furtado). I have these children:
Maria, Barbara, Joze I, Joze II, Hipolito, Antonia, and Antonio.

Hello,

Here is the link to what is suspected as being the marriage record of
Miguel de Monte and Maria Furtada

bottom recordpage is torn, so you can only make out the groom's name as
Miguel. January 17, 1717. I think a lister had found a marriage record of
a possible brother or sister of Miguel de Monte. I got the year and day of
marriage from the Canto index Cheri had posted.

Aaron,

Before anyone asks, it's my own file in Excel that I typed up from Canto's
index (amended by Rodrigo Rodrigues (RR)). It goes from 168x (date can't
be read) to 1729 if memory serves me correctly. It's not posted anywhere,
I have to email it to you. Remember, you'll need Excel to read it.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Anyone researching Antonio do Monte/Agada Rapozo Achada/Nordestinho?

2014-06-14 Thread IslandRoutes
Margaret,
I think you missed my post a couple of days ago. There was some confusion
over whether there was one or two Miguel do Monte's in Achada. It turns
out there were two, father and son, and both married women of the same
name. The births from 1758 onward belong to the son and his wife. It was
sorted out by the birth place of the parents: Miguel do Monte, the father,
was born in Achadinha, and his wife, Thereza Furtado was born in Agua
Retorta. Miguel do Monte, the son, and his wife Thereza Furtada were born
born in Achada. This was also clarified by the use of Mancebo after the
son's name in the baptismals which someone defined as meaning the
younger.

Miguel do Monte, the father, died 16 Jul 1764, Achada, and his wife
Thereza Furtada died 15 Jan 1762 in Achada

Miguel do Monte, the son, died 28 Apr 1810, Achada and his wife, Thereza
Furtada died 9 Nov 1806, Achada

These are the children of Miguel do Monte, the son, and Thereza Furtada:
1-Miguel do MONTE II-2007
b: May 1730, Achada, Nordeste, Sao Miguel Isl.
d: 28 April 1810, Achada, Nordeste, Sao Miguel Isl.
+Thereza FURTADA-10883
b: circa 1730, Achada, Nordeste, Sao Miguel Isl.
m: circa 1755, Sao Miguel Isl., Azores
. . . . 2-Maria FURTADO?-2019
b: 4 May 1756, Achada Grande, Sao Miguel, Acores
. . . . 2-Manoel da COSTA Twin-2022
b: 19 May 1759, Achada Grande, Sao Miguel, Acores
. . . . 2-Isabel FURTADO? Twin-2023

. . . . 2-Antonio FURTADO?-2024
b: 25 January 1762, Achada Grande, Sao Miguel, Acores
. . . . 2-Pascoal FURTADO?-2025
b: 22 April 1764, Achada Grande, Sao Miguel, Acores
. . . . 2-Jose FURTADO?-2026
b: 11 April 1766, Achada Grande, Sao Miguel, Acores
. . . . 2-Joze FURTADO-2005 - My ancestor married Antonia Pimenetel
b: 13 September 1767, Achada Grande, Sao Miguel, Acores
. . . . 2-Maria FURTADO-2027
b: 12 May 1770, Achada Grande, Sao Miguel, Acores
. . . . 2-Pedro FURTADO?-2028
b: 11 October 1775, Achada Grande, Sao Miguel, Acores
. . . . 2-Maria FURTADA-10108

Hope this helps sort it out. If you connect to Joze Furtado and Antonia
Pimentel, then we are related as these are my ancestors. I descend from
their daughter, Rosa Pimentel who married Jose Francisco de Mello.

Hello all,
First, I want to thank everyone who has contributed to this thread. I have
learned a lot about this family and gained some information that I did not
have when I started.

I have completed my research in the Baptismals from 1712 to 1757. I
describe earlier the last birth I found for Miguel do Monte, the father.
The earliest birth I came across for Miguel do Monte and Maria Furtada is
for Maria, b. 10 Dec 1717? baptised 16 Dec 1717? Image no. 0046. I had
trouble making out the dates and the padrinhos. I used the records nearby
to get the year. So, ol' Miguel do Monte had children from 1717 until 1758.

used the surname Monte where it was not found in other records:

Aaron, Thanks for the information on Maria da Costa's family. I need to
add this to be genealogy database.

I believe I found two of Bertholomeu da Costa Furtado and Maria Furtado
Rebelo's children last night in the baptismals for Acahda. This is in the
set 1712-1733. The records are difficult to read, pages are rumbled,
torn. I made them out the best I could.

To all,
Thanks! But, Dan should get part of the credit. He was the one who noticed
that I had married off Miguel do Monte, the son, to his step mother (oops!)
I know that I am my own cousin a couple of times, but this would be just a
little too close. LOL

JR-that gap in the Achada records is problematic. It's possible they married
in a different village, but not having those 2-3 years to compare to is
frustrating. I think we can safely put it somewhere around 1755.

Eliseu,
Thanks for the definition of Mancebo. I didn't know about the definition
pertaining to eligibility for military service. I saw it with another of my
families where the father and son were still alive.

I was curious if in your search in Cantos index if you came across the Antonio
do Monte who also had a son Miguel do Monte in Achada who started this whole
conversation? It's interesting that they are so widespread. I need to look
through some of the work in later years. Besides Miguel do Monte, the father
and the son, and this Antonio do Monte, I did not come across the surname
otherwise.

And, now to confuse this whole mess. I realized last night as I was piecing
all the families together that Antonio dos Reis, daughter of Miguel do Monte I
and Maria da Costa, married Manoel Correia. I would like to verify that
Antonio Correia was the son of Antonio Correia and Barbara de Almeyda. Is that
what others have? If so, he is the brother of my ancestor, Estavao Correia (m.
Anna de Mello) I have some of the other siblings of the Correia family if
anyone is interested.

JR,
Awesome! I am amazed at how the Achada people seemed to spread out all
over the island. When I researched my lines in Maia, it seemed families
were more stationery (marrying amongst the people in Maia)

I also agree, from your earlier notes, that Miguel do Monte, the father, is
son of Bartholomeu Costa and Barbara de Paiva. I wonder where the Monte
surname comes in?

Eliseu,
That Antonio do Monte and Agueda Raposa are the ones I was looking for.
They have the son, Miguel do Monte (not to be confused with our Miguel do
Monte's) who was in Achada in the late 1700s. I found the marriage record
and too coincidental, my ancestor, Manoel Rebello Carneiro m. Maria
Soares, was a widow and remarried. His record is right above Antonio do
Monte and Agueda Raposa!

Here is the link. Antonio and Agueda are on the bottom:
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-ND-NORDESTINHO-C-1700-1746/SMG-ND-NORDESTINHO-C-1700-1746_item1/P129.html

This Antonio do Monte is son of Manoel Correia do Monte and Barbara
Carvalho. So, if there is a connection to our do Monte's of Achada, then
it is not obvious at this point at least to me.

Also, as to Antonia dos Reis...Yes, Antonio Correa and Barbara Almeyda are

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Anyone researching Antonio do Monte/Agada Rapozo Achada/Nordestinho?

2014-06-07 Thread Eliseu Pacheco da Silva
Mel, JR, Aaron,

By the way great search work Mel!!! I would like to have more free time to work
on this. :)

I am hunting down every MONTE I can find on Ernesto do Canto Index. I have done
Achada, Achadinha and doing Vila do Nordeste. Until now I have not find any
MANCEBO.

Regarding to the meaning of the word MANCEBO at that time it is plausible that
it would have the sense of junior. Junior started to be used (at least) in the
19th century to distinguish father and son with the same name…

Mancebo, at that time meant also the boys turning 14 and being able to go to
serve in the army. In the beginning the word meant “slave”, so we can assume
the main sense of the word “mancebo” as someone who is dependant of someone
else. So we may accept “mancebo” as “younger”. In our research it would mean
that 2 MIGUEL MONTE existed at the same time in the same place! So, at least
they were of the same family. Would they be father and son, or oncle and
nephew, or cousins, or… ?

Until now I have learnd that there are (at least) MONTE groups in almost
everywhere: Ribeira Grande: Ribeira Seca, Maia, Porto Formoso, Achada,
Achadinha, Vila de Nordeste, Ponta Garça, Ponta Delgada… The big question is
to understand if they belong to just one and same family…

I will be posting my findings in my web page.

2014-06-07 Thread IslandRoutes
To all,
Thanks! But, Dan should get part of the credit. He was the one who
noticed that I had married off Miguel do Monte, the son, to his step mother
(oops!)I know that I am my own cousin a couple of times, but this would
be just a little too close. LOL

JR-that gap in the Achada records is problematic. It's possible they
married in a different village, but not having those 2-3 years to compare
to is frustrating. I think we can safely put it somewhere around 1755.

Eliseu,
Thanks for the definition of Mancebo. I didn't know about the definition
pertaining to eligibility for military service. I saw it with another of
my families where the father and son were still alive.

I was curious if in your search in Cantos index if you came across the
Antonio do Monte who also had a son Miguel do Monte in Achada who started
this whole conversation? It's interesting that they are so widespread. I
need to look through some of the work in later years. Besides Miguel do
Monte, the father and the son, and this Antonio do Monte, I did not come
across the surname otherwise.

And, now to confuse this whole mess. I realized last night as I was
piecing all the families together that Antonio dos Reis, daughter of
Miguel do Monte I and Maria da Costa, married Manoel Correia. I would like
to verify that Antonio Correia was the son of Antonio Correia and Barbara
de Almeyda. Is that what others have? If so, he is the brother of my
ancestor, Estavao Correia (m. Anna de Mello) I have some of the other
siblings of the Correia family if anyone is interested.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Anyone researching Antonio do Monte/Agada Rapozo Achada/Nordestinho?

2014-06-05 Thread IslandRoutes
I just wanted to update on the research I did last night. I started look
at the Obitos for Achada in the 1730s (going backward). I haven't found
any Monte's as yet.

Then, I reviewed the marriage work I've already done. I noted every
marriage from 1747-1777. What strikes me is despite all those children
born to Miguel do Monte and 1 to 3 wives, I'm not finding them in the
Achada marriages. I might not have gone early enough for group one which
is Manoel, Miguel, Andre, and Jozeph. But I should have been smack in the
middle of the marriages for group two. So far, I've only found Antonio dos
Reis and Felicia dos Reis. Yet, there were 9 children total. Has anyone
else come across the marriages for: Francisca, Miguel, Manoel, Francisca
II, Roza, Maria, and an child, name unknown?

Then there is marriage 3. I have 15 or 16 children in this group (there
are 2 Maria's that I haven't figure out if they are one). I have found the
marriages for Manoel da Costa, Maria Furtado, and Joze Furtado. I may
still hit some of the later born children in the rest of the marriage group
that goes to 1787.

Did many of these people die young? I guess we won't know that until we
get into the obitos. But, it seems there should be so many children
marrying and having children. They should be all over Achada. So, if they
lived to adulthood, where did they go?

A final note on Joze Furtado's baptismal record. His parents are both
listed as natives of Achada. I will have to go through this baptismal
group to see if all those named as his siblings all have parents natives of
Achada. If this group really belongs to the Miguel do Monte with 3 wives,
the father should be listed as a native of Achadinha and the mother from
Agua Retorta, right?

Maybe one of the do Monte researchers has found the marriages that I
haven't seen?

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Anyone researching Antonio do Monte/Agada Rapozo Achada/Nordestinho?

2014-06-05 Thread Eliseu Pacheco da Silva
What I did was to look through Ernesto do Canto Index for every MONTE I could
find in Achada and Achadinha marriages (still doing Achadinha).

So far I have found:

- Achada: Miguel do Monte to (…?...) Furtado. From another marriage I
learned that the wemen kept the mother name Furtado. There is a marrying
Domingas Furtado daughter of the same parents. Her mother was a Furtado. Also
in the re-marriage of Miguel (1725) to Maria da Costa we learn that she was
named Maria Furtado as her mother was.

-   Achadinha: Pedro Furtado or Pedro de Araújo  to a Maria do Monte;
the same Pedro remarying Maria de Santo André after his first wife passed
away); Manuel de Arruda sono f Manuel do Monte marrying Teresa de Paiva; ângela
de Medeiros born in Porto Formoso daughter of Pedro de Araújo and Maria do
Monte (much likely the first Pedro I mentioned)

Then we know the MONTE from Mais and Porto Formoso áreas and the MONTE from
Ribeira Seca da Ribeira Grande… All these MONTE are related...

A remark – I have came across some MONTE that were originaly MONTEIRO.
Sometimes the abbreviation of MONTEIRO looks like MONTE…

I will keep piling up them!!!

Thank you for the information Eliseu.

Miguel's Obito and his stated age of about 80 years, is more in accord with
the birthdate of Miguel in 1734 who was born to Miguel Monte and Maria da

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Anyone researching Antonio do Monte/Agada Rapozo Achada/Nordestinho?

2014-06-04 Thread IslandRoutes
I worked in Achadinha last night. I got nothing in the Baptismals
1714-1718 or so. So, I switched to the marriages. Here is the record that
John mentioned. The marriage for the sister of Maria do Monte:
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-ND-ACHADINHA-C-1701-1796/SMG-ND-ACHADINHA-C-1701-1796_item1/P19.html

I went from 1701-1709, I think (have to check the last page on my table).
I was surprised to find no other do Monte's or children of Bertholomeu and
Barbara. What I did find interesting is the Cura of this church is Manoel
do Monte. I wonder if that is where the surname came from for this
family. I have seen children in this era who took the surname of a
Godparent rather than one of their own parents.

On a side note: I decided to note all the marriages in the 1745-1787
range. The records are difficult to read at times so I decided taking
simple notes on each would be better than going back for other couples
later. So far I've done 1745-1775. I have not seen another Miguel do
Monte. In 1801, Miguel do Monte son of Antonio do Monte (the one from
Nordestinho) married Leonarda de Faria. He died before 1809 as I found a
marriage for Leonarda, widow of Miguel do Monte, remarried to Matheus de
Medeiros Simas in Achada 1809. It's good to have this information because
we can be sure that the obito I listed yesterday for Miguel do Monte who
died in 1810 is not this one who is the son of Antonio do Monte. I think
John is right that it may be the one born in 1734.

2014-06-03 Thread JR
Not my day. Of course I meant Miguel is the son of Miguel Monte and second
spouse, Maria da Costa (married Nov 5, 1725), not Teresa Furtado. So after
all these mistakes, and bopping my head a few times, I re-examined the
Canto index on Achada that Cheri Mello gave us years ago, and here is one
entry which is probably Miguel do Monte and Maria Furtada.

Jan 17-1717, Achada
Miguel ...__ filho de Batholomeu da Costa native Achadinha e Barbara ...__
com ...__ filha de Domingos Vaz e Maria Furtada

When I was researching my Paiva Achada-Achadinha ancestors years ago I also
collected other marriages and guess what names came up?

Feb 4- 1707, Maria do Monte native of Achadinha filha de Bartolomeu da
Costa and Barbara de Paiva com Pedro Furtado, filho de Manuel Carvalho e
Catarina Furtado nats of Maia.

So Bartolomeu Costa and Barbara Paiva are the parents of Miguel do Monte.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Anyone researching Antonio do Monte/Agada Rapozo Achada/Nordestinho?

2014-06-03 Thread IslandRoutes
I had just gone off to find the marriage of Miguel do Monte and Maria da
Costa in 1725! I did find it. A jumbly sort of mess at the bottom of this
page:
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-ND-ACHADA-C-1690-1728/SMG-ND-ACHADA-C-1690-1728_item1/P125.html

I see you have more information for me. So, Maria do Monte's marriage
shows that that Miguel do Monte is probably the son of Bartholomeu da
Costa and Barbara de Paiva. This marriage you listed must be to Maria
Furtada who died 9 Aug 1725. All I can say is he certainly was prolific.

Now my job is to try to figure out if Antonio do Monte fits in this family
or not.

I am going to throw one wrench into the works. I found an Obito for Miguel
do Monte marred to Thereza Furtado in 1810. His son, Jose Miguel Furtado,
was the informant (or whatever it is referred to at the bottom of the
document) I'm not sure about his age. It is either 70 or 80. There isn't
much information except a margin note that a copy was made in 1812.

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-ND-ACHADA-O-1809-1845/SMG-ND-ACHADA-O-1809-1845_item1/P20.html

I found Thereza's Obito in 1806. She is 70 years old.

It is very possible that the son of Miguel do Monte I married a woman with
a similar name because Furtado's are all over Achada.

Still, it confuses matters.

Miguel ...__ filho de Batholomeu da Costa native Achadinha e Barbara
...__ com ...__ filha de Domingos Vaz e Maria Furtada
