2017-03-20 Thread 'Jeremy G. B-C' via Azores Genealogy
Per your requests, I am making available the pertinent parts (demographics)
of a study that I have.

I hope that you will find it interesting - I think some of the statistical
information included is absolutely fascinating. If anyone has Ribeira Seca
ancestry in particular it is a great aid.
I ask only that you not make this file available outside this group.

*Great idea Cheri, we need to figure out how to get them to you. Susan, I
was thinking about maybe donating them to the Freitas Library (after Cheri
gets them filmed), but after what you said, maybe I can donate them to a
Kings County historical organization of some type so it would be available
locally. I recall that Arlene Vierra Marcoux (who was born in the Hanford
Area), published her family genealogy and donated a copy to the Turlare
County Library which apparantly agreed to take that into their collection..
I found Arlene's mother in the SPRSI books I have. So I'll copy her and get
her input. *

Thank you Jeremy! I've just skimmed the first few pages.

The only ancestors I have on paper from Ribeira Seca were from the early 1700s
but I must share DNA with some who still live there. At any rate, I am
fascinated with the history and social aspects of the island and I suppose many
of those were similar in Ribeira Seca and the freguesia my ancestors moved to
(Norte Grande).

And thanks to the gentleman who researched, wrote it and shared.

And thanks to the gentleman who researched, wrote it and shared.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Arruda/Correia, Sao Miguel

2017-03-20 Thread Margaret Vicente
Hello Julzz,

Here's a summary:

The names coincide with the exception of Alexandrina's second name is
Gloria on the record instead of Jesus, as shown on (1.)

Marriage Record N.o 27
Dated, 18th of August of the year 1884

Jose d'Arruda Falcao and Alexandrina da Glora Correa

The groom, 29 years old, single, farmer, legitimate son of Joao d'Arruda,
natural of the Parish of Nossa Senhora das Neves of the Relva place, and of
Maria de Jesus, natural of the Parish of Sao Jose of the city of Ponta
Delgada.
The bride, 18 years old, with her father's consent, single, domestic,
legitimate daughter of Jose Correa and Maria de Jesus, naturals of this
parish of Arrifes, where the celebrants were born and reside.

I also checked the birth records and find that the child of this couple you
referred to as Maria Victoria, was actually named "Victoria" The margin
notes confirm the obit of her husband in 1963.

Record # 245 Victoria (left side)

John,

Tulare does have a good genealogy section for their library. So, does the
downtown Fresno County Library with it's California section (although I had
heard that it might move or maybe has moved to the new, larger Woodward Park
Library. ) Just another option if the others don't pan out.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: SPRSI Records

2017-03-20 Thread Mary
I would be interested in seeing early records of other organizations such
as UPPEC, SPRSI and IDES. These organizations seem to have been more
popular with my family. I found an great uncle because I spotted my
grandfathe'rs name as his beneficiary in one of the UPPEC books. I
havestill a couple of unmarried people that I am unsure of their relation
to me. I do know they were active in Portuguese organizations. Possible
beneficiary information might clear this up.
Thank You,

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Sao Jorge Demographic Study DOWNLOAD BY 3/20/2017

2017-03-20 Thread Mary Bordi
Thank you Jeremy! I've just skimmed the first few pages.

The only ancestors I have on paper from Ribeira Seca were from the early
1700s but I must share DNA with some who still live there. At any rate, I
am fascinated with the history and social aspects of the island and I
suppose many of those were similar in Ribeira Seca and the freguesia my
ancestors moved to (Norte Grande).

And thanks to the gentleman who researched, wrote it and shared.

There is a Medeiros family (I believe from this Freguisia) that ended up in San
Louis Obispo County CA. They married into my line, and I have a cousin who
provided me alot of old stuff on them (like tintypes from Sao Miguel, passports
from the late 1800s, a journal of memoirs) but they are irrelevant to me. I
have to see if I can find the first names as I don't remember.

Renivee,

If it's a 2nd cousin, you know how that person connects to your tree. Put
them in your tree. Do it on FTDNA. Then it will start to split your
matches. See the previous message from me.

You should be in the Brasil project and you should ask Ricardo about what
you believe about DNA for paternity testing. FTDNA doesn't deal with that.
Ricardo has been working to build the Brasil DNA project for genealogy.
He's NOT hunting down deadbeat dads!

[AZORES-Genealogy] Bernardo Cardoso - Flamengos on Faial

Is anyone familiar with Bernardo Cardoso and his family from Flamengos on

Thanks!

Also I would be interested if anyone has any knowledge of Any Cardoso lines

part of the 1700s.

I appreciate any information!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help with Translation

2017-03-20 Thread Cheri Mello
Maria da Conceicao (Conceição with diacritics). If you are looking at a
woman's name and it starts with Con and has diacritics at the end, you can
start to figure out it's Conceição.

The first words of the record says:
Aos vinte e seis (although that last word almost looks like "seil" but if
you pull out your word list, the only number that starts with "sei" is seis
and if you look at the rest of his "s" you'll see that they are rather
closed and almost look like a lower case "L."

Groom's mom: Maria Rosa. Some squishy "s."

Bride: Maria da Conceição daughter of Sergio Silveira, native of Nossa
Senhora da Boa Nova on Pico, and Maria Eugenia, of this parish. Bride of
this parish too.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Manoel Botelho Cabral (˜1845-1902)

2017-03-20 Thread Renivee
Thanks Cherry,

I just got my first high cM match 4 days ago, it is a second cousin and she
doesn't have much info. I have quite a bit more. My highest after that is a
45cM American, who is researching Italian names because that's what he has.
I'm Brazilian and so far everyone comes from Brazil with one couple coming
from Madeira in the 1700's. Most non-confirmed because the "historian" who
decided to compile our genealogy apparently decided dates weren't
important.

So I have contacted those matches with the highest cM's but only one has
replied and he doesn't even have a tree organized! From what I gather from
family in Brazil, a DNA test is only if you want to prove who's your baby
daddy. So they are kind of frowned upon. I guess I'll have to see how I can
afford to fly to Brazil and buy a bunch of kits for my relatives to do
tests for me.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Marriage Translation

2017-03-20 Thread linda
Hi Bob,

I think you've got all the essential info, but bride's father is probably
Manuel *Caetano* da Rocha.

Here' what I see in the record:

4 Sept 1876, Santa Barbara, Terceira, no impediments

Antonio Machado d'a Costa: 31 years old, a single man, workman
(trabalhador); native, resident, and baptized in Doze Ribeiras; legitimate
son of Manoel Machado d'a Costa and Maria Joaquina natives of Doze Rebeiras

Marianna Victorina Martins: 26 years old, a single woman, dressmaker
(costureria); native, resident and baptized in Santa Barbara; legitimate
daughter of Manoel Caetano d'a Rocha and Maria Victorina natives of Santa
Barbara

witnesses: Joaquim de Freitas (who signed it) and Jose Machado Lourenco,
farmers, residents of Santa Barbara

hope that helps,

Linda

Thanks Margaret-- that is fascinating.

I have a follow up question on Jeremy's original question. I assume the

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Va / Via in margin of Calheta Records

2017-03-20 Thread Margaret Vicente
Hi Linda,

Certifications on baptism at that time served, according to my own
experience, the same purpose as the obits ones did. You will note that
only a few of the birth records were certified. Were they to be used as
proof of marriage, then most if not all records should have at least one
certification.

Yes, it could be inheritance or other. A good example of other, would be
"Army" enlistment. Some times proof of death had to be provided on "
government issued drafts" because parents gave children the same first
names they used to draft even the "dead" ones. Inter island/mainland
travel movement also required identification in those days
