soon as I get my internet back up I will download them this is fantastic.
Thank you both so much for your hard risk and generosity. Making these records

Guys, please call these things by the proper name. They are NOT censuses.
Censuses are for enumeration of a population, usually done by a goverment
entity. Censuses don't exist for the Azores. These are confession rolls (rólos
de confissão or róis/confessado). The priest went from house to house making
sure everyone everyone had done confession and received communion (I think). He
listed their names, beginning with the head of the household (usually the man),
then the wife, then the kids. He lists their ages. Because it happens to list
households, it can function like a census for our use, but it is NOT a census.
It's a confession roll, used by the Catholic church, not a census mandated by
the government.

I don't want new researchers thinking there's censuses out there for the
Azores. There's not.

And because confession rolls are NOT consider vital records (birth, marriage,
death) not many were collected. Graciosa had the most. I think a couple of
freguesias on Terceira. And I guess this freguesia on Sao Jorge. So most
freguesia do NOT have them online.

To see what the CCA holds, you can go to Tombo.pt/en, type in your freguesia,
and click on it. It will tell you what is held by the CCA.

Santa Cruz on Graciosa has baptisms, marriages, deaths, acknowledgements
(claiming parentage of the baby) and confession rolls.

Yes, Confessional Rols. Cheri all of the villages on Sao Jorge except Norte
Pequeno, Santo Antão, and a few in the council of Velas have Rols. It's like
2/3. Same for Pico.  Unfortunately I only know of 2 on Sao Jorge, and 2 on Pico
that are available digitally - none of those for are available for everyone to
see on the CCA however.  There is a university in mainland Portugal that has
the rest.  The professor who created Minho CITCEM has an inventory of all the
towns whose rols survive and where they are housed.  There are something like
32 rols for Sao Jorge alone (I.e. Ribeira Seca and Velas start in 1757 some
others might too, and go on up). The university has a monopoly of these
rols-for the central island group at least, but it's a shame that they aren't
publicly researchable a real shame.

2016-12-29 Thread 'Jeremy G. B-C' via Azores Genealogy
The following was on a headstone:

Aqui jazem os restos mortaes do sn Antonio Moniz Barretto A sua saudosa
memoria mandou collocar esta lapide a sua legataria Izabel Joaquina Flores

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=172103859

Can anyone tell me what the deceased's relationship was to Izabel Joaquina
Flores? Izabel was my ancestor and I was very excited to find this!

Interestingly I cannot find his birth or death records. Only a tombstone
exists! Bazaar! I even checked the next villages over.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Inscription translation

2016-12-30 Thread 'Jeremy G. B-C' via Azores Genealogy
Is it at all possible that in this situation, legataria is like legitimate
mother or perhaps a kin relation of some sort? For what purpose would a
tombstone say someone's name like that?
I need to see what other stones I know of that have stuff like that. It seems
to me if seen that elsewhere. I have a hunch there is a double meaning, because
I am 100% sure there was only one Isabel Joaquina Flores in Calheta at that
time, but she died before him by a few years. (Flores is unique to my family,
and I have confessional rols proving nobody else in the area had this name) if
this is the case, which I truly believe it is, I has to have some sort of
double meaning because someone deceased could not inherit!

I am HIGHLY Skeptical that you have the right passenger list.

Have you tken a look at this???

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=155211263&ref=acom

No name change if this is the person listed on passanger list. No idea I
didnt make sure, but same unusual name...

You need to go back to the beginning and analyze every reord under the
changed name first, so you have more stuff to verify more information.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Name Abbreviation on Marriage Record

2017-01-05 Thread 'Jeremy G. B-C' via Azores Genealogy
Hello!

I just unearthed the marriage record of one set of ancestors of mine. It
is fairly neat writing and I don't have much trouble deciphering most of it.

I can make out that on November 27th 1779, Antonio de Quadros son of Antao
Pereira de Quadros and Maria Ascencao (deasesed) married to Anna Pereira de
Borba daughter of Simao Pereira de Cunha (deceased) and Maria (deceased).

I *am* however having trouble making out Anna (the bride's) mother's last
name Gil? It looks like an abreviation for something whatever it is
I am certiain I am misreading it. If anyone has any thoughts on it please
let me know!

The only other thing I would like to verify is that the grooms mother is
deceased, not the grooms father. I usually see defuncto after the parents
names, but in this case it is before her name am I correct that she is
the one that is deceased, and that Antao is living?

Thank you very much!

In some freguisias some yearly Rols are complete and some yearly Rols cover

can't even find the street, chances are that particular Rol did not cover that

[AZORES-Genealogy] San Luis Obispo Mission Marriages 1877-1902

Hello!

I just got copies of, and am offering to do lookups in San Louis Obispo
Mission De Tolosa Marriages 1877-1902!
These are different than the records in the civil register in that these
(the church records) all give the Island the person was a native of, and
the parents names. These have helped me tremendously, and I just coped the
whole run of 300 or so pages, and uploaded them to dropbox for those who
are interested. There are several thousand entries.

2017-02-14 Thread 'Jeremy G. B-C' via Azores Genealogy
Yes - that makes it sort of frustrating for us pourtugese researchers.  Since
my family was 100% parishioners of the Old Mission church in San Luis Obispo
(as almost all azoreans in the county were), I have dealt with lots of these
records.  Because the priests were spanish, and recorded everything in spanish
rather than latin or something like you said, it is annoying because they would
put 'Machado Reis' down as 'Macada Reyes' etc. It is my understanding that all
CA missions did this - or at least so did Monterrey and San Jose.  I have some
of the Old Mission Obispo Tolosa Records as late as the 1940's and they are
also in Spanish! ,

I'm sure Mr. Almeida's list is not comprehensive. As titled, he found only
anglicized names in California. None from New England, Canada, nor Hawaii, etc.

Others may have found different anglicizations (sp) in their research.

2017-02-17 Thread 'Jeremy G. B-C' via Azores Genealogy
DURATION OF INTERNMENT BEFORE EXHUMATION:

THIS IS FROM 2017

Sao Miguel Council de Ponta Delgada, (and it looks like pretty much the
rest of the island): extended to 30 Years death
Pico, Graciosa, Faial: extended to 30 Years after death in some
juristictions, or dependent upon "Families need for space in their
designated lot" in others
Flores: dependent upon "Families need for space in their designated lot"
(MANY GRAVES EXIST ON FLORES AND CORVO FROM 19th CENTURY. MORE SO THAN ANY
OTHER ISLANDS)
Sao Jorge Councils de Calheta e Velas: dependent upon "Families need for
space in their designated lot"

It appears that the "7 years" commonly discussed here is no longer in
effect.

In Sao Miguel for example, I have been informaed that people who died in
1987 are presently being exhumed, and the graves being re-opened.

Thought this may interest some.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: More Villages Online Now - Azorean Gravestone Project

2017-02-17 Thread 'Jeremy G. B-C' via Azores Genealogy
Well,

Since I have been spending the time to try and get the tombstones online
for the Azores, I thought of the idea that it would be super easy if I just
reached out to the source directly.
So I contacted either the cemetery (if it was big enough that I could find
the email address of a specific person to contact) or the Council itself.

I got a great many replies to my query about what their current exhumation
period / burial duration was and whether or not they would be willing to
send copies of cemetery records, and I explained what I was doing with it.
It seems sometimes the Council sets an exhumation dates, and sometimes its
just the individual church: very locality specific. Anyways, several of
them actually sent me rosters of all the people that have been interred in
recent years that they had computerized, and rosters of people whose
remains were 'set for exhumation' (unless the family takes action), one had
the records in an excel going back a hundred years, and other
charts/diagrams that they had and were willing to share. Of course, most
of my queries went unanswered, but I did get alot of data, and information
out of it. Only one actually responded with a decline to provide info, the
rest were extraordinarily helpful. That is how I put together the ranges I
previously posted...

[AZORES-Genealogy] Mysterious Terra Family From Pico

2017-02-27 Thread 'Jeremy G. B-C' via Azores Genealogy
Mysterious Terra Family From Pico

Hello!

I have 3 immigrant ancetors from the Azores, I have been successful in trading
the lineage of two of them in Sao Jorge. The third, my grandmother, came from
Pico and is a complete mystery - which is truly unbelivable given the abnormal
names of her brothers, and the extent of the info we Do have.  Just can't seem
to find any records on Pico whatsoever for them.

My grandmother's name was Maria Emilia Rosa da Terra. She was born somewhere on
Pico in or about April/May 1854-1860.  Most records give April 22nd 1855.
, but 1858 is prevelant too.  She came to the United States in the early to mid
1870s settling in California.

She had two brothers named Augusto Garcia Terra and Gauldencio Garcia Terra.
Gauldencio married in Massachusetts in 1873, Augusto never married. Both
brothers had made it to California by 1879 where they were Naturalized in San
Luis Obispo. They were whalers.

Our working hypothesis is that they may have originated in the Santa Lucia or
Bandeiras area.  They were FULL siblings.

The parents were Joao Garcia de Terra and Maria Rosa. NOT Manuel and Maria as
one record for Gaudencio falsely states.

#) Gauldencio or Gaudencio "Gaides" (various spellings) Garcia Terra was born
approx. NOVEMBER 1838-1840. He died in 1916 in SLO County CA.

#) Augusto Garcia Terra was born in abt. 1852, and died in 1929 in SLO CA.

#) Maria was born about April 1854-1860 and died in SLO County CA in 1942. Her
married name was Reis.

We have an extraordinary amount of information, and documentation on them in
the United States, but nothing from Pico.

If anyone can render ANY assistance, it would be gratefully appreciated.  Also
if anyone has the name Gauldencio or Gauldencio or Augusto or Joao Garcia Terra
in their databases I would be interested to know!

Thank you

Jeremy

The Emma on No. 23 is the beneficiary of Antonio D. Vargas, and the Inacia

the other (23) is simply listed as a Resident of Concord.  Women arent members

beneficiaries, so if you are related to the above mentioned two people or have

[AZORES-Genealogy] Va / Via in margin of Calheta Records

2017-03-06 Thread 'Jeremy G. B-C' via Azores Genealogy
Hello,

I am looking through some records in Calheta on Sao Jorge, and found that
every few entries in the baptismal book the priest adds a little Va/Via in
the margin.

Examples include:

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SJR-CH-CALHETA-B-1803-1812/SJR-CH-CALHETA-B-1803-1812_item1/P78.html
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SJR-CH-CALHETA-B-1803-1812/SJR-CH-CALHETA-B-1803-1812_item1/P77.html

The same notation can be found in the villages death books:
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SJR-CH-CALHETA-O-1782-1818/SJR-CH-CALHETA-O-1782-1818_item1/P175.html

This is repeated every handful of entries. I would love to know what the
priest was denoting, or counting! Any help in the matter would be greatly
appreciated.

I have followed the instructions provided about mailing in to the Dept of
State Office of Law Enforcement Liason for a "Post 1925 passport of a

Before actually sending off the letter I typed up along with the death cert
and photo ID, I phoned their office. The lady did not sound particularly
knowledgeable about requests for deceased persons, and was unable to locate
information on procedure for my particular case, but she said "Third part
requests MUST be certified, and therefore you are obligated to pay a $150
search fee". WHAT CROOKS! $150 for a damn passport? As you would say - to
much vinho, but they arent even Azorean!

So my question is this: Have you ever actually sent in for a passport in
this situation? With what results?

More than anything I just want the date he left the US to go back home
(permanently), and I want his photograph above all!

A VERY frustrated Jeremy

Yes, that collection has the consular death certificates in it, and they is
where I found him. Subsequently providing me with the dates and issue number of
his passport.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Returning Home to Azores from US

2017-03-14 Thread 'Jeremy G. B-C' via Azores Genealogy
The privacy laws mentioned so not apply in cases where the person listed on the
record is deceased - assuming you are able to provide a death certificate (I
can provide the consular certificates of death of an American citizen abroad)

Unfortunately it was finally in 1930.

Below is a copy of the request I was planning on sending out prior to the phone
conversation

"To whom it may concern,

I am requesting a copy of passport No. 233977 of May 13th, 1930. It is for a
Mr. Antonio Machado Cardoza AKA Cardozo/Cardoso. He was born on January 5th,
1879 in Sao Thiago, Faja Dos Cubres, Ribeira Seca, St. George, Azores, became a
citizen of the United States in 1904 at the San Luis Obispo, CA Superior
Court., and died in Sao Thiago, Faja Dos Cubres, Ribeira Seca, St. George,
Azores on January 26th 1933. The deceased was my great-great-uncle. Enclosed
you will find a copy of a report of his death from the United States Consular
Service, and of both sides of my government-issued photo identification. As he
is deceased, I believe this third-party request for the record of a deceased
person falls under FOIA. I do not require this copy to be apostilled or
certified."

My uncle was in the US by like 1902 but was gone someone shortly following
1911. He is on the 1910 cencus in Morro Bay, CA.

Thanks,

Jeremy

[AZORES-Genealogy] Va / Via in margin of Calheta Records

2017-03-20 Thread 'Jeremy G. B-C' via Azores Genealogy
Hello,

I am looking through some records in Calheta on Sao Jorge, and found that every
few entries in the baptismal book the priest adds a little Va/Via in the
margin.

Examples include:

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SJR-CH-CALHETA-B-1803-1812/SJR-CH-CALHETA-B-1803-1812_item1/P78.html
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SJR-CH-CALHETA-B-1803-1812/SJR-CH-CALHETA-B-1803-1812_item1/P77.html

The same notation can be found in the villages death books:
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SJR-CH-CALHETA-O-1782-1818/SJR-CH-CALHETA-O-1782-1818_item1/P175.html

This is repeated every handful of entries. I would love to know what the priest
was denoting, or counting! Any help in the matter would be greatly appreciated.

,

Jeremy

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Jose de Medeiros of Ilha Sao Miguel

2017-03-20 Thread 'Jeremy G. B-C' via Azores Genealogy
There is a Medeiros family (I believe from this Freguisia) that ended up in San
Louis Obispo County CA. They married into my line, and I have a cousin who
provided me alot of old stuff on them (like tintypes from Sao Miguel, passports
from the late 1800s, a journal of memoirs) but they are irrelevant to me. I
have to see if I can find the first names as I don't remember.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Bernardo Cardoso - Flamengos on Faial

2017-03-20 Thread 'Jeremy G. B-C' via Azores Genealogy
Is anyone familiar with Bernardo Cardoso and his family from Flamengos on
FAIAL? I think that one of his children was my ancestor but am having a hard
time verifying that. Bernardo was having children in the very early 1700s.

Thanks!

Also I would be interested if anyone has any knowledge of Any Cardoso lines
that went from Flamengos FAIAL to Calheta Council of Sao Jorge in the early-mid
part of the 1700s.

I appreciate any information!

You know, I just had a great idea. Why don't we (the group) do this?!
Members interested could each do a specific section (like 1 freguesia
each)? I would be willing to help with either Norte Pequeno or Calheta or
both. Ribeira Seca would require multiple people. Who is interested? Over
the coarse of a year we could do it!
