when I pull out the ethernet cable I don't want to have to go in to my list of networks and find mine and click the connect button. You have a wireless network in your location. You are choosing to connect wired with an ethernet cable to that same network. You then want to disconnect the wire and just stay right where you are and no hiccups but just continue working. Unless somebody knows a way to make this happen, I don't think you can do this. First, why would you connect by ethernet if you have a wireless connection set up? Second, when connected by ethernet, that is not a wireless connection. So, the wireless card turns off instead of constantly trying to connect and lets your ethernet connection handle the traffic. The computer assumes you want to connect by ethernet. Third, when you disconnect the ethernet, you will have to tell the wireless card that you are again ready to use it. The solution? Use wireless all the time and put away your cable. Or, just know that when you switch connection types, you will have to tell the wireless system you want it to now work for this computer. Does the wireless automatically connect if you turn the computer off and then later turn it back on in your own house or space? It should do that. The computer in question connected to the internet via a belkin Y Fi catcher. Yesterday I tried plugging in a U Verse modem. Back then tech support had me go in to device manager and make sure that the Modem and computer were comunicating. They had me check a radio button. How ever I don't remember witch one it was. It could have been in networking or some thing like that. That's what I am trying to figure out. -- From: Rick Justice ricjust...@jaws-users.com Sent: Thursday, February 23, 2012 5:47 PM To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] Making Sure the computer and modem arecomunicating Hi Michael, First, if you are having some connectivity issues, make sure that all cables are plugged in properly. You didn't give a specific problem, so here are some general steps. There are 2 things you can do here. 1. Go to the Control Panel, and then System, and then move to the Hardware tab. Next, tab once, and then spacebar on the Device Manager button and then tab once more to focus on the tree-view. Now, press the letter N, to move to Network Adapters. Press right arrow to open, and then arrow to the network adapter your system is using, and press enter. Route Jaws to PC, and then press the page up key, and then start reading down until you come to the status of the adapter. If it says that the device is working properly, then proceed to step 2. If it is not working properly, then return to the PC cursor, and tab to the Troubleshoot button, press spacebar on it, and follow the prompts to troubleshoot the device. 2. If everything above is good, then alt F4 out of everything. Next, open the Run Dialogue, and type the following: cmd This will open the command prompt. If you don't know the IP Address of your modem, type the following in the command prompt, and hit enter: ipconfig Now, route Jaws to PC, and press page up and then start reading down until you find your IP Address The one you are looking for will be the Default Gateway, which should look something like this: 192.168.1.1 Once you have located this, write it down for future reference, because you cannot copy it into the command prompt. Next, type the following in the command prompt: ping followed by a space, and your address. It should look something like this: ping 192.168.1.1 Once you have typed this in, hit enter. Using the procedure above read the information with the Jaws cursor. This should show you the amounts of packets sent and received If everything is working properly, then the 2 numbers should match. To close the Command Prompt, simply type: exit and hit enter. It seems like a good computer to me. I'm partial to HP myself. It sounds pretty much like the laptop I intended to buy as my backup computer in March or April. I was involved in a project and didn't want to take my HP 8130 DV7 which is my Laptop but also my primary computer back and forth between home and away. So I boght an ACER with pretty much those specifications to be my away computer. Then the project fell apart and I let the ACER sit around having never used it. I should also mention that I had emergency surgery and lost most of my remaining eye sight and never installed JAWS or Magic on it so never got a look at it either. However about ten days ago my HP which is a premium computer and my baby lost it's hard drive I remembered the ACER and got it out and installed my JAWS and MAGIC on it. I had ordered it on Amazon. Imagine my surprise when I realized they sent me the wrong computer all those months ago. It has a bigger hard drive, faster processor, and super duper wammer jammer DVD writer. The only thing wrong with it is crappy sound. It even has HEART DISEASE cinematic video and a Radeon 1 gig video card which I didn't order. But the sound is very crappy. I'm about 8 months too late to complain and they got the short end of the stick anyway because I didn't pay for all the bells whistles I got. However, I might need to get a USB sound card or something. It's 100% volvume is equal to my HP 40% volume. [Blind-Computing] AVI conversions
I have a number of television shows which are all in AVI format. This plays well on my computer, and with amazing quality (depending on the original source, of course). I have recently been trying to prepare DVD disks which will play on stand-alone DVD players. I have Nero which contains a utility that will burn disks that will play on the players. They use a different format than we use on the computer. I was able to take four episodes from a television series, create a great background, with the little picture icons that you click to start the episode playing, and with titles and the whole bit. Looked fantastic! It then took an hour of processing to convert into the player format for these four episodes. These four were 4.37 Gb and should fit on a DVD disk. But when it came to the step to burn, it failed. No other message other than failed. So I am not sure where the fault is. I've tried this about three times, with the same result. I have not tried with only two episodes to see if that makes a difference, but it shows that these four will fit on a disk. I never did get these episodes on these special player disks -- I am able to burn them to disk in the regular .AVI format for storage. I really would like to get them in a useable form that can be played on stand-alone DVD players and viewed on a TV set. Any ideas? Would that make it pick up the sound? I've been wanting to do this myself but don't feel like buying an expensive USB turn table for the purpose. I know that I have a cord somewhere that has 3 plugs on one end which are all color coded and then the other end has one connector. I remember using it to get my stereo speakers to be the output for my DVD player. I don't know if this makes sense because I'm not really sure how to explain it, but I'd appreciate any help you can give me. On 5/11/11, David Ferrin ow...@jaws-users.com wrote: The cord you will need is easily found at your local radio shack or any store of that nature. One end will plug in to your sound card and the other will have 2 connectors that will go in to the back of your cassette player. Then you will need a program like gold wave. Then the fun begins because then you will need to learn the tricks of the trade. Yes it is possible to do what you want because I have done it in the past myself. It is not a beginner level project but with some training and a bit of time to practice you could do it as well. The cord is around $5 or maybe a couple bucks more but not much. Gold wave is around $50 at this time if memory serves me. Think about it and let us know how it is going and where you come down on this project. It is possible like I said but it will take some time to figure out the program. Most external hard drives have built in software which comes up immediately when you access the drive. It could be something as simple as a list of options or a password portal where you have to enter a certain string of characters to be allowed into the inner sanctum so to speak. You can select a simple program like Notepad or Wordpad and allow the program to make that kind of association. The worst that could happen would be that the displayed data couldn't be read. I believe, although I can't think how right now, that you can go into the Applications menu and reassociate certain files to be read by another program. I had to do that with some programs that were coming up in Microsoft Word Viewer instead of in Word itself. Re: [Blind-Computing] external Mp3 player question
sure will thanks - Original Message - From: Scorpio Forever scorpio...@gmail.com To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Sent: Thursday, March 25, 2010 6:19 AM Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] external Mp3 player question So it sounds like it's a standard generic MP3 player, so it should plug in just fine, and, from your last message, your computer is detecting it, so there should no be issues. One suggestion I would make is to go into your device manager after hitting alt+enter on your My Computer icon on your desktop, and control+tabbing over to the hardware tab, then tabbing over to the device manager button. Within the device manager, arrow through your computer's components until you see the list of USB devices, and delete them all. Just arrow through each one of them, and press your delete key and remove each and everyone of them. Once you've accomplished this task, reboot your computer, and let Windows self-detect the USB ports and install the drivers for them. Once this is done, use the Windows Update feature, and update your Windows, just to make sure that the version of the drivers for your USb devices that your computer is using is up to date. Once you've discovered that it is up to date, plug your MP3 player back into your computer. When the dialog box pops up asking you what you want to do, indicate that you want it to do nothing, and make sure the checkbox to do this task every time you plug in this device to the computer is checked, and tab to the ok button. Once done, have a look and see if the MP3 player is there. Now, these instructions are for Windows XP machines, so if you're running anything other than a XP machine, such as Vista or Windows 7, then I'm afraid you'll have to Google your particular problem and operating system, as I'm sure there will be no shortage of steps for you to take in doing this. Let us know how it went for you. (1) Some players need to turned on before the computer can recognize them. (2) You are not making a good connection either with the unit or the computer. Try another USB port or even another cable. (3) Your unit could be defective. (4) The auto run is not being fired but the dirve is there and accessible. In that case browse for it in windows explorer under your computer. What is the mp3 player and where did you get it? It is a clearday kitty higgins rapcity. Hope this helps - Original Message - From: Scorpio Forever scorpio...@gmail.com To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Sent: Wednesday, March 24, 2010 6:42 PM Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] external Mp3 player question Hi Michael, You should start by letting us know what model of MP3 player you have. Reason is that some players, such as iPods and other products from Apple require iTunes in order to view the content on them, or transfer tracks to them. On the odd occasion that you will see them in your My Computer window, you will have limited access to it, unless you remove some restrictions on them. I don't know how to do that, but I hear it's a must if you want to access other features on your player. Another reason to find out what sort of model it is might because something got corrupted, and/or you may have a defective player, and so it might need restoring. Some companies carry MP3 player restoration programs on their sites that will allow you to re-format and restore their players to factory defaults, and/or re-format them the way the factory does. One such company I know that does this is Creative Labs. They have an MP3 Restore Tool that you can download and install for free, and it restores the firmware on the MP3 player in case it gets corrupted or some such thing like that, so you may want to look into that.
