[Blind-Computing] AVG PC TuneUp, JAWS Scripts Help Please! Using Win7 JAWS12
Could someone help me locate where to find and download scripts for AVG PC TuneUp? My husband bought a 2 year subscription and it is difficult for JAWS to navigate through all of it easily. I have done many searches on the internet but, I can not seem to find the actual scripts, only references to them being out there somewhere. I’m very frustrated and need to set some of the settings but, I do not seem to be able to navigate well enough without scripts to do so. I’d really appreciate the help. I have never installed scripts before but, I found instructions on how to do it and it does not sound difficult. If this is not the place to ask for such help, can you tell me where the proper place is to do so? I am running Windows7 with all of the latest updates I am also using JAWS 12 with all updates to that version. I am running AVG Internet Security 2013 Free Edition and AVG PC TuneUp, latest edition. If you need more information about my computer, please let me know. Again, thanks in advance for your help. [Blind-Computing] AVG and Jaws
Hi all I fell victim to a horrible worm, something which sounded like MS Anti Virus Platinum. My computer was out for days and it took an engineer to remove it and clean up the computer. He recommended AVG as my program. I had been using MS security suit, but it got by that. Is AVG good and Accessible? Re: [Blind-Computing] AVG and Jaws
Hi Niamh, Firstly, sorry about my previous empty message. Human error. (Smile). In all likelihood, while using Internet Explorer or other browser, you probably clicked or pressed enter on a warning message telling you that certain worms or viruses had been discovered on your computer and that you should click on a Scan or Clean link to get rid of them. In fact, when you clicked on the scan link promising to clean your computer, this was actually a virus you were installing. I'm sure your computer probably went crazy after that with crazy popups and weird sounds, and when you tried running your antivirus such as MSE you could not do so. there are many, many variants of this malware on the internet. The reason you got infected was not because Microsoft Security Essentials failed you (there is no major commercial antivirus that can protect the user from mistakes in judgment when it comes to this kind of prompt). AVG will not be able to help you if you come across the same type of prompt, and Nod32 will also not be able to protect you. The computer user also bares some responsibility for the security of their computer. You should seriously consider taking a multi-layer approach to protection. You should use a properly configured MSE, and use Malwarebytes Pro for full real time protection (do not use the free malwarebytes as it can't protect you in real time and will probably not be completely effective in ridding your computer of malware after the fact). Very glad to hear you are back on your feet as I was a bit upset when this happened to me also. Luckily, I had an image of my computer from just a few days prior, which I was able to use to restore my computer to a working state within an hour. Hiya someone once told me, the best way to get out of those traps is just to shutdown the computer. do nothing in otherwords as the worm or trojan will install if you close the window, with alt F4, do not install in otherwords. either way it will install. so I have my computers button shutting down the PC just in case of such situations. [Blind-Computing] AVG 2012 Free Version very slow
Dear Friends, I have these past 4 or 5 years used the AVG Paid version very successfully, it is very JAWS friendly, and I got used to it and liked it. However, not being able to find a Paid version On Sale at any of the local Office supply stores, like Office Max, Office Depot, Staples, and not wanting to spend the full cost for the AVG 2012($64) , I downloaded the Free version. I find that this version is pretty slow, that is it takes almost 3 times the time to scan a folder, or my system's drive than the Paid version used to. Is any one else having this same situation of AVG 2012 Free Version being very slow? Thanks for any responses. With Best Regards, Alan Miami, Florida Join a Free Voice Chat Site Community on the Web! Hi Alvin, How did you determine the amount of space on the hard drive Microsoft Security Essentials occupies? Rick Justice - Original Message - From: acart...@juno.com To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Sent: Tuesday, July 12, 2011 11:49 PM Subject: [Blind-Computing] AVG removal and MSE installation Hi list It's Alvin. My AVG license is about to expire next month, and I want to make sure that I uninstall everything associated with it. What's the best way to do this? I am thinking about using Microsoft Security Essentials instead. I already use it on my dad's desktop, and I want to put it on my HP laptop. However, I have noticed on my dad's desktop that it seems to take up quite a bit of the hard drive. At one point, the computer had around 22 gigs free, but after a while, it has about 2 gigs of hard drive. Is this normal? This would be my only hang up with using MSE. It seems to be a hard drive hog. :) Is there something I can do to minimize this from happening? I haven't installed anything on the desktop that takes up that much space. At least I don't believe so. Maybe Windows update is doing it without me knowing. It often installs things (according to my dad) when I shut down the computer. The desktop is using Windows XP Pro SP2 with about 1 Gig of ram and around 40 Gigs on the hard drive. It's an old computer. Lol My HP Pavilion notebook has about 2 Gigs of Ram and around 80 Gigs on the hard drive and is using Windows XP Home SP3. It is pretty old too. Lol I have had it since the spring of 2005. It shows signs of wear and tare from time to time, but it still gets done what I need it to do. I am looking into purchasing another computer anyway. [Blind-Computing] AVG 9
I think finally that pest pop up called web browser in AVG 9 has finally gone. I am almost afraid to mention it, for fear it will return, lol. I'm not sure if it was the 8 window's updates that did the trick, or enabling some of the IE/6 add-on in tools/options, or maybe it might have been that I added certain web sites and one application, Open Book to exclude in it's scanning/tracking that caused this to stop popping up. But for a whole week now, I've not been bothered with it. I do have a few items in the AVG components list disabled, but don't really think that had much to do with this, as before, when they were disabled, the dern pop up still reared it's ugly head. I know it had nothing to do with Jaws 11 since I have only jaws 10 on my computer. Patricia For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

Same here Patricia! There is nothing I did on my end to make it go away. The only thing I had changed right before it stopped was changing some of my ResearchIt options. Re: [Blind-Computing] AVG 9
Hmmm, that makes me to wonder if AVG had some kind of glitch and maybe through it's updates, it worked it away. Did you put any web sites by any chance in the exclusion lists? I had to put All in Play in mine, that web browser popped up in that program like crazy.. It also for some reason thought Open Book was a problem, it would try to block me from using the program. It wasn't a firewall issue on either of these, that popped up a screen which I allowed it to go through and made it a permanent rule. Re: [Blind-Computing] AVG 9
Many former AVG users like myself have switched to MSE rather than deal with AVG's annoying glitches. So there are fewer AVG users on this list to share experiences with. Besides, according to recent comparison tests, AVG is no better at virus detection than MSE. If you really need the extra features that the paid version of AVG offers, then by all means stick with it. But for the rest of us, who just need basic real-time protection, MSE is a better alternative. Unless the problem is found to be unsolvable by us, the users, and unfixable by the developers. What I'm hoping to do is learn how to fix it by doing just what we are doing here, comparing experiences. So far, I haven't heard from anyone besides Patricia (and one other person on this list whose name is not coming to me right now) that they are experiencing a similar problem. Re: [Blind-Computing] AVG 9
Robin, Please tell me how that web browser is not popping up on your computer? I am wondering if it has anything to do with what operating system is running. I am still on xp pro or the window's media 2005 which according to FS it's considered to be xp pro. Even though AVG said v/9 works still with xp I can't seem to get rid of this thing. [Blind-Computing] AVG 9 Web Shield
I found this info on the AVG web site and thought to share it with anyone using AVG 9 and has encountered this annoying web pop up box and how to disable it. AVG Web Shield is a type of a real-time resident protection. It consists of two features - Web protection and Instant Messaging protection. Web protection scans the downloaded files even before these are downloaded to your computer. This is done by scanning communication on ports TCP 80, 3128 and 8080 by default. Instant Messaging protection verifies the files sending via instant messaging are virus free. Currently AVG supports the ICQ, MSN and Yahoo! protocols. How can I change settings of Web Shield component or disable it? You can change settings of Web Shield component following way: a.. Please open AVG User Interface. b.. Double-click on the Web Shield component. 1. Web protection Following settings may be changed on the Web tab: a.. Check archives - Does Web Shield check the archive files (e.g. ZIP)? b.. Report Potentially Unwanted Programs and Spyware threats - Does Web Shield detect the Potentially Unwanted Programs and Spyware infection? c.. Use heuristic analysis - Does Web Shield use the heuristic analysis? d.. What is the maximal size of the file that will be checked by Web Shield? 2. Instant Messaging protection You can select what Instant Messaging application, that are supported, will be protected by Web Shield component: a.. ICQ b.. MSN c.. Yahoo In case you want to disable Web Shield component, please proceed as follows: a.. Open AVG User Interface. b.. Double-click on the Web Shield component. c.. Un-tick the Enable Web Shield option. d.. To confirm the settings please click on the Save changes button. I will try these steps to see if this removes this pop-up of this Web dialogue box, if it doesn't, then I will email tech support. Also here is a direct link that I found rather interesting read of index help within AVG and very easily navigated with my jaws version 10. http://www.avg.com/us-en/faq Patricia For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

Win Frotz is an emulator, right? If this is a program that is trustworthy then the scanner sometimes can go off with this alert, because malware is sometimes compiled and packed in the same manner as was used with this program. Considering the fact that this is a free emulator it may be a false positive. best to just go ahead and use an online scanner to recheck the file in question. kaspersky.has a good online scan for single files. so you may want to run your file thru their scanner. her is the link: http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus regards chrissy - Original Message - From: acart...@juno.com To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Sent: Sunday, July 26, 2009 12:46 PM Subject: [Blind-Computing] AVG threat detection inquiry Hi list, It's AC. I use Avast and it is totally accessible. You just need to configure it correctly which only takes about 5 minutes. I have a tutorial and the configuration if you want them. AVG and Avast are both free and totally accessible with JAWS. Nod32, which costs $39.99/year , is also very JAWS friendly. [Blind-Computing] AVG 8.5 Scanning Time
I have a new computer that came with AVG. Prior to AVG 8.5, I was using a free version of Avast. AVG scans the whole computer in about 19 minutes, whereas, Avast took about 48 minutes to do a complete scan. Is this time difference appropriate, and does AVG handle virus, spyware, adware, etc.? Re: [Blind-Computing] AVG with the new JAWS update
I just upgraded my JAWS to 10.0.1142, so maybe they fixed some of those bugs in the very latest upgrade? You could try upgrading again and see if it fixes the problems. I'm running AVG 8.5 and it works for me just the same as it did with my previous version of JAWS 10. Hi, I guess if you want to downgrade, uninstall the 8.5 version and reinstall the free version. I'm not sure if it is free anymore but at least it is usable and I imagine you can purchase the older version. Re: [Blind-Computing] AVG Anti-Virus Accessibillity
Absolutely, especially the internet security suites. That's not to say the free edition isn't accessible; however, the free edition does display a banner which gains focus when you first open AVG, so you'll need to alt tab from and to the AVG user interface before you can use it. -- Chris Hallsworth e-mail: christopher...@googlemail.com MSN: ch9...@hotmail.com Skype: chrishallsworth7266 - Original Message - From: Bill Gallik billgal...@centurytel.net To: Blind Computing blind-computing@jaws-users.com Sent: Thursday, March 05, 2009 8:29 AM Subject: [Blind-Computing] AVG Anti-Virus Accessibillity I'm sure this subject has been covered in earlier threads on this list, but I'm at a point where I may need to finally buy a new PC and the vendor prefers to install AVG as the anti-virus of choice. Re: [Blind-Computing] AVG 8
I am getting a little disillusioned with AVG and its Firewall. I rung their technical support a few months ago and they told me I had to upgrade to version 8 before they could address a Malware infection on my PC. In the event they could not help anyway and I had to restore my PC from a Ghost image to resolve the problem. Nevertheless I upgraded to version 8 to try and prevent future problems. The problem is that in version 8 accessibility with Jaws has plummeted. Seeing the issues today about what settings the Firewall should b on I rang AVG technical support . Like others I had chosen the allow all setting as opposed to block all or stand alone PC. AVG tech support said that actually none of these options suited a PC user with a home network linking to a laptop for example. It seems that because of the hidden nature of the appropriate settings I have been incorrectly keeping the setting on allow all and receiving minimal protection. No wonder I have been having to resort to Super Anti-Spyware! They recommended that the Firewall configuration wizard be run completely from scratch and apparently from this wizard there is an option to select Computer and Domain as an option, this option does not appear in the main settings of AVG 8 . Apparently you can then nominate a name for your home network which does not have to correlate to your actual home network name. This option will apparently allow you to have firewall protection and use a home network. The other advice was not to try and modify existing settings as this apparently causes problems. Start with a completely new configuration wizard.. The problem is that I have spent the last 30 minutes trying to locate the Configuration Wizard for the Firewall within a very flaky User interface. I have been using the Jaws cursor and the PC Cursor. At the moment I am able to locate a Firewall button using the Jaws cursor but no amount of real or virtual mouse clicking will activate this button. Space or enter will not work on this button either. You can enter Firewall settings through the menu but again I cannot find a button to start the configuration wizard. I'll try restarting the PC in a minute to see if that accessibility can be improved. Given that home networks are pretty common these days I am quite annoyed that the default installation of AVG appears to lead you into a risky Firewall setup. If anybody else can set up computer and domain as the profile within the AVG 8 firewall I would be very glad to hear how they did it. Re: [Blind-Computing] AVG 8
OK - I finally got there and I did not have to ring AVG technical support. In summary What I did was 1. run Jaws 10 in demo mode. Oddly this has now had the effect of making Jaws 8 work better with AVG and I no longer have to use Jaws 10 in demo mode. What I found was that you should just use the cursor keys to navigate the window and avoid using the tab key. On my setup using the tab key tended to make Jaws lose focus. 2. Run the configuration wizard and select computer and domain as the Firewall profile type. 3. Restart your PC. 4. This was the confusing bit . Go back to AVG Firewall settings after restart . What I found was that although I had run the configuration wizard this had not actually changed any settings at all and I was still stuck on stand alone PC. What had happened however, was that computer and domain had been added as a setting to select via a check box. 5. Check this computer and domain setting and execute the save settings button. Finally my home network reappeared on my Laptop and hopefully for the first time ever I am getting proper Firewall protection. Oh yes, Avast is excellent. I love it. It, in conjunction with Comodo firewall, Spybot SD and Spyware Blaster. WinPatrol is a good add-on as well. well it popped up again soon as I turned on my computer. I did leave the stand alone computer as is, but that wasn't listed.. I did have to select it or I think in the set up process it already was. Hi. 1. set up the avg 8.0 free, and it is not displaying the text checked by avg free. 2. went into advanced options under tools, clicked on the incoming message certification, checked and selected my language as english, for incoming and outgoing and says the text of the message in text boxes, clicked apply, then okay. 3. and in my messages, not displaying the text checked by avg free 8.0. 4. what could be the source of this problem? really annoying me. 5. would like to have this if possible. 6. those with some sight, or have had some experience in setting up avg free 8.0, the only way maybe to get round this and help me, is maybe to do a jaws tandem? that might be the way to go. so if any one is interested, let me know asap. this is really annoying me. or should i not really worry about this one? want to be safe, and secure on the net. cheers Marvin. If I get anywhere with this, or if you do, let's get it posted for anyone else that may be having the same problem. Re: [Blind-Computing] AVG
I had an issue with AVG in the system's tray it said...my email scanner was half functioning. The help files to fix this was very clear and easy to correct. I had to choose the default settings for AVG's configuration for Outlook Express and then had to check the box to disabled email scanner personal plug ins as the help files suggested to do. Then reboot. Now all is set correctly and I think it's working better than it has all along, lol - Original Message - From: Steve Shannon [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Sent: Wednesday, November 19, 2008 5:30 PM Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] AVG Hi Ken, If I find the solution, I will be sure to post it to the group.
