Those ones don't upgrade. If you played as a ranger you would find they didn't
upgrade for yourself either. I tend to use assassins arrow, then stagger when

I have never finnished the game myself.

But from those that have.

1.  you can restart the game with another class, and continue to level
up from where you left off.

Aparently, the southern gateway becomes accessible however having never
beaten the game I havn't tried to go there.

The way I see it, some people attacked him, and he arked up and
started lashing out at some who quite frankly, did not deserve to be
lashed out at. He got his nose out of joint with me because I kept
finding crash bugs with monkey business, one after another after
another. I committed the oh so cardinal sin of suggesting he should
have kept the product in beta for longer and that I should have been
on his beta list because then I could have found out about the crash
problems and caught them before he released it as a paid product.
I also think that Dave Sherman (anyone remember him?) was not being
helpful by posting snarky smart aleky replies whenever I posted a
question or asked someone for help on the list, and somehow, James
got it into his judgmental head that I was one of the people
responsible for everything going wrong in his life, and Sherman's
beligerence did not help things. and then other people who will
remain nameless joined the fray and I was basically hounded off the list.

All in all it was not a pleasant experience!

Re: James North - Re: [blind-gamers] A Hero's Call question

2017-12-30 Thread Shaun Everiss
No one knows about the start of the history from 1995-2005 that well its
only recently that we have started to record community history on
forums, archives, audyssey.org, etc and even then the mag has stopped.

If I remember rightly, we had a few servers with stuff, one softcon
server now lost and maybe something else.

We never kept records of it all, and in fact bar the snippits we got at
the time it was never that clear in the first place.

If it happened in 2007 or 2008 when bavisoft went we may have had
another source with audiogames.net, they actually will do their best
being the main database to find a dev if one is lost if you don't anger
those guys and they do have to put up with a lot usually.

From the outside, james stopped for unknown reason.

No one got anything no mail no games, nothing.

We found out second hand about the attacks, the issues in a small part
though it was never a full story, well maybe we didn't need all of it
but it wasn't a satisfactory answer, even at the end james never
publically appeared to explain himself, if he did we wouldn't have had
any issue at all.

reason for these people to send him the eMails that they sent not only
to this list, but to James personally.  He was not thin skinned.  He
took an awful lot of totally unnecessary abuse, a lot of it personal
rather than about his business, from childish and impatient whiners
who did not realize that problems do come up during beta testing, and
that he would not distribute a buggy product.  He announced an
expected, not set in concrete, date of release, and then sent updates
if that date was not going to be met.  In his updates, he gave the
reason for the pushing back date of the game.  I saw some of these
eMails, and would have thrown these adult children into a playpen to
fight among themselves over a pacifier if I could have.  They went
beyond nasty by far.

I don't know anything about this James person you guys are on about,

Re: James North - Re: [blind-gamers] A Hero's Call question

2017-12-30 Thread Shaun Everiss
Thats the problem you are right, up till the change he had regularly
been releasing updates.

In the last batch, something happened to get him off, he simply shut his
mouth and this was before the external attacks started, the only guy he
would talk to was phill and thats why we even tried to hold out for so long.

From phill the issue was serious enough to set him back which was why
no one immediately rallied about.

However when it became clear that nothing was coming, understandably
people started to wander.

The fact we had to write it off as experience is probably why there are
a lot more moaners and whiners now.

True some just complete nutters but trust over all for developers was
really hurt that day.

And its never recovered, now not only does your average dev need to have
a good game that keeps on giving, it needs to be near perfect, it needs
to work reliably and it needs to be out on time with open communications.

Bavisoft was another such company to the point where people started
pirating their games.

Eventually it got to the audiogames mods who really did their upmost to
contact bavisoft on status but got no responce.

Eventually the site closed down and was clasified by ican as a spam
site, it either got hacked or just went cold.

Its why we can crack bavisoft's stuff all we want.

Until they come forward, this time round audiogames.net existed and we
actually did try our best.

Bar that and code factory which we had to write off basically no one has
ever done this to the playerbase of that magnitude on that scale and I
hope they never do so again.

It was one of the signifficant turns in our history, and created the
unspoken rule that a release must be out on release date or have a good
reason to not be and devs should communicate, its not always the case
but its never been as bad.

Because of this though no one does preorders anymore till they are sure.

It did damage the community sadly but who knows.

Sure there were probably some whiners but probably far less than there

Between those times he never told us what was going on or what was
really going on.

Maybe someones or a group of them became totally bad and assholish at
him, but to the outsider player that was hanging on he suddenly decided
to flip for no reason, burn out and rage quit the scene.

Maybe something was going on, maybe people were nasty at him, but it had
to be more than that, no news, nothing for ages.

True a lot of devs do this but to be honest, from then on no one
releases stuff unless they are sure it will be out on that day.

Users especially those that preorder games want their games.

Thomas ward tried, he died!, no one will ever get their games now.

I don't know if I would really want to be james north and come back.

There are people that would really like to flame him out for those games
we have never even gotten.

He owes the community big.

He never informed us, I guess if he is more open and lets us know what
is going on, then maybe.

He lost all the trust though, I my self was never nasty with him, I
asked him once about stuff and he just flipped.

We are better without him now.

If he comes back, maybe we will be nice, maybe not.

There are at least 4-5 unreleased games and some of them have been
ordered by several players, with no refunds or anything.

Thats how I understand

Re: James North - Re: [blind-gamers] A Hero's Call question

2017-12-30 Thread Shaun Everiss

James wasn't that bad, up to 2005 or so he ran old espsoftworks.

It was a nice game, company mostly with tabletop games, monkey business,
pinball  classic, and dynaman were origionally his as well as shellshock
and a few others.

Then he decided to branch out and make his own style of gaming someone
adventurous.

He had several games planned max shrapnal, montisumers, raceway, and
genisus project  some which had trailers etc.

But it never happened, life as it is caught up with him and chucked him
a nice golf ball in the nuts and he couldn't do much for a bit.

Unfortunately so confident was he that he started a preorder for a lot
of his games that were coming out.

People had payed for these games, and the release dates came up and nothing.

We had had games delayed for weeks and months so at first no one
actually bothered about it.

In fact no one bothered about it for a while except to ask randomly
about it on forum.

A year went past and people were optimistic.

Then another year went buy, people were concerned.

Where is this mr north.

Finally at the 3 year mark someone wrote to him and got no responce.

After that someone asked one of the mods of one of the lists, not sure
if audiogames.net was about yet but no one got a responce.

4 years after, people started bailing out of the entire thing.

At the end of 5 years, everyone had had enough.

In the middle there was a lot of pushing and shoving I remember staying
out of it for the most part but since I had never ordered anything, it
wasn't my issue.

At some point phill of pcs was able to get a message through and tell us
he was having issues and would come back when he could.

I do remember the community actually calmed down for a little but with
no official responce, they started up again.

Finally I decided to simply ask him what was going on explaining that no
one had heard him for a while.

He simply told me to go fork myself and blocked me basically flipped.

What a retard I thought.

It was only later we found out a few people had decided to wage their
own private war with him over email, they had kept it mostly off our
radar, people these days put the war in the open but at this current
time they didn't.

Neither did he come out about this, we would I am sure have done
something about those that were attacking him.

Then again rumor was that it didn't come from inside our current
community which was smaller than it is now.

Thats the entire history about it.

No one knows what went on, why james stopped notifying us,  or how he
could have forgotten those that he got cash from.

My theory has always been that something happened so dire that he simply
couldn't come back.

The rumor mill is that he was a total ass hole that wanted to take our
cash and run but I don't believe that, still don't.

The fact he was attacked was probably due to the stuff not being
released from those that had payed for the stuff, the rest is unknown.

It could have been a bug and life, life, a bug, or anything.

No one knows what happened origionally, we did in the end bann a few
trouble makers about 3 from insid e the community, but most of it was
outside.

Those in his inner circle said he was hounded by people, ofcause they
were ours.

Some of them were banned to.

In the end it was left a mystory.

If james comes back, and well follows things and is sure of himself this
time then we can give him another chance.

The first thing he is going to have to do is pay those back their cash
for all the games he promissed.

Rumors were that some of that was done I can not confirm it.

I agree as well.

however in this case the guy took money, for something that never came.

I am not talking about breakerboxgames where while its a bit hit and
miss its eventually happened, I mean never and some of these were preorders.

It was such a disaster it changed how the industry as a whole did things.

Eventually it would emerge that james life got in the way as life always
does.

However no user got an official word from james at all, there were a lot
of broken promises and unfinnished projects, I for one was wanting to
get the genisus project, if james came back and tried again, heck I'd
try again.

In reality, people had spent cash on this, they got no return and now
won't for ever more.

Shame to those that bashed him, I agree with that and yes a couple did
spoil it but they didn't drive him away, they and a few others may have
pushed him all the way, but they didn't start the ball roling.

The community was more patient than it is now.

This disaster in fact is why a lot of us are bitchy whiner gits.

Trust in a dev is that they release things when they do and that its
reasonably stable.

Stuff up, and well point is, our community was shaken, I know the new
ones there are a lot of brats round but for those that existed in the
good old days before the game engine, the small groups and the whiny
brats that don't know anything, will know that.

We are after all talking betwene 96 and 2000 and 2000-2007, they were
early days of the net.

It's like I said earlier.
There is no reason for anyone to be nasty with a developer.
One of the things that was said to me by a great late developer of
accessible games was this.

People will keep on and there won't be anymore games for the blind.

Personally, if one developer burned me, I would not hold it against others.

Also, and this is not in reply to any one poster but to everyone, I don't
feel that people who weren't around when all of this happened should comment
without firsthand knowledge of what went on during the flying of the fur.

Hi,

I wasn't actually around when this thing with James North happened, and
though I don't think there is ever any reason for anyone to be nasty to
someone else as there is always a constructive way to go around things, . I
do think however, that if a developer has taken pre-payment for something
they are making a commitment to deliver a product, I do however also
understand that stuff happens and release dates can get pushed forward, but
from Sean's email it sounds like the release date was 5 years overdue, and I
think that is unacceptable especially if that developer has taken payment
from people in advance as that is a commitment from the developer between
two people to deliver a service or product. Even worse than this it sounds
like the guy wasn't even keeping people updated on progress and was just
plain ignoring his paying customers , who just wanted the product they paid
for. Again I don't condone people being nasty to Dev's, but I think if a
game that has been pre-paid for is 5 years overdue with no updates on
progress then I'm afraid as a developer you need to understand that you
will most definitely end up with very angry customers. I completely agree
with Justins point too, in that if the guy has gone off to program for the
sighted community that they would be a lot less forgiving than people from
the audio games community as on the whole the biggest proportion of people
from the audio games community would actually put up with a 5 year delay on
a game and still support the guy too, as we're here for good audio game
titles, whereas I'm sure there would be an uproar in the sighted community
if a developer took money for a game and was 5 years late on delivering
that game and with no updates . even more so that the developer decided to
then give up on the project, not release the game but still keep everyone's
money, since I'm pretty sure that’s illegal, and is also detrimental to
other audio game developers since it creates distrust between the end users
and the developers.

Reality check for Justin: Seeing as you know nothing about what went on
between James North and a lot of blind gamers, you should say nothing.
While it is true that, as the saying goes, "If you can't stand the heat, get
out of the kitchen", there was also absolutely no reason for these people to
send him the eMails that they sent not only to this list, but to James
personally. He was not thin skinned. He took an awful lot of totally
unnecessary abuse, a lot of it personal rather than about his business, from
childish and impatient whiners who did not realize that problems do come up
during beta testing, and that he would not distribute a buggy product. He
announced an expected, not set in concrete, date of release, and then sent
updates if that date was not going to be met. In his updates, he gave the
reason for the pushing back date of the game. I saw some of these eMails,
and would have thrown these adult children into a playpen to fight among
themselves over a pacifier if I could have. They went beyond nasty by far.

Okay, reality check: if a developer cannot handle the heat, he
shouldn't be a developer, or, at the very least, have someone else
handle his public relations.

I don't know anything about this James person you guys are on about,
but based on what I have heard, he sounded like a thin-skinned
narsicist that needed to get over himself. What, did he actually think
that the main stream gaming public would treat him better? Hate to
break the news, but main stream gamers are just as, if not more so,
toxic; just as demanding; just as unforgiving. If you want to develop
games, you had better be prepared to handle that reality and not cry
about it when the Internet takes a swing at you.

2017-12-30 Thread Charles Rivard
Actually, as I remember it, James North did keep us updated when delays
cropped up. Most of the delays dealt with bugs in the games, and I thought
that the delays were justified. As for the last batch of games after the
company name change, I think that we should have gotten lur money back when
he closed up shop out of anger. We had been waiting for 3 or 4 years.
Thomas Ward took the games over from Josh de Lioncourt if I remember
correctly. I haven't heard from Josh in quite some time, and Thomas is,
unfortunately, not with us lowly Earthlings anymore.

I think the problem is most people expect the games to be released like in the
cited world. Where you hit midnight and the game is ready to go. This isn’t the
right outlook to have, however I feel like that is what most expect. I think
most people think when you give a date that means everything is good to go and
will be released promptly at midnight. No one has patients.

We have lost so many developers do to this reason.
It is cool to give ideas or suggestions, but not to be nasty with them.

James North - Re: [blind-gamers] A Hero's Call question

2017-12-30 Thread Charles Rivard
He made it very clear that he would not be producing games for impatient and
nasty customers anymore. If you have contact info for him, contact him to see
if he would give it another try. In short, though, lotsa luck. Some, but not
all, blind and visually impaired gamers were far too hostile.

Re: [blind-gamers] A Hero's Call question

2017-12-29 Thread Michael
I couldn’t agree more, that I wish James North was never driven away from the
blind gamer community. Though that sounds harsh, sadly that’s pretty much what
happened. ☹
I’ve paid my bit for a hero’s call, and I’m waiting for a link now. I’m puzzled
why this release was chozen to happen right in the middle of a holiday week
like this. Lol

Charles i agree with you here, we have pinball and others that James did that
can be played and never loose their interest value.

I would not gripe, if at all, until the day after an expected release.
However, I won’t complain about this one even tomorrow, as we are in a busy
Holiday season, and even developers have home lives.  How many good developers
of good games have we lost due to customer impatience?  As an example, I do
wish that James North were still working on games for blind gamers.  When they
came out, they were of high quality and they were unique.

If you think you're finished, you! really! are! finished!!

I think the problem is most people expect the games to be released like in the
cited world. Where you hit midnight and the game is ready to go. This isn’t the
right outlook to have, however I feel like that is what most expect. I think
most people think when you give a date that means everything is good to go and
will be released promptly at midnight. No one has patients.

as soon as a date is mentioned, the vast majority engrave it in stone! and then
start wingeing when the game isn't availabel at 1 minute past midnight on that
date!

We’re just going to have to be patient. Joseph did say it would be somewhat
later in the day, though he wasn’t specific about exactly when. He wants the
entire development team to be able to be present so it’ll depend on when
that’ll happen.
