After reading about the recent post on compasses, it reminded me how one of
these may help when using a leaf blower. I know in the past I'd get all

a new blower. Do they make them any quieter? I'd like one that you can
carry on your back.

[BlindHandyMan] front porch light

2010-09-08 Thread Brice Mijares
Okay, Last weekend we went to OSH to buy a replacement bulb for the porch
light. I got help from one of the service employees. My wife pointed out a
light fixture that was similar to ours so we got the correct light bulb. The
light is suppose to turn on at dust and turn off at dawn VIA a sensor. Well
we have a problem, the light is not turning off. We have to turn it on at
night and turn it off in the morning. So I need some trouble shooting hints
to try out. Thanks

[BlindHandyMan] front porch light

2010-09-04 Thread Brice Mijares
Yesterday we pick up the correct light bulb for the front porch. I believe
it was 40 watts as was suggested by the service a tenant. Came home and
swamp them out. Turned the switch on and the light came on. This puzzled
me as the censor should have known it was light out so the light shouldn't
have came on. So we turned the switch off and turned it back on when it got
dark. When my wife gets up it will be light and I'll have her check it to
see if the light went off on it's own as it should have. I hope the censor
didn't go bad. I can't see both the bulb and the censor going bad at the
same time. So I'm perplexed at the moment.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] porch light

2010-09-03 Thread Brice Mijares
No problems with sub degree coldness here, I live in Central California.
Hardly ever falls below 32 and the front porch is covered. Now, I have to
figure out how to change the light bulb. It is shaped like an octagon with
vertical strips of glass about inch and a half wide and about 6 inches high
with sheet metal between each strip of glass.. If it's like the one we had
at our last home, it's a pain in the ass to change light bulbs as it damn
near falls apart during the process.

[BlindHandyMan] porch light

2010-09-03 Thread Brice Mijares
The light bulb on our front porch went out. Question; being that it has
some kind of censor that turns the light on once it gets dark and turns off
in the morning when it gets light, is it a special light bulb? My wife
thinks so, but I don't think so. I think it'll takes any light bulb
providing it fits in the fixture.

Personally I go to my yahoo groups, scroll down past all the groups, and
there is some check boxes where you can set all active groups to no mail
which takes affect quite quickly. I do this every time I'm going to be away
from the computer more than a couple of days. Then when you are ready to
resume receiving mail, go back to the same check boxes and make the
necessary changes and save the settings.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Using Gas Grill!

2010-08-30 Thread Brice Mijares

No problem, I have a gas grill, a Weber, and a smoker. I use them all with
no problems. You can even buy wire baskets with handles to flip your meats.
For thicker meats you may want to have a talking thermostat on hand.
Personally I use my gas grill for steak, hamburgers, and hot links. Gas
grills tend to burn to damn hot to cook your thicker meats, this is where a
Weber is handy . Next weekend I plan to slow cook a nice size brisket.
I'll start it off in my Weber to get the wood smoke into the meat for a few
hours, then I'll finish of in my gas smoker for another 7 hours or so. Good
luck.

Before I paid anyone to come out, I'd have a friend come over and look for
visible signs. You can see mole growing on the walls. It's under the house
where you can't see it unless someone goes under and takes a look. Good
luck.

[BlindHandyMan] warranty

2010-06-14 Thread Brice Mijares
Thank God for warranties. About 4 years ago I bought a G E side by side
refrigerator. About 6 to 9 months after the purchase my ice maker went on
the blink. So the technician came to the house and fixed it, and while he
was here He suggested that I buy the 5 year extended warranty which I did.
Bounce forward about 3 years, which was a couple months ago, Ice maker went
on the blink again, so they replaced it. Last week, I open the freezer to
get something out and noticed it wasn't as frozen as it should be, didn't
think much of it at the time thinking my wife must have left the door open a
bit. Later, tried to dispense some water from the refrigerator and that
wouldn't work. Push the button for Ice, that worked, so I was perplexed.
Right then, I say to me self, time to call G E again. So G E was scheduled
to come out the next morning. Got up the next morning and the refrigerator
was working fine. When the tech got here I explained to him what had
occurred over the past day. He pulled the refrigerator out from the wall,
unscrewed a panel, went to the service truck, came back with a PC board, put
it in and everything is working fine again. So, 2 Ice makers later, and a
new computer board, I'd say it was worth paying for the extended warranty.

Water lines and sewage are two different animals. Pouring salt down the
drain goes out the sewage pipe. If roots worked it way in the the main
water line coming into the house there would be evidence where the roots
are entering the line due to the constant water pressure.

harbor freight, OSH, or any hardware store will have a good selection of
gloves. Personally I go to Harbor Freight due to there low prices. They
have gardening gloves, leather gloves, cotton gloves, and you can even buy
surgical gloves for a lack of a better term. I like to keep a pair of
flexible leather gloves around for barbecuing. Make it easy when flipping
stuff rapped in foil.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Freakin termites.

2010-05-06 Thread Brice Mijares
Dan, what would be fun if you had sight, would be to use a carbon arc set up
to cut the puppy up! But it can be dangerous and a fire hazard. You use a
carbon arc lead and stick a carbon rod in holder and where it holds the
carbon rod there is a series of holes, maybe 4 or 5, I can't remember.
Anyhow, a compress air line
is hooked up to the lead and once you are ready, you press this button and
air comes out of the tip in the direction of the carbon rod. Once that
carbon rod hits metal the compress air stream blows the metal away. It
sounds like a jet engine it's so loud. When I was a Iron Worker. We'd call
it scarfing metal.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] security light with motion detector

2010-04-10 Thread Brice Mijares
Well there will be no way a tree branch would set it off. My mobile home
has a covered car port that goes the length of the mobile home it's self.
plus I have a tough shed at the end of the car port that's half under the
awning. This is where I'd like to set up some kind of security system.
This way I'd get full security of the car, the patio and anyone trying to
get into my shed.

Hello Betsy, I thought of putting one of those alarms that have a pull pin
but decided against it. Once I'm in bed, I wouldn't want to get up and turn
it off. With a 300 watt light being turned on by a motion detector or heat
sensor and lighting that area like it was day time I think it would scare
the hell out of a thief. It would also be nice to get the person on camera.

Aloha Brice,
How about putting some sort of an alarm on it so
if the can is moved it will squeal. Now that
aluminum cans are worth money, I suspect that
people wander around looking for them.

[BlindHandyMan] security light with motion detector

2010-04-09 Thread Brice Mijares
Can you believe this. We move into a senior citizen mobile home park in
December. I had a regular trash can that I saved our aluminum cans that I
always smash. Well last week, I went outside to dump some and couldn't
fine the trash can. Some lousy sum bitch stole the trash can and all. Now I
need some ideas. I want something like a motion detector that will not only
light up the area, but also start a cam recorder or the likes. It had to be
someone from outside the park that did this as I found out others had there
cans stolen.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] bent ignition key

2010-04-05 Thread Brice Mijares
I don't think it's all that easy as walking in to any hardware store and
having a key made. I believe there is a chip in the key that will allow the
motor to start and won't start without this chip. That's why I was hopeful
I could get it straighthen.

Dan, a few years back, you remove something from your basement. Was it a
feul tank or boiler? Once you got it out of the basement, how did you get
rid of it? Another words, how did you get it down to the street level?
Pprobably to late now, but if I was in your perdictument, I'd have some kind
of rigging that I could layout over those stairs and use a little motorized
tugger to pull them upp the stairs providing it's a straight shot.

Just hearing of you tuning up your car got my ribs a hurting. We use to
have a 73 blazer that I tuned up a couple of times. About 90 percent of the
time your feet were in mid air with all your weight balanced on you ribs.
I'd gets the plugs in, the points in, then call my neighbor over to help me
set the gap on the points. Glad those days are over. Now we just take the
car in. what, maybe 70 thousand miles or so? My wife was always getting mad
at me for doing things she think I couldn't do. Now, she just leaves me
alone and comes to my aid if I need her sight for something. Have a good

Thank You Betsy, I believe you are correct. The web site stated the newer
models had double to triple cycles. Don't think they're energy efficient
though. They use allot of water. Oh well, when my wife gets back IN Town
I'll have her get the users manual out and give me the model number so I can
read the owners manual. She can read it to me, but I can comprehend it
better if I read it myself.

Aloha Brice,
I have a Whirlpool conbo washr/dryer unit. There
is a setting for heavy-duty wash which does
something similar. I suggest that you try to find
out how to set it for a permapress load if you're not sure what it is set
on.

Perhaps if you could find out the model of the
washer, you could download a manual or you could
contact Whirlpool tech support at:
whirlpool_customerexperie...@whirlpool.com

BTW, when I recently contacted them to get a
braille overlay for my new dishwasher, they told
me they no longer provide that service.

[BlindHandyMan] washing machines cycles

2010-03-28 Thread Brice Mijares
Back in December we bought this mobile home. There is a wash room that had
both a washing machine and dryer that the previous owner left. Both are in
excellent condition.. Both units are made by World pool. I've never owned
a world pool, just Kenmore's. With the Kenmore, a normal load took no more
than 40 minutes to finish. With this World pool, it seems as if it takes a
hour an a half. The tub fills up, then it does it's adjatating cycle,
drains, spins, tub fills again for a cycle and starts adjatating again,
drain again, then starts spinning where you hear some water being injected
into the tub as it spins. Then the water injection stops and it spins for
about 5 minutes. In the pas with the Kenmore, the load would be finished,
but with this woorldpool after what you'd think was the final cycle, you
hear a buzz alerting that the load is done. But Wrong! The whole cycle
starts over again. Is there a setting that allows this second cycleto be
shut off? I'm wasting both water and power with this unnecessary secon
cycle.

Blane, do you mine me asking where your from? In my adult life, I've only
live in one place where there was no garbage disposal, and that was in an
apartment. Someone on the list made a comet yesterday that garbage
disposals were becoming a thing of the past.. I beg to differ. Tell a woman
your taking her garbage disposal away. It's to damn convenient for all.
Peeling potatoes and the likes into the sink and washing them down the
disposal is to easy. Beats peeling them over the indoors garbage container.
Besides that, cuts down the odor where you store your trash cans. And if
one decides to start a comp pile, beware of the rank odor they make.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Garbage disposal

2010-03-24 Thread Brice Mijares
Are you serious, Believe me, I'm in no way trying to make fun of you not
knowing what or how a garbage disposal works. But if your serious, it's a
device that is mounted under the sink. Instead of throwing table scraps in
your garbage can, you rinse the scraps off your plate on the sink side where
the disposal is located . Turn the water on and flip the switch and the
table scraps are ground up and sent down the sewage pipe.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Painting indoor walls.

2010-03-24 Thread Brice Mijares
The best product that I know to clean the walls before painting is called
TSP or something like that. It removes all grease and etches the paint. But
it sounds like you need to do some sanding first to remove the pealing
paint. Who ever painted last didn't prepare the walls correctly. More than
likely they painted over dirty greasy walls.

Hi Dale,
It's pealing due to the fact that we used pine sall to wash the wall down a
couple years ago, and we're figuring it was too rough in that spot. By the
way, the people who got the home ready before we bought it weren't the
smartest bunch... ;)

Well, again, you aren't likely to get all of the paint off. The usual thing
to do where you have pealing paint is to scrape off the loose and maybe
scrub it down with a wire brush, again maybe a little sanding gently but not
directly on drywall as this will damage the paper surface then after washing
down paint over.

Getting all of the paint off of most surfaces isn't usually practical. If
you don't prepare the surface well though your new paint will begin pealing
off too.

If there are four coats since 1986 and pealing someone hasn't done a good
preparation at some point.

  Hi,
We can guarantee there is no lead paint. This paint was put on in 2006,
and we had the home inspected before making an offer. We have to strip the
paint, as it is pealing.
We are in the process of becoming lisenced as foster parents, and the
agency has asked us to fix the pealing paint and repaint.
  Sorry for any misunderstanding.

There usually isn't any good reason to remove paint and if it is very old
you probably don't want to remove it for fear you liberate old lead paint.
Generally it is sufficient to wash the paint thoroughly so the new sticks
well although you may also wish to give a gentle scrub with something like
80 grit sand paper to take off any nibs or other high points bearing in mind
the caveat of the possibility of lead paint.

We have to repaint part of our office upstairs. Part of it is cement and
the other part is wood. It looks like at least 4 or 5 thick layers of paint
are already there. How would you take all of the paint off and repaint? We
are total.

Mine is a Allan wrench, somewhere around 3 eights of a inch. Can't be sure
though, don't feel like looking for it. But we keep it in a rocker like
drawer in front of the sink just under the counter top. In the old days,
we'd take the broom handle and stick it down into the garbage disposal and
turn it counter clockwise. good luck.

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] new tile floor- should I seal?

Hello everyone,

I am new to this list and I have a question for the group. Hubby and I are
blind and we are having our home remodeled with new tile floors put in our
kitchen, dining room, sunroom, and utility room. The grout color will be a
medium shade of bone with the grout lines 1/16 inch wide (the tiles
themselves are large-- sorry I can't remember their exact dimensions).
Anyway, I am getting conflicting advice as to whether or not to have the
grout sealed. Some say sealing it is a waste because the grout line is so
thin, the sealant will wear off, and you need to reseal every year. Others
say that sealing the grout will help prevent the grout from absorbing food
spills and stains (I have a guide dog with a very sensitive stomach), and
becoming discolored. What is your advice?

Much thanks,
Linda

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Labelling Tips

Victor, maybe you got a bad role? I've never had a problem with dyno tape
working it'sself loose. I clean the area with soap and water and rinse the
area with a clean cloth before hand. Maybe lay the dyno tape in a warm
place before application to loosen up the sticky surface.

[BlindHandyMan] GFI's

2010-02-25 Thread Brice Mijares
Back in early December my wife and I bought a triple wide mobile home. As
most of you know, that would be in 3 sections joined together. On one of
the outside sections, there is two full bathrooms. After we moved in I had
a electrician friend of mine come in and restore power to both bathrooms
which have GFI's already installed. Once here, he found the problem right
away. On that section there is an outlet on the outside for the patio which
was fried. Also, in the breaker box, the breaker for the 2 bathrooms and the
patio outlet is GFI as well. If I lost you, I'm saying that where the
breaker is tripped, it is also equip with a extra GFI as part of the breaker
switch. That was fried too and was replaced. Well last night I plug in my
digital player to charge in the extra bathroom and there was no juice. I
reset it and asked my wife if she had any problems in the master bath, and
she told me she had to reset it every time she used the blow dryer for her
hair. Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening?

[BlindHandyMan] y-5 was a pain in the arse

2010-02-07 Thread Brice Mijares
First of all, they sent me the phone modem slash Y-5 about 10 days before
they activated the phone line coming to my home. Then I had to call tech
support because there were no real directions to hook it up. Once I found
out it had to be hard wired, I was told to start internet explore and I had
to go through a deregistration procedure. Once that was done, getting a
wireless connection wasn't to hard, but still a pain in the ass to do when
your sighted assistance is computer illiterate.

The type I was referring to has two button on the key itself. One to unlock
the doors, and another that causes the horn to beep as the doors lock.
Also, one of the buttons will beep on and off to locate your car if you
can't remember where your parked, or in case your being attack in a parking
lot. Also called a panic button.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] help needed

2009-06-15 Thread Brice Mijares
Thanks Dan, maybe that's my problem. I just took it for granted that the
wireless end of the router was on by default. Yes, when I set up my desktop
to the router, I change the admin user name and password. Well, I'll give
it a shot again today, and see if I can get my laptop hooked up.

[BlindHandyMan] help needed

2009-06-15 Thread Brice Mijares
Has anyone out there been able to hook up a and receive a wireless
connection to your laptop with out sight? I bought a
Linksys WRT160N Ultra Rang... and was able to get it working with my desktop
because it's hard wired into the router, slipped in the disk and followed
the directions. But, when It came to getting my laptop connected wireless,
I was unsuccessful. My wife can see, but I didn't ask her for help, because
she is totally clueless dealing with computers.

Re: Sweating pipes: [WAS] Re: [BlindHandyMan] Interesting grounding issue.

2009-06-11 Thread Brice Mijares
Not really, especially if you've done it with eye sight. It's all about
heating the joint in a fashion where the solder follows the heat source.
Another words, you'd concentrate the heat on the female part of the joint
just beyond where the male end enters the joint and apply the solder near
the joint on the male side of the joint and the solder is going to run
towards the heat..

Re: [BlindHandyMan] storm door hardware repair

2009-06-10 Thread Brice Mijares
David, what do you consider a storm door? Some years back, I hung what I
call a security door on the door leading to the side of my yard off the
garage. I also hung a glass door with a section of the door that you can
slide up to let fresh air in. This door I hung at the front door. Both
doors came with a door within a frame that mounted right to the framing of
the door entrance with lags that you could screw in, but you couldn't
unscrew.

[BlindHandyMan] nod32 question

2009-06-07 Thread Brice Mijares
I'm a new user of nod32, and have a question. At times I'll email myself to
remind me of what ever of importance. Since using nod32 when I do so, my
own email to myself goes right into the span folder. How can I set it up
not to do so?

Re: [BlindHandyMan] another firewall question

2009-06-04 Thread Brice Mijares
Dan, it only has five ports. if that's what they are called. One of them
for the cable modem hookup, and 4 more to hook up computers.

[BlindHandyMan] hardware firewall help

2009-06-03 Thread Brice Mijares
I was doing some cleaning, better yet, I was trying to untangle all the wire
and cables that the cable company made a mess while hooking up both cable
modems for both internet and phone. While doing so, I forgot where I pulled
out the cables leading in, and out of my linksys router.
Can someone with a linksys router check the layout and let me know where the
in jack from the cable modem goes into the router? Let me know if it's the
jack nearest to the ac power jack, or the furthest away from the ac power
jack. I hope this made sense.
