With your face to the wind you're beginning
to think of a new life,
And you pull tight your cloak 'round your throat
and the wind seems to sing,
Though we're both on the run from a place in the sun
and it's raining,
And there's strangers and dangers and darkness
we're still going to win.
So don't you cry, don't you fear,
wipe away each lonely tear.

If I were king of morning and you were queen of day,
We'd love all summer long together,
love would find a way.
If I were king of evening and you were queen of night,
We'd pass the time in pleasure,
we'd love until the morning light.
If I were king of pleasure and you were queen of pain
you would love me.

As the rain starts to fall, I recall how it was
in the good times,
When the sun seemed to shine
and the wine was a gift from above,
But I know that the day's on the way
and it's bringing the sunshine,
So sing me a song, make it long,
make it all about love.

Love me, love me, love me, love me, say you do
Let me fly away with you
For my love is like the wind

And wild is the wind
Wild is the wind

Give me more than one caress
Satisfy this hungriness
Let the wind blow through your heart

For wild is the wind
Wild is the wind

You touch me
I hear the sound of mandolins
You kiss me
With your kiss my life begins
You're spring to me, all things to me
Don't you know, you're life itself

Like the leaf clings to the tree
Oh my darling, cling to me
For we're like creatures of the wind...

Slobodan Milosevic shuffles off the mortal coil

2006-03-11 Thread Travis Edmunds

Milosevic found dead in cell
Last Updated Sat, 11 Mar 2006 08:34:50 EST
CBC News

Former Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic has been found dead in his cell
at the United Nations war crimes tribunal at The Hague.

An official in the chief prosecutor's office said Milosevic was found
lifeless on his bed around 10 a.m. on Saturday. He apparently had been dead
for several hours, the official said.

The tribunal did not say how Milosevic, 64, had died. French Foreign
Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy told reporters Milosevic had died of natural
causes. An autopsy is planned, along with an inquiry into the death.

Since February 2002, Milosevic had been on trial for war crimes on charges
of genocide and crimes against humanity during the violent breakup of
Yugoslavia in the 1990s.

He suffered a heart condition and high blood pressure, which had repeatedly
interrupted his trial. The hearings were entering the final phase, with
arguments expected to wrap up within a few months.

Milosevic led Serbia, the dominant Yugoslav republic, into four Balkan wars,
including the 1992-95 Bosnia war, in which 200,000 people died.

Where the touch of the lover ends
And the soul of the friend begins
There’s a need to be separate and a need to be one
And a struggle neither wins
Where you gave me the world I was in
And a place I could make a stand
I could never see how you doubted me
When I’d let go of your hand

Yeah, and I was much younger then
And I must have thought that I would know
If things were going to end

And the heavens were rolling
Like a wheel on a track
And our sky was unfolding
And it’ll never fold back
Sky blue and black

Look away from the sea
I can take you anywhere
Spend a vision with me
A chase with the wind

Move closer to me
I can make you anyone
I think you’re ready to see
The gates to babylon

The power of what has been before
Rises to trap you within
A magic carpet ride, a genie maybe more
A city of heavenly sin

Sleep with the devil and then you must pay
Sleep with the devil, the devil will take you away
Oh, gates of babylon

You can see but you’re blind
Someone turned the sun around
But you can see in your mind
The gates of babylon

You’re riding the endless caravan
Bonded and sold as a slave
A saber dance removing all the veils
Getting as good as you gave

Sleep with the devil and then you must pay
Sleep with the devil, the devil will take you away...

Well, I was talking to a mirror image of what supposedly was to be me;
and
the eyes and the nose and the insignificant clothes supported the
testimony. He said, You're doing fine, you know.
You've got an okay mind, you know.
And I would hate to see you throw it away.
 You'd better hold on.
 Hold on. Hold on.
I was telling him I was a bit fatigued about my life, both present and
past;
and when I recalled my thoughts of ending it all with an overdose of
gas, He said, You're doing fine, you know.
You've got an okay mind, you know.
And I would hate to see you throw it away.
 You'd better hold on.
 Hold on. Hold on.

 Hold on
 Hold on
 Hold on

From early days of infancy, through trembling years of youth,

long murky middle-age and final hours long in the tooth,
he is the hundred names of terror, creature you love the least,
picture his name before you, and exorcise the beast.

He roved up and down through history, spectre with tales to tell,
in the darkness when the campfire's dead to each his private hell.
If you look behind your shoulder as you feel his eyes to feast,
you can witness now the everchanging nature of the beast.

Beastie!

If you wear a warmer sporran you can keep the foe at bay,
you can pop those pills and visit some psychiatrist who'll say,
there's nothing I can do for you, everywhere's a danger zone,
I'd love to help get rid of it, but I've got one of my own.

Beastie!

There's a beast upon my shoulder, and a fiend upon my back.
Feel his burning breath a heaving, smoke oozing from his stack.
And he moves beneath the covers, or he lies below the bed.
He's the beast upon your shoulder. He's the price upon your head.

He's the lonely fear of dying, and for some, of living too,
he's your private nightmare pricking, he'd just love to turn the screw.
So stand as one defiant yes, and let your voices swell,
stare that beastie in the face and really give him hell.

Beastie!

There's a beast upon my shoulder, and a fiend upon my back.
Feel his burning breath a heaving, smoke oozing from his stack.
And he moves beneath the covers, or he lies below the bed.
He's the beast upon your shoulder. He's the price upon your head.

Look out!

New Animal Resembling Furry Lobster Found
from Associated Press

PARIS - A team of American-led divers has discovered a new crustacean in
the

South Pacific that resembles a lobster and is covered with what looks like
silky, blond fur, French researchers said Tuesday.

Scientists said the animal, which they named Kiwa hirsuta, was so distinct
from other species that they created a new family and genus for it.

The divers found the animal in waters 7,540 feet deep at a site 900 miles
south of Easter Island last year, according to Michel Segonzac of the
French

Institute for Sea Exploration.

Green Ham and Eggs

2006-01-12 Thread Travis Edmunds

http://www.physorg.com/news9817.html

Scientists in Taiwan have successfully bred three pigs which glow
fluorescent green in the dark, marking a potential breakthrough for stem
cell research, a professor said Thursday.

The team from Taiwan, where the world's first genetically engineered
fluorescent fish were created in 2003, injected a protein extracted from
jelly fish into the nucleus of a pig embryo to breed three male transgenic
pigs, said Professor Wu Shinn-Chih, of National Taiwan University's
Institute and Department of Animal Science and Technology.

It was hoped that the pigs would eventually enable reserachers to trace the
development of tissues when stem cells are used to repair damaged organs, Wu
said.

Yes, this is really important. It should be helpful in the acceleration of
clinical research of human stem cells as it is generally believed that
physically pigs are among the animals which are most similar to human
beings, he told AFP.

I'm not sure if there are fluorescent green pigs elsewhere in the world,
but so far, in the photos available in the field, I have never seen such
pigs, whose whole bodies can glow green in the dark, Wu said.

I was shocked when I saw the animals (glowing) the first time.

Wu dismissed concerns that the technology could endanger the ecosystem.

There is no need to worry about that because, unlike fish, the confined
green pigs have no way to crossbreed with wild species and produce
'Frankenpigs', he said.

Conservationist groups warned of potential serious consequences to the
eco-system after Taiwan's Taikong Corp in 2003 became the world's first
company to sell transgenic fluorescent fish, which was listed as one of the
coolest inventions that year by Time magazine.

If there were any genuineness to this piece of spam, it would be proof
positive of … well, something very interesting.

Usual bla bla bla sob story, right? And then the wire transfer pitch, but
with an interesting (to my mind) twist:

Having known my condition I decided to donate this fund to an individual
or better still a God fearing person who will utilize this money the way I
am going to instruct herein.

Though I may not know you personally I want to tell you that, through
divine word of wisdom from above,I was asked to tell you to do this, not
for me but for The Almighty because you are blessed and you have been
chosen to do mighty works for the Almighty.

…

I do not want a situation where this money will be used in an ungodly
manner, hence the reason for taking this bold decision.

It would seem that God has never visited books.nightwares.com, which
carries stories all about various men doing various ungodly things with one

Ungodly is just another word for tax free.

Yeah, but IIRC he changed it after getting pressured into it, either by
other editors or possibly authors. I could be wrong though.

From what I've been able to gather through some cursory spelunking, you're
partly correct. But either way I can't find any concrete information on the
exact circumstances surrounding the term. Scientifiction, which Gernsback
_did_ come up with, appears to be inexorably linked to the coining of the
term science fiction through rejection of the former. But whether or not
him or his editors or his contemporaries actually invented it, Hugo seems to
be getting all the credit all the same.

The Oldest American?

2005-07-05 Thread Travis Edmunds

http://www.mexicanfootprints.co.uk/

The discovery of 40,000 years old human footprints in Central Mexico
challenges accepted theories on when and how humans first colonised the
Americas.

The timing, route and origin of the first colonisation of the Americas
remains one of the most contentious topics in human evolution. Experts from
many disciplines are searching for the answers to three seemingly
straightforward questions:

• From where did the first people come?

• How did they enter the Americas?

• When did they arrive?

Until recently archaeologists thought they had the answers to these
questions. Evidence suggested that the Americas had been colonised towards
the end of the Pleistocene period by hunter-gatherers migrating from Siberia
into Alaska across the Bering Land Bridge, an exposed continental shelf,
when sea levels were lower. This is known as the Clovis-First Model.

According to this model the earliest occupation of the Americas began 11,500
years ago.

The discovery of fossilised human footprints in the Valsequillo Basin,
Central Mexico challenges this accepted viewpoint and provides new evidence
that humans settled in the Americas as early as 40,000 years ago.

The footprints were discovered in the summer of 2003, on the floor of an
abandoned quarry by Dr Silvia Gonzalez, Professor David Huddart (Liverpool
John Moores University) and Professor Matthew Bennett (Bournemouth
University). At the time of the discovery the team were working on dating
and mapping the geology of the Valsequillo Basin, Puebla, Mexico.

Dr Gonzalez is one of a growing number of scientists who believes that the
first Americans may have arrived by water rather than on foot, island
hopping along the Pacific coast. Click here to find out more about her
research on the Pacific Coastal Migration Route.

The footprints research was carried out as part of a wider project funded by
NERC through the EFCHED programme, entitled ‘Human dispersals and
environmental controls during the Late Pleistocene / Early Holocene in
Mexico: Implications for the Peopling of the Americas’. The research is also
supported by INAH (Instituto Nacional de Antropologia e Historia) in Mexico.

Russian astrologer sues NASA over comet experiment

2005-07-04 Thread Travis Edmunds

http://www.physorg.com/news4927.html

July 04, 2005

A Russian astrologer took legal action against NASA for compensation Monday,
claiming that the US space agency's bombardment of the Tempel 1 comet will
upset her horoscope and violates her spiritual rights.

The experiment, in which NASA fired a projectile the size of a fridge at the
comet Monday, was an attack on the holy of holies, Marina Bai's law suit
claims, according to Russian press reports. Her suit, filed at a Moscow
court, claims violation of her life and spiritual values.

In any case, it is obvious that elements of the comet's orbit and
associated ephemera will change after the explosion, which interferes with
my practice of astrology and deforms my horoscope, the Izvestia daily
quoted Bai as saying.

Bai is demanding 8.7 billion rubles (300 million dollars, 250 million euros)
compensation.

Her lawyer, Alexander Molokhov, told the Moscow Echo radio that the case is
based on solid legal ground, since NASA has a representative office on
Russian territory.

Bai originally attempted to have a court prevent the experiment from taking
place, but her suit was rejected. After a higher city court intervened, the
court agreed to hear the case -- though too late to protect Tempel 1.

The NASA probe rammed into the comet, which lies 133 million kilometers (83
million miles) from Earth, early Monday as part of an experiment that
scientists hope will help reveal how the Universe was formed.

as something that myself and Travis have discussed on more then one
occasion. The reinvention of the wheel is not so much needed as the drive
train needs to be updated, or the vehicle that it moves needs to be
changed.
Something that we have discussed has been running 2 separate shows that
take
place during the same time period about 20yrs post Nemesis. That way you
can

bring in the aging TNG DS9 and Voyager characters in some roles as admirals
or retired SF members and what not. However the show lengths will only be
30mins one show would be based on star fleet academy say Star Trek:
Star Fleet Academy and would follow the lives of 6 classmates as them go
through their training. The other would be based on the Romulan fleet
academy and again would follow the lives of 4 class mates and a few
instructors. The 2 shows would run in the normal 1h time slot back to back,
for approx 4 - 5 seasons. 4 seasons being for their actual school time
frame, and season 5 for the first year of their deployment onto a starship
or else where. During season 4 1 other new show will be introduced and will
be a regular 1h slot and will air every 2weeks. It will build up the story
for season 5+, and will be done as an alternating story line where in the
off weeks the Romulan show will air. after season 5 and 1 and 2 of the
new series. They will conclude in one massive join finale that will set the
stage for the next show which will either bring all casts together in a
joint operation/adventure, or set them as advisories.

I know it would cost a fortune but it would be an amazing way to move
startrek ahead and really expand on the Romulan story lines.

blush

I have absolutely NO recollection of discussing such things even once! Let
alone more than once...

be?

Hard to say. Personally though I'd like to see a jump to the not so
distant future. Similar to the TOS - TNG transition in essence; i.e. far
enough ahead to evoke the sense of progression for this universe, yet
close enough to be easily connected with present day Trek a la the
conclusion of Voyager.

I have been hoping for a while that we'd see a darker Federation. A Fed
from the perspective of colony worlds who had not joined it, who didn't
want (necessarily) to join it. Set it in the Kirk era, when tensions were
at their all-time high.

I mean -- OK, so the Federation features high tech, highfalutin
philosophies and of course lean hardbodied crew. Wouldn't it be magnificent
to see the story of a world that didn't want to get barcoded and look
exactly like FedVolken? These people, maybe, have had to eke out a living
for decades on some barely survivable rock at the farthest fringe of
almost-forgotten space. They have traded with the Ferengi, the Klingons and
even the Romulans on more or less even terms, and they've managed over the
years to develop their own culture and sense of independence.

Along comes some guy in a big shiny vessel with a command shirt and a brief
to standardize the planet to Fed guidelines. But they don't *want* those
guidelines. To them the Fed is little different from the Borg. And because
of strategic position or planetary reserves, the Fed wants them badly, but
the Ferengi, Klingons and Romulans would all benefit from seeing this world
retain its non-Federation affiliation.

What happens then?

And suppose these people have access to Fed history (current events?) ...
and often quote one James Tiberius Kirk regarding the values of
independence, internal ethics and so forth?

Use the Trek model to interrogate the values of the Federation, IOW. That
to me would be interesting, particularly if there was no reset button.
Wouldn't it be cool to see a Fed captain saying something like, Prime
Directive be damned! We MUST have this planet! We WILL have this planet!
Disable their shield and arm the torpedoes!

Not tea bag of an idea really (current political parallels aside), but it's
my understanding that fans have already been dealt the dark side of things
with DS9, and by and large want a return to the more quixotical side of
things best exemplified by early TNG and of course the irrepressible and
avant-garde TOS.

I'll try to dig up some articles on that if I can.

ITER

2005-06-28 Thread Travis Edmunds

http://www.physorg.com/news4786.html

June 28, 2005

The Six Parties of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor
(ITER) consortium have reached a decision in their negotiations, specifying
the location of the world’s first energy-producing fusion reactor in
Cadarache, in Southern France. The €10 billion project will generate
multiple research opportunities for the Plasma Physics Research Centre at
the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL).

ITER's future location in Cadarache will be doubly beneficial to EPFL. In
its role as a National Centre of Competence, The Plasma Physics Research
Centre (CRPP) is fully integrated with the nuclear fusion research programs
within the Euratom-Swiss Confederation framework. CRPP will thus be called
upon to participate in various specialized, high technology facets of the
reactor’s construction.

This level of participation will confirm and solidify CRPP’s reputation in
the plasma physics community. Minh Quang Tran, director of the Centre, also
holds a position as president of the European Fusion Development Agreement,
the organization that coordinates all fusion-related technology as well as
all work involving the JET (Joint European Torus), a intermediate-generation
tokamak-type experimental fusion reactor.

“The synergies that will develop in this research environment will reinforce
the links between EPFL and the main European centers of fusion research
excellence, in their common quest for a new and promising means of safe,
efficient and sufficient energy production,” notes Tran. As a key player in
this international involvement, Switzerland also stands to benefit in a
larger sense from industrial spin-offs that will result from the project.

An enormous energy potential

Nuclear fusion represents a practically unlimited source of energy. Under
extremely high pressures and temperatures, light atoms – isotopes of
hydrogen, such as deuterium and tritium—come together, or fuse, producing
enormous amounts of energy. A prime example is the Sun, where huge
gravitational pressure allows fusion to take place at about 10 million
degrees Celsius. At the gravitational pressure we experience on Earth,
higher temperatures are required to generate fusion, and to date only
tokamak-type reactors are capable of reaching the 100 million-degree-Celsius
threshold where energy can be produced.

In the last several years, considerable technological progress has been made
in fusion research, leading to high expectations for the ITER. With this
reactor, studies done at the CRPP and elsewhere on the feasibility and
functioning of a nuclear fusion-based centre of electricity production can
be brought to a successful conclusion, and the groundwork can be laid for
the first prototype commercial fusion reactor. Up to this point
energy-producing nuclear reactors have used fission, not fusion, to generate
energy. Fusion reactors have important advantages; power stations will be
inherently safe because “meltdown” or “runaway reactions” cannot occur, and
these reactors do not generate long-lasting radioactive waste. Fusion
reactors don’t emit greenhouse gases, and the basic fuels – hydrogen and
lithium – are abundant and available everywhere.

The energy production of ITER will be unprecedented: a single gram of
deuterium fused with one and a half grams of tritium will produce ten
million times as much energy as a gram of oil. The successful launch of
these new technologies in the ITER reactor will set the stage for the
successful use of fusion as an inexhaustible and sustainable energy source.

Kenyan grandfather, 73, kills leopard with hands

A 73-year-old Kenyan grandfather reached into the mouth of an
attacking leopard and tore out its tongue to kill it, authorities said
on Wednesday.

Peasant farmer Daniel M'Mburugu was tending to his potato and bean
crops in a rural area near Mount Kenya when the leopard charged out of
the long grass and leapt on him.

M'Mburugu had a machete in one hand but dropped that to thrust his
fist down the leopard's mouth. He gradually managed to pull out the
animal's tongue, leaving it in its death-throes.

Not bad! Not only do I know how to defend against a shark (the nose as
everybody surely knows), but I now have a sure-fire way to take down the big
cats!

Guitarist Domenic Troiano dies

2005-05-29 Thread Travis Edmunds

http://www.cbc.ca/story/arts/national/2005/05/26/Arts/troiano050526.html

Last Updated Thu, 26 May 2005 18:04:24 EDT

TORONTO - Veteran Canadian guitar player Domenic Troiano has died after a
decade-long battle with cancer.

Troiano, who played in groups ranging from the Guess Who to Bush to the
James Gang, was 59. He passed away late Wednesday.

His absolute skill as a musician, certainly in the '60s, it was
unsurpassed, long-time friend Larry LeBlanc, Billboard's Canada bureau
chief, told the Canadian Press. Everybody wanted to be Troiano.

Starting his career in the 1960s, Troiano carved out a reputation in musical
circles as a musician's musician. He played in a long list of bands,
including an early stint as a backup player for Ronnie Hawkins. He spent
1974-75 with the Guess Who and played for countless non-Canadian performers,
including blues legend Etta James, Joe Cocker and Diana Ross.

He could play anything. And he was so good at it, said Toronto broadcaster
John Donabie, who interviewed Troiano in the 1960s when he was a member of
the pioneering Canadian group the Mandala. Along with other members of that
group, Troiano founded Bush, which released one album in 1970.

Domenic Troiano lived for making music, said LeBlanc. His hits included
Bush's I Can Hear You Calling.

Known to his friends as Donnie, Troiano was born in Modugno, Italy, and
became a naturalized Canadian in 1955. He spent the rest of his life in
Toronto, except for a brief period in the 1970s when he called Los Angeles
home.

In the 1980s, the prolific guitarist turned to composing for television
programs like Night Heat, Hot Shots and Diamonds. He served as a producer
for Moe Koffman and others, and in 1996 his skills as an axeman were
recognized when he was made a member of the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.

Troiano's recent credits include doing the soundtrack for the video game
Fahrenheit in 1995.

Every guitar player in Canada knows of Domenic Troiano, said LeBlanc. And
most of the guitar players in Canada will sit back and pause a bit today.

Troiano is survived by his mother, brother and sister. He was married
briefly to singer Shawne Jackson, but the relationship ended in divorce
about 10 years ago.

A funeral is planned for Monday in Toronto.

Star Wars Episode 0

2005-05-27 Thread Travis Edmunds

http://entertainment.sympatico.msn.ca/celebs/articles/1180018.armx

(BANG) - George Lucas is set to make another 'Star Wars' movie after
promising fans the latest instalment would be the last.

The director is reportedly planning a seventh sequel of the popular sci-fi
series after telling friends he wants to develop the story further.

Lucas has already outlined the plot of the as-yet untitled movie, which will
take place 100 years before current film 'Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of
the Sith'.

A movie insider said: George believes there are even more stories to tell.

His latest idea would feature an almost all-new cast, apart from the Jedi
master Yoda, who would be the hero of the new movie.

Lucas's plan is sure to excite 'Star Wars' fans as the tiny green character
is a cult hero among devotees.

In the saga, Yoda, voiced by Frank Oz, famously trained Jedi knight Luke
Skywalker to defeat evil villain Darth Vader.

However, a spokesperson for the movie-maker refused to confirm the plans.

Me:

But yeah, I think there's some fairly decent music on that album.
 And
if I could afford to I'd probably buy one. Hell, I'll probably buy
one anyway. In a while. When I get a job.

I like to think that AMYCD is an example of what Brin talks about when
he discusses the rise of competent amateurism. In AFAIK only one piece
was recorded in a studio (and I am pretty sure that was a piecemeal
affair). The rest were recorded in bedrooms, living rooms, basements
and converted garages. Most were recorded using the artists personal
computer. I am quite amazed at the quality results one can achieve in
such ordinary circumstances.

Yeah I know a few people who record in their bedrooms etc, and the quality
of the music can be suprising.

As for the competent amateurism bit, I must say that personal experience on
my part leads me to agree with you and of course da Docta. There are many
amateur artists out there breeding competent creation in a variety of
different mediums. Some even go so far as to excel and consequently rival
the pros. Some.

Anyway, kudos for helping to get the muzak out there. You just went

and I kept getting brought back to Debbie's post (the one that I made a joke

As I see it the problem is not religion; it's undisciplined, irrational
thought -- and that is as prevalent *outside* of any church as it is
inside. If you want to have a productive discussion with a religious
person, attack the faulty thought process rather than its results.
That's a mouthful right there, let me tell ya. A little on the idyllic side
of the fence considering the set human precedent, but such sublimity usually
is. Besides, it bespeaks the will to carry forward through our own
fallibility, which, in and of itself is a precedent that we try and set,
again, through the veil of our own fallibility, to ultimately persevere in
the struggle to ensure that the institutions we leave behind are better than
those willed to us by our forefathers. Or something like that...

Warren, you are a noble beast!

Rob:
Creating music is hard hard hard hard hard.
Dave:
I have a friend, Ted Larson, who is one of those guys who, at a church
retreat, can decide at lunch time that he's going to write a song for
the campfire that night and do it.
Don't we all have a Ted Larson striking a chord within our lives?
But I think the aforementioned spammer was referring specifically to
multi-faceted music; as in a full set of instruments coming together to
create some coherent noise as opposed to say, a guy ad-libbing with an
acoustic guitar.

Rob:
I also write lyrics. The Grand Machine is the result of my writing,
and was inspired by The Time Ships by Brin's buddy S. Baxter.
And Dave again:
Writing is also hard. Maybe not hard hard hard hard hard, but certainly
hard hard hard.
I wouldn't say that it's necessarily hard per se. But it depends of course
on whence you come. For if you mean that those sublime moments of profound
insight into the human condition as expressed by the author through the
_character_ are hard, then yes, I suppose they are. We are after all
somewhat limited in our profundity (see - partial digression below).

If however you meant that the methodical construction process and everything
that comes with it is difficult, then I disagree. Tedious yes, at times, but
hardly hard. Albeit you _do_ have to be on your game to write something
decent all the same...

A partial digression (pardon the messy link):
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0152052089/qid=1114703314/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/103-4510934-2317420
In her dandy little book, Very Far Away From Anywhere Else (87 pages),
Ursula K. Le Guin uses her main character, Owen, to dole out erudite
insights like they're goin' outta style. In fact, such is the compact air of
intellectual complexity surrounding Owen, that he makes Anne Rice characters
pale in comparison.

As one reviewer put it, I still can't believe Le Guin fit so much into such
a short book.

And that my friend is the mark one who reads but doesn't write. Meaning that
the above comment shows a naivete towards the writing process - specifically
that it was a difficult task to squeeze so much insightfulness into such a
small space - whereas such thinking is, in actuality, antithetical to the
truth; i.e. it would have been much more difficult (if not impossible) to
sustain such writing throughout a longer novel.

My degree's in writing, but not lyrics. The tough part
is making it rhythmical (and maybe even rhyming) without making it
doggerel.
I think I read the doggerel bit in a textbook once...
As for the first sentence, could you elaborate a little?

A whale of a tale!

2005-04-22 Thread Travis Edmunds

April 21
Beamed Into Space: Whale Songs
From the deep ocean into the depths of space, the first live whale songs are
to be broadcast into the cosmos on April 22 - Earth Day.
Providing the service is the Deep Space Communications Network, a private
organization located near the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Making use of
a large dish antenna, the group will blast the whale songs out to some 3.5
light years into deep space covering an estimated distance of 18 trillion
miles.

The distance the whale songs signal could go into the universe beyond the 18
trillion miles -- and still be detectable by other non-terrestrial systems
-- “is an ongoing matter of speculation,” said Jim Lewis of Deep Space
Communications Network.

The Sirius Institute, located in Puna, Hawaii, contracted the Deep Space
Communications Network to perform the duty.

Members of the whale chorus whose songs will be sent live into space are
from pods of Humpback whales off the coast of Maui. Whalesong.net
(http://www.whalesong.net) will provide the live feed of whale music making
use of an underwater microphone in the Pacific Ocean near Maui, Hawai'i.

Michael Hyson, research director for the Sirius Institute, said that
dolphins and whales are the oldest sentient race on the planet, and it’s
about time they shared their songs with the universe.

Humpback whale songs are included in the gold records that are attached to
the still-outbound Voyager spacecraft. But this is the first time that live
whale songs will be transmitted into space.

The cat’s meow

2005-04-21 Thread Travis Edmunds
http://www.livescience.com/animalworld/050420_yellowstone_microbes.html
By Michael Schirber
LiveScience Staff Writer
posted: 20 April 2005
02:23 pm ET
Life once again proves its resiliency.
Scientists from the University of Colorado have found bacteria that live in
the rocks of a hot, acidic environment in Yellowstone National Park.

Such extremophiles – organisms that can tough it out at sub-zero
temperatures or with little water –are the cat’s meow to astrobiologists,
who want to determine the origin of life here on Earth, as well as estimate
good spots to look for life elsewhere.

The new microbes were discovered in Norris Geyser Basin – considered to be
the most active area in Yellowstone. Temperatures are around 95 degrees
Fahrenheit, and acid seeps into the stone.

The pores in the rocks where these creatures live hasa pH value of one,
which dissolves nails, said Norman Pace. This isanother example that life
can be robust in an environment most humans view as inhospitable.

Like a miner looking for gold, Pace’s co-author Jeffrey Walker discovered
the new microbe community in 2003 when he broke apart a chunk of
sandstone-like rock and noticed a green band just beneath the surface.

It was one of those 'eureka' moments, he said.
The researchers used a kind of genetic screening to identify the critters in
the rock. The most abundant microbes, surprisingly, were a new species of
Mycobacterium. Bacteria from this group, which can cause tuberculosis and
leprosy, had never been seen around a geyser before.

Besides being “pretty weird,” these and other bacteria apparently leave
fossil imprints in the rocks they inhabit. These “biosignatures” could be
red flags for life in past or present geothermal environments on other
planets, like Mars.

The prevalence of this type of microbial life in Yellowstone means that
Martian rocks associated with former hydrothermal systems may be the best
hope for finding evidence of past life there, Walker said.

The research, which was funded by the National Science Foundation and NASA,
is reported in the April 21 issue of Nature.

On the Pope's death; I have always wondered how, if he is the true
successor to Christ, he does not end up being resurrected bodily, as the
Bible says His followers will do greater works than He (Jesus), and By
their fruits ye shall know them. Seems to me that if he is not healed or
raised from the dead, this Roman cult cannot really claim to be the true
successors to Christ.
He's not the successor of Christ. He's the successor of John, in whom
Christ gave his authority to create a church.
I'm way behind and consequently playing ketchup...ah...catch-up...and
anyway, I'm pretty sure that someone has already jumped on this...but wasn't
it Peter and not John who was given the aforementioned authority to create
the church?

One or two of you may remember 3 years or so ago when I got all
excited because some of my lyrics made it on to an album.
I just discovered that the album is available on ITunes.
The downside is that the song I contributed to is broken up into 4
parts. (At 17:41 running time that is understandable. Progyou
gotta love itor giggle a bit)
The band is Dreamship and the song is The Grand Machine (but it
doesn't appear under that name)
The pertinent pieces are:
The Young Man (6:16)
The Traveller The Wanderer (3:27)
Touching the Future (4:03)
My Machine Alive (3:55)
But what the hey, the song comes out on our new compilation in two
weeks anyway.
I remember inquiring about your musical endeavors sometime last year after
you mentioned something on the matter in one of the music threads. And
finally I get an answer...

Sarcastic, yes. But that's pretty cool all the same.

Peering through the Keyhole (Satellite Maps a la Google)

2005-04-06 Thread Travis Edmunds
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/tech/google-satellite-maps-42009.html
Google Feature Incorporates Satellite Maps
04/05/05 9:23 AM PT
The satellite maps could unnerve some people, even as the technology
impresses others. That's because the Keyhole technology is designed to
provide close-up perspective of specific addresses.

Online search engine leader Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) has unveiled a new
feature that will enable its users to zoom in on homes and businesses using
satellite images, an advance that may raise privacy concerns as well as
intensify the competitive pressures on its rivals.

The satellite technology, which Google began offering late yesterday online,
is part of the package that the Mountain View-based company acquired when it
bought digital map maker Keyhole Corp. for an undisclosed amount nearly six
months ago.

Free Access
This marks the first time since the deal closed that Google has offered free
access to Keyhole's high-tech maps through its search engine. Users
previously had to pay US$29.95 to download a version of Keyhole's basic
software package.

A more traditional map will continue to be the first choice served up by
Google's search engine. Users will have the option of retrieving a satellite
picture by clicking on a button.

The satellite maps could unnerve some people, even as the technology
impresses others. That's because the Keyhole technology is designed to
provide close-up perspective of specific addresses.

Keyhole's previous government ties also have raised anxieties.
Founded in 2001, Keyhole raised some money in 2003 from In-Q-Tel, a venture
capital firm backed by the Central Intelligence Agency. Leading up to the
Google sale, Keyhole's roughly 10,000 customers included a cross-section of
government agencies.

There is little reason for people to be paranoid about the satellite maps
because the images generally are six to 12 months old, said John Hanke,
Keyhole's general manager. And it's not like you are going to be able to
read a license plate on a car or see what an individual was doing when a
particular image was taken, he said.

Convenience, Reach
Google believes most people will like the convenience of generating a
satellite image with a few clicks of a computer mouse. The company envisions
people using the service as a way to scout a hotel's proximity to the beach
for a possible vacation or size up the neighborhood where an apartment is
for rent.

Google's free satellite maps initially will be limited to North America,
with images covering roughly half the United States, Hanke said.

Although Google is offering the satellite maps on a test basis, the feature
will probably force its other online rivals to upgrade their technology,
predicted search industry analyst Greg Sterling of the Kelsey Group. To
play in this space, you are going to need some robust mapping capabilities.

Sterling said Google's satellite maps pose the biggest threat to Mapquest, a
service owned by Time Warner (NYSE: TWX) Corp. that has long operated the
most popular Web site for finding directions.

The satellite maps also up the ante for the many challengers chipping away
at Google's share of the lucrative Internet search engine market by adding
more bells and whistles. For instance, Amazon.com's (Nasdaq: AMZN) A9
search engine earlier this year introduced a feature that includes an index
containing 20 million street-level photographs of building exteriors in 10
major U.S. cities.

The glow of distant worlds

2005-03-23 Thread Travis Edmunds
http://www.physorg.com/news3475.html
Astronomers from NASA said Tuesday that NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope has
for the first time ever captured the light from two known Jupiter-like
planets orbiting stars other than our Sun. This extraordinary, spectacular
achievement marks the beginning of a new age of planetary science, in which
extrasolar planets can be directly measured and compared.

The Spitzer Space Telescope was launched into space by a Delta rocket from
Cape Canaveral, Florida on 25 August 2003. During its 2.5-year mission,
Spitzer will obtain images and spectra by detecting the infrared energy, or
heat, radiated by objects in space between wavelengths of 3 and 180 microns
(1 micron is one-millionth of a meter). Most of this infrared radiation is
blocked by the Earth's atmosphere and cannot be observed from the ground.
Consisting of a 0.85-meter telescope and three cryogenically-cooled science
instruments, Spitzer is the largest infrared telescope ever launched into
space.

Spitzer has provided us with a powerful new tool for learning about the
temperatures, atmospheres and orbits of planets hundreds of light-years from
Earth, said Dr. Drake Deming of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center,
Greenbelt, Md., lead author of a new study on one of the planets.

It's fantastic, said Dr. David Charbonneau of the Harvard- Smithsonian
Center for Astrophysics, Cambridge, Mass., lead author of a separate study
on a different planet. We've been hunting for this light for almost 10
years, ever since extrasolar planets were first discovered. The Deming
paper appears today in Nature's online publication; the Charbonneau paper
will be published in an upcoming issue of the Astrophysical Journal.

So far, all confirmed extrasolar planets, including the two recently
observed by Spitzer, have been discovered indirectly, mainly by the wobble
technique and more recently, the transit technique. In the first method, a
planet is detected by the gravitational tug it exerts on its parent star,
which makes the star wobble. In the second, a planet's presence is inferred
when it passes in front of its star, causing the star to dim, or blink. Both
strategies use visible-light telescopes and indirectly reveal the mass and
size of planets, respectively.

In the new studies, Spitzer has directly observed the warm infrared glows of
two previously detected hot Jupiter planets, designated HD 209458b and
TrES-1. Hot Jupiters are extrasolar gas giants that zip closely around their
parent stars. From their toasty orbits, they soak up ample starlight and
shine brightly in infrared wavelengths.

To distinguish this planet glow from that of the fiery hot stars, the
astronomers used a simple trick. First, they used Spitzer to collect the
total infrared light from both the stars and planets. Then, when the planets
dipped behind the stars as part of their regular orbit, the astronomers
measured the infrared light coming from just the stars. This pinpointed
exactly how much infrared light belonged to the planets. In visible light,
the glare of the star completely overwhelms the glimmer of light reflected
by the planet, said Charbonneau. In infrared, the star-planet contrast is
more favorable because the planet emits its own light.

The Spitzer data told the astronomers that both planets are at least a
steaming 1,000 Kelvin (727 degrees Celsius, 1340 Fahrenheit). These
measurements confirm that hot Jupiters are indeed hot. Upcoming Spitzer
observations using a range of infrared wavelengths are expected to provide
more information about the planets' winds and atmospheric compositions.

The findings also reawaken a mystery that some astronomers had laid to rest.
Planet HD 209458b is unusually puffy, or large for its mass, which some
scientists thought was the result of an unseen planet's gravitational pull.
If this theory had been correct, HD 209458b would have a non-circular orbit.
Spitzer discovered that the planet does in fact follow a circular path.
We're back to square one, said Dr. Sara Seager, Carnegie Institution of
Washington, Washington, co-author of the Deming paper. For us theorists,
that's fun.

Spitzer is ideally suited for studying extrasolar planets known to transit,
or cross, stars the size of our Sun out to distances of 500 light-years. Of
the seven known transiting planets, only the two mentioned here meet those
criteria. As more are discovered, Spitzer will be able to collect their
light - a bonus for the observatory, considering it was not originally
designed to see extrasolar planets. NASA's future Terrestrial Planet Finder
coronagraph, set to launch in 2016, will be able to directly image
extrasolar planets as small as Earth.

Shortly after its discovery in 1999, HD 209458b became the first planet
detected via the transit method. That result came from two teams, one led by
Charbonneau. TrES-1 was found via the transit method in 2004 as part of the
NASA-funded

Several Imax cinemas in the US have refused to show films referring to the
theory of evolution for fear of a religious backlash, it is reported.
I think this next article is a nice complement to the above:

Evolution: It's Only a Theory, But One Worth Teaching
By Edna DeVore

My prior column was composed at 35,000 feet above North America as I
surveyed the landscape from the air. The patterns etched by geological
evolution are visible at altitude. Closer up, fossils tell the story of
earlier life upon our continent. Gazing to the heavens, astronomers gather
evidence of the evolution of planets, stars, galaxies—the whole universe
evolves. Natural history museums host large collections of extant and
extinct life that document biological evolution. Yet, as I noted, teaching
evolution remains controversial in America.

A flood of email ensued. Many were supportive; some asked questions. Several
negative and hostile emails were openly critical of my assertion that
American schools should teach evolution in science classrooms to leave no
child behind. In addition to rejecting evolution for religious reasons,
several people claimed that there was not sufficient evidence, that
scientists could not all agree, or that evolution is only a theory which
they equate with an unfounded idea.

Evolution is supported by evidence. There are several thousand peer-reviewed
scientific journals where the evidence is presented in article after
article. Natural history museums house large collections of fossils that
document the history of life. Geologists and astronomers have a massive
amount of observational evidence of the long-term change in physical
systems: stars, galaxies, planets, interstellar dust, asteroids, etc.
Biologists observe and document the patterns of the evolution of life: for
example, the fossil record, DNA, and the observation of evolution in action
such as the adaptive evolution of antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria
that now pose a serious threat to human health. Selective breeding in
agriculture generated our crops and domestic animals over thousands of
years; agriculture is evolution in action.

Certainly, there are continuing debates among scientists about the
particulars of cosmic, planetary, and biological evolution. The nature of
science requires continual questioning of ideas, evidence and theories.
Theoretical scientists consider what we know, and pose new ideas and models
to explain the natural world. New models and ideas generate new scientific
tests of theory: observational experiments at Earth and space-based
observatories, high-energy collisions of particle physics, deep-sea dives at
the plate boundaries, and lab experiments in molecular biology to cite a
few. Science is based upon observational and experimental evidence. Concepts
that don’t match observations are altered or tossed out. It’s an iterative
cycle. Likewise, if a scientist makes an observation or does an experiment
that cannot be replicated, the results are suspect. Scientific explanations
of the natural world are tested against nature, and discarded if they do not
work. Consider cold fusion. Science is a self-correcting system that
provides humans with powerful descriptions that allow us to understand and
predict how the natural world works.

Consider Johannes Kepler, a mathematician who is often cited as one of the
first modern astronomers. He took observational data collected by Tycho
Brahe who was a terrific observer and had mounds of measurements for Mars.
Brahe challenged Kepler to make sense of these Mars data. Tycho had his own
ideas, but he didn’t have Kepler’s mathematical skills. Kepler spent months
trying to fit the Mars data to the circular epicycles and deferents that
explained planetary orbits in the astronomical tradition of his day. The
data just didn’t fit. Unlike his predecessors, Kepler took a leap toward
modern science. He elected to trust the data, and abandoned the ancient
model of circles upon circles for a new description of planetary motion. His
ideas can be condensed into three statements which we call Kepler’s laws. In
their simplest form, they are: planets orbit on elliptical paths with the
Sun at one focus; the period of a planet’s orbit is proportional to it’s
distance from the Sun; and a planet’s speed in orbit is proportional to its
distance from the Sun (equal areas are swept out in equal time). Kepler
didn’t know why the planets orbited as they did, but he could describe their
orbits and make accurate predictions about future positions. The

“JEOPARDY!” LAUNCHES THE ULTIMATE TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS

2005-02-08 Thread Travis Edmunds
And for those of you who don't keep up to date with the date, it starts
tomorrow...

http://www.jeopardy.com/
(Culver City, February 7 , 2005) - They’re coming from as far away as
Thailand, South Africa and Holland, all for the chance to answer the
question, “Who is the best JEOPARDY! player ever?” On Wednesday, February
9th, JEOPARDY!, America’s Favorite Quiz Show®, will begin broadcast of its
biggest tournament to date, The Ultimate Tournament of Champions, a 15-week
mega-tourney, reuniting the greatest players in JEOPARDY!’s 21-year history.

In November 2004, JEOPARDY! phenomenon Ken Jennings entered the record books
as the biggest money-winner in game show history, prompting the question,
“How would he do against other JEOPARDY! greats?” Now, the producers of the
hit television quiz show are prepared to answer that question by launching a
special series of shows spotlighting competition among nearly 150 classic
JEOPARDY! champions - culminating with a $2 Million dollar cash prize to the
winner.

“The 2003 rule change, which allows JEOPARDY! players to keep playing until
they’re defeated, raised the question about how other five-time champions
might have played under this rule,” said JEOPARDY! Executive Producer Harry
Friedman. “This Tournament is an opportunity to give those past champions
another chance to shine.”

Invited to compete in the Tournament are the winners of every JEOPARDY!
Tournament of Champions, College Championship and Teen Tournament, and the
field will include over 100 of the top-scoring, undefeated, five-time
champions since the show began in 1984. Collectively, these JEOPARDY!
champions have won over $15 Million dollars in their past appearances.

The tournament participants will compete in a series of games, which will
narrow the field to two players who will compete against Ken Jennings in the
finals, to be broadcast in May. Winners of the games in every round of the
tournament will keep their winnings, with minimum guarantees throughout, and
non-winners receive cash consolation prizes.

The format of JEOPARDY!’s Ultimate Tournament of Champions is as follows:
ROUND ONE
135 players compete in one game each. Winners of the games in Round One of
the tournament will keep their winnings, with a minimum guarantee of
$15,000, and advance to the next round of competition. Non-winners will
receive $5,000.

ROUND TWO
45 winners from Round One will be joined by nine “seeded” players and play
one game each. The seeded players were selected based on past
accomplishments and status as record holders:

Chuck Forrest: Record holder in regular winnings ($72,800) until Season 6.
Frank Spangenberg: Record holder in regular winnings ($102,597) from Season
6 until Season 19.
Brian Weikle: Record holder in regular winnings ($149,200) from Season 19
until five-day rule change.
Robin Carroll: Most cumulative (including all tourneys) money won on
JEOPARDY! ($224,100) until the Million Dollar Masters Tournament.
Brad Rutter: 1st Place Million Dollar Masters winner, and most money won on
JEOPARDY! ($1,155,102), until Ken Jennings.
Eric Newhouse: 2nd place, JEOPARDY! Million Dollar Masters.
Bob Verini: 3rd place, JEOPARDY! Million Dollar Masters.
Sean Ryan: First six-time champion.
Tom Walsh: First seven-time champion (also, record holder in regular
winnings -- $184,900 until Ken Jennings).

The winners of each of the Round Two games will keep their winnings, with a
minimum guarantee of $20,000, and move on to the next round. Non-winners
receive $10,000.

ROUND THREE
The 18 winners from Round Two will compete in one game each. Winners keep
their winnings, with a guarantee of $30,000, and move on to the Semi-Final
round. Non-winners receive $15,000.

SEMI-FINALS
Three of the six winners from Round Three compete in a two-day total point
match, with the combined total point winner becoming one Finalist. The
other three semi-finalists compete in another two-day total point match,
with the combined total point winner becoming the second Finalist. All
players in the Semi-Finals keep their two-day totals, with the two winners
of the round receiving a minimum guarantee of $50,000 each. The two
second-place finishers in each match receive a guarantee of $30,000;
third-place is guaranteed $20,000.

FINALS
The two surviving champions face-off with record-holder Ken Jennings in a
three day total point match to be broadcast May 23-25. $250,000 goes to
Third place; $500,000 for Second place; and a $2 Million dollar cash prize
will be awarded to the winner!
