[BVARC] Museum Ships Weekend Event - THIS weekend Fri.-Sun. May 31, June 1, 2

2024-05-27 Thread mark janzer via BVARC
From May 31 to June 2nd, the historic ships at Seawolf Park onPelican Island
in Galveston will come to life as part of an annualworldwide event
commemorating their service. This year, BVARC will behosting MSWE on the
destroyer escort, the USS Stewart, the submarineUSS Cavalla and the concrete
hulled WWI era SS Selma.

BVARC members will be operating and communicating with the 100+ otherhistoric
vessels in the United States and around the world. Due tothe unique situation
of Seawolf Park having the USS Stewart and USSCavalla at the same location, any
contact will provide an extraclaimed ship QSO contact (2 for 1). During MSWE,
the public may comeand visit the operators during the weekend observing the
contactsbeing made.

The schedule for the weekend will begin on Friday afternoon to Sunday
afternoon. Three operating positions are planned with SSB, CW and data modes
available. The schedule break down is:

The event begins June 1, z(UTC) to June 2nd 2359z(UTC) - Which for local
time on Pelican Island is 7pm Friday to 6:59pm Sunday.

Set-up 4pm to 7pm Friday

Operating time 7 pm Friday to 1pm Sunday (tentative)

Tear down 1 pm to 3 pm Sunday

Operators (and only scheduled operators) volunteering for the overnight shift
will be able to nap in the Stewart’s enlisted berthing area in the aft of the
ship. We have a 4 op head count limitation for each overnight.

The main meal Saturday evening (RSVP required) will be catered. Lunch Saturday
will be sandwiches (Subway) and breakfast tacos for Saturday and Sunday
mornings.

To sign-up for a shift(s), volunteer for set-up or tear down or just obtain
more information contact me, Mark Janzer, K5MGJ at k5...@yahoo.com. You must be
pre-registered on our list to participate. The list will be provided to the
entry gate for admittance.

The Brazos Valley Amateur Radio Club is grateful for the enthusiastic support
of the Cavalla Historical Foundation, Galveston Naval Museum and the Galveston
Park Board of Trustees for their permission to be aboard the vessels and the
use of the park facilities. We look forward to continued future activity and
expansion of BVARC’s involvement of MSWE. This involvement allows us, in our
own way, to honor those who served their country at sea and to support
Galveston Parks.

NOW a new topic to discuss. Banquet Speaker.
I feel that if you are going to have a speaker for the banquet that the speaker
should appeal to all.
If you were to have a speaker come in and talk only about ham radio that may
not be interesting enough for the non hams that are attending ( wives, dates,
non hams ) .
In the past at the banquet there have been some good speakers with neat
presentations . The one that sticks in my mind was Ron Litt's wife. She did a
presentation from the wife's point of view of HAM radio. BTW it was funny.
So in closing to  those that are putting together the banquet please consider a
speaker that will appeal to most of the attendees.

Re: [BVARC] Brews with BVARC this Tuesday!

2023-10-10 Thread mark janzer via BVARC
Sponsoring an event means that club funds are being used. That appears not to
be that case here and is a misleading statement. Each attendee is responsible
for their own tab. And each attendee is responsible for their behavior.
The club is sanctioning this event as a means of fellowship, and it so happens
it's at an adult venue (caveat emptor).
Other club sanctioned and sponsored events are inclusive of all members
(hamfest, POTA,  general meeting, VE testing, board meetings, etc.).
To settle this, add the disclaimer "This may be considered an adult event
(+21), as the venues serve alcoholic beverages".Let the adults figure out
whether they would want to attend or not. Let them determine if it offends
their sensibilities, not "you".
Respectfully submitted.MarkK5MGJ

issue to me is simply bvarcs sponsoring an adult only event.   all events,

Hi, all.

I'm a fairly new member of this club, having joined only a month or two ago. I
went to last month's Brew's with BVARC event as my first intro event to the
club. Seemed like a fun way to get to know some folks and have a good time.

And it was exactly that. I loved getting to hang with club members and the
offerings at the bar. I'm a bit confused from some of the correspondence here.
Has anything actually happened that was a problem at these events or is this a
lot of speculation about issues that *could* happen? I don't much patience for
the latter. If it's the former, it's fair to discuss how to address the issue.
If something happened that evening, it must have happened while I wasn't
looking or after I left.

I expect club members to be adults. I expect people to make their own
decisions. I also am quite aware that sometimes people have difficulties with
addiction and specific substances.

We're a very large club. That leaves room for diversity of events. It also
means we're more likely to have some members who aren't a good fit for events.
But if we actually come across a member we discover is behaving irresponsibly
at these get-togethers, I do expect those running them to intervene. Worrying
about whose legal responsibility it is comes as a secondary concern (though
still a concern!): I expect the event runners to address behavior problems and
let people who can't behave themselves know they aren't allowed back.

I'm telling everyone here as a new club member I found the event fun, I saw no
irresponsible behavior and I had a great time meeting people and putting some
faces to callsigns. I suggest anyone who doesn't like events at bars not come,
and if they have particular concern about a members welfare if they were to
attend, to let the event runner know about it. From there, we can judge actions.

If anyone had a specific incident at the event that they felt was handled
poorly and not addressed, I think that's important to bring up here. Otherwise
I'd suggest people live and let live.

Best,

-Fox, KW6FOX

[BVARC] Museum Ships Weekend Event - next weekend Fri.-Sun. June 2, 3, 4

2023-05-26 Thread mark janzer via BVARC

>From June 2nd to the 4th, the historic ships at Seawolf Park onPelican Island
>in Galveston will come to life as part of an annualworldwide event
>commemorating their service. This year, BVARC will behosting MSWE on the
>destroyer escort, the USS Stewart, the submarineUSS Cavalla and the concrete
>hulled WWI era SS Selma.

BVARC members will be operating and communicating with the 90+ otherhistoric
vessels in the United States and around the world.

The schedule for the weekend will begin on Friday afternoon to Sunday
afternoon. Three operating positions are planned with SSB and CW modes
available. The schedule break down is:

The event begins June 3rd z(UTC) to June 5th 2359z(UTC) - Which for local
time on Pelican Island is 7pm Friday to 6:59pm Sunday.

Set-up 4pm to 7pm Friday

Operating time 7 pm Friday to 1pm Sunday (tentative)

Tear down 1 pm to 3 pm Sunday

Operators (and only scheduled operators) volunteering for the overnight shift
will be able to nap in the Stewart’s enlisted berthing area in the aft of the
ship.

The main meal Saturday evening (RSVP required) will be as traditionally catered
by Leon's World Famous BBQ (unless there is a mutiny). Lunch Saturday will be
sandwiches (Subway) and breakfast tacos for Saturday and Sunday mornings.

To sign-up for a shift(s), bring equipment, volunteer for set-up or tear down
or just obtain more information contact me, Mark Janzer, K5MGJ at
k5...@yahoo.com  .

Eric and all else interested in our Discord,
The BVARC Discord is used for a few different things. First let me explain the
format. We have several different "Channels" which are essentially chatrooms
specialized to different topics. Some of those channels include: "General" for
general conversation among our members, "local-nets" for discussion or follow
up on our nets, "equipment-sales" for posting equipment for sale and to ask if
anyone has a particular item, "parks-on-the-air" for discussion about POTA and
about our monthly POTA events. Discord is generally accessed via the "Discord"
app, but can also be accessed via the Windows or Mac program available on their
website Discord.com, or directly in your computer browser.
To join our Discord "Server", first download the app from your app store.
Create an account (you can use our format "Name - Call Sign", or use any
username you want and just let me know when you first logon by posting a
message with your name and call sign and I will change it for our server so
everyone knows who you are. Once you have the app installed and an account
created, follow this link on your phone (or computer if you are logged in via
the PC or Mac program).
That link again is: https://discord.com/invite/kwVGeXM7UH
That's about it. I will see what I can do to get the word out. BVARC has lots
and lots of events coming up, so everyone stay tuned on all our platforms
(Facebook group, email reflector, and Discord). BVARC POTA on March 26th at
Galveston Island State Park is a big one coming up!

WOW!
I’m not the only one that gave that as a description!

It was hard work, both physically, and emotionally. A lot of passionate
planning  from many folks that really care for the last 6 months. There were
some veteran planners among us And a lot of new hams working with us  that had
never been to a hamfest at all.  This gave us a huge range of new ideas and
talent.

Some of us knew we could easily do a hamfest because we have done it 19 times
before, “lets just do what we have always done”,  but a few of us wanted to see
it grow and improve. A few of us were very concerned about the budget, ALL of
us knew  it would be taking a big chance expanding the budget to do a TWO DAY
SHOW.
Will anyone even come on a Friday?

Setup on Thursday was tough, but thanks to Mr. Washington and his Grandson for
setting up all the tables and chairs. We had a good amount of volunteers to
help on Thursday, mostly BVARC members, one notable volunteer who is not a
BVARC member who was there all three days ALL DAY is Chuck Hale – KF5UXP
(trying to talk him into joining the club) …

Ham Radio Outlet (HRO) came in for setup on Thursday with a huge retail
display, and they thrilled the Houston airwaves by checking into our Stir Crazy
Net as they drove to the hamfest. Wow, what a great retailer and supporter of
our hamfest.

Friday we were there early to allow more vendors to claim tables and start
setting up. (it was a sellout (plus))

It was busy for me, looking up tables and walking folks to the tables (lots of
walking) verifying they are no the right tables and happy..  thanks to Scott
McKee – NT5SM and a couple of others for helping me with the paperwork.

We had an onsite Paramedic for your safety, BVARC Member David Stevens – KI5LDZ
– He was also a big help with other volunteer duties when he was not saving
lives..

Opening to the public at 2PM, we had a couple of early gate crashers I had to
throw out. Yeah you know who you are…  ha ha

We were fully booked and the folks started streaming in, the crowd got huge..
Wow, on a Friday?  yes!..
At least as big or bigger than our past hamfests, as I was squeezing through
the isles at one point it suddenly hit me, WOW, this is Friday, and the big day
Saturday isn’t even here yet…wow

The show ran till 8pm,  a lot of folks were clearing out by 6:30-7ish, around
8pm Walter (K5WH) and a group of Balloon guys were the only ones left… Planning
for an 8pm close was probably too late..  Lesson learned for next years show.

Saturday morning at sunup the tailgaters were already swarming, and our doors
opened at 8AM..  A few VENDORS showed up for a table they should have claimed
already (Friday and Saturday)
It is a sell out! Where were you Friday? We counted you as a NO SHOW!
Sorry I sold your Tables to someone else!
NO REFUNDS…
I was just being mean to drive home the point that we are a two day show, we
need vendors here for two days!!
but of course I am not really mean,
I was prepared to set up some new tables and I did have a place for them ..
(being mean for minute was part of my plan)
Initial vendor reaction was RAGE (wanting to beat me up).. ha ha
When I told them I was joking, I do have a table for you!!
I think I actually made a few new friends out of this crazy plan.

The Doors opened and wow, another huge huge crowd of people, by noon even the
food vendor was overwhelmed with a line of maybe 50 folks(?) waiting on burgers
..
it was difficult to to even squeeze down the isles..

Thanks to many companies (list on the houstonhamfest.org website) we had NINTY
SIX, count em, NINTY SIX donated door prizes PLUS three MAJOR RAFFLE  prizes (I
heard between $7000 and $8000 total) ..  With that many prizes to try to give
away, we almost didn’t have enough time (in two days!!).
What in the past had been a prize an hour, or a prize every half hour, BUT this
year it become our announcer’s main job  we had constant door prizes..

After recently traveling a couple hundred miles to a hamfest ( I won’t mention
which one) I was disappointed to find out they BAN ALL DOGS except service
dogs.. I brought my two Boxers and my wife stayed in outside with the dogs
while I walked through the show in 20 minutes)
As a joke – (sortof) In some of our early hamfest website blurbs, and on at
least one of our marketing hamfest emails, I mentioned

the isles at one point it suddenly hit me, WOW, this is Friday, and the big day
Saturday isn’t even here yet…wow

As a joke – (sortof) In some of our early hamfest website blurbs, and on at
least one of our marketing hamfest emails, I mentioned ALL DOGS ARE WELCOME,
just bring your human…
It worked I think over both days we had more then 10 folks with dogs.. I meant
to buy some treats but forgive me, next year I will be more prepared.

Subject: [BVARC] its official. Yes I can now say with certainty that all
antenna science is actually just VooDoo.after reading 100s of pages on an equal
number of antenna configurations I have determined that the only common
denominator is that antennas must be made from metal. and someone will let me
know that is also not so.   to sum up my research you must have a 1/4, 1/2,
5/8, 3/8, 3/4 full wavelength section at some angle to something else that is
larger or smaller than the original  it must be between touching the earth or
200ft high whichever you like more.  it should be horizontal or vertical or an
angle in-between.  can be made from wire or tubing of copper or aluminum but do
not rule out magnesium.  it must be an open or closed circuit it definitely
should or should not be resonate, SWR is bad, but a little is ok.   dont forget
to trim your antenna until you have trimmed too much then add some back and
trim some more. A balun unun unbalunousbulbulous, is absolutely maybe required
but dont use one, they are rings of mystery metal called ferite, because they
may be ferous and may be magic, they should be wound clockwise or counter
clockwise or both and may have 2 but can have as many as six wires in a
mystical configuration that can not be shown in 2 dimensions. did i mention the
magic ladder wire or 75-400 or more ohm coax with or without loops to make
something called ohms all nice and matchy matchy. (oof course you dont need
this either because radios do this for you.)
so there you have it,  all you need to know to get out there and make a perfect
antenna.

The club does have some equipment that has been donated to it. What about
finding an RF quiet location and setting up a remotely operated online HF
station? It could run Digi/CW/SSB. With an equitable reservations program for

We can install a blog on the website if there is enough interest..

We currently have facebook, its kinda like a blog and fairly active..

What kind of threat are you talking about??

Im not sure if you are talking about the reflector or not... Every once in a
while

when it gets real busy or a hot topic pops up,  then a lot of emails come
pretty

quickly.. Once in a while someone complains that the reflector is filling up
their inbox.

>From the reflector point of view it is nice to see it very active...

solution or advice: Every email the reflector sends out has "[BVARC]"

in the title... almost ANY email client can be set up to filter the [BVARC]

and drop it in a BVARC folder in your mail programthen it does not clog

your inbox or interfere with your normal emails and you can go read the

BVARC folder at your leisure..

OR

You can set the reflector to send you the reflector emails in digest mode...

one big email instead of a bunch of individuals..

Hope this helps

If anyone is interested in a couple free runs of used 1/2" hardline, I'd be
happy to pass them on to another ham. One run is about 50-75' and the other is
a little over 100'. I can bring them along to FD this weekend or we can arrange
a time to pick them up.

I also have a used G5RV antenna in decent shape that I'd like to pass along to

Yes, we're always on the lookout for VEs to help out. Personnel schedules and
availability varies quite a bit and sometimes it's tricky to drum up three VEs
to proctor a session.
This Saturday we'll be transitioning to in-person computer based testing, which
makes the process easier for the VEs and pretty much eliminates the voluminous
paperwork required. Some of our VEs are also certified for remote online
testing, for those clubs and VECs (like Anchorage) that offer it.
You'd be welcome (along with any others interested) and we'd appreciate your

enables a staff member to be present while we're aboard.
Overnight berthing requires a fee of $25 per person (Museum policy). If you are
on board for overnight radio ops, the berthing fee will apply.
You do not need to pay a berthing fee to attend, as long as you're not staying
overnight.
We arrive Friday afternoon, set-up in the galley and the Stewart radio room.We
clean-up and vacate the galley area by 2pm on Saturday.
To participate - respond to this email with your plans to attend.I'll then be
able to add you to the list of participants for "free" entry into the park.

On the other hand, it might be dark enough.  If it is a lot closer (for me,

The Texas Emergency Preparation Supplies Sales Tax Holiday will occur

from Saturday, April 23, 2022 at 12:01 am, CDT, to midnight, Monday,

April 25, 2022.

The list of supplies and items that qualify appear on the Texas

Comptroller's website at:

Unfortunately, the tax holiday does not provide exemption from

sales tax on the purchase of radios in excess of $75 in value. Perhaps

we can persuade a Texas legislator to sponsor an amendment to the law

that would extend the tax exemption to permit the exclusion of sales tax

on a broader class of amateur radios and related equipment.

If you have been planning to purchase a small generator, note the

sales tax exclusion does apply to portable generators that cost less

than $3,000.00, permitting — depending on brand and where purchased

Well, my CC are not vague - they say explicitly no antennas unless we're
required to allow the antenna by law.  Having said that, I already have an
antenna for HF.  There will be one for VHF and UHF.  The question is about how
to build it...

I think I've settled on doing the tetherball base.  Now I just need to figure
out if it will be a push up mast, a crank up mast, a tilt over mast, or some
combination, and I need to figure out what to make it out of...  Lighter is
better, I think, as it'll be less likely to cause damage should it ever blow
over (or get knocked over).  I may put this thing between my house and the
neighbor's house, and I don't want it breaking stuff.  I was looking at carbon
fiber telescoping masts last night, and that may be a good option.  They're
pricey, which I'm not thrilled about, but they are supposedly stronger/stiffer
than aluminum.

If you attend any area Hamfest with an ARRL forum, John Stratton N5AUS (ARRL

for putting up an antenna.  He can feed you ammunition if there is an issue
with your HOA.

My HOA has a vague statement about antennas 10 ft higher than the highest point
on my house.  With that in mind and a "it's better to ask forgiveness than
permission " attitude, for the past 20 years I have had antennas up to 20 ft in
height attached yp my chimney.   This past year I got tired of dealing with my
extension ladder and put four sections of Motorola/ Rohn 35 in the ground about
6 feet.  So that's about 34 feet above ground.  I recently came across a good
deal on a Hygain TH-3JRS and I also have a 4 element 2 meter beam side mounted.

I have never received a complaint... except for grass growing in the sidewalk
cracks.

I also converted my 10 meter 5/8 wave Siro

2022-03-31 Thread mark janzer via BVARC
 FYI 73MarkK5mgj

Important Message Update from ARRL VEC
March 31, 2022

New FCC Application Fee Will Not Apply To Amateur Radio License Upgrades

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) staff has clarified in response to
an ARRL request that the new $35 application fee will not apply to most license
modifications, including those to upgrade a licensee’s operator class and
changes to club station trustees. The FCC staff explained that the new fees
will apply only to applications for a new license, renewal, rule waiver, or a
new vanity call sign. As previously announced, the new fees take effect on
April 19, 2022.

“We are pleased that the FCC will not charge licensees the FCC application fee
for license upgrade applications,” said ARRL Volunteer Examiner Coordinator
(VEC) Manager, Maria Somma, AB1FM. “While applicants for a new license will
need to pay the $35 FCC application fee, there will be no FCC charge for future
upgrades and administrative updates such as a change of mailing or email
address. Most current licensees therefore will not be charged the new FCC
application fee until they renew their license or apply for a new vanity call
sign.”

ARRL previously reported that the new $35 application fee for Amateur Radio
licenses will become effective on April 19, 2022.

Further information and instructions about the FCC application fee will follow
as it’s being released.

FCC $35 Amateur Application Fee Effective Date Will Be April 19, 2022

The FCC released a Public Notice on March 23, 2022, stating that the amateur
radio application fees, including those associated with Form 605 application
filings, would becomeeffective on April 19, 2022. The Federal Communications
Commission's authority to impose and collect fees is mandated by Congress.

UPDATED INFORMATION: The $35 application fee, when it becomes effective on
April 19, will apply to new, renewal, and modification applications that
request a new vanity call sign. The fee will be per application processed by
the FCC. If the applicant fails to pay within the 10-day window, the
application will be dismissed by the FCC. The application will have to be
refiled with the FCC which will restart the 10-day window. For examinees, an
application can be refiled to the FCC, by the coordinating VEC, at any time
before the CSCE expires.

UPDATED INFORMATION:  Administrative updates, such as a change of name, mailing
or email address, and modification applications toupgrade an amateur radio
licensee’s operator class*, will be exempt from fees. (*this new information
was just confirmed by FCC staff on Tuesday March 29.)

[BVARC] Testing fees to increase - Incentives for youth licensing

2022-03-25 Thread mark janzer via BVARC
Please refer to the link on the ARRL site for more details:
http://www.arrl.org/news/new-amateur-radio-license-applications-fee-to-become-effective-april-19-2022

The last scheduled BVARC test session date, before the increase, is April 9th.
Note that VE sessions do not collect the added $35.
There is also a youth program (18 and under) to defray the initial licensing
costs to $5 (deducting the $35 increase and $10 off the VE session). The ARRL
program has not yet been implemented, so VE sessions aren't equipped to handle
these youth price reductions.
Also, BVARC is about to implement it's own program for youth licensing,
starting at the May 7th session. We'll provide a new VHF/UHF transceiver
(Baofeng, limited supply) at the VE session, to youth that successfully pass
their Technician test. This is the result of a very generous grant from a BVARC
member (THANKS!)

Feel free to forward this to others.
As noted, the $35 increase will be in early 2022, to give time for the FCC to
gear the ULS web site to collect the fee.

Thanks Mr. Bonica.
The MSWE task force has openings, and always has. BTW, W1XQ's successful use of
a Buddistick at MSWE in 2018, influenced subsequent Museum Ship activation
antenna strategies.

To all,I hate to get tangled in this web, but I have to say this...
I have been on an off with BVARC for over 10 years at different levels. I
want to say I have NEVER felt like I was put off or out. As a matter of fact, I
feel the opposite. As I back out of doing one thing/ interest, BVARC members
have always pulled me back in and welcomed me. Everyone present and even some
of our silent keys have welcomed me.
This is why I am even bringing my son into the club. We need new blood in
the club and everyone welcomed him during Field Day. Thanks to Jimmy
especially, he has grown an interest in this hobby/ field. He has even started
this week to check in to the net on his own before I even get there. He also
relayed that I was in the area and made sure I was checked in.  As for my
wanting to help because of members, during Field Day, I was more than happy to
be there all three days and make sure I did my part as I feel everyone in the
club tries to do what they can. No one intentionally is rude, we all have a
part and sometimes we get wrapped up in what we feel is important. This is a
fact of life and we need to accept others for who they are and for the little
bumps in the road they may cause unintentionally. We are not perfect and
everyone is different, let's accept that and integrate that into our team
functions.
I did see a few people talk about cliques - I do not feel there are
cliques, it is just people more engrossed with the club and are working towards
a goal. If you feel there is a clique, go talk to them, maybe that clique has a
place for you and you will see that it is not a clique but a task force that
might need your help too.
But most of all, let's keep the spirit of Ham Radio up, and help each
other.  My son was new and everyone he dealt with helped him and we now have
one more member that will carry on our legacy. We should not only look at the
way we function as a club, but how we function with the public side too. I was
once told by Val Rose (Silent Key), that I should get my licence, join BVARC,
and serve the community. I hope I am doing that and Robert Tarbet (Who I got my
equipment from) used to serve the community as a Ham, ES, and Chaplin. I hope
that I am doing what both those silent keys wanted.
Now -- I pose a question to you all   ---   Do you think what YOU are doing is
what our past Silent Keys wanted??? Because that is what BVARC's Silent Keys
gave us. A place to help those who can not help themselves, internally and
externally.

[BVARC] July Adventure Radio Sprint - W5ACM (SK)

2021-07-12 Thread mark janzer via BVARC
I didn't see this until this morning:

The July 2021 Spartan Sprint is being held in memory of ARS's great friend,
Andy Mac Allister, W5ACM (SK) who died May 19. He was a longtime supporter
of the Adventure Radio Society and a superb QRP'er and CW operator. Andy
was frequently top scorer in the Skinny division of the contest.

Myron Schaffer, WVØH, suggested this Sprint dedication - a wonderful idea,
indeed. For this month, all Sprinters are urged to use the letters ACM in
place of RST. "UR ACM is 589," for example. With Andy's call sign suffix
being flashed across North America tonight, Monday evening, July 5, we will
tip our hat to him for an amateur radio career so well done.

For full details on ARS's Spartan Sprints, visit the ARS website at:
http://www.ARSqrp.blogspot.com .
Sprint rules are at the top of the page.

TNX in advance for your ongoing support, and happy long July 4th weekend.

[BVARC] NO GO - Re: Museum Ships Weekend Event - 2021

2021-06-03 Thread mark janzer via BVARC
We've made a no-go decision based on the weather and the resulting disrupting
QRN.
We're planning on going out later in the summer to work on the Cavalla antenna
as well as activate the radio room on both boats for the public to see.
Stay safe through this wet weekend.
I'll be back in touch in a few weeks to plan a work day.

As some of you may have seen, the annual Museum Ships Weekend (MSWE) is June
4th to the 6th.
The historic ships at Seawolf Park on Pelican Island in Galveston will come to
life as part of an annual worldwide event commemorating their service. This
year, BVARC will be hosting MSWE in the radio room of the destroyer escort, the
USS Stewart.
BVARC members as well as visiting amateur radio operators (all pre-registered
w/BVARC) will be on the air from the Stewart and communicating with the 70+
other historic vessels in the United States and around the world. Due to the
unique situation of Seawolf Park having the USS Cavalla at the same location,
any contact will provide an extra claimed ship QSO contact. We'll also have a
2nd station for the SS Selma (a WW1, concrete hulled merchant class tanker).
During MSWE, the public (fee to enter museum required) may come and visit the
operators during the weekend, observing the contacts being made. The schedule
for the weekend will begin on Friday afternoon and end early Sunday afternoon.
Two operating positions are planned with SSB and CW modes available. PSK may be
also be used during the weekend if enough operators are available. The schedule
break down is:
Per the MSWE site: The event begins June 5th z(UTC) to June 6th 2359z(UTC)
- Which for local time on Pelican Island is 7pm Friday to 6:59pm Sunday. Set-up
5 pm Friday (Set-up may take longer but hopefully a station will be operating
by 7 pm)Operating time 7pm Saturday to 1pm Sunday (depending on conditions)Tear
down 1 pm to 3 pm Sunday Operators (and only scheduled
operators) volunteering for the overnight shift will be able to stay within the
museum grounds after public hours.
Tentatively the 2m talk-in frequency will be 146.940, minus offset, 167.9 tone.
The main meal Saturday evening will be as traditionally catered by Leon's World
Famous BBQ (unless there is a crew mutiny demanding otherwise).
To sign-up for a shift(s), bring equipment, volunteer for set-up or tear down
or just obtain more information contact me, Mark Janzer, K5MGJ at
k5...@yahoo.com. I'll be sending out an organizational email shortly to those
that have already signed up, and those that respond to this email (off list
please). The Brazos Valley Amateur Radio Club is grateful for the enthusiastic
support of the Cavalla Historical Foundation, Galveston Naval Museum and the
Galveston Park Board of Trustees for their permission to be aboard the vessels
and the use of the park facilities. We look forward to continued future
activity and expansion of BVARC’s involvement of MSWE. This involvement allows
us, in our own way, to honor those who served their country at sea and to
support Galveston Parks.

SUNDAY – Kids Run the BASES after the game. VERY popular with families

a good 80/160-meter dipole with the help of my former father-in-law WF5W

trees and it was fantastic!  Had a storm come in while I was doing some early

thunderclap!        Lightning struck the east pine tree of the antenna span!
The Lightening did a good job of removing the tree's bark it then jumped over
the nylon rope and destroyed the ceramic insulator, vaporized 3 feet of the
antenna copper, and destroyed the home-made coil ( I think I have the burned
coil still, Looking).        The main strike was on the Pine tree, but a feeder
strike found my phone line and house ground at the same time.        Lost the
following!         One great antenna and its mounting point!    All land line
phones and an answering machine!    One brand knew refrigerator!        MY Ten

Subject: Re: [BVARC] Lightning Strike Prevention     Keith, Did you also
lose your TV's and other electronics?  Did you lose any transceivers not
connected to your mains?  The fact is that a lightning strike on or very near
your house is going to impress current on any antenna system, or analogue
thereof, in the near field, and the amount of energy carried by that antenna
system is directly proportional to wire length to that antenna or antenna
analogue.  The largest antenna analogue in our houses is the wiring system of
the house itself, and a residential ground, while being a good short path, is
not usually very efficient compared to the ground system of a commercial
building or a broadcast tower.  That being said, the odds of taking such a hit
are small by ground area and reduced exponentially by the relative heights of
the surroundings.  The object lesson being that if you have the highest thing
in large square footage connected electrically to your equipment, you are
increasing your odds of a strike significantly.  Unfortunately, the best thing
for getting a great signal on radio is the worst thing to do for protecting
yourself from lightning strikes, which makes perfect sense if you realize that
we are in the hobby of taking a small powered sine wave electrical signal from
the atmosphere and responding to it using a slightly higher powered electrical
sine wave :-)  The folks of us that do that most efficiently are the most
likely to be the victims of the fact that the system is, by definition, very
good at attracting a tens billion times higher potential static DC capacitive
discharge.       Ron KE4DRF

The worst damage was in May, 2019, when a large bolt struck my 150 foot tower.

I’m currently coordinating with the Ships, on BVARCs participation for this
years event. If members are interested, let me know as there will be limited
space and likely no overnighting on the ships. Camping (sleeping in vehicles)
in Seawolf park is not permitted.

Good evening All,

The upcoming workday for 13 Feb is still on.  The weather will not likely be
conducive to painting.  (Needs to be above 55 F)

However, there is still plenty to do, please see the general project list below.

Given the amount of interior work we will be doing, can I please get a
headcount if you plan to attend?

I will send the final duty roster and schedule Thursday evening.

Thank you and look forward to seeing you aboard.

emails were for club members ONLY. Apparently this email list is posted to the
public and I'm concerned about that. I have personal information in my
signature (name, phone number etc. which may be used to send me spam calls)
that could easily be parsed by an algorithm... This seems like a major security
issue to me and should be fixed. I have to wonder who is sending these emails
to this website??? If the club is doing this they should inform us that
anything we say on this list is not a private email but a public statement to
all of the internet and everyone on the planet.
I would appreciate some feedback on this and how this email I sent to the club
was posted publicly on the internet for all the world to see Maybe this is
the intent of the club, but I will certainly think twice about sending anything
out now and censoring my email signature. This must be laid out clearly to all
new members.

After more than 50 years of ham radio, and due to my penchant for buying way
more than I usually need, I have amassed quite a collection of excess parts,
tools and materials around here. I would like to take this opportunity to give
back to the ham radio community. Much of the materials are free for the asking,
however some of the more valuable items I would like to actually sell, but I
promise it will be for a good price. While I am not going to make a detailed
list of what I have here, if you send me a direct note off of the reflector(s)
with what you want or need I will respond with “come pick it up for free” or
with a cost. I can also ship USPS if you pay the shipping costs. If it is
small, I can stick it in a padded mailer for just a few dollars.

Initially I will give preference to new hams, especially those just getting
started or those getting back into radio after an extended absence. Need
something if particular?...just send me a note, I might have it. What I have
here includes:

   - Wire (various sizes, colors, etc.)
   - Cable (coax, coax jumpers. shielded cable, etc.)
   - Adapters of all sorts including RF, audio, etc.
   - Tools (Soldering Irons, hand tools, meters, etc.)
   - Antenna hardware and materials including aluminum tubing, insulators, SS
hose clamps, 316SS hardware, heavy duty cast aluminum saddles, guy wire, coax
seal, etc.
   - Parts (Ferrites, toroids, etc.)
   - Some equipment

No, I’m not getting out of radio or anything like that! I just have way more
than I need or will ever be able to use and want to help fellow hams who are
looking for particular things. This is my way of giving back to the hobby. Just
send me a note.

My email system screens new email addresses, so many of you may initially land
in my spam folder. I will check it on a daily basis. Please no phone calls or

The Community Center maintains a limited headcount, depending on the room we’re
in, typically 16. It’ll be helpful for us to monitor this requirement by please
sending me a note (offlist) that you’re planning to attend the “Programming
HT’s” session this Saturday. If inviting others, (say through the Stir Crazy
Net, etc.) please ask that they send me a note, so I can tally a headcount.

Thanks!!
