Faster rates means wider transmission bandwidths, which means less room for
others on our HF bands.

Alan, all,
please send to all your clubs so they know what to look for (Alan? This will
only go to you and ctdxcc). Listen to the entire video-- see what happens to
the pactor signal 2 or 3 minutes into the video!
Five transmitters surely will not cause the sky to fall.
But 50 or 500 or 5000 stations could do immense damage across many bands since
each signal is at 2.4 kHz or 5 kHz channel bandwidth. Imagine our cw and
narrowband spectrum sounding like this (especially 2 minutes into the
video)https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=zzrjQsq4FpE

We must do all we can to ensure this "temporary" order is only temporary- 60
daysand let's hope it does some actual good for those suffering in the

Let us all beware of those at the league who have data ambitions that aim to

FCC Grants Temporary Waiver to Permit Higher Symbol Rate Data Transmissions

The FCC has granted an ARRL request to waive current Amateur Radio rules to
permit data transmissions at a higher symbol rate than currently permitted, in
order to facilitate hurricane relief communications between the continental US
and Puerto Rico. The temporary waiver is limited to Amateur Radio operators in
Puerto Rico using PACTOR 3 and PACTOR 4 emissions, and to those radio amateurs

Furthermore, this was extensively addressed when ARRL proposed it less than a
year ago. Even hard core narrow bandwidth people don’t want to stifle
technology, so the counter proposal was to give wideband part of the SSB
sections or equal amounts from upper CW/Data and SSB. Of course ARRL, the
people who brought you the disastrous Parity Act would have nothing to do with
this.

Oh boy, noobs in a minefield.

The reality is that Amateur Radio has become largely an idle pursuit of
comfortable geriatric men. I take no joy in noting that, I’m only acknowledging
the situation. At 61, I’m no spring chicken myself. One thing about the
geriatric that’s notable is our almost monumental resistance to change. There
are plenty in this “hobby” who are always remembering “the good ol’ days.” I am
among a minority who are unhappy that Amateur Radio has lost so much relevance
with public service agencies. That was a major justification in getting
Congressional authorization for what was meant to be a service. I am old enough
to remember, as a SWL, the heydays of the ‘70s when certain HF frequencies were
virtually aglow during disasters, and I don’t just mean “health and welfare”
traffic. That was the epitome of relevancy to me, and I aspired to that level
of service.

I’m wistful that hams still aren’t doing things like spread-spectrum
communications, which the military has had for decades. The crux of objections
to new modes stems from worries that the sacred traditional modes would be
hampered or interfered with. Personally, I have nothing against CW, but AM on
HF is a waste of bandwidth (and for those curious, I feel much the same about
“ESSB;” a properly-adjusted 3kc signal should provide sufficient fidelity). I
don’t have a lot of interest in the “JT” modes as those are only useful in
contests. FSQ might have a broader appeal, although I’ve yet to make a contact
using it.

I am on record in this mailing list as saying it’s only a question of time
before the FCC is presented with a more profitable or “beneficial” use of our
spectrum. At that point, we will be called upon to justify what we have, and
the fact that there are 748k of us means diddly because we don’t vote en bloc
on anything.

Faster means wider band with. Where will it be taken from? SSB/ CW / DIGITAL,
of which none wan't to give up any spectrum. That is the issue.

Equal parts I might go for.

However, have you ever heard a real spread-spectrum signal? No, and you won’t
because they lurk in the background noise. Military does this frequently on
80m, and you almost need a SDR to spot the noise floor going up ever so
slightly.

Furthermore, this was extensively addressed when ARRL proposed it less than a
year ago. Even hard core narrow bandwidth people don’t want to stifle
technology, so the counter proposal was to give wideband part of the SSB
sections or equal amounts from upper CW/Data and SSB. Of course ARRL, the
people who brought you the disastrous Parity Act would have nothing to do with
this.

Subject: N5MT Tower work Sat Oct 7th
Guys
Plans have changed slightly for Sat considering the possibility of rain in the
morning, which will stop the tower work.  SO the crane has been cancelled BUT
we will be climbing the tower if it is NOT raining.
My tower climber Mark will try to get one or the second antenna down so that
work will not delay us when we get the crane here in a future sat...
SO please come if you had plans or Oct 7th.
The 10 mtr on top will come down easily.
The  20 mtr will be harder and heavier so we will need several of us, not just
a few.

So thanks.  I will send out an update as necessary for the final takedown and
update abt tomorrow.

shipping five PACTOR radio modems to Puerto Rico for use in connection with
Hurricane Maria disaster relief communications. The League asked the FCC to
temporarily allow PACTOR 3 and PACTOR 4 transmissions that exceed the current

the exception of 60 meters, and 1200 baud in the 10 meter band. The baud rate
limits were adopted in 1980, when the FCC amended Part 97 to specify ASCII as a
permissible digital code.
