Below is my attempt at a Groundhog day dance. The groundhog starts his

 Groundhog Daze Becket
 A1 Gypsy your shadow

 A2 Circle left 3 places
Balance the circle, 1's make an arch, 2's dive thru
B1 Next neighbor balance and swing
B2 Long lines forward and back

Re: [Callers] Groundhog Day dance by Jim Hemphill

2012-01-18 Thread tavi merrill
I have called it twice thus far; both times the dancers enjoyed the dance -
and the joke implicit in its choreography.
Both times i used it in mixed-level situations, without problems, calling
it as written. IMO it's a really good dance for introducing the "shadow"
concept to inexperienced dancers because it's grounded in partner
interaction - you simply turn your back on your partner and there s/he is!
Also having a simple, straightforward progression mid-dance is to my mind a
strength, because it adds variety to a program without introducing the
higher complexity typical of mid-dance progressions.

2011-12-28 Thread Bill Baritompa

Hi Jim,

I like your dance. I've not seen it before (but I don't have that large
a collection). B2b is a nice replacement for LC as it makes a nicer
transition to A1. For my dance here, with lots of older dancers who get
a bit dizzy, I would be careful with it, as it has 24 consecutive beats
clockwise
in the beginning. Did you realize your dance is a double progression?

Cheers, Bill

Thanks, Jack! I thought I had a distant memory of that pass through
being up and down the setan old dance card now consigned to a
different dance collection. But I also remember the dance as being a
lot of fun with the pass through up and down.a real surprise
ending. I am sure that Dan Pearl will appreciate that some of us are
so interested in the dance.

For me the most interesting Groundhog Day dance I went to was when the
caller (James Hutson) didn't call attention to the fact that just
about every dance had a shadow in it till we hit the one that didn't.
(Exceptions were two squares with heavy right-hand-lady/left-hand gent
interactions, and Punxsutawney Promenade, which he claimed was
mandated "by law.") I don't remember the details, but the first three
dances were:

Another Nice Combination
Trip to Troy (maybe)
The Ritz

(He did have non-shadow alternates in case of an newer crowd, but
that's not what happened that night.)

Re: [Callers] Groundhog day

2011-12-28 Thread Jack Mitchell
Actually, there are two versions of P. Promenade, both by Dan Perl. The
version linda posted had the two mixed up a bit. The first (and
original, and still the one I call) has the B2:

*B2*Circle Left 3/4
Pass Thruup and down
Turn back
same Neighbors LHS 1/2
to NEW Neighbors

//
Then Dan changed it to

Circle Left 1x
Pass Thru across
Turn Alone
same Neighbors LHS 3/4
to NEW Neighbors

He changed it to tighten up the timing a bit. At the same time, though,
it lost the "fake progression" of the pass thru (you think to new N)
then turn back and star with your same neighbors to actually get to your
new neighbors.

It's a great dance!

Enjoy

Hi Linda,

Thanks for Punxsutawney Promenade. I was puzzled with B2, but checked
other versions and realized B2 should have the pass thru be across the set.

Hi Linda,

Would you please clarify the instructions for the dance below? I believe that
partners are doing the dip/dive with a shadow, but they are traveling in the
same direction up or down the set, so it is not clear to me how they find each
other again; nor how it is that they are next to each other to start the hey.

Here are snap shots of the dance which will help as you read my comments
below.

You are right that the dip/dive is done with a shadow. A man's partner will
be in the couple behind him as they dip and dive. After the Neighbor swing, in
lines
facing everyone is opposite their shadow. From the man's point of view to the
right of his

shadow is the other man in the minor set who swung her, and to the right of him
(in
the next minor set) is his partner. The start of B2 (i.e. Gents AL 1/2
which really becomes a Left pull by), puts the Gents facing out with their
shadow on the left and partner on right - the 1/2 hey brings everyone to their
correct
side the passing right shoulder on the outside flows nicely in the partner swing
which

normalizes and finishes the progression.

Thanks for your interest, and any comments on how you think it will go will
be
appreciated. I think the transitions flow nicely, and I wanted to capture the
essence

of Luke's query. The ground hogs tunnel with their shadows and pop out to visit
a
neighbor and retreat back to partners. Unfortunately we don't have any ground
hogs
here in NZ.

Cheers, Bill

Becket (cw)

A1: LC; LC on left diagonal
A2: Circle Left 3/4 (8); Dip and Dive 2x (4+4)
(note everyone with a shadow, those facing down start diving under
arch made by those facing up)
B1: N Bal & Swing
B2: Gents AL 1/2; 1/2 Hey across (L start L sh); Partner Swing

On a different note: Dan Pearl has written a fine dance specifically
for the occasion:

Punxsutawney Promenade
by Dan Pearl
Contra/Improper/Int

A1 Neighbors balance and swing
A2 Promenade 3/4 (end facing up or down, looking at partner)
  Partners dosido
B1 Partners balance and swing
B2 Circle left once
Pass through up & down and turn alone
(with same neighbors) Left-hand star 3/4

Cheers! Linda

How about this? The ground hogs dip and dive with their shadow, say
hello

to a neighbor, and find their partners again.

note: the 1/2 hey across is unusual as partners are on the 'wrong'
side of each other
those who come off must participate where they can. i.e.
A1b, A2b

contemplating a double-length (128 bar) dance where you meet your
shadow

only every other time...

4x4's like First Bloom by Al Olson have a corner swing which
alternates

between neighbors and a trail buddy.
