RE: [cayugabirds-l] Birds/eclipse

2024-04-09 Thread Eveline V. Ferretti
I'll go ahead and report a fairly astonishing (to me at least!) occurrence that
came with the eclipse as witnessed on the shores of Lake Ontario (Southwick
Beach State Park), where the clouds graciously opened just in time and just in
time to show the sun at totality at 3:21 p.m. Some seconds past totality -
around 45 - 60 seconds or so (though I have to admit being a bit fuzzy on that
timing), came a roar, and I do mean roar, of sea gulls as they up and flew
above us, coming from the SW. It was pretty amazing.

Early in the darkening before the eclipse proper, I saw a changing of roosting
duties by the Mourning Dove pair nesting in a hanging flower pot on my back
porch. I'm pretty sure it was mom who demanded the reluctant dad to leave his
nap so she could take over. She regurgitated some food for the chicks and then
settled down for her nap. Unfortunately I didn't see if they changed again when
the world became brighter again.

The evening _before_ the eclipse the skies were quite clear. I went up to the
top of my hill in West Danby with a couple of my neighbors, and we enjoyed
viewing Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks through binoculars and spotting scope for the
better part of an hour.

Of course the day of the eclipse was cloudy. My daughter in Ithaca got a nice
photo of the partly eclipsed sun through a brief hole in the cloud cover. No
such luck in West Danby. At the darkest point, my feeder birds briefly
disappeared. But the Raven female across the road began begging very loudly and
insistently. I saw her partner head off toward the valley in the gloom,
presumably to find something for her. My chickens did not bother going to roost.

[cayugabirds-l] Eastern Bluebirds around Mount Pleasant

2024-01-19 Thread Eveline V. Ferretti
Hello friends,

In my frequent walks around the Mount Pleasant fields, I’ve noticed a number of
Eastern Bluebirds there over the past few weeks. I’m used to seeing/hearing
them in spring/summer/early fall. Not so much over winter. The distribution
map at All About Birds
suggests that this area is part of their breeding season stomping grounds, and
shows only downstate as part of their year-round area. Are the bluebirds
starting to overwinter here with us now too? Or are these just late leavers, so
to speak (and if the former, I guess that makes me wonder when new
distribution maps will end up getting compiled, though I realize the
erraticness (spelling? Is that even a word?) of global warming’s effects may be
making the creation of reliable new maps/databases a bit difficult).

Wondering,

Eveline

[cayugabirds-l] Northern harrier on Mt. Pleasant/Mineah fields

2023-05-10 Thread Eveline V. Ferretti
While walking our dog this morning, we observed two Northern Harriers in the
Mt. Pleasant/Mineah fields—one the field by the Mt. Pleasant/Mineah
intersection, the other on the field further down the abandoned part of Mineah
road. I unfortunately couldn’t tell if male or female, but as I know we’ve
observed a male + female in that area a couple of years ago, I do wonder
whether a pair of harriers might not be breeding in the area.

A hopeful thought in any case.

[cayugabirds-l] sandhill cranes & more at MNWR

2023-03-26 Thread Eveline V. Ferretti
Numbers weren't high in the windy weather at MNWR today, but some nice sights
anyway!

2 Sandhill Cranes at the pond by the visitor center this AM, along with a
number of Northern Pintails, Green-winged Teals, and at least one American
Black Duck x Mallard. Plus of course some watchful Canadian geese.

A small flock of Sandhill Cranes landed in the water along the shore below the
drive up at the Marsellus-Knox marsh just as we got there, and stayed for a
good while (a small group of dabblers also there among a few Canadian geese,
but the angle of the bright spring sun had them silhouetted, preventing a good
look to say what kind).

Then, in the Savannah marsh, a pair of Trumpeter swans landed, also just as we
got there, for a languid bit of preening in the sun. In the water beyond, a
little too far for us to be able to say for sure, a pair of American Wigeons
(we think) shared some late morning peace and quiet, windy weather
notwithstanding.

All in all, a lovely early spring morning in the Finger Lakes.

Then at the field next to the compost piles, another Killdeer.

I finally went to Mount Pleasant in the hope that the warm south wind would

Re:[cayugabirds-l] American Kestrel lineup!

2021-09-19 Thread Eveline V. Ferretti
Delayed follow up to Marie’s post below—a week or so ago, on that dirt road off
of Mt. Pleasant, my husband and I were fortunate enough to see a female harrier
do her low-glide-over-the-field thing (so close, it felt like I could have
touched her!). We watched for a few minutes, then were further mesmerized as 2
kestrels swooped in and begin harassing the harrier. She tolerated it for a few
minutes, then decided to ditch the annoyance swooping up and away northward,
to, I imagine, a less contested field. A fascinated show.

Quite a few kestrels still around on Mount Pleasant today. And yes, many
monarchs. Hard not to feel lighter of heart taking all that in.

Hi Cayugabirders,
The annual build-up of American Kestrels on Mt Pleasant is happening! Location
is the dirt road (recently graded and improved) tht heads north from Mt
Pleasant Rd to the tall communication towers. I counted 11 kestrels, 9 of which
were lined up along one span of wire! They're mostly feasting on the crickets
and grasshoppers that emerge from the fields.

Enjoy!

[cayugabirds-l] Fall Creek common mergansers

2021-04-26 Thread Eveline V. Ferretti
I’d never had the good fortune of watching common mergansers (a male-female
pair) shooting rapids before—until a morning walk along Fall Creek on the
Monkey Run Trail yesterday (Sunday; just a little ways upstream from the iron
pilings of that never-finished bridge). Can’t say I didn’t rather yearn to join
in that fun.

[cayugabirds-l] Kingfishers at Fall Creek

2021-04-16 Thread Eveline V. Ferretti
Walking a dog on the Monkey Run trail along Fall Creek (below the SPCA; at a
bend in the creek where there are bluffs on the other side), I saw at least 4
kingfishers doing their thing—flitting, nattering, perching. While I’ve seen an
occasional kingfisher along Fall Creek before, I’d never before seen that many
in one place. A nice moment in the rain on a gray spring afternoon.

A lovely flock on Mount Pleasant this morning. Right by the road On the fields
approaching the Mineah intersection. They were in a calm and convivial state

patterns of their wing & back feathers up close for the first time. A real

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Red-throated Loon

2020-11-22 Thread Eveline V. Ferretti
Saw these beauties (the red-throated loon and the mergansers) on my walk along
Dryden lake today as well!

Spotted the loon doing some deep dives on my way up the lake (from Dryden
Village) at about 11:15a; then the merganser group (one pair of Hoodies among
about 7 or 8 Common Mergansers) on the upper part of the Lake, headed
peacefully direction Village, on my way back, c. 12:30p). Amazing, the way
these feathered creatures can add a quiet silver glow to a gray autumn day.

Yes Kestrels are here year round. In fall the young disperse to feeding
territories which are widely scattered and , of course, the adults get the
preferred areas. As a result some AMKE do migrate within the continent and what
is happening now is a mixture of both. Of interest one short study observed
Makes migration coincidentally with Anax junius (Common Green Darner)
dragonflies for fast food on the run. We should start seeing pair
formation/reunion. Here, we have seen more of each sex in the last few weeks.
During winter the females were on the better territories and the males on areas
more removed.

That's great, Eveline. I saw my first kestrel of year (a male) yesterday on the
road between Freeville and Dryden. And also a Merlin later in the day. Nice to
see them coming back.

[cayugabirds-l] American Bittern, mt. pleasant area

2019-09-16 Thread Eveline V. Ferretti
I made somewhat irregular trip home mid-day to give our dog a quick walk. To
my delight, encountered an American Bittern at our pond, which is located on
Pleasant Hollow Rd (between the Mineah/Mt. Pleasant fields and Ringwood Road).
This is the 2nd time I've had that nice surprise at the pond. I surmise
s/he-they may be coming over for a quick visit from a larger, cattail-rich
marshland nearby.

[cayugabirds-l] FWD: April 26, 'The Curious Mister Catesby,' opening lecture celebrating Mann Library's Mark Catesby exhibit

2017-04-24 Thread Eveline V. Ferretti
For lovers of Catesby bird illustrations!

[cid:image004.jpg@01D2BD1F.3E140160]The Curious Mister Catesby: A "Truly
Ingenious" Naturalist Explores New Worlds
by Leslie Overstreet
Wednesday, April 26, at 4:00pm
Mann Library, Stern Seminar Room 160

Join us for a lecture by Leslie Overstreet, curator of Natural-History Rare
Books at the Smithsonian Libraries. This event opens Mann Library's spring 2017
exhibit program and is in conjunction
with the Department of Plant Science's Horticulture Seminar Series featuring
Mark Catseby's plant introductions and their impact on 18th century gardens.

English naturalist Mark Catesby (1683-1749) crossed the Atlantic to Virginia
and after a seven-year stay, he returned to England with paintings of plants
and animals he had studied. Impressed by his collection, several Fellows of the
Royal Society sponsored his return to North America where he cataloged the
flora and fauna of the Carolinas and the Bahamas by gathering seeds, specimens,
compiling notes, and making watercolor sketches. His seminal work - The Natural
History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands - influenced giants in the
history of science, from Audubon to Carl Linnaeus, and the plants he sent back
to Europe changed horticulture on the continent immeasurably.

Overstreet, contributing author of the book The Curious Mister Catesby: A
"Truly Ingenious" Naturalist Explores New Worlds (University of Georgia Press,
March 2015), will talk about the historical and scientific significance of his
findings.

Reception following the lecture.

This event is sponsored by Mann Library and the School of Integrative Plant
Sciences.

For more information about the exhibit and related programs, see this week's
Chronicle article: "Mann Library exhibit introduces naturalist Mark
Catesby"

YELLOW BELLIED FLYCATCHER also seen Sunday early afternoon (after
Knox-Marcellus walk!) in the old mulberry tree in front of our house on
Pleasant Hollow Rd. (just off of Ringwood; not far from Hunt Hill). Got a good
look at it as it gulped down a mulberry--pale yellow throat breast; barred
wings; orange lower bill.
