Just left Montezuma and although everything is still frozen thousands of Canada
and hundreds of Snow Geese overhead. Good variety of waterfowl starting at
Wolfeys and going south. Five flyby Great Blue Herons at Tsache Pool was nice.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Lack of birds

2017-06-20 Thread Janet Akin
I did a breeding bird survey at Montezuma today. We had 27 Yellow Warblers on
Esker Brook. Just one example but other birds in good numbers including Gray
Catbirds, Willow Flycatcher. Goldfinch ,Cedar Waxwings. I have had Black-billed
Cuckoo on all three surveys I have done this spring. Janet Akin

Subject: Re: -[cayugabirdsl] Lack of birds

I have noticed that breeding species seem to be in fairly typical numbers in
Broome Co. neotropical species included.
Neotropical migration was poor and mostly likely related to a cool and chilly
May 1-16 with a 2 day warm period with very
strong southwest winds on May 18th and 19th. Many of our usual migrants, like
the ones seen at the Hawthorn's for example,
simply overshot our area these two days. As for your lack of breeding species
like chipping sparrows, yellow warblers,
baltimore orioles and others, could this be due to the severe drought your area
had last summer? We didn't have it nearly as bad down here
in Broome Co. Do drought conditions hurt insectivores like breeding birds due
to less insects, harder to find earthworms (for robins) etc so
that nesting success drops? This is the only thing that I can think of since
the species that Chris T-H mentioned originally
winter in different locations (some in the tropics and others in the southern
U.S) and have different migration timetables.
These species are also usually fairly tolerant of humans and disturbed
habitats. Maybe it was last year's drought leading to poor nesting success
across many different songbird species. And given songbirds high mortality
rates, this could lead to a noticeable drop in numbers from last year
to this year. Just a thought. Hopefully they will bounce back, this year is
pretty wet, and in fact it could be too wet!

[cayugabirds-l] Whimbrel, Ruddy Turnstones Genva

2017-05-31 Thread Janet Akin
There were just 4 Whimbrel and 10 Ruddy Turnstones at Lakefront Park, Geneva.
They were on the small beach near the new metal bridge over Castle Creek. They
were flushed by dog walkers while Linda Mott and I were there but returned to
the beach. At times they would land on the rocks on the jetty. Also saw the
Cerulean Warbler in the Mays Point nesting area today for the first time this
year for me. In the Wilgoose field on Rt. 89 we saw two adult Sandhill Cranes
with two small colts. Janet Akin, Seneca Castle

[cayugabirds-l] No Loons at Mud Lock

I was at Montezuma so I checked for the raft of Loons reported at Mud Lock.
There were no Loons when I arrived around 4pm. I also checked behind the
village offices in Cayuga with no luck. I found 1 Horned Grebe and 1 Pied Bill
Grebe and a single Redhead at Mud Lock. It was quiet around Montezuma today.
I did have 5 Dunlin in the corn stubble on Carncross Rd. with 18 possibly more
Greater Yellowlegs. Wood Ducks seemed to be everywhere. On the East Rd. I
observed a pair of woodies fly out of a tree and join a Sandhill Crane feeding
in the corn field. What a strange trio they made with the Woodies feeding
under the Crane. VanDyne Spoor Rd. had good numbers of waterfowl with N.
Pintail being the most prevalent.Good Birding, Janet Akin

Subject: Re: [cayugabirds-l] rare bird rant

OK, here is the problem I have with eBiird. I just checked for sightings in New
York State and the only sighting listed was from Dave Nutter on Feb 22. Nothing
since then. I get eBird alerts for Seneca and Cayuga county. What I get are
Chipping Sparrow, no Gyrfalcon. Granted eBird is great for collecting data, but
for alerting birders to rare birds it is, pardon the expression, for the birds.
Maybe I am doing something wrong in my eBird settings, but it is not clear to
me, and if it not clear it is not useful.

Now if only someone could help me get on the local alert net I would be
grateful.

The great part of using eBird as Bob does is that rare bird sightings output

the text alert system. I highly recommend using BirdLog NA for all your
sightings!
The RBA system still has the advantage of immediacy reaching flip phones, but
can detract from the personal experience just a little. I don't feel the same

themselves.

along Wildlife Drive and then flew in small flocks into the the marsh. The
flight into the marsh started about 5:55. The sound was deafening. While the
black birds were gathering thousands of Snow Geese and Canada geese passed
overhead heading to the lake. Mixed in with the geese were thousands of ducks
and hundreds of Tundra Swans. As I looked from the tower to the east the sky
was filled with the birds for as far as you could see in all directions. Out in
the dry marsh Northern Harriers were hunting. In the tree at the spillway at
one point there were six Bald Eagles. It was an unforgettable hour of nonstop
birds. Good Birding, Janet Akin

[cayugabirds-l] Yellow-headed Blackbird

2012-05-02 Thread Janet Akin
I made the trip to Broome County from Seneca Castle this morning. Spotted the
bird before I got out of the car. Stayed in view across the marsh for the 1/2
hour I stayed. He was really aggressive to any bird that came his way RWBB,
Grackles even a Yellow Warbler which it chased around the marsh. Beautiful
bird!!! Thanks Dave for posting the great directions. Also saw my FOY Gray
Catbird while I was watching the blackbird. Janet Akin, Seneca Castle

Cynthia Smithbower reported a SNOWY EGRET at Tschache Pool, Montezuma NWR to
eBird this evening from yesterday morning. I don't have any more details or
confirmation at this point, but thought I would get the word out in case anyone
wanted to check for it tomorrow. I was up there yesterday afternoon but
neglected to check Tschache.

[cayugabirds-l] Gray Crowned Rosy finch Update

2012-03-14 Thread Janet Akin
This bird touched so many lives. Especially Nancy and I we thought an update
would be a good idea. The bird was first noticed on Sunday March 4th. Nancy
was doing Feeder Watch counts when she saw it on the deck. She grabbed her
camera and snapped a few pictures. She texted me immediately. I came up with a
few ideas which she knew were not right. I then told her to post it on The Labs
Facebook page someone would figure it out. I went back to work and forgot about
it. When I got home there was the text about the id and the excitement began. A
man by the name of Stephen Meyer had the correct id immediately. I later
e-mailed the picture to a few people I knew and trusted who also confirmed it.
We then decided to keep it low key and just let people come by appointment.
Well that didn’t last long someone posted it to NY Birders Facebook page and
the fun began. Sunday night we answered phone and emails to midnight me in the
Finger Lakes and Nancy in Locust Grove. Once the flood gates opened we started
to realize how special the bird was. Only the second sighting in NYS. The other
being in the Catskills on Dec, 22,2011 according to e-bird records. Monday
morning people started to arrive. We had a total of 150 people sign in but on
Weds. we both had to go back to work and also on Thurs. So we feel it was much
higher. We had visitors from Long Island, NYC,Maryland, Pa., NJ, NC, Ontario
Canada, many towns in Central NY, Buffalo, Rochester, Binghamton. We had one
fellow who signed in Wyckoff NJ via Scotland. The story was shown on Channel 7,
Watertown with interviews with Kevin McGowan and Nancy. The story was covered
by the local newspapers.. The story is running on a big screen TV in the
lobby of Nancy’s school. Many generous people donated money for seed. Some of
that money will be used to help buy seed for a program Nancy does at her school
for disabled children which includes feeding and gardening for birds and
Project Feeder Watch. The rest will be donated to a cause to be decided. Rosy
mainly ate mixed seed from the birdbath made into a feeder. He was not seen on
the Niger feeder while we were home. The farthest we saw him fly was the sumac
across the road. We never saw him in the Blue Spruce which a few people asked
about. We saw some photos where the bird was eating sugar maple buds. The only
day he stayed at the feeder after 3:30 was the day before he moved on. On Weds.
night he was there until 4:30pm which had us a little concerned. Thursday
morning March 8th he was last seen at 9 am. One of the many things that came
out of this is the appreciation we felt from everyone who came. On Tuesday it
was like a block party with lots of scopes, camera equipment and many happy
birders. Untold money was pumped into the economy of a very rural part of the
state. When I checked bird sightings for Lewis county on e-bird I was impressed
with the number of bird species people saw and reported. On Sunday morning
Nancy and I got Golden Eagle at the Sugar River bridge what a wonderful way to
end an amazing week. Nancy and Janet

[cayugabirds-l] Hudsonian Godwit

2010-06-08 Thread janet akin
This morning 8:30 the Godwit was feeding close to the Visitors Center. I was
able to watch it from the balcony after two other birders saw it from the
Observation Tower. It was still there when I left around 9. For a double treat
I watched a Red-headed Woodpecker in the swampy area before you get to the pond
on the path from South Spring Pool. The lighting was perfect it was perched on
the side of a snag. The all red head caught my attention and then I saw the
rest of it. It was close enough to ID without binocs. I watched it for a few
minutes before it flew off showing the white rump and secondaries. Janet Akin
