  you found
the biggest hammer and made it work :)
HA HA HA HA! That's what I learned too with my engineering
degree!!! (oh how many hammers I have used!)
And before that, with my physics degree, I learned that the most
difficult solution must be the best solution!!!
 HA HA HA HA !

Isn't that called "Percussive Maintenance"?

2000-05-16 Thread Olive, Christopher M Mr USACHPPM

echoing this thread to CF-community, as seth so rightly pointed out.

jake, that's exactly what i'm talking about. the professors may have gotten
their degrees in the 80s/70s. however, the principles underlying the array,
structure, and loop have NOT changed since then. i would venture to say
that they have not changed in quite a while. it is when we learn the
theory, not the application, that we can really raise the ceiling of our
programming skills.

This will amuse some of you no doubt ... my 20 year old son dropped out of
university. He just wouldn't put in the work and the results reflected
his effort. He's got a job in a support department for a software
 company.

After he made the decision to drop out (only days before the decision was
made for him I should add) he sat back in the couch and said "A. At
last. I'm finished with all that learning!"

HEhehe . hate to have bad news for you kid, but your learning's only just
 started.

Seems to me the vast majority of people earning a living in Internet
disciplines are doing things they never learned in university. Technology
is just moving far too fast for schools to keep up.

Similarly, if we let our own knowledge fall behind, we're dead ducks.

Re: Slightly OT: Lighten things up a little

2000-05-15 Thread Eric Dawson

University. dollar for dollar I would have been better off not going. I just
look at my peers for that one. We all make the same amount of money, I am
probably the median value there. (but I do know what median means for what
that is worth.). Subtract out the cost of an education and lost income (and
I did OK throughout school working parttime 15 - 20 hrs a week, and summer
jobs throughout, and fulltime + parttime in my last year of school). but the
net effect is obvious.

Value of University. Career path. And not as risky to change paths. I will
make more money changing careers than if I didn't go to school. Why. my
paper from U. that is all.

But what did I learn? Some pretty bad habits.
First year, I said, alright let's go, Dean's Honour list. GPA. I was a
little scared, I ain't gonna be no failure. So I worked reasonably hard. Got
the accolades and the GPA. yahooo!

But I also came to the realization that there was no limit to the amount of
work you could put in. except for time of course, the physical limitations.
There is always more to learn, and a higher degree of understanding.

The trick at school for me became how efficiently can you learn. How little
could be done to make the grade.

BTW. I learned how to party before I want to school, and for the record, I
thought those learner types were softasses around the keg.

RE: Slightly OT: Lighten things up a little

2000-05-15 Thread Olive, Christopher M Mr USACHPPM

i'm afraid i'd have to disagree with that. i may not "use" anything i
learned in college in respect that they never taught me ASP, CF, IIS, etc.
however, the concept of a stack, queue, linked list, structure, array, etc.,
is universal to languages (ok, well, most languages). it is in
*understanding* the concepts of these things that college shows its value.
because of this (fairly) solid foundation in programming *theory*, i am
better able to leverage my skill sets in languages i know. more
importantly, they help me in learning something new. when you boil it down,
all languages are the same (ok, there are sub-types of programming languages
(procedural, functional, OO)), all you need to know is where to put the semi
colons.

than other sets made in the US.

RE: Slightly OT: Lighten things up a little

2000-05-15 Thread Dave Watts

i'm afraid i'd have to disagree with that. i may not "use" anything
i learned in college in respect that they never taught me ASP,
CF, IIS, etc. however, the concept of a stack, queue, linked list,
structure, array, etc., is universal to languages (ok, well, most
languages). it is in *understanding* the concepts of these things
that college shows its value. because of this (fairly) solid
foundation in programming *theory*, i am better able to leverage
my skill sets in languages i know. more importantly, they help
me in learning something new. when you boil it down, all languages
are the same (ok, there are sub-types of programming languages
(procedural, functional, OO)), all you need to know is where
 to put the semi colons.

I have to second that. I didn't get a CS education, and I had to learn all
that stuff the hard way, while I was learning how to use a specific
language. The underlying concepts are really the hard part; specific
language implementation is relatively easy.

The main skills I look for in people coming to work here are
logic/analysis, critical thinking, an understanding of algorithms, and a
good grasp of data and information movement and storage. I've known some
people who gathered those skills in a CIS program. I've known more who got
them elsewhere. I personally went the hardcore nerd route and got a math

RE: Slightly OT: Lighten things up a little (my take)

2000-05-15 Thread Claremont, Timothy S

My take on the education angle with regards to the computer field is
apparently quite a bit different.

A college degree in any field shows an indication of your ability to learn.
If I have two candidates that are OTHERWISE comparably qualified, the degree
holder will likely get the nod because of an intangible that the degree
implies. (I am not saying that the non-degreed individual is any less
qualified, I am just saying that with the limited information that you
typically have on candidates, the degree makes for a LOGICAL tie breaker.)

With a degreed individual I can expect a moderate level of decent
communication skills, the ability to deal with deadlines, etc. etc.

Because things like this do not tend to be revealed in the
application/resume process, I have to turn to the degree as an indication of
ability.

Could really help on the diet if it was to Lock up on you... for some of us
that is =) Get M$ involved, it could be a good thing, America would
have there Fridge's locking up and we would all be getting smaller... or
CF_Call_For_Pizza would get used a lot more.

Hmm.. opens a door to a whole new set of viruses for the M$ Fridge..
* The PETA virus that will not allow your fridge to order anything but
organically grown vegetables packed in recycled paper bags where "no animals
were harmed".
* Arnold ("Green Acres") virus that makes squealing pig noises every time
you open the door, also known as the "Deliverance" virus.
* NAFTA virus that replaces your beer orders for Bass Ale, Sierra Nevada,
and Sam Adams with Corona and sometimes Dos Equis
* Titanic virus, your fridge doesn't stop making ice.

I can see I need to buy more stock in Cisco because I'll have to get a new
router for just household internet appliances.

This will amuse some of you no doubt ... my 20 year old son dropped out of

After he made the decision to drop out (only days before the decision was

HEhehe . hate to have bad news for you kid, but your learning's only just

is just moving far too fast for schools to keep up.

RE: Slightly OT: Lighten things up a little

2000-05-15 Thread Owens, Howard

When ever I teach, my first night lecture ususally include a talk about this
career field and one of the things I always tell the students ... "When I
was a kid, I asked my mom about becoming a doctor. She said, 'Well, that's a
fine job and you can make lots of money, but you never really stop going to
school. (and I hated school). Doctors have to read all of the medical
journals and read medical books and never stop learning because medicine
changes so fast. Well, that didn't sound too appealing to me, but guess
what happened when I became an adult ... I went into the Internet
development, where technology is constantly changing and you have to keep
learning to keep up and you have to read all the journals and learn, learn,
learn all of the time."

If you're not prepared to be a life-long learner, this is not a good career
choice.

RE: Slightly OT: Lighten things up a little

2000-05-14 Thread Duane Boudreau

Alternative 1:
Why not try the heads up display that some of the luxury cars on the market
offer today. Enlarge the display to cover the entire windshield and combine
it with a steering wheel that has a keyboard built where the horn switch
goes (who needs a horn there anyway) or dragonfly voice recognition
software.

(h... wonder if my wife will ok a trip to the local car dealership :)

Alternative 2
I went to a videoconferencing (past life :) show in in Boston and one of the
customers of the company I worked for, had mounted a 15in monitor for
videoconferencing in the customized dash board of a mid 60's (?) corvette.
Combine that with the keyboard or voice recognition above.

This way your girlfriend can still sit in the front seat and you can still
code :)

Duane Boudreau
(Wanting Alternative 1 badly but for the passenger side with voice
recognition)

I think if you watch the road instead of your monitor, you'll have more
luck.

BTW - where do you put your monitor, I tried putting it in front of the
steering wheel, but it was too close, then I tried on top of the dash but it
was too far away, I was thinking about putting it on the passanger seat and
putting the girlfriend in the back, or get her to drive while I sit in the
back and continue to code.

It would be interesting to hear what others are doing to reduce the amount
of wasted, non-coding time.

Cheers

2000-05-14 Thread Michael Imhoff

I totally agree with the nice drive in the country, that's half the reason I
bought it. Most of you are lucky cause you can get away from work for the
most part. I live in a 11*15 dorm room with another person so unless I'm
out to eat, or rarely attending a class :-), my clients can get to me.

The car is relaxing but as you say, looking at those lug nuts does tend to
perk you up a bit. hehe

Michael, I don't know about the judgement part, but a nice, top down
ride in the country in my Miata sure clears my head after a long day at
the screen. BTW, staring eye-level at the lug nuts on truck wheels at
red lights tends to make one a more defensive driver!

Re: Slightly OT: Lighten things up a little

2000-05-13 Thread AustralianAccommodation.com Pty. Ltd.

Well here in australia wearing seat belts are compulsory and if you are
caught by the police you are fined and in addition to that you loose 3
points off your licence. In Australia a driver is given 12 points on their
licence and each driving offence he / she makes the driver is fined and also
has points deducted

once you are at zero points you loose your licence if you are caught
speeding less than 15km over speed limit there goes another point; if
speeding 15km 30 km over limit there goes 3 points if speeding 30km 45km
over speed limit there goes 4 points over 45 km I think you loose all points

keep in mind with each offence you loose points as well as receive a fine
you must pay

the speeding points thing I can understand however loosing 3 points for
forgetting to place a seatbelt on is a bit tough

Yeah me too!
There were two lists created Stephan Tual created the
cf-soapbox and shortly after md created the cf-community which in my mind,
helped add personality to the list.

I think a web site for this purpose would be a great idea. You could even
archive cf-talk for search etc, but add pictures or cartoons to the posts
from the poster. ... and here we go

In fact, I use hotmail for the cf-talk list since it is so high traffic. ie
I already use a web interface for the discussion, no reason a mail client
couldn't easily tailored specifically for this type of discussion list.

perhaps the owner of this list would like to set up the Yahoo

CF-Talk-UG (was RE: Slightly OT: Lighten things up a little)

2000-05-12 Thread Owens, Howard

I don't know if MD is interested in defraying his costs are making any money
on his various CF community projects ... but ...

I used to run a list for RVers (well, I still do, but it's a different list
now) and the member aggitated to get a place to post bios and pictures, so I
gave it them. It became the RVClub http://www.rvclub.com/ and has been a
steady source of income for three years ($10 a year per member).

IF MD wanted to set up a DB and charge for the access to it, I would pay,
especially if the fee was something low, like $10 a year.

Just a thought.

BTW: While we're posting links with our pictures ... here's me and my wife
outside of Sun Studio circa 1994 (before I became a Web developer and put on
about 50lbs -- a result of eating better and sitting more)
http://www.hbo3.com/ Fortunately, we happened to be dressed the part that
day ... if you didn't know better, you might think it was circa 1955 and
Elvis, Scotty and Bill could be inside at that very moment changing American
culture forever.

But I have a plan for this One small text ad included in the cf-talk
footer. Being small and text, it would be relatively unobtrusive, but
because we are a distinct target market for cf webhosts, CF based products,
Allaire tech support and classes, people would pay good money for even a
small text ad. Those companies want us more than they want anybody else.

Although the amount of time required to coach Shatner into conveying the
concept of a LIFE might encourage Priceline to hire someone else for the
job...

 have a site with
some sort of profile for each CF-Talk member. A short

 maybe link to a

You know you're a ColdFusion programmer if you...

- Refer to the book as CF WACK

- Have ever been photographed carrying CF WACK CF AD like the Ten
Commandments.
- Blow up POSIX code by habitually double-bracketing character classes.*
- re-wrote the CFID/CFToken security routines in a less-worthy language,
just so you'd feel comfortable with it.
- DON'T confuse Oracle TO_DATE() format codes with CF Date Format codes.
- Have a bumper sticker reading 'WWBFD'.
- CFInclude stylesheets.

You know you're a ColdFusion programmer if you...

CF_Start CF_everthing with "CF".

cflock the doors at night before you cfpop a cold one.

Have a cfcookie at the cftable while reading your cfmail

You refer to Sex as a cftransaction that sometimes involves

You actually find it humorous to inject CF tags into every day

"you know you're a ColdFusion programmer when..." list. For instance

1) You know you're a ColdFusion programmer when you press the # key

I know that sounds lame, but I need some people with some good humor

No, no! The proper syntax is:

  SELECT * from KIDS
  WHERE dinner_time = #now()#

 For speed, shouldn't that be...
 Select Name
 from Kids (nolock)
 where dinner_time=CreateDate()

for those running SQL Server anyway

I think the SQL Server function is GETDATE(), and if you use the NOLOCK
optimizer hint, what happens if a kid is being updated or inserted while
you're selecting? You know how painful that can be. Talk about dirty reads.

 What Would Ben Forta Do?

There is a Christian slogan now, with bumper stickers and bracelets and
all
kind of marketing paraphernalia - "WWJD", or What Would Jesus Do?

in ignorance what does wwbfd stand for. I can have the stickers done in a
hour, and shipped in two if I had the artwork and the orders.

Ah, but with Studio 4.0.1, you no longer have to do that. # completion is
great!

Hey everyone, for a simple new idea for my homepage, I wanted to start a
"you know you're a ColdFusion programmer when..." list. For instance

 1) You know you're a ColdFusion programmer when you press the # key twice
on
your phone to "close the variable".

I know that sounds lame, but I need some people with some good humor to
start this page. Feel free to submit to me your ideas, they will go up on
my page with your name and optionally your email when it is complete.
 Thanks!

I know this one is lame but it's late:-)

RE: Slightly OT: Lighten things up a little

2000-05-08 Thread Sean Brown

Copying cf-community, this belongs there.

You know you're a ColdFusion programmer if you...

- Have a quote from Dave Watts in your .signature file
- Think sending an email to cf-talk is the fastest way to contact your
wife/husband
- Have ever composed a "Why I hate sys-con" email
- Have "cfoutput/cfoutput" mapped to a keyboard shortcut
- Think that cf_ObjectDump object="#Session#" IS the interactive debugger
- Have ever tried to use
"CFTEMPONLYFORSETVARIABLENEVERUSETHISNAMEINYOURCODE122333654321" in
your code to see what would happen
- Know where the above reference to
"CFTEMPONLYFORSETVARIABLENEVERUSETHISNAMEINYOURCODE122333654321"
comes from
- Refer to the book as CF WACK
- Know the publication date/ISBN number for "Allaire Spectra E-Business
Construction Kit"
.
