[Chevelle-list] Changing the subject

2011-06-20 Thread Dale
So why not just start a new email and include a correct Subject? It
eliminates all the replies to something you're not trying to convey and
makes it hard for someone to find your thread with the wrong Subject.

What type of floor shift? Check with vendors such as ShiftWorks, Lokar,
Hurst, BM, etc. especially for installation instructions. Each will have a
different installation procedure and a difference between a cable setup or
mechanical linkage.

The factory Assembly Instruction Manual (AIM) will also have information on
a stock mechanical linkage setup.
http://macswebs.com/6667aim/67/upcxx/m/files/m35a11.jpg shows how to adjust
the factory linkage. There are other pages dealing with throttle linkage
and neutral safety switches.

I have AIMs on CD at my website http://chevellecd.net

Yes but you'll notice the only HA Chevelle (A) code is 1969. It could very
well be an engine block from a full size Chevrolet (B) though. In any
event, it's probably a good engine and no reason not to use it unless you
enter in some shows as an original or original restored car and they even
check engine codes - which many do not, not even AACA.

HB 1968 327 275 MT B,

HA 1969 350 300 MT A,

It could be any of the three. You will want to find the casting number to
see which block it is, and then see if you can find the casting date. For
tips, see http://www.nastyz28.com/sbchevy/sblock.php That site has the best
casting codes, suffix info, and other engine stuff out there for our cars.
Been using it for over ten years. Nasty Z28 has two HA codes:

HA 1965 327 4 spd tran. std 275 4
full size/Camaro

HA 1969 350 manual trans 300 4

Check the date for the most accurate estimate of what it was.

Re: [Chevelle-list] 66 327

2011-06-06 Thread Dale
I think if you look again, it's the number 1. The letter I was used to
represent the number 1 on pre 69 engine build date stampings but beginning
in 1969 the number 1 was beginning to be used; like these
http://chevellestuff.net/1969/engines/index.htm.

A suffix code of IHA makes no sense and neither would a data of T052 - not
enough numbers to make a mm/dd code. Dealers would not have installed a
warranty engine with a date coded and suffix stamped engine. The warranty
was only 2 years or 24000 miles for 1966 Chevelles.

Sounds more like someone stamped a 1969 engine suffix code (or tried to) on
the engine block but without a photo. If you have a photo of the engine
pad, could email it to me off list at ad...@chevellestuff.net?

I attached pages from an old GM parts manual that show the suffix HA is a
1965 manual transmission 327 (page32). On page 19 it tells us to use the
66-67 protecto plate identification on page 23 where it shows the T for
Tonawanda , the 05 for May and the 21 for 21 day so you have a nice 327 for
a manual trans built on the 21st of May 1965. Good Job!!

2011-06-06 Thread Dale
Yes but you'll notice the only HA Chevelle (A) code is 1969. It could very
well be an engine block from a full size Chevrolet (B) though. In any
event, it's probably a good engine and no reason not to use it unless you
enter in some shows as an original or original restored car and they even
check engine codes - which many do not, not even AACA.

From ChevelleStuff.net, I found more than one HA code, but no IHA codes.

Code Year CID HP Trans Platform/Comments

HA 1965 327 250 MT B

HA 1967-68327 275 MT B

HAH 1966 327 275 MT B,

HB 1968 327 275 MT B,
HDC

HA 1969 350 300 MT A,

It could be any of the three. You will want to find the casting number to
see which block it is, and then see if you can find the casting date. For
tips, see http://www.nastyz28.com/sbchevy/sblock.php That site has the best
casting codes, suffix info, and other engine stuff out there for our cars.
Been using it for over ten years. Nasty Z28 has two HA codes:

HA 1965 327 4 spd tran. std 275 4
full size/Camaro

HA 1969 350 manual trans 300 4
A F X

Check the date for the most accurate estimate of what it was.

There seems to be some confusion about the different plates we all are
talking about here so here is a brief description of each to help.

The 65-67 Chevelles has the VIN tag on the left front door hinge pillar.
68-72 are on the left dash visible through the windshield. This is the tag
that identifies your car with the DMV for licensing, ownership, etc. It is
illegal to tamper with or remove this tag. There are several places you can
find the hidden VIN's on these cars. Since the frames can be changed,
probably the best place would be on the fire wall under the heater blower.

The only 1965-1967 model year and plant I know of that stamped a partial VIN
behind the heater box on the firewall was Atlanta in 1967. I believe it
became common practice for all plants from 1968 on.

The tag on the left hand portion of the cowl is the trim tag. This tag
gives you body build date, trim codes,Model year and ID, interior style,
body color, etc. Most restorers feel this tag is also very important to the
car but it will not suffice for a VIN tag with the DMV and it is not illegal
to remove.

Formal name is Fisher Body Number plate (aka trim tag, cowl tag, etc.) It
is illegal to remove/alter/etc. in Oklahoma as of November of 2007 for 1953
through 1977 model year vehicles. See
http://chevellestuff.net/misc/oklahoma_trim_tag_law.htm

The protect-o-plate is a plate that came with your classic when it was new.
It came in a cardboard pamphlet in your glovebox. It was used for warrantee
purposes. It is coded for all the options on your car and thus can identify
an SS for 69-72 when SS was simply an option. Other Chevelles 65-68 an SS
can be identified in the VIN code.

The Protect-O-Plate first appeared in 1965, so there would be no such thing
for the 1964 model year. Only certain options were coded (not all options)
and different years showed different options. Only in 1969 and 1970 can it
be used to identify an SS-optioned Chevelle by looking at the original
engine code since all 69-70 Chevelle SS-optioned Chevelles came with a
performance-oriented 396 or 454 and that engine code is on the POP. When
the SS option became more of a dress-up option than a performance one in
1971-72, both 350 engines as well as the 402 engine could be ordered with or
without the SS option so the presence of these engine codes is not a way to
tell; only the 454 engine in both 1971-72 were available with the SS option
exclusively.

The build sheets were sheets with all the specific cars options so the guys
on the line knew how to build each individual car. They were to be thrown
away after they were used but many guys simply stuffed them in the seats,
doors, above the glove box or gas tank and anywhere else they could hide
them. So if you can't find your build sheet it's because someone else did
many years ago and tossed it or the guys on the line that day were doing
their job correctly and disposing of your sheets correctly. These sheets
have all your options on them and thus can identify a real 69-72 SS.

There are other ways to identify an SS Chevelle from 69-72 such as unique
paint codes, engines with matching VINs, W in the VIN of the 72's, etc. But
the build sheet is the gold standard.

Again, an engine with matching partial VIN stamped on them is not a way to
tell 1971-1972 SS-optioned Chevelles as noted above. The generally accepted
paperwork called a 'buildsheet' was used in Fremont as early as 1964. Other
plants didn't begin using them until the 1969 model year. From 1964 (except
for Fremont) through 1969, the paperwork used by workstations was BODY
BROADCAST COPY and CHASSIS BROADCAST COPY sheets and has almost no
information about options. See http://chevellestuff.net/1969/bs/kan/kan.htm
for some 1969 examples of these sheets.

Hope this clarifies a few things.

Tony

I didn't see a response to the message below but may have missed it. VIN
plates have been around for years, at least as far back as 47 that I know of

Not completely true. A 71 Chevelle with a 454 in which the partial VIN on
the block matches that of the car's VIN would verify it as an SS. 72 as well
but not needed because the W in the VIN would verify this year.

2011-05-05 Thread Dale
The numbers of interest would be on the top of the frame rail. Those on the
side are the mfg. number and date, the top of the frame rail will have the
partial VIN. However, the partial VIN is of no use in determining whether
it was born with the SS option or not; a match would only mean the frame is
original to the car. But, see http://chevellestuff.net/qd/frames.htm for
the locations of previously found partial VINs on the frame.

See http://chevellestuff.net/1969/69ss.htm for more on the 1969 SS option.

Does either the engine or 4-speed have a partial VIN stamped on them? If
they are original to the car and match the car's VIN, that should suffice.

Rick,

I would imagine he's talking Hughes satellite, it's also offered through
DirecTV and maybe even Dish, don't know. Good I suppose if your area
doesn't have any cable service or access to DSL. Download times may be
acceptable (like DSL) but uploads are really slow. I have cable here in
Lawton for Internet, TV and now phone. Not as fast as others (10MB down,
1MB up) but it's the fastest available here and since I do a lot of
uploading for my web sites, DSL or satellite was never an option for me.

You say you want to get TV from the Internet.how are you connecting to the
Internet now if not by DSL, cable, or satellite? I have both satellite and
cable. Satellite primarily for TV but high winds and storms here due knock
it out occasionally and cable for Internet, phone, and those times when the
satellite is knocked out.

Re: [Chevelle-list] fuel problem

2010-11-30 Thread Dale
I just recently changed the fuel pump on my 67 327 and tried the bolt trick.
Even using a longer bolt that I could physically feel in the push rod hole, the
bolt never contacted the push rod; the rod ran underneath the bolt. Wound up
having to remove the plate, grease up the rod with some bearing grease to help
keep it against the camshaft. I remember it working in the past but didn’t on
this engine. ???

Every hard starting SB Chevy I ever owned, had either a weak or bad fuel pump

Yes pull the short bolt and stick longer bolt which will hold the fuel pump
push rod up.

also had the fuel line problem as discussed but replacing that did not do much
good, neither did the carb overhaul. are there any tricks out there for
replacing the fuel pump? don;t some blocks have a tapped hole in the front
where you can put a bolt and bottom out against the push rod (holding it in
place)

1957 did indeed still use a 265 engine but these were coded C, CD and CE.
Optional external oil filters were offered in 1955 since there was not an
integral oil filter with the engine. See
http://stovebolt.com/techtips/engines/oil%20filters/index.html about half way

Brad may be on to it. The 55 56 Chevy 265 and the 57 283 used the single
letter F in the suffix code. The same Corvette used FG for the
Powerglide. The oil fill tube you mention was used up through 1968 so
that's not an issue. The 55 did not have an integral oil filter, i.e., no
canister on the driver side rear of the block. There was an optional oil
filter system but it was an add-on the sat on top of the engine.

Looking into more resources the early engine codes were as yours appears.

0552582 is the sequence number of the engine (although my source says this
should only be 6 digits
F is for Flint engine plant
56 is the model year
F is the engine code and in 1956 it's a 170hp Powerglide passenger. Again,
Corvette used a 2-letter code and did not use a 2-bbl intake.

I'd really be interested in seeing a readable photo of it.

screws that hold the solinoid to the butterfly backed out and ripped out the

Re: [Chevelle-list] (no subject)

2010-06-03 Thread Dale
It could be that no vendors are advertising it or even offering it; maybe
because Windows Virtual PC no longer requires a hardware enabled CPU to run
in XP or 32-bit mode as Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 did - apparently two
different products. 64-bit is pretty much becoming the standard for new PCs
and CPUs. I bought Windows 7 Pro a few months ago and it comes with both
32- and 64-bit DVDs. I installed the 64-bit version initially. That's when
I discovered you needed a CPU with hardware virtualization to run 32-bit
programs with Virtual PC 2007. So, I reloaded the drive with the 32-bit
version so I could run my old software.

Now that Windows Virtual PC is not suppose to be hardware dependant I may
reinstall the 64-bit version and test it. On the MS website they still show
32- and 64-bit versions of Windows Home Premium for sale.

In either case I'm sure you need the Pro version to run Windows Virtual PC
as I just tried to download the software to my laptop (with 64-bit home
version) and got a dialog box saying I needed the Pro version to run it.

I assume you've gone from a 64 bit OS to a 32 bit and that the program
that won't run is a 64 bit because the other way around would work. If
your computer has a 64 bit CPU, as most new ones do, you could install

about the same size as an El Camino - full size is $399.

Line-X of Anaheim completed the spray-on bedliner today and the results are
outstanding. The truck beds never looked that good even from the factory,
and after over 40 years of use mine was pretty beat up. The spray-on
bedliner considerably improved the appearance and will of course make the
truck more practical.

Re: [Chevelle-list] General Machine Shop Question

2010-05-15 Thread Dale
Back in the day, machine shops I used for this kind of stuff was generally a
well equipped parts store with a machine shop in the rear. Almost everyone
got dealer pricing on parts anyway but if a person wanted to bring their
own parts in to be installed it usually meant no warranty.

Independent machine shops today generally rely (I would gather) on not only
the labor but the markup on the parts as well.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Tires for my 67

2010-05-11 Thread Dale
Wouldn't a 70 series tire give a narrower tread footprint than a 65 series
tire for a given size? A comparable 215/65R15 and 215/70R15 BF Goodrich
Radial T/A shows a 7.0-inch tread width for the 65 series and 6.4-inch read
width for the 70 series.

Technically the blanket statement that *any* tire size change will affect
your speedometer reading is correct but as long as you keep the overall
diameter within .1 or .2 of the original, you shouldn't notice a difference.
Even with the 205/65R15 your speedometer will only read 0.1% too fast. At a
real 65mph *real* speed your speedometer will read 65.65. A taller
205/70R15 is .8 taller and will make your speedometer 3.1% too slow; a
65mph reading on your speedometer would really be 67mph.

I've owned a lot of 67 Chevelles and if you can read their sweep
speedometers within 2mph, you're doing pretty good! :*)

You might check my web page at http://chevellestuff.com/tools/tire_calc.htm.
Just plug in the 195/75R14 in the Stock tire size and play with the New tire
size. It'll compare Sidewall, Radius, Diameter, Circumference, and Revs per
mile for each size and report how slow or fast your speedometer will read as
a percentage.

One should be aware that 'calculations' don't always reflect the real world
and tire manufacturer's differ a bit and many tire sizes just aren't readily
available. Looking at the same BF Goodrich Radial T/A chart doesn't list a
205/65R15 size but does list a 225/60R15 which is .1-inch taller and would
make your speedometer read 0.4% too slow. Play with the calculator then
find your favorite tire mfg and see what they offer.

I agree with your tire size selection, try to go with a 70 series size tire
to widen the stance a little bit. Any tire size change will effect your
speedo. You will need to change driven/drive gears once you select your
tires.

Re: [Chevelle-list] I need advice

Depends on where you are as to what shop I'd recommend for a 700R4 - or any
transmission. I've heard good things about Phoenix Transmission in
Weatherford, TX. and had them install one in my old 67 SS396. Their high
horsepower unit (up to 450hp is just under $1800 -
http://www.phoenixtrans.com/html/gmtrans.html. Naturally if you're nowhere
close by Texas, I'm sure there are other shops just as capable.

There are a lot of aftermarket disc brake companies as well and most are
pretty good. Building a high horsepower engine, you shouldn't skimp on
brakes. Expect a good disc brake setup to run anywhere from $700 to $1500
depending on company. Don't settle for some $395 eBay special. Baer is on
the higher end but have excellent products. MP Brakes (mpbrakes.com),
Classic Performance (classicperform.com), Inline Tube (inlinetube.com), and
I'm sure there are more offer basic kits from around $700 up or a bit more
if you want power disc.

Your tire size will have some effect on the rear end gear you might want to
choose. A page at my site,
http://chevellestuff.com/tools/rpm_calculator.htm, will let you play around
with tire sizes and rear end ratios based on your transmission selection.
Transmission gear ratios are shown for the most popular GM transmissions;
just plug in your rear tire size (such as 235x60x15), a rear axle ratio
(like 3.55), a highway speed (like 75mph) and it'll calculate your RPM. Be
aware there will some slippage with an automatic so numbers won't be exact
but they'll be relative regardless of ratio, tire size, etc. selected.

Taking my car for example, TH350, 3.36 rear end, 235x60x15 tires and at
75mph it calculates to 3245 rpm where my tach shows about 3500. Changing to
a 700R4 (and nothing else) with the overdrive ratio the rpms drop calculates
to 2270 at 75mph. I could run as low as a 4.56 gear and still only be
turning 3100 at 75mph with the o/d.

I just purchased a new GMC vehicle and the dealer offered the following new
package called Nitro Fill'. The claim is that nitrogen is better than
compressed air in a tire. They claim that nitrogen is a dry gas and is free
of moisture. It doesn't deteriorate the rubber and it is lss susceptible to
air loss with temperature changes.

I'd be interested to hear what the group thinks about this. Thanks

OK I know the rule of thumb that engine components could be dated up to 3
months prior to engine build date. I am looking for a date correct water
pump. My stamped engine assembly date is 5/18. I've located a water pump
dated 5/19/66. Were the water pumps put on at the time of engine assembly or
a later date? Conceivable that a 5/18 assembled engine could have a 5/19
water pump on it?

I got some news for you therre skippy. That 2009 car is built from much
stronger metal than the 59 Impala is. Not to mention the 2009 car is much
more structurally sound than the 59 as well as the fact that the metal in
the 59 has had 50 years to begin deteriorating. News cars are designed so
the passenger compartment doesn't crush and it did it's job. That video is
very real. If you were driving the 59 Impala in that video..you'd be dead,

They are physically the same from 66-72, except 66 doesn't have a button

68-72. Just going off memory here.

They'll be resurgence, just like the 40s 50s cars are still popular today.
In twenty or so years, the 70s cars will still be going strong and maybe
some 80s A-body machines. Like Larry, I see the current Mustangs, possibly
late Camaros and maybe even the new Camaros Challengers will survive and

Re: [Chevelle-list] Location of shifter

2009-07-27 Thread Dale
The Competition Plus is/was different than the Super Shifter. The Super
Shifter was a 'generic' unit and sat the housing in a straight line with the
shift rods with the installation kit (rods, shift arms, etc.) being the only
difference between various transmissions.

The Comp Plus is/was a 'bolt-in' to replace the original Muncie unit with
installation kits and shifter body tailored to specific applications. The
shift handle on the 68 unit is shown to be bent about 1 toward the driver
half-way up the handle. Isn't this bend applicable to the original unit?
Interior photos I have of 68s with a console appear to show a bend.

Could it be you might have the wrong installation kit or shift tower? Maybe
a 64-67 unit or a 69-72 unit? My 2005 Hurst .PDF shows a 68 with a Muncie
is different from 64-67 and 69-72 units. Installation kit (373 3163) is the
same as 64-67 due to the attachment arms but the shifter only (391 8014) is
the same as the 69-72 Muncie units.

Looks like your transmission is made of different pieces and that's not
uncommon.

3846429 is the number for a 63-65 tail housing, driver side speedometer, 27

3925660 is the number for 1968-1970 main case

R9R27B is a mystery. Is this a stamped sequence or a casting?

The only way to really insure it has a M22 gear setup in it is to pull the
side cover and inspect the cut of the gears. See

Sounds more like the fuel system in this situation. Try turning the key to
on for a few seconds before cranking. If it starts quicker, replace the
fuel filter. Otherwise get the pressure checked, you may need a new fuel
pump. I had the same problem with my Tahoe I swore up and down it was a

[Chevelle-list] non-Chevelle - 2003 Sable won't start

2009-05-24 Thread Dale
Wife's 2003 Sable doesn't want to start. Turn ignition key and all it does
is click several times. All accessories work (radio, power windows, seats,
headlights, etc.) She said odd things happening the last few days - with
A/C on max the radio would come on by itself, she'd turn it off and a few
minutes later it'd come back on - also with A/C on max, driver window
wouldn't go down. Not sure if A/C had anything to do with the radio and/or
window or not.

Checked battery connections, 14-16 volts across the battery terminals,
battery level good.

Naturally being a holiday weekend, nothing open to day and maybe not
tomorrow either.

Any thoughts? Starter, solenoid ? Not real bright on anything past the
late 60's. LOL

Re: [Chevelle-list] non-Chevelle - 2003 Sable won't start

2009-05-24 Thread Dale
Thanks, Bill, that could be it. I have a Battery Tender charger and hooked
it up. It has red green indicators and when the green isn't lit it
indicates below 80% battery power. I left it on for about 4 hours before
the green started to flash - indicating the battery had reached 80%. A
couple more hours and the green was steady indicating a good charge. Car
started right up after that.

We've had the car over 4 years and I don't remember ever buying a battery
for it so it may be worn out. I'll have it load tested and see if it's
capable of retaining a charge. First time this has happened with it so it
may be a worn out battery. Hope it's not something in the charging system.

Before you go chasing gremlins, check your connections, especially the
ground. A bad ground can make things seem demon possessed.

Then have the battery load tested. You could waste a lot of time checking
out all manner of weird symptoms when the battery is the culprit.

I have a Hollander's manual for Chevelles. For 68-72 Chevelles there is a
*type* they number as 1943. For Chevelles this fits 68-70 2-dr (exc.
Pickup) 1971 1972 H.T. Conv. Chevelles. Quite a few A-bodies are
listed under type 1943.

Buick Special '68 2 Dr., Conv.

Buick Special '69 2 Dr. exc. GS400 H.T.
Buick Special '70 2 Dr., Conv

Buick Special '71-72 2 Dr. exc. 8-455

The convertibles probably all have boxed frames but other than that are
probably the same basic frame. Don't know why the Buick GS400 or (I assume

I scanned the two pages in the book if you like and will mail them to you

Re: [Chevelle-list] Chevrolet Restoration Pack

2009-04-20 Thread Dale
While it's true much of the information can be found online, it is
convenient to have all of it in one place. While most of the years are not
complete with some optional equipment and some data may be outdated after
publication, it is data published by Chevrolet and is generally good until
someone can disprove it with other GM documentation.

Of course every year is different in what is presented but there are still
some good data that's hard to find online such as standard features found on
the various series.

For me, having all from 64 to 72 is nice but I don't think I'd pay $50 for
any single year.

Re: [Chevelle-list] 1969 SS Spare in Trunk

2009-04-17 Thread Dale
The spare wheel always matched the four mounted on the car, be they SS
wheels or not discounting space saver wheels of course. I assume the spare
wheel was mounted with the tire fill valve down was a conscious decision to
(1) maintain uniformity, (2) possibly to keep the J hook as short as
possible and/or (3) to keep the jack base below the level of the tire.

Think about it, if the wheel were face up the J hook would need to be
longer and force the jack base to be sitting on top of the wheel and on a SS
wheel that would be a very small spot where the center cap hole is tend to
mar the surface. The 1969 AIM does show two configurations on the SS wheel
storage from the J hook and jack base through the center of the wheel on
one to showing the J hook coming through a wheel stud hole and the base is
stored under the wheel/tire along with the mast and wrench stored in
different locations.

[Chevelle-list] Speedometer cable hole

2009-04-16 Thread Dale
I'm looking for data on 67 Chevelles concerning the speedometer cable hole
in the firewall. The 66 model year may also apply.

I have a 67 El Camino that originally came with a Powerglide and the hole in
the firewall for the speedometer cable is just below the steering column.

Question #1. Would I be correct in assuming the 3-speed manual use the same
hole as the Powerglide?

I also know (I think) the 4-speed speedometer cable enters the firewall on
the passenger side.

Question #2. Would (or should) the firewall have provisions for both cable
locations? My Fremont-built El Camino (w/PG) does not have a hole on the
passenger side.

Question #3. Would (or should) a 4-speed car with speedometer cable hole on
passenger side have the hole on the driver side and just have it plugged or
would it even be present?

Then.

Where is the hole in your firewall for the speedometer cable?

What year?

What plant?

What factory transmission?

Thanks!

Re: [Chevelle-list] 69 Chevelle Gas Tank

2009-04-10 Thread Dale
Make sure the old tank is empty of gas and as much vapors as possible before
dropping it. Might even consider running the car as dry as possible -
possible sediment might be a consideration on how dry you run it with the
engine. Naturally, disconnect the hoses and sender wiring before removing
and maybe even flush out the tank with water if possible and let sit for a
day or two with the cap off to help ventilate before dropping the old one.

A floor jack and either a thin piece of plywood or thick cardboard between
the jack head and tank to spread the weight when dropping the old tank. A
buddy helping to keep the tank on the jack would be nice too.

tank under the car, and held it into place, and got one of the straps bolted

It's pretty easy when there is no gas in it

The power steering box itself should bolt in place of the manual box.
You'll need a different pitman arm for power steering.

Power steering pitman arms are listed for:
64-67 Chevelle #5693764 (cast with number 5693763)
68-72 Chevelle #5679209 (cast with number 5679208)

FWIW, manual pitman arms are:
64-67 Chevelle #5693762 (cast with number 5693761)
68-72 Chevelle #7811779 (no casting number given)

Naturally you'll need the proper power steering pump, hoses, brackets,
pulleys where applicable and belt.

Re: [Chevelle-list] VIN numbers matching

2009-03-23 Thread Dale
No, none of should. The tag on the firewall is the Fisher Body number plate
(aka trim tag, cowl tag, etc.) while the VIN plate on the A-pillar is the
Chevrolet identification from GM. Body numbers are generally sequential by
particular STYLE shown on the trim tag while the VIN plate is sequential per
plant in production order regardless of series or body style.

Another misconception is the Style number on the trim tag indicates a V8 or
L6 engine -- it does not. The first 5 numbers of the VIN do indicate if it
was born with a V8 or L6 and the body style (sport coupe, conv., pickup,
wagon, etc.) but the Style number on the trim tag is a different animal.

Don't be too sure about that. The 1970 models are different. The fenders
and extensions on 1970 Chevelles have a defined bodyline down the fender
extending on to the extension. El Caminos and Wagons DO NOT. The same may
( and probably is true) for 71-72 models.

About 10 days ago, I posted that my elky had died on the side of the
road. Asked for suggestions on troubleshooting no spark from an HEI
distributor. After much aggravation blind alleys I got it running today.

I had 3 modules checked by parts store (all good) , 4 coils all ohms
checked the same so I assumed that they were good. Tried various
combinations of modules coils to no avail. Last monday I found the
radio fuse in my fuse box blown. I was sure that I had checked for 12V at
the distributor previously- but maybe I didn't. I have the HEI connected
to the ACC position in my fuse box this is fed by the radio fuse.Dummy
me! Thought I had it licked.

I replaced the fuse and then reassembled my distributor. Took my time to
get it right. Even ohms checked the wire harness, pickup capacitor to
make sure that they were all good.Once done, with SUPREME confidence I
twisted the key. WTF - NO GO! Nothing , not even a hint of wanting to
start. To say I was frustrated was an understatement.Left it alone all
week.

Today I went out to look at it again, starting from square one.
Checked 12V at connector in fuse box - OK. Went to dist to check for 12V.
Disconnected Tach Power wires at distributor. 12 V -fine. Reconnected
power to HEI. Connected timing light ( to a different plug wire) was
gonna check for spark. Went around to door to crank it, while holding
timing lite. Hit the key - and it STARTED first kick! Scared the crap
out of me. WTF - once more.

Went for a test drive. Everything was great, except I had forgot to
reconnect the tach and it was dead. Stopped at K-Mart to buy some stakes
for Christmas Lights. When I came out, I popped the hood to reconnect the
tach wire. Climbed in, hit key - NOTHING AGAIN!. Genius that I am, I
quickly opened the hood and disconnected the tach. STARTED RIGHT UP!
Came home - reconnected tach wire - and no start.BAD TACH - UGH!
Thats my story and I'm stickin to it!

what the original 1 in front of the 7 is on the pad. Usually just 7 for
model year the a and the last 6 of the vin. You should also have some other
letters and numbers on the pad. Will tell you where engine made, date engine
made and then letters which tell what engine hp and if built with a auto or
4 spd trans.

I recently purchased a numbers matching 67 Chevelle SS - My question is the
VIN number on the car should match exactly the engine block number. Is that
correct? The engine number is 17A152662 and the car VIN is
138177a152662I am missing a 7 in the engine block number versus the VIN
on the body. Any thoughts from you experts?

Thanks Jerry

Re: [Chevelle-list] 67 shifting

2008-10-31 Thread Dale
The 700R4 shifting issues depend on what shifter you plan on using. When I
put a 700R4 in place of the 4-speed in my old 67 I used a BM Quicksilver
ratchet shifter and had a bracket made to position the shift handle to come
through the 4-speed's original location. I'd already had a custom console
built with the 4-speed location retained and didn't want to modify the
entire console to accommodate a different location.

If you're going to use a stock-type TH400 console, Shiftworks.com has a
replacement shifter for TH350/TH400 that eliminates the rod linkage in favor
of a cable. That might just work for a 700R4 as well; might not be able to
get to low gear manually due to the detents and stops but that's not clear
on the website. Kind of confusing on their site but they also show the
console lens with (what looks like) P R N O D L2 L1 for 66/67 consoles so
maybe their conversion kit does work on O/D transmissions. Convenience of
the cable is the shifter bolts to the floor as normal and the cable only
requires a small hole forward of the shifter instead of large hole on the
side of the tunnel for mechanical rod linkage. I don't have specific
measurements for the cable's hole but as long as the cable has a pretty
straight forward shot from the shifter, it should still be well within the
confines of the console. I'd guess it's even part of their instruction
sheet.

I've heard the 700R4 swap may require some additional clearance at the rear
with the floorboard. I had mine installed at Phoenix Transmissions in
Weatherford, TX. and they said the same thing. They had found though that
if the body mounts were in good shape and/or recently replaced, they didn't
find this an issue. Biggest problems they had run into was with old,
compressed mounts allowing the body to settle more on the frame thereby
causing the clearance issue. I also had to have the 4-speed driveshaft
shortened but Phoenix Trans took care of that as well.

The only other issue I can think of is trans cooling. Either a radiator
with integral cooling or an external cooler is needed.

Hope some of this helps and good luck on your project!

 Gentlemen and Ladies

Before I get those check the forum section, or the check your factory
assembly book replies. No, I havent done either yet. I'm going to ask
for the been there done that crowd! And links to the first option
 mentioned .

Background: 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu ( bench seat replaced with 99
Grand Am electric bucket seats ), with a 283 2 barrel replaced with a 1984
305 topped off with an Edlebrock Torker aluminum intake manifold and a
 Rochester 4 barrel. Originally a powerglide, I'm now running a 700R4
overdrive (non electric) column shifted. I have a spare steering column
I've removed the shifter from and filled the hole. I have an automatic
transmission console, shifter and shift cable. Yes, you've guessed it,
while gutted, I want to convert it to a floor shifted automatic with the
 console.
What I really hope to get are tips and tricks for this project, that and
maybe a template for cutting the hole for my shifter cable. I figure this
is a great winter project(heated garage). I wanted to get it done before
installing sound deadener , carpet seats, etc.
 .
As I was saying, I'm getting ready to gut the cabin of the car, so any
and all help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: [Chevelle-list] Car show judging

2008-10-29 Thread Dale
Frank,

Their website shows the GOLD SPINNER judging criteria at
http://www.chevyvettefest.net/judging.htm. There is also a statement that
to be judged CORRECT, Indicated item appears correct to the best of the
Judge's knowledge and in accordance with latest data available at the time.
So if there's anything that might not generally be known, I'd say be
prepared to prove it's right.

I don't see anything on the site about Bow Tie Blvd (?) If you can't find
anything there, I would contact the host of the show and ask for their
judging criteria.

Good luck at the show!

 Good evening all -

I was curious if anyone on the list has a copy or can point me in the
direction of a 1000 point judging sheet for cars shows. My brother in
 law
and I are entering our cars in the Chevy Vettefest in Rosemont IL next
 month
and I was curious as to what the judges look for.

I am entering my 2003 50th Anniversary Corvette in the Gold Spinner
category and he is entering his 1971 Camaro in Bow Tie Blvd

 Thanks

Thanks for the replys. I just got the one for this time period and it is a
great one as usual. It has lots of stuff about the 64-65s which is very
interesting to me. I will let the list know when I see another.
