Three soaking wet hours later... all I can say is 'Oh, it was *that*
boat.' I've checked it out every time I'm in this anchorage, and have
wondered for years when this was going to happen. It was a 36 foot
trawler, with light ground tackle, that hasn't moved in six years. At
least it wasn't a sailboat.

You know the type. Skinny crazy guy with a beard, and a recently
acquired skinny crazy woman on board, and a boat that looks bad from 100
meters away.

Guys like that give Crazy Gringos like me a bad name.

Heck, the Mexican Navy showed up to help, and a half dozen folks got out
of bed to help tow it off the rocks. The captain seemed to think he was
a victim of an Act of Cod (sic) and he deserved all the assistance.

Stus-List Able bodied crew available in Toronto Area

2014-09-10 Thread Jean-Francois J Rivard via CnC-List
Hi Y'all,
I've been talking about my sailing adventures to my young co-worker friend from Toronto and he's interested in crewing.
On our lake the clubs have "associate membership" to allow folks without boats to be members. This way they are able to access the "crew wanted" side of the club website and crew on different boats.
Do you guys have similar options on Lake Ontario? My friend is interested in sailing but is just getting started in life and does not have the spare coin for a boat. He's a really nice guy, has no sailing experience, but is very bright and pretty athletic
Please let me know if you need crew or can recommend clubs for him to get started.

Yikes. Is there a term for that? Square waves are when the height equals
the period, but that's twice as bad.

I was just sitting here worrying about Odile. The
forecast track *was* to go straight up the Sea of Cortez, but it now
looks like it'll hit Cabo and La Paz dead on. The outer edges are just
hitting here and it's three days away. Listening on the radio, there's a
boat on the beach already. It's not that bad, so they must have had a
foul up with ground tackle. Don't know any more.

Stus-List Sound exciter installation on a C&C 29

2014-09-10 Thread Ted Drossos via CnC-List
Ron,

I am using a Fusion MS-IP600 stereo unit mounted in the cabin. What you see in
the cockpit in the YouTube video is a Fusion MS-WR600 wired remote. I can
control all the functions of the cabin mounted unit from the cockpit remote.
(Not just the volume) I installed the remote in an existing access port so I
didn't have to drill additional holes in the cockpit. The access port was
factory installed to access the shore power plug and other hidden stuff. I used
two sound exciters per channel. (4 total) The foam adhesive rings that hold the
exciter in place has a very aggressive adhesive. I did however sand the
backside of the cockpit seat backs to create a very smooth surface. Final grit
was 400. The exciter sticks much better to smooth surfaces. There is some
information about the specific sound exciters that I installed located in the
description on YouTube. When the cncphotoalbum.com site had the FORUM
functioning, I had posted some still photos of the actual exciter installation
with an explanation of the installation. I guess that's gone now unless Stu can
set up the FORUM again.

Re: Stus-List Companionway hood

2014-09-10 Thread Bill Coleman via CnC-List
Unless your hood is different than mine, all it does is keep rain and waves
from getting in between the slider and forward part of the companionway, and
protect and hide the tracks and slider. I think you want it open all along
the bottom, or the water won't be able to drain properly.
I think what you are asking is simply how to tighten up the screw holes?
If so, what I did on mine was to ream out the holes a little with my handy
Dremel tool and an eighth inch rasp.
Then I inserted some SS helicoils, I think #10 NC, put a little vaseline on
the screws, screwed them in the helicoils so I could remove them, and bedded
them in the holes with thickened West System epoxy. Worked like a charm.

A couple of the screws are loose on my companionway hood, so I am planning
on removing it and giving it a good cleaning (and cleaning the gunk
underneath it).

What type of sealant should i put into the screwholes when I put it back on?
4200? Silicon? Any advice would be appreciated.

There seemed to be quite the debate a few years ago about whether to seal
the entire underside or not. Mine only appears to have sealant around the
screws and i don't have any leaks (at least not around the companionway!) ,
so I'll probably stick with that method.

Any advice on mounting? Number you used?
What type of "better solution" do you need for mounting?

  Ted's video recommends 4
  "Hiwave. model number HIAX32C20-8 "

But the HiWave model no longer is avail - the Tectonic Elements
  one you have (TEAX32C30-4)
are the basically the same model number and I'm guessing Tectonics
took over the Hiwave products or name change?
I have the stereo - I'll have to check speaker ohm
  recommendations.

I'm thinking I'll mount a set in the cockpit and a set underneath
in the cabin - set them up as front and rear speakers on the
stereo so I can flip back and forth or run both.

Yes, the person who posted that video of the sound exciter installation on a
C&C 29 is a lister. Me. I have to say that I was very skeptical when I
originally started that project but figured that it was worth a shot.
Cutting 6" diameter holes in my cockpit had prevented me from adding
speakers for many years. That YouTube video was taken with an iPad so the
sound quality isn't a true representation of the great sound that these
little sound exciters can produce. A typical speaker would also make nearby
objects vibrate if they were loose and in close proximity. It's not an
issue. This is a great solution to adding sound in the cockpit without
having to cut holes. They stay dry and can't be accidentally damaged by a
foot going through them. I've seen that happen all to often on other boats.

How does the remanufactured engine compare in pricing to the new models?

Thanks for all the input. I will summarize what I have found so far about
engine replacements.

Much to my surprise pricing for new Yanmar engines with similar hp (55 hp) to
the old engine pricing is better in Canada compared to the US.

With "boat show" pricing I have been quoted $14,900 US (list $18320) for a
4JH5E or 4JH57. Of course with Yanmar products they can't be shipped to other
regions so I would have to pick it up in the US and pay state tax, followed by
Canadian tax when it is brought into Canada. (total about 20% :( )

Canadian pricing is approx $14900 CAN, roughly 10% less given the exchange rate
and I wouldn't incur the US state tax.

As many recommend Beta as an alternative to Yanmar I started looking at them as
well. The 50 hp option is about $14,000 CAN before any options (higher output
alternator, longer wiring harness etc) and this is before adding any of the
items required to change engine mounts, exhaust etc. I don't see the
significant savings I was expecting based on others experience. It sounds like
maintainability (parts, access) are better than Yanmar so savings aren't only $.

I am likely going to put in a remanufactured Yanmar 4JH3 which I have been
told should be a drop in fully replacement with the same hp as my turbocharged
older model. It sounds like Schooner Bay have an excellent reputation
delivering fully remanufactured engines for less than half the price of a new
engine.

Thanks for everyones input. I will update the list as my project proceeds.
