Re: Stus-List Jib sheet size

2016-04-26 Thread svpegasus38

Daniel, you are right the 5/8 jid sheets are overkill. But easy to get a
good hand on. When I replace my 5/8 sheets I am thinking that I will probably
go with the 9/16. A little thinner but still easy on the hands. Although with
the fancy lines out there you can find 1/2 in line that is stronger that the
5/8. IMHO it will depend on if you race or worry about spilling your beer on a
tack.

I've got 5/8 sheets on a 145% jib on my Landfall 38. It's overkill. Killing a
flea with a shotgun, almost. Question - will 9/16 do, or do I need 1/2? And how
long?

Charlie,

I've had my sea hood off once to replace the plexi. There isn't much to
keep it centered, as I recall. There is a piece of teak at the forward end
to keep it from sliding to far aft. The 1"x2" teak pieces never had a
covering, just bare wood. Stop by at SBRW this year and I can show you. My
boat is on C dock at HYC.

Subject: Stus-List Sliding hatch details

It appears that my sliding hatch is leaking--water drips from if when it
rains, etc. After 21 years and multiple wire runs for instruments, etc.,
etc. I no longer remember how this hatch was in its original, non-leaking
state.
Currently it simply slides on 1 x 2" teak (?) boards which are mounted on
the coach roof under the 'cover' of both the sliding and fixed hatch. Water
is presumably to flow off both hatches thru limber holes in this cover to
the coach roof.
Initially there may have been guides attached to the teak boards but these
may have either disintegrated or been destroyed over the years per para
above.
My question for the list, esp. 1990 and later C 36 XL, R or + models is
does your sliding hatch have guides to keep the sliding plexi/lexan hatch
'centered' on the teak boards and/or is there something else that is part of
the sliding hatch assembly that prevents water ingress.

Thanks

Re: Stus-List Backstays, running and baby

2016-04-26 Thread Charlie Nelson via CnC-List

Yes for upwind work, if your mast is relatively thin and light.

IMHO, no movement otherwise until you are running downwind when they get
disconnected and run to the shrouds--your shrouds should be fine for any
reaching without the checks.

I would keep backstay tensioned upwind (more in higher wind) and off when
running.

If I am not mistaken, these stays are referred to as either 'runners' or check
stays, since you have a separate backstay.

If not racing and your spreaders are not angled aft, you just need enough
backstay and runners upwind to keep the mast from pumping (moving fore and aft).

Also if your spreaders are not angled aft, you can dispense with the baby stay
entirely since its primary purpose is to help bend mast forward (to flatten
main sail for racing) and also to stop mast pumping in some choppy conditions.
I have removed my baby stay--giving up some main sail adjustments in favor of
keeping my headsail from tearing itself as it catches on the baby stay during
tacks. I think that its usefulness with non-angled spreaders is marginal at
best.

OTOH, if I was planning to go off shore, I would rig the baby stay again. For
my coastal racing and cruising, its too much of a PITA to bother with IMHO.

My previous boat, a Catalina 30, was not setup for racing.
I am trying to figure out this 37/40's backstays.
What I surmise is this:
When hard into the wind, the backstays should be brought back to the deck
fitting just outboard of the jib winches with the windward ones pulled tight.
Is this correct?
Do you move them forward incrementally as the wind comes abeam?
Running downwind they have to be as far forward as the shrouds to remain clear
of the boom.
Any advice is welcomed.
Also, if not racing do I need to be adjusting the hydraulic backstays?

+1 on the KISS counterpoise. Yes, you can make one yourself but the pre-made
thing is nicely finished. Certainly beats running miles of copper tape!

Congrats on the new boat.

I think you will find several Ham and marine operators on the list. On my last
boat, I went with the traditional insulated backstay which was fine. As I’m
not cruising anymore my 706 is now just attached to a long wire which I run up
a spare halyard when I want to play.

Not sure pictures are encouraged due to bandwidth so you may wish to tread
lightly.

Stus-List New C 37 Owner

2016-04-26 Thread Jim Eagon via CnC-List
Hi all:

I just purchased "Trinity", a 1984 C7C 37, from her original owner.
She's in top shape and I want to get some things going for this coming
summer.
My first question is: where can I find a copy of the original owner's
manual for the boat?
I have already looked at the c site but the 37 seems to be missing?

Also, are there any experts out here who have installed SSB? I have some
ideas for
an antenna, but I really would like to know what people have done. I want
to work 10m-80m
and, with the rod rigging, I'm not sure how to string a wire antenna.

Thank you all for your comments and shared wisdom - I have enjoyed reading
the posts so far.

Re: Stus-List C 37 centerboard

2016-04-26 Thread Paul Fountain via CnC-List
I have a 33-II with a centreboard whose pendant broke a couple of years ago. I
had Rob From South Shore yachts make and install the new one. They had an eye
fitting roll swagged on the lower end, which the fed down and attached with a
pin to the board, then hand swagged 2 fittings to make the eye on the deck end.

When hauled the board swung just far enough forward to allow you to reach up
and remove and replace the pin. Have a new pin ready! Ours was just about worse
thru.

boat is in DC and I looked at it and all checked out well visually. I need
to have a survey done still. However I would like to know more information
about converting the ice box to a refrigerator / freezer combo. Since I
live in New Mexico I cannot physically measure the Box. Does anyone have
the dimensions of the ice box, its volume and perhaps if you have a

Stus-List Fw: C 37+ nameplates for sale

2016-04-26 Thread allen via CnC-List
I too have investigated possibilities to replace missing characters off the
nameplate. I have worked with Kay Cushing and her magic laser machine. We
have replicated the characters "C", "O", "&" and the spear, all cut from cast
smoked acrylic window remnants. All the remaining characters are variants of
the one we've already created. They can be attached with acrylic cement which
will fuse the pieces to the base.

You can contact Kay directly with her email above or by calling 562 307-4171.

She also did a great job Laser engraving a replacement plaque for my document
number.

Well, I've got what I consider a reasonable quote for the nameplates. I can
supply them in black UV resistant polycarbonate for $75 each side plus
shipping.. That includes everything including the NRE (non-recurring
engineering charges). The NRE is basically CAM charges). I need to know who
is interested. I suspect I can have them in about a week. If there are
similar nameplates for other C models, I can entertain getting them as well.
I don't know if I can get them in stainless steel, but if possible it will be
quite a bit more expensive because of the small radii of some of the cuts. A
1/16" cutter moves very slow in stainless
So let me know if you are interested.

2016 River City C Owners Regatta Announcement, Youngstown NY:

The rumors are true, the First (and hopefully annual!) International River City
C Owners' Regatta will be held in Youngstown on August 12-14, 2016.

Racing will be on Lake Ontario off Youngstown, so winds shouldn't be quite as
fickle as the Humber Bay breezes many of us had been accustomed to in past
years, when this great tradition was held annually over in Toronto.

The format will include racing Saturday and Sunday, with awards thereafter. At
the Clubhouse, we will have drink specials all weekend, with live band and
party Saturday evening, open to all Club members.

A Continental breakfast will be offered on Saturday & Sunday mornings to get
the sailors started.

Come for a fun weekend of racing & partying and help us celebrate the
resurrection of this once and future great regatta!

Re: Stus-List Masthead surprise!

2016-04-26 Thread Randy Stafford via CnC-List
Apparently bees and wasps like to sail :)

I had dirt dauber nests at the *bottom* of my mast, I discovered. And also in a
place or two up under the deck / hull joint. And bee honeycombs in my trailer
taillights.

It appears dirt daubers' range is throughout North America. My boat was in an
arid high desert climate the last four years (before it was mine), which is
probably where it picked up those nests.

Cheers,
Randy

Subject: Stus-List Masthead surprise!

I was aloft putting a Windex light on Touche' today. I drilled a hole in the
side of the mast about 4 inches below the masthead to drop the power cable.
When the drill burst through, a lot of dust and dirt came out.

A bit of exploring and digging with a screwdriver revealed a bunch of dried
mud. Since to my knowledge, nobody has ever buried Touche's mast in the bottom
of Lake Pontchartrain, I decided on a different scenario. I guess a bunch of
dirt daubers had filled the top 4-5 inches of the mast with mud nests. Had to
dig under the hole with Special Tool WCH (wire coat hanger) to clear a path to
drop the messenger line.

Couldn't help but think about all the racers (including me) who try to minimize
weight aloft only to have a bunch of pesky insects negate some of your efforts.
:)

BTW, we broke the messenger line so we'll give it another try Wednesday. That
was a first.
