Used the acetone and then  polished it out. It worked great. Any idea for the

Stus-List C Northeast Rendezvous Recap

2017-09-10 Thread Edd Schillay via CnC-List
Listers,

Greetings from Branford, CT, just shy of 40 miles away from Greenport, the
location of our C Northeast Rendezvous.

Though big Westerly winds (and waves) kept some from attending, the presence of
Hanuman, Harbor Lights, Aries, Hideaway, the Enterprise and, from as far away
as Maryland, the owners of Sea Hawk, made for another spectacular event.

Great food, great friends, great stories and great booze running from rum, dark
n stormies, moonshine, beers, scotch, cheap wine, reportedly expensive wine,
and, yes, Romulan Ale (illegal, but we were 100 miles from Federation space).

The C boat show (informal tours of attendees' boats) was very well attended,
and both interesting and informative. The Sunday 6:30am calisthenics? Not so
much. Especially after burning the midnight oil having C's (cocktails and
cigars) on our C's.

The days went by too quickly and it wasn't long before a major announcement had
to be made:

Announcing the 2018 C Northeast Rendezvous in Port Jefferson! Stay tuned for
details as they are formed.

Thanks to all for a fantastic ultra-memorable weekend.

All the best,

Edd

I just measured my fuel tank.27" wide, 16" deep, 12" height+7"
top clearance to the cockpit solenot the easiest to access to remove
it but doable with some four letter words and beers. Need to ensure
the in fill on the tank has a 90 deg. intake to make connecting the in hose
easy, maybe simply doable!

I like the idea of the Moeller tanks that are transparent.not just to
determine the fuel level but possibly seeing anything in the tank.
Someone here , maybe Dennis, earlier gave me a Moeller 19 gallon part
#. The hunt is now on.

The position Bill is in now is just the position I stated the other day I
did not want to be inreplaced the fuel tank because it is now, or near
now, that the tank will need to be replaced.

Good luck to you Billlet us know how you fair out.what tank you
acquire.

Look at the Moeller web site, they have a huge collection of tanks. I seem
to remember there is one which had an angled in fill on a corner which was a
little big for my boat, but may fit yours.

There is also a site called "fuel hoses" or similar with all sorts of
fittings including elbows - it may be "fuel hose elbows". Google gave it to
me. As they are the same size as the hose, you need a little nipple.

I'm trying to remember there I bought my last one. I think it was either
Canadian Tire or Princess Auto. I bought the cheap ones and they don't last
long. Although the one I bought I consider it cheap as it was in the 20-25
dollar range.

I think this is the one I've had for a few years.

Check the hull number, it will be on the transom, and in the aft cabin

The last few digits show the hull number, it'll be between 140?-175.

Re: Stus-List Question about awlgrip hull pain

2017-09-10 Thread Dave Godwin via CnC-List
I used Awlcraft 2000 for the hull and the decks. I had already decided to use
it after talking to the Alexseal rep (good stuff, same as Awlcraft 2000) and
when conferring with my painter he said that that was they only shot Awlcraft
on new builds and repairs. Another former professional painter from Zimmerman
Marine preferred it.

I’ve been able do some buffing of areas with a bit of orange peel.
Repairability was tops on my list both because I was going to be doing the
painting and because I run into things. Often...

As far as it not being as “beautiful” as Awlgrip, well, I’m fairly certain that
no-one can tell the difference between well-done Awlcraft and Awlgrip. Maybe a
professional.

Re: Stus-List Fuel tank replacement 35-1

2017-09-10 Thread Joe Della Barba via CnC-List
I have replaced my fuel tank. It is pretty easy, it comes right out once you
empty all the stuff out of the locker.
WARNING:

The original fuel tank in the MK I is ternplate and it WILL leak sooner or
later.

The original fill and vent hoses are NOT ethanol rated and will dissolve from
the inside out, dropping rubber pieces into the tank.

The 90 degree rubber elbow thing is NOT fuel rated and will come apart sooner
or later. Mine spilt while fueling and dumped 5 gallons into the bilge. I got a
new one fabricated from aluminum at my local welding shop.

A C 35 MK I exploded and burned after refueling and I will bet anything it
was the rubber elbow. I would have too if I hadn’t caught it with the blower.

The supply hose is likewise not ethanol rated. If you still have copper line,
that is no longer used, it eventually cracks.

Really nothing but the filler should be original and I got a new cap for that
because the old O-ring was not sealing.

I think my tank now is this one – been awhile since I bought it.

I have a Plastimo (black) but would rather have a Moeller (translucent) because
you can see the fuel level. Not sure about your configuration but you should
be able to find a close fit.

The concern is the elbow on the fill hose. If you damage it, replacement may
be difficult. Gates makes an elbow that can be cut to fit but you may need a
coupling or nipple to make it work.

If your fill hose is original, I STRONGLY suggest you replace it. It is well

Getting it out was not too difficult, the tank fits out through the lazarette

and vent connections, had to get to them through the panel at the aft end of
the port quarter berth.

As someone mentioned in a recent post, getting the fill hose back on was a
pain. If I recall there's an elbow just off the tank connection, little bit of
a struggle to make it tight. I used fabric straps to hold the new plastic tank
down. My tank gauge has never worked so I just look through the wall of the
tank to see the level.

Re: Stus-List Fuel tank replacement 35-1

2017-09-10 Thread William Walker via CnC-List
All this talk about leaking tanks caused mine to spring a leak on
Fridayreally.
Wish the access on my 36 was as good as others seem to have. Espar furnace and
refrigeration complicate things for me.
Dennis, what tank do you recommend? Good website for fitting install in
plastic? Or do the come ready to go?

The concern is the elbow on the fill hose.  If you damage it, replacement may
be difficult.  Gates makes an elbow that can be cut to fit but you may need a
coupling or nipple to make it work.

If your fill hose is original, I STRONGLY suggest you replace it.  It is well
past its useful life.

Hervey,

Getting it out was not too difficult,  the tank fits out through the lazarette
under the starboard seat.  My tank was held in place by two galvanized steel
straps, corrosion from which caused the leak. Hardest part was undoing the fill
and vent connections, had to get to them through the panel at the aft end of
the port quarter berth.

Re: Stus-List Question about awlgrip hull pain

2017-09-10 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
Awlgrip is the original paint which is beautiful because it has a color and
clear coat in the same application. The color settles and the clear comes
to the surface. This makes for the brilliant, long lasting shine. The
problem comes when repairs are required. In order to repair a damaged area
the border between old and nem needs to be feathered in. This creates a
halo around the damaged area and is caused by the separate layers of clear
and color. The company insists that only their soap is formulated to
prevent damaging the finish. They also insist that any amount of
polishing/buffing/sanding/or waxing will cause damage to the paint,
subsequently hold dirt and look dull.

Awlgrip has come out with a newer product called Awlgrip 2000 and it
doesn't have the separate clear and color parts. It isn't quite as
beautiful when new but it is easier to repair. I'm not sure about
polishing.

There is a second company which was recommended to me by a boat yard called
Alex Seal. They said that it looks and works almost exactly like Awlgrip
2000 but is cheaper. They pointed to what looked like a new travel lift
and said they had rebuilt it 5 years ago and that it was a 20 year old lift.

Re: Stus-List Fuel filter funnel search

2017-09-10 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
You have to remember that the modern filter funnels don't just allow water
to "drop out". The filters actually have a hydrophobic coating (green on
mine) which prevents water from passing based on water's surface tension.
2 different demonstrations can show this.

The first is where water is used to fill the funnel halfway up the filter -
no water exits. Then diesel is added to the funnel - diesel flows freely
until fuel can be seen on the surface of the water.

The second is where perfectly measured equal portions (about a pint) of
water and diesel are mixed by shaking in a small container. This mixture
is the added to the funnel and low and behold nothing but pure diesel fuel
exits the funnel, again leaving behind water with no detectable diesel in
the funnel.

It's actually a pretty cool demonstration which I've seen at the boat
shows. You might be able to find a similar demo on YouTube. Something
that the instructions mention is testing the filters from time to time by
pouring water in to ensure that it doesn't leak out. The instructions also
suggest that you can do that "test" prior to each use and then leave that
water in while filling with diesel. Once done adding diesel, you'll be
left with only water - that which you added plus any that was removed from
the fuel.

Since the filter has the hydrophobic coating you need to be careful not to
damage the coating while cleaning/drying the funnel.
