Folding Prop I replaced the original folding prop with a Flex-o-fold and have been very happy with it. Now 5+ years old it still looks new after scraping off the summer crud. Stus-List abrasion on halyard
Message: 6 Date: Mon, 5 Nov 2018 07:57:36 -0500 From: David Knecht To: CnC CnC discussion list Subject: Stus-List 34+ genoa halyard Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8" Several years ago, I replace the wire/rope genoa halyard on my 34+ with 3/8? Maxbraid. Every year since, the casing of the Maxbraid has been worn through by the end of the season. I rarely lower the sail so don?t konw how fast it is happening. I have not worried too much about it as the inner casing seems fine, but clearly there is a problem. I have had not had the mast down since I bought the boat, but two riggers have gone up and looked at it and neither could figure out what the problem was. Neither thought the sheave was the issue, but the place where the wear is occuring is about 8? above the furler swivel and roughly where the halyard enters the mast. Has anyone else had a problem like this and found a solution? Thanks- Dave S/V Aries 1990 C 34+ New London, CT Dave, 2 things to explore. There is often abrasion between the spinnaker halyard and the jib halyard, especially if the spinnaker halyard is not led forward and secured on the bow rail. Whichever line is softer will show wear. The other is that it is sometimes necessary to swap out the sheave as it has a groove meant for the wire portion of the halyard. Stus-List Cutlass bearing
Looking to replace the cutlass bearing on my 1985 35 mk3. Any info would be helpful. Does the rudder have to be removed or will the shaft slide by it? Is there a special tool for removing it without removing the shaft? Thanks Gerry Fennessey Fianna Gerry, I had my cutlass bearing replaced a few seasons ago. I had to remove the prop and the marina had a special tool that pressed out the old bearing and then pressed in a new one without having to remove the shaft. The answer is yes, such a tool does exist. Ask around and hopefully you will be able to find a marina who has the tool. It makes life much easier. Stus-List 1. Colregs question for boats not in an organized race
1. Colregs question for boats not in an organized race If the boats were racing, there would be preparation in the skippers minds for such a situation and it would not cause undue anxiety. I do not think this can be settled by the COlregs, but, instead by the rules of common sense (which might not always be too common). It is just bad form to do something that is going to scare or cause distress in another boater. Good manners dictates that you do not pass so close to a non-racing boat that it causes the boat, especially if on starboard, to alter course. If they were too close to shout a hail that the intention was to pass astern and that no course alteration was needed, that_might_ have been OK, otherwise, not OK Howard Paul, SKipper Knot Again 35-3 ___ Thanks everyone for supporting this list with your contributions. Stus-List Insurance issues
Insurance experience My C 35-3 has been insured by Allstate for the last 25 years and I have experience with 3 major claims. Once, while transiting Plum Gut with my son at the helm, doing about 8 kts with the big chute up, we hit an unseen, underground spire submerged 6' below the surface. 20k later Allstate covered all but the 500 deductible and there was no increase in rate which has held at about 5-600 with an insured value of 60k + 6k for "accessories" for the duration of coverage. About 10-15 years ago, the boat, during a storm, was blown off its jack stands when the cover caught one of the stands causing hull and rigging damage. some 20+k later, Allstate handled the claim speedily and without premium increase. The boat was totaled in Super Storm Sandy. After a 45K payout, Allstate gave me the boat along with the check. I used the $ to rebuild the boat and she is as good as or better now than new. There has been no real increase in premium. I can only praise Allstate in that they are 1/2 the cost of Boat US, have been easy to work with and have stuck with me through 3 major incidents. Stus-List Yanmar 3gm oil leak
Hello All, For the last few years, I had a significant loss of oil whenever I ran the engine for more than a few minutes. During 1 run through Hell's Gate back to home waters in Raritan Bay, the oil light and buzzer sounded (naturally at the worst time). We hoisted the sails and sailed down the East River - not recommended! When in Raritan Bay the wind died, I got a tow from SeaTow back to the mooring. This convinced me to rebuild the engine over last winter, however, after a great deal of trouble shooting and having multiple eyes look at the situation, we noticed that the bulk of the oil was accumulating on the side of the engine with the dip stick. The dip stick slid in easily. Further exploration led to the conclusion that the source of the oil leak was, in fact, the dip stick. Finding a new replacement for an old 3GM was a task as all the dealers said none were available. An old salty engine repair man I met at the Annapolis boat show told me he could get one. He did. I now have a tight seal and no oil leak! If you have an old Yanmar and it has a mystery leak, check your dipstick for proper fit. I replaced the Martec on my 35-3 many years ago with a Flex-0-Fold 2 blade. Absolutely no complaints drives the boat very well. Stus-List 3GMD
Hello All, Now that the boat (35-3) is on the hard, I was able to clean the engine and try to locate the source of my oil leak(s). It appears that the culprit is the dipstick! The rubber seal no longer is able to stay in place, rises up and allows oil out of the crankcase when under power. The local parts shop says the oil dip stick is out of stock and not available. Schillay Starship Enterprise CC 37+ | NCC-1701-B City Island, NY Ed, A few years ago, I changed over to 2 6 V cart batteries. .Bought them at AutoZone on sale. Cost less than $150.00 for the pair. They are going on to their 4th season and show no sign of deterioration. They are more than adequate to run the boat + fridge with minimal engine run time. I also have an 80 Watt solar panel which helps as it puts out 2-2.5 amps on a good day. I leave the solar panel hooked up over the winter and the batteries are always full. This was my first season with Celtic Fire a C C 35' MK III sailing on Lake Ontario. I have a folding prop Prop (Flexofold 2 blade 16 R). That does not open up all the way when the boat is moving, when this happens it creates a lot of vibration. This problem does not happen when I leave the dock and start from a standing still. I wonder if anyone else has experienced a similar problem and found a solution. Cheers, Brian Brian, I have the same boat (35-3)and the same prop. I rarely encoun ter the problem, however increasing revs briefly always solves the issue and is softer on the drive train than momentary reverse and then forward.
