Re: Stus-List Covid 19 update MD & USVI

2020-03-26 Thread Kevin Driscoll via CnC-List
37,858 cases and 387 dead in New York City as of today 3/26/2020. The death
rate will climb dramatically this week as the worst effects of the virus
are said to present themselves around 10 days+ after infection. The results
of NYC testing for Covid-19 are 28% of those tested are positive vs 8%
positive for the national average suggesting that the number of cases will
continue to climb rapidly for some time. The United States now has 81,578
cases diagnosed, more than any other country in the world as I understand
it. Given that I expect many on this list are in the vulnerable age range,
I would suggest to err on the side of safety where at all possible.
Stay healthy and sail fast!

They didn't close all the hotels and motels on the motorways.

By Samuel Volkin / Published March 20

According to a recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine,
SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, can live in the air and on surfaces
between several hours and several days. The study found that the virus is
viable for up to 72 hours on plastics, 48 hours on stainless steel, 24 hours on
cardboard, and 4 hours on copper. It is also detectable in the air for three
hours.

Carolyn Machamer, a professor of cell biology whose lab at the Johns Hopkins
School of Medicine has studied the basic biology of coronaviruses for years,
joined Johns Hopkins MPH/MBA candidate Samuel Volkin for a brief discussion of
these findings and what they mean for efforts to protect against spread of the
virus. The conversation has been edited for length and clarity.

Volkin: According to this report, it sounds like the COVID-19 virus is
potentially living on surfaces for days. How worried should we be about our
risk of becoming infected simply by touching something an infected person was
in contact with days ago?

Machamer: What's getting a lot of press and is presented out of context is that
the virus can last on plastic for 72 hours—which sounds really scary. But
what's more important is the amount of the virus that remains. It's less than
0.1% of the starting virus material. Infection is theoretically possible but
unlikely at the levels remaining after a few days. People need to know this.

The underlying question I guess is, if you find the RNA, is it still viable,
i.e, can you contract the disease from it?

I consider the study released by the NE Journal of Medicine to be as
authoritative as any, and they indicate viable virus could be detected on
stainless for about 72 hours, though the virus titer was greatly reduced over
that time.

There are some additional studies out there, but I'm not seeing much in the way
of conflicting information.

All the marinas in Kent County Maryland (Rock Hall, Tolchester, Worton Creek,
etc.) are closed for boat owners. The county instruction allow them to staff
with their own people if the maintain “social distancing”. So in at least some
cases you can’t work on your own boat but can pay them to do work.

USVI is closed to visitors too.

They shouldn't be banning people from their boat's.  Owners should go on their
boat's anyway.   Closing the stores and community areas is understandable.
I'm up in Portland, CT and there is still access as far as I know.

That is not the only absurd aspect of the response to Covid 19. You can’t
access your boat nor can I go into my University office, which in both cases
there is no contact with other people. But I can go to the hardware store or
grocery store where you can’t help but encounter other people. That is the
situation in CT, anyway. Not logical or based on any science. Dave

The good news is my marina isn't exactly secure, so it isn't like I won't be
able to get there anyway.
Between this and barring access to second homes, I have some issues with a
constructive taking of property. I get not infecting people, but I don't get
within 50 feet of any other person at the marina.
Also, if my boat is damaged due to lack of maintenance in some way, who is on
the hook for that?
Does the marina still expect to get paid?
