Graham,

Phil Washhe has a J120 called Philharmonic about 7 slips to the
east of mine at the club.  Phil is a retired machinist who has a
complete machine shop in his basement at home.

I was trying for some time to remove the two seized SS stanchion
screws/bolts with a Mastercraft Impact Driver. I was even hitting
the outside one with a 5 lb. mallno luck.

Phil was walking from his boat, stopped, asked what was going on. He
looked at the Mastercraft tool, said it was a piece of junk...said he
would bring me one the next day that would do the job with a regular
hammer..it was his Snap On Impact Driver.he was rightgot
both the inside and outside seized screws/bolts loose.

He said even though I got the screws/bolts out of the stanchion, I
would have a hard time separating the stanchion from its base. So he
said take the stanchion base/stanchion off the boat and give it to him.

Three days later the repaired unit was waiting for me in my cockpit.
He also replaced the two SS screws/bolts, one that holds the stanchion
in the base and the inside one that holds the base to the toerail.
He gave me back the bottom 8 inches of the bent old stanchion where
you could easy see the corrosion where it was also seized in the base.

Make sure to seal the threads FULLY with loctite or antiseize (choose your
antiseize wisely here..) when reassembling.

Also be sure the new screws are 316ss, lots of poor quality 'stainless'
hardware out there. Go to your local ace hardware or similar, 18-8 is not
suitable in a marine environment IMO.

I often find that many applications of penetrating oil may be necessary
where corrosion has inhabited threaded products. I try to use a hook/pick
to remove any visible corrosion to help penetration of oil.

Heat is often an option for me. I have a battery powered heat gun that has
a 'concentrator' tip- the flip side of this is using compressed air in a
can- super cold on the bolt to shrink it a bit. Remember that heat
"expanding" makes everything tighter (but might break bonds of corrosion),
you need the male component to be smaller.

Try using an lithium impact wrench / gun. Not to be confused with an impact
drill. The kind the garage uses to remove the lug nuts on your car rims.

I’ve used mine on several occasions and it made quick work of seized SS screws.

Believe they can be rented as well.

How long did you leave the PB Blaster before trying?  A mechanic once told me
that when changing hub assemblies they put vehicle on hoist and spray the areas
last thing before going home for the night and then work on it the next
morning.  Having replaced right and left front wheel hubs on my former
Silverado using that method on one side and not waiting many hours on the other
I can attest to this trick being helpful.

I've had good luck with a hand impact driver. Just be sure you hold it tight
to the screw head while you whack it or you'll mess up the screw head.

Used to work on motorcycles a lot. Hand impact driver was my best friend.

Hi Rob,

It is best to heed the advice of Dennis.

Use a hand impact driver to get it loose. Then
maybe hit it with one of the recommended electric tools just for fun.

If you strip the head then the only option is a
nice bit o' drilling. Which isn't all that bad
since you will have a nice little pilot "dish".
And drill at or just slightly less than shank diameter so you can re-tap.

Cheers, Russ

Absolutely worth buying an impact driver. I have a little Makita portable and
I use it all the time as an electric screwdriver and impact driver. It is
especially good with stuck stainless screws in aluminum that I thought would be
impossible to loosen. Has rarely failed where a standard driver would ruin the
slots. Dave
