[cobirds] Piratic Flycatcher in KS today

[cobirds] Huerfano County Update: Northern Parula!
We decided to brave the quickly deteriorating weather and take a walk up by Daigre Lake Wildlife Area. We had FOS Warbling Vireo and Wilson's Warblers. Yellow-breasted Chats and Common Yellowthroat were calling Violet-green, Tree, and Northern Rough-winged Swallows were about White-crowned and Chipping Sparrows were flitting around A Western Tanager paused by the lake, a Yellow Warbler joined him, briefly, on the same branch! We were beginning to succumb to Yellow-rumped Warbler fatigue when we saw spotted among them a lovely breeding male Northern Parula! He stopped just long enough to give us a crippling views of his broken eyering, yellow lower mandible, yellow throat, black and rufous breast band and rufous along his flanks. Best of all he was at eye level and quite close! Beautiful little bird...if only he had stayed long enough to be photographed! [cobirds] Larimer/Weld County wandering
COBirds, Wandered a bit through Larimer County (and a few meters into Weld Co.) this afternoon from about noon to 5pm enjoying the birds and spring rain. 98% of birding was done from inside the car, considering the rainy, chilly, and at times, windy conditions. Forgot it was the official big day date, else maybe I would have gotten started earlier and planned the day better. Maybe not though, crappy weather. Started off scanning Duck Lake (according to google maps), south side of CR 32 near the southwest corner of Fossil Creek Reservoir. This little pond has been quite birdy lately. Lots of Ruddy Ducks, Shovelers, two pairs of Eared Grebes, some gulls, some distant flyby shorebirds, etc. Then off to Timnath Reservoir, but on the way I had to stop and scan the cattail marsh at the NE corner of CR 13 and CR 78 (across the county line into WELD), which was full of screeching Red-winged and Yellow-headed Blackbirds, at least a couple Great-tailed Grackles, calling Virginia Rail(s), and a Black-necked Stilt. Timnath Res. had a few ducks at the marshy eastern edge, including the day's only Ring-necked Ducks. Lark Sparrows were feeding in the main parking lot, with one alternate Horned Grebe and thousands of swallows (Barn, Tree, Cliff, Violet-green at least) fighting the wind inches over the water. A couple Lark Buntings flushed on the drive out. Without having much of a plan, I headed back to town and then north on Hwy 1/Terry Lake Road/CR 15 in hopes of flooded fields full of birds. Well it sure ain't Texas, but I did have a very pleasant and birdy drive north towards Wyoming. Best birding was along CR 15 between Douglas Reservoir and Soapstone Prairie Natural Area, as there is more unplowed natural grassland along this stretch. Soapstone Prairie is temporarily closed so I had to turn around, but drove nice and slow as the area hosted Sage Thrasher, Cassin's Kingbirds, dozens of Spizellas (good mix of Chipping, Brewer's, Clay-colored), a couple Lark Buntings and Vesper Sparrows, and at least 8 (!) Loggerhead Shrikes. Ended the day with just over 60 species, with a boatload of notable misses, having not walked any wooded areas or foothills. Not a single crow or raven all day, not a single warbler, etc etc. Still a great day of spring birding!!! Also one Black-tailed Jackrabbit and one big 'ol buck Pronghorn Antelope just south of the Soapstone Prairie locked gate. [cobirds] A few birds from today, JeffCo 5/9
I was not able to spend much time out, but a stop at Hildebrand Ranch had a *Cassin's Kingbird* and my first *Olive-sided Flycatcher* and *Western Wood-Pewee* of the season. There were two *Lark Buntings*, and some of the usual migrant sparrows were numerous. Later, back home, a male *Lazuli Bunting* showed up at me feeder at dusk, vying for space with some truly gold *American Goldfinches*. Very pretty in the falling snow, but for a sense of their desperation. A flock of 4 *Evening Grosbeaks* went over my home earlier in the day. No doubt they are much more at home in the snow tonight than a bunting. David Suddjian Littleton, CO -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Harris' Sparrow-Dolores County
Greetings from SW CO! Chris Schulz and I spotted an adult Harris's Sparrow at Bradfield Bridge this morning. Bird was observed for an hour in the Box Elder trees in the turn around on the west side of the bridge. It was traveling with a group of a half dozen White-crowned Sparrows. We were guiding a tour for the Ute Mountain/Mesa Verde Bird Festival and could not report until now due to our tour obligations. [cobirds] Chatfield SP, Curlews continue, swallows galore etc
All, I stopped at Chatfield state park (Douglas co) and relocated the two long-billed curlews Doug Kibbe reported earlier in the prairie dog town by the east entrance in the pouring rain about 4pm. About 315 (in light rain) I birded the swim beach area (Jeff Co) which is pretty much under water. Thousands of swallows with the majority being Violet-green (800+), hundreds of Trees and a smattering of bank, barn and cliff mixed in (many perched in trees over the lake). Couldn't pull out a rough-winged. A pair of American avocets were wading where the beach usually is. I also had at least 46 Lark Sparrows in the parking lot. A couple yellow-headed blackbirds were among the red-wings just north of the beach. A few blue-winged teal flew by about the time I started getting drenched. At the model airplane field (back in Douglas co) I saw one vesper and 9 lark sparrows and a male lark bunting hanging out near the pavilion and out of the pouring rain. Lots of other birds flying around that I couldn't identify thru wet windows. Could be fun birding if we get a bunch of snow, but it'll be rough on the swallows! Great rainy birding! [cobirds] Gilpin County loon
The storm brought some migrants down in Gilpin County today. At Chase Gulch Reservoir, there was a Common Loon on the water and at least 100 swallows just above the water. [cobirds] Prowers and Baca Birding on Saturday May 9
The CFO SE Colorado Birding tour continued today with a primary focus on two areas-Lamar Community College Woods and Picture Canyon. At LCCW (Prowers) we waited out morning rain until past 7:30 before we began to bird the woods from south to north. Immediately upon enter the woods we heard a Solitary Vireo-type song that was rougher around the edges. We found the bird foraging in one of the elms and identified it as a Yellow-throated Vireo. Nearby we found a juv. Broad-winged Hawk. Later we had perched and flyovers of Mississippi Kites, Red-headed Woodpeckers in a nest cavity Warblers found included Black-throated Blue Warbler, Orange Crowned, Northern Waterthrush and Yellow-breasted Chat. It took us a while to get to Picture Canyon (Baca), but it was worth it. For the second year in a row on this trip we found a territorial pair of Painted Buntings. The birds were just north of the fenced enclosure on the east side of the canyon wall. What can be as spectacular, or almost as spectacular as a Painted Bunting? Well, how about a Prothonotory Warbler? We had one of those too, It was feeding in the two small ponds along the cliff. Other birds in the area included Burrowing Owl, Orchard Oriole and Northern Bobwhite. [cobirds] Prowers, Bent and Otero counties Sat, May 9
My group of 5 spent the global eBird birdathon (May 9) along the Arkansas River Valley from Holly to La Junta. We started by driving roads south of Holly in search of Lesser Prairie Chicken, thinking it might be an important tick for the Global Big Day effort. However, the weather was uncooperative and muddy roads forced a retreat from our initial destination of Baca County. Instead we birded at Lamar Community College grove, john Martin Reservoir/Hasty Campground and Lake Cheraw. Highlights were: LCC grove (Prowers)- At least 10 species of warbler including Nashville, Black-throated Gray, Black-throated Blue, northern Parula, Northern Waterthrush (More than 50 species observed here mid-morning). Hasty Compround (early afternoon, Bent County)- Eastern Bluebird family, Canyon Towhee singing, Summer Tanager, Cape May Warbler, American Redstart, female Scott's Oriole. [cobirds] SE Colorado field trip for CFO
Friday marked the start of the CFO's long weekend to SE Colorado. We headed out is cold, wind and rain, and kept in it most of the day, although we managed to dodge most big storms. Last Chance (Washington) produced a single Northern Waterthrush plus common migrants like Green-tailed Towhee. In Hugo (Lincoln) for lunch we has a Broad-winged Hawk. When word arrived of Duane Nelson's observations at Temple Grove, we hightailed it on to Bent County. There we joined Duane but dipped his Mourning Warbler. Nevertheless we were able to find Northern Waterthrush, Ovenbird, American Redstart, Black and White Warbler, Hooded Warbler and Summer Tanager along with three Harris's Sparrows and two White-throated Sparrows and a possible Golden-crowned Sparrow. RE: [cobirds] Chestnut-sided ??
Mark et al, I guess I would agree with the suggestion by Glenn and maybe others that this bird appears to have some Bay-breasted in it. Definitely has Chestnut-sided in it, too. Very interesting bird. Thanks for sharing. Dave Date: Sat, 9 May 2015 00:12:15 + From: markcha...@comcast.net To: cobirds@googlegroups.com Subject: [cobirds] Chestnut-sided ?? Re: [cobirds] Scissor-tailed Flycatcher--Arapahoe Co
The Scissor-tailed Flycatcher continues at Cherry Creek State Park. Just before noon it was foraging near the main road around the park, south of the Historic Spot where the Pope visited. Watch for the cluster of excited birders to hone in on its location. Cassin's Kingbirds continue and this is a good place to compare them to Western Kingbirds. Thanks to Mary Driscoll and others who have reported updates.
