[cobirds] Windsor Lake (Weld) on 5/2/22

2022-05-02 Thread DAVID A LEATHERMAN
I birded Windsor Lake for 3 hours plus today, mostly hiding behind a pole near
the swim beach to escape the wind watching and photographing gulls and terns
and eventually did a lap. Once comfortably numb it wasn't too bad. Amazing
disappearance of the big merganser flock. Still 150 or so western grebes plus
one Clark's. 35 Bonaparte's gulls tripped the ebird filter for some reason.
Two Caspian terns worked the shoreline but never landed that I could see. At
least 4 Forster's terns tried to fish and then avoid the bully gulls. Did not
see the diversity or numbers of shorebirds I sort of expected. A few Wilson's
phalaropes, a couple willets, a couple avocets, one killdeer, that's it.
Hundreds of swallows on the lake, almost all cliff and barn. Heard my FOY
clay-colored sparrow amid the houses on the south side. No Yucatan vireo.
Enjoyed watching a northern rough-winged swallow gather bits of dry grass for
nest liner and make runs back and forth to its burrow in a ditch bank northeast
of the reservoir. 52 species total plus an unidentified accipiter, probably a
Cooper's. eBird checklist link below:

[cobirds] Weld County Birds

2022-05-02 Thread KELLY ORMESHER
Hi All,

Today I headed out to Weld County on a rainy/snowy and windy day. In one week,
there's a noticeable increase in birds. The Lark Buntings, Lark Sparrows, and
Bullock's Orioles have returned. Interestingly, as I drove a stretch along
CR89, I noticed three Swainson's Hawks in less than 1/4 mile that were all
standing on the ground, tucked in behind yucca plants getting some protection
from the wind and rain.

At Crow Valley, I encountered an Ash-throated Flycatcher along Crow Creek south
of the group picnic area. I also found a Least Flycatcher in the Yellow Current
shrubs along with three Blue-gray Gnatcatchers. An Eastern Bluebird has
returned along with a Brown Thrasher.

Norma's Grove had at least seven Swainson's Thrushes and a great variety of
sparrows.

Happy birding,
Kelly Ormesher

Re: [cobirds] Pelican Mortality at Union Res (Boulder Co.)

2022-05-02 Thread Amy C
A friend just texted me a picture of a dead pelican she found at Cherry
Creek State Park. It did not appear to have any injuries. She reported it
to the park office so hopefully they will act quickly to remove the animal
so scavengers don't get to it and pass illness along the food chain
(assuming the bird died of something contagious). My friend kayaks almost
daily at CCSP and I'm sure she'll let me know of any other birds she finds.

Really hoping this isn't the start of a tragic summer.

[cobirds] Shorebirdy day at Chatfield and Hine Lake

2022-05-02 Thread David Suddjian
Cold and breezy and wet! But It was a fun shorebird day, aided by the
weather. I observed 19 species of shorebirds at Chatfield SP and at Hine
Lake in Robert A. Easton Regional Park, JeffCo. Both locations seemed to
have birds coming and going during the light rain, and then going or
staying when the rain lifted out. The full list of shorebirds is below.
Also lots of teal today, with 338 Blue-winged leading the way from my
checklists.

4 Black-necked Stilt
19 American Avocet
5 Semipalmated Plover
8 Killdeer
1 Whimbrel
9 Marbled Godwit - west of Kingfisher
1 Sanderling - Hine Lake
30 Least Sandpiper
1 Pectoral Sandpiper west of Kingfisher
11 Semipalmated Sandpiper
2 Western Sandpiper - Chatfield Marina Sandspit and Hine L
14 peep sp.
7 Long-billed Dowitcher
1 Wilson's Snipe
36 Wilson's Phalarope
12 Spotted Sandpiper
1 Solitary Sandpiper - Marina Sandspit
17 Greater Yellowlegs
55 Willet - west of Kingfisher and Marina Sandspit
16 Lesser Yellowlegs

A female Chestnut-sided Warbler was at Robert A. Easton.

[cobirds] Re: Lazuli Bunting - Dougla

2022-05-02 Thread Randy Fischer
Yes, they're back! One showed up at our backyard feeder in southwest Fort
Collins last evening around 6:30 pm. It paid a brief visit, again, this
morning and, apparently, left town. Also, a wave of Bullocks' Orioles came
through the Dixon Reservoir hot spot in west Fort Collins this morning.
Such brilliant spring plumage! Randy Fischer

[cobirds] HUDSONIAN GODWIT, Lagerman Reservoir, Boulder County

2022-05-02 Thread Peter Burke
COBirders,
This weather system brought in some good birds at Lagerman Reservoir, first
spotted, I believe, by Eric DeFonso, including a breeding plumaged
Hudsonian Godwit. Also present were a Marbled Godwit, Whimbrel, 50+
Wilson's Phalarope, 50+ American Avocet, a dozen or so Long-billed
Dowitchers and a smattering of other shorebirds and peeps, most if not all
Least Sandpipers. The scene turned hectic when a Peregrine Falcon showed up
for a snack, putting the shorebirds along with 100+ Franklin's Gulls and
many ducks into frenzied flight.

Good birding,

Peter Burke, Boulder County, CO

[cobirds] Bent County birds, 5/2/2022

2022-05-02 Thread 'DUANE NELSON' via Colorado Birds
Birders,

On a blustery day with north winds reaching 40 mph, I ventured to John Martin
State Park to buy an annual State Parks Pass. I dared to get out of my car in
the Hasty Campground. It was worth it, despite having to wear a winter parka
and hat.

Near Campsite 79, I had a singing male Northern Parula, a male Black-and-White
Warbler, a male Blackpoll Warbler, and a singing Plumbeous Vireo. On the gravel
under the slide in the playground, I photographed an Ovenbird. I undoubtedly
missed some birds due to the howling wind and cold.

At Van's Grove, I had another Northern Parula, this time a female. There are
numerous closures due to fires, but I saw my third Northern Parula of the day
on the east side of Bent County Road 16 just east of the closed Ft. Lyon
Wildlife Easement.

Respectfully,

Duane Nelson
