[cobirds] County lists update
COBirders, Happy Thanksgiving! Please send me your updated county checklist by December 1st. I apologize for the long delay in getting an update done. I just want lifetime updates this month. I will update horizontal lists next month. I also will be sending out an email sometime next month with information on some new forms to use. There is going to be a category dropped, East of the Divide Year List as it just has had very little interest and it will be replaced with # of species photographed in CO (all time, this will not be by year). So for those of you who are interested you may want to start figuring this number out. It will be on the first 2010 update. - Mark Peterson Colorado Springs -- Colorado Field Ornithologists: http://www.cfo-link.org/ Colorado County Birding: http://www.coloradocountybirding.com/ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] El Paso County --- White-winged Scoter
COBirders, I made a stop at Big Johnson reservoir tonight near dusk to check out the gulls and anything else that might have shown up recently. Shortly after getting there an immature White-winged Scoter appeared. I was able to call John Drummond, who had just left and he was able to also see the bird. But, in typical fashion at this reservoir, it took us about 10 minutes to relocate the bird. Other birds of note to me were at least four Common Loons and one Lesser Black-backed Gull (3rd or 4th cycle bird). By the time I left there were approximately 2000 gulls. They were still coming in when it was almost too dark to see them. Also, I have had as many as seven White-winged Doves at my feeders this month but the past few days I have only seen one. - Mark Peterson Colorado Springs -- Colorado Field Ornithologists: http://www.cfo-link.org/ Colorado County Birding: http://www.coloradocountybirding.com/ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] El Paso County --- gulls and loons
COBirders, Late this evening a buddy of mine and I stopped by Big Johnson reservoir to check out the gulls. Brad Steger had seen a couple of thousand gulls there last night so I thought it might be worth checking them out as he was not able to in his short time there. Unfortunately, we arrived a little later than planned so did not have as much time with good light to really work the birds on the reservoir. Nonetheless, we were still able to find the following: 6 Loons (3 were Common and the other 3 also appeared to be but conditions prevented positive IDs) 2000+ Ring-billed Gulls California Gulls Herring Gulls 1 Franklin's Gull 1 MEW GULL (adult) 1 possible GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL (2nd yr bird, again, conditions prevented positive ID) - Mark Peterson Colorado Springs --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ Colorado Field Ornithologists: http://www.cfo-link.org/ Colorado County Birding: http://www.coloradocountybirding.com/ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] El Paso County -- Great Egret
COBirders, A quick stop at Big Johnson reservoir this evening, 10/19/09, produced mostly the same thing that has been there for a few weeks now. I did not see the Common Loon but it easily could still be there. The one bird that was new and noteworthy was a GREAT EGRET. This seems a little on the late side for the front range but maybe not?? The gull numbers were down with only about 50 birds comprised of Ring-billed, California and Herring (1). There were about 10 Herring there just 2 days ago. There were many grebes and a number of Hooded Mergansers (at least 8). - Mark Peterson Colorado Springs --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ Colorado Field Ornithologists: http://www.cfo-link.org/ Colorado County Birding: http://www.coloradocountybirding.com/ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Park County reservoirs
COBirders, Brad Steger, Alexander Steger and I headed up to check out Antero, Spinney Mountain and Eleven Mile reservoirs today, 10/16/09. Although we found no loons or scoters we did find a couple of other nice species. At Antero there were of course more American Coots than one would really ever care to count. There were also a number of ducks, especially in the northwest corner. Four species of gull, Ring-billed, California, Herring and a single Bonaparte's. The highlights though from Antero were the shorebirds, 3 Black-bellied Plovers near the southwest corner along with 20ish Long-billed Dowitchers. In the northeast corner there was a rather late and I believe rather rare record for Park county, Marbled Godwit. While looking at the Black-bellied Plovers we had a flyover, calling Chestnut-collared Longspur. On our way to Spinney Mountain reservoir we had a Burrowing Owl fly across the road in front of us. Seems a little late for up there. Spinney has a lot of shorebird habitat but we could only find a handful of Killdeer and Baird's Sandpipers. The water level is still fairly high and most of the birds were in the far northwest corner of the reservoir basically too far away to do much with. There were many Mountain Bluebirds and American Pipits near the entrance to the park. We spent very little time at Eleven Mile and we only saw expected species. We did see 3 Prairie Falcons at different locations between the three reservoirs but little else. A quick stop at Lake George and we were able to turn up a Swamp Sparrow at the south end. I am not sure what it is about this area but Swamp Sparrows seem to like it as there seems to be at least one found there every fall. - Mark Peterson Colorado Springs --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ Colorado Field Ornithologists: http://www.cfo-link.org/ Colorado County Birding: http://www.coloradocountybirding.com/ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Logan county --- YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON
COBirders, As Bill mentioned earlier, I had an adult YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON at Jumbo Reservoir today. The bird was in the southwest corner part of the lake. Unfortunately, Bills herd of Cattle Egrets were gone by the time I got there. I did see some at Jumbo but missed the big group. I birded the Road 29 and Road 6 ponds today in Phillips county and had the following shorebirds: Killdeer American Avocet Spotted Sandpiper Solitary Sandpiper Greater Yellowlegs Lesser Yellowlegs Semipalmated Sandpiper Western Sandpiper Least Sandpiper Baird's Sandpiper Pectoral Sandpiper Stilit Sandpiper Short-billed Dowitcher (1) Long-billed Dowitcher Wilson's Snipe Wilson's Phalarope A couple of other notes from this area: Blue-winged Teal with young (days old at best, young) Black-crowned Night-Heron (13) Olive-sided Flycatcher Dickcissel (1) At the Road 2 pond (Phillips and Yuma counties) there were signs of breeding too, the following had youngsters: Gadwall Blue-winged Teal American Coot American Avocet - Mark Peterson Colorado Springs --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ Colorado Field Ornithologists: http://www.cfo-link.org/ Colorado County Birding: http://www.coloradocountybirding.com/ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] NEOTROPIC CORMORANT -- Larimer County
COBirders, Nick Komar just called and asked me to report that there is a NEOTROPIC CORMORANT near Timnath Reservoir. The bird was in a small pond right next to County Line Rd. [cobirds] Boulder County update and Parula
COBirders, Lisa Edwards and I hit Gregory Canyon this morning (see number 4 at: http://www.coloradocountybirding.com/county/bird_a_county.php?name=Boulder ) The KENTUCKY WARBLER continues near the parking lot. The SCARLET TANAGER continues in the upper canyon. Just below where we had the Tanager near the location where the Tanager spent most of it time two years ago we heard a PARULA sing a few times. We never saw the bird but it gave a typical ascending Parula song. I believe we heard this bird singing around 7:00 am this morning. We also may have heard the Hooded Warbler chip a few times near the parking lot but could not confirm. We also had a CATTLE EGRET in a field on the west side of county line road and just south of HWY 52. It had a rather large toad that it was trying to get down. I assume the toad was a Woodhouse's Toad? - Mark Peterson Colorado Springs --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ Colorado County Birding: http://www.coloradocountybirding.com/ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. COBirders, For those of you that are interested, the horizontal county lists have been updated. Also, for those of you who do not know, I keep a running total on this list of all the birds reported in Colorado each year. I only show the current year and one year back. If you see something that I have not included that you know has been detected in some way or the other please let me know. I certainly may not hear about everything that has been detected each year. I should mention that I only update it by month. So if there is something that did not get detected until July (Black Vulture) it will not show up on the list until the August update. [cobirds] El Paso County --- goatsucker plus southeast CO
COBirders, Yesterday, Feb. 14th, Lisa Edwards, Brad Steger and I headed down to southeast Colorado to just poke around a little. We decided to head down via some back roads to look for Short-eared Owls on our way. Shortly after getting off of I-25 and heading east on Hanover Road in southern El Paso county we had a nightjar sitting in the middle of the road. Of course as we approached I don't think any of us actually thought it was a nightjar. But then we got closer and had rather good views and it then flew up right in front of us. The bird had what appeared to be a very short tail which points to COMMON POORWILL, which for what we know would be about the only likely suspect. Other features pointed to Common Poorwill also but the one thing that was different for me, was the color of the bird. It was much grayer than I am use to seeing. I would describe it almost being silver looking in the headlights. I am use to browner looking birds. Many years ago Brandon Percival and my wife and I saw a Poorwill on the Penrose CBC. This was in mid-December and the day before it had reached 70 degrees. When we saw that bird it was in the 40s. Yesterday morning it was 20 degrees when we saw this bird. It was sitting on the blacktop presumably soaking up any heat that may have been left from the previous day. I had learned from Bill Maynard many years ago about Poorwills going into a state of torpor during cold times. He did a little research for me again today (getting some information from Birds of North America) and because we spoke over the phone about it I do not have the exact details and quotes but there were some very interesting things in the account. The one thing that I do remember is that in Poorwill's southern range they have been found to remain completely inactive on as many as 90% of all winter days. Anyway, onto the other highlights. Near Olney Springs, Crowley county we had EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES, singing, on nest, eggs in a nest and one nest that had at least 2 youngsters. They were all in a juniper grove and there were two types of nests. One type that was very similar to a Mourning Dove nest and then another type that used much larger sticks. Other things of interest in Crowley County were ~1000 COMMON GOLDENEYE at Lake Henry. Unfortunately, we did not get there until almost dark and could not really pick through them looking for Barrow's Goldeneye and maybe some other goodie. There were a number of COMMON MERGANSERs in teh flock too. There were 500+ gulls flying over teh feedlot near Lake Meredith. All we could see were RING-BILLED GULLs but there certainly could have been some other species. In Otero county our highlights were 5 SANDHILL CRANES between Cheraw and Lake Holbrok, 67 GREATER SCAUP at Lake Holbrok (they were activly diving so I am sure I missed some) and a flock of 8-10 BUSHTITs in the town of Cheraw. I know there have been larger groups of Greater Scaup in Colorado but that is the largest group I have seen in Colorado. In Bent county we tried for the previously reported LeConte's Sparrow without luck. Many thanks to Duane for joining us and helping us look for the bird. We did have both LINCOLN'S SPARROWs and SWAMP SPARROWs. Nowhere near the number of Lincoln's and Swamp that have been previously reported though. Probably do to teh changing conditions of teh channel. Duane also showed us some AMERICAN WHITE PELICANs, migrants. Not much else that was viewable on teh lake. Except of course the ~10,000 white geese which is a 1/6 the number that was there in December. The EASTERN TOWHEE continues at the previous reported location near Road JJ and 16. We also had a male EVENING GROSBEAK at the Las Animas Cemetery. All in all it was a great day. - Mark Peterson Colorado Springs --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group.
