2017-03-07 Thread Nick Wedd
There have been some interesting games in this event. Zen19X has just lost
a game to JulieBot, by passing when the game was over but JulieBot made a
sente move inside its territory.

Unfortunately, I have not been writing my usual report and updating it
after each round, as there is a problem with the KGS server, that hinders
user access to completed games, and prevents the creation of a web page for
each completed round. Also unfortunately, I shall be busy with other
activities for the next few days, and probably won't be able to write my
report until Monday.

The December KGS bot tournament will be on Sunday, December 4th, starting
at 16:00 UTC and end by 21:25 UTC. It will use 13x13 boards, with time limits
of 19 minutes each plus very fast Canadian overtime, and komi of 7½.

It will be a Swiss tournament, with two divisions. Only bots that have
shown that they can beat gnugo3pt8 (currently rated as 5k on KGS) may enter
the Formal Division. Bots of any strength may enter the Open Division. If
there are fewer than three entrants (not counting gnugo3pt8) for the Formal
Division, they will be transferred to the Open Division, and the Formal
Division will be cancelled.

Congratulations to AyaMC, winner of the November KGS bot tournament!

My report is at http://www.weddslist.com/kgs/past/127/index.html
As usual I will welcome your comments and corrections.

   ~~

I am beginning to plan the schedule of KGS bot tournaments for 2017. The
number of players (exclding GNU Go, which only plays to make the numbers
even) this year has been 7,7,6,4,6,5,4,5,4,3,3. The advent of AlphaGo has
stimulated interest in computer Go, but has reduced attendance at these
events. There are not enough to justify the simultaneous running of two
divisions: this will be cancelled. I will probably reduce the frequency to
six tournaments a year, but I would like to hear your views.

[Computer-go] October KGS bot tournament

2016-10-01 Thread Nick Wedd
The October KGS bot tournament will be on Sunday, October 9th, starting at
16:00 UTC and ending by 23:55 UTC. It will use 9x9 boards, with time limits
of five minutes each plus very fast Canadian overtime, and komi of 7.

It will be a 40-round Swiss tournament with two divisions. Only bots that
have shown that they can beat gnugo3pt8 (currently rated as 5k on KGS) may
enter the Formal Division. Bots of any strength may enter the Open
Division. If there are fewer than three entrants (not counting gnugo3pt8)
for the Formal Division, they will be transferred to the Open Division, and
the Formal Division will be cancelled.

See http://www.gokgs.com/tournEntrants.jsp?id=1078 and
http://www.gokgs.com/tournEntrants.jsp?id=1079 . Please register by
emailing me at mapr...@gmail.com, with the words "KGS Tournament Registration"
in the email title, saying which division you want to play in.

Re: [Computer-go] Congratulations to AyaMC!

2016-09-08 Thread Nick Wedd
Thank you for pointing this out. There are no hidden tie-break
shenanigans. There is a defect in the script I use to convert
https://www.gokgs.com/tournEntrants.jsp?sort=s=1068 to a crosstable.
I'll probably leave the script as it is, and put this right with manual
edits.

I think Robert Waite reads this list, maybe he'll explain how the graphs
are generated.

I could create a cross-table for the Open division. If there are enough
players in future Open divisions, I will. But, with only two players, and
almost all games decided by one of the players running out of time or by

Maybe I'll do it anyway. It won't be difficult. But at present, all the

2016-07-17 Thread Nick Wedd
There were problems caused by my mis-typing entities: omitting the "&", and
typing "freac" instead of "frac". I fixed those manually.

I have now run the page through https://validator.w3.org/, and taken its
advice as far as I can. Initially it reported 26 errors and 6 warnings. At
peak, this was up to 134 errors. I eventually reduced it to 9 reported
errors, which I cannot remove without causing rendering errors. The
process was instructive, but has reinforced my view "if it ain't broke,
don't fix it".

GNU Go is now rated at 5k on KGS, having spent about a month at 4k. This
version is running a single thread on my rather old desktop.

I'd forgotten about the plan to have two divisions. Thank you for reminding

Yes, there will be two divisions, as specified at

I must edit that page to remove the mention of "McMahon". But there will
be two divisions.

The June KGS bot tournament will start on Sunday, June 19th, at 08:00 UTC

minutes each plus very fast Canadian overtime, and komi of 7. See

It will be a Swiss tournament, as usual. My investigation of the McMahon

Re: [Computer-go] McMahon tournaments on KGS

2016-05-18 Thread Nick Wedd
I have had second thoughts about this.

People have encouraged me to use McMahon instead of Swiss for the KGS bot
tournaments. But they may, like me, not have realised what they were asking
for - that they would be getting an American McMahon, not a European one.

Also, iniitial rating plays a larger part in deciding the result in an
American McMahon than in a European one. KGS ratings are based entirely on
19x19 games. I don't think we want the results of small-board tournaments
to be influenced by strength at 19x19 Go.

I have now realised that it was a language problem. "McMahon tournament"
means different things in Europe and America. I knew only the European
meaning, and KGS implements the American version.

I assume that those who wrote here encouraging me to I hold the monthly KGS

and that is what I can use. I hope they can advise me on sensible settings

[Computer-go] McMahon tournaments on KGS

2016-05-18 Thread Nick Wedd
I had been persuaded, by postings to this list, to run the monthly KGS bot
tournaments with a McMahon division.

I now think that this probably won't work. I have run a test McMahon
tournament. No handicaps were assigned, or reported in the results. This
*may* have been because none of the entrants had a confirmed rating (one
had a ? rating, four were unrated), but I doubt it. Even if all the
players were treated as having the same initial rating (probably 8k, where
I had set the lower bar), handicaps should have been used by the final
rounds.

You can see the results at
http://www.gokgs.com/tournEntrants.jsp?sort=n=1040

I will be willing to run another test tournament, today or tomorrow, if
someone can provide a "Ranked Robot" to help with the test. It should be
able to beat gnugo3pt8 consistently, and should preferably be willing to
play 9x9 Go. All you need to do is leave it running on KGS in tournament
mode, and email me with its name. I have left gnugo3pt8 running, to
restore its confirmed rating.

Re: [Computer-go] KGS bot tournaments: structure

2016-05-11 Thread Nick Wedd
LeelaBot now has "Ranked Robot" status. It will still need to play some
rated games to achieve a rank.

I propose to run the June KGS bot tournament (9x9) in two divisions. One
division will be McMahon, with entry restricted to programs that have
"Ranked Robot" status *and* are able to beat GNU Go; the other division
will be Swiss, without either restriction. If there are fewer than four
entrants to either division, I shall merge them into one, Swiss, tournament.

If anyone objects to any of this, please let me know soon, before I rewrite
http://www.weddslist.com/kgs/rules.html

You understand correctly.

I think that between us, would could reach agreement on what rankings to
use for seeding. But no-one has the power to input seeds anyway.

Whatever anyone thinks about the KGS rating algorithm, it isn't going to

[Computer-go] Rated Bot status on KGS

2016-05-10 Thread Nick Wedd
This message is mainly to explain the reasoning behind KGS's rules on
granting rated-bot status.

The rating system assumes that each player's strength is fairly stable. To
give an example of the sort of thing that might upset the rating system:

In the recent bot tournament, LeelaBot lost a game by trying to make an
illegal move in its opponent's one-point eye. That is not a problem in
itself. Suppose it plays rated games on KGS (as it would have to, to
acquire a rating) and some humans users find a way to take advantage of
this bug, and use it to boost their own ratings. Their ratings will rise,
as will the ratings of other users who have played them. That is
unfortunate. Now suppose Gian-Carlo fixes the bug, and LeelaBot continues
playing. Its rating will now rise, as will the ratings of those who learned
to profit from the bug, *and* of those others who have played them, etc..
This is what the admins really want to avoid.

I believe that if a significant improvement in a rated bot is made, its
account should be abandoned, and a new one created. I will advise the KGS
superadmin accordingly.

(In fact, I do not know why LeelaBot's application for Rated bot status has
produced no response. I am trying to find out. I hope Gian-Carlo Pascutto
can fix the bug, and if he can, he should do so *before* it starts to play
rated games.)

You are right.

It ought to be possible to tell the KGS authorities "this is an
experimental bot account. I would like it to be rated. I promise not to
rebuild the bot, if I ever make changes I will abandon the account." But,
as we are seeing, the process of getting Rated bot status can be slow, and
I am reluctant to overload it.

[Computer-go] McMahon bot touraments on KGS

2016-05-10 Thread Nick Wedd
I have never run a KGS McMahon tournament. Everyone McMahon tournament I
have run, played in, or been aware of has had more players than rounds, and
most KGS bot tournaments have more rounds than players. So I would like to
run an experimental McMahon tournament on KGS, to see what the scheduler
does.

I will also find out how it handles unrated entrants.

I am looking for volunteers to provide players for a test tournament. I can
provide several instances of GNU Go, one of them rated. I would like other
volunteers, particularly of rated bots. I expect to use fast time limits,
and whatever board size suits the entrants.

[Computer-go] KGS bot tournaments: structure

2016-05-10 Thread Nick Wedd
At present, KGS bot tournaments are run as Swiss tournaments. Entry is
restricted to bots able to beat GNU Go, which is rated at 7k.

Two suggestions have been made recently for changes in the structure. One
is to allow bots of any strength to enter, and to have two divisions, with
those unable to beat GNU Go in the lower division. The other is to use
McMahon instead of Swiss.

A problem with McMahon is that the scheduling software (a module of the KGS
server, which I have no control over) uses the ratings assigned by KGS, and
many bots do not have such ratings. I don't think it's reasonable to
require all entrants to have rated bot status. Rated bot status is granted
only to *stable* bots, ones which do not change rapidly in strength and
thereby upset the ratings of their opponents. I think it's fine for
someone to enter an experimental bot of unknown strength in a tournament,
but such a bot cannot have a KGS rating.

Maybe we could combine the two suggestions. Have two divisions: upper
division McMahon, with entrants required to have KGS ratings of 7k or
better; lower division open. I would like to hear people's views on this -
and any more suggestions they have.

Re: [Computer-go] Congratulations to Zen!

2016-05-09 Thread Nick Wedd
A problem with McMahon is that the bots would all need KGS ratings. I
can't assign ratings myself, the scheduler uses the ratings assigned by
KGS. In the five tournaments held so far this year, there are sixteen bots
that have competed at least once: eight have been rated, eight not.

Re: [Computer-go] May KGS bot tournament

2016-05-04 Thread Nick Wedd
Here's a suggestion. I would like to hear what Urban, and others, think
about it.

I enter GnuGo in these events to keep the numbers even. The operators of
strong bots don't want to waste processor cycles proving that they can beat
GnuGo, but they prefer it to a bye.

Instead of my using GnuGo to make the numbers even, I could use Urban's
program. The downside for Urban is that he would have to get it connected
and running, with only a 50% chance that it will actually get any games.
The upside for him is that it will sometimes get experience against much
stronger players. I assume that the operators of the strong programs don't
care whether they get to play against GnuGo or Urban's program.

By the way - I haven't yet received any entries for this Sunday's
tournament. I hope my message reached the list.

[Computer-go] Congratulations to Zen!

2016-04-10 Thread Nick Wedd
Congratulations to Zen19X, winner of the April 13x13 KGS bot tournament
with nine wins from ten games!

My report is at http://www.weddslist.com/kgs/past/121/index.html
As usual I will welcome your comments. But I am much too weak a player to
have anything useful to say about the games.

[Computer-go] April KGS bot tournament: 13x13

2016-03-26 Thread Nick Wedd
The April KGS slow bot tournament will start on Sunday,April 10th, at 08:00

minutes each plus very fast Canadian overtime, and komi of 7.5. See

Note that the March (Slow) KGS bot tournament has not yet started, it will
start at 22:00 UTC on Sunday 27th. If you register for either event,
please make it clear in your registration email which event your are
registering for. The March KGS bot tournament is unusually late this year,
because there have been other computer-Go events through much of March. I
have opened registration for the April KGS bot tournament earlier than
usual, because I will be away from home, with uncertain internet access,
for some of the next two weeks.

I don't think DeepMind's real objective was to create a world Go champion.
I think it was to build an engine that could learn to perform difficult
intellectual tasks better than any human; and they chose Go for their first
test because there was a clear objective measure of success. If I am
right, we won't see much more of their "Go engine", instead they will
direct their resources to training their general-purpose engine to do other
more useful things.

"CGI" stands for "CGI Go Intelligence", where CGI is the name of the

It appeared in 2015, and is derived from Amigo.
