Years ago, when my kids were younger, I too needed a way to control their surfing online. What I did was I built my own firewall using an older unused computer and a free Linux software product called Smoothwall. I have since moved on to a similar product called IPCop. Whichever you choose, both allow you to place all kinds of limits on user access. I have a usb dongle that allows me to connect the naked 2.5 drive to my laptop...how do I migrate? Does MS not offer something like Apple's Migration Assistant? I have owned small businesses for the past 40 years. I retired in Jan 2007. I provided health insurance for employees. Certainly for the past 10 years, I provided a compensation package that took the cost of health insurance into consideration. Drive placement has a lot to do with this. I recently had to swap Laptops and put my working HD into a different style Dell. The drive in the old Dell was toward the back where the heat sinks are and never really got warm. The newer Dell has the drive toward the front and I can feel the heat all the time. I appreciate the time and effort you put into helping me resolve the parenting aspect of my problem. The circular logic of your last two sentences escapes me however. There's a difference between a lockdown and guidance. When you're around to provide encouragement and rewards for doing homework and not getting distracted by inappropriate sites, that's learning, not policing. There are commercial programs that schools use to block sites. They don't work in high schools. Students learn [they're learning something!] how to circumvent the software. If your kid doesn't figure out how to do this, friends will show how or do it for him. Instead of relying on the airport directly, can you put a router between the airport and broadband connection? Routers are cheap. A Linksys router might do what you want initially, but, of course, there are ways to get around the controls. Be glad that the problem isn't IM. I replaced a 50G Hitachi 5400RPM drive with a 160G WD Scorpio, 5400 RPM in a ThinkPad with no adverse effects. That was in early May, the laptop runs most of the day every day. Unless your kids are fairly young, they'll get around it soon. Best thing about it -- it's free. Platform: Windows. FAQ claims that a Mac version will be available late in 2007--maybe. Can't OpenDNS http://www.opendns.com/ also do this [better]? Have children figured out how to get around this too? Create an OpenDNS account and try their controls. Use secure alphanumeric passwords on your router/modem/airport. Then talk to the kids and explain what you're doing, but not how to do it. Windows Restore only restores the Windows Registry to a previously created restore point state. It's not a total system backup/ rollback tool. What's the deal with iTunes updates? Every time I turn around, there's another update waiting for download. I know I regularly use 5 computers, but it seems like I've installed an update once a month on all of them. Perhaps you should try product from a less dynamic company? Perhaps one that only ships major upgrades at 5-year intervals and has no interest in innovating? Anyone interested in a Zune? My 60GB 4G iPod has been exhibiting increasingly strange behavior. I had thought the nearly 2 yo device was failing but, after viewing pages on iLounge and on the Apple forums, I am beginning to suspect that recent iTunes updates may be breaking the older units ... or maybe it's just a coincidence h? Thanks for the link to OpenDNS. It looks very interesting. Interesting to note that one of the categories of sites blocked are sites that provide information about proxy servers. You can check URLs to see if they are blocked. I'm glad to see that Reporters Without Borders (rsf.org) and the Electronic Frontier Foundation (eff.org) are not blocked (yet) even though they have a lot of information about proxey servers. Thank Fred Holmes and John de Carlo, since they suggested OpenDNS to me on the list first, recently anyway.
