Yes they have a point. Greater size and especially speed is affected

Whichever you choose, both allow you to place all kinds of limits on

Drive placement has a lot to do with this.

I recently had to swap Laptops and put my working HD into a different

I appreciate the time and effort you put into helping me resolve the
parenting aspect of my problem. The circular logic of your last two
 sentences escapes me however.

There's a difference between a lockdown and guidance. When you're around
to provide encouragement and rewards for doing homework and not getting
distracted by inappropriate sites, that's learning, not policing.

There are commercial programs that schools use to block sites. They
don't work in high schools. Students learn [they're learning something!]
how to circumvent the software. If your kid doesn't figure out how to do
this, friends will show how or do it for him.

Instead of relying on the airport directly, can you put a router between
the airport and broadband connection? Routers are cheap. A Linksys
router might do what you want initially, but, of course, there are ways
to get around the controls. Be glad that the problem isn't IM. AIM
searches for alternate ports if you close the port it uses.

State of Delaware schools use Blue Coat, http://www.bluecoat.com/. Try
their free K9 home version, http://www.k9webprotection.com/. It uses a
web-based database. Unless your kids are fairly young, they'll get
around it soon. Best thing about it -- it's free. Platform: Windows.
FAQ claims that a Mac version will be available late in 2007--maybe.

Can't OpenDNS http://www.opendns.com/ also do this [better]? Have
children figured out how to get around this too? Create an OpenDNS
account and try their controls. Use secure alphanumeric passwords on
your router/modem/airport.

Then talk to the kids and explain what you're doing, but not how to do it.

Like Rev. Stewart said, I upgraded from a 50G Hitachi HTS54106 to a 160G WD
using Acronis True Image. I never bothered checking with the helpful IBM
support guys.

I bought a 2.5 mini-enclosure (Bytecc)with USB 2.0 from Newegg, installed
the WD in it and dongled the new HDD to the ThinkPad. I burned a clone with
Acronis, de-installed the Hitachi and installed the WD in its place. Booted
right up! I swapped the Hitachi into the Bytecc enclosure and now I've got
an offsite backup for My Documents. It was fairly painless.

I have a T61 ThinkPad and it is definitely ATA150. Go to the IBM/Lenovo
site and verify your config or just pop out the drive -- it's pretty easy --
and take a look.

I have confidence is the ability of the people who created these hacks
to be able to overcome the patches as they come out.

People who have hacked their iPhones each of these updates are viewed

ability to do software hacks.

Re: [CGUYS] restore point in XP

Windows Restore only restores the Windows Registry to a previously
created restore point state. It's not a total system backup/ rollback
tool. It won't restore changes to application software or user data for
instance.

I don't really know, but I think that whenever a new application is
installed or an old one is removed, the system can't be restored to a
time before that was done.

In my experience, the problem never has involved a hardware failure
such as a bad disk. Sometimes an application caused the problem,
sometimes a bad or missing file in Windows caused the problem. The
trick is to diagnose the problem -- fixing it then usually is easy.

Re: [CGUYS] iTunes updates

2007-09-21 Thread Tom Piwowar
What's the deal with iTunes updates? Every time I turn around, there's
another update waiting for download. I know I regularly use 5 computers,
but it seems like I've installed an update once a month on all of them.

Perhaps you should try product from a less dynamic company? Perhaps one
that only ships major upgrades at 5-year intervals and has no interest in
innovating? Anyone interested in a Zune?

I only update my iTunes when the update looks interesting (or the one
time Apple forced the issue).

My 60GB 4G iPod has been exhibiting increasingly strange behavior. I
had thought the nearly 2 yo device was failing but, after viewing

maybe it's just a coincidence h?

YMMV

Thanks for the link to OpenDNS. It looks very interesting.

Interesting to note that one of the categories of sites blocked are sites
that provide information about proxy servers.

You can check URLs to see if they are blocked. I'm glad to see that
Reporters Without Borders (rsf.org) and the Electronic Frontier
Foundation (eff.org) are not blocked (yet) even though they have a lot of
information about proxey servers.

They should add a category for sites by sociopaths.

...not to mention all the ancillary stuff iTunes installs. I recently
had to install it again to buy a tune I needed, but after a week I
just couldn't take it anymore and have uninstalled it.

Maybe we should take up a collection for Tony? If a few of us kick in a
couple of bucks we can get him a 20 GB hard drive.

 Betty,

A few weeks ago I requested DNS services that work better than the ones
I'm using. Thank Fred Holmes and John de Carlo, since they suggested
OpenDNS to me on the list first, recently anyway.

I wouldn't use the service to block anything from children or anyone
else [I don't like any kind of censorship], but am noting that the
feature is available. Use it judiciously.
