[CGUYS] First time computer buyer
The brother of a good friend of mine wants to purchase his very first computer. This fellow just had his 48th birthday. I was asked to look into the question of what he should get, primarily just for e-mail, but who knows what he will eventually want to use it for over time. Being a Mac user, I was thinking Macintosh for various reasons based upon my own personal experiences and knowledge. However, he is insisting on a Windows machine, and I have now backed out of trying to help him make a purchase because I have little knowledge of what would be best for him on that platform. His sole reason for having to have a Windows machine is because, as he says, everyone else has one. What he really means is that he doesn't know anyone who uses anything else, except for me and my good friend, and he wants to be a part of the really big flock. His scope is limited. He does not need this computer for anything related to his work. I have said it before here, and once again it has happened. A computer purchase is being predicated upon the erroneous and paranoid concept that everyone else has one. Queried about this, he says that he fears not being able to get any help when he needs it if he gets anything but a Windows computer. and from what he hears and understands from others, he says he'll probably be needing a lot of that. This is a typical rationale I hear all the time. Additionally, he only wants to spend about $400 or so for everything, including the printer. He knows nothing of computer pricing, so this is not an issue of wanting a Windows machine simply because they are known to be initially cheap. This is no attempt to fan any flames, but merely a little peek into what I have always perceived to be a major selling point for a particular computer platform. Re: [CGUYS] First time computer buyer
In January, I got a very nice Compaq Presario for my wife for less than $400 with a dual core Athlon processor and 3GB of RAM. It is my impression that is about the best deal you can get. This was for the CPU only, no monitor, printer, or other peripheral. If this guy refuses to spend more than $400, I predict he'll end up with something he'll not be satisfied with. If Apple offers a package that includes a printer for $400 or less (I believe all Apple computers come with monitors), then he should go with Apple, as I understand their customers are always happy with their purchase. Faced with a similar situation several years ago, I told the person who had asked for help to find someone more up on Windows than I was at the time. I explained that my expertise was not centered there, I'd feel bad if they were disappointed, and would not be their best choice for any follow-on help after the purchase. Re: [CGUYS] Mail from MacBook through Mac mini Problem
The way to sort this out is to simplify to the max, test, and fix. Then only when successful add the next complication and test/fix that. Step 1 is to connect your MacBook using a network cable to whereever your MacMini is plugged in the the Internet. Test for general internet access. Once you have that, test the email. The acid test is sending an email to yourself. If that arrives you can move on to something more complicated. Getting email working can be tricky because there are multiple settings that you have to get exactly right. Some ISPs use non-standard ports to avoid spammers. There are different schemes used for authentication. I just spent 2 hours on the phone helping a client only to discover that they were using the wrong password. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

Spring for the cost and purchase a router. In addition to being more straightforward to set up (via a web page), you get the advantage of a hardware firewall. Re: [CGUYS] Mail from MacBook through Mac mini Problem
Instead of connecting through another Mac or a PC, you should be connecting to the Internet directly through the wireless access point/router/modem, unless you have dialup. Your firewall settings are done there and not in the other computer. Do you have broadband access? Can you log in to your wireless router [what brand/model?]? Do you know how to open ports or change firewall settings? For POP email, incoming port is 110, outgoing is 25, 465 or 587 depending on provider; IMAP port is 143. Can you get email on your Mini? It's easier to open ports in Tiger than Leopard, but if there's a router, change settings there. Re: [CGUYS] Firewall Logging: Are these a problem?
Apple's documentation is often dated. They are much faster a putting new stuff up than at taking obsolete info down. Except that one of the ADC articles I quoted was explicitly written for Leopard, and I could show you other articles as well, like one on writing 64 bit code for Leopard which explicitly cautions you to use the CUPS filter to write a 64 bit printer driver, etc. As for cupsd not showing up in Leopard's Activity Monitor for you, that is a puzzler. It shows up for me (clean install, so it isn't a leftover from Tiger), and it shows up on every Leopard mac I have looked at that has a printer installed. The printers involved so far include HP BW and color laserjets, an HP inkjet, a Brother inkjet and a Canon imageRunner photocopier/printer/scanner (generic postscript driver for that, Canon is bad about OS X drivers for their big machines). All of the printers are of fairly recent vintage, and I've looked at 5 computers so far, with Leopard native on 4 of them and an upgrade on one. So, some possible explanations (from my perspective) are: 1) You checked for cupsd on a mac that hasn't had a printer set up for it in System Preferences, so maybe CUPS would not have been turned on, 2) You weren't looking at all processes in Activity Monitor, but were looking at my processes instead (something I've done at times.) 3) We are living in parallel universes connected by the web, where each of us is right. (I don't give this one much credence.) There are undoubtedly other possibilities I haven't thought of. We can agree to disagree on this until more convincing evidence comes to light, since it doesn't make much difference in practical terms. If printing is working quite well for everyone, there is less need to be concerned with the guts of the OS. But if you are interested in pursuing this a little more, I'd like to know what you see if you run Activity Monitor while printing, particularly if your printers are connected by USB, because all of my examples were of networked printers. In any case, to return to the original question in this thread, given what I've seen, if you have a network printer in your printer list, then having CUPS showing up in your firewall log is probably a fairly common experience. On May 5, 2009, at 12:00 AM, COMPUTERGUYS-L automatic digest system wrote: From:Tom Piwowar t...@tjpa.com But I still think I am right on this one. Re: [CGUYS] First time computer buyer
We have 3 PCs. I don't like the cheap [free] Compaq Presario notebook with Vista Home Premium. The HP notebook with Vista Business is a much better computer, but retails for twice as much as the Compaq. However, we got a display model for about the same price as the Compaq. We also have a ca. 2006 Dell desktop with XP Pro. All 3 belong to my husband and do mostly what he needs, and when they don't he has a PowerMac G5. I have 3 Macs and an iPod Touch, and run XP on one. PC notebooks I like are by Toshiba. Sony Vaio is very nice, but I don't trust them for quality. Unless all you want is an Internet device, to get a decent computer for $400 you need to buy used, display model, refurb. For Internet only, buy cheap, but don't expect it to do video editing, photo retouch, spreadsheets, page layout, illustration, movies, except online Flash videos and Netflix streams. As for the usual FUD about getting help, he'll be on the Internet. He can join a user group, CGuys list or ask friends for help with a PC or Mac. 'You gets what you pays for.' Additionally, he only wants to spend about $400 or so for everything, including the printer. [CGUYS] Reliability of cars
We had a brief mention of the quality of American cars Vs foreign some time ago. Here is a blog writer who makes some good points: http://www.oftwominds.com/blogmay09/bigthree05-09.html This lack of durability of the Big Three vehicles receives almost no visibility. The fact that a car made by American workers with largely American-made parts in Tennesee lasts a decade or more with virtually no repairs or maintenance required while the 10-year old Big Three vehicle is either junked or a problem-riddled beater is the 800-pound gorilla in the room few have cared to discuss. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

Re: [CGUYS] EMachines Recovery Disc cutoff date
It's true what Tom is saying though. Content and capability cost money to provide... when you spend less on a system you get less and inevitably hit a wall in some aspect sooner than with a more substantive system. Then you have to spend to regain what you lack. I have a high end Dell... since it cost more than an e-machine, it comes with the OS, drivers etc on a DVD. To do that or for e-machine to stock and be able to deliver older images, e-machines would have to cost more. db mike wrote: Always helpful Tom. Re: [CGUYS] First time computer buyer
You don't say whether he wants a notebook or a desktop. I bought my daughter a HP desktop PC computer for Xmas this past year for about $350. It was not the cheapest: I wanted a dual-core processor. I am amazed at the quality and value when the mail-order computer arrived from HP. My daughter does video graphic design in college, needed a fast machine -- I decided to go with 4 GB DDRAM, a free upgrade then. Checking prices now at HP web site: AMD single-core processor, $300. Intel dual-core, $380. $300 computer comes with 250 GB hard drive, DVD burner, 2 GB memory, Eithernet card, card reader, optical mouse, 6 USB and one IEEE 1394 ports. Note: card slots limited to 3 besides video card slot. Wireless LAN, printer and monitor extra. Monitor likely costs the most, and wireless, printer, monitor together will probably cost more than $100 if bought new. (Seems like HP computer not as good a deal as last Xmas.) Some minimal software is offered for free, but heavy duty software will cost maybe as much as the computer. Notebooks run about 30% more than desktops. If he only wants to get on internet, get a netbook or perhaps a notebook mini computer. Latter is $280 at HP, but is a poor excuse for a computer for heavy-duty use. phartz...@gmail.com wrote: The brother of a good friend of mine wants to purchase his very first computer. Checking prices now at HP web site: AMD single-core processor, $300. Intel dual-core, $380. That's not the real price. We have been upgrading classroom computers to Adobe Creative Suite CS4. The Mac installs were uneventful. The Windows installs were one problem after another. Both Macs and Windows needed the latest OS patches before the CS installer would run. The Mac patcher quickly downloaded and quickly ran. The Windows patcher stopped downloading at the 10% mark and would not resume. I tried again with different computers and different programs, but always the download halted at 9 or 10 percent, never to resume. So I could not get a patcher. Instead I had to run Windows Update on every computer individually. A slow process. The downloaded sat for 12 minutes at Preparing to download... with nothing happening. Then the download dribbled in at an agonizingly slow rate (bottleneck at the M$ server, not my connection). Then a slow install, etc, etc. I will spare you more tales to woe, but it is now 10 hours later and I am not yet finished. Re: [CGUYS] First time computer buyer
I'm going to repeat myself. If he isn't willing to spend a bit more, he'll end up with an underpowered computer he won't be happy with. Maybe he will, maybe he won't. Most of the computers that you can get today are vastly overpowered for what most people end up using them for: word processing, email and web surfing. I always ask people what their budget is and what they plan to do with the computer. I never ask them what platform they want to use nor attempt to browbeat them into using one over the other. Usually, people want to get a laptop because they think they need a laptop, when in fact it's going to sit on their desk at home. They're seduced by the thought of taking it to Starbucks and being one of the cool kids. When I point out that will probably not-insignificantly increase the cost of their purchase, they often change their minds. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

Re: [CGUYS] OT: Cable Digital TV
This can be read On-Topic or Off-Topic as you will. The saga continues, and continues, and continues: So far we've replaced the Apex box with an RCA box. We get a much clearer picture with the RCA box, and I like the RCA remote much better than the Apex remote, but we only receive one additional station. (Of course, it's not WETA.) We have also tried replacing our home-made antenna (a la the YouTube instructions) with an RCA super antenna. Same results whichever antenna we used, so the RCA antenna, with booster, goes back to Walmart tomorrow. No real need to throw away $30 for nothing. My husband has also reconfigured our home-made antenna to add a few inches (by using longer pieces of coathanger for the legs of the antenna). That has boosted our signal so we get an additional 3 stations. Nothing we want, especially, but 3 more than before. We have played with locating the best signal possible inside the house, and we've gotten to about 80% signal strength. (The RCA box has very nice controls for monitoring this, which is helpful in siting the antenna for best reception.) The next move will be to buy some more antenna cable and try extending the antenna outside, and above the level of our (flat) roof to see what difference that makes. This is all pretty ridiculous, but at this point it's the principle of the thing. If the antenna works outside the house, we'll have to think about whether, or not, we want to get a real adjustable roof antenna for another couple hundred $$$s. What a rip-off this whole thing is turning out to be. The alternative might (or might not!) be to get an HD tv and hook it up to the Comcast cable in our house. The only stopper for that is -- I don't think the signal strength to any of our tv's will be strong enough for them to actually receive digital signals without having Comcast come in and re-wire our house (the Comcast cable splits here and there as it is fed to various tv's in the house). We had to connect the new Comcast box directly to the one TV it's 'feeding' and split beyond it for that tv to receive any of the digital signals. When we put the splitter between the tv and the box, not only did we lose digital signals, but we also lost many of the signals we got before adding the box. Frustrating to the max! Sorry to hear about the complications with your eMachines computer. Take heart. I have an eMachines AMD 64 Athlon M6805 purchased in June 2004. It came with a recovery partition, but also included original XP sp1 disks, that I also still have. The computer was a great buy at the time and is still a dependable machine dual booted with XP sp3 and Ubuntu 64 bit. I am upgrading Ubuntu to 9.04 right now. Unless you want the eMachines bloatware, try a local, Mom and Pop computer store who might sell you an older XP license for cheap (maybe even a gimme) that will work with your computer and you can update quickly with a broadband internet connection. Trash your recovery partition and install XP clean. I can still find drivers for all the hardware in my machine if I have to (needed Broadcom wireless drivers for Ubuntu), but XP seems to do fine finding the updated drivers on its own. They may not have recovery disks, but the drivers are still available for download for your computer (http://www.emachines.com/support/product_support.html?cat=Desktopssubcat=W Seriesmodel=W3107). Otherwise, you might have a good time geeking out with a solo boot of Linux (like Ubuntu) on your machine. I'm really enjoying it and never thought I would after living on DOS/Windows/Apple OS machines since the mid-80s. Linux has come a long way and the Ubuntu desktop CD is really pretty painless. And Brian, don't let the MS vs. Apple talk get you down. I would have to go to eBay for Jaguar disks for my G4 Titanium PowerBook, too.
