need to buy a laptop because wife has decided to use the desktop many hours
a day for her new-found hobby of photography: this leaves me without access
to a computer, particularly the internet or other simple tasks. If I get a
laptop I will need a simple cheap one only since wife goes to sleep early,
 thereby freeing the desktop computer.

Starting with the Dell web site, I find that a laptop with:

 Memory 4GB 800 MHz RAM
500 GB 5400 RPM hard drive
 6-cell battery
Intel Link 5100 N wireless modem
 8X CD/DVD burner (dual layer)

 Questions:
Is this laptop a good choice? Is it a good price? Are there other brands
or options that I ought to consider? Specially: I want good performance at
the cheapest price. I am very stingy by nature!

P.S. Please don't say to buy a Mac laptop instead of a Windows machine. I
bought my daughter a MacBook Pro and she likes it very well, but I am more
comfortable with a Windows OS because I already have a large number of
Windows programs that I can install on a laptop, plus I don't want to start
a new personal learning curve to use the Mac -- i.e., sharing data between

does one have reliable 911 with VoIP?
thought one needed a landline for reliable, available 911.
Pls. help me with this issue!

On Fri, Jan 1, 2010 at 6:00 PM, Robert Carroll carrollcompu...@gmail.comwrote:

In the 2010 February issue of Consumer Reports, there are tests of 15 items
sold on TV infomercials that use hard-sell language. As one may suspect,
most items did not live up to the claims made therein. But one got a
favorable review, the MagicJack for connecting to VoIP. The review follows
 below.

I have only a general knowledge of VoIP. Can someone point me to a source
that offers specific info so that I may decide if having VoIP is
 advantageous for me?

 The CU review:

*The claim.* MagicJack, a VoIP (voice over Internet protocol) phone device
and service, makes your monthly phone bill disappear, an online ad says.
Save hundreds, even thousands, of dollars and get no more poor
reception. You plug MagicJack into a computer's USB port, plug the line
cord of your own phone into the other end of the USB adapter, and MagicJack
uses the Internet to make and receive
calls. You need broadband Internet access, and the computer has to be on
for you to make or receive a call. If it's off, messages go to voice mail.
The charge: $39.95 for the device and one year of local and long-distance
calling; then $19.95 per year. Details are at www.magicjack.com.

*The check.* One of our electronics experts made dozens of calls over
several days, sometimes while downloading files or playing online computer
 games.

*Bottom line*. Shazam! Calls connected, and voice quality was clear, though
not as clear as on a good corded phone on a regular line. When our tester
downloaded a big file while playing an online game and making a call, there
was some interference. But if you can live with a few limitations, it's a
great deal. Vonage VoIP service can cost $216 a year; Skype, $95, and you
 must buy a Skype phone.

No matter where such a gadget that has to be viewed is installed, if it

but, I don't have the Start button (cuz that activation screen comes up

not necessarily. I was editor of a newsletter (generally 12-16 pp) for a dog
club (200 members) a few years back. To get the file to the printers, I had
to convert the .pub file to .pdf (ie, save it as .pdf). I found a very wide
variety of differences between the many free .pdf print programs. Some
wouldn't render unusual fonts properly. Some messed up photos. And the
differences in file size were huge! Also, I got a much smaller size if i

Preview does not attempt to create optimized PDFs. It saves the file as

There's a version of Skype for mobile phones that should work on the
second generation iPod Touch. I have a 1st gen which needs an external
microphone that I can either buy for $50 or hack myself with a few parts
and a soldering gun, plus it needs to be jailbroken. Unlocking your
GSM WiFi phone may not allow you to use Skype or similar because
companies like Orange, O2, ATT and T-Mobile have disabled those
features on their branded WiFi/GSM phones if you don't purchase a data
package. Of course that makes using mobile VOIP and Skype almost
 pointless anyway.

XMS.Sirrus is a subscriber satellite link that you get from the radio waves
via a special receiver that allows you to listen via a subscription service.
 (so airwave)

Radio via Cable provider is a normal radio signal or special audio channels

By the way Internet Audio now has a formula on how they will pay off the

replace it?

I have not worked with that specific model, but Every PoweBrook keyboard
I have ever worked with is about the same. Two spring-loaded tabs at the
top release the keyboard. Underneath is a ribbon cable that connects to
the motherboard. Just do the obvious. (Even my low-tech, theater-major
son was able to fix his G3 laptop without asking me any questions.)

If you are giving up on the keyboard you might as well try stronger
medicine. Disconnect it from the computer and give it a good wash in
distilled water. Give it a good dry with a hair dryer and then let it sit
for a couple of days to dry further. You may find that it works fine
after that. Or you may find that you have totally ruined it.

I just got a notice from T-Mobile. They raised their fees for SMS/text
to 20 cents incoming/outgoing. That's outrageous! Is this a reaction to
a US market that doesn't complain when prices are raised for no reason?
Or is this to counter the European Union's actions to reduce price
gouging by Euro telcos? Looks like T-Mobile/Deutsche Telekom is making
up lost fees in the EU by raising our rates, although their 2007
earnings look good. The least that ALL telcos should do is have free
incoming texts so we don't have to pay for spam texts.

I'm seriously considering switching to 7-11 SpeakOut [lowered their
charges for voice and text in 1/08], or buying another SpeakOut phone
and using it for text [5 cents incoming/outgoing texts, 15 cents/min
voice, 1 yr expiration] and keeping T-Mobile PAYGO for voice [10
cents/min, $100 refill, 1 yr expiration]. Wish they sold the dual SIM
phones in the US so I wouldn't have to carry two phones, but, again, the
United States is far behind other countries when it comes to mobile as
well as broadband.

The international United Mobile SIM card has free incoming calls in 80
countries, but not here. TravelSIM has free incoming calls and texts in
many countries, but not here. The US can't compete because Americans,
except sometimes in Philadelphia region, don't demand fair prices.
Instead we get nickeled and dimed to death by the likes of Verizon and
ATT, paying $50-60/month for services that cost $30-35/month elsewhere.
Eurozone smart phones are much cheaper too, Nokia N95 €29 euros w/18 mo.
plan vs. $600 in US, no plan available.

If you primarily use voice, T-Mobile has the best deal, as long as the
reception is good. If you text more than talk, try SpeakOut [uses ATT
GoPhone network, phones sold only at 7-11 stores] No 7-11 near you? Have
a friend pick one up for you.

for Verizon DSL, is what I guess I will stick with for the time being. I am
a sports junkie and unfortunately, Comcast sports package is not on par wiht
what DirecTV offers where I can get most all most major cities regional

But if someone can suggest a company that operates a DSL service that is NOT

If you go to Verizon's web site and click on the Terms and Conditions
link you will see in several places that the terms require Verizon voice
service. So refusing to give you a better deal due to your dry line
would be consistent behavior.

So what leverage do you have? Is the only thing you get from Verizon the
DSL? Have you checked on alternative providers (e.g. at
BroadbandReports). Will any of them give you a better deal? Can you use
switching to another provider as a reason Verizon should give you a price
cut?

up with the correct home page. It is an unexpected result, to say the

even more careful about what they plug into the address bar. This is
the first time I've seen this.

Richard P.

FWIW, I don't see anything but my IP at that url.

Very interesting.

When I access whatismyip.org using FireFox (Win) I get a white page
with
just my IP listed. Show source shows no HTML, just the IP number.

When I access whatismyip.org using FireFox (Mac) I get a colorful page
with my IP in big type, a What's New blog, a sidebar full of other
services, and another sidebar full of Google ads.

Is this Mac politicking?

And Firefox on Linux gets the same thing you list for Firefox/Win.

involve transitioning between machines less often although buying a
gaming machine would be overkill if you aren't a gamer.

Laptops can be doggy because they are trying hard to extend battery

Depends on your needs. I prefer the Latitude systems as they are

The difference between Celeron and Regular Pentiums is a little more
elusive.

Most of the Intels in laptops are M processors which are mobile
processors meant to run cooler.

Cache size tends to be the biggest difference between a Celeron and
regular processor.

That is all I can remember aobut them I am sure there is more.

Very concise. Not necessarily sufficient.

If you have lost the indications of unread messages that shows up in the
left hand pane in parentheses, that probably means the indices (*.msf
folders) are hosed.

One way of forcing TB to rebuild messed up ones is to do a search.

Right click on Local Folders (for example) and click Search. Search on
something, and watch as each folder has its index built and the number of
unread messages shows up.

If it is just your Inbox, do the same thing for that, it will just go more
quickly.

Re: [CGUYS] Are Passwords Obsolete?

what is a CAC card??

what is good s/w for changing storing p/w's?

Fred Holmes wrote:

Some systems will lock you out after a small number of consecutive failed
authentication attempts. Three? Five? Ten?

It would also seem possible to write code that requires the system to wait, say
five seconds, before another attempt at a correct password may be made, thus
making a dictionary attack impossibly long.

I don't think requiring frequent change of password is worth much.

Sooner or later everyone will have a CAC card, or at least banks will issue
them for on-line banking.

Fred Holmes

Passwords have to be stored on the computer or network so the OS can
verify what is typed in. The secure way to do this is to never store an
actual password, but instead a hashed version. So when a password is
typed it is hashed by the computer and compared to the stored version.
This way there is never a copy of the password that a hacker may find.
The hashing programs work only in one direction, so a hashed password
can't be unhashed.

This can be defeated by a dictionary attack. Every possible combination
of characters is hashed and the password-hash pair stored. Then the
hacker only has to retrieve the hashed password and look up the real
password in the dictionary. This was once hard to do because it took so
long to create the dictionary. But today such a dictionary only has to be
created once and lookups can easily be made via the Web, often simply
Googled.

So isn't all the fuss to force us to make up long, complicated passwords
and change them frequently, just a silly waste of time? What they call
security theater.

I am using a little device that connects a regular turntable to a

a small box that provides the proper equalization curve for LPs and then
feeds it via usb to an old computer I no longer use for anything else.
I'm slowly converting all of my LPs to cd and mp3 via this process. I

I don't listen to my LPs anymore, which makes using my only turntable

Since I'm not at home now, I can't provide the details for the little
