Could you check that acpi is enabled on the kernel you're booting (i.e. acpi=on not acpi=ht) cause that's when the problems arise. It would be interesting to see if this is the case or not. It is the same plugin that worked in Mozilla 1.1 Galeon 1.2 before the MDK 9 to 9.2 upgrade and still works with Phoenix 0.5(fortunately). However, I have tried all the new (1.4.2_01) SUN java plugins with the same or worse results. Clicking on one of the I-VIDEO links should pop-up a new window with the embedded Real Player(RP) and begin to play the video. BUT, clicking on a link sometimes does nothing and sometimes a window is opened. Clicking on the _main_ story video does cause the window to open but embedded real player does not exist. Instead, RP is opened separately and an error message is produced: Some components are not available... ; that does not seem to be possible since it works in phoenix and worked before. If I start galeon from the CLI, I get: ** (galeon-bin:8616): CRITICAL **: file mozilla-embed.cpp: line 640 (gresult impl_can_go_up(GaleonEmbed*)): assertion `location != NULL' failed ** (galeon-bin:8616): CRITICAL **: file mozilla-embed.cpp: line 640 (gresult impl_can_go_up(GaleonEmbed*)): assertion `location != NULL' failed every time one of the video links is clicked. I checked some other sites and the same message is produced. At Reuters, the 'embedded' video window crashes. Starting mozilla and epiphany from the CLI do not yield any messages even though the result(no video) is the same. I did not find any bugs posted about this here but ,,, This is a major problem for video news junkies. Is there a fix for this? The described behavior would also apply to the standard Mandrake theme, but that one is out of my hands. :) The bug with the login is a part of gdm itself, not the themes (see bug 5075). And I'm not sure if the newline character was parsed before, but you could open a bug upstream (at bugzilla.gnome.org) to try to get it fixed. However, you are absolutely right about the boxes' behavior when too long a string is entered. It has to do with how the entry area is sized and positioned. I will try to fix that for the contrib package, and get back to you here. -- Configure bugmail: http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is. --- Reminder: --- assigned_to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] status: NEW creation_date: description: 1) long strings are not wrapped and the user name box grows to the length of the string which puts the Username part off of the screen. Also, I could not login. Since I could not see what was being entered I do not really know what was happening. 2) the string substitution values %s, %r, %m, %h, \n, etc. are not handled at all. Instead they are printed/displayed literally on the screen. GDM normally displays the string with substitutions correctly. example Welcome string to use: Welcome to %s!\n\nMandrakeLinux Version %r\n with \nmultiple Intel %m CPUs\n and \nLotsofMB SDRAM\n for \n%h.\n\n This is related to the gdm bug that makes a user click twice to config GDM while at the login screen. The new theme Enterprise prevents the ability to do that - either click twice or enter the gdm configurator. User just gets beeps. Because the user(as root) cannot edit the theme and login, the user is forced to a console or to perform a reboot. I have not tested all the new gdm-themes but since the setup is similar, expect all of them to do the same. Those are some very nice backgrounds! and, I like the setup too so please fix this and the gdm 'click-twice' bug.

[Cooker] [Bug 5917] [Hardware] Mandrake does not load on Machines without floppy drive
http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=5917 --- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-23-09 10:29 --- I can't confirm this. My machine doesn't have a floppy drive and I've disabled the floppy controller interrupt in the bios. I can boot with acpi without a crash, but the machine is much slower than with disabled acpi, so I keep it off. I have an ASUS P4PE with the i845pe chip set. -- Configure bugmail: http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is. --- Reminder: --- assigned_to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] status: UNCONFIRMED creation_date: description: Hello, Following bug 4945 and 5877 and thanks to the help of ricksafe.casablanca, it appears that Mandrake Linux does not load on machines with no parellel port when acpi=on. On such machines harddrake always crashes during boot and if harddrake is disabled, the user cannot log on. The fix that was proposed is to remove the lines concerning the parallel port in /etc/modules.devfs. This allows to log in. However, the harddrake service still fails (and hangs the computer). I have tested this on two machines (laptop with no floppy and desktop computer with LS-120). On these machines, neither lspcidrake, not cat /pro/pci hang the computer (with the fix above). Emmanuel

Add OSS is likely to die soon, so why waste effort to support it ? -- do you happen to have a list of cards NOT supported by ALSA but supported by OSS? remove any isa cards (wouldn't run current mandrake) if the number of cards is more than a dozen that would be why likely to die soon is not DEAD (companies survive Chapter 11 you know)

http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=5881 --- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-23-09 11:03 --- Hi John: Thanks. Once again, *nice* work - very attractive bg and style! Yes, the long strings do work with GDM Standard Greeter( newline is parsed ). A couple of years back it also auto-centered the strings but no more or if it does I have not found how it changed so I can make it do it again. I would think that the newline should work with the Graphical Greeter too but have no info to say yea/nay. It might just be a different character but after various attempts I did not find one that worked. Whatever it is, it should be/work the same for both the greeter formats. I knew about 5075 but lost the number - thanks, again. A user, even newbie, is not dumb, when things are explained the simple way : step 1 : OSS, do you hear sound ? step 2: Alsa : do you hear sound ? I think it is not confusing and on the contrary a good way to deal with particular hardware that could not be tested. And it would not be a supplementary step, just the new feature of the Configure button. Moreover, this could be integrated to soundrake : make it clearer about the two kinds of driver and offer a testing procedure for sound. Okay, that sounds better. Still not 100% sure it's necessary, but I certainly wouldn't complain about it. -- adamw

[Cooker] [Bug 5881] [gdm] gdm-themes cannot handle long Welcome strings ++
http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=5881 --- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-23-09 12:17 --- Thanks for the compliments, rj. The backgrounds and icons were done by others, I can only take credit for the layout. I have tried to work with the layout problems, and there isn't anything apparent that I can do. Element sizes use percentages of the login box, and that size is determined by the text. I can't give constraints to make the text wrap.

[Cooker] [Bug 5175] [mc] unacceptably long startup time
http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=5175 --- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-23-09 12:19 --- I have no problem with it working with a mouse, just a big problem for it to depend on a package I don't need. Who said anything about that??? We're just trying to see if it has an effect or not. As I said, it works fine in SuSE 8.1 with no gpm running or even installed. In RedHat 9, I did 'chkconfig --level 2 gpm off' and rebooted to runlevel 2. Mc still works fine there, so I doubt gpm has anything material to do with this bug. Well, who says Redhat and SuSE build mc with gpm support? In comment 25 I said I installed gpm. That put it in /etc/rc.d/init.d, which NAICT means the lack of improvement after installing gpm meant no improvment with gpm running. It having an init script in /etc/rc.d/init.d doesn't necessarily mean it starts at boot, and you didn't say if you had rebooted or not. But it seems like you know more about mc, gpm, mandrake than anyone, and you don't want to try what other people suggest, so I don't see why I should waste my time - hopefully the maintainer can fix this, but mc works fine on all the machines I have tried it on. -- Configure bugmail: http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is. --- Reminder: --- assigned_to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] status: UNCONFIRMED creation_date: description: mc startup has actually been fubar since at least 9.0, possibly before that, but I can't remember. Upon entering mc at shell prompt, the screen is blanked, cursor goes to bottom left, and nothing happens for a while. Eventually, some liblow error messages quickly scroll up the screen too fast to read, and mc becomes ready to use. Hardware is rather old, P200 for rc1, with 128 MB RAM PCI graphics card, but immaterially better on K6/2-500 with 256 MB RAM and same graphics adapter for 9.1, and on a P3-450 with 768 MB RAM and G450 graphics adapter..

Buchan, have *you* tried mc immediately upon boot? That's an *absolute* requirement to see the problem at its extreme. Once a couple minutes or so have passed since boot, the delay is gone. So, yes, I did say, though implicitly, that I had rebooted, since that is how the problem gets seen at all. Buchan, I previously wrote here that the problem exists on many mdk 9.1 and cooker 9.2 installs. It happens/happened on EVERY one I've done, including several of cooker on one machine, and one or more on at least 5 other machines, including yet another of 9.1 only last night, and one that I personally did not do. It simply doesn't matter whether gpm is running or not on any of them. Security (AFAIK) on this cooker box is as follows: 1-During install, the default security level (minimum?) was accepted 2-During install, no users were added after providing the root password 3-After install, one user was added: 'useradd -u 500 someuser', then 'passwd -d someuser' 4-After install, kdebase-kdm was installed and made active via DISPLAYMANAGER=kdm in /etc/sysconfig/desktop. 5-After kdebase-kdm was made login manager, I logged into X as root and configured kdm via KDE Control Center, changing info on tabs Users and Convenience. a-I unhid root. b-I changed User Image Source to User, admin. c-I changed User Images for user someuser to ic-tux.png. d-I changed Preselect User to Previous. e-I checked Focus password. f-I checked the box Enable password-less logins. If you want more info, please tell me how to get what you want. I haven't stopwatched it, but if started immediately upon 1st login after boot, it must be taking at least one minute, a seeming eternity, both in 9.1 and 9.2rc1.
[Cooker] [Bug 5908] [kernel] kernel hang at boot
http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=5908 --- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-23-09 18:44 --- It hangs for me too, but just with kernel 2.4.22-9 (2.4.22-8 and 2.4.22-10 and some older kernels seem to work fine). And I have neither a laptop or a firewire disk ! This *big* bug was introduced with some package updated after 20/09/2003 (if my memory is good) on Mandrake Cooker (ftp://sunsite.uio.no/pub/unix/Linux/Mandrake/Mandrake-devel/). -- Configure bugmail: http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is. --- Reminder: --- assigned_to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] status: UNCONFIRMED creation_date: description: On my dell inspiron 8000, kernel 2.4.22-10 hangs at boot just after echoing freeing 176 Ko of memory. With 2.4.22-7 : boot is fine, apmd run fine (transition for ac to battery is all right), firewire disk works with a the serialise_io sbp2 option. With 2.4.22-9 : boot is fine, apmd hangs (transition for ac to battery hangs the system ), firewire disk works with a the serialise_io sbp2 option. With 2.4.22-10 : the system hangs just after echoing freeing 176 Ko of memory. With the multimédia branch : firewire disk doesn'nt work at all, even with the serialise_io sbp2 option.

[Cooker] [Bug 5175] [mc] unacceptably long startup time
http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=5175 --- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-23-09 18:46 --- output of ps is not usefull, as it doesn't show cpu usage of each apps. Try running top in another console and check yourself if an app is slowing your CPU (but I'm not sure it is the case).
