[Coworking] Re: foursquare classification
Hey Brian! I messaged Foursquare and they were VERY helpful with getting me set up with claiming our space here in St. Louis! For anyone else who is still having difficulty claiming their space, just submit a new support ticket through their site, they were very prompt with me! We have a free drop-in day after 2 checkins special up where even when folks check in for our events they can work toward a free day! We have not had anyone take us up on it yet, but we haven't really tried to push it out very much. Promotion of a checkin special is key! The app is designed to: - Be a mobile database of all coworking spaces worldwide - Allow people to find coworking spaces in their city or in cities they visit - Help coworking spaces find new members The app will be submitted very shortly, within the next two weeks. We hope that eventually it can become a way to identify and communicate with other people who believe in the coworking movement and are a part of it! I have started a coworking space in Oosterhout, the Netherlands. We are in the south, below the rivers, very near Breda and Tilburg and not all that far from Eindhoven. Though with the eternal construction I doubt many will make the commute fromt here. Our model is a little different from many, because our space is, well, a part of our home. I live in an at least-400 year old farmhouse and what was formerly (probably) the stable has long since been converted into office space, which we rent. The smaller office came free and I decided to rent it to myself and open it as a coworking space. So we are rather like a bed and breakfast for business. We have chosen to be cosy and intimate rather than large and shiny; it's my preference anyway and really, anything else just doesn't suit the space. I will show you pictures and bore you half to death telling you about our place as soon as the webpage is up. To be fair, the holdup was that I needed to take pictures, which had to wait until it was painted and so on. Now that is done and I expect we will go live very soon. [Coworking] Re: Coworking Comes to St. Louis!
Wow, thank you, Tony! We are under a very aggressive time constraint to at least show that this is a concept that could be profitable. It's a bit nerve-wracking and yes, right now we don't have one magnet out in the community attracting those who are like-minded into the space, but the space is really unique, industrial-artsy and very open, so by itself encourages or discourages a lot of the the right and wrong types of folks from wanting to participate. 1) There is one small community housed by one of our business' existing contacts, actually! And another space is being renovated to open sometime relatively soon but I am not sure when. It's amazing how devoid St. Louis is of coworking! It seems like we really are often the last in the country to get on board with great ideas, ha. 2) What you said about the community being shaped by the business is a factor that I had not defined and thank you for helping me see that. We have our own vision for the space but it must dance in accordance with the personality and responsibility already in place. Also yes, our agency has many connections with the type of folk that could really benefit from this space so we're hitting the pavement with them! 3) Thank you for this, I definitely plan on opening it up and showing people what's going on! I will have to use more discretion than I would with an independent space, however, because of the more formal reputation of the greater business we are within. Thank you so much for the very specific pointers and the well-wishes, they are greatly appreciated! I will now be in this group frequently to give updates and, I'm sure, look for some support on this awesome new rollercoaster! Best, Jenn On Jul 29, 10:53 pm, Tony Bacigalupo tonybacigal...@gmail.com wrote: Congrats Jenn! St Louis has been due. Your biggest challenge starting off will be cultivating the proper community quickly to make use of the space. I don't know what kind of time pressure you're under to ramp the space up to a minimum level of activity, but if you can take the necessary time to develop the community organically it will pay off in the long run. A few notes: 1. Are there existing coworking-type communities you could join up with? A Jelly or similar group already doing something? 2. Your agency likely already has connections to potential coworkers (vendors, coworkers, clients, friends)... is the plan to start with them and spread from there? Community-within-a-business means that the community's personality is going to be shaped by that of the business. Focus on what that identity is and who fits in with that the best. 3. Open up as much as you possibly can. Share everything you're doing. Tweet, blog, twitpic, whatever. Get people engaged. The more your (potential) members get to participate in the development of your space and community, the better everything will be. Best of luck! Hi Jodi! Thank you so much for taking the time to lay out this list for me, it is so wonderful to see how specific you are and I appreciate your insight on the more midwestern mindset! I know we will have an interesting challenge here with 1) Gasp! A new idea! and 2) the general midwestern penchant for privacy. I used to work at a chain restaurant that originated in California and many people just could not HANDLE how close some of the tables were set in a more west-coast fashion. That's when I first really started seeing it... What made it tough for you in Ft. Wayne? Those same 2 principles? Thanks again for your encouragement and I'm sure I'll be seeing more of you all here and I'll give frequent updates once the floodgates open on Monday! Blog, tweet, friend - being in the midwest, people don't often think shared resources, as we seem to have plenty of them. However, as times are lean and changing fast, the cookies are really crumbling, thus many people are willing to listen. 3. Show your face. Get known by your local economic and civic leaders - It's amazing how many referrals that I have received from the local chamber. I, also, hang out where the cool people hang out - art fairs, festivals, etc. and seen the fruit of my labor. 4. Find your niche. I actually found a large group of film makers in Fort Wayne, most that have returned from NYC and LA, due to the cost of living. Yes, for the $900 that is spent on the closet sized apartment, you can have a four bedroom home in a very nice housing development. From there, I have developed interest. 5. Work hard! This has taken an enormous amount of time and effort, but I would not have it any other way. 6. Ask for help? Tony, Alex, Tara, Susan and many others have been amazingly, helpful! And beyond this board look around your city; I have a number of government officials wanting to meet with me, and help me obtain the crucial contacts. Again, good luck!
