[Coworking] Re: foursquare classification

2010-11-12 Thread Jenn Cloud
Hey Brian!

I messaged Foursquare and they were VERY helpful with getting me set
up with claiming our space here in St. Louis! For anyone else who is
still having difficulty claiming their space, just submit a new
support ticket through their site, they were very prompt with me!

We have a free drop-in day after 2 checkins special up where even when
folks check in for our events they can work toward a free day! We have
not had anyone take us up on it yet, but we haven't really tried to
push it out very much. Promotion of a checkin special is key!

Best,

 Hi everyone,

I am happy to announce that a collaborative project between four coworkers
at pariSoma to build a coworking app is almost finished!  The app will be
called Coworking. This project truly shows the value and importance of
 coworking spaces.

The data we are using is
 *here*https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AoXBCgiLNmuddGdHbld6SENiU1N2
Please feel free to edit your data or submit your space if you don't find
it (*please don't change the format!*). We've collected data for 394
coworking spaces.  A lot of the research began through the coworking wiki
and then extended through web search.  The goal is to keep this data open so
everyone can update their info at any time or add a new space.

 The app is designed to:

 - Be a mobile database of all coworking spaces worldwide

 - Allow people to find coworking spaces in their city or in cities they
 visit

 - Help coworking spaces find new members

The app will be submitted very shortly, within the next two weeks.

We hope that eventually it can become a way to identify and communicate with
other people who believe in the coworking movement and are a part of it!  We
view this as a great way to help make the coworking movement become closer,
as there has been much discussion over this recently on the group (coworking
 blog, coworking conference, etc.).

Feedback is more than welcome and in fact encouraged.  We want to
continue to improve this app and think of other potentials for it.  Please
let us know what you think!  The best way is by contacting us at

So, hi!  I'm Jeannine and I have an entrepreneurship problem. (Er, was
that the wrong group?).  I have started a coworking space in
Oosterhout, the Netherlands.  We are in the south, below the rivers,
very near Breda and Tilburg and not all that far from Eindhoven.
Though with the eternal construction I doubt many will make the
 commute fromt here.

Our model is a little different from many, because our space is, well,
a part of our home. I live in an at least-400 year old farmhouse and
what was formerly (probably) the stable has long since been converted
into office space, which we rent.  The smaller office came free and I
decided to rent it to myself and open it as a coworking space.  So we
are rather like a bed and breakfast for business.  We have chosen to
be cosy and intimate rather than large and shiny; it's my preference
anyway and really, anything else just doesn't suit the space.

I will show you pictures and bore you half to death telling you about
our place as soon as the webpage is up.   To be fair, the holdup was
that I needed to take pictures, which had to wait until it was painted
and so on.  Now that is done and I expect we will go live very soon.

I still need to sign up for the Visa Program and so forth but wanted
 to say hi.  Hi!

it weren't for the discussions and friends made here.

Today is September 1st. That means one thing (ok it means a few things):

*Indy Hall has now been open for business for 3 years.*

Congratulations to all of us for spending the last 3 years (or some subset
thereof) making Philadelphia a better place to make a living doing what we
 love.

I have a lot to say and a lot on my mind and in my heart, but I’m going to
keep it brief for a change and let each of you say your piece instead.

Feel free to use this post and it’s comments to share sentiments,
experiences, visions, excitement, joy, friendship, memories, and whatever
comes to mind when you realize that before 3 years ago today, Indy Hall was
an idea shared by a community, and now it’s one of the greatest things
 Philadelphia has to offer.
 WHERE IS THE PARTY!?!?

For the last 2 years, as well as the re-opening in May of 2007, we’ve thrown
an epic party to commemorate our history of accomplishments.

This year, we’re keeping it low key. I invite everyone to head over to –
where else – National Mechanics tonight after 6:30pm.

Why no epic shindig with lots of hype?

I think we’re a group noted for action. I want a NEW action to celebrate,
rather than a memory of one.

 So let’s plan a MASSIVE multi-product/business/group/whatever launch
party to celebrate some of our NEWEST accomplishments a little later this
fall. You’ll be hearing more about ways to get involved with that in the
 coming weeks.

*That said – National Mechanics – 6:30pm – you know the drill.*

[Coworking] Re: Coworking Comes to St. Louis!

2010-08-12 Thread Jenn Cloud
Hello, all!

Quick update from St. Louis: The space is continuing it's steady roll
of serendipity, we could not be happier with the progress! We have had
one local idea sharing event, 2 fully paid and activated monthly
tenants, 2 partially paid, and about 4 pending payment on start dates!
We have had four paid daily drop-ins and some amazing coverage in St.
Louis blogs! We really ignited last Friday, however, when the St.
Louis Post-Dispatch covered us on the front page of their business
section. We have had all types of folks from realtors to consultants
to designers and even a few startup groups that have come through and
are very interested in signing on with the space.

It's been just tremendous and we are so blessed at how everything
panned out from the space availability to the supporting relationships
to it being the end of summer...we're hoping to keep the momentum
going with the events we are looking to have booked in our space into
the fall!

Tomorrow I am making a pancake breakfast for myself and my Co-Manager,
the building owners and our tenants, one of which has had a
particularly rough week with the IRS, so I hope we can all enjoy that
together!

Thanks for your insight and all the rest of the information contained
in this group, we've been learning so much so fast!

Best,

[Coworking] Re: Coworking Comes to St. Louis!

2010-07-30 Thread Jenn Cloud
Wow, thank you, Tony!

We are under a very aggressive time constraint to at least show that
this is a concept that could be profitable. It's a bit nerve-wracking
and yes, right now we don't have one magnet out in the community
attracting those who are like-minded into the space, but the space is
really unique, industrial-artsy and very open, so by itself encourages
or discourages a lot of the the right and wrong types of folks from
wanting to participate.

1) There is one small community housed by one of our business'
existing contacts, actually! And another space is being renovated to
open sometime relatively soon but I am not sure when. It's amazing how
devoid St. Louis is of coworking! It seems like we really are often
the last in the country to get on board with great ideas, ha.

2) What you said about the community being shaped by the business is a
factor that I had not defined and thank you for helping me see that.
We have our own vision for the space but it must dance in accordance
with the personality and responsibility already in place. Also yes,
our agency has many connections with the type of folk that could
really benefit from this space so we're hitting the pavement with
them!

3) Thank you for this, I definitely plan on opening it up and showing
people what's going on! I will have to use more discretion than I
would with an independent space, however, because of the more formal
reputation of the greater business we are within.

Thank you so much for the very specific pointers and the well-wishes,
they are greatly appreciated! I will now be in this group frequently
to give updates and, I'm sure, look for some support on this awesome
new rollercoaster!

Best,
Jenn

Congrats Jenn! St Louis has been due.

Your biggest challenge starting off will be cultivating the proper community
quickly to make use of the space. I don't know what kind of time pressure
you're under to ramp the space up to a minimum level of activity, but if you
can take the necessary time to develop the community organically it will pay
 off in the long run.

 A few notes:

 1. Are there existing coworking-type communities you could join up with? A
Jelly or similar group already doing something?

 2. Your agency likely already has connections to potential coworkers
(vendors, coworkers, clients, friends)... is the plan to start with them and
spread from there? Community-within-a-business means that the community's
personality is going to be shaped by that of the business. Focus on what
that identity is and who fits in with that the best.

 3. Open up as much as you possibly can. Share everything you're doing.
Tweet, blog, twitpic, whatever. Get people engaged. The more your
(potential) members get to participate in the development of your space and
community, the better everything will be.

 Best of luck!

is so wonderful to see how specific you are and I appreciate your
insight on the more midwestern mindset! I know we will have an
interesting challenge here with 1) Gasp! A new idea! and 2) the
general midwestern penchant for privacy. I used to work at a chain
restaurant that originated in California and many people just could
not HANDLE how close some of the tables were set in a more west-coast
fashion. That's when I first really started seeing it...

What made it tough for you in Ft. Wayne? Those same 2 principles?

Thanks again for your encouragement and I'm sure I'll be seeing more
of you all here and I'll give frequent updates once the floodgates
open on Monday!

Best,
Jenn

Good Luck!  For myself it's been amazingly tough, however I have don't
have time pressures, as I have a great deal with the building owner!
While I am not making money, I am only loosing a few dollars,
 literally!

 Here are my tips:

 1.  Be kind!  Bending over backwards to help others have paid off big
 time.

 2.  Communication is the key!  Blog, tweet, friend - being in the
midwest, people don't often think shared resources, as we seem to have
plenty of them.    However, as times are lean and changing fast, the
cookies are really crumbling, thus many people are willing to
 listen.

 3.  Show your face.  Get known by your local economic and civic
leaders - It's amazing how many referrals that I have received from
the local chamber.    I, also, hang out where the cool people hang out
 - art fairs, festivals, etc. and seen the fruit of my labor.

 4.  Find your niche.   I actually found a large group of film makers
in Fort Wayne, most that have returned from NYC and LA, due to the
cost of living.  Yes, for the $900 that is spent on the closet sized
apartment, you can have a four bedroom home in a very nice housing
development.   From there, I have developed interest.

 5.  Work hard!  This has taken an enormous amount of time and effort,
but I would not have it any other way.

 6.  Ask for help?  Tony, Alex, Tara, Susan and many others have been
amazingly, helpful!   And beyond this board look around your city; I
have a number of government officials wanting to meet with me, and
help me obtain the crucial contacts.

Again, good luck!  It's been a hellish journey at times, but the
people I have met through this have literally changed my life for the
 better!
