US 'hero' may have triggered Mazar revolt

ONDON: The United Nations has joined human rights groups in
demanding an urgent inquiry into the carnage at the Qala-i-Jhangi
fort near the northern Afghan city of Mazar-i-Sharif, even as new
information is emerging about how it started and the two Pakistani
Taliban reported to be the last men alive in the fort, until the
violence finally subsided on Wednesday.
Even as the CIA saluted its slain colleague, the first American
fatality in Afghanistan, American hero Johnny Mike Spann, who
died in the prison revolt, British journalists in Mazar-i-Sharif have
begun reporting that Spann was less an innocent victim than the one
who allegedly provoked the riot.
With allegations of war crimes against the US and UK coming in thick and fast for
ignoring the Geneva Convention on the treatment of prisoners of war, United Nations
High Commissioner for Human Rights Commisioner, Mary
Robinson, has echoed Kate Allen, director of the London-based Amnesty International in
calling for an urgent inquiry.
Amnesty has said it is willing to send an observer to Afghanistan to monitor an
inquiry.
On Wednesday night, the BBCs authoritative domestic television programme Newsnight
interviewed Oliver August, correspondent for The Times, London, in Mazar-i-Sharif, who
said that Spann and his CIA colleague, Dave, were
thought to have set off the violence by aggressively interrogating foreign Taliban
prisoners and asking, Why did you come to Afghanistan?. August said their questions
were answered by one prisoner jumping forward and an
nouncing, Were here to kill you.
The Guardians Mazar-i-Sharif correspondent said the CIA operatives had apparently
failed on entering the fort to observe the first rule of espionage: keep a low
profile.
The Timess August said Spann subsequently pulled his gun and his CIA colleague shot
three prisoners dead in cold blood before losing control over the situation.
Spann was then kicked, beaten and bitten to death, the journalists said, in an
account of the ferocity of the violence that lasted four days, leaving more than 500
people dead and the fort littered with bodies, shrapne
l and shell casings.
Meanwhile, graphic reports are appearing of two Pakistani Taliban fighters final
stand in the fort, alongside comments from the Northern Alliance that the dead
prisoners were the most hardline of Osama Bin Ladens al-Qae
da recruits.
The revelations, which may be a public relations disaster in the making for the
Pakistani establishment, say that the two men, who survived 72 hours of targeted
American bombing and missile strikes, were heard speaking Ur
du.
Long after hundreds of their comrades were dead, according to one newspaper, the pair,
dressed in flimsy salwar-kameezes, remained hidden in a deep basement in the fort and
it took several rockets to restore the fort to a
tomb-like silence.
In the aftermath of the bloodbath at Qala-I-Jhangi, the British press has focussed on
graphic images, including what they are calling the blatant defiance of the rules of
war. One photograph, plastered across several pape
rs, allegedly shows a Northern Alliance fighter using a long metal spike to prise out
a dead Taliban soldiers gold tooth. The Independent newspaper sardonically headlined
its report, How our Afghan Allies applied the Ge
neva Convention in an indication that the US-led, UK-backed
coalition may now be doomed to launch urgent rearguard action to
quell public distaste about the conduct of Tony Blairs just war for
a just cause.
Amnesty International has highlighted public concern by demanding an
investigation into the proportionality of the response by the
Northern Alliance, US and UK forces.
In a statement released here, it said the enquiry should make urgent
recommendations to ensure that other instances of surrender and
holding of prisoners do not lead to similar disorders and loss of
life.

Every news commentator, every Hollywood star, every newspaper editorialist, and every Member of Congress under the age of 65 who has never served in the military and who demands that the draft be reinstated, should be drafted first the 18-year olds last. Since the Pentagon says they don't need draftees, these new recruits can be the first to march to the orders of the general in charge of homeland security. For those less robust individuals, they can do the hospital and cooking chores for the rest of the newly formed domestic army. This is not necessary if one can identify the target the enemy and then stay focused on that target. It's impossible to keep one's eye on a target and hit it if one does not precisely understand it and identify it. In pursuing any military undertaking, it's the responsibility of Congress to know exactly why it appropriates the funding. Today, unlike any time in our history, the enemy and its location remain vague and pervasive. In the undeclared wars of Vietnam and Korea, the enemy was known and clearly defined, even though our policies were confused and contradictory. Today our policies relating to the growth of terrorism are also confused and contradictory; however, the precise enemy and its location are not known by anyone. Until the enemy is defined and understood, it cannot be accurately targeted or vanquished. The terrorist enemy is no more an entity than the mob or some international criminal gang. It certainly is not a country, nor is it the Afghan people. The Taliban is obviously a strong sympathizer with bin Laden and his henchmen, but how much more so than the government of Saudi Arabia or even Pakistan? Probably not much. Ulterior motives have always played a part in the foreign policy of almost every nation throughout history. Economic gain and geographic expansion, or even just the desires for more political power, too often drive the militarism of all nations. Unfortunately, in recent years, we have not been exempt. If expansionism, economic interests, desire for hegemony, and influential allies affect our policies and they, in turn, incite mob attacks against us, they obviously cannot be ignored. The target will be illusive and ever enlarging, rather than vanquished. We do know a lot about the terrorists who spilled the blood of nearly 4,000 innocent civilians. There were 19 of them, 15 from Saudi Arabia, and they have paid a high price. They're all dead. So those most responsible for the attack have been permanently taken care of. If one encounters a single suicide bomber who takes his own life along with others without the help of anyone else, no further punishment is possible. The only question that can be raised under that circumstance is why did it happen and how can we change the conditions that drove an individual to perform such a heinous act. The terrorist attacks on New York and Washington are not quite so simple, but they are similar. These attacks required funding, planning and inspiration from others. But the total number of people directly involved had to be relatively small in order to have kept the plans thoroughly concealed. Twenty accomplices, or even a hundred could have done it. But there's no way thousands of people knew and participated in the planning and carrying out of this attack. Moral support expressed by those who find our policies offensive is a different matter and difficult to discover. Those who enjoyed seeing the U.S. hit are too numerous to count and impossible to identify. To target and wage war against all of them is like declaring war against an idea or sin. The predominant nationality of the terrorists was Saudi Arabian. Yet for political and economic reasons, even with the lack of cooperation from the Saudi government, we have ignored that country in placing blame. The Afghan people did nothing to deserve another war. The Taliban, of course, is closely tied to bin Laden and al-Qaeda, but so are the Pakistanis and the Saudis. Even the United States was a supporter of the Taliban's rise to power, and as recently as August of 2001, we talked oil pipeline politics with them. The recent French publication of bin Laden, The Forbidden Truth revealed our most recent effort to secure control over Caspian Sea oil in collaboration with the Taliban. According to the two authors, the economic conditions demanded by the U.S. were turned down and led to U.S. military threats against the Taliban. It has been known for years that Unocal, a U.S.

However, recent developments in the case should not be overlooked; an FBI agent filed a complaint last week saying that the September 11th attacks could have been avoided if he had been allowed to continue investigating certain prior terrorist attacks. Also, inside a house in Kabul, Afghanistan, chemical formulas for making explosives were found that referred to Oklahoma. According to Judicial Watch, an active FBI agent filed a complaint last week claiming that the September 11th attacks could have been avoided if he had been allowed to continue pursuing certain terrorist investigations, which were objected by his supervisors. It is speculated that one of the 'certain investigations' was the Oklahoma City bombing. Charles Key, Oklahoma State Representative, commented in regards to the FBI agent's complaint that this is one more revelation from a credible source who has a lot to lose and nothing to gain. There are many unanswered questions in the Oklahoma City bombing investigation and the new developments add to the list of suspicions that the Oklahoma bombing may have been a terrorist attack. The New York Times on November 18th, reported that inside a house, bearing Taliban and Defense Ministry insignia, notes were left behind regarding chemical formulas for making explosives. The Times said, In an apparent reference to the Oklahoma City bombing by Timothy McVeigh, one chemical formula at the defense ministry is annotated in Bosnian, Was used in Oklahoma. This reference to Oklahoma builds up more suspicions in the Oklahoma City bombing case. The media should be looking into this issue. As mentioned, The New York Times did include the Oklahoma reference in a small article regarding what was found in the Afghanistan house, but the Times did not pursue the topic. As well, we have not found that any other media outlet in the U.S. has reported this revelation. The suspicion that a man across the world had a chemical formula referring to Oklahoma has many scenarios. One, this development could serve as more evidence that other bombs, along with the truck bomb made from ammonium nitrate and fuel oil, were used in the Oklahoma City bombing. Many credible people believe that the truck bomb used in Oklahoma could not have singly caused all the damage. David Hoffman, author of Oklahoma City Bombing and the Politics of Terror, said, ...a non-directional, low velocity, fertilizer bomb parked 20 to 30 feet from a modern, steel-reinforced super-structure could not have caused the pattern and degree of damage it did. Samuel Cohen, inventor of the neutron bomb, said, The damage that resulted could not have occurred from a van parked outside... What did-in that building. was an inside job. The government has left many unanswered questions in the Oklahoma case regarding the bomb used and the media has seemed to follow the government. Two, the government could have misinformed the public on what type of material was used. From the beginning of the Oklahoma investigation, the FBI told the public that a truck bomb filled with ammonium nitrate caused the explosion. The chemical formula found in Afghanistan could lead to different results. Third, the man in Afghanistan could have been unreliable and not know what he was talking about. However, this scenario is highly unlikely. According to the New York Times, the chemical formulas left behind in the house clearly showed that they knew how to make crude explosives. Also, the man probably did not plan on abandoning his home and having the U.S. find his notes. Many people in Kabul believed the Taliban would win and the U.S. would not take over. A Pakistani soldier, fighting for the Taliban, left a letter addressed to his aunt saying, Our enemy is not strong; we will win. Given the possible scenarios, the media should not ignore possible new evidence in the Oklahoma City bombing. The New York Times began one article, Trail of clues left behind by Qaeda hints darkly at arms plan. Trails of evidence were left behind, but the Times is missing or ignoring the direction the trials are pointing towards. Why isn't the media picking up on this information? The media believes it is the fourth estate and yet it has either blatantly accepting the government's explanation in the Oklahoma bombing and/or is not doing a good job at investigative reporting. Dear Foreign Policy Therapist,
I don't know what to do. I want to be safe. I want safety. But I have
a terrible problem.
It all began several weeks ago, when I lost several thousand loved
ones to a horrible terrorist crime. I feel an overwhelming need to
apprehend and punish those who committed this unbearably cruel act,
but they designed their crime in such a diabolical fashion that I
cannot do so, because they arranged to be killed themselves while
committing the crime, and they are now all dead.
I feel in my heart that none of these men, however, could possibly have planned this
crime themselves and that another man, who is living in a cave in Afghanistan, must
surely have done so. At any rate I know that some
people he knows knew some of the people who committed the crime and possibly gave them
some money.
I feel an overwhelming need to kill this man in the cave, but the location of the cave
is unknown to me, and so it's impossible to find him.
He's been allowed to stay in the cave, however, by the fanatical rulers of the country
where the cave is, Afghanistan, so I feel an overwhelming need to kill those rulers.
As they've moved from place to place, though, I haven't found them, but I've succeeded
in finding and killing many young soldiers who guarded them and shepherds who lived
near them.
None the less, I do not feel any of the expected closure, and in fact I'm becoming
increasingly depressed and am obsessed with nameless fears. Can you help me?

Dear United States,
In psychological circles, we call your problem denial. You cannot face your real
problem, so you deny that it exists and create instead a different problem that you
try to solve.
Meanwhile, the real problem, denied and ignored, becomes more and more serious. In
your case, your real problem is simply the way that millions and millions of people
around the world feel about you.
Who are these people? They share the world with you - one single world, which works as
a unified mechanism. These people are the ones for whom the mechanism's current way of
working - call it the status quo - offers a lif
e of anguish and servitude. They're well aware that this status quo, which for them is
a prison, is for you (or for the privileged among you), on the contrary, so close to a
paradise that you will never allow their life t
o change.
These millions of people are in many cases uneducated - to you they seem
unsophisticated - and yet they still somehow know that you have played an enormous
role in keeping this status quo in place. And so they know you as
the enemy.
They feel they have to fight you. Some of them hate you. And some will gladly die in
order to hurt you - in order to stop you.
They know where the fruits of the planet, the oil and the spices, are going. And when
your actions cause grief in some new corner of the world, they know about it. And when
you kill people who are poor and desperate, no m
atter what explanation you give for what you've done, their anger against you grows.
You can't kill all these millions of people, but almost any one of them, in some way,
some place or some degree, can cause damage to y
ou.
But here's a strange fact about these people whom you consider unsophisticated: most
of the situations in the world in which they perceive injustice are actually ones in
which you yourself would see injustice if you you
rself weren't deeply involved. Even though they may dress differently and live
differently, their standards of justice seem oddly similar to yours.
Your problem, ultimately, can only be solved over decades, through a radical
readjustment of the way you think and behave. If the denial persists, you are sure
to continue killing more poor and desperate people, causing
the hatred against you to grow, until at a certain point there will be no hope for
you. But it's not too late.
Yes, there are some among your current enemies who can no longer be
reached by reason. Yes, there are some who are crazy. But most are
not. Most people are not insane. If you do change, it is inevitable
that over time people will know that you have changed, and their
feeling about you will also change, and the safety you seek will
become a possibility.

You have broken two major stories concerning President Bush in the last year - both of which have gotten little play here in the U.S. Lets start out by looking back at Florida: Last week, the final report on the Florida recount funded by a consortium of various media outlets was released. They found: Bush would have won if you only recounted the counties the Gore team had requested, Gore would have won if it was statewide. But prior to all this, you reported a story that looked into something that went down before the election that in many ways makes these findings insignificant. What did you find? Palast: Yeah, insignificant. No kidding. Maybe thats what The New York Times sub-heading should be All the news thats insignificant we print. First of all, the story I broke was simple: After looking at my evidence printed in Britain, the Civil Rights Commission said the issue is not the count of the votes in Florida the issue is the no-count. What the commission meant by the no-count is that it looks like maybe 100,000 people, at least 80,000 people, most of them black, were not permitted to vote who had a legal right to vote in Florida. That story was simply not covered in the U.S. press. And that is how the election was won. I reported that story for the main paper of the nation. Unfortunately, it was the wrong nation. I reported that story for the Guardian newspapers of Britain, and its related sister paper The Observer, where I have a column on Sunday. I also reported it for BBC television at the top of the nightly news, but again, it was the nightly news of Britain where they found out who really won that election, just not in the U.S. Heres how they did it: A few months before the election, Katherine Harris office used computer systems to make up a list of people to purge from the voter rolls of people who were supposedly felons people who committed serious crimes and therefore in Florida were not allowed to vote. We now know those lists were as phony as a three-dollar bill. That maybe approximately 90% of the people on those lists, and there were 57,700 people on that list, approximately 90% were not felons and had the right to vote. Surprise, surprise. At least 54% of the names on that list were black. We know that because Florida is one of the few states under the U.S. Civil Rights Act that actually has to track the race of each voter. They used this racial targeting system as a way to target and purge black voters. This was a very sophisticated Jim Crow operation done by computers, completely hidden from the public eye. And when they were asked about it they basically lied. The Governor, the Secretary of State, and the head of the Florida Department of Elections all lied under oath to the U.S. Civil Rights Commission about how that was done. Now that was completely covered in the British and European press. That is one of the reasons why when Bush came over to Europe he was seen as a usurper and a pretender to the presidency - not elected, but a guy who had conducted a sort of racial coup detat. He was not seen as legitimate. The U.S. press did little bits of the story and then buried it. My sister paper the Washington Post, (the Guardian papers co-publish with the Washington Post) did run my story, buried, 7 months after the election. I wrote the story within 3 weeks of the election and they didnt publish it until seven months later, when it didnt really mater. And they only published it because the U.S. Civil Rights Commission

Do this: Enter company name in the box, click blue draw chart button, and a list of exchanges and ticker symbols used for each will be generated. Go back to the input box, enter the Ticker Symbol for the U.S.exchange listed; then click blue draw chart button for a 1-year chart of stock price with volume chart below. Change options above to see a 3-month chart (goes back to just before 9/11 attack) or all data for historic figures. The top chart is share price, the bottom chart volume. Any interesting patterns emerge? Notice the small blue lettering at the top of the chart. You can select SEC to jump off to an index of forms filed by the company with the SEC; here you can select and retrieve forms filed with the SEC. Since we began covering the Carneros Inn project, the number of rats involved in the deal has multiplied, and cronies are popping up like moles at night in a Carneros pasture. But before we begin, we would like to take a moment to make two corrections to our November 7, 2001 issue Its Judge Newsomes Carneros Inn for which apologies are extended. Judge Newsoms name is spelled Newsom, not Newsome. The A-1 Market, after further review of lot line adjustments and other records, is outside of the planned development. On November 19 we determined that Judge Newsom was tipped off about a couple of unique parcels of land in the Carneros exempt from Measure J. Next to these small parcels that total 8.5 acres zoned commercial, a 16.43 acre parcel of land zoned for 23 mobile homes came into play by 1997 -- the Zopfi property. The Zopfi family was represented by Napas largest law firm, Dickenson, Peatman Fogarty in some business matters. One of their cronies provided a loan with the Zopfi family - Loyd D. Gularte, Inc. - as joint investors and they secured a deed of trust on the subject commercial properties on April 18, 1995. The Dickenson firm is prominent on both ends of the line, representing the Zopfi family but also representing the developer Keith Rogal/Carneros Inn LLC in a classic conflict of interest scenario. A recent revelation of this small problem forced Rogal to scamper for legal representation in San Francisco. Could it be that Willie Browns preferred land use firm, also prominent in Montalcino Resort Investments, Inc., Steefel, Levitt Weiss, was hired? As medical emergencies drained the Zopfi assets, a recommendation was made that they file a Petition in Bankruptcy -- Chapter 11-- for reorganization. By 1996, the estate fell under the jurisdiction of Judge Jaroslovskys court in Santa Rosa. Some reorganization, indeed. By February 1997, Gavin Newsom, now confirmed as an investor in the deal and a newly appointed San Francisco supervisor, spouted off to San Francisco Business Times and tipped his hand. A February 24, 1997 article reads: Newsoms other ventures include a proposed Napa County resort, a South of Market loft project and restaurants planned for Los Angeles and London. Now the consummate political player, Gavin immediately cut himself into patronage venues in San Francisco, Napa and elsewhere that flow from the Willie Brown milieu. Fathom that. A proposed Napa County resort and other lofty ideas, while the Zopfi estate was in reorgani- zation, while Carneros Inn developer Keith Rogal hovered around. Financing was provided by Yosemite Mortgage Fund LLC to the Zopfi estate. This financier was conveniently created 9/26/96; its trustee, California Trust Deeds, filed a notice of default against the Zopfi estate 8 months later, on 5/27/97, for a missed payment of $18,900 due 5/1/97. That was fast. The next month, on 6/27/97 like clockwork to force a creditor-driven sale, California Trust Deeds filed again. Obviously, this financier came into being rather suddenly and acted rather swiftly, as though on a mission. Indeed, with the Newsoms clear intention to purchase the commercial properties via Carneros Inn, LLC, could they have not acted more quickly so that the Zopfis might have realized return of their investment on the note they held to otherwise forestall foreclosure by Yosemite on the residential parcel? Instead they appeared to be distracted, setting Keith Rogal up in business 3/21/97, smack dab in the middle of Gavins disclosure and the foreclosure. According to Napa County records, and according to Carneros Inn developer Keith Rogal, the 8.53 acres of commercial property was owned by other parties. In fact, even through hearings August 1, 2001, Rogal insisted property ownership was different but management would be the same for the full 27 acres, a boldfaced blooper per deeds; but honest in another sense. He intends to develop and sell 24 homes despite no approval for a subdivision of sorts or time shares if the land doesnt go with the deal, so yes, other people will own property after he manages the construction and sales of what were supposed to be mobile homes for affordable housing (Click.). On November 30, 2001 The St. Helena Star revealed all of the shenanigans of Rogal with various members of Public Works and the Planning Department who are of late no longer employed by Napa County up to and including the director of planning and one of his assistants. There are no accurate figures on how many civilians have been killed, wounded or maimed in Afghanistan since the US unleashed its military might on October 7, but it undoubtedly runs into the hundreds, perhaps thousands. Millions more Afghans have been displaced, watched family members die or their homes destroyed. Outside of Afghanistan, the most visible sign of the human impact can be seen in this southwestern Pakistani city, close to the border where the war-wounded and others who have run for their lives are found. Doctors at the city's main hospital, the Sandeman Provincial, treat new cases every day and are now running out of a lack of supplies, particularly the metal plates used to repair limbs crushed by falling walls. It became known as Rothschild (red-shield or rotes-schild in German) in the 18th century when a financial dynasty was founded in Frankfurt by Mayer Amschel Rothschild working in league with the Illuminati House of Hesse and others. They took their name from the red shield or hexagram/Star of David on the front of their house in Frankfurt. The Star of David or Seal of Solomon is an ancient esoteric symbol and only became ssociated with Jewish people after the Rothschilds adopted it for themselves. Petherick The role the CIA played in overseeing the kidnapping and torture of several Arabs accused of being members in an international terrorist ring is part of a horrifying account told by a lawyer for the men in a series of reports made public against the wishes of the U.S. government. The backdrop for the men’s story was post-communist Albania. In the early 1990s, communists had outwardly relinquished control over the tiny impoverished country and a new regime took power ready to ally itself with U.S. intelligence agents. In return for allowing the CIA to use brutal—and often illegal—tactics to locate those accused of having knowledge of the inner workings of international terror cells, the new Albanian regime received arms deals and U.S. dollars. “Today, as the Bush administration loosens its interpretations of the rules on foreign assassination and other restraints imposed on the CIA in the 1970s, Amer i ca’s clandestine role in Albania illuminates some of the tactical and moral questions that lie ahead in the global war on terrorism,” reported Andrew Higgins and Christopher Cooper in The Wall Street Journal on Nov. 20. According to Abu-Saada, one of his clients, Shawki Salama Attiya—a forger and an admitted member of Egyptian Jihad—was arrested on June 25, 1988, by Albania’s intelligence agency, known as “SHIK,” while driving in Albania’s capital, Tirana. He was taken several miles outside the city and placed in a holding cell in an abandoned airbase. That same day Albanian police searched Attiya’s home and found forgery equipment used to make fake visas and other documents, according to Higgins and Cooper. A few days later, Attiya found himself on a CIA plane bound for Cairo where he says he was severely tortured and interrogated for weeks. Attiya said he was kept in a tiny cell, often being forced to stand in filthy water up to his knees. He was subjected to electric shocks to his genitals, dragged on his face and severely beaten. Abu-Saada says that most of the other men he represented complained of similar treatment. Each said that after they were arrested in Albania, they were flown to Egypt where Egyptian police routinely applied electrical shocks to their nipples and genitals, and beat them severely, breaking fingers, ribs and faces. ‘AT THE CIA’S BEHEST’ Albanian security officials were forthright about CIA complicity in the monitoring and torture of the Arab men. While Albanian agents did all the dirty work, SHIK officers told Higgins and Cooper, the CIA provided training and expertise to be able to carry out the difficult and often illegal task of tracking individuals suspected of involvement in attacks against their own governments. Fatos Klosi, head of SHIK, told the two journalists that some of his agency’s actions, taken at the CIA’s prompting, were “not so justified legally.” On at least one occasion, Albanian agents visited Lang ley, Va., the home of the CIA, to learn surveillance and other intelligence-gathering techniques. SHIK agents told Higgins and Cooper that every few days, a CIA officer in Albania would pick up recordings of phone conversations between suspects taped on American equipment and send them back to America. The CIA would identify targets and then have the Albanian security officials arrest them. The CIA would then oversee the transfer of suspects to Egypt, where they would be questioned and eventually put on trial. By early 1999, more than 107 people had been rounded up in Albania and tried in one of the largest mass trials ever held in Egypt. Many of the men captured and transferred under the watchful eyes of the CIA were tortured and interrogated, and ultimately sentenced to life in prison or executed. At least 60 more Arabs suspected of involvement in terror networks were tried in absentia and convicted in closed hearings. Located on the Gulf of Siam not far from the Malaysian border, Hat Yai was millions of miles, at least figuratively, from Heers home in Zurich, the starting point of an on-the-lam odyssey that lasted nearly five years. During that time, the 61-year-old former senior Swiss banking officer chugged through Italy, Turkey and Azerbaijan before settling in Thailand. Released from "investigative arrest" in October 1992, Heer fought back, disregarding the Swiss financial fraternity's unwritten vow of silence: he blabbed to U.S., German, Swiss and Italian newspapers about a multitude of convoluted and hair-raising improprieties, irregularities and outright illegalities at the bank, which reached all the way up to Baron Elie and vice chairman/former general manager Alfred Hartmann. Heer launched his opening salvo in November, telling the Swiss paper Sonntagszeitung, "I was part of a criminal system," then proceeding to relate how the Zurich bank, renowned for managing the accounts of Europe's richest families, had routinely concealed the assets of its clients, many of them Italian, by setting up shell corporations under its trusteeship. According to Heer, it worked like this: a client signed over his assets to a trusteesometimes someone at the bank such as Baron Elie, Hartmann or himself, sometimes a dependable outside associatewith the proviso that they could be bought back in the future at an agreed-upon price. Then the assets were transferred to a holding company established by the bank. One such phony firm, the Panama-based Orion, was a popular destination; Orion, in turn, begot offshore subsidiaries for similar purposes. In this way clients avoided taxes and other monetary controls back home, while bank officers, Heer included, netted millions in handsome commissions for services rendered. This, Heer asserted, was standard operating procedure, as were the labyrinthine loans he made to von Wersebe and others. Occasionally foreign tax officials became suspicious. In one case, Heer recalled, he flew to Rome, where he knowingly lied in court in an effort to allay concerns about the true ownership of Italy's sixth-largest insurer. When Baron Elie declined to comply with a similar summons, Heer added, the Italian judges flew instead to London, where the baron plied them with food and drink and falsehoods before sending them on their way singing "For he's a jolly good fellow." Heer also tarred Hartmann, who in addition to his positions at the Zurich bank served as chairman of the Swiss branch of the notorious and now-defunct Bank of Credit Commerce International; Heer alleged that Hartmann used the familiar dummy-company stratagem to funnel BCCI money from Nigeria.

A TORQUEMADA FOR OUR TIMES Anyone who doubts that has only to look at the actions of the Bush administration on the "home front" post-9/11: the establishment of military tribunals to usurp the function of our civilian courts; the passage of the Orwellian "USA PATRIOT Act," which legalizes widespread surveillance of legal political and religious organizations (as well as individuals) and lays the groundwork for a national identity card; the detention of hundreds, who are jailed in secrecy, on secret charges, at the whim of the Attorney General. NO EXEMPTIONS And there is nary a peep of protest: oh, a few old-style liberals, like Nat Hentoff, are raising their voices, but this is lost in the chorus of amens from the "jail 'em first, ask questions later" crowd, which includes plenty of leftists, as well as those on the right. The polls, we are constantly reminded, show Americans overwhelming support the draconian measures being taken by this administration, and, as much as I distrust polls – they exist to be manipulated – this time I believe them. Although support for police state methods is decreasing, most Americans think that they're only going to be rounding up those foreigners – you know, the suspicious-looking ones, with Arabic features and veiled wives. American citizens, they believe, will be exempt. The first hint that this is hardly true came on Saturday [November 30], with the news trumpeted on the front page of the New York Times: "Ashcroft Seeking to Free FBI to Spy on Groups." Ashcroft, we are told by "senior government officials," is "considering" a scheme to "relax" (read: ignore) "restrictions on the FBI's spying on religious and political organizations in the United States." AMERICA'S POLITICAL POLICE These restrictions, enacted by Congress in the 1970s, were imposed in response to the evolution of J. Edgar Hoover's FBI into America's political police. Before World War II, Franklin Delano Roosevelt used them to spy on his enemies, notably the conservative antiwar group known as the America First Committee, and this tradition of wartime repression was revived during the Vietnam war era. The left-led antiwar movement was targeted by the feds, who unleashed the FBI to conduct the infamous "Cointelpro" operation – designed to infiltrate, disrupt, and discredit domestic dissident organizations. Of course, this had been standard operating procedure since the beginning of the Cold War era: it was a standing joke, during the fifties, that half the membership of the American Communist Party was on the FBI payroll – and a good deal of the other half was only waiting to be asked. THE FEDS AND CHE GUEVARA It was during the course of a very unpopular war, however, that the routine outrages perpetrated by America's political police became widely known and disdained. At one point, they infiltrated the Socialist Workers Party, a Trotskyist organization, in such numbers that they practically took it over, actively encouraging a "Fourth Internationalist" faction which emulated Che Guevara and advocated armed guerrilla warfare in Central and South America (if not quite yet in the North). They then turned around and justified their surveillance and infiltration tactics on the grounds that the Socialists Workers were, after all, a potentially violent organization. CALL ME INDISPENSABLE In "Cointelpro" the conservative-libertarian critique of government as the source of the problem, rather than the solution, was vividly illustrated – although hardly appreciated at the time – when it came out that federal agents and local "red squad" officers acted mainly to provoke extremist violence rather than prevent it. I would hold that this was not an "abuse" of the system, but it's logical outcome: if no problem exists, it is necessary to create one. A former Professor, supposedly adept in economics and banking, Senator Gramm has been the Chairman of the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, and member of the Budget and the Finance Committees. He has blocked laws against money laundering. Convenient to the Enron mess, he decided ahead of time not to run for re-election. For some twelve years during the Reagan/Daddy Bush Administrations, Wendy was Chairperson of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. As a highly corrupt federal regulatory agency, CFTC wields great power and influence over markets, often little understood by common Americans. Spreading out in the 1980s worldwide was the Bank of Credit and Commerce International, BCCI. Some called them, with their hundreds of branches round the world, the Bank of Crooks and Criminals International. They were actually a huge money laundry for political assassination and dirty tricks funding, as well as espionage proprietaries, for the American CIA, British MI-6, French CIA, and The Mossad of Israel. BCCI had or were planning some five branches in the U.S. For their U.S. agenda, they needed to put the arm on the U.S. government. Elsewhere in the world, BCCI had already honed the real world specialty of buying and bribing public officials. BCCI as a foreign entity not only dealt in secret transactions in banking but were a highly mostly covert player on the world markets, particularly the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, the Chicago Board of Trade, and on markets such as LIFFE in London. Through six La Salle Street brokers, BCCI bribed and blackmailed its way into the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. Key law-makers were invited to come to Chicago, all expenses paid, to supposedly give a speech for the CME, or "Merc" as some call it, and the CBOT. While in the Windy City, the law-makers were informed that their hosts, the market honchos, were opening "courtesy" accounts for them. And, that they would be informed of the good results that developed. In some instances, the so-called "courtesy" account was not told to the Representatives and Senators, but was set up in their name anyway as a blackmail device on the date of their Chicago visit. Through a hocus-pocus series of transactions, the Chicago accounts showed a supposed loss while the London acounts showed a huge profit. In the lingo of the markets, it was called a "straddle". The Senators and Congressmen themselves, or most often their known agents, from time to time personally picked up the huge profits in London. On other occasions, someone identifying themselves with credentials as their known agents, likewise picked up the heavy profits from the "courtesy" accounts, in the British money center. It was either a direct provable bribery payment to the law-makers or verifiable record-kept blackmail. Either way, twenty five per cent of both houses of the American legislature were "hooked". By the time BCCI supposedly collapsed in the summer of 1991, some five billion dollars had disappeared. It was used in great part to buy, that is, to bribe, 28 U.S. Senators and 108 members of the U.S. House of Representatives. The Bank of England, by a series of circumstances, became the kingpin in supervising and overseeing the supposed demise of BCCI. For only thirty days, the Bank of England had as an open record, the list of those bought and bribed, whether directly or through the blackmail devices, of the legislative branch of the U.S. Government. A major media correspondent got wind of this and before secrecy was clamped on the records, got a copy of the entire list of bribery/blackmail. Part of one of the largest media operations worldwide, he went to his media editor with the details. The editor was thunder-struck. Bin Laden was interviewed September 28th by a pro-Taliban newspaper. Here's a summary:
"In an interview with 'Ummat' -- a publication sympathetic to Afghanistan's ruling Taliban -- bin Laden said both he and al Qaida had 'nothing to do with the terrorist attacks in America' and that 'hard-line Jewish organizations might be involved¦'
"Ummat said it sent questions to bin Laden through Taliban officials, and received written responses. Bin Laden reportedly said in his replies that dozens of terrorists organizations from countries like Israel, Russia, India and Serbia could be responsible for the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon that left over 6,000 people dead or missing.
He also insisted that al Qaida does not consider the United States its enemy¦" ('United Press International,' 28 September 28, 2001, Friday)
This interview was seized on by those opposed to bombing Afghanistan. They noted that terrorists always take credit for their murders. Indeed, the whole point of terror is to take credit. How else can the terrorists intimidate the target group and force them to flee, give up, change their political allegience or make concessions to terrorist demands?
Since bin Laden wasn't taking credit, how, asked critics, could anybody be sure he was behind the WTC attacks? And if nobody could be certain he was behind the attacks why was the U.S. so anxious to 'counter'attack against Afghanistan?
Now bin Laden has issued a speech which he recorded on videotape. This speech has been broadcast on TV. Transcripts have been published in major newspapers. His picture is on the front page of the 'NY Times,' holding a microphone, looking like a maniacal crooner.
This is in itself remarkable. As opponents of the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia and the U.S.-supported, Kosovo Liberation Army attacks on that country will testify, it is virtually impossible for people critical of U.S. foreign policy to get their views presented in major newspapers or on TV in the U.S.
But here is bin Laden, front page and prime time.
And mind you, he's no longer saying, "Russia, India, Serbia and Israel" did it, or "America is not the enemy." Rather, his expressed views have altered:
"God Almighty hit the United States at its most vulnerable spot. He destroyed its greatest buildings. Praise be to God. Here is the United States. It was filled with terror from its north to its south and from its east to its west. Praise be to God...
"But if the sword falls on the United States after 80 years, hypocrisy raises its head lamenting the deaths of these killers who tampered with the blood, honour, and holy places of the Muslims.
When Almighty God rendered successful a convoy of Muslims, the vanguards of Islam, He allowed them to destroy the United States. I ask God Almighty to elevate their status and grant them Paradise." (1)
Quite a change.
The 'Times' commented:
"Within hours of the first American bombs dropping on Afghanistan, the world's most wanted man, Osama bin laden, appeared in a videotape broadcast, worldwide in which he taunted the United States and celebrated the Sept 11 terrorist attacks.
Allow me to remind you, Osama bin Laden's tape was not broadcast worldwide by Osama bin Laden, nor by chance. Rather, it was broadcast worldwide by the mainstream mass media, that is, by the conscious effort of bin Laden's supposed enemies.
The 'Times' described Mr. bin Laden's performance as "an evident attempt to rally the entire Islamic world against the United States."
I beg to differ.
By providing this videotape at this time, bin Laden has given the mass media an effective and timely argument to justify bombing Afghanistan and perhaps other countries.
The other day the British government published a document purporting to prove bin laden was behind 9-11. In fact, the document proved no such thing. Rather, it listed some horrific crimes in which he was involved, or probably involved, prior to 9-11, and it repeated various violent things he purportedly said. (Conspiracy Nation, 12/03/01) -- In a report issued yesterday, independent journalist Sherman Skolnick delved into the collapse of the energy giant called Enron. Other information on the debacle casts further light on the situation.
Enron, writes Skolnick, a veteran investigator of secret corruption, was the seventh largest of the so-called Fortune 500. The massive nature of the Enron collapse is corroborated by a Bloomberg wire service story issued coincident to Skolnick's report. In the Bloomberg report, Peter Chapman, president of Bankruptcy Creditors Service Inc., is quoted as saying, "If Enron were a sovereign nation, it would be the 30th-largest in the world between Egypt and Malaysia." Also coincident with the Enron meltdown is the imminent collapse of the Argentine economy. On December 2nd, the nation of Argentina edged closer to bankruptcy. After financial analysts had warned of a collapse, the Argentine government stepped in and limited bank customers' cash withdrawals to $250 per week. This led to runs on banks and an explosive atmosphere in that South American country.
The temptation is to jokingly suggest, "Perhaps Osama bin Laden is to blame." Yet the latest issue of Time magazine eerily foresees, "as the U.S. looks beyond Afghanistan for its next target in the war on terror, one part of the world that has received relatively scant attention is South America." It seems, according to Time magazine, that Osama's Gang is lurking in a "tri-border area, where Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay meet." ("A Terror Threat From The South," Time magazine, 12/10/01)
Also eerie is how Osama's Gang has been paired with the ongoing financial earthquake which began coincident with the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Obliterated has been Enron's 401(k) plan, causing consequent suffering amongst Enron employees who unwisely invested -- "unwisely invested", or were suckered into the plan by management salesmanship. Imagine Enron employees summoned to meetings where they watch a corporate video extolling the Enron 401(k) plan. Money from employee investors coincidentally boosts stock values of mighty Enron, for awhile. "In 2000, the Vatican ... issued a proclamation called Dominus Jesus ("Jesus Rules") that seemingly overturned four decades of ecumenical dialog and Catholic acknowledgement of the possible validity of other spiritual paths. It declared that Jesus and the Catholic Church were the only possible means of spiritual salvation, and that other Christian churches "are not `churches' in the proper sense."

This is noteworthy because Robert Hannssen, who provided US state secrets to the Soviets for 15 starting during the reign of Bush I, and former FBI Director Louis Freeh, Hannssen's good friend, are both members of the secretive right wing which backed Pope John Paul II in his campaign to become pope. Freeh's brother was director of an Opus Dei center in Pittsburgh.

Interesting timing for Bush Jr. to be making a visit to the Vatican (7/01). This is the same president who took the entire month of August 2001 "off," could not name the president of Pakistan after a coup there and chose to read the story of a goat to schoolchildren instead of respond to the crashing of two commercial jetliners into NYC's World Trade Center towers.
Bush Sr. has also made at least two trips to visit with the pope since 1992, the most recent being in 1997. A review of US history will show that there have only fourteen meetings between a sitting US president and a pope.

I am posting and writing about this article for two reasons. First, it includes some useful information about the Nazi-CIA marriage. Second, it presents that information from a perspective that I consider at once mistaken and widespread; hence worth discussing. The article was written by Martin Lee. Mr. Lee argues that after World War II, Nazi spies duped the U.S. into hiring them, thereby protecting themselves and their networks from prosecution. He cites the example of General Reinhard Gehlen. Gehlen had been chief of Nazi intelligence in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. The best definition the Zionists have offered so far is actually a genetic one, which seems a strange contradiction when Zionists and their supporters and mouthpieces so vehemently deny that Jewishness has anything to do with race. They ask, who is your mother? Anyone born of a Jewish mother is Jewish. However, the question as to what makes her "Jewish" has no answer. If one’s father is Jewish, if he is even a rabbi,will not help at all. Nor will a man's profession of faith in Judaism be of any use,for Judaism does not court converts and Israel does not want citizens who are not Jews. Indeed, one would be affronted, even today in the year 2001,when some rabbis so readily argue that "Jewish blood is redder than non-Jewish blood," which also implies that a Jewish life ispreferred over a non-Jewish life. In short, it is a brash racism whose macabre practical implications are seen every day on the streets of the West Bank and in the refugee camps of Gaza. Zionist myth-makers have not gone unchallenged. For years,courageous anti-Zionist Jews have been trying, against insurmountable odds, to refute the Zionist myth that Jews are a race, and that a Jew remains Jewish irrespective of faith in any religion. But the Zionist voice was always (and continues to be) louder and more vociferous as the Zionist-controlled printed and electronic media in the U.S. and Western Europe were always at the Zionists' beck and call. Now, there is very bad news for the Zionists and those who lied to themselves and to mankind for so many years claiming that Jews were a distinct genetic people unlike any other people. A recently published keynote research paper, authored by the noted geneticist Professor Antonio Arnaiz-Villena of Compultense University in Madrid, showed beyond any shred of doubt that Middle Eastern Jews and Palestinians are genetically almost identical. The study found no data to support the idea that Jewish people were genetically distinct from other people in the region, thus challenging the concept that Jews are a special, chosen ethnic people and that Judaism can only be inherited. Predictably, Zionist circles were enraged by the scientific findings that exposed their age-old lie, and as soon as the study appeared in the scientific journal, "Human Immunology,"they bullied the journal editor, Nicole Suci-Foca, of Colombia University, New York, to drop the study, claiming the article was politically biased! Now, what implication does all of this have on the Palestinian Question? Nobody expects the Zionists to stand up tomorrow and admit publicly and in a clarion manner that they have been wrong all along, that they made a big mistake or, indeed, that they will seek to undo or at least atone for the wrongs done to the Palestinians, thanks to Zionist mythology.
