 THE ROAD MAP CONSPIRATORS

We have heard that sometime in late December,
those who conspire to re-partition Israel into two

States will meet to further their plans. One
cannot help but be reminded of the Wannsee
Conference
assembled in Berlin, January 20, 1942 by Reinhard
Heydrich to plan the Final Solution to the Jewish

Question, i.e. extermination of 11,000,000 Jews
of Europe and Great Britain - according to
instructions from Hermann Goering.

So many Conferences over the centuries were
dedicated to conquering, expelling or eliminating
the
Jewish people: the Romans, the Church of the
Inquisition, Queen Isabella and the Court of Spain

before the expulsion of the Jews in 1492, the
meeting of the Crusaders to expel the Arab
Saracens and
the Jews from their Holy Land. The meetings and
planning sessions after the 1948 Partition of
Israel
by Egypt, Iran and Syria to expel the Jews from
the Land promised by and made Holy by G-d and the
work they did to make it bloom - and, therefore,
now desirable.

So many meetings - so many claimants - so many
perfidious reasons to expel the Jews. Is there
something wrong with intelligent but crafty men
assembling in conspiracies to adjust and possibly
eliminate the presence of an ancient people who
first distinguished One G-d from the idols and
panoply of gods four thousand years ago? Is this
then the bedrock of Jew hatred, the simple fact of

disposing of their idols and bringing Biblical Law
to this planet to constrain our worst instincts?

Are these `intelligent' men ready to please a
primitive, intolerant culture called Islam which
is well
known for its tendency to think of their history
in terms of conquest and conversion by the sword
or
more recently with Genocidal bombs, blowing up
buildings with aircraft and threatening all
civilization with NBC (Nuclear, Biological and
Chemical) weapons?

We see an assemblage of the worlds' countries,
washed up like trash on the shores of New York
into a
building called the United Nations. This is only
one element of the so-called Quartet (the American

State Department, the United Nations, the European
Union and Russia) who plan to decide the fate of
the Jewish State. Of course, inclusive in the mix
are the Europeans who rounded up their own Jews
and gave them over to Hitler's Death Camps and
then pounced upon their properties like hyenas who

eat the dead. Remember, too, that the Russians
slaughtered their Jews before Stalin and after.

Of course, they all still hate the Jews and are
important members of the `Quartet' designing
Israel's
future.

We cannot forget the Germans, who have deep
experience in separating the Jews from their lives
and
property. Like the French but more efficient in
disposing of Jewish property, they took Jewish
hair,
glasses, clothes, gold in their teeth,
occasionally even their skin for lamps and book
bindings. Well,
you get the idea.

Now enter the Arabist U.S. State Department. Here
we have men in suits who do not exactly like the
Jews. In fact, they like the Arabs a lot more -
or, at least, their oil resources and market for
weapons.

It is highly unlikely that Israel will receive
fair treatment from this Quartet cabal,
considering their
well-documented past and present hostility, as
well as their vested financial interests in the
Arab oil
markets.

So what is the reward for once again selling Jews
to the Arabs? Oil, Trade, Banking, Shipping,
Building infrastructure for Arab/Muslim countries?
A portion of that black gold pot is enough for any

scoundrel to sell his mother, let alone the Jewish
nation.

THE ISRAELI CONNECTION

Let us now ask Shimon Peres and Yossi Beilin about
any role they might be playing in developing the
Road Map of the Bush Administration and the
Quartet. Check out Shimon Peres' creation, The
Peres Center for Peace. And look into Yossi
Beilin's The Economic Cooperation Foundation.

As yet, unsubstantiated reports claim that these
two men have moved their organizations and,
therefore, their respective economic bases of
operations to Europe. There is concern that such a
move
could be interpreted as an attempt to avoid full
and transparent disclosure of incoming funds to
meet
Israel's laws on not-for-profit organizations.
Certainly, such speculation could be put to rest
by these
organizations opening all their books to forensic
accountants.

It is thought that each is continuing the Oslo
programs they initiated, in linkage with the
Quartet and
now the infamous Road Map. One might presume their
motive is that they wish to avoid having to
report cash flow from Europe to the Israeli Courts
and Tax Institutes and to NOT publicize what these

funds may be used

All utopias are murderous; radical, apocalyptic, universalist utopias
are
genocidal

The interviewer, a young Egyptian woman, Doua Amer (IQRA Arab TV, May
7),
was charming. She introduced the interview by admonishing every Muslim
woman strictly to observe the only true religion.

Then she turned to little Basmallah, aged three and a half: Do you
know
about the Jews? Yes. Do you like the Jews? No. Why? Because
they are apes and pigs ... a Jewish woman tried to poison our Prophet
Muhammad. A wonderful example of the kind of humanistic education
that
radical Muslims endow their small children with.

Islam is not a murderous religion, and Muslims are no different from
Christians, Jews, Buddhists, or Confucians. But there arose among
them,
in the last 50 years or so, a new interpretation of Islam, a radical
theology that has been spreading like cancer among the 1.2 billion or
so
Muslim believers in the world, or about a fifth of humanity. Where
does
it come from? What does it say?

There are conservative, fundamentalist, trends in all religions.
They
tend to be exclusionary, arguing that anyone who does not share their
faith is destined to roast in hell. They are fanatic in their beliefs,
and try to convert everyone else to their particular dogma. They
believe
in the literal interpretation and absolute truth of every word of
their
sacred texts.

In Christianity, there are the radical evangelical sects, and the
right-wing Catholics; in Judaism, the haredi and Zionist-religious
fanatics; in Hinduism, the radicals who want to turn Indian democracy
into an exclusivist Hindu society. In Islam, there are religious
conservatives such as the Wahabis, who in the 18th century founded the
belief system governing modern Saudi Arabia.

The radical Islamists are different. They are a modern phenomenon,
founded in Egypt by Hassan el-Banna in 1928, and given an extreme
ideology by Sayyed Qutb, a man who had spent some time in the US, and
had
come back convinced that the West was degenerating, and that the time
had
come for Islam to conquer the world. Qutb published his brochures in
the
Fifties and early Sixties, until he was executed by the Nasserist
regime
in 1966 because his teachings argued against the existence of
Egyptian,
and for that matter any other, Arab nationalism.

Radical, totalitarian Islamists demand that the existing Arab national
states should become Islamized, governed by religious (shari'a) law,
not
by constitutions, and certainly not by democratic institutions
reflecting
the will of a majority. The rulers would be those who are experts in
Islamic law.

The aim is to conquer the world and make it Islamic, and an important
step towards that goal is the toppling of the existing Arab national
regimes. The final result would be a utopia of a peaceful mankind,
ruled
by Islamic religious experts.

Qutb also declared that the Jews were a main enemy of Islam, and
should
be destroyed. The cause of all this may well be the frustration of a
society that has fallen behind because of its inability - though
attempts
were made to overcome it - to change its rigid traditional and
cultural
patterns in order to enable middle-class individualism to develop
democratic institutions and scientific and economic progress. The
ensuing
mass poverty has apparently caused members of the intelligentsia and
upper classes to develop radical Islamism, and recruit the foot
soldiers
for its totalitarian agenda.
Qutb was followed by others, most of them Egyptians; however, one of
the
important teachers of radical Islam was Abul Ala el-Maududi, a
Pakistani
(died in 1979). The teachings spread. In Saudi Arabia, radical Islam
became a real danger for the corrupt, absolutist Saudi dynasty as it
accused the ruling family of betraying real Islamic values. It was
out
of this cauldron that Osama bin Laden, and the 15 Saudis who were
among
the 19 terrorists on September 11, emerged.

The Egyptian and most other radical Islamists are Sunni. Parallel to
them, the Khomeini revolution took place in Shi'ite Iran. Some
observers
believe that the Iranian regime is moving towards moderation; yet even
they will agree that the radical conservatives are still in power and
are
vigorous in their attempts to prevent any such development from taking
root.
Trying to destabilize the West, Sunni and Shi'a radicals have now been
cooperating. There is no center to which all these groups owe loyalty
-
one of the novel things about this phenomenon is the fact that it is
the
ideology that is common, whereas the organizational structure is
diffuse.
There are more than a dozen radical groups in Algeria, and an even
larger
number in Kashmir; but they maintain loose associations between them,
and
regard each other as brothers-in-arms; almost all, if

On the face of it, Thursday's murders of yet another nine Israelis
including two children was just another day, albeit an exceptionally
gruesome one, in the ongoing war of terror being waged against us.

In fact, the attacks in Mombasa, Kenya, and in Beit She'an represent a
tactical escalation and a strategic turning point in this war.
Tactically, the terrorists have taken their battle to the air,
targeting
a civilian aircraft laden with returning tourists. Strategically,
these
attacks have targeted not merely the State of Israel, but what it
embodies and its enemies detest: freedom.

Firing missiles at a civilian aircraft, as the terrorists did
unsuccessfully in Kenya, is not only an attack on Israelis, it is an
attack on mankind's freedom of movement. And spraying bullets a line
of
voters, as terrorists did in Beit She'an, where members of the Likud
were
electing their prime-ministerial candidate, is an attack on the
Western,
democratic way of life.

Never mind that an attack such as that in Beit She'an is impossible to
launch anywhere in the Arab world, where all leaders are
self-appointed
and all political leadership is authoritarian at best, totalitarian at
worst. Ever since the current war erupted more than two years ago, a
majority of Israelis have concluded that the Palestinian leadership
never
intended the kind of a deal that Oslo's architects had in mind. In a
somber reminder of just how dramatically events have turned, three of
those wounded in Beit She'an were sons of MK David Levy. Hard as it is
to
believe, it's been barely three years since Levy, then foreign
minister
in Ehud Barak's government, formally launched the final-status talks.
How
disillusioned we have become since then.

The more we have been attacked by suicide bombers and gunmen first
with
the Palestinian Authority's blessing, then with its sponsorship, and
finally with its micro-management the more we have realized that the
enemy's cause is neither about statehood nor about honor, but about
upholding dictatorship. Peace, replete with open borders and free
trade
as the Oslo Accords envisioned, would inspire the Palestinians to
demand
Israeli-style freedom and empowerment. The Israeli voters' massive
support for Barak and his concessionism in 1999 gave way last year to
a
massive vote of confidence in Sharon and his skepticism.

Now the average Israeli has been vindicated in his pessimism, as
gunmen
sponsored by Yasser Arafat's Fatah appeared in Beit She'an to
demonstrate
their idea of a political debate. Arafat is making no bones about his
preferences in our upcoming election. Yet the attack serves as a
reminder
that Arafat has no clue not only about democracy itself, but also
about
democratic dynamics. The Israeli voter may have previously been
manipulated by the Palestinian masterminds of a peace mirage. However,
being bullied to vote one way or another is an entirely different
thing
and can be counted on to backfire on its perpetrators.

Moreover, the attack on our democratic process should further alert
sensible people throughout the West to the universality of the
terrorist
threat to political freedom. On Thursday, the attackers targeted
freedom
of travel in Kenya and freedom of voting here, last week they attacked
the freedom of expression in Nigeria, before that they attacked the
freedom of travel in Indonesia, and last year they attacked the
world's
premier symbol of economic freedom in New York.

As it was while Nazism spread during the 1930s, the free world is slow
to
detect to the totalitarian threat which is challenging it. And just as
the fascists of those days mistook the West's reluctance to join
battle
for irreversible degeneration, now too the Middle East's terror
masters
rapidly accelerate their violence and diversify their targets,
assuming
that ultimate victory is just around the corner.

In fact, what is around the corner is an all-out war that might
involve
millions of people across a politically shackled Arab world, whose
chances of winning the confrontation it is slowly embracing are nil.
Yet
ordinary Arabs can still do what ordinary Germans, Italians,and
Japanese
grew to regret not having done in their time: confront the people who
are
leading them to catastrophe.

The upheaval in the Middle East, set in motion by the violent
destruction
of the Oslo formula and the confrontation with Saddam Hussein, will
have
a fundamental impact on Europe. These crises exposed deep-seated
policy
failures, and if Europe is to avoid the threats emanating from the
proliferation of weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East and
from
escalating terrorism and explosive instability, its leaders must learn
to
confront rather than run away from reality.

To play a serious role in the American-led Quartet more of a duet,
with
the UN and Russia in token roles the myths must be erased and the
relationship with Israel rebuilt.

After years of religious faith that comprehensive peace was
inevitable,
the EU's policies in the Middle East have collapsed with the
Palestinian
Authority. For a decade European officials worked closely with the
Israeli Labor Party and were taken in by Yasser Arafat's double game,
ignoring the contradictory evidence on the ground.

Victims of Palestinian attacks, as well as Europe's taxpayers, are
demanding an accounting for the money that was blindly pumped into
Arafat's terrorist kleptocracy. Similarly, European members of
parliament
are realizing that they supported Palestinian textbooks that did not
include a single map with the name Israel, books that continue to
teach
children to hate.

Europe has also adopted the Palestinian version of history that
started
in 1967 with occupation and settlements, as well as the myths
blaming
Ehud Barak and Bill Clinton for Arafat's stone-walling at Camp David.

It is apparently easier for many Europeans to blame Israel than accept
the reality of a continuing pan-Arab war against Israel's existence.
Diplomats and intellectuals in Paris, Stockholm, Madrid and Berlin
also
cling to the self-serving myth that decisive American pressure on
Israel can bring about a magic solution, as if Israel were a two-bit
colony willing to forgo its security and risk its survival.

Meanwhile, Finland refuses to sell Israel protective equipment against
chemical attacks and Britain has suspended shipments of arms that
Israel
needs for its defense.

More than two years of brutal terrorism and dozens of phony cease-fire
declarations have failed to push Europe into developing a more mature
approach. In Brussels, Yossi Beilin and Co. are still regarded as
Israel's true governing class, Ha'aretz is mistakenly considered to
reflect public opinion, and the consensus leaders, under Prime
Minister
Ariel Sharon, are disdained as temporary aberrations.

With no understanding of the complexities of Israeli democracy, these
myths are sustained by false hopes of a pliable Labor Party under new
Labor Party leader Amram Mitzna. Miguel Moratinos, the European
Commission's special envoy to the Middle East, whose experience is
limited to Morocco and North Africa, hops from salon to salon holding
meaningless discussions.

At the same time, Europe's structural links with Israel are tied to
the
1995 Barcelona framework, in which all the members, including Egypt,
Jordan, Syria, and North Africa, have the same status. This framework
allowed the EU to shove Israeli democracy and open society under the
same
rubric as the repressive regimes of Egypt and Syria.

On this basis the EU's ambassador to Israel justifies funding for
extremist groups and offensive propaganda, such as the pamphlet
published
by the Israeli branch of Physicians for Human Rights, as being similar
to
the EU's human-rights program in Egypt, when the analogy should
instead
be to a situation in which the American government was funding
extremist
anti-abortion groups seeking to influence Europe's democracies.

This analogy might help Europe grasp the differences between Israel
and
the Arab dictatorships, as well as avoid the perversion of human
rights
for Israel-bashing.

EUROPE'S MORAL claims are also undermined by its failure to do more
than
issue routine condemnations of brutal Palestinian terror. In some
cases,
there is even the argument that the perennial and powerless
Palestinian
victims have no other weapon. With the Holocaust relegated to a
distant
memory in Europe, this inaction, coupled with attacks on Jews and
Jewish
institutions and pro-Palestinian demonstrations that ignore terror,
leads
many Jews to conclude that anti-Semitism remains a very potent force.

France's former ambassador to the UK has not been the only one to
refer
to Israel as that shitty little country.

Taken together, these factors have created a deepening crisis in
relations between the EU and Israel and blocked any positive
influence.
Europe needs an honest and fundamental reassessment, with a
consideration
of new structures, one that requires different people not wedded to
the
old myths. A

 LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The militant Islamic group
 Hamas is urging followers to conduct a three-day
 electronic Jihad on Jewish Web sites, the Simon
 Wiesenthal Center said on Wednesday.



 Rabbi Abraham Cooper, an associate dean at the Los
 Angeles- based Jewish organization, told Reuters that
 one of the center's researchers had come across two
 Web sites in Arabic referring to a campaign of hacking
 into Jewish sites starting on November 29.


 The Simon Wiesenthal Center monitors extremist
 anti-Semitic publications and Web sites on a regular
 basis, but Cooper said the latest find this week was
 particularly alarming because one of the Web sites
 gave how to tips to would-be hackers.


 We have had numerous hackings back and forth between
 Israeli and Islamic sites since the Intifada began two
 years ago.


 But this is something we have not seen in some time.
 There seems to be an entire portion of a Web site
 which is devoted to a 'how to' get involved in that
 kind of activity, said Cooper, speaking from
 Jerusalem.


 Cooper said one of the Web sites appeared to be linked
 to Hamas. The Hamas movement is dedicated to Israel's
 destruction and has carried out numerous suicide
 bombings against Israelis since interim peace accords
 were signed in 1993.


 We don't know the extent of any potential activity or
 what exactly it would be, but we think this is
 significant.


 The term 'Jewish' Web sites could mean anything from
 Israeli government sites to any company that does
 business with Israel, Cooper added.


 Cooper said the significance of the November 29 start
 date was unclear, although he noted that it would be
 the first day of the eight-day Jewish Hanukkah
 festival of lights.


 Cooper said the Internet was playing a pivotal role as
 a forum both for ideas and for groups wanting to
 circumvent official sources of information.

 The Internet has transformed the Islamic and Islamist
 world The Internet has become not only a
 battlefield, as this announcement would seem to
 indicate... of electronic wars, but it is also a key
 element in propaganda battles in Arabic, Persian and
 in English, he said.

Let's hear it for prejudiced television news

As debate rages about the need for balance in British
broadcasting, Andrew Sullivan calls for an injection of honest bias,
US-style.

Before you continue reading, I have a confession. I am
biased. I have opinions - quite strong ones at times - on events. On
many
issues I have conservative views. On some I have somewhat liberal
ones.
The only thing that connects them is my general point of view which is
the product of my idiosyncratic thinking, reading and arguing.

To put it another way: I have no intention of trying to
persuade you of something in which I don't believe. And a large part
of
my motive in writing at all is to promote my own view of the world,
however implausible to some, at the expense of others.

Got that? I have a feeling you do. This is a newspaper,
after all. And columns in a newspaper invariably have a point of view.
And in each newspaper you won't necessarily get a full range of all
the
possible ideas and arguments out there. Nobody thinks this paper is
interchangeable with The Observer, for example. And nobody thinks
that's
particularly outrageous.

So why, one wonders, do we think so differently about
television? Two weeks ago the Independent Television Commission
reprimanded the US-based cable channel CNBC for an opinion and news
programme that featured only the editorial board of The Wall Street
Journal. The programme was deemed too biased and was barred from being
broadcast in Britain. It seems that while British readers are
considered
mature enough to distinguish between news and comment, British viewers
are not.

Simple questions: aren't they often the same people? And
what is so unique about television that it requires some elusive
quality
called objectivity? I can see the argument, perhaps, in the 1940s
when
there was only the BBC and its power was so great and its reach so
comprehensive that some rigid internal balance was deemed important.
(Even in the 1940s, of course, the BBC was anything but unbiased,
representing establishment Britain in largely conservative form.) But
today? With dozens of television options to choose from, why on earth
is
objectivity deemed to be important to each? Why are viewers not
allowed
to pick and choose between differing viewpoints? Why are producers,
editors and writers required to be balanced in their output? Perhaps
a
look at the United States confirms for some what a hellish place the
world would be with the freedom to produce the media that producers
enjoy
and viewers want.

In America, dozens of channels compete with each other and
with subsidised public television and radio. Some stations - are you
sitting down? - actually promote a liberal or a conservative view of
the
world. One of the newest and most successful cable channels, Fox News
(owned by The News Corporation, parent company of The Sunday Times),
touts itself as an antidote to the liberalism endemic to much of the
rest
of television. Others, such as National Public Radio, are proud of
their
liberal tradition and make only superficial attempts to disguise it.

Dan Rather, the long-standing anchor for CBS News, has
hosted fundraisers for the Democrats and makes no bones about his
liberal
opinions. Peter Jennings, the ABC News anchor, is an avowed critic of
Israel's policies in the West Bank. And the moderator for This Week,
the

Does this debase the American body politic? I don't think
so. Bias is inevitable in any grown-up journalist's work. You can try
to
be balanced (and you're a better journalist for it) but in your choice
of
topics, selection of guests, presentation of facts, you inevitably
show
your hand.

This isn't to say that journalism should degenerate into
simple propaganda or outright advocacy, at least not in the
presentation
of news rather than opinion. Trying to present many sides of an issue
is
the mark of an honest journalist; maintaining a distinction between
news
and opinion is the mark of an honest editor. But such honesty also
requires that we don't pompously claim an absence of any bias or claim
the mantle of complete impartiality when such pristine neutrality is
simply impossible.



And that's the problem with the BBC and the regulation of
television in Britain. In fact, the only time when things can go truly
awry is when biased journalists pretend they're completely objective.
When viewers actually imbibe the biased news as if it were neutral,
the
danger begins. The viewer's guard is down; the programme presents
itself
as authoritative and propaganda can get passed off as journalism. The
threat is not bias but the notion that bias can be abolished.

That's when deception - a more alarming issue - begins.

The classic American examples are National Public Radio and
The New York Times. Virtually no Republicans work in either. The news
stories reflect, in the case of

Senators blast Egyptian TV series

U.S. Senators are expected to introduce a bill Monday that would
condemn
an Egyptian TV miniseries based on an anti-Semitic tract. The
resolution,
sponsored by Sens. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.) and Gordon Smith (R-Ore.),
urges
the government of Egypt to halt the broadcast of the miniseries and to
speak out against such incitement by vigorously and publicly
condemning
anti-Semitism as a form of bigotry. In a broadcast timed to coincide
with the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, Horseman Without a Horse
began
airing on Egyptian television earlier this month. The series is based
on
the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, penned in Czarist Russia in the
1890s to expose a supposed Jewish conspiracy to dominate the world.
The
U.S. State Department has asked Egypt not to air the series.

State Dept. official: All U.S. aid to Arab world under review

WASHINGTON - The United States is reviewing all its aid to the Arab
world
to see how much it can redirect to programs that promote democracy and
the rule of law, a State Department official said on Friday.

The review includes all assistance to Egypt, the second largest
recipient
of U.S. aid after Israel and one of Washington's best friends in the
Arab
world, he said.

As part of a U.S. Middle East Partnership Initiative, we are
currently
in the process of conducting a complete review of all our assistance
programs in the Arab world, including Egypt, said the official, who
asked not to be named.

One of our objectives is to increase the portion of the assistance
fund
that supports the promotion of democracy and the rule of law. This
includes a range of activities intended to strengthen civil society
and
responsible debate in Egypt, the official added, using language
approved
in the department.

Egypt receives about $1.9 billion a year in U.S. aid - roughly
unchanged
since the late 1970s, when late Egyptian President Anwar Sadat signed
a
peace treaty with Israel.

The official did not say whether the overall amount of U.S. aid would
change but one objective is to increase the amount assigned for
democracy
and rule of law programs.

Much of U.S. aid to Egypt has gone to infrastructure projects, such as
the Cairo sewerage system, and projects to improve health and
education
services for Egyptians.

U.S. upset by Egyptian government
But the Egyptian government has upset the United States at least twice
this year, first by jailing prominent Egyptian-American sociologist
Saadeddin Ibrahim and more recently by allowing state television to
broadcast a series which American Jewish groups say is anti-Semitic.

U.S. diplomats in Cairo have been watching the series, Knight without
a
House, as it unfolds during the fasting month of Ramadan and have
concluded that they do not like its treatment of the Protocols of the
Elders of Zion.

We are very disappointed that the Government of Egypt TV station
would
air a program that includes scenes treating the so-called Protocols of
the Elders of Zion, an anti-Semitic forgery, as fact, the U.S.
official
said.

This broadcast does great harm to Egypt's reputation. We will
continue
to express to the government of Egypt our serious concern over this
matter. This kind of program does not contribute to the climate of
mutual
understanding and tolerance that the Middle East so needs, the
official
added.

Egypt and the United States have also been at odds this year over U.S.
threats to attack Iraq.

The Middle East Partnership Initiative is a $20 million program to
promote reformist thinking in the Arab world, based on the premise
that
more democracy would make Arabs feel more favorable toward the United
States and Israel.

U.S. officials say they believe that antagonism toward the United
States
in the Arab world is based on ignorance, misunderstanding or
propaganda
by Arab governments. Arabs say their main problem is with U.S.
policies.

After the Saadeddin Ibrahim case, the United States made clear to
Egypt
that it would not get any extra cash beyond the regular amount it has
received since the 1970s.

CAIRO, Egypt -- In the first domestic criticism of its kind, an
Egyptian rights group rebuked state television for broadcasting
a series based in part on the Protocols of the Elders of Zion,
an anti-Semitic work known to be a forgery.

The series Horseman Without a Horse has been shown nightly
on Egyptian television for the past two weeks, provoking
condemnation from the United States, Israel and Jewish groups
for airing the series based on the Protocols, which describe a
Jewish conspiracy to take over the world.

Egyptian Information Minister Safwat El-Sherif has denied the
series is anti-Semitic and defended it as an example of free
expression.

But the Egyptian Organization for Human Rights said Monday that
free expression should not be abused to propagate events that
might incite hatred.

The group, Egypt's best-known rights organization, released a
statement urging that the show begin with an acknowledgment that
the Protocols are forged.

The rights group is the first Egyptian organization to criticize
the series, which has received sympathetic reviews in local media.

Tuesday, a pro-government Egyptian weekly published excerpts from
the protocols preceded by an introduction quoting a prominent
Muslim cleric as saying: The Protocols of the Elders of Zion
were used by the Zionists to corrupt the nations of the world.

The religious affairs weekly Aqidati was quoting a decades-old
doctoral thesis on Judaism written by Mohammed Sayed Tantawi,
the grand sheik of Al-Azhar, a Cairo mosque and university that
is one of the most influential institutions in the Sunni Muslim
world.

Tantawi could not be immediately reached for comment. In an
interview with another pro-government weekly, Akher Saa, that
also appeared Tuesday, Tantawi said he had not seen Horseman
without a Horse but did not believe it deserved criticism.

Suppose that the series has some criticism or shows some of the
Jews' traits, this doesn't necessitate an uproar, he said. The
accusation of anti-Semitism was invented by the Jews as a means
to pressure Arabs and Muslims to implement their schemes in the
Arab and Muslim countries, so don't pay attention to them.

Tantawi did not discuss his thesis in the Akher Saa interview.

Egyptian actor Mohammed Sobhi, who stars in the show and co-wrote
the script, has said he knows the Protocols were forged, but that
the Israelis implemented them.

Historians have dismissed the Protocols as an invention of the
Russian czar's secret police in an attempt to blame the country's
problems on Jews.

The human rights group said the current hostility toward Israel --
over its conduct in the Palestinian uprising -- should not lead
anyone to condone the Protocols, particularly when the Arab world
is asking the West to condemn prejudice against Muslims.

Supporting the Palestinian cause doesn't need forged Protocols,
the secretary general of the rights group, Hafez Abu Saada, said
in an interview. What is happening on the ground (in the Palestinian
territories) is more reprehensible than anything else.

Though hardly anyone seems to have noticed, Israel
recently set a new world
record. It is unclear when precisely it occurred,
or what the exact
circumstances were. But at some point earlier this
month, Israel became the
first country to endure its 15,000th terrorist
attack in just over a two-year
period.

That's right, you read that correctly. According
to statistics compiled by
the IDF, as of November 17, 2002, there was a
total of 15,298 Palestinian
terror attacks against Israel since the intifada
began in September 2000.
That works out, on average, to nearly one terror
attack every hour of every
day over 25 consecutive months.

But that is not what qualifies Israel for a place
in the record books.
After all, many countries have experienced periods
of civil unrest,
subversive violence and lethal terrorism, albeit
not nearly as intense or as
prolonged as that which Israel has known of late.

What truly puts the Jewish state in a category all
its own, however, is its
willingness to tolerate this ongoing terror
campaign, which should have been
defeated long ago.

Everyone, it seems, knows what the answer is to
the current predicament.
Everyone, that is, except for the government,
which has neither the courage
nor the vision to move into Judea, Samaria and
Gaza and topple the
Palestinian Authority once and for all.

Instead, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon prefers to
play ping-pong with the
terrorists, sending in the army only to withdraw
it a few days later,
bouncing back and forth with no long-term plan and
certainly no clear-cut
strategy.

INDEED, MUCH of the military activity undertaken
by the army seems purely
reactive in nature, coming only after Jews have
been killed, rather than
before.

Take, for example, the recent IDF response to the
terror attack on Kibbutz
Metzer, in which a member of Yasser Arafat's Fatah
faction murdered five
Israelis.

Two hours later, Israeli helicopters fired four
rockets into a car-repair
shop in Gaza City that was being used as a
clandestine weapons factory. Army
spokesmen said that terrorists were using it to
manufacture explosive devices
and mortar shells.

If Israel knew that the place was a death factory,
one in which the
terrorists were actively producing tools to murder
the innocent, then why did
we wait until after the Metzer attack to knock it
out? The minute the
intelligence information regarding the garage's
true nature was confirmed,
why wasn't it taken out of commission forthwith?

Similarly, after last Friday's massacre in Hebron,
when terrorists killed 12
Israelis near the Tomb of the Patriarchs, the IDF
re-entered
Palestinian-controlled portions of the city which
it had evacuated just three
weeks earlier, on October 25. According to a
statement issued by the IDF
Spokesman's Office, the purpose behind retaking
the city was to continue the
determined action against the Palestinian terror
infrastructure.

That sounds good, except for one nagging question:
if Hebron's terrorist
infrastructure was still in place, why did the
army withdraw last month? Why
did it leave the job only half-finished? Israel's
critics at home and abroad
suggest that the government's response to
Palestinian terror is immoral
because it results in the needless deaths of
innocent Arabs. Frankly, I think
they have it all wrong. If the government's policy
qualifies as immoral, it
is because it results in the needless deaths of
innocent Jews.

For, by allowing the intifada to continue, and by
refraining from taking the
necessary steps to dismantle the PA and defeat the
terror organizations, the
government has undermined Israel's security and
that of its citizens, leaving
the terrorist threat in place to regroup and fight
another day.

But we, the public, must also acknowledge our
share of the blame for the
current situation. We have been too silent in
expressing our outrage over
Palestinian terror and the government's feeble
response. There have been no
demonstrations in the streets, no hunger strikes,
no prayer vigils, no mass
awakening of indignation or fury.

Histadrut workers went on strike recently over a
2.1% cost-of-living
increase, which amounts to just NIS 70 per month,
but many people are
unwilling to protest when it comes to the 73
Israelis who have been killed by
terrorists over the past three months.

It is incumbent upon us to wake up from this
nightmare. With elections
approaching, we have an opportunity to use all the
democratic and legal tools
at our disposal, and to send a clear signal to
those running for office. We
must let them know that the people of Israel have
had enough, and that we
will no longer tolerate a continuation of the
current policy, which amounts
to little more than a series of tired and
half-hearted measures.
The time has come for Israel to sweep into the
territories, reassert control,
and eliminate the terrorist infrastructure and
those who sponsor it. Arafat

 Back in August, columnist Paul Craig Roberts asked the question,
 Is a vote for Republicans a vote for a police state? The answer
 seems to be a resounding yes! The Bush administration seems
 determined to turn our country into the most elaborate and
 sophisticated police state ever devised.

 Things are so bad that outgoing house majority leader Dick Armey
 said that under Bush the federal government is out of control. In
 fact, the conservative congressman is reported to be seriously
 considering taking a position with the ACLU in order to help fight
 the federal government's usurpation of constitutionally protected
 liberties. Does that mean one must leave the Republican Party in
 order to fight for liberty? Maybe so.

 According to News Max, Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO) is being
 targeted for defeat - not by the Democrats, but by the GOP
 establishment. Why? Tancredo is the country's most outspoken
 critic of Bush's accommodations of illegal aliens. In other words,
 it's not enough to be a conservative Republican; one must be
 absolutely loyal to the fuehrer, George Bush, and to his brand of
 big government Republicanism. Tancredo's not, so he's on his way
 out.

 Furthermore, columnist William Safire recently warned against
 Bush's Homeland Security Act. In a column written for the New
 York Times Safire said, Every purchase you make with a credit
 card, every magazine subscription you buy and medical
 prescription you fill, every Web site you visit and e-mail you send
 or receive, every academic grade you receive, every bank deposit
 you make, every trip you book and every event you attend - all
 these transactions and communications will go into what the
 Defense Department describes as 'a virtual, centralized grand
 database.'

 Safire continued, To this computerized dossier on your private
 life from commercial sources, add every piece of information that
 government has about you - passports, driver's license and bridge
 toll records, judicial and divorce records, complaints from nosy
 neighbors to the FBI, your lifetime paper trail plus the latest
 hidden
 camera surveillance - and you have the supersnoop's dream: a
 'Total Information Awareness' about every U.S. citizen.

 In another account, The Seattle Times recently reported, The
 USA Patriot Act remains shrouded in complexity and secrecy.
 Bush administration officials won't say how it has been used.

 The Times continued by saying, The CIA and FBI for the first
 time ever are allowed to mix foreign intelligence with law
 enforcement on U.S. soil. Citing the act, Attorney General John
 Ashcroft also authorized FBI agents to spy on domestic groups
 without having to show evidence of a crime.

 The tyrannical tendencies of old King George III of England
 cannot hold a candle to the Machiavellian machinations of King
 George XLIII of the United States. Unfortunately, there are few
 Paul Reveres around to sound an alarm. Unless contemporary
 patriots act quickly, Republicans, not Democrats, will be the ones
 that ultimately dismantle our constitution and trample our liberties.

 expected to pass tonight or tomorrow a revised bill creating a
 Department
 of Homeland Security with dangerous new authority. The new House bill
 (HR
 5710) would supposedly address the Senate's labor concerns so that
 the
 Senate could pass it, as is, later this week, or possibly next week.

 Action requested: Please contact your senators immediately and
 representative next urging that no approval be given to a massive new
 Department of Homeland Security until the people are informed of the
 causes for the intelligence failures that led to 9-11.

 Key facts: The House and Senate inquiry into the attacks held its
 last
 hearing on October 17. Some of the testimony was shocking to say the
 least. But the Committee's report is not expected to be issued until
 early
 next year. So why the rush to implement a major restructuring of
 government before the public has access to the facts? According to
 the
 Associated Press for August 15, 2002, it could be years before the
 gigantic new Cabinet agency is fully operational. The report says
 that
 the General Accounting Office estimates that it could take five to 10
 years before the new department can provide meaningful results. So
 why
 the stampede? What is being covered up?

funding by Palestinians

LONDON -- European Foreign Affairs Commissioner Chris Patten has told
a
leading European legislator that wants an investigation into alleged
illegal use of European Union (EU) aid to the Palestinians like a
hole
in the head.

Patten's remark came in response to a question by Charles Tanner,
Conservative Foreign Affairs spokesman in the European Parliament,
about
charges that European aid to the Palestinians - currently running at
10
million euros a month - is being diverted to fund terrorist activity.

In a letter to the London Sunday Telegraph , Tanner said that if
there
is to be any chance of securing a lasting peace in the Middle East, we
must settle beyond all reasonable doubt such serious allegations of
fraudulent and violent misuse of EU taxpayers' money.

Otherwise, he said, aggrieved Israelis will feel entitled to sue the
EU.
Commissioner Patten should be the first to accept that he has all to
gain
by clearing the air once and for all.

He said he and colleagues in the European Parliament have launched a
bipartisan bid to obtain the 157 signatures needed to set up an
inquiry
to investigate allegations that EU funds are being illegally diverted
to
fund terrorist activity against Israeli civilians.

Rather unexpectedly, he wrote, the European Commission [the cabinet
of
the European parliament] has resisted this initiative.

Commissioner Patten's response to my intervention at Question Time
was
that he wanted the issue investigated 'like a hole in the head'.

 1. TWO KIDS, THREE ADULTS SLAUGHTERED IN KIBBUTZ METZER
 Kibbutz Metzer, between the Shomron and Hadera in central Israel, is
 in
 mourning today after a terrorist infiltrated the town last night,
 slaughtered two children and three adults, and then kept the security

 forces and the residents on tense alert until this morning when it
 was
 ascertained that he had safely fled the area.

 The murderer entered the kibbutz (agricultural collective), 30 miles
 northeast of Tel Aviv and only a few hundred meters from the pre-1967

 armistice line (Green Line), shortly before midnight.  He first shot
 at two
 people walking on a path, mortally wounding Tirtzah Damari, 42, of
 Elyachin, but not injuring her companion, who managed to escape and
 hide
 out in a barn for several hours.  Yitzchak Dori, 43, head of the
 kibbutz
 secretariat, came to assist when he heard the gunfire, and apparently
 fired
 several shots at the terrorist - but to no avail.  The Arab shot at
 him as
 well and killed him, then entered a house and pumped bullets into 4-
 and
 5-year-old brothers and their mother - the Ochayon family - as she
 was
 cowering with them in their bedroom.

 It was not clear at that point how many terrorists were involved, or
 where
 he or they were, and residents were ordered to stay indoors with
 their
 lights off while a thorough manhunt in every corner of the kibbutz
 was
 launched.  Only around 7 AM were the residents allowed out, after the

 terrorist was declared to have fled.  Very heavy police, Border
 Guard, and
 IDF forces remained in neighboring areas.

 Yitzchak Dori was buried this afternoon in Metzer, while at the same
 time
 Tirtzah Damari was being laid to rest in Moshav Elyachin, near
 Hadera.  Tirtzah is the third Oslo War victim from Elyachin in the
 past
 year, though the town itself was never attacked.

 The funerals of the Ochayon family members - Revital and her two sons

 Matan, 5, and Noam, 4 - will be held this evening in the Haifa
 area.  Revital, described as a powerhouse of energy, was separated
 from
 her husband, with whom she was speaking on the phone when the
 terrorist
 entered her home.  She and her two children moved to Netzer from
 Pardes
 Chana a few months ago.  Her former husband said today that he heard
 the
 gunshot and the children's screams over the phone.  In a voice broken
 with
 sobs, he said afterwards that though he knew what had happened, they

 wouldn't let me in to the kibbutz for three hours.  'Be optimistic,'
 they
 told us  Do you know what's it like for two 5-year old kids?    Do
 you
 know how beautiful they were?

 2. IN THE KIBBUTZ
 Kibbutz Metzer was established in the early 1950's by South American
 immigrants of the left-wing HaShomer HaTza'ir movement, and currently
 has
 some 500 members.  Menashe Regional Council Head Ilan Sadeh said that
 over
 the years Metzer has had extraordinary relations with the local
 Arabs,
 wonderful neighborly relations.  Concerned that construction of a
 security
 separation fence would encroach upon neighboring Arab-cultivated
 land, the
 kibbutz recently offered to give up some of its own lands for the
 purpose -
 or, alternatively, suggested that no fence at all be built between
 Metzer
 and its Arab neighbors.

 Arutz-7's Effie Meir spoke this morning with some members of Kibbutz
 Metzer
 about the murderous attack.  One former Peace Now leader said that he

 realized about a year ago that, with all due respect to our desire
 for
 peace, so far it's only been a one-way street  The Palestinians are
 not
 yet ready for peace.  He said that he thinks the terrorists picked
 Kibbutz
 Metzer specifically because of its left-wing tilt.  Two others did
 not
 agree, however.  One said that the attack does not change his
 perception of
 his Arab neighbors, as it's only a very small percentage of Arabs
 who are
 terrorists  If it wasn't for the placement of the security fence
 [which
 encroached significantly on Arab olive groves], we could have
 continued
 living in peace.  In answer to a question, another man said, Yes,
 we will
 continue to make peace - I hope so.  After all, I like peace.

 Representatives of the Psychological Service of the Yesha Regional
 Councils
 arrived in Metzer this morning to offer their help to the bereaved
 families.  Kibbutz Movement leaders also visited the kibbutz, and
 said that
 despite the attack, their movement will continue to adhere to its
 policy of
 peace and reconciliation  Kibbutz Metzer is living evidence of
 co-existence even during times of conflict.

 Defense Minister Sha'ul Mofaz and IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Moshe
 Yaalon
 met for a long meeting today, apparently planning Israel's military
 retaliation.  The two worked together as Chief of Staff and Deputy

The Council of Europe has adopted a measure that would criminalize
Internet hate speech, including hyperlinks to pages that contain
offensive content.

The provision, which was passed by the council's decision-making body
(the Committee of Ministers), updates the European Convention
on Cybercrime.

Specifically, the amendment bans any written material, any image or
any other representation of ideas or theories, which advocates,
promotes or incites hatred, discrimination or violence, against any
individual or group of individuals, based on race, colour,
descent or national or ethnic origin, as well as religion if used as
pretext for any of these factors.

It also obliquely refers to the Holocaust, outlawing sites that deny,
minimize, approve or justify crimes against humanity,
particularly those that occurred during World War II.

The emergence of international communication networks like the
Internet provide certain persons with modern and powerful means to
support racism and xenophobia and enables them to disseminate easily
and widely expressions containing such ideas, the council's
report on the amendment states. In order to investigate and
prosecute such persons, international cooperation is vital.

Many European countries have existing laws outlawing Internet racism,
which is generally protected as free speech in the United
States. The council cited a report finding that 2,500 out of 4,000
racist sites were created in the United States.

Critics say that the measure may push hate groups to set up virtual
shop in the United States, pointing to a decision last year by a
U.S. judge who ruled that Yahoo did not have to block French
citizens' access to online sales of Nazi memorabilia, which are
illegal
in that country. The judge determined that U.S. websites are only
subject to American law.

This could lead to a clash of cultures, said Cedric Laurant, a
Belgian lawyer and staff counsel with the Electronic Privacy and
Information Center. What will happen if the French police start
asking local U.S. police to give them information about the people
running a site?

European countries may decide to censor U.S. content themselves, as
Spain has done, suggested Carlos Sánchez Almeida, a cybercrime
lawyer located in Barcelona.

Spain recently passed legislation authorizing judges to shut down
Spanish sites and block access to U.S. Web pages that don't comply
with national laws.

If European countries adopt the (anti-racism) amendment of the
European Council in their legislatures, they'll also be able to
block websites from the U.S.A., despite the First Amendment.

Representatives of the 44 European countries on the European Council
must decide whether to adopt or reject the measure during the
next Parliamentary Assembly session in January. Countries who support
the amendment will then need to ratify it in their national
legislatures before making it law.

 Millions of Americans were justifiably shocked and outraged over the
 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals' notorious ruling on the
 Pledge of Allegiance. Can our courts really have sunk this low?
 people asked. How can little Johnny and Suzie violate the
 Constitution by uttering the words 'under God' while reciting the
 Pledge of Allegiance in a public school?

 Yet that is what the Court said in its June 26th decision. This
 ruling was a continuation of an ongoing subversive campaign aimed at
 expunging all mention of God and all Christian symbols from the
 public sphere. Judicial activists have ordered our students not to
 invoke the Almighty's name in prayer on school property. Posting the
 Ten Commandments on classroom walls is also supposedly a major
 no-no. Traditional Christmas carols with religious themes are out, as
 are Nativity scenes. Christmas and Easter vacations have been
 de-Christianized to, respectively, winter and spring breaks. Many
 textbooks have dropped the traditional Christocentric dating
 system of B.C. (Before Christ) and A.D. (Anno Domini, In the Year of
 Our Lord) in favor of B.C.E. (Before the Common Era) and C.E.
 (Common Era).

 Many Christians concerned about this trend are looking hopefully to
 the U.S. Supreme Court to reverse the 9th Circuit's ruling, as
 it has done with some of that court's previous radical rulings. Even
 if that were to happen, developments at the World Summit on
 Sustainable Development (also known as Earth Summit II) could
 ultimately undo any Supreme Court reversal. If the Earth Summiteers
 have their way, Johnny and Suzie will not be able to pledge
 allegiance to one nation, under God, but they will be able to
 pledge
 to One World, under Gaia - that is, Mother Earth. They will not be
 allowed to have the Ten Commandments or the Holy Bible in
 class, but could soon be bowing before the pagan Ark of Hope,
 reading the sacred Temenos Books, and reverently intoning the text
 of the new UN Earth Charter.

 Those decrying the 9th Circuit Court's harmful decisions will take
 little comfort in learning that senior 9th Circuit Court Judge J.
 Clifford Wallace was among the jurists attending the Johannesburg
 Summit's Global Judges Symposium. That meeting was hosted by
 several globalist institutions with a pronounced hostility toward the
 United States. The participants, which included judges from
 Communist regimes, pledged to apply new legal instruments in keeping
 with the principles of sustainable development, and the
 international Rule of Law.

 One of the documents designed to advance this process, the
 long-awaited Earth Charter, was formally unveiled to the world at
 Johannesburg. Crafted by a conclave of Wise Persons headed by
 former Soviet dictator Mikhail Gorbachev, it is set to become the
 Holy Writ of the UN's new global spirituality. Although the Earth
 Charter is not a legally binding document, its impact may prove
 damaging and pervasive. Its benign-sounding verbiage and symbolic
 nature camouflage its dangerous purpose. The Charter is intended
 to become a universally adopted creed that will psychologically
 prepare the world's children to accept the necessity of world
 government to save the environment. It is also an outrageous attempt
 to indoctrinate your children in the UN's New Age paganism.

 The Preamble of the Earth Charter states:

 . we are one human family and one Earth community with a common
 destiny. We must join together to bring forth a sustainable global
 society founded on respect for nature Towards this end, it is
 imperative that we, the peoples of Earth, declare our
 responsibility to one another, to the greater community of life, and
 to future generations.

 According to the Charter, humanity must undergo a global change of
 mind and heart. And the UN's all-wise seers visualize
 themselves as the lead change agents for this global undertaking. The
 Earth Charter Initiative, however, candidly admits that it
 intends to recruit your children as change agents, as well. We seek
 to increase the participation of young people in utilizing the
 Earth Charter as a guideline in their work as active agents of
 change, says the Earth Charter Initiative website. They have been
 doing precisely that, and will be accelerating their program
 throughout the world

 Data of Americans

   The Pentagon is constructing a computer system that could
 create a vast electronic dragnet, searching for personal information
 as part of the hunt for terrorists around the globe - including the
 United States.

   As the director of the effort, Vice Adm. John M. Poindexter,
 has described the system in Pentagon documents and in speeches,
 it will provide intelligence analysts and law enforcement officials
 with instant access to information from Internet mail and
 calling records to credit card and banking transactions and travel
 documents, without a search warrant.

   Historically, military and intelligence agencies have not been
 permitted to spy on Americans without extraordinary legal
 authorization. But Admiral Poindexter, the former national security
 adviser in the Reagan administration, has argued that the
 government needs broad new powers to process, store and mine billions
 of minute details of electronic life in the United States.

   Admiral Poindexter, who has described the plan in public
 documents and speeches but declined to be interviewed, has said that
 the government needs to break down the stovepipes that separate
 commercial and government databases, allowing teams of
 intelligence agency analysts to hunt for hidden patterns of activity
 with powerful computers.

   We must become much more efficient and more clever in the ways
 we find new sources of data, mine information from the new and
 old, generate information, make it available for analysis, convert it
 to knowledge, and create actionable options, he said in a
 speech in California earlier this year.

   Admiral Poindexter quietly returned to the government in
 January to take charge of the Office of Information Awareness at the
 Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, known as Darpa. The office
 is responsible for developing new surveillance technologies in
 the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks.

   In order to deploy such a system, known as Total Information
 Awareness, new legislation would be needed, some of which has
 been proposed by the Bush administration in the Homeland Security Act
 that is now before Congress. That legislation would amend the
 Privacy Act of 1974, which was intended to limit what government
 agencies could do with private information.

   The possibility that the system might be deployed domestically
 to let intelligence officials look into commercial transactions
 worries civil liberties proponents.

   This could be the perfect storm for civil liberties in
 America, said Marc Rotenberg, director of the Electronic Privacy
 Information Center in Washington The vehicle is the Homeland
 Security Act, the technology is Darpa and the agency is the F.B.I.
 The
 outcome is a system of national surveillance of the American public.

   Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld has been briefed on the
 project by Admiral Poindexter and the two had a lunch to
 discuss it, according to a Pentagon spokesman.

   As part of our development process, we hope to coordinate with
 a variety of organizations, to include the law enforcement
 community, a Pentagon spokeswoman said.

   An F.B.I. official, who spoke on the condition that he not be
 identified, said the bureau had had preliminary discussions with
 the Pentagon about the project but that no final decision had been
 made about what information the F.B.I. might add to the system.

   A spokesman for the White House Office of Homeland Security,
 Gordon Johndroe, said officials in the office were not familiar
 with the computer project and he declined to discuss concerns raised
 by the project's critics without knowing more about it.

   He referred all questions to the Defense Department, where
 officials said they could not address civil liberties concerns
 because they too were not familiar enough with the project.

   Some members of a panel of computer scientists and policy
 experts who were asked by the Pentagon to review the privacy
 implications this summer said terrorists might find ways to avoid
 detection and that the system might be easily abused.

   A lot of my colleagues are uncomfortable about this and worry
 about the potential uses that this technology might be put, if
 not by this administration then by a future one, said Barbara Simon,
 a computer scientist who is past president of the Association
 of Computing Machinery. Once you've got it in place you can't
 control it.

   Other technology policy experts dispute that assessment and
 support Admiral Poindexter's position that linking of databases is
 necessary to track potential enemies operating inside the United
 States.

   They're conceptualizing the problem in the way we've suggested
 it needs to be understood, said Philip Zelikow, a historian

Saddam Hussein's staunchest ally is 90 miles from America, and his
name
is Fidel Castro.

In the late 1980s, Cuban orthopedic surgeon Rodrigo Alvarez Cambras
removed a lethal tumor in Hussein's back.  Hussein generously
remunerated
Cambras-also head of the Cuban-Iraqi Friendship Association-who gave
the
money to Castro and received a mansion in Havana's elite Miramar area.

Cambras visited Baghdad in July to give Hussein a message from Castro.

Cuba's 43-year long despot expressed the solidarity of Cuba with
Hussein and congratulated him on the 34th anniversary of the socialist
Ba'ath Party's coup in Iraq.

Castro and Hussein have obvious similarities.  Both enslave countries,
promote terrorism, and detest America.

Another trait connects these despots: hatred of Jews specifically
manifested against the Jewish homeland.

Saddam Hussein's hostility to Israel is infamous.  This is the man who
attacked Israel with 39 Scud missiles in 1991.  This is the man who
sends
checks to the families of suicide bombers who massacre Israeli
civilians.

Hussein representatively said on September 28, +ICY-in targeting
Iraq, the
United States administration is acting on behalf of Zionism, which has
been killing the heroic people of Palestine, destroying their
property,
murdering their children, and seeking to impose their domination on
the
whole world.

And what are Castro's views of Israel?

Last June in Havana, Castro led a rally of approximately 10,000 that
protested Israeli genocide.  The rally culminated a week of
Palestinian solidarity activities organized by the regime.

A student who addressed the rally declared, We want to demand the end
of
the genocide against our brother Arab nation.  Long live the heroic
Palestinian people!  Long live the Arab peoples who fight against
imperialism!  Socialism or death!

At last September's World Conference against Racism in Durban, South
Africa, Castro referred to Israel's ongoing genocide against the
Palestinian people.  This March during a televised speech in Havana
he
referred to revolting and brutal killings such as the ones carried
out
by the State of Israel+ICY-against the people of Palestine.

Accordingly, Castro's media regularly depict Israel as a Nazi regime.

(One of the anti-Israel books Cuba has published is entitled Zionism:
The
Fascism of the Star of David.)  Radio Rebelde talks about Jews who
are
now practicing genocide against Palestinians (9/3/01); periodical
Granma
International features headlines like Sharon announces continuation
of
Palestinian holocaust (4/9/02), Crusade against the Arab people from
Washington and Tel Aviv (8/21/02), and Israeli genocide continues
against the Palestinian people (8/30/02).

Castro and Hussein's anti-Zionism often results in partnerships to
delegitimize Israel.  For instance, in 1991 both voted against
repealing
the 1975 United Nations resolution equating Zionism with racism.
(Cuba
and Iraq co-sponsored the resolution in 1975.)
The Iraqi News Agency reported when Cambras visited Hussein in April
for
his birthday, Condemning the Zionist crimes against our people in
Palestine, Cambras described them as Nazi crimes+ICY-He called on the
world
and its governments to take a decisive stand against the crimes of the
Zionist aggressors.

Like Hussein, Castro has a long history of backing aggression against
Israel.  From sending thousands of troops to aid Syria in the 1973 Yom
Kippur War through the present training of Palestinian terrorists,
Castro
is in the vanguard of anti-Zionist violence.  (The most notorious
terrorist Cuba has trained is Illich R+AOE-mirez S+AOE-nchez, a.k.a.
Carlos the
Jackal.)

Over 90% of Cuban Jews have fled since Castro came to power, and those
who remain can't denounce the barrage of venom against Israel.  If
they
criticize Castro or his foreign policy, Jews can be charged with
crimes
such as disrespect and enemy propaganda.
Cuban Jew Tony Fune observes, I understand that we have no freedom of
speech, no freedom of the press, no freedom to travel, no freedom to
choose how we will educate our children. And I understand that's not
right.

The Anti-Defamation League, which describes itself as the world's
leading organization fighting anti-Semitism, hasn't issued so much as
a
press release on Cuba.  The B'nai B'rith, the world's best known
Jewish
human rights organization, ignores the systematic violation of Cuban
Jews' human rights.  In fact, the B'nai B'rith plans to visit Cuba in
December, pouring money into an archenemy of the Jewish homeland.

President Bush talks about regime change in Iraq.  Hussein's terrorist
brother in Havana deserves likewise, and Cuba's captive Jews deserve
the
solidarity of their free brethren.

THE BUSH FAMILY ROAD MAP

What is it about the Bush family that takes them
on detours along crooked roads
when it comes to Arabs, Oil, Terror and Israel?
President George W. Bush
announced that, within his depth of experience in
world affairs, particularly in the
Middle East, he has a plan, a road map for Israel.

That road map has many forks in the road, detours
to no exits but, in the end of
this crooked road, it requires Israel to be
replaced with another Arab State called
Palestine. That, of course, is not what is being
promised to Israel but, in the end,
Israel will be submerged in a sea of hostile Arab
nations.

According to all past history that new state
called Palestine will be the epi-center
for all Terrorist organizations to represent their
sponsoring nations of Iran, Iraq,
Syria and others. Even now, in the areas turned
over to Arafat by the Oslo gang,
it has become a hot incubator for Terrorist
training and collaboration between the
gangs, including the PLO, Islamic Jihad, Hamas,
Tanzim, PFLP, Hezb'Allah, Al
Qaeda, `et al'.

One might speculate on why President Bush and
family would want to act as
godfather to a Terrorist nation that, when it
acquires its full growth will inevitably
threaten American interests. Looking back to
explain this strange phenomenon,
we find that George Bush, Sr. and James Baker team
supporting Saddam Hussein
with money (at least $5 Billion American
tax-payers`dollars), technology and finally
being reluctantly forced to push Saddam out of
Kuwait while still leaving him and
his top military team whole. America now faces an
Iraq with vastly expanded and
improved weapons of mass destruction - courtesy of
the
Bush/Baker/Powell/Scowcroft team.

There are two (at least two) excellent,
well-researched books that track the
Bush/Baker/Powell/Scowcroft dealings with Iraq
before, during and after the 1991
Gulf War, Desert Storm: The Spider's Web: The
Secret History of How the
White House Illegally Armed Iraq by Alan Friedman
(1) and just released The
High Cost of Peace: How Washington''s Middle East
Policy Left America
Vulnerable to Terrorism by Joseph Bodansky. (2)
The illegal machinations by
the Bush interests are especially interesting and
help to explain the disingenuous
Road Map plan of the current President Bush. (I
plan to review this book by
Bodansky soon but I highly recommend that you
purchase it for your reference
library.)

If we Americans are concerned about such nations
as Iraq, Syria, Iran, Saudi
Arabia, Egypt and others having plans to subvert
America and American interests,
just wait for the new state of Palestine! Here
will be the crucible into which will be
poured every hostile Terrorist organization,
acting both as proxies for the above
named nations but, also and especially for radical
Islamism.

How will President Bush explain an American city
blown to dust or a plague staring
in California and sweeping eastward, courtesy of
the Palestinian operatives in
linkage with all other Terrorist organizations?
The new state called Palestine,
coalescing ultimate International Terror, will be
the historical legacy of the Bush
family to America and to the World. Granted their
short view is that somewhere on
this bloody ``Yellow Brick Road Map'', Israel will
meet the wicked witch of the
North and the Jewish State will be eliminated 
unless they ignore the Bush Road
Map.

There is a belief that achieving this bloody goal
will, of course, pacify and deter
the radical Islamists from making war against the
rest of the non-Muslim world and
particularly America  or so the dream goes.

Bush, like Clinton, has virtually promised Yassir
Arafat, his clones, cronies and
successors, that there is no act of killing that
will be viewed by the Bush
Administration as sufficiently heinous to deter
him from being the surrogate father
or godfather of this new State dedicated to
Terror. The Bush family has a long
history of crooked Road Maps which end nowhere.

We all hope the son has broken away from the habit
of building roads that are
intended to profit the multi-national oil
companies and American military/industrial
complex but, require that other nations be
sacrificed to satiate that greed.
President George W. Bush, the Bush family (and
father Bush's former cronies),
Secretary of State Colin Powell insist that Israel
must allow such a Terror State to
be built in Israel's vulnerable underbelly. This
is the fork in the road offered to the
Jewish State of Israel who is desperate for
friends. But presently, Israel is
ignoring all those obvious warning road signs
telling her to turn around, ``Danger
Ahead!'', ``Bridge Out!'', ``Road Washed Away!'',
``Turn Around''!

Alleged Sept. 11 conspirator admired Hitler

A Moroccan student on trial in Germany for helping the Sept. 11 pilots
expressed admiration for Hitler´s attempt to exterminate the Jewish
people, a former roommate testified. Mounir Motassadek also said he
believes Israel has no right to exist, the witness said Tuesday.
Motassadek is accused of helping the pilots when they lived in Hamburg
before they carried out the attacks on the World Trade Center and
Pentagon. Motassadek, 28, faces life in prison if a Hamburg court
finds
him guilty of belonging to a terrorist organization and of more than
3,000 counts of being an accessory to murder.

The storyline was a familiar one. Law enforcement profiling in the
sniper case proved to be wrong, nothing more than a fabulous
rendering created from inaccurate stereotypes and latent racial
biases. Usually such mishaps are the grist for mills of left-leaning
editorial pages, but not this time.

We were warned about the sniper. The profilers told us that he
assuredly was a man full of rage, almost definitely white. It was
also deemed likely that he would have connections to white supremacy.
But the Beltway Sniper was not a crazed, lone, white
supremacist gunman. John Muhammad and John Malvo are undoubtedly
crazed, but they weren't lone and aren't white.

However, it appears that Muhammad was part of a supremacy movement --
a militant spin-off of the Nation of Islam called The Nation
of Gods and Earths or, more commonly, The Five Percent.

Although the precise circumstances of the founding of this militant
sect are under some controversy, all accounts lead back to one
man - Clarence 13X. Much like the more famous radical black X,
Malcolm, the self-proclaimed Clarence 13X broke with the Nation of
Islam and began his own organization. The name Five Percent refers
to the group's belief that five percent of humanity, black
humanity, is divine.

13X maintained the controversial racial (some would say racist)
theories of the Nation of Islam. But 13X added a Gnostic element of
divinization including a mantra that is familiar to anyone who
followed the sniper attacks - I am God.

In the teachings of 13X, the black man was to undertake a strict
regimen of self-mastery. Once that enlightened level was attained,
he in essence became God by controlling his own destiny. (Black
women, conversely, attained the level of earth.)

Recall how relatives in Baton Rouge told reporters that Muhammad,
when visiting this past summer, seemed to have Malvo involved in
some type of purification regimen that included Malvo eating only
crackers, honey and vitamins. Did Malvo think himself on his way
to becoming a god under Muhammad's tutelage?

Surely such a strange sect must be an aberration in both the black
and American Islamic communities? No.

The Five Percenters were founded in 1964, but by the 1980s, the group
had spread from its origins in New York to the West Coast.
Unlike its white supremacist counterparts which seem relegated to
small enclaves in western states, The Nation of Gods and Earths'
influence is nation-wide and surprisingly influential in mainstream
hip-hop music.

Some say that Clarence 13X's popularity in hip-hop music circles
stemmed from his unorthodox preaching style that has been
characterized as a rap. But whatever the reason, 13X's influence
has been immense.

The artists who have a Five Percent connection are not the fringe of
the rap and hip-hop music industry but instead include some of
the industry's most successful and influential acts: Busta Rhymes
(star of a new beer advertisement from Miller Lite), the Wu-Tang
Clan, Big Daddy Kane, Rakim, Lakim Shabazz and Brand Nubian.

A song by Brand Nubian, a Jamaican reggae/rap group, is of interest
in that it uses a shibboleth of the Five Percenters, a
shibboleth repeated in a sniper letter. The phrase is Word is bond.
Likewise, Kane, Rakim and Shabazz have all used the Five
Percent flag in album cover art as well as writing lyrics that
contain elements of the sect's doctrines.

Much of the mainstream media recoil from delving into a story that
requires elaborating on numerology or bizarre esoteric teachings
(For example: black men are known to be gods because the word Allah
is an esoteric acronym of: arm, leg, leg, arm, head). But the
media shouldn't shy away from the obvious story, the one that doesn't
require a crash course in tarot cards.

The easy story to tell is that the snipers who terrorized the greater
Washington, D.C., area were part of a black supremacist sect.
This sect has an undetermined connection to the Nation of Islam (just
as John Muhammad has an undetermined connection to Louis
Farrakhan). The sect also has been influential in the hip-hop music
world.

But none of this seems to capture the fancy of television's talking
heads.

There is little doubt that if the sniper's profile had played out
according to Hoyle's and he had been a white loner with white
supremacist ties, the twisted tenets of his particular creed of
militant white supremacy would have been explored in depth. Muhammad
and Malvo fit the ultimate hot-potato profile: black supremacist
Muslim heretics.

To speak of Islam as anything but as an unqualified religion of peace
is taboo; the topic of black supremacists is not addressed;
and the combination of both makes for a news story that may

Harry Rositzke, Linguist and American Spymaster, Dies at 91

 Harry Rositzke, an American spymaster whose career veered from
researching the origins of the English language
 to probing the inner workings of Nazi Germany and, later, the
Soviet Union, died on Monday at a hospital in
Warrenton, Va. He was 91 and lived in Middleburg, Va.

An intelligence officer for nearly 30 years, first with the Office of
Strategic Services and with its successor, the Central
Intelligence Agency, Mr. Rositzke found himself at the center of
wartime and then cold war covert activity.

Occasionally, however, he also found himself in an unwanted limelight.
Once, an office he led was accused of
involvement in a failed attempt on the life of the Chinese leader Zhou
Enlai. On another occasion there were
suspicions, never substantiated, that he had been picked to lead an
illegal C.I.A. domestic spying operation.

By the time America entered World War II, Mr. Rositzke had established
himself as a promising scholar of linguistics,
specializing in Anglo-Saxon.

Harvard had sent him to Hamburg University as a Sheldon Fellow and
awarded him a doctorate for a dissertation on
The Speech of Kent Before the Norman Conquest. He had also taught
Anglo-Saxon at Harvard as well as at the
universities of Omaha and Rochester.

But the war carried him into strategic services, for which he was chief
of military intelligence in London, Paris and
Germany. After the war, Mr. Rositzke moved to the C.I.A.

The historian Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr., wrote in his preface to Mr.
Rositzke's book The C.I.A.'s Secret Operations
(Readers Digest Press, 1977), War had made him a professional,
adding, Peace evidently offered him scope for
analysis and action on questions more urgent than Anglo-Saxon grammar.

Mr. Rositzke was the first chief of the C.I.A.'s Soviet division. From
1952-54, he ran agents against the Soviet Union
and Eastern Europe out of Munich. From 1954-56, he was in charge of the
operations schools in the agency's training
division.

In 1957, he moved to New Delhi as station chief, operating against
Soviet, Chinese and Tibetan targets.

In 1962, Mr. Rositzke returned to Washington where he recruited Soviet
and Eastern European diplomats as informers
there and in New York. But in 1967 a former State Department code
clerk, John Discoe Smith, who served in India
from 1954 to 1959 and later defected to the Soviet Union, published a
pamphlet in which he asserted that Mr.
Rositzke had been expelled from India at his instigation.

Mr. Smith said he had written to Indian officials telling them that the
C.I.A.'s New Delhi station had been involved in the
1955 bombing of a plane carrying the Chinese delegation to the Bandung
Nonaligned Conference in the mistaken belief
that Zhou Enlai was on board. India then expelled Mr. Rositzke in
belated retaliation, Mr. Smith said.

After a period at George Washington's Sino-Soviet Institute, Mr.
Rositzke was coordinator of operations against
Communist parties abroad until his retirement in 1970.

Five years later, however, he found himself back in the news when the
director of central intelligence, William E. Colby,
published a report on the agency's illegal domestic spying operations,
known as Chaos. The operations had begun
under President Lyndon B. Johnson but were greatly expanded by
President Richard M. Nixon. The Colby report
included a memorandum dated Aug. 15, 1967, by the leader of covert
operations, Thomas H. Karamessines,
suggesting that Mr. Rositzke and another official, Richard Ober, be put
in charge of Chaos. Whether this happened
remains unclear.

Heinrich August Rositzke was born on Feb. 25, 1911, in Brooklyn, the
son of German immigrants. He earned his
undergraduate degree at Union College in 1931.

In retirement he turned to writing about intelligence matters and the
cold war.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Helen Bourgeoise Rositzke; a son,
John Brockman Rositzke of Jackson, Mich.; and
a daughter, Anne Elizabeth Hunt Rositzke of New York.

Rudolf Augstein, 79, Publisher of Der Spiegel, Is Dead

ONDON, Nov. 7  Rudolf Augstein, the founder and publisher of Der
Spiegel, who regarded his weekly news
magazine as the assault artillery of his country's fledgling
postwar democracy, died today of pneumonia, his
publishing company said. He was 79.

With few parallels in European publishing, Mr. Augstein exerted broad
influence on his country's press, politicians and
policies in a career that began modestly enough when, at the age of 23,
he took over a weekly news magazine from
British occupiers and began publishing Der Spiegel, which means The
Mirror, in January 1947. He was still its publisher
when he died, two days after his 79th birthday.

His death today inspired a cascade of tributes from politicians
including Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, who said Mr.
Augstein had stamped and formed German public opinion like almost no
other journalist. Arnulf Baring, a German
historian, said Mr. Augstein had contributed to the establishment of
the media as the Fourth Estate after press
freedom had been destroyed by Nazism.

Mr. Augstein once spent 103 days in prison to defend the Hamburg-based
Der Spiegel against charges of treason in
what became the celebrated Spiegel affair of the early 1960's.

Mr. Augstein's career spanned Germany's postwar history from the
division of a defeated nation to reunificiation after
the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. It was a time when Germany
straddled a politically divided continent, with the Soviet
Army in East Germany and hundreds of thousands of American troops based
in West Germany.

In West Germany, slowly emerging from Nazism's shadow, the superpowers
fought the shadowy espionage battles of
the cold war. And on that stage, Mr. Augstein positioned Der Spiegel as
a major player. He was regarded as a
powerful supporter of Willy Brandt's overtures to Communist East Europe
known as Ostpolitik and of the reunification
policies of Helmut Kohl.

But, like many of his generation, his roots lay in the same
between-the-wars Germany that propelled Adolf Hitler to
power.

Mr. Augstein was born in Hanover, northern Germany, in 1923, the son of
a photo equipment dealer. He joined a local
newspaper in 1941 but was drafted into the German Army as a telegraph
operator and, later, artillery observer in
World War II before he was wounded on the eastern front. He spent a
brief period as prisoner of the victorious United
States forces in 1945 before resuming his career as a journalist.

Under his editorship, the liberal Der Spiegel grew as an acerbic critic
of Konrad Adenauer's postwar government and as
champion of investigative journalism into many domestic scandals. Its
circulation went from 65,000 in 1948 to more
than five million in recent times.

But it was in late 1962 that Mr. Augstein's most celebrated clash with
the authorities made headlines with the
magazine's publication of an article that raised questions over the
military preparedness of NATO.

Der Spiegel's offices were searched, journalists were arrested and Mr.
Augstein turned himself in to the police. The
unfolding drama drew widespread criticism, within Germany and abroad,
and finally led to the downfall of Franz Josef
Strauss, the then powerful West German defense minister.

The affair was seen as a test of whether West Germany's democracy could
survive the collision between press and
politicians.

The treason allegations were dropped for lack of evidence. Mr. Strauss'
career, which could arguably have led him later
to the chancellorship  he lost a bid for the top office in 1980  was
dogged from then on by intimations that he
acted to restrain press freedom.

Mr. Augstein meanwhile had cemented Der Spiegel's credentials as an
emblem of West German democracy and the
freedom of its press, and its stark contrast with the Soviet Union's
grip on the Communist regime in East Germany.

Apart from a brief and unimpressive foray as a legislator for the Free
Democrats in 1972, Mr. Augstein remained
publisher and chief editorial writer  a position that gave him great
influence  until his death.

The combative style of Der Spieel gained Mr. Augstein some enemies
during his long career, but politicians and
journalistic colleagues joined in tributes to him today.

Without him and Der Spiegel, there is a lot that would never have been
said or written in Germany, said Angela
Merkel, head of the Christian Democrats. Michael Naumann, publisher of
the weekly Die Zeit, said, Augstein achieved
power by criticizing the powerful  to the good of the republic.

In the 1990's, with Germany unified and the cold war over, the big
issues became less obvious and Mr. Augstein's
dominance in German journalism was suddenly challenged by an upstart
news weekly called Focus that began
publishing in 1993 and competed with Der Spiegel for readers and

Squire Bozorth, Adviser to Charities, Dies at 67

 quire Newland Bozorth, a New York lawyer who specialized in estate
matters and who was a longtime adviser to
 major charitable organizations, died Tuesday in Manhattan. He was
67.

The cause was prostate cancer, his family said.

After graduating from New York University Law School in 1961, he joined
the firm of Milbank, Tweed, Hadley 
McCloy, becoming a partner in 1970 and a consulting partner in 1995, a
position he held at his death.

As a young associate he joined the legal staff of the Rockefeller
Family Offices for three years in the early 1960's. He
later came to represent a number of family members and their estates,
including the estate of Nelson A. Rockefeller,
the vice president and governor of New York.

Through his representation of the Rockefeller family, he became an
adviser to charitable institutions associated with
them and was chief legal adviser to Rockefeller University from 1967 to
1995.

He was a trustee of the Diocese of New York from 1995-98 and of the
Cathedral of St. John the Divine from 1999
until his death.

Mr. Bozorth is survived by his wife, the former Louise Crosby Mathews,
a son, Squire Mathews Bozorth of Portland,
Ore., and a daughter, Caroline Rutgers Sayan of New York City.

'The Age of Sacred Terror': Don't Bother Me

here is a scene in this important book that tells a great deal
about the failure of the American government to
prevent the terrorist attacks on 9/11. In 1999, a National
Security Council staffer was meeting with a pair of
F.B.I. officials at the White House. The N.S.C. man was excited and
surprised to learn from some old press clippings
that Ayman al-Zawahiri, the much-feared Egyptian terrorist and deputy
to Osama bin Laden, had visited the United
States on a fund-raising trip in the early 1990's. ''I couldn't believe
it,'' he exclaimed to the F.B.I. men. ''Did you know
that?'' The two gumshoes nodded warily. ''Well,'' the staffer
continued, ''if he was here, someone was handling his
travel and arranging his meetings and someone was giving him money. Do
you know who these people are? Do you
have them covered? There are cells here and we need to know about
them.'' ''Yeah, yeah, we know. Don't worry
about it,'' the F.B.I. officials replied.

What the bureau men really meant was: back off. Leave us alone. The
authors of ''The Age of Sacred Terror'' have
some experience dealing with balky F.B.I. agents. Daniel Benjamin and
Steven Simon were, respectively, the director
and the senior director for counterterrorism on the security council
staff during the Clinton administration. ''There is a
saying bureaucrats use when the White House becomes too intrusive or
inquisitive: 'Don't get in our knickers,' ''
Benjamin and Simon write. Whenever council officials started pushing
the F.B.I. -- or the C.I.A. or the military -- on
ways of dealing with Al Qaeda, the message back was almost invariably:
out of our knickers.

As it turns out, the F.B.I. wasn't paying much attention to Al Qaeda,
and no amount of hand-wringing by overworked
and anonymous White House aides was going to make them. The C.I.A. and
Pentagon were not much more
responsive, according to Benjamin and Simon, whose frustration is
palpable in their revealing, if slightly defensive,
account of the pre-9/11 war on terror. They have written a surprisingly
lively -- and disturbing -- tale of bureaucratic
vexation.

The story begins slowly, with a labored retelling of the terrorists'
progress from the first World Trade Center attack in
1993 to the devastation in 2001. The authors, who now work for research
institutes, are more animated when they
contemplate the cosmic imperatives of religious fanaticism. But their
real expertise kicks in when they describe how the
White House staff tried, with a notable lack of success, to pull the
mulish national security bureaucracy into the hunt
for Al Qaeda.

''There are few more durable illusions in American life than the
omnipotent presidency,'' the authors write. ''Yet anyone
who has worked in the White House knows that the office has remarkably
little real power.'' White House aides, cabinet
secretaries, even the president are hard put to get the bureaucracy to
do their bidding. Inertia and ingrained
prejudices get in the way of any real policy shift that conflicts with
the inbred culture of a government agency. If the
White House pushes too hard, the bureaucracy knows how to push back, by
leaking to reporters or congressional
investigators eager for conflict and scandal.

At first slow to recognize the rise of Al Qaeda, Clinton's national
security staff was, by the late 1990's, in a state of
high agitation. The president himself was fixated on the risk of a germ
warfare attack. Though the authors are coy
about saying so, Clinton apparently gave the O.K. to kill Osama bin
Laden. The security council's energetic, sometimes
abrasive chief for counterterrorism, Richard Clarke, hectored the
bureaucracy to move against the terrorists. In 1998,
Clark and the national security adviser, Sandy Berger, led senior
officials through a ''tabletop'' exercise, war-gaming a
terrorist attack against America. ''Consciousness of the problem of
weapons of mass destruction terror rose almost
vertiginously,'' Benjamin and Simon write.

And yet the C.I.A., F.B.I. and military remained standoffish and
sluggish. The intelligence community knew that bin
Laden was somewhere in Afghanistan. A United States submarine cruised
outside the Persian Gulf, ready to lob a
cruise missile. Twice, the sub activated the gyroscopes of the
missile's guidance system in preparation to launch, but
the intelligence was never good enough to pull the trigger. It took
about six hours to get a cruise missile lined up to
fire, not fast enough to pin down the elusive bin Laden.

The White House did inquire, a little gingerly perhaps, into the
possibility of sending spies or soldiers into Afghanistan to
hunt for the Qaeda chiefs. The C.I.A. seemed reluctant to acknowledge
that it had a unit that could be used for such

 Schweizer reveals that the KGB ran a disinformation campaign in its
 covert
 efforts to influence the media and secure the election for the
 liberal
 Mondale.

 KGB residencies outside the United States were ordered to do whatever
 they
 could to discredit Reagan.

 According to KGB documents from the Mitrokhin Archive, the largest
 collection of KGB documents available in the West, and KGB defector
 Oleg
 Gordievsky, the KGB decided on February 25, 1983, to do what it could
 to
 defeat Reagan, Schweizer told NewsMax.com.

 KGB officers listed five active measures to be used to discredit
 Reagan and
 benefit Mondale: Attack Reagan's alleged militarist adventurism, his
 personal responsibility for the arms race, his support for repressive
 regimes around the world, his efforts to destroy the so-called
 'national
 liberation movements,' and his hard line over missiles in Europe.

 All of these allegations were standard issues for the liberal media
 and
 appeasement-minded left-wing Democrats during the Reagan years, and
 fit
 right in with Mondale's criticisms of the president.

 In a TV commercial, for example, Mondale fell right in line with the
 KGB's
 charge that Reagan was responsible for the arms race.

 Said Mondale, Our hopes for tomorrow depend on halting the arms
 race, but
 the race goes on.

 In a radio address on Oct. 20, 1984, President Reagan attacked
 Mondale for
 his views on the Soviet Union.

 Said Reagan: What troubles me most is how little he seems to have
 learned
 about the dangers of weakness and naïve thinking. I don't question
 his
 patriotism; I do question his judgment. In 1968 he said that the days
 of
 Soviet suppression by force were over. Then the Soviets invaded
 Czechoslovakia.

 But he didn't learn. He voted against American military strength
 during the
 1970s, even as the Soviets were embarking upon the most massive
 military
 buildup in history.

 After the Soviets invaded Afghanistan in 1979, Mr. Mondale still
 hadn't
 learned. He said: 'I cannot understand. It just baffles me why the
 Soviets
 these last few years have behaved as they have. And why do they have
 to
 build up all those arms?'

 Well, today he still advocates unilateral cuts in important weapons
 systems, still argues for a freeze, which his own running mate admits
 is not
 fully verifiable and Mr. Carter's former national security adviser
 describes
 as a hoax.

 Senator Glenn, a Democrat, has warned that 'Walter Mondale's defense
 policies would emasculate America.' Senator Hollings, a Democrat,
 said,
 'Walter Mondale thinks the Soviet Union would never violate an arms
 agreement. I think he's naïve.'

 On domestic policy, Schweizer reported, the KGB tried to spread the
 word
 that Reagan was a racist, his administration was corrupt and he was a
 flunky
 of the military-industrial complex.

 Many of these criticisms mirrored those that Mondale made in his
 campaign,
 the author told NewsMax.com.

 For example, Mondale claimed that Reagan had ceded the moral high
 ground to
 the Soviets because of his hard-line foreign policy positions - the
 very
 policies that finally brought the evil empire crashing down.

 The Soviet Union is out of business, no thanks to Mr. Mondale.

 Capitol Hill (CNSNews.com) - Prior to the capture of Beltway Sniper
 suspects John Allen Muhammad and John Lee Malvo, an
 unconfirmed number of Maryland gun owners received surprise visits
 from the FBI as part of the investigation. One such gun owner had
 a surprise of his own for the agents when they arrived at his home.

 Jeff Brown of Gaithersburg, Md., was a little nervous when he heard
 the voicemail message from an FBI agent on the sniper task
 force who wanted to visit Brown at his home to check a .223 caliber
 semi-automatic rifle Brown purchased in 1993. Adding to that
 apprehension was the fact that Brown owns and drives a full-sized
 white panel van, the type of vehicle investigators believed the
 sniper was driving.

 I expected, actually, to be pulled over and spread-eagle on the
 street at some point, Brown told CNSNews.com Monday. When he
 called, I knew their database had had a double hit. A white van and a
 .223 rifle? I knew they were coming.

 In a subsequent telephone conversation, Metzger reportedly told Brown
 that agents merely wanted to verify the serial number of the
 rifle and confirm that it was, in fact, still physically in Brown's
 possession. The two scheduled an appointment to accomplish those
 goals.

 But Brown later learned that the agents had tried at least once to
 make an unannounced visit, and only called because they were
 unable to catch him at home.

 Once I told some of my friends in the pro-gun community what was
 happening, they began to relate some stories to me about guys
 having their guns confiscated, for so-called 'ballistic
 fingerprinting,' and not getting their guns back, Brown explained.
 I
 became alarmed.

 Larry Pratt, executive director of Gun Owners of America, said the
 attitude of the federal agents comes as a result of years of
 accepting gun control as somehow useful for solving crimes.

 The [Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms] went to the stores and
 got the lists of gun owners that had something that could fire
 a .223. But, it didn't solve the crime, Pratt noted. The only
 reason we find that gun registration is 'useful' is for
 confiscation.

 FBI Agents 'Were Not Happy'

 Brown's apprehension prompted him to contact an attorney, who
 instructed him on preparing for the visit. So, when FBI Special Agent
 Greg Metzger and his partner arrived at Brown's home for their
 scheduled meeting, they were greeted by Brown and his wife, Mary,
 along with reporters and photographers from various media outlets.

 As Brown described the situation, the agents were a little bit
 miffed.

 They were not happy, he observed. They just were not interested in
 being around any cameras.

 The agents asked Brown to step outside the home, away from the
 television crew, to talk.

 Can we, uh ... come here, one of the agents said to Brown.
 Obliging, Brown stepped away from the door to speak with the agents,
 but still within view of the camera.

 Brown began recapping the agreement he had made with Special Agent
 Metzger. But when one of the agents realized Brown was wearing a
 wireless microphone, he stopped the conversation short.

 Do you have a microphone on? the agent asked as he reached toward
 the microphone clipped to Brown's shirt. Brown backed away and
 continued talking, but the agent interrupted him again.

 Can you do me a favor? the agent asked. Can you take the apparatus
 off that you have on? I'd like to speak to you privately.

 Brown complied, but only after summoning his wife to serve as a
 witness to the conversation with the agents. Out of the camera's
 view, and believing they could not be heard, the agents challenged
 Brown about the presence of the media.

 They were belligerent, at that point, with me. They weren't
 threatening me or pushing me around or touching me or anything like
 that, but their mannerisms and attitude quickly became offended and
 belligerent, Brown recalled. I was thinking to myself, 'See,
 this is what I was afraid would happen if you guys came into my
 house, especially if I was alone.'

 'Don't You Know People Are Dying?'

 Parts of the conversation picked up by the camera's long-range
 microphone confirm Brown's account of what happened next.

 Why didn't you give us a chance to do what we said we were going to
 do instead of ambushing us with the media? Why didn't you trust
 us? one agent asked.

 Brown said it was not so much the words the agents used, as their
 attitude and body language that made him uncomfortable.

 There was some lecturing about it, he said recalling one comment
 that did unnerve him.

 One thing they said was, 'Don't you know people are dying and we're
 just trying to do our job?' Brown recalled, Of course, the
 inference was that I didn't care that there were people dying and I
 was trying to interfere with them doing their job.

Everyone knows la douce France: the France of
wonderful food and wine,
beautiful landscapes, splendid châteaux and
cathedrals. More tourists (60
million a year) visit France than any country in
the world by far. Indeed,
the Germans have a saying, not altogether
reassuring for the French: to
live as God in France. Half a million Britons
have bought second homes
there; many of them bore their friends back home
with how they order these
things better in France.
But there is another growing, and much less
reassuring, side to France. I go
to Paris about four times a year and thus have a
sense of the evolving
preoccupations of the French middle classes. A few
years ago it was schools:
the much vaunted French educational system was
falling apart; illiteracy was
rising; children were leaving school as ignorant
as they entered, and much
worse-behaved. For the last couple of years,
though, it has been crime: l'
insécurité, les violences urbaines, les
incivilités. Everyone has a tale to
tell, and no dinner party is complete without a
horrifying story. Every
crime, one senses, means a vote for Le Pen or
whoever replaces him.
I first saw l'insécurité for myself about eight
months ago. It was just off
the Boulevard Saint-Germain, in a neighborhood
where a tolerably spacious
apartment would cost $1 million. Three
youths-Rumanians-were attempting
quite openly to break into a parking meter with
large screwdrivers to steal
the coins. It was four o'clock in the afternoon;
the sidewalks were crowded,
and the nearby cafés were full. The youths behaved
as if they were simply
pursuing a normal and legitimate activity, with
nothing to fear.
Eventually, two women in their sixties told them
to stop. The youths,
laughing until then, turned murderously angry,
insulted the women, and
brandished their screwdrivers. The women
retreated, and the youths resumed
their work.
A man of about 70 then told them to stop. They
berated him still more
threateningly, one of them holding a screwdriver
as if to stab him in the
stomach. I moved forward to help the man, but the
youths, still shouting
abuse and genuinely outraged at being interrupted
in the pursuit of their
livelihood, decided to run off. But it all could
have ended very
differently.
Several things struck me about the incident: the
youths' sense of
invulnerability in broad daylight; the
indifference to their behavior of
large numbers of people who would never dream of
behaving in the same way;
that only the elderly tried to do anything about
the situation, though
physically least suited to do so. Could it be that
only they had a view of
right and wrong clear enough to wish to intervene?
That everyone younger
than they thought something like: Refugees . . .
hard life . . . very poor
. . . too young to know right from wrong and
anyway never taught . . . no
choice for them . . . punishment cruel and
useless? The real criminals,
indeed, were the drivers whose coins filled the
parking meters: were they
not polluting the world with their cars?
Another motive for inaction was that, had the
youths been arrested, nothing
would have happened to them. They would have been
back on the streets within
the hour. Who would risk a screwdriver in the
liver to safeguard the parking
meters of Paris for an hour?
The laxisme of the French criminal justice system
is now notorious. Judges
often make remarks indicating their sympathy for
the criminals they are
trying (based upon the usual generalizations about
how society, not the
criminal, is to blame); and the day before I
witnessed the scene on the
Boulevard Saint-Germain, 8,000 police had marched
to protest the release
from prison on bail of an infamous career armed
robber and suspected
murderer before his trial for yet another armed
robbery, in the course of
which he shot someone in the head. Out on bail
before this trial, he then
burgled a house. Surprised by the police, he and
his accomplices shot two of
them dead and seriously wounded a third. He was
also under strong suspicion
of having committed a quadruple murder a few days
previously, in which a
couple who owned a restaurant, and two of their
employees, were shot dead in
front of the owners' nine-year-old daughter.
The left-leaning Libération, one of the two daily
newspapers the French
intelligentsia reads, dismissed the marchers,
referring with disdainful
sarcasm to la fièvre flicardiaire-cop fever. The
paper would no doubt have
regarded the murder of a single journalist-that is
to say, of a full human
being-differently, let alone the murder of two
journalists or six; and of
course no one in the newspaper acknowledged that
an effective police force
is as vital a guarantee of personal freedom as a
free press, and that the
thin blue line that separates man from brutality
is exactly that: thin. This
is not a decent thing for an intellectual to say,
however true it might

brain-dead, an improvement in his condition has been noted,
and family
members request that prayers be recited on his behalf.  His
Jewish name is
Yisrael ben Devorah.  Rubin was imprisoned almost a year

conspiracy to attack a mosque and a Congressman's office.
American law
enforcement officials reported yesterday that Rubin had
tried to take his
own life by cutting his throat, but close friends,

The Israeli owner of a burial box believed to hold the remains of the
brother of Jesus is under investigation for allegedly acquiring the
box
illegally. Oded Golan is suspected of illegally purchasing the burial
box, the Israeli daily Ha'aretz reported. According to the Antiquities
Law, any artifact discovered or found in Israel after 1978, when the
law
was enacted, is state property. The burial box has been at the center
of

Jewish Defense League Leader Declared Brain Dead in Suicide

OS ANGELES, Nov. 4  Irv Rubin, the leader of the Jewish Defense
League, was declared brain-dead today after
what federal authorities called a suicide attempt earlier in the
day.

Mr. Rubin was in jail here on charges of plotting to bomb a mosque and
the office of an Arab-American congressman.

Mr. Rubin used a razor to slash his neck and throat and then fell or
jumped from a balcony at the federal Metropolitan
Detention center as he and other inmates lined up for breakfast before
5:30 a.m., a spokesman for the United States
Marshals Service said.

We're told that he is brain-dead and on life support, Mr. Rubin's
lawyer, Peter Morris, said.

Mr. Rubin's family said he had been attacked by someone. My husband
would never kill himself. This was a hit, this
was a hit, said his wife, Shelley Rubin.

I saw my husband yesterday. He was just the same as before. He didn't
say goodbye. He said I will see you in court
tomorrow. He was fine, she said.

Mr. Rubin and an associate were arrested on Dec. 11 on charges of
plotting to bomb the King Fahd mosque in Culver
City and an office of Representative Darrell Issa, Republican of
California, who is the grandson of Lebanese
immigrants.

Mr. Rubin was arrested after an F.B.I. informer delivered an explosive
powder that the authorities believed was the
last component in making pipe bombs. The charges carry up to 40 years
in prison.

Mr. Rubin, who by his own account has been arrested more than 40 times,
joined the J.D.L. early in the 1970's and
quickly moved up, becoming chairman in 1985.

In 1989, the leader of the rival Jewish Defense Organization, Mordechai
Levy, was convicted of assault after firing
shots at Mr. Rubin and wounding three others in New York.

According to his biography, Mr. Rubin learned to fight anti-Semitism
while growing up in Montreal, where some hotel
owners and other business people hung signs reading `No Dogs or Jews
Allowed' on their doors and where French
Canadian schoolchildren taunted him because he was Jewish.

His family emigrated to the United States in 1961 and he became a
citizen and joined the Air Force in 1966, serving
four years.

In 1973, he served in Israel's civil defense corps during the Yom
Kippur War.

The J.D.L., whose symbol is a raised fist inside a Star of David, has
the motto Never Again, referring to the
Holocaust.

It was founded in 1968 by Meir Kahane to mount armed response to
anti-Semitic acts in New York City.

  On April 24, 2001 the Baltimore Sun and ABC News reported on a
  shocking, declassified Pentagon document, titled Operation
  Northwoods.  In Operation Northwoods the Chairman of the Joint
 Chiefs
  of Staff called for hijacking jet airliners, attacking U.S.
 military
  bases, blowing up U.S. ships and wounding civilians in Miami,
 Florida
  and Washington, D.C. using paramilitary sniper teams. Page eight of
  the formerly Top Secret Pentagon plan stated that casualty lists
 in
  U.S. Newspapers would cause a helpful wave of national
 indignation.
  The opening paragraph in the Baltimore Sun read U.S. leaders
 proposed
  in 62 a secret plan to commit terrorist acts against Americans and
  blame Cuba to create a pretext for invasion.
  The Northwoods Document spells out the U.S. Government's plan
 to
  frame innocent people for the shootings and bombings that the U.S.
  Government was preparing to commit. Page 9 of the Northwoods
 Document
  states that after the Government carried out shootings and bombings
 in
  Washington D.C. that the arrest of Cuban agents and the release of
  prepared documents substantiating Cuban involvement also would be
  helpful in projecting the idea of an irresponsible government. Now
 in
  2002 they're telling us that they think that they have the two men
  responsible for the sniper shootings in DC. Can the government be
  trusted?
  Forty years after the Northwoods plan was rejected by John F.
  Kennedy, we see striking similarities between the sniper attacks
 and
  the terrorist activities called for in the Northwoods plan.
 Whereas
  the Northwoods document planned to create a pretext for war with
 Cuba,
  the sniper attacks are being used as a pretext to put the military
 on
  the streets of America and to push for gun control.  Now, White
 House
  officials are saying that theres a good chance that al-Qaeda or
 Iraq
  are behind the sniper attacks and are warning the American people
 to
  look for similar attacks in other cities, thus creating a timely
  pretext justifying  military action to capture Middle Eastern and
  Central Asian oil supplies in a war with Iraq.
  On his Nationally Syndicated Radio Show, Documentary Filmmaker
  Alex Jones has consulted with many law enforcement and military
  experts, including Colonel Craig Roberts (formerly of U.S. Army
  Intelligence, a former Marine Corps Sniper and the Best-selling
 Author
  of One Shot One Kill) who stated on-air that this operation could
 only
  be State-sponsored and was clearly the work of a rogue element from
  the top levels of global intelligence agencies.  On The Alex Jones
  Show, Roberts said that the MO of the sniper attacks are indicative
 of
  a 2-3 man team trained in the Special Forces ambush tactics of
  reconnaissance, insertion, concealment and successful evasion.
  According to Jones research, the sniper teams attack profile is
  consistent with U.S. Special Forces ambush assassination tactics.
  Best-selling Doubleday Author James Bamford, who broke the
  Northwoods Story in His Book, Body of Secrets reported on page 82
  that, the plan, which had been written with the approval of the
  Chairman and every member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff called for
  innocent people to be shot on American Streets.
   Says Jones, In Operation Northwoods, we have a declassified
 U.S.
  Government document, approved right up to the President, that
  advocates carrying out terrorism against the American people to
  terrify them into accepting tyranny.  It is now public knowledge
 that
  Roosevelt allowed the Japanese to attack Pearl Harbor as a pretext
 for
  war and that the Gulf of Tonkin attack that launched the Vietnam
 War
  was staged by LBJ.  This is all now admitted historical fact, and
  there is no way to ignore the U.S. government terror plan contained
 in
  the Northwoods document.  The plan even lists the cities to be

Despite having been linked to Nazi crimes against the Jews, former
United
Nations Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim continues to receive a
six-figure
pension from the world body, the New York Daily News reports.

Waldheim, who served as a Wehrmacht intelligence officer and has been
on
a US Justice Department 'watch list' since 1987, receives an annual
pension of $124,754. He served two five-year terms as the UN's chief
official from 1972 to 1982.

Former US Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, who served as US
representative to the UN from 1975 to 1976, denounced the continued
payments to Waldheim.

The awful fact that he still receives a UN pension speaks to the
corruption of an institution that has abandoned the principles on
which
it was established, he said, adding, Waldheim was a low point in UN
history.

In the mid-1980's, a Justice Department probe revealed that Waldheim
had
assisted or participated in Nazi deportations and executions of
Greek
and Yugoslav Jews and allied soldiers in the Balkans during World War
II.
In 1986, Moynihan introduced a nonbinding rider to a congressional
anti-terrorism bill that would have frozen Waldheim's pension by
withholding U.S. contributions to it. The measure was approved, but no
action has ever been taken to implement it.

Waldheim, who is now 83, will continue to receive his UN pension until
his death, at which time his widow will collect half of it annually
until
she dies.

The paper notes that when Waldheim retired from the UN in 1982, his
pension was $80,000 per year, but that it was repeatedly increased
even
as evidence surfaced regarding his involvement in war-time atrocities.

Oct. 14 issueFor six decades, historians have debated the Allied
reaction to Adolf Hitler's final solution. Amid the complexities of
war
and the fog of battle, could Washington and London have done more to
save
Europe's Jews? Why not try to save Jewish lives by bombing the death
camps and rail lines to Auschwitz.


REVERED IN MEMORY as a great war president,
Franklin Roosevelt has
always been at the center of the mystery. For generations historians
have
had no firsthand evidence that FDR was directly involved in the
decision
not to attack Auschwitz. Here, in an exclusive book excerpt from The
Conquerors: Roosevelt, Truman and the Destruction of Hitler's Germany
1941-1945 (Simon  Schuster), Michael Beschloss provides a surprising
new account of what the president actually knew and what he said and
did.

   By the summer of 1944, Adolf Hitler and the Nazis had murdered
millions of Jews. Jewish leaders implored Winston Churchill and
Franklin
Roosevelt to try to slow the killing by bombing the death complex at
Auschwitz and the railroad lines that supplied it.

   For almost two years, Churchill and FDR had been quietly
receiving
evidence of Hitler's ghastly effort to remove an entire people from
the
face of the earth. Churchill appeared interested in a military strike
against the camps. He told his Foreign secretary, Anthony Eden, that
Hitler's war against the Jews was probably the greatest and most
horrible crime ever committed in the whole history of the world,
adding:
Get everything out of the Air Force you can, and invoke me, if
necessary. In July 1944 Churchill was told that U.S. bomber pilots
could
do the job best, but that it would be costly and hazardous.

But America was the senior partner in the alliance. Washington
would have to make the call. Today FDR's most stalwart defenders
insist
that the best way to save Jews was to win the European war as quickly
as
possible. Some argue that bombing might have only briefly stopped the
slaughter, before the Nazis rebuilt the camps or used other swift and
brutal means of killing Jews -- and that it would have killed Jewish
inmates. But the eloquent Auschwitz survivor Elie Wiesel wishes that
the
Americans had bombed Auschwitz, noting that he and his fellow inmates
were no longer afraid of death -- at any rate, not of that death.

In Washington, Treasury Secretary Henry
Morgenthau, Jr., was
heartsick over what he was discovering about the murder of the Jews of
Europe. A Hudson Valley neighbor of FDR's, Morgenthau was Roosevelt's
closest friend in the government and only the second Jew in U.S.
history
to be in a president's Cabinet. He was, however, so unobservant a Jew
that he had never attended a Passover Seder.

Morgenthau had long refrained from jeopardizing his friendship
with Roosevelt -- which he called the most important thing in his
life -- by
special pleading on Jewish matters. After World War II began, FDR had
privately said to Morgenthau and a Catholic appointee, Leo Crowley,
You
know this is a Protestant country, and the Catholics and Jews are here
under sufferance. He bluntly told them it was up to you to go
along
with anything I want.

But the Holocaust had radicalized Morgenthau. Even if it meant
antagonizing Roosevelt, the Treasury secretary was bent on trying to
slow
the killing and also crush postwar Germany with a plan to make the
conquered country stew in its own juice. When Secretary of War Henry
Stimson told Morgenthau that his plan was too harsh on the Germans,
Morgenthau replied that it was not nearly as bad as sending people
to
gas chambers.

Morgenthau consented to have his former aide John Pehle, director of
the
War Refugee Board, cautiously explore whether bombing Auschwitz and/or
the rail lines might save a serious number of Jewish lives. The matter
was referred to Assistant Secretary of War John McCloy, who had so
exasperated Morgenthau by refusing to let the U.S. military help save
Jewish refugees that Morgenthau had privately denounced McCloy as an
oppressor of the Jews. (McCloy had vehemently denied the charge.)


McCloy saw the Auschwitz bombing proposal as a flagrant violation of
FDR's demand that U.S. military resources be used only for direct
efforts
to win the war. Flatly and repeatedly, McCloy said no.

Much of the modern indignation at the American failure to bomb
Auschwitz has been centered on John McCloy. At best McCloy has been
excoriated for his bullheaded concentration on traditional military
targets; at worst he has been attacked for callous indifference to the
murder of the Jews.

Didn't McCloy discuss such an important matter with the

 What could be more terrifying? An unknown shooter is on the
 loose, striking apparently at random in broad daylight from
 no fixed location. Women, children, men, whites, blacks,
 Asians, professionals, working people -- no one is safe.

 For ordinary people, the ongoing murders in Maryland,
 Virginia, and Washington, DC, are a nightmare. For the
 nation's media, they are high drama. For those who hate
 firearms ... these murders are the best thing that's
 happened since Columbine. The horror is tailor-made to
 further their agenda. And it WILL further their agenda if
 the public remains ignorant and gun owners remain too
 trusting of politicians.

 PERFECT TIMING FOR TERROR

 Our sympathies go out to the victims and their families and
 to the tens of thousands who suddenly wonder if they're
 carrying invisible targets on their own backs. Our hearts
 are with the police who are charged with solving a type of
 deadly crime no one has ever seen before.

 But to anyone who cares about rights and freedom, we say,
 Watch out. This situation is dangerous to tens of
 millions -- and to freedom itself -- and not just to the
 thousands who are directly at risk.

 The timing is too good for the victim-disarmament crowd.
 And without yielding to paranoia, let us count some of the
 ways:

 * The 1994 assault weapons ban will sunset in 2004 unless
 Congress re-authorizes it. All those firearms that were
 banned because of their appearance (and because they didn't
 meet arbitrary, bureaucratically defined, and highly
 changeable sporting purpose criteria) are scheduled to
 become legal to manufacture again. All those magazines that
 can hold more than 10 rounds will be legal to manufacture
 again. It will once again be legal to import the group of
 shotguns administratively banned by Ronald Reagan and the
 group of semi-automatic rifles similarly banned by the first
 President Bush. (Both of these executive bans were codified
 in the 1994 law.)

 * Now -- just at this crucial time -- comes the horror.
 Suddenly a skilled shooter (described by a police
 profiler -- or stereotyper -- as someone who probably
 reads _Soldier of Fortune_ ) begins attacking people,
 apparently with the popular .223 caliber of firearm. Almost
 immediately after the shootings began, and long before
 anyone knew the exact type of weapon used, police turned up
 in the national media holding up black, scary-looking
 carbines. We wonder why they participated in this speculative
 and highly dubious display, at a time when they were releasing
 few facts about the case. But even more important, we wonder
 why (when, remember, they didn't know the weapon being used)
 they choose to display or the media chose only to show, the
 formidable-looking banned versions of the .223 and not its
 more benign-looking (and unbanned) cousins like the Ruger
 Mini-14 or any bolt-action .223 from any number of
 manufacturers.

 * A little more than a week before the shootings began, a
 group of law-enforcement association representatives, speaking
 at a Brady Campaign/Million Mom March news conference,
 announced support for re-authorization of the ban
 ( http://www.bradycampaign.org/press/release.asp?Record=425 ).
 Just two days before the shootings began in Maryland, the
 Brady Campaign and the Million Mom March announced their
 intention to start a TV ad and leafletting campaign
 condemning one Maryland gubernatorial candidate's voting
 record on firearms
 ( http://www.bradycampaign.org/press/release.asp?Record=427 ).

 * Even while waving military-looking firearms before the TV
 cameras, police spokespeople in Maryland were also stating,
 repeatedly, that the weapon used could be a hunting rifle.
 Don't forget that, ever since 1963 when John F. Kennedy was
 reportedly shot with a bolt-action rifle, there have been
 efforts to ban such rifles, as well. As early as the hearings
 on the 1968 Gun Control Act, the suggestion was made to
 outlaw scopes on rifles. More recently, gun-prohibitionists
 have begun referring to scoped hunting guns as long-range
 sniper rifles. Until now, all attempts to ban these guns
 have failed because millions recognize that these are the
 ordinary deer rifles or varmint guns used by men and women
 everywhere. But the drive is on to ban them, and as we've
 already seen, the drive to ban guns is a gradual, decades-
 long process. The enemies of freedom are patient.

BERLIN - German publisher Bertelsmann said Monday it will adopt as its
official history a report by an independent panel of historians that
found the company made indirect use of Jewish slave laborers during
World
War II.

Chief executive Gunter Thielen reaffirmed the firm's sincere regret
over inaccuracies in the company's previous history and its activities
during the Nazi era as Ertelsmann presented the final report by a
commission led by Israeli historian Saul Friedlaender. Bertelsmann
asked
Friedlaender to investigate its wartime activities in 1998, after a
German journalist published a story accusing the publisher of covering
up
its Nazi ties.

We have learned that we cannot neglect our history, rather, our goal
was
to uncover the truth and learn from the mistakes that we have made,
Thielen said in a statement, adding that all the material used for the
800-page report would be made publicly available.

The commission that while the company used no slave laborers at its
headquarters in Guetersloh, printing facilities that were used by
Bertelsmann in Nazi-occupied Vilnius, Lithuania - and likely in Riga,
Latvia as well - forced Jews from the local ghettos to work.

It is unclear if C. Bertelsmann had any influence on the work
conditions
in these presses, and if, on account of the use of cheaper (Jewish)
forced labor, the move to the Baltic for printing meant saving money,
the report concluded.

Bertelsmann used a total of about 100 printing shops on a contract
basis
during World War II, about half in Germany and half in foreign
countries
- mostly in the Netherlands - said Reinhard Wittmann, one of the
report's
authors.

Because of the poor state of archives in the Baltic states, it proved
impossible to determine if other printing houses used by Bertelsmann
there employed slave labor, or if Bertelsmann was even aware that the
two
in Vilnius and Riga did, Wittmann said in a telephone interview.

We don't know if Bertelsmann knew about these slave laborers in the
printing shops, Wittmann said. All we know is that there were slave
laborers in these printing shops, and that Bertelsmann used these
printers for their books.

Still, the committee found that there was no doubt the company had
close
ties to the Nazi regime, particularly the Propaganda Ministry.

A total circulation of 19 million volumes during World War II made the
company the largest publisher for the German army, and it was
responsible
for more than a quarter of the 75,000 texts distributed to soldiers,
including manuals and propaganda material.

With the pamphlet series Exciting Stories, sold by the millions to
teen-agers and soldiers at the front, Bertelsmann placed itself in
the
service of a nationalist, and in the end racist and anti-Bolshevik
propaganda, the report said.

Booklets on battles during the war were in complete harmony with the
regime's wishes the war of aggression was depicted as a big adventure
with a sure ending in victory by mentally and technically superior
German
troops.

The historians said they had disproved a long-held contention that the
company, founded in 1835 as a publisher of prayer books and hymnals,
was
shut down by the Nazis in 1944 because the then-chairman, Heinrich
Mohn,
was a devout Christian. They concluded the publishing house was in
fact
most likely shut down as a result of the war economy, not for
political
reasons.

In a detailed investigation of Mohn's activities, the committee found
that the chairman never joined the Nazi party but was a financial
backer
of the SS, Hitler's elite troops, and supported his children's
membership
in the Hitler Youth and other Nazi organizations.

True, he never joined the Nazi party, but his membership in the SS
patrons' group signaled his readiness for a political arrangement,
the
report said.

on the Internet, has filed charges against the left-wing discussion

Indymedia for allowing antisemitic material on their website.

The MDI has identified 24 expressions which are according to them
punishable under Dutch Law. Amongst those is a claim that 'Jews are
aiming
for world dominance, the Protocols of the Elders of Zion prove this'
and a
posting by a so-called Christian Anti-Zionist organisation
which states that it is 'already busy in Europe, intimidating and
terrorizing Jews and zionists, destroying Synagogues where hate is
preached'
.

'Lizet' of Indymedia NL is unhappy about the charges. Especially
since we
are against racism and antisemitism ourselves. It is a pity that the
MDI
did not contact us, we are perfectly willing to sit down with them and
talk
about possible removal of material

Says MDI director Ronald Eissens: We have been in contact with
Indymedia
already in July. After pressure from our side they removed some 30
expressions at that time. They co-operated, but they don't clean up
their
own mess. I warned them a few weeks ago that they had become a public
urinal and that we are not the janitor.

Also Indymedia Belgium, France, Germany Sweden and the U.S. are having
trouble for allowing antisemitism. That's why the MDI decided to press
charges. We don't do that evey day you know, Ronald Eissens says.
It
only happens when things get out of control. Our aim is removal of
racist
material from the Internet, not filing charges.

Since the mounting tension in the Middle-East the number of complaints
about antisemitism is way up, Eissens concludes. People who have
already
something against Jews use the situation in the Middle-East as an
excuse to
spout antisemitism, as a stick to hit a dog with.

At
times we have discussions about that ourselves. We try to monitor our
site
as best as possible, but sometimes something gets through. E.g. when
somebody posts a message at night or posts a reply in an old
discussion-thread.

According to the MDI the number of complaints about racist and
antisemitic
expressions have gone up again this year. Last year we received a
total of
691 complaints about 1081 expressions, at this moment we already are
on 650
and counting. We expect between 850 and 1000 complaints by the end of
this
year.

Eissens says that during the past 4 years the MDI secured 3
convictions of
on-line racists and antisemites. And right now we also have 18 cases
which
have been filed with the District Attorney.

On September 1, 2002, I wrote a column critical of the way screening
is
carried out at U.S. airports (A U.S. Police State

Since
that time I have been on ten flights. On every one of those ten
flights I
have been selected for random searches by the same airline
screeners I
criticized. Surely this was a coincidence!

Most times I was only searched once. A few times I was searched
twice. At
one airport I was searched three times! First, when I checked in my
bag at
the ticket counter, I was randomly selected to have the bag
searched. When
I was allowed to leave that area and proceed to the security
checkpoint, I
was again randomly searched. Glad that it was all over, I read a
book at
the gate until boarding began. As I got to the final barrier to
boarding my
flight, the gate check where you show your boarding pass, I was again
randomly selected.

Here's how the gate check works. (I hadn't noticed the details
before, but
since this harassment began, I have been watching the process very
carefully.) The gate agent places the boarding pass under a scanner.
If
everything is OK (which it is 95% of the time), a green light comes
on at
their console. They hand you back your boarding pass and you get on
the
plane. However, if you are randomly selected to be searched, a red
light
goes on.

After about the fifth time I was randomly selected for this honor,
I
complained about the frequency of my selection. I told the supervisor
that I
thought they should spread it around a little, particularly to the
Arabs. I
mentioned that I have observed the boarding of thousands of
passengers over
the past few months. Of the several hundred I have observed being
searched,
not one was an Arab. In fact, I even observed the red light go on at
the
gate agent's console on two occasions when Arabs were boarding
(presumably
true random selections), and the Arab passengers were waved through!

I asked why small children and grandmothers were being searched when
we know
the profile of the terrorists. A lady screener standing next to
supervisor
spoke up, We have to make it look good. It gives the passengers
confidence
that we're doing our jobs. The supervisor shot her a look that
clearly
said, Shut your mouth and get back to work, and she hurriedly left
without
another word.

Then the supervisor said something that surprised me. I wasn't
surprised by
what he said, but I was surprised by his candor. He asked, Do you
have a
connecting flight at your destination? When I replied that I did, he
said,
You can expect to be searched there as well. He said that I had
been
flagged by the system, but he didn't know why. I asked if that
meant just
on this trip or forever, but he didn't know. In the light of my
experiences
on flights since then, apparently I've been flagged forever.

What does this mean for the safety of the U.S. flying public? For
whatever
reason, I have become Public Enemy Number One. The reason I have been
flagged doesn't matter. Perhaps it is simply incompetence (there's
surely
enough of that to go around at the Transportation Safety
Administration).
Perhaps its because one of my 50,000 plus subscribers works for the
TSA and
flagged me out of spite. What matters is that precious resources are
being
used searching me and other patriotic Americans while Mohammed and
Abdullah
continue to board planes with impunity in order to preserve political
correctness.

Do you feel safer since President Bush signed the Aviation and
Transportation Security Law last November? I suspect not, especially
if you
have observed the actions of airport screeners as I have. For
instance, when
I flew into Palm Beach International Airport last night, I stood for
a few
minutes watching the thirty federal screeners manning four machines
where
they check carry-on bags. That's right - thirty people for four
machines,
and that doesn't count the local law enforcement personnel. At least
half of
the screeners were standing around chatting with one another.

Most of you have read or seen the story on TV about the fourteen
reporters
sent by the New York Daily News to fourteen different U.S. airports,
including the airports used by the 9/11 hijackers. The reporters
carried box
cutters, razor knives, and pepper spray onto airplanes. The response
from
airport security executives? They didn't say, Wow, we screwed up!
We're
going to tighten up procedures right away. They told the newspaper,
We
should arrest your people for carrying those dangerous items on
board.

John Schmidt, one of our columnists, told me a fascinating story of
his
experience at the Fort Lauderdale airport. Screeners there found a
small set
of fingernail clippers in his kitbag. The clippers contained a tiny
nail
file with a dull point, which they broke off before allowing him to
proceed.

 US Army War College Officer Strangles Wife

 In yet another case of a US Army wife murdered by
 their soldier husbands, Lieutenant Colonel David
 Bartlett Jr., 46,  of the US Army War College in
 Annapolis, Maryland has admitted strangling his wife
 Suzanne, 39, over a fight about his use of the
 Internet to watch pornography. Soon after the body of
 Suzanne was found floating in a local creek in March
 of this year,  military authorities focused the
 investigation on her husband, Lt. Col. David Bartlett.

 On Monday Bartlett confessed to her murder.  According
 to Bartlett, the couple argued for several days after
 his wife discovered he had been viewing pornography on
 the Internet. On March 19, he said, he beat her with
 an iron pestle and strangled her with a computer cord
 after she harassed him by calling  him names.

 There has recently been an epidemic of wives murdered
 by their US Army husbands.  In a bizarre coincidence
 during the six week period of June 11 to July 29, four
 Army soldiers in North Carolina killed their wives.
 All of the men were assigned to Fort Bragg, N.C. Three
 had recently returned from Afghanistan and and two of
 of the soldiers committed suicide after killing their
 spouses.

 It does not appear that the US Army is spiritually
 prepared to fight any foreign wars.  It is extremely
 disturbing that soldiers could turn to murdering their
 own wives and in many cases even their own children.
 There has also been an alarming increase in  cases of
 child abuse at US Army bases.  There are at least  two
 cases in Ft. Hood, Texas were soldiers have murdered
 their children.   In one case, a sergeant bash the
 head of his 4 month old baby daughter against a
 concrete wall and in another, a two year boy died of
 shock after being burned repeatedly with lighted
 cigarettes by his soldier father.

 The four cases at Fort Bragg are as follows:

 I.  On June 11, Sgt. 1st Class Rigoberto Nieves, a
 soldier in the 3rd Special Forces Group who had been
 back from Afghanistan just two days, shot and killed
 his wife and then turned the gun on himself.

 II.  On June 29, Master Sgt. William Wright of the
 96th Civil Affairs Battalion strangled his wife. He
 had been back from Afghanistan for a month, according
 to the Fayetteville Observer.

 III.  On July 9, Sgt. Cedric Ramon Griffin of the 37th
 Engineer Battalion was charged with stabbing his
 estranged wife, Marilyn, and then setting her home on
 fire.

 IV.  On July 19, Sgt. 1st Class Brandon Floyd shot his
 wife and then killed himself. The Fayetteville
 newspaper reported Floyd was a member of Delta Force,
 the secret anti-terrorism unit at Fort Bragg. He
 returned from Afghanistan in January.

can run header checks. I'm thinking about no longer accepting freemail

 pro-American Afghanistan smacks of WW2 and the satraps appointed by
 Adolf
 Hitler to rule his expanding empire.

Uh-oh, this almost sounds like Irving is making a negative comment
about Hitler. Has the recent shutting down of his website, and the
bankruptcy he's going through as a result of losing HIS libel suit
against Deborah Lipstadt (in which the judge agreed with Lipstadt that
Irving is not an historian), who called him a Holocaust denier --
has this started him thinking that maybe he should take another look at
Hitler in a not-so-rosy light? I'll let somebody else do the
breath-holding for me, thank you. :-D

First question when any Web site is shut down: Did they pay the bill?
I've heard of enough times where a Web site got shut down for
political reasons only to find out that the people in charge forgot to
pay ICANN for the domain name after the first year, or they didn't pay
their IP for the web hosting, that it's kind of a first assumption when
I read that a site is shut down. After the question of the bills is
answered, and after it is ascertained that the hosting IP's servers
aren't down, THEN you can start thinking about political reasons.

Saul/Paul was the one who moved the Christians away from Jewish
practice. The early Church fathers followed suit. It was really a
personality clash between 2 factions: that of James the brother of
Jesus, and the Paulists, who also included Peter. Obviously, the
Peter/Paul faction won both the day and the right to pass their version
of history down to us.

One more thing: None of the three major religions we're talking about
here REALLY encourages the in-depth, word for word study of their
sacred texts. Yes, each one does have a few scholars but they are a
distinct minority, hence the world REALLY in caps. All 3 encourage the
vast majority of their believers to take the word of the experts, be
they rabbis, sages, priests, imans, prophets, ministers, whatever they
call their most reverend leaders. Believers are not expected to think
for themselves; in fact, in Christianity, Jesus is referred to as The
Good Shepherd and he calls his followers My sheep.

I know exactly what you mean. I was brought up Roman Catholic, and we
never did Bible study in Catholic school. I went to Sunday School at
the Baptist church (because they let girls sing in the choir) and Bible
study there fell under trivial pursuit -- we played games involving
knowing the names and events, but we never studies the whys and
wherefores. For most Christians -- and I've found this to be true in
Catholic, Fundamentalist, and mainline Protestant denominations --
faith is kept simple, summed up in John 3:16. The biggest use their
Bibles get is for recording family births, marriages, and deaths in the
dozen or so blank pages between the Testaments. Start talking about the
historical or political situation behind the Bible stories and their
eyes kind of glaze over..
