To do multiple discontinuous selection in darktable, just release the Ctrl key
before that last shift-click in your description. Yes, this is a little bit
"different" from other UI behavior, and possibly not intuitive... :)

Just in the practical sense that it has resulted in two (IIRC) different people
posting here recently about it preventing them from using darktable to import
files from their camera/card in the manner that they were used to.

I'm not trying to assert anything particularly about exFAT, just pondering if
there should perhaps be another option in the import module... one that can
just be pointed to a filesystem directory like the "folder" import, but which
actually moves the files to a new location before the import. Seems like it
would add some flexibility. I personally am perfectly happy pulling the files
from my cards outside of darktable, but some people apparently feel otherwise.
I could be completely wrong about all of that. :)

As mentioned above, I've always been able to, with my Olympus cameras, going
back to at least the turn of the century. :)

I understand that this hasn't been the the case for other brands in the past. I
was hoping others on the list, who have long term experience with those, might
have perspective on how much this has or hasn't changed over the years. If not,
please ignore.

Yeah, I'm familiar with the project, I was just hoping for insights, from the
perspective of developing RAW development software, about how currently
relevant it is 20 years later *for simple retrieval of files*. I find very
little discussion about recent cameras not supporting USB storage, whereas
exFAT currently *does* present some obstacles. In light of that, it seems
possible that only using gphoto as a fallback when needed might make sense.

I'm just curious: is this still needed for file access on anything but very old
cameras? I've always used Olympus cameras that supported USB storage from the
early days, so I never developed the habit of using any special software for
this... and haven't really kept track of how the situation has evolved over the

It's possible that dcraw is no longer actively maintained, based on similar
reports.

Probably not. darktable uses RawSpeed as much as possible:

 https://github.com/darktable-org/rawspeed

so new camera support is probably best added there. That said, I just grabbed a
sample GX9 file and opened it in darktable 2.4.3 without issues, so the support
is there, you just need to update.

These are really very distinct operations. Orientation is just that -
determining whether this is a "landscape" or "portrait" orientation of the
sensor data. Most modern cameras detect and include this information in images,
and darktable will use this information when present, but every once in a while
you need to manually change this. When this is the case for several images,
it's generally easier to do it by selecting them in lighttable view and hitting
the button once. Fine rotation is just that - getting horizons level, etc...
unlike orientation, it always implies some cropping, so it's combined with the
cropping module.

Everyone has a different definition of "almost everything". Have you tried
adding the modules you find most important to your workflow to the "favorites"
group?

 https://www.darktable.org/usermanual/en/module_groups.html

Darktable also allows for a large amount of custom automation based on camera,
lens, ISO, etc... getting this set up the way you want it can greatly enhance
workflow.

My thoughts. :)

Ah, good point. I never use darktable to access a device directly (I have a
one-keypress script for pulling from cards), so I wasn't thinking about that.
Arguably, it's better for the card to just copy things over, then format in the
camera, but this may be less true with exFAT.

Assuming your system is auto-mounting the card reader or camera, did you try
pointing darktable to the mount point? The fuse module is a little different
from actual low-level OS support for the filesystem.

It really depends on the distro. I don't use /usr/local/ on slackware anymore,

I use Geeqie in a very similar way. Normally I only use its tagging ability for
files that are already JPEGs for whatever reason, but I just did a quick test
tagging a RAW file and saving the data to XMP... darktable imports the tags
just fine along with the file. Geeqie doesn't have "ratings" or "labels",
though... it does have "marks", which are just numbers 1-6. It can use these
marks for organizing files in various ways, but it doesn't seem to save them as
XMP metadata.

The best you could do would probably be to use marks as ratings, since they're
fast to apply with the keyboard, then just before importing everything into
darktable, use the marks to add ratings as tags, which you could delete in
darktable after using them to select the files and apply ratings. Possibly not
convenient, but Geeqie is a really nice, efficient program with quite a bit of
configurability as to what it spends CPU cycles and memory on. Last time I
checked, the new GTK3 build still had some odd UI quirks, so I would stick with
GTK2 for now, personally.

Note that depending on the camera model, this may or may not reflect reality...
it's worth doing a test to see, if you're planning to use it for something.
This information can also affect how vignetting correction is applied in the
"lens correction" module, for lenses that have been profiled at more than

For me, this happens when the thumbnails for the rejected images haven't
finished updating yet. Apparently the updating is done because I page through
the images in darkroom mode to view them, even though I haven't made any manual
edits (but some auto-presets are applied). My files are on local storage, and I
also have "send to trash" disabled. Maybe it's a result of files being deleted
while the background thumbnail process is still trying to access them?

This sounds good. Maybe a shortcut mapping to toggle visibility of the drawn
masks for the currently active module to go along with it? :D

Lensun uses the camera model detection for essentially two things:
* to know the crop factor of the camera model for calculation of correction
* to use the lens mount information to show you a relevant list of lenses for
manual selection

So you could basically choose any Micro 4/3 camera for that field and get the
same results.

> What should I do to make darktable automatically select my camera/lens set?

The mil-panasonic.xml file needed an entry for the camera. I added it in the
git repository, hopefully it will show up in your next update. If you really
need to, you can modify your local copy similarly, by just copying the entry
for G6, for instance, and changing that one little number. Thanks for reporting.

Wow, that looks like the tone curve module loaded a chunk of data that was

This depends on whether "do high quality resampling during export" is checked
in "core options" tab of preferences or not. It might be nice if there was a
way to make this an option per preset in the export module.

The camera entry was added long ago with this commit:

https://github.com/lensfun/lensfun/commit/ba4551a9040fea333c0af58d6f31249ad2e14c9e

It's not usual to add a compact camera without lens data now, I'm not sure if
the intention was to map it to the lens data for the G9, since it appears to
use the same lens... if you manually choose this camera and confirm that the
corrections seem to work, I'll make the change. It also appears that the G7
doesn't support RAW output with stock firmware; are you using aftermarket
firmware? If so, that should probaby be noted in the profile, especially if
this camera applies any automatic correction to JPEG output.

Also, for future reference, this is the lensfun list:

 https://sourceforge.net/p/lensfun/mailman/lensfun-users/

You can also raise issues about lensfun *profiles* here:

Maybe you don't want to wait around for the next lensfun version to be
packaged, either, so...

Did you try, as suggested by others, to install the "lensfun-tools" package, by
whatever method you normally use for package management? It sounds like this is
how your distro provides the "lensfun-update-data" script. If you then run that
script from a terminal, it *should*, with any luck, download the newest version
of the lens database used by lensfun (and by extension, darktable). If you run
the script as root, it will attempt to install to the system database location,
otherwise to your user directory. Watch the output in the terminal, it will
tell you whether things are working or not. If it works, great! If it doesn't,
report back with the error message.

After the "corrections done:" should be shown some combination of "distortion",
"TCA", and "vignetting", or "all" if that's the case. If there's no profile
for the lens, nothing is shown in that field... maybe it would make sense for
"none" to be shown instead, as it is for lenses for which a profile exists, but
when "none" is selected in the dropdown. What lens are you trying to correct?

Yes, the version declaration for versions <2 isn't required (and I don't bother
adding it to the files I'm working with up to this point); my suggestion in the
earlier thread to change it to "1" was simply because that's what the official
backported files do. It doesn't hurt. :)

Thanks, I'm well aware of that page, as I create, add, and remove database
files from my local lensfun db in the process of creating lens profiles from
user submitted files via the github repository. Not only does that page not
address my question about version differences between 1 and 2, but neither does
the more specifically-intended-to page linked from it:

 http://lensfun.sourceforge.net/manual/db_versions.html

Hence my question, but it should have been posted at the lensfun list, not
here. Sorry, disregard.

This is simply the observable difference between the version 1 files as
provided in bundles or via lensfun-update-data, and the files as they are
currently in the master branch. It is the difference between the file being
loaded by darktable or not, as empirically experienced by me during the course
of juggling many of these files.

The database files are *intended* to be user creatable, and are not library
internals. The reason is the one stated above, and it's a very good reason. :)

What exactly are the differences to watch out for? I seem to remember digging

It looks like the new additions at github are getting pushed to the sourceforge
master branch db periodically, which means that if a lens was added at github
very recently, it may not appear at sourceforge yet. Aside from that, the
sourceforge files have probably been better checked for any possible errors,
etc, and are probably the best bet. In either case, you should probably make
the following changes to the .xml file:

Remove the DOCTYPE declaration on the first line

and change the version to "1" in the line that follows

otherwise darktable may not like them (you'll see a warning on the console
output). You might want to put any that you add this way into
~/.local/share/lensfun directly, rather than the updates directory, to prevent
it being clobbered by future runs of lensfun-update-data (although hopfully any
future successful updates using this method would make the added file redundant
anyway).

Fair enough.

There is. Like I said, it's been discussed, usually because the script wasn't
working for somebody. A quick search of the archive finds, for instance:

 https://www.mail-archive.com/darktable-user@lists.darktable.org/msg03575.html

If the script is working for most people now, that's great news. I hope that's

The actual official lensfun source code repository is still the sourceforge
one. However, most of the additions to the *database* happen in a separate
repository at github; there is a daily update list available here:

 http://wilson.bronger.org/lensfun_coverage.html

Unfortunately, adding new database entries to your local lensfun install isn't
terribly straightforward at the moment... there are some threads about it in
this list's archive that shouldn't be too hard to find with a search.

As far as the "feel", it can really help (even with OpenCL) to keep denoising
off for most your editing, and only enable it last. Once I found the setting I
liked for my camera in "profiled denoise", I created a style for just that
module, and have it applied in the export module. Now I only mess with
denoising in darkroom mode for special cases. :)

Well, to be fair, the mail wasn't in response to me, and I was just skimming

Is this why I haven't been getting anywhere using intermediate-export-image?
The documentation (https://www.darktable.org/lua-api/ar01s03.html.php) shows:

function(
event : string,
image : types.dt_lua_image_t,
filename : string,
format : types.dt_imageio_module_format_t,
storage : types.dt_imageio_module_storage_t

Are the docs ahead of the releases? I'm trying to get the Exif info changed in

[darktable-user] Image information changed with Lua not appearing in exported images?

2017-08-24 Thread junkyardsparkle
I've been using a Lua script to fill the lens and focal length fields in
darktable for images taken with old manual lenses. It works fine within
darktable, allowing for detection by module presets and selection of lens
correction profiles. I just noticed, however, that the information doesn't seem
to be included in exported JPEGs; they resemble the original RAW file's (lack
of) information in these Exif fields. Do I need to do anything special to get
this information into exported Exif?

Thanks,

All that really matters is that you select a camera with exactly the same crop
factor as the one actually used, so usually anything known to use the same

The variants apparently don't work, see:

But they shouldn't be needed in this case anyway.

Otherwise, not sure why that wouldn't work.

Indeed, the camera has the same lens as the "Mark I", and the recently added

lensfun database updating options aren't working for you, try putting the

Yes, a few times I've abused this averaging in cases where it wasn't really the
optimal approach, but just because it was right there, a click away, and I
wouldn't have gotten around to doing anything with the images otherwise. The

You can, however, use darktable's "create hdr" function to produce a high
dynamic range image from a bracketed stack, and then process *that* image with
the basecurve fusion. The disadvantage compared to applying the fusion
algorithm directly to a stack of images is that it's probably less forgiving of
slight misalignment of image features.

Re: [darktable-user] Input color profile for Olympus OMD-EM5 Mk II

2017-02-06 Thread junkyardsparkle
I created profiles for the E-PL6 and E-PL7, which turned out almost exactly
similar. Since they both use the same sensor as the E-M5mkII, you may want to
give them a try:

 https://www.dropbox.com/sh/b8hgqit9n8xk8y2/AABWtUI1fIbrGyfj43tZyH6Fa?dl=0

There's also a base curve based on the default E-PL6 output, as a dtstyle. You
may want to try that, too, in combination with either my color profiles or the
standard ones.

Using these profiles with any substantial base curve gives rather strong
saturation, so I also usually auto-apply the color correction module with
saturation set to something like 0.85, for something pretty close to
out-of-camera rendering.

I used the method outlined here to create the profiles:

 http://ninedegreesbelow.com/photography/well-behaved-camera-profile.html

Good luck!

If you are converting to monochrome with the CLUT module, nothing after that
module in the pipeline (i.e. displayed higher in the modules listing) will have
color information to work with; they will all be seeing the monochrome output.

You could certainly use the "create HDR" function within darktable to use
bracketed images with the basecurve fusion. The primary advantage that I'm
aware of for doing this with enfuse outside of darktable is that it's more
forgiving of small changes (leaves in the wind, etc) between images than the
darktable "create HDR" process is.

[darktable-user] Many modules have "fusion" entries in shortcuts settings, base curve doesn't.

2017-01-22 Thread junkyardsparkle
I just now went into settings > shortcuts to see if I could bind a keyboard
input to the "auto" button in the levels module. There wasn't any such binding,
but there *was* a subsection for "fusion", which, as far as I know, only exists
in the base curve module. Looking in the base curve module bindings, there is
no "fusion" presented. Looking around some more, several other modules (bloom,
channel mixer, etc) show the "fusion" entry in their bindings. Am I confused,
or is this wrong?

Thanks, I will, if I ever need to for my actual use case. Other than an
occasional stitched panorama, I'm usually dealing with 16MP images, and so far
haven't encountered any tiling issues with those (even when testing with the
equalizer, which I rarely use for general purposes). This is another example of
how simplistic benchmark numbers can be misleading: even if a person looking at
them allowed for the fact that the test image was larger, and hence slower,
than their own use case, they might very well assume a linear relationship,
when the reality about tripping a threshold or not.

It also seems like if you're comparing the cards to a particular CPU (i7 or
what have you), you should really be using that CPU for the card tests, too...

Those benchmark totals don't give a very meaningful overview by themselves. I
just installed a 1050 on an older Phenom II box (still hoping to see
open-source AMD support some day, but can't hold my breath any longer), and
upon running the benchmark, found that it performs quite well, EXCEPT that it
chokes on that particular application of the equalizer. Falling back to CPU for
that results in 15.5 of the total 26.2 seconds, using three tiles on my slow
dual-core processor. Full output for the run is attached.

In my real-world usage, the difference is day-and-night. Export time isn't that
important to me compared to interface usability. I would probably still be
happily waiting on AMD if it weren't for the painfully slow adjustment of
rotation that I often need to do in the crop and rotate module. ;)

Re: [darktable-user] Matching White Balance

2017-01-03 Thread junkyardsparkle
Well, trying to white balance concert lighting seems like it might be a
potentially futile task, but... what I would do is use a different module,
maybe "color correction", to produce the offset from white that you want, then
apply that same setting to all the pictures that you white balance using the
dress.

Weird situations like this do come up from time to time, where it would be nice
to be able to have multiple instances of the white balance module, even though
that seems silly in theory. Other situations are where you have a known cast
from an ND filter, diopter, wide-angle adapter, or similar, and you want to
apply it to particular pictures that are differently white balanced otherwise
but taken with the same filter... just a thought.

Built on Slackware64 14.2, with the same build options I've been using for
latest releases:

  cmake \
-DCMAKE_C_FLAGS:STRING=-O2 -fPIC \
-DCMAKE_CXX_FLAGS:STRING=-O2 -fPIC\
-DOPENJPEG_LIBRARY="/usr/lib64/libopenmj2.so" \
-DOPENJPEG_INCLUDE_DIR="/usr/include/openmj2-2.1" \
-DDONT_USE_INTERNAL_LUA=Off \
-DUSE_LIBSECRET=On \
-DUSE_GNOME_KEYRING=Off \
-DBINARY_PACKAGE_BUILD=1 \
-DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=Release ..

There is none. I'd be willing to build a debug version if that would help.

Ok, to illustrate how extreme the difference is, here's the perf data for doing
the exact same thing in 2.0.7 and 2.2~rc0, essentially having only lens
correction and denoise in the history stack while moving the viewed section of
1:1 image around to random spots via the thumbnail. Same file, same settings
(other than anything that the new version changes when importing settings from
an older version), no OpenCL. The last entry for the 2.2 log was an astonishing
49 seconds! That was an outlier, but there were several between 20-30 seconds,
and even the shortest times were notably slower than the fairly consistent and
short ones in 2.0.7. If this isn't a bug, it's probably unlikely to be
considered an enhancement by most users. ;)

Thanks. I'm well aware that the denoise is computationally expensive (and
rarely have it enabled while editing). What I don't understand is why,
occasionally, the rendering time is many times more than the sum of the time
for either lens correction *or* profiled denoise, when both are enabled.
Explain like I'm five? :)

Thanks for splitting the preset storage out from the image db, very happy to
see that, and the modifier keys on the sliders is a nice UI enhancement... if I
can retrain myself to use them!

I've encountered one odd behavior, but can't quite seem to nail down exact
steps to reproduce: when viewing an image at 1:1 zoom, with lens correction and
profiled denoise enabled, it sometimes takes an *extremely* long time to render
the view, on the order of ~20 seconds or more instead of the typical 3-4. This
only happens with both of those modules enabled (even if they are the only ones
in the stack), and then only sometimes; I would say maybe about 1 in 5 times
when dragging the viewport box around in the thumbnail preview with both
modules enabled. I'm not using OpenCL. If I can narrow down the circumstances a
little more I'll file a bug report, but meanwhile maybe somebody else with
better knowledge of the internals can attempt to duplicate this behavior...

On the occasions when I use "overwrite" mode, I try to remember to set it back
to "append" immediately afterwards to avoid this kind of thing, but hearing
about this from other people makes me wonder:

Would it make sense to create stronger separation between these two operations,
given the potentially destructive effects of using the wrong one? Being able
assign different keyboard shortcuts that always did one or the other would
present less "user surprise"... possibly even distinct buttons instead of the
selection drop-down? Just a thought.

The problem with this approach is that the spot removal module "clones" the
image info from another area over the selected spot, and the appropriate area
to use for this varies from image to image.

Do you perhaps have the history stack module set to "overwrite" instead of
"append"? This happens to me if I don't remember to change it back immediately
after the rare occasions that I use "overwrite" mode...

Besides the default curve, I would also apply any desired white balance,
denoise, and lens correction (or chromatic aberrations module) to the RAW files
before exporting, since those work better on linear data, I believe.
