Bug#448601: wammu should remember last entrys phonebook type if creating multiple entrys
tags 448601 pending thanks Dne Tue, 30 Oct 2007 12:00:56 +0100 Florian Lohoff [EMAIL PROTECTED] napsal(a): in case one creates multiple phonebook entrys wammu should remember the last entrys phonebook e.g. ME or SM or whatever the phonebook is called on different phone models. It is very likely that the use either stores all entrys on the SIM (Unlikely) or the Phone - thus remembering this entry would be a real win on multiple create edits. Bug#360610: various comments
I don't propose a solution, but here are some things I think relevant to the discussion: - For the one application that I ever run in wine, installing msttcorefonts made the difference between whether that application was usable under wine or not: without msttcorefonts, most text fields just didn't show up, making the application impossible to use. If that were true of every application (a premise I suppose to be false, but I wouldn't know), and if there's no other package that can be installed to get text to show up, then Recommends or even Depends really would be appropriate, even if that meant that wine belongs in contrib: under these premises, it really would practically depend on non-free components. - If, rather, there's no other package that can be installed to get text to show up, but it affects only *most* applications, then Suggests may well be sufficient: the question is only whether enough DFSG software can be run without installing msttcorefonts that it's worthwhile having wine in the archive; how much software it can't run is irrelevant. The package description may well need to be changed accordingly, making it clear that this package only enables running this small set of software, not windows software generally. - Regarding the statement ‘Not all policy violations are serious bugs.’, some relevant Debian policy excerpts: Packages that do not conform to the guidelines denoted by _must_ (or _required_) will generally not be considered acceptable for the Debian distribution. ... These classifications are roughly equivalent to the bug severities _serious_ (for _must_ or _required_ directive violations), [other correspondances elided]. (The policy directive that this bug violates, cited above, uses `must'.) The most relevant excerpt from the http://release.debian.org/etch_rc_policy.txt file that's already been mentioned is that Recommends: lines do not count as requirements. (in the context of non-free dependencies). Of course, this file is specific to the etch release, and was cited prior to the etch release. The relevant excerpt from the http://release.debian.org/lenny-goals.txt file that's been mentioned is: * No unmet recommends relations inside main Advocate: Luk Claes Description: Packages in main should be able to satisfy all recommend relations in main. Bug-Tag: recommends State: confirmed OTOH, the file itself only describes these as goals, and doesn't explicitly say that all such bugs should be marked as severity Serious or higher. Do we have any other information as to whether such bugs should be marked as Serious or whether it suffices to have the specified Bug-Tag ? - The deduction Since Wine is all about emulating a non-free OS, it makes sense to recommend something that's an integral part of that OS, its fonts; undoubtedly, many applications Wine is trying to run will assume they're there. does not follow. Linux and the Gnu tools are all about emulating the proprietary Unix OS, but that doesn't mean that they should recommend non-free components, even components that one might consider as core to Unix as Windows' fonts are to Windows, and even if that means that many Unix applications won't run on Linux/Gnu platform. What's important is is what software does run, not what software doesn't run. - If the proposition Anyone willing to run Wine in the first place is unlikely to be against installing anything from contrib or the stronger proposition everyone who runs wine is as willing to install anything from contrib as they are software from main were true, then it may well support putting wine in contrib, but it wouldn't be sufficient to support allowing wine in main to recommend or depend on software in contrib or non-free. That would require propositions about the definition or purpose of the main/contrib distinction. As for whether the above propositions are true, it is relevant to note that wine isn't exlusively for running non-Free software, just as computers generally aren't exclusively for running non-Free software, even if the majority of software or the majority of Windows software were non-Free. A search on sourceforge reveals a number of Free software packages that are written against the Windows API. - Unfortunately there appears not to have been any news re the liberation fonts. Does anyone know how to allow software to be usable without installing either msttcorefonts or the liberation fonts, such as by using the ttf-freefont and ttf-bitstream-vera packages already mentioned (or ttf-dejavu) ? pjrm. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of

Bug#446312: Does not seem to work very well
I re-installed debian sid yesterday. Based on the xserver-xorg package documentation I choosed to intall : sudo aptitude install xserver-xorg xserver-xorg-input-kbd xserver-xorg-input-mouse xserver-xorg-video-ati I only have a keyboard, a mouse and an ATI video card. I was assuming that naming the specific input and video packages would trigger the presence of the xserver-xorg-input-2 and xserver-xorg-video-2, thus avoiding to install xserver-xorg-input-all and xserver-xorg-video-all. It does not work, I have the *-all package installed. I tried installing only : aptitude install xserver-xorg-video-ati what happens is that it pulls xserver-xorg-core then xserver-xorg and then, of course xserver-input-all (but no xserver-video-all). So here again with a *-all. Same thing when I tried only xserver-xorg-input-kb, I ended up with video-all. Is there a way to only have the desired input and video drivers and not the undesired ones? Or is it a bug in aptitude that does not know how to interpret the presence of specific candidates for a virtual package and a choice of packages? If you think this is the case, please forward this bug report to aptitude. Maybe straight apt-get is ok but I did not try. Thanks in advance, Paul Thomas

Bug#448609: wammu: gammu should offer phone vendor/type and connection type settings instead of protocol names

Wammu should then select the correct protocol by itself. This is basically what guided configuration does, have you tried that? It should be probably a bit more advertised ... any idea? Hmm - Okay - had a quick look - very confusing. The automatic then worked although the search output in the text windows is more than confusing - I just want to know what was found, and it didnt find the bluetooth device in the first run ... Using the guided - Bluetooth - Nokia and then i get the question AT based Nokia FBUS OBEX based What Aunt Tilly does not have a clue about. I would expect some kind of Microsoft Vendor Driver selector where ony selects the Vendor and then the Type. When selecting Siemens S25 i get asked Serial or IRDA because it does not have bluetooth. When selecting Nokia 6230(i) i get Bluetooth, Serial or IRDA to select. I dont care about the protocol the mobile supports on the different communication channels - I know the phone - its in my hand and most likely i have an idea about which communication channel to use but not the protocol the device supports. BTW: For example on the Connection test screen one cant click next until the test finished. Why not make the next button grey thats its clearly not allowed to press yet. Bug#448447: zekr-quran-translations-en: [debconf_rewrite] Debconf templates and debian/control review
OK, then, I'll proceed to the next step (translation updates or new translations). Choukrane (probably awful transliteration but definitely the one and only word of Arabic I know..:-)) for your support. Better to transliterate as Shukran at least in English :) Note to self: should install the package and finally be able to read Quran...unless you guys can point me to a similar free translation in French language (in such case, I would ask my friend Mohammed Adnène Trojette to packag it). Dr. Hamidullah's translation is available if you are interested. Just add it through Tools Add Translation: http://siahe.com/zekr/resources.html As in charge of the i18n/l10n of the Debian Installer, I'm still trying to revive the Persian translation work for it, initiated in the past with Arash Bijanzadeh. Arash's brother (Yashar), is one of my colleagues at the office. He said that as Arash went to Canada, he has no longer enough free time to contribute. Mohsen.

Bug#448600: Wammu overwrites clipboard on Create Contact or Edit Contact
On Tue, Oct 30, 2007 at 09:43:53PM +0900, Michal Čihař wrote: Hi Dne Tue, 30 Oct 2007 11:58:24 +0100 Florian Lohoff [EMAIL PROTECTED] napsal(a): when double clicking on a contact and the Edit Contact dialog opens wammu overwrites the clipboard with the phonebook location number which is the first entry in the form which is selected. This also happens when using Create - Contact then the clipboard gets overwritten with a 0. This is really annoying as one edits a contact and trys to insert a number finds himself with a overwritten clipboard. This looks like wxGTK/wxPython issue to me as Wammu definitely does not touch clipboard itself. However I will look for workaround. Most likely - The first input field is automatically selected and most likely copied to the clipboard automatically. Bug#448606: wammu breaks on contact update in case number contains spaces
tags 448606 pending thanks Dne Tue, 30 Oct 2007 12:15:24 +0100 Florian Lohoff [EMAIL PROTECTED] napsal(a): in case you decide to enter a number with spaces e.g. +49 171 2280134 wammu happily accepts this via cut'n'paste but later fails to write the number to the phone dropping all entered information. Actually this is a multifold bug - I would expect wammu to allow any input and normalize the number automatically or warn if impossible and thus should silently remove spaces or maybe tell the user about a broken format. It should not fail and drop all entered information. You're right. At some point wxPython seems to changed interface to validators and I didn't notice this, so the code which was supposed to do this did exactly nothing. Fixed in SVN. As a side note there is also a editing bug hidden. When pasting a number with spaces like the above one is not able to add a single digit anymore as long as a space is contained in the number. The space is now removed from pasted number. -- Michal Čihař | http://cihar.com | http://blog.cihar.com signature.asc Description: PGP signature

Bug#448608: wammu should allow to set the default number
Hi Dne Tue, 30 Oct 2007 12:19:36 +0100 Florian Lohoff [EMAIL PROTECTED] napsal(a): on the Nokia phones most likely also others when having multiple numbers on an phonebook entry one can set a default entry in case you simply dial on the entry and not on a more specific number. I would like to be able to set this default number with wammu. How would you then allow access to dialing other numbers? I really prefer current behavior when Wammu asks which phone number you want to dial. Or you mean setting default number per contact? This will most likely not happen until some caching layer for data is implemented. -- Michal Čihař | http://cihar.com | http://blog.cihar.com signature.asc Description: PGP signature
Bug#448623: gnome programs hang when trying to show printer list and network printer is not reachable
Package: libgnomecups1.0-1 Version: 0.2.2-5 Severity: normal given one has a network printer which is currently not reachable although the ip address of that printer can be resolved (but ping printer just hangs). in that case opening evince/eog etc and trying to print will make the printer dialog and the application hang when clicking on the non-pingable but resolvable printer name. this is especially bad as e.g. evince remembers the last used printer which will immediately cause it to hang. I used gdb to attach to evince when it hangs and obtained the following backtrace. Here the printer name is 'moppel' running on the printhost moppel.not.reachable . Bug#429688: update on pushmi ITP
Pushmi depends on memcached to deal with locking of the repository. I'm not really comfortable with the lack of security (in this application) of the current debian version of memcached; essentially anyone on the same host has access to the daemon. Probably it is difficult to do much worse than a denial of service attach, but better to be cautious. The next upstream release of memcached (1.2.4?) should include better support for unix domain sockets, at which point I plan to move forward with the packaging of pushmi. The patch to memcached, along with some startup changes, can be found in BTS http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=446606 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Just add it through Tools Add Translation: http://siahe.com/zekr/resources.html I have made deb packages for all the translations available at the above link. Deb packages are accessible here: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=128414 But the exact license statuses of some of them are not clear enough (yet). When we find them out, we will begin preparing them for Debian repository. So, in case someone you know...or you...would be interested contributing to this work (which involves quite a lot of EN-FA transation), please let me know. This is definitely an area where I would be delighted to see some improvement as we had to temporarily deactivate Persian in Debian Installer because of the lack of maintenance of the translation. Bug#448600: SpinCtrl problem
retitle 448600 SpinCtrl selects text on focus what overwrites clipboard reassign 448600 python-wxgtk2.6 2.6.3.2.2-1 thanks Hi I'm reassigning this to wxPython as problem lies definitely somewhere inside wxPython/wxWidgets. wx.SpinCtrl (I have not verified whether non Python version behaves same) selects whole content on gaining focus. On X11 systems this usually leads to overwriting clipboard, what is somewhat annoying and not consistent with other controls. This behavior can be reproduced by starting SpinCtrl.py from wx2.6-examples - upon startup it overwrites whatever you had in clipboard by 5 what is default value of SpinCtrl used there. By clipboard I mean passive selection (the thing which is usually pasted by pressing middle mouse button). -- Michal Čihař | http://cihar.com | http://blog.cihar.com signature.asc Description: PGP signature

Package: apt Version: 0.7.8 Severity: wishlist pkgCache::Priority() looks up the localized string corresponding to a priority level. Yet, because this is declared as a dynamic member of the package cache, code that needs to manipulate priorities has to have a pointer to an initialized copy of the package cache. It would be better if this were not the case. While this seems like it should ideally move to one of apt's global information classes, say maybe pkgSystem, I would be happy to just have it turn into a static method. To fix this bug properly would require the lm-sensors project to work out some way of integrating their sensors-detect script with the kernel uevent/hotplugging system. Sounds reasonable to me. Another thing that could be done is to have the sensor applet display a message when there are no sensors found that points them to lm-sensors to configure things. Also, if libsensors doesn't automatically inform sensor-applet that the available sensors have been updated, a refresh button (and matching docs) would work. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#448633: RFP: vrr -- vector image editor with tex support and svg/pdf output
Package: wnpp Severity: wishlist * Package name: vrr Version : 0.9.4 Upstream Author : VRR developers [EMAIL PROTECTED] * URL : http://atrey.karlin.mff.cuni.cz/projekty/vrr/ * License : GPL Programming Lang: C Description : vector image editor with tex support and svg/pdf output VRR (a Vector-based gRaphic editoR) is an application designed especially for creating illustrations of mathematical articles. VRR has a simple but powerful operation set: creating, manipulating and transforming basic graphic primitives, which are points, segments, rational Bézier curves, elliptic arcs etc. All objects can be determined not only by absolute coordinates, but also by geometric dependencies on other objects - intersections, significant points, other curves etc. When an object is changed, the dependent objects are recalculated automatically. This enables you to modify the image easily without breaking the lines visually tied together. VRR has a sophisticated system for working with text. In addition to common text objects, it allows you to create text objects typeset by TeX and make them part of your image. You can create almost anything from a short math expression to several paragraphs of a text. The editor is able to import from and export to files in common data formats (export to PDF, PS, EPS and SVG, import from IPE5 and SVG). VRR is a freely available open source program, which runs on Linux and uses a graphical user interface based on the X Window System and GTK. The authors suppose that the time spent by a user exploring VRR's interface will bring him much joy later when he is able to use all of its powerful advanced features. The editor can be also easily extended by a plugin or by a program written in its built-in scripting language, Scheme. If you have any suggestions or bug reports, you can contact the VRR Team on [EMAIL PROTECTED] For new release versions of VRR , documentation and many related articles, see the VRR developers' page - http://vrr.ucw.cz/. -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers stable APT policy: (500, 'stable'), (50, 'testing'), (10, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.18-4-686 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=fr_FR, LC_CTYPE=fr_FR (charmap=ISO-8859-1) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#448632: force_depends abuse
Package: dpkg Version: 1.14.7 In processarc.c: if (!depisok(dsearch,depprobwhy,0,1)) { varbufaddc(depprobwhy,0); fprintf(stderr, _(dpkg: regarding %s containing %s, pre-dependency problem:\n%s), pfilename, pkg-name, depprobwhy.buf); if (!force_depends(dsearch-list)) ohshit(_(pre-dependency problem - not installing %.250s),pkg-name); dsearch-list should only be used in this way if the dependency is only one-armed (eg, Provides, Conflicts, Breaks). In this case the result is that ignore_depends in force_depends will be called on the wrong package. This mistake was probably caused partly by the fact that force_depends is misnamed. It should probably be renamed force_deppossi. Callers who have a dependency which is (or may be) of a multi-armed type need to call force_deppossi (ie, force_depends) with the appropriate deppossi, or do the logic from force_depends themselves. The latter is a bit messy so I think we should create a new int force_dependency(int fc, struct pkginfo *up, struct pkginfo *ed) { return fc || ignore_depends(ed) || ignore_depends(up); } and call it in appropriate places. That will make the appropriate calls clear for future programmers. If this is to be done, it should be done in a git branch which is based on my bug20471 branch, to avoid spurious conflicts. Bug#420081: S2S and SSL work fine.
severity 420081 normal tags 420081 = moreinfo unreproducible thanks I've just tested this on a bare Debian 4.0 installation. Installed only jabber-1.4.3-3.3, created a self signed SSL certificate, and made the minimal changes necessary to configure the server to use the certificate and communicate with other servers. I then added my normal jabber account to the contact list of my new user on the test system. Both accounts are connected to their respective servers via SSL and I'm able to pass messages back and forth between them. Based on the above findings, I'm downgrading the severity of this report. I suspect the problem that's being experienced by some is with some other component. For those experiencing this problem, are you also running any transports? If so, which one(s)? Can you try disabling all transports and test just the core jabber server using the 1.4.3-3.3 package? -- Jamin W. Collins -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. as a member of the OpenMPI maintainer group, I'm very interested in OpenMPI support for GROMACS. Please find the attached patch to add it. It compiles fine in single and double precision modes on my maschine. Great! I'd been leaving it out because it didn't compile the last time I'd checked it (which was admittedly back on openmpi 1.0.2) and wasn't expecting to be able to add support until GROMACS 4.0. I'll be happy to add support sooner. OpenMPI does not support all architectures, so I adjusted the Arch: field of the gromacs-openmpi package. The rest should fit into your packaging scheme. I think debian/rules will require some further modification to keep it from failing when calling the build target on the architectures where OpenMPI is unavailable. It'll be a few days before I have time to look at it. Out of personal curiosity, are the remaining architectures likely to be supported by the release of lenny? Bug#448638: RFP: I2P -- I2P is an anonymizing network
Package: wnpp Severity: wishlist I2P is an anonymizing network, offering a simple layer that identity-sensitive applications can use to securely communicate. All data is wrapped with several layers of encryption, and the network is both distributed and dynamic, with no trusted parties. Anonymity is not a boolean - we are not trying to make something perfectly anonymous, but instead are working at making attacks more and more expensive to mount. I2P alone is what could be called a low latency mix network, and there are limits to the anonymity offered by such a system, but the applications on top of I2P, such as Syndie, I2P mail, and I2PSnark extend it to offer both additional functionality and protection. Hi, By the way, a suggestion for the names of packages: is it possible to change ghostscript-x to ghostscript, and rename ghostscript to ghostscript-nox? This naming policy may be more consistent with other debian packages. e.g., vim and vim-nox, emacs22 and emacs22-nox, etc. Thanks for suggestion, but the current ghostscript-x package only contains /usr/lib/ghostscript/8.61/X11.so, so I'm pretty much reluctant to call it the main ghostscript package. Bug#448635: gromacs: Please add support for OpenMPI
Am Dienstag, den 30.10.2007, 10:33 -0700 schrieb Nicholas Breen: as a member of the OpenMPI maintainer group, I'm very interested in OpenMPI support for GROMACS. I had trouble compiling GROMACS with OpenMPI for quite a while. I'm quite happy as well that it finally works. :) I think debian/rules will require some further modification to keep it from failing when calling the build target on the architectures where OpenMPI is unavailable. It'll be a few days before I have time to look at it. I didn't think about that, so I missed it. Anyway, there's no hurry. Out of personal curiosity, are the remaining architectures likely to be supported by the release of lenny? (I'm perhaps the only person that tries running GROMACS on a MIPS box occasionally, mostly to check for glaringly obvious non-i386 problems.) I don't think so. They're not supported by upstream and fail because there are no atomic primitives provided. See bugs #376833, #389306 and #405929, as well as the mailing list discussion on that. (Those are essentially the same bugs.) Upstream has no possibility to provide and test those, so we're kind of stuck until someone steps up and hacks some assembler routines. As an aside, you may have noticed that MPICH was given away for adoption. AFAIK it's removed from testing for a while now as well. This might affect the GROMCAS package in the (near?) future.
