bug al Transmission?

2013-08-04 Thread Ernest Adrogué
Hola,

Acabo de fer un apt-get upgrade i ara el Transmission falla a causa d'una
violació de segment. La versió del T és 2.81 i el binari es
transmission-gtk.

Algú pot confirmar el bug?

Salutacions.

He

gnome, kde, xfce, etc...

correo distinto, no olvides poner asunto :-).
 man lsmod

XP o 2003, no va a tener ningún problema.

http://extensions.openoffice.org/en/projectrelease/pagination-1310

En cuanto a Calc (Excel), como usuario normal, no existen problemas;

Panic: early exception 08 rip 202:10 error 811b2418 cr2

Bien.

modelo exacto), y quise ampliarlo a 8 GB.

http://www.valueram.com/datasheets/KVR1333D3S9_4G.pdf

He

 gnome, kde, xfce, etc...

correo distinto, no olvides poner asunto :-).
  man lsmod

páginas man no están totalmente traducidas.

https://www.google.co.ve/search?q=debian+handbook+espa%C3%B1ol;)...

http://lists.debian.org/debian-user-spanish/2013/08/msg00120.html

Icedove no longer allows transfer of emails between folders

2013-08-04 Thread Ken Heard

Hash: SHA1

I have Icedove 10.0.12 in a Squeeze box. Today for no reason which I
can discover -- certainly not because of any *conscious* intervention
on my part -- Icedove will no longer transfer files between folders.
To do so I normally had been using the File icon on the mail tool
bar, but it now no longer responds.

I tried to solve the problem by rebooting but with no effect. What
would cause an Icedove function suddenly no longer to respond after
having working properly since installation of the Icedove package?

Booting degraded software raid1 with failed /dev/sda

2013-08-04 Thread Tad Bak
Background.
I have Debian Wheezy 64bit installed on a machine with 2 SATA drives. On the
hard drives I have two software RAID1 partitions, md0 and md1. The bigger md1
uses LVM and has separate volumes for swap, /tmp, /var, /opt, /usr, and /home.
Everything was working fine, until one day the sda disc crashed and the system
was not bootable anymore. This is how I have learned that by default Debian
installs grub only on /dev/sda in RAID1 configuration. Despite the fact that
/dev/sdb was still fine, I had no working system, as I couldn't boot it. After
two days of Google search I have found a solution, which might be of interest
to somebody in similar situation.

Solution.
First, I downloaded the debian-live-7.0.0-amd64-rescue.iso, it fits on one
CDROM. I could boot from it into a live system. To get a root privileges I set
root pasword: sudo passwd root and then su to root. Because BIOS already
reported first HD error, cfdisk was showing me only one HD, /dev/sda (before
crash it was /dev/sdb). However, RAID1 was still alive, cat /proc/mdstat
reported two degraded partitions, md126 and md127, the first one was my former
md0 and the second the former md1. As I didn't have LVM on md0 I could mount it
directly: mount /md126 /mnt. Volumes on md1 were also fine, lvscan listed all
of them. I have mounted one by one: mount /dev/vol/usr /mnt/usr, mount
/dev/vol/var /mnt/var, mount /dev/vol/tmp /mnt/tmp. Then, in preparation for
chrooted environment I also mounted proc and dev: mount -t proc none
/mnt/proc and /mount -o bind /dev /mnt/dev. After that chroot /mnt and I
was in my installed system. Fixing grub was a matter of the command:
grub-install /dev/sda, which didn't report any errors. Ctrl-D returned me to
the live system, from which I have rebooted. Fingers crossed -- after some
delay caused by errors generated by the failed HD (which is still inside the
computer) I was finally greeted by login screen. My system is running fine now
with the degraded RAID array, waiting for the arrival of a new drive.

Cheers,
  Tad

Try turning off the hardware cursor in xorg.conf. If that doesn't

I had similar problem with Wheezy after upgrade. My cursor changes its

Re: Backup/Restore software?

2013-08-04 Thread Martin Steigerwald
Hi David,

Am Donnerstag, 11. Juli 2013, 17:42:27 schrieb David Guntner:
I've been religiously backing up my Windows machine for years with a
program called Acronis True Image. It works well, lets me backup my
system to a second hard drive in the computer, and will do a weekly full
backup and daily incremental backups, cleaning up older backup chains
 and so on.

That sounds like an image based backup for quick disaster recovery. Solutions
that may be applicable for this (untested):

- partclone

- Clonezilla

- mondorescue, I see no official Debian package for this but I think there has
been one at a time
  - see http://www.mondorescue.org/

- Relax and Recover, no Debian package, we looked at it once, sounded
promising
  - see http://relax-and-recover.org/

And more raw / low level:

- ntfsclone for Windows, I backup an old Windows 2000 installation on an
ThinkPad T23 from the Debian installed on the same disk. I was able to move it
to a different harddisk this way.

- xfscopy for XFS

- xfsdump, dump for XFS / Ext3 / Ext4

Likely there are others around.

My issue with backup software that runs on Linux is:

There are so many solutions that I can easily spend a week or more to evaluate
and compare them all. You already got a lot of suggestions for file-based
approaches.

Is there a Linux backup package that will do pretty much what I
described above? I want to be able to set it and forget it so it just
runs every night on its own and that way I have about a week or two's
worth of backups to fall back on. I need it to be able to do a full
restore in case of a disaster as well as being able to restore selected
files/directories in case of a oh why did I rm *that*? moment. :-)

I don´t use any of these. I just use, a script with stuff like:

# /home
echo Sichere \/home\...
mkdir -p $DEST/home
time rsync -a --acls --xattrs --sparse --hard-links --del --delete-excluded --
exclude-from home-exclude /home/ $DEST/home
touch $DEST/home

# /home2
echo Sichere \/home2\...
mkdir -p $DEST/home2
time rsync -a --acls --xattrs --sparse --hard-links --del /home2/ $DEST/home2
touch $DEST/home2

# /boot (Debian)
echo Sichere \/boot\...
mkdir -p $DEST/boot
time rsync -a --acls --xattrs --sparse --hard-links --del /boot/ $DEST/boot
touch $DEST/boot

# Partitionierung
echo Sichere Partitionierung...
sfdisk -d /dev/sda /root/sfdisk.dump
parted -l /root/parted-l.txt

# LVM-Metadaten
echo Sichere LVM-Metadaten...
vgcfgbackup

# / (Debian)
echo Sichere \/\...
mkdir -p $DEST/debian
time rsync -a --acls --xattrs --sparse --hard-links --del --delete-excluded --
exclude-from debian-exclude / $DEST/debian
touch $DEST/debian

Where debian-exclude is:

/dev/**
/proc/**
/sys/**
/tmp/**
/var/cache/apt/archives/*.deb
/var/tmp/**
/home/**
/media/**
/mnt/*/**

And home-exclude is just the mount point of a ecryptfs that I do not want to
be backuped in its unencrypted state :)

This doesn´t completely cut it for my KDE desktop, so I currently manually do
a:

- akonadictl stop
- halt nepomuk indexing
- end Firefox, Digikam, Amarok and other database using software

hope for the best.

I use this together with BTRFS on a 2 TB eSATA harddisk and another I think 1
TB eSATA disk at another location and

btrfs subvol snap -r merkaba merkaba-2013-08-04

;)

I can´t remember any significant data loss within last ten years or more since
using that approach. I didn´t have BTRFS initially, and didn´t have snapshots
back then, if you want those without using BTRFS, for which I recommend recent
Wheezy backport kernels or later, use rsnapshot or some other solution like
this.

In the rare care of desaster recovery I do it manually with GRML:

- partition and lvm new disk
- mount as per my layout
- rsync -aAHXS from backup disk
- bind mounts for /proc, /sys, /dev, /dev/pts
- chroot my to restore directory
- grub-install /dev/mydisk
- reboot into new system

It involves more manual steps, but I can easily reconfigure disk layout to what
I like best at the time of a restore. And I can do partially steps easily as
well. Just OS partitition gone? Redo just this one. Just /home gone? Redo just
this one.

Some of the image based tools I think can do some relayouting of disk during
restore, but I am not sure whether any solution provides this kind of
flexibility I have with my approach.

I think you can also go with a image based solution plus some of the other
suggested solutions for backuping user data. I wouldn´t feel very comfortable
to just relay on an image based solution for user data, but I just don´t
really seem to need an image based solution.

So while I understand the appeal to have everything logged, I just put in the

Of course you can do the same with git, I just use bzr due to its IMHO more

Mysterious hangs since upgrading to Wheezy

2013-08-04 Thread David Guntner
I don't know if anyone has experienced this, and I freely admit that I
don't have a lot of information to go on, so I'm not going to be *too*
surprised if nobody has any ideas. :-) However, I'm going to give it a
shot; who knows, I might get lucky. grin

Since I upgraded from Squeeze to Wheezy yesterday, I've noticed periodic
hangs, where the system seems to just be *seriously* loaded down. It
happened again this morning - it was so bad I was just about to press
the reset button to force a reboot because I thought the machine itself
was hung.

This morning, the most recent event, I was ssh'd in from my Windows box
that sits in the same room (I was feeling lazy and didn't want to move
the chair to where the Linux computer is lol), and was typing away, when
all of a sudden everything stopped. No response of any kind. I reached
over to the Linux box and pressed a key on the keyboard to bring the
monitor awake (monitor will power down, but the system itself I use as
an active mail server, etc., so it is not set to hibernate). Nothing
happened. Moved the mouse around, nothing. Was just getting ready to
push the button when some characters I had typed in the ssh session
suddenly showed up. So I waited a bit. The monitor started to come to
life. Things were quite sporadic as it came out. Freeze, do something,
etc. The monitor did eventually wake up and the system was responsive
again.

I noticed it shortly after rebooting the system yesterday after
completing the update.

Now, on my main desktop, I keep two windows always open, one running top
and the other tailing the syslog. Top was showing a load in excess of
5.00 (which I think is a bit excessive...) and was gradually going down.
The only thing of possible note that I could see in they syslog was
that dbus (I don't remember seeing those messages in squeeze, so I'm
guessing this is new and I'm wondering if it's something I actually
need, but that's a different story :-) ) had just activated a service
called org.freedesktop.PackageKit using service helper, and about 20
seconds after that was two messages saying that rsyslogd had been HUPed
(this is not during the time when logrotate runs, so I'm pretty sure it
wasn't logrotate that HUPed it).

So, anyone have any ideas based on the total lack of useful information
above? :-)

I just discovered that the upgrade thoughtfully added anacron back to
my system (I removed it from squeeze because my system is used as a
server, thus is up 24/7, thus doesn't need anacron). I note that
anacron is a suggests in the entry for cron (aptitude show cron), so
I'm guessing that apt/aptitude now installs things which are simply
suggested? If that's so, is there a way to turn that off?

It looks like logrotate did in fact run, thanks to the anacron, which
looks like it uses the default values you'd get in /etc/crontab for the
times to run things within its own configuration. Checking the syslog
files confirms that a logrotate did take place at the time the HUPed
message shows up in the log.

Man, I hope that doing log rotation is not what's causing the system to
hang so severely while it's running I'll continue to monitor the
situation, and if I get anything new, I'll post here.

Since MariaDB has become the open source replacement for MySQL, why was
MariaDB not included in the latest release? Is there any reason behind?
Since now MySQL is a part of Oracle, I believe we need to move towards
MariaDB and support it fully.

Hi
I agree with you. I don't like to wait... I don't understand myself why
Mariadb is not available in Debian. Opensuse, Fedora, Wikipedia migrated
from Mysql to Mariadb, 100% free software. I downloaded and installed
official .deb from Mariadb site. It works with Wheezy and Jessie, on my
two PC. I use it with Digikam and Amarok. Mariadb works like Mysql, same
commands. Installation keeps mysql-common and libmysqlclient18.

If you're really keen on using it Right Now instead of waiting to see if
they're going to include it as part of the Debian distribution at some
point, the nice folks at MariaDB do have a package repository for Debian
systems that you can add to your system and then you can use apt-get or
whatever to install it. Their website provides instructions on how to
do this.

Hi
About *I downloaded and installed official .deb from Mariadb site*, I
have not been clear enough, sorry : I added official Mariadb .deb
repository to download packages:

deb http://mirrors.linsrv.net/mariadb/repo/5.5/debian wheezy main
It works for Jessie too.
Greetings

Because emacs is already packaged for debian, you can use the existing

Wheezy rkhunter hidden process found

And the saga continues! :-)

In this morning's reports, I found the following notation from rkhunter:

Is this anything I need to be worried about? And how do I go about

Installing suggests is not default behaviour. A look at your system

Thanks for the info. I gave it a try:

$ apt-cache rdepends anacron
anacron
Reverse Depends:
  anacron:i386
  update-notifier
  task-laptop
  task-desktop
  popularity-contest
 |logrotate
  update-notifier-kde
  kde-config-cron
  gnumed-server
  gnome-schedule
  fiaif
  email-reminder
  cron
 |checksecurity
  bcron-run
  backup-manager

I checked a bunch of those. They all showed either requires cron and
suggests anacron, or requires cron | anacron (which we know means it
wants either - since cron was already in the system, I'm not sure if
that would have triggered an anacron install during a dist-upgrade).
Strange stuff, that. Either way, doing a purge of anacron (again
grin) got rid of it, and there were no dependency complaints when I
did it - the purge command got rid of only one package.

Well, I'll continue to keep an eye on things. It does turn out that
anacron was running the show at around the time I had my issue. Between
log rotations, other things that it does, and tripwire (whoops, forgot
to update that manually after the update, so I got a 3.2M E-Mail this
morning listing all the things it saw as changed lol), it could just be
that the system really *was* bogged down between all the heavy stuff
going on at the time. I'm not typically awake at the time that cron
runs all those things, so it will be hard to tell if future run-daily
jobs will have as strong of an impact as it might have today. But I'll
definitely be on the lookout for any additional strange system hangs

lol - Don't sugar coat it, Brian; tell us how you *really* feel about
rkhunter. :-)

I've found in the past that it does have its uses once you tune the
.conf file to filter out the things that you expect to be there
(/etc/.java, etc.).

As an example, it calls attention to new users and groups which have
been created. Now, if I installed a new package that includes those
users/groups, that's great. But if I *haven't* done something which
would create a new user or group, I'm certainly going to want to know
about it, since that could be pointing to a bigger problem...

I see that I can turn off the hidden process check, but if possible, I'd
prefer to find a way to whitelist something that's supposed to be
hidden. Of course, if the silly thing isn't going to show me what the
hidden process is, it's not as useful. :-) I'll have to look into it
further before deciding if I want to turn that off (and for the record,
it's off by default when installed; I turned it on back in the squeeze
days (and didn't get it protesting about a hidden process then) because
it seemed like a good idea - if that's no longer the case, then I'll
turn that test back off).

Interesting find for me on that one! It wasn't in the system, but is
now. From what I've read so far in the man pages and so on, it looks
like the running daemon collects the information and takes a snapshot of
what was happening every 10 minutes. If this hang happens again, I'm
not sure that this utility will catch it in the act unless things just
happen to line up Just Right. :-) But it's certainly a cool tool to
have, and I'm glad for knowing about it now.

Just to be clear: The hang happened yesterday right after I rebooted
the system after doing all the updates, only lasted for a minute at MOST
(probably was a lot shorter, but we all know that when the system hangs
for a bit, it *feels* a lot longer grin). Then again (at least, that
I observed) this morning during the time when I believe anacron was
running all the daily jobs with log rotations, other things, and
tripwire doing it's thing (generating a HUGE E-Mail since everything
changed from its last run). I'll keep an eye out and if it happens
again, I'll run the command you mention above once it comes out of the
hang to see if by any chance it caught the culprit in the act.

Sorry, I should have phrased that differently: you could copy entire
dierectories within ~/.icedove/profiles/fhvsoiufdhfgei/Mail or similar.

Also, the individual folders on disk are mbox files, maybe you can check
these for corruption? Have you tried compacting

in case it's only the index that's corrupted?

For the problem of the inbox for one of the accounts, created another
folder and by means of a filter I was able to move the three emails in
the inbox to the new folder and then delete the new folder including
the emails in it. We shall see what happens when a new email is
received in that inbox. Will I be able to open it, or will trying to
do so cause Icedove to crash.

As for compacting, it made no difference to the files in the two
folders to which I was unable to do anything except read them.

lxde and focus follow mouse... not happening

2013-08-04 Thread Harry Putnam
Summary: How to make focus follow mouse when all settings appear to be
set for focus to follow mouse but still it does not happen.

Details:
Running an lxde desktop. I'm setup for ~/.xinitrc to invoke lxde.

I dug around in the settings and found where I could set 'focus follows
mouse' so that windows 'raise' when the mouse goes over them. And I
could set the time in milliseconds for the raise to happen.

All familiar stuff... other than finding where to make the settings in
the GUI.

There are actually two places:

1) From the top panel menu item Applications/ System Tools /
preferences / openbox conifuration manager / then on the tabs
on left of window chose 'Mouse'

[x] Focus windows when the mouse pointer moves over them

[...]

[x] Raise windows when mouse pointer moves over them

Delay before focusing ... 600 Milisec
--- --- ---=--- --- ---

2) Applications / System tools / preferences / Advanced settings /
then from the list on left chose 'Windows'
   Window focus mode 'Mouse'

So I have both set as indicated, but still, even after a reboot I
don't have focus following mouse.

Open and overlap two xterms move the mouse to the one partially under
the other and it should be raised withing 600 miliseconds, which his
just a bit over 1/2 second.

NOTHING HAPPENS.

So I checked the text (xml) config file found at:
~/.config/openbox/lxde-rc.xml, and sure enough I found the setting:

(asterisks at key lines added -hp)

focus
focusNewyes/focusNew
!-- always try to focus new windows when they appear. other rules do
   apply --
*** followMouseyes/followMouse
!-- move focus to a window when you move the mouse into it --
focusLastyes/focusLast
!-- focus the last used window when changing desktops, instead of the one
under the mouse pointer. when followMouse is enabled --
underMouseno/underMouse
!-- move focus under the mouse, even when the mouse is not moving --
focusDelay600/focusDelay
!-- when followMouse is enabled, the mouse must be inside the window for
this many milliseconds (1000 = 1 sec) before moving focus to it
--
*** raiseOnFocusyes/raiseOnFocus
!-- when followMouse is enabled, and a window is given focus by moving the
mouse into it, also raise the window --
  /focus
--- --- ---=--- --- ---

Ok, so what else to do to make focus follow mouse?

Oh PS - I rebooted after making and checking all settings just to make
sure that they had all been started.

Guess I'm going to have to just dump this system and start from scratch.

Hi
I agree with you. I don't like to wait... I don't understand myself why
Mariadb is not available in Debian. Opensuse, Fedora, Wikipedia
migrated

from Mysql to Mariadb, 100% free software. I downloaded and installed
official .deb from Mariadb site. It works with Wheezy and Jessie,
on my
two PC. I use it with Digikam and Amarok. Mariadb works like Mysql,
same
