Apparently that's why it was introduced in Fedora before anybody else did. The relevance being? You want to know who needs the feature - you look on who implements it first. RedHat was first = RedHat has needed it the most. And it has nothing to do with Red Hat not having the udev net rules generator - you can look at old Fedora releases or current or old RHEL or RHEL clone releases. 'Having' - possibly. 'Using' - definitely not as of RHEL = 5. I've forgotten about RHEL 4 but RHEL 5 definitely has and uses the udev net rules generator. This is from the one RHEL5 server I have: $ /sbin/ip a l | grep ether | head -4 link/ether 02:21:28:57:47:17 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff link/ether 00:21:28:f1:54:2c brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff link/ether 00:21:28:f1:54:2c brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff link/ether 00:21:28:f1:54:30 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff $ grep 00:21:28 /etc/udev/rules.d/* | wc -l 0 $ lsb_release -rc Release:5.10 Codename: Carthage Same thing goes for every other server. Whenever net rules generator is used, or not - it doesn't leave any trace in udev rules. So the problem that the new behavior of udev solves is that cards are named according to their hardware slot/placement/... Which sometimes change these 'predictable' names after reboot. Talk about an improvement. If you replace a nic but ise the same physical slot, it'll have the same name when using the equivalent of net.ifnames=1. It'll unfortunately have the same weird name. You've forgot to add 'if udev patched by Lennart and Kay actually do whatever it'll should do'. Bugs happen, and this particular implementation is buggy. There are drawbacks to (almost) everything: the new behavior makes us have to put with weird and unfamiliar nic names. As I posted earlier, there's a kernel cmdline option to enable/disable this behavior. Which works if systemd is a pid 1 only, and isn't needed for Debian in the first place. I'm pretty sure that this kernel cmdline works with openrc on gentoo. Ok, but Gentoo features two udevs - the one which comes with systemd, and the one which was forked by Gentoo team. Just to make sure I hadn't messed up the plugin I commented-out the 'set ts=4' that I had appended to the plugin - no change in its behavior :( Frank, try this: $ locate python.vim /usr/share/vim/vim74/ftplugin/python.vim /usr/share/vim/vim74/indent/python.vim /usr/share/vim/vim74/syntax/python.vim I'd say your issue is caused by the fact that all that three scripts are loaded when you edit python files. According to vim help (see :help filetypes) the filetype plugin indent on command that you have enabled in /etc/vim/vimrc actually means the following: - vim tries to detect the type of the file that is edited (e.g. let's suppose the file type is my_file_type) - vim loads the appropriate plugin script: /usr/share/vim/vim74/ftplugin/my_file_type.vim - vim loads the appropriate indent script: /usr/share/vim/vim74/indent/my_file_type.vim Moreover, if the syntax highlighting is enabled in vim (:syntax on) then the appropriate syntax script is also loaded: /usr/share/vim/vim74/syntax/my_file_type.vim In /usr/share/vim/vim74/ftplugin/python.vim I see the following line: setlocal expandtab shiftwidth=4 softtabstop=4 tabstop=8 So, it seems that /usr/share/vim/vim74/ftplugin/python.vim is loaded last and overrides tabstop value set by other scripts. --rpr. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. These drivers enable 3D acceleration as well as eliminate the screen flickering. However, I have a limited range of screen resolutions available. I know 1680x1050 60Hz is available on my HDTV. When I try to use xrandr to add a new mode with the following commands.. xrandr --newmode 1680x1050_60.00 146.25 1680 1784 1960 2240 1050 1053 1059 1089 -hsync +vsync xrandr --addmode VGA-0 1680x1050_60.00 I get this error message: X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes) Major opcode of failed request: 154 (RANDR) Minor opcode of failed request: 18 (RRAddOutputMode) Serial number of failed request: 29 Current serial number in output stream: 30 This is apparently due to the incompatibilities between xrandr and the nvidia compiled driver. Is anyone aware of a version of nvidia driver that does work with the Geforce 6800 GT? [1]: https://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers#Version_304.88 I've found a solution!. The problem is that the HDTV [Toshiba 32BL702B] does not send any EDID information through the VGA socket. No EDID bytes were posted on the /var/log/xorg.0.log. Without the EDID data, the nvidia driver will not recognise the available resolutions and default to 640x480 or something similar. Instead of using the VGA input on the HDTV, I connected to one of the HDMI inputs using a DVI-D to HDMI cable. The computer then received the EDID data and recognised all the available resolutions.

So, time to transfer Wheezy to a new, bigger drive; something I've never done before. I've always clean installed. So, here's what I plan with a few questions. Opinions and suggestions appreciated before I take the leap. I'll be using a gparted LiveCD and rsync for the transfers. Everything done as root, of course. There are other OSes on the old drive, but I won't be transferring them. The old drive will be removed after Wheezy is transferred, static bagged and stored in a drawer just in case. 1. Partition and format new 500GB SATA III drive. No LVM, RAID or GPT. [Note i] 2. Is 'rsync -axH mount point source partition mount point destination partition' sufficient to copy ALL files with permissions, etc? 3. Move the old grub.cfg out of the new /boot/grub/. 4. Ditto for old device.map.[Note ii] 5. Shutdown, remove old drive, reboot with LiveCD. 6. Chroot to new drive / partition: chroot mount point / partition 7. Create new grub.cfg: 'grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg' 8. Install grub on new drive's MBR: 'grub-install new drive's system name, probably /dev/sda' 9. Shutdown, reboot without LiveCD. See if it took. 10. Troubleshoot, if it didn't. So, any glaring errors? Any better (read easier) ways to do this? Thanks. Patrick i. The new drive will be partitioned, thusly: / on 1st Primary; /home on Second Primary; swap on Third Primary; Primary 4 Extended for future use. ii. Read that grub-mkconfig will create a new device map on the fly, if none exists. True? Also, sometimes leaving the old one in place causes problems. True? If I need to create a new one is there a utility that does that, or do I just decipher it and make the necessary changes manually? I've never done this - wouldn't it be possible to dd-it, boot and then extend the home partition? Yes, dd will clone an entire drive (or a partition) including the filesystem, partition table, etc. So, there's no need to partition or format the new drive. Saves time. But dd also copies all the empty space on the source drive, too. So, in that respect, if all you want to do is backup (or move) data to a new location, it wastes time. cp or rsync are better for that. As to resizing a partition: One should never do that on a partition that's in use. You're asking for trouble. Even doing so on an inactive partition, backup your data first just to be safe. The reason I opted for rsync instead of dd is the source and target drives are from two different eras with different configurations, and cloning the old drive to the new had the potential of causing problems and, at the very least, reducing R/W efficiency. I won't go into the details, but suffice to say, I thought it better to partition and format the new drive first, copy over the files, edit a couple of configs, and build and install a new grub. More work? Yes. But I'll have a more efficient, faster system. B -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? And by the time it prints the list to the screen, it will almost certainly have yielded the cpu and been re-assigned. Still, C should yield more interesting results because scripts interact with the login shell (and X11?) significantly more, and in ways that become predictable -- something like ruts in a dirt road or tracks in snow, but not as self-reinforcing. If you only need to demonstrate that the kernel is distributing your process across the CPUs, doing something like your script in C may be good enough. A few years ago, the Linux kernel was so monolithic that you could be confident that, having checked which CPU you were on, you'd be on that CPU until you left the kernel. That is no longer the case, which is progress. If you need to control or be sensitive to CPU selection, you need real-time access libraries and you probably need a slightly patched and re-compiled kernel, at minimum, if not a full-on real-time version of Linux or a true real-time OS. See: man -k semaphore man -k mutex man -k spinlock etc., although the man pages assume a lot of understanding of the theory and the code itself, and do not fully explain the theory and how the theory plays out in the code. -- Joel Rees Be careful where you see conspiracy. Running arm gives the following warning: 17:27:19 [ARM_NOTICE] Arm is currently running with root permissions. When I run the above suggested command (as root), I get the following: sudo: unable to execute /usr/bin/arm: Permission denied Found the solution at the bottom of this page: https://www.torproject.org/docs/tor-relay-debian.html.en 13. You might like to use the arm relay monitor to watch your relay's activities from the command line. First, sudo apt-get install tor-arm. Second, as the user that will be running arm, run sudo adduser $USER debian-tor to add your user to the debian-tor group so it can reach Tor's controlsocket. Then log out and log back in (so your user is actually in the group), and run arm. Does anyone know if tor arm can be run locally and tunnelled (rather than remotely logging in and viewing the remote instance)? I tried but arm seems to want to still talk to a local tor instance. Samba4 - random pauses
Hi guys, I have a home storage box running Debian, accessed exclusively from a Mac running OS 10.9 (Mavericks). A few days ago, I dist-upgraded the Debian box from Wheezy to Jessie. Since then I'm having the following issue: When accessing shares - whether copying or simply browsing the folder structure, Finder would occasionaly hang (spinning beachball). This seems to take between 45 and 60 seconds before things continue normally. Nothing at all is logged, and I'm not sure if it's Samba specifically or something in the network stack in general. Samba is 4.1.4+dfsg-3, running kernel 3.12-1-amd64 on a Core 2 Quad machine. Has anyone else encountered this? thanks -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? --rpr. Nice work, rpr! This explains it - down to the differences between jessie and wheezy or squeeze. Sons of the icon :). The shell was the very first environment I worked on where you did not need to use a special naming convention or some ad hoc command to run your programs, therefore your programs (executable binaries or scripts) became system commands themselves. Indeed there may be some situation where tagging a file could be necessary. -- Paul van der Vlis Linux systeembeheer, Groningen http://www.vandervlis.nl -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-dutch-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe.
