Re: Bookworm: Weird Firefox issue
Hello, sometimes some cooperative sites had similar problems e.g MS's O365 or Oracle's support site. In these cases removing stored cookies and website data helped. In addition cache can be deactivated in FF Developer Console (Ctrl-Shift-k) in the tab "Network(ing)". Here you have a checkbox for deactivating the cache in the top row of the tab. Then check FF's privacy protection for blocked trackers. Re: XFCE4 without panels
XFCE4 panel ca be manually recreated by (as far as I remember) right-clicking into empty desktop space and then opening settings. Other option is mentioned here: https://docs.xfce.org/xfce/xfce4-panel/getting-started: Quote: "The panel will usually be started automatically as part of your Xfce session when you start the Xfce Desktop Environment. To manually start the panel, you can run xfce4-panel in a terminal." After starting the new panel you should able to add items and these should appear the next time you start XFCE desktop. ti 3. lokak. 2023 klo 6.30 Mike Castle (dalgoda+deb...@gmail.com) kirjoitti: > I just tried this in a VM and it seemed to work. > > >From a command line: > xfce4-panel -q > find ~/.config | grep panel > > Remove the xfce4-panel.xml (I also removed the empty directory just > named panel.) > > The lack of panels seems to have survived a reboot. > > I don't know if it is sufficient for every variation involving saving > session state or what not. Re: no JAVA_HOME in the path
Hello, here is some clarification of the relationship between JAVA_HOME and the PATH. JAVA_HOME points to the base directory of a Java JRE or JDK (=development) directory. Under $JAVA_HOME one should find a bin directory which contains java, javac and other binaries. In the case you just need the wanted java or javac in the execution path actually JAVA_HOME is not needed. Simple hello-world like compilations from command line work ok when java(c) is in path. Java based tools make typically use of JAVA_HOME and some of them refuse to start unless JAVA_HOME is set to a valid location. E.g. Maven even prefers JAVA_HOME over the version of javac that is in the execution path: $ $ echo $JAVA_HOME /usr/lib/jvm/java-11-openjdk $ mvn -v Apache Maven 3.6.1 (d66c9c0b3152b2e69ee9bac180bb8fcc8e6af555; 2019-04-04T22:00:29+03:00) Maven home: /opt/maven/apache-maven-3.6.1 Java version: 11.0.16.1, vendor: Red Hat, Inc., runtime: /usr/lib/jvm/java-11-openjdk-11.0.16.1.1-1.fc36.x86_64 Default locale: en, platform encoding: UTF-8 OS name: "linux", version: "5.19.10-200.fc36.x86_64", arch: "amd64", family: "unix" but $ java -version openjdk version "17.0.4.1" 2022-08-12 OpenJDK Runtime Environment (Red_Hat-17.0.4.1.1-1.fc36) (build 17.0.4.1+1) OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (Red_Hat-17.0.4.1.1-1.fc36) (build 17.0.4.1+1, mixed mode, sharing) BR, Roland On 8/27/22 05:06, Amn wrote: Thanks! On the other hand the OP did not mentioned mail as a requirement, and in my own case I was not even thinking about receiving the output of the scheduler by mail. For years I was working with cron (/etc/cron.d/*) and crontab and the usage of mail was exclusively a kind-of convenient mean to get instance feedback during the development phase. When the cron entry worked the first line in every cron file under /etc/cron.d/ was MAILTO="". Needed production logs were by some mean put to files by redirection or the cron job called "normal" binaries or scripts that again had some kind of logging. Using systemd scheduler instant check during development is for my needs sufficiently covered by 'systemctl status' or journalctl. Best Regards, Roland

Re: colors messed up after X screen lock (buster with xfce)
I found at least a workaround: I installed and use xscreensaver for locking the screen. Unlike light-locker that xfce uses by default, xscreensaver doesn't seem to mess with the colormap. I should add: I am using nominally the same installation of debian 10 on two computers with very different hardware, a desktop and a laptop. Only the desktop computer is giving me the problems described earlier in this thread. Roland

I "only" need to logout and login (still annoying), but a reboot is not required. The whole thing reminds me of old days when some X applications would use what was called (if I remember correctly) a "private colormap". Then colors were fine for the application using the private colormap. But colors for anything else visible on this screen were messed up. Yet this problem generally existed only while the application was running that used the private colormap. Terminating the application brought things back to normal. I cannot remember how many years ago I last encountered the private-colormap problem. Here it looks as if the X screen lock used a private colormap that screws up things after unlocking the screen. If I go back to a locked screen, I get back normal colors. (This game can be repeated multiple times, as if the X screen lock was holding on to the private colormap till I logout. - I am using the default xfce screen lock.) > The only fix I've been able to find is to reinstall my Debian. I have not yet tested a reinstallation. And right now I do not see a justification for this either (except for possibly trying a different version of debian). I am new to the debian ecosystem. Is there possibly another mailing list (say, for xfce) that may be better suited for discussing this? Or should I file a bug report (against which package)? Thanks, Roland

local dns caching on a webserver
Hello, I have a very busy webserver running apache2 checking /proc/net/ip_conntrack and filtering port 53 i noticed that i have around 50 000 dns query in under 200 second. destinations are by order:- memcache cluster- database- external web services I can't add these in my /etc/hosts file as they're all load balanced and each time our dns responds with a different IP so i'm thinking of caching these with dnsmasq or something similar. Any cons of such an idea? any dnsmasq alternative ? i know on ubuntu there's "dnscache" though there are certain limitations on that front. PS: using dig, i noticed that every query takes around 3 ms to the data centers nameserver.

Dear all, on boot, the system falls back into "INITRAMFS" , something to do with the failed iscsi disks and if i don't type anything,a log starts showing containing "SYNC_DISK..." among other things.. if i hit enter, it stops and i get back to the INITRAMFS prompt. support technicians in a remote collocated DC couldn't get my server back up and running from a degraded raid so they plugged in a new drive and installed debian over it (twice) if they physically unplug all the old drives, the new debian installation boots up normally. i rebooted into a live cd and made sure that nothing in fstab points to the old disks, though on boot i keep on seeing hdio_get_identity failed for dev/sdXtiming outdropping to shell and by X i mean all 10 drives. after a lot of troubleshooting, i came across this interesting script http://bootinfoscript.sourceforge.net/and after executing it on that server in a ubuntu livecd i get very interesting details, this is the header though you could find the full details in this pastebin url: http://pastebin.com/GLgUH7ig = Boot Info Summary: === => No boot loader is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdd. => No known boot loader is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdf. => No known boot loader is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdg. => No known boot loader is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdh. => Grub2 (v1.99) is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdi and looks at sector 34 of the same hard drive for core.img. core.img is at this location and looks for (mduuid/345c489c63e34d58c1c1a2ac8ff8a6b6)/grub on this drive. => Grub2 (v1.99) is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdj and looks at sector 34 of the same hard drive for core.img. core.img is at this location and looks for (mduuid/345c489c63e34d58c1c1a2ac8ff8a6b6)/grub on this drive. => Grub2 (v1.99) is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdl and looks at sector 34 of the same hard drive for core.img. core.img is at this location and looks for (,gpt2)/grub on this drive.
ecryptfs being unmounted while user is still logged in
Hi, lately I'm having problems with my ecryptfs home directory, which is being unmounted while I'm still logged in and working on my machine. It seems to be unmounted at around 0:00 every night, which has the effect that some of my running applications stop working until I mount it again using ecryptfs-mount-private, but even then, not all applications work flawlessly (e.g. my awesome window manager won't spawn new urxvts, manually started terminals show "(unreachable)" as current directory). Unfortunately, I cannot find anything related in /var/log/*, but I have the feeling that it has to do with my recent switch to systemd-sysv. Is there maybe a daemon in userspace, which I forgot to start, that keeps track of running logins or something? What can I do to debug this? prepend localdns to resolv.conf - keeps changing
All, I installed dnsmasq on a production web server to improve caching (we tend to resolve alot of domains while serving pages) my problem is that we have to use dhcp with the server, so cannot use static ips.with that in mind, the dhcpd client keeps overriding my resolv.conf i can't lock the file as the dns provided by the dhcp service may change (i don't have control over it) so what i need is the following; nameserver 127.0.0.1nameserver (ip provided by the dhcp service) i tried setting dhcpd-eth0.conf and using a prepend record , that didn't work. tried installing resolvconf and added "nameserver 127.0.0.1" in /etc/resolvconf/head though that overrides the resolv.conf completely and removes the one provided by the dhcpd service at the moment i have cron job at reboot that accomplishes that for me, but it's not an optimal solution. Any suggestion?

The question I'm asking is, what would be the simplest way(if it is possible) to "clone" my existing installation onto the new ssd. Knowing that the root and the home are on two different partition of my hdd which are the only partition on my disk beside the swap. Howewer the ssd is smaller than the disk and the home partition will need to be resized. I also consider slightly increasing the root partition size as it is quitte full (77%) after running "apt-get clean". Since I am at it, I would also like to know if it is possible to remove the swap as it is bad for ssd life to write and rewrite, and I have plenty (8 giga) of ram. Cheers Fabrice Yes you can clone it easily with rsync. Create the partitions and filesystems on the new SSD, via gparted or fdisk, mke2fs or whatever. Then use rsync to clone the filesystems onto the new SDD partitions/filesystems. Lets say the original HDD is layed out like below as an example, and partitions, filesystems have been created, Boot up a LiveCD such as SystemRescueCD on a comp with both drives connected. Make mount points for partitions to be cloned and mount them all. HDD sda1 swap sda2 / sda3 /home SSD sdb2 swap sdb2 / sda3 /home >From Root Terminal run: rsync -av --delete /mnt/sda2/ /mnt/sdb2;rsync -av --delete /mnt/sda2/ /mnt/sdb2 Above line should read: rsync -av --delete /mnt/sda2/ /mnt/sdb2;rsync -av --delete /mnt/sda3/ /mnt/sdb3 to clone the whole system you should not forget hardlinks (-H), and may be also ACL (-A) or extended attributes (-X) should be preserved. -a, --archive archive mode; equals -rlptgoD (no -H,-A,-X) When the cloned disk is updated several times, also option -u (=update only if needed) can be used. # rsync -avuHAX --delete /mnt/sda2/ /mnt/sdb2 there's another useful option of rsync: -x causes the synchronization to restrict the operation to a single filesystem. I.e. if there are other mounts under the source disk they will not be copied in case -x is added to the rsync command: # rsync -avuHAXx --delete /mnt/sda2/ /mnt/sdb2 E.g. to clone the root of the currently running system, omitting /proc etc.: # rsync -avuHAXx --delete / /mnt/yet_another_root_disk BR, Roland This clones the two filesytems on the HDD to new SSD (since there is nothing on the new filesystem the --delete option is redundant so could be ignored) Then you would want to install Grub. Chroot into the / filesystem on SSD (sdb2 in this example) mount --bind /proc /mnt/sdb2/proc mount --bind /sys /mnt/sdb2/sys mount --bind /run /mnt/sdb2/run mount --bind /dev /mnt/sdb2/dev mount --bind /dev/pts /mnt/sdb2/dev/pts chroot /mnt/sdb2 /bin/bash grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/sdb2 /dev/sdb grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg update-initramfs -uk $(uname -r) exit chroot Then you will need to edit your fstab file, to reflect changes if any, especially if using UUID's. RE: dumb question about blu ray drive configuration and playing blu ray movies etc....
ad that MPlayer, VideoLan and Xine can understand MKV format containers. In summary I would say the following: Playing Commercial DVDs in Linux seems to be relatively pain-free. Many players can understand the whole DVD structure and/or individual files within. However I have read that a newer type of encryption is appearing on DVDs, but I haven't seen it personally. Playing Commercial Blu-Rays in Linux seems to be a hit-and-miss challenge. The encryption keeps changing so what works with the Blu-Ray you buy today might not work with the Blu-Ray you buy tomorrow. I don't know of any Linux player that can understand the whole Blu-Ray structure and it is possible that split-playlists might defeat Linux players. There was even some talk online of key-revocation which might mean that your Blu-Ray player might stop playing a Blu-Ray that it played previously. It might be worth sticking with DVDs until Blu-Rays are playable on Linux without any hassle. I hope that this helps. With this new card, I got full-speed downloads and no packet loss using the kernel driver 3c95x. I then noticed that my Motherboard was one version down on the BIOS updates available and that the BIOS update mentioned the LAN. So I updated my Motherboard's BIOS and removed the 3COM card. I now seem to be getting full-speed downloads and no packet loss using the kernel driver r8169. For reference, my Motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-880GM-UD2H Revision 1.3 and the on-board Ethernet is an RTL8111D. Thanks for all your help and suggestions. RE: PPTP Issues in Debian Testing/Squeeze
Hello Russell, Thank you for your reply, I have got the old firewall running (possibly briefly - I think the HD is nearly dead). It still gets full speed on my Internet connection. I do get 2 log messages in syslog, they are a pair: Dec 27 16:25:26 OLD pptp[4373]: anon log[ctrlp_rep:pptp_ctrl.c:243]: Sent control packet type is 5 'Echo-Request' Dec 27 16:25:26 OLD pptp[4373]: anon log[logecho:pptp_ctrl.c:659]: Echo Reply received. I don't get any of the messages about buffering packets being lost or reordered. ICMP type 5 is Source Route failed from RFC 792 (http://www.rfc-archive.org/getrfc.php?rfc=792) I don't seem to have any type 5 control packet logs in the new syslog. I wonder if Shorewall is blocking these control packets, where the firewall in my old setup didn't? My old Debian was Debian Sarge, release 3.1. My old firewall was ipmasq. My old kernel was 2.6.8-2-686. My new Debian is Debian Testing/Squeeze. My new firewall is Shorewall (4.4.11.6). My new kernel is 2.6.32-5-amd64. PPTP Issues in Debian Testing/Squeeze
Hello, I am wondering if anyone has come across a similar issue to one I am encountering with Debian Testing/Squeeze. I have been using Debian for many years as a Firewall for my family's computers. I have a ppp interface as the Internet interface and another Ethernet / WiFi interface within my house. Originally, the ppp interface was a dial-up modem, but since the advent of broadband it became a PPTP tunnel forwarded from my ADSL modem. This had been working fine on Debian system I set up many years ago, but recently that PC died. I have built a new system and installed Debian Testing on it (because it should shortly be released as Debian Squeeze and I hoped that if I got Testing working the upgrade to Squeeze should be relatively pain-free). Unfortunately, my network speed appears to be less than 1/10th of what it was previously, even though I believe that I copied all the ppp configuration files over accurately from the old system. I put ppp into debug mode and have been looking at the logs. I get a huge number of lines in my syslog saying: Dec 27 12:51:54 x pptp[5043]: anon log[decaps_gre:pptp_gre.c:414]: buffering packet 20895 (expecting 20894, lost or reordered) (the packet numbers change). I have tried leaving the MTU unset in the ppp configuration files, and I have also tried setting it to 1416, 1454, 1492 and 1500 (which seem to be common values recommended on the Internet). I am using the Shorewall firewall with the "two-interfaces" configuration. I have set IP_FORWARDING=On and CLAMPMSS=yes in shorewall.conf. I am uncertain if the issue is with ppp, pptp, Shorewall or something else. I am also uncertain if this could be an issue with the "Testing" distribution as I have never seen anything like this with any of the previous Debian distributions I have used. I would be grateful if anyone has seen this before and could let me know what the issue could be. The -maxdepth 0 restricts the search to the current directory: rm $(find . -maxdepth 0 -type f | xargs ls -t| sed 1,2d) However, this does not work, if you have files with spaces! Then the best is to use the -print0 and xargs -0 that uses zero-delimited strings instead of space delited strings. Also the rm must be run in a loop and with quotation marks around the filename: find . -maxdepth 0 -type f -print0 | xargs -0 ls -t| sed 1,2d | while read f; do rm -f "$f" ; done BR, Roland > > > > > -- > To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org > with a subject of "unsubscribe". You cannot make XFS shrink, only grow. However, this does not prevent you from using it on LVM. You just can't make the logical volumes any smaller, only larger. Out of curiousity, why XFS? Why not ext3? XFS has some nice features for snapshotting and freezing filesystems, which is why many people often use it together with databases. Out of curiosity, many people claim that ext3 can be resized live but I seam to remember that it requires you to run e2fsck prior to doing the resizing i.e. e2fsck -f /dev/group/volume resize2fs /dev/group/volume I might be wrong on this but isn't it a requirement that e2fsck is run with the filesystem unmounted ? which is not exactly what I associate with being online. On xfs you can always use the xfs_growfs command to enlarge a fs, no matter what state it is in (except corrupted). -- Lars Roland -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". You can "forwardport" mysql4 from Sarge to Etch. That is, instead of backporting from Etch to Sarge, as is normally done, you bring the old source package from Sarge to Etch and then build it on Etch. I have written a howto on customizing Debian packages, which also applies to simply recompiling for a different release: http://people.connexer.com/~roberto/howtos/debcustomize I think that option 2 is more correct. That way you know that you are using libraries available in Etch. Regards, Thanks for all the replies I will be using the equivs solution since mysql 4 is going to have a short life on this box before getting upgraded to 5.x (about a month) . But the other solution is the best and worth considering for other stuff - I do however have one question about creating customized versions of packages already found in debian. Say I am going to role my own customized package then I do not want future debian packages to upgrade my home build one neither do i want to rename it since that might break other dependencies - do people in these cases use the Provides feature in the control file or is it possible to block package upgrades by specifying its maintainer or something similar in /etc/apt/preferences or must I use the Pin-Priority trick along with the full package version: Package: mysql-client Pin: version 4.0.23-1 Pin-Priority: 1001 -- Lars Roland -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Dependency Injection
Hi all I need to get mysql 4 running on a debian etch box, mysql 4.1 and 5 will not do. If I try to grab mysql 4 from sarge I run into the problem that mysql-client depends on libreadline4 and I already have readline-common installed which blocks libreeadline4. Uninstalling readline-common is not and options since core software depends on it, so what I am looking for is a way to tell apt that readline-common provides libreadline4 so mysql-client can be installed. So basically is there a way to tell apt that a needed package is already installed even though one already on the system blocks this package ? Size difference between file systems
Hi I have been moving some data from a Reiserfs partition to a XFS volume on LVM, during this process I discovered that 8.9GB of data on the reiser partition turns into 12Gb of data on the XFS volume (I got those numbers using "df -h"). The XFS volume was created during the Debian Etch installation and the reiserfs volume by and earlier redhat install on the same box. Initially I suspected that "df" was just out of sync so I did a "du" and got the same numbers back. This is not really a problem for me but I just wonder why XFS/LVM needs so much more space ?. I know LVM has a minor overhead but I have never heard of 3GB difference on 8.9 gb data -- Lars -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Given that I then achieve redundancy on server level and that each server contains 4 disks, I am in the mood for deploying software stripe across these 4 disks for maximum throughput. Before doing so I am however a little unsure of the stability of software stripe, I am of cause aware of the fact that loosing a disk will mean loosing the entire stripe set but given I have a replicata this is not my main specultaion, what I want to know is if software stripe is stable or if it have some insane problems (I remember in kernel 2.4 days where a power failure could take down a software mirror set - so if this can happen to a RAID 1 then I am a bit afraid of what might happen to a RAID 0). Another thought is on the ease of rescuing a OS on a software stripe (i.e. if I somehow mess up my kernel or some other key software) - on a normal hardware raid/disk I can just boot using Knoppix and fix whatever problems I might have created - is such operations extremely difficult/impossible on a software stripe ?. Another solution would be to place the OS on 1 disk and then stripe the remaining 3 disks and link the remaining storage on disk 1 together with the stripe on disk 2, 3, and 4 using LVM - this way I can boot into the OS using normal forensic tools and still achieve greater throughput than just chaining the 4 disks together using LVM (as in without the software stripe). Thanks... Well I am not a Solaris fan boy but I have worked with Unix for 10+ years (Solaris, AIX, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, Tru64 Unix and Linux) and there is no doubt that Solaris is one of the better ones. It is very tightly crafted (i.e. a limited choice of software that does what it is supposed to do), very secure and just plain works. I personally would still any day use Debian on a Server (except for Woody, Debian has a very good track record in the server field) and Gentoo on my development laptop/workstation. But there should be no doubt that technologies like zFS (http://www.sun.com/2004-0914/feature/), Zones (http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/content/zones/) and dtrace (http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/content/dtrace/) gives Solaris a Edge. Note that all of the above technologies have equal sisters in the OSS world, but I suspect that one of the things that makes the enterprise (and partly myself) fell in love with Solaris is that these products comes in one neatly installable and maintainable package. But as I said if you know what you are doing then it is a no brainer to get the OOS equalities to do the same stuff in Debian - that is why I have 30+ Linux servers running Debian Sarge and I have no plans to change OS on them Regards. Re upgrading glibc6, help appreciated
I have solved my problem... I forgot to mention that I was running a VDS on UML - I have been informed that the stuff in /lib/tls does not work under uml, and as a result the immutable attribute had been set on the directory - stopping me from chmoding it. To solve it (if anyone else has a similar problem) do: chattr -i /lib/tls apt-get upgrade rm /lib/tls/*
Problem upgrading glibc, help appreciated
This might be quite a basic question. I've Just done apt-get upgrade, and there seems to be a problem with installing libc6. Screen rotation
--- Erhalten von SYSUEXT.UE05588 0512 20 49 56 23.06.05 09.05 Hi I need to rotate the screen by 180 degrees on a i386 maschine installed with sarge. The graphic card and the driver does not support rotation. By googeling around I have found out that there is this xrandr extension to X which supports screen rotation without the need of hardware or driver support. But there is almost no information on how to do it. So the question is: What software (inkl. version numbers) do I have to install and how does it have to be configured to make screen rotation *on the fly* possible? On my old Redhat system my Broadcom tg3 Ethernet card was running 100mbit with a tx queue length of 100. On kernel 2.6.8.1 it was running 1000Mbit with tx queue length of 1000. Setting the length to 100 again using: ifconfig eth0 txqueuelen 100 Made the load drop immediately and also harddisk performance improved: eg. txgueue length: 1000 hdparm -t /dev/sda /dev/sda: Timing buffered disk reads: 12 MB in 3.40 seconds = 3.53 MB/sec and txgueue length: 100 hdparm -t /dev/sda /dev/sda: Timing buffered disk reads: 152 MB in 3.40 seconds = 44.74 MB/sec So now the load looks ok, still the old Redhat is holding its head above but now it is only with 10%. This may be due to further bugs in the tg3 driver that hopefully a new kernel will fix - if not then I must fill a bug report and send it to the driver developers, it can not be intently that there driver messes up system performance that much because of its default queue length. Uhh I did indead mess up the statistics but unfortunatly this meesseup did not do me any god. 1) Spam scanning is about 18% faster than the old Redhat system. 2) Perl handling of the email is about 12% faster. 3) ClamAv is scanning 8% faster. I have doubled checked these numbers and they are true (perhaps Perl 5.8 is much faster than the old version 5.6 on Redhat) - note that most people has performance problems with spamassassin because they have crappy DNS perfoamnce, I use a dedicated DNS server as a DNS cache (djbdns cache) to achive high performance. Sarge Performance
Hi all I just replaced my company anti-virus/anti-spam mail gateway from a Redhat 7.3 with kernel 2.4.24 to Debian Sarge with kernel 2.6.8.1. I had hoped that this transition would lead to better performance (new perl, better drivers in the kernel and so on) but the performance has instead drooped about 30%. Here is my setup. Hardware: IBM 335 with dual 2.4 Ghz Xeon, 1GB Ram and 1 10.000RPM SCSI disk. Software: Minimal Debian Sarge (that is I have turned all unnecessary services off). Kernel 2.6.8.1-SMP. Reiserfs on all file systems. Qmail MTA configured with up to 70 incoming connections. ClamAV running as a daemon. 10 Spamassassin daemons (spamd) Qmail-scanner. On my old Redhat systems the hardware could scan around 60.000 emails pr. hour with an average scan time of 5.6 seconds (including time from both ClamAV and Spamassassin) and average load of 23.7. My new Sarge installation on the same hardware scans 40.000 emails pr hour with an average scan time of 4.8 but with a load average of 57.8. Interestingly if i time the internal handling of the email then Sarge seams to win. 1) Unpacking the email with Ripmime is about 5% faster than the old Redhat system. 2) Spam scanning the email is about 10% faster than the old Redhat system. 3) Perl handling of the email is about 2% faster. 4) ClamAv is scanning 4% faster. (the above numbers is the average taken from 4 days of mail flow (about 3.9 million emails)) This fact leads me to think that the system cannot handle as many emails as before because it simply does not handle enough connections (eg. the connections time out on the SMTP port before even getting to the scanners) - To persue this idea I have tried the folowing 1) Change the file system to XFS, EXT3. 2) Running Reisefs with notail, nodiratime and noatime 3) Renice qmail-smtpd so it gets higher priority than spamd (hoping that this would lead to more connections getting handled). 4) Change the I/O scheduler to deadline (elevator=deadline). 5) Changed the kernel to 2.4. 6) Turning the firewall (iptables) completely off. Non of it has worked. And yes I do get 60.000 incoming connections pr. hour most of them just seams to time out an get handled by the next MX in my DNS. To see if the server could take the load on its own I have tried changing my MX to only contain this one server. This made the load jump to 98.9 and then the server eventually died with around 55 defunct perl process's floating around - my old Rehat server could handle being the only mail server just fine (with loadavg around 28.5). So as it is now I am a bit baffled by the slowness of Sarge, because all the other systems I have converted to Sarge and kernel 2.6 have run significantly faster (Database servers, web servers, name servers...). So my question is this, does anyone know of any limitation in Sarge (default values of incoming connections (not that I have ever heard of such a thing)) that would cause my system to degrade in a way that it has. When I do a telnet to port 25 I simply do not get a connection fast enough (most of them times out) so this leads my to suspect that something is wrong. Regards. Lars Roland

Sarge works like a charm on x336 - although you will have to chose kernel 2.4 duing installation and then do apt-get install kernel-image-2.6-"put your image here" to get kernel 2.6 (this is because the 2.6 kernel on the netinst cd does not support the cdrom device in th 336 only the 2.4 kernel will allow you to boot). Silence apt-get for real
Hi all I have a repository that I use to distribute my own (and 3rd-party) packages to all my debian servers (20 servers placed around the world). I test the upgrades before putting them in my repository and then I have cron script on each of the servers that runs the following apt-get update apt-get upgrade -y --force-yes -qq this was supposed to silence apt-get completely and make it choose default values for all questions. However if I have package that contains a file and this file is changed in between updates then I get the following: -- Configuration file `/etc/qmail/tcp.smtp' ==> Modified (by you or by a script) since installation. ==> Package distributor has shipped an updated version. What would you like to do about it ? Your options are: Y or I : install the package maintainer's version N or O : keep your currently-installed version D : show the differences between the versions Z : background this process to examine the situation The default action is to keep your current version. *** tcp.smtp (Y/I/N/O/D/Z) [default=N] ? n -- How can I get rid of this warning ? - I want apt-get to be completely silent. I know that this could be dangerous - but in my case it is ok given that it is me that control the repository and that I have tested all the packages before putting them there. So to put it short how do I silence apt-get completely ?. Regards. Lars Roland

Problems installing Debian Linux 3.0r2 on a sun ultra5 (ultrassparc II)
Hi, sorry about that my last short subject line. I try it now again with a more precise subject line. I had a problem installing linux on a ultra5 with solaris 2.7 and solaris 2.8 on it. I had created the 5th partiton for linux and the 6th for the linux swap partiton (=> hda5 / for linux with ext2 and hda6 for swap). Everything went ok until the task to make the system bootable. There were 3 possibilities: 1. Make the system bootable 2. Boot floppy 3. Alternate1 Because the first possibility would overwrite my bootblock for Solaris I tried to make a boot floppy for linux but without success. I've read somewhere that could be a problem with some ultrasparc machines like ultra5/10. I thought alternate1 wouldn't change the boot behaviour but I was wrong. The Debian linux installation has overwritten my boot block for solaris. I wasn't asked if I wanted to install SILO there and I don't know a reason for installing it on an other partition than my linux partition (/dev/hda5) but it has happened somehow ... The funny thing was that with alternate1 I can't start solaris and I can't start linux. There wasn't a possibility for me not to corrupt my boot block with SILO from Debian, that should and need not be. The easiest thing would be to add a possibility which calls silo -t or silo -r /mnt -t or something like that. It was really nasty to repair the thing. Just using dd from a rescue disk and deleting the first sector like: # make a backup of the boot sector dd if=/dev/hda1 of=boot_512.sonne bs=512 count=1 # clean the boot sector dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda1 bs=512 count=1 doesn't work. The first sector just contain the disk lable and partition information. The boot block on sparc machines are the next 15 sectors or something like that. The only possibility for me was to start the solaris installation cd. During the installation process Openwin is started and there I got a shell to run installboot /usr/platform/`uname -i`/lib/fs/ufs/bootblk /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s0 With silo -t I had managed it to be able to get SILO just to my linux partition and boot it with boot disk:e I've read that there should be soon a new GNU Debian version and it would be great if there's an easy possiblity to install with -t option. OpenBoot is really an easy and nice possibility to boot several operating systems, so just booting into SILO isn't nice in every case especially if solaris or bsd is used, too. GNU Debian is a really nice linux but it would be even nicer if the installation process of silo or maybe grub let the user the possibility to still use OpenBoot for the other operating systems. I hope the description of my problems can help other people to solve them without having much trouble installing linux parallel to sparc solaris. Maybe there's a better solution in the new soon coming Debian Linux and maybe there are other better solution of installing Debian on sparc but I try a short abstract: At the boot loader installation just select Make system bootable => the boot block of solaris can be overwritten but this isn't problematic if you have the solaris installation CDs. After completing the linux installation run silo -t Then boot the solaris CDs and run e.g. installboot /usr/platform/`uname -i`/lib/fs/ufs/bootblk /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s0 for installing the solaris boo block on the first partition on an ide disk. Installing netatalk on Debian (Woody)
Hi, Anyone had any experience of installing netatalk on Debian (Woody)? I have read that it requires a kernel recompile but wondered whether this is truly the case? Is it not possibly as simple as apt-get netatalk? I've installed the idepci version of DEBIAN (Woody) - anyone know if netatalk installed in any of the other ver's? E.g. vanilla, or bf24? Incidentally, where can one find the list of packages that one can supply to apt-get as parameter? netatalk might not be the correct package name, but I'm unsure how to find out what is the correct name. That's /etc/init.d/blah That "2." above ought to be: - insert "echo blah startup disabled in /etc/init.d/blah" - insert "exit 0" in /etc/init.d/blah I am not an inittab power user. I use multi-user and single-user exclusively. I don't need a non-X multi-user, and I doubt many others do either. I think that's reflected in how Linux & Debian has been shipping for years. If you do, then you ordinarily know what to do. > I think this is better for several reasons. It preserves init.d/gdm > in case he wants to start|stop|restart gdm from the command line, it > allows for running gdm in a different runlevel, and it doesn't depend > on init.d/gdm running at all when booting in to runlevel 2. In > addition, it is consistent with the way System V init is commonly > used, and documented. > > 'mv /etc/rc2.d/Snngdm /etc/rc2.d/Knngdm', as root. I don't like that for myself for the simple reason that I have a lot of /etc/rcN.d/, and I don't want to have to try to keep track of them all. I much prefer being able to (eg.): head -2 /etc/init.d/* | grep "exit 0" or something (better: use that echo above and watch boot messages). RE: NIS Client Problem
Hi Alexis, Thanks - in the end it was my own stupidity. The NIS server is an old RedHat machine, I forgot to edit /etc/hosts.allow to include the new server. One thing though - the root password for my new (DEBIAN) server is the local root password - how can I tell the new server to take its' root pwd from NIS rather than use the local password? Stopping GNOME Launching on Reboot
Hi, Having typed: "update-alternatives --config x-session-manager" and choosen GNOME, GNOME now starts up on reboot. I'd like it not to so that I can type "startx" when I want it to go into GNOME. How can I force it not to launch GNOME on reboot? Cheers Roland. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks to everyone for all their help. What fixed it in the end was: "update-alternatives --config x-session-manager" and choosing GNOME. You can do this by creating a file in your home directory named ".xinitrc" and put a single line in it with the name of a different wm, such as "icewm" or "fluxbox" (make sure to "apt-get install icewm fluxbox" first). Then run "startx". If that gets you a GUI, then you know the problem is KDE-related rather than X-related. >But this didn't work either. BTW, "gdm" is a "session manager", or "login manager", rather than a "window manager". The "window manager" would be what puts the frames and corner buttons, etc around the various windows that show up on your GUI, and would be such things as icewm, fluxbox, twm, sawmill/fish, and xfce. KDE and Gnome are "Desktop Environments", which are more than window managers, but which typically include (or work with) a window manager. You can configure which session manager to run with "dpkg-reconfigure gdm" or "dpkg-reconfigure xdm", etc, depending on which wm's you have installed. Or you can play with the symlink at /etc/alternatives/x-session-manager, but it'd probably be better to run "update-alternatives --config x-session-manager". To configure the default wm, you can play with the symlink at /etc/alternatives/x-window-manager, but if you do that, it'd probably be better to run "update-alternatives --config x-window-manager" >So, any ideas as to either how to fix this or where to look would be *very >very* welcome. >Thanks, Roland. > > > -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Newbie question: moving from RedHat to Debian
Hello, Wonder if anyone can help. I've just moved from RedHat to Debian and have a couple of queries: - Anyone know of any sites that try to make such moves simple for users - that list some of the common differences between Debian and RedHat? - On RedHat /etc/rc.d/init.d/ was where you could find scripts to start/stop apache, samba, etc where is this on Debian? - Also on RedHat you could use chkconfig to setup such a script to restart on reboot - is there an equivalent for Debian? Apologies for the newbie questions, Thanks, Roland. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Debian (Woody) Problem With startx
Hi, I've just installed DEBIAN (Woody) on my machine. When I run startx to launch X, it seems to launch X, I see the cross mouse cursor, (I can move the mouse cursor) the KDE screen pops up, goes through the first couple of icons on the startup screen (looks like a nucleus and electrons type icon, then a cog icon), then flashes the keyboard/mouse icon, then goes back to standard console screen. The logfile at: /var/log/XFree86.0.log shows: (**) Configured Mouse: Protocol: "PS/2" (**) Option "SendCoreEvents" (**) Configured Mouse: always reports core events (**) Option "CorePointer" (**) Configured Mouse: Core Pointer (**) Option "Device" "/dev/psaux" (==) Configured Mouse: Buttons: 3 (**) Option "Emulate3Buttons" "true" (**) Configured Mouse: Emulate3Buttons, Emulate3Timeout: 50 (**) Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" (**) Configured Mouse: ZAxisMapping: buttons 4 and 5 (II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Configured Mouse" (type: MOUSE) Fatal server error: Caught signal 4. Things seem to point to the fact that it fails on the mouse/keyboard, but the error log isn't particularly helpful really. Any ideas anyone? What is particularly strange is that if I run XFree86 instead of startx, I get the standard X screen (not KDE), and I can control the mouse fine. So perhaps it isn't the mouse that is the problem. The other thing that's a bit wierd is that I was sure during install I chose gdm to be my default window manager - where is this set? Where is X told which manager to use? So, any ideas as to either how to fix this or where to look would be *very very* welcome. Thanks, Roland. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? freeamp cannot open audio device, but aplay works fine
Strange problem: Freeamp (zinf) says "cannot open audio device", but aplay (included with alsa-tools) plays soundfiles just fine. I am running linux-2.6.0, Freeamp 2.1.1, aplay 0.9.6. Unfortunately, aplay can play .wav but not .mp3/.ogg files, so I need freeamp. But freeamp (www.zinf.org) does not include any documentation. My /dev/dsp is present, but perhaps freeamp needs another device. I would be grateful for information on configuring freeamp.
