Re: [Declude.JunkMail] Thoughts for future features

2002-05-20 Thread R. Scott Perry

We have had some customers ask for the capability to accept only from the
people in their address book (They use only Webmail). Alternatively, I
have been toying with the idea of implementing the Tagged Message Delivery
Agent http://software.libertine.org/tmda/

We probably couldn't charge for it but the spammers continue getting
more and more obnoxious and this would cut 99% of spam out for some people.

We are looking at adding some type of similar system, where users could
have a list of E-mail addresses that they would automatically accept mail
from; anyone else would have to reply to a confirmation message in order to
be able to send E-mail.

[Declude.JunkMail] Advice for SUBJECT text

2002-05-20 Thread Dale McDiarmid

Hello...

Installed JunkMail on my corporate mailserver (150 employees), and so far,
I've set the SUBJECT text to [Spam]. My boss thinks it should be something
less definate. He suggests [Spam?] in order to give the impression that the
message *may* be spam.

I'm interested in what other admins who use SUBJECT are doing for your
text, and why.

I had the same concern. I like the question mark idea.

I'm currently using [JUNK], [JUNKMAIL], and [FILTERED] .. (with the

I've noticed that even Microsoft email is failing the REVDNS test. It's
probably because their server is behind a firewall.

Anyone got a good suggestion for how to handle email servers behind
firewalls that fail REVDNS??

2002-05-20 Thread R. Scott Perry

I've noticed that even Microsoft email is failing the REVDNS test. It's
probably because their server is behind a firewall.

No, that's not it. Even if their mailserver is behind a firewall (in which
case it likely has a private IP), Declude will see the public IP address,
which definitely should have a reverse DNS entry. I'm quite surprised that
Microsoft would make a mistake like that (unlike other types of mistakes
that Microsoft makes that don't surprise me...).

Anyone got a good suggestion for how to handle email servers behind
firewalls that fail REVDNS??

Firewalls can't prevent reverse DNS lookups from being done. It's
impossible. They could (in theory, although I've never heard of it being
done) block reverse DNS requests *if* the DNS servers are all behind the
firewall. But, they shouldn't all be behind the firewall.

RE: [Declude.JunkMail] Advice for SUBJECT text

2002-05-20 Thread Todd Holt

We use the subject [SPAM] to indicate that the server thought it was SPAM.
We found that this provokes more user thought than [SPAM??].

1- [SPAM] indicates that some process has actually concluded something about
the email and the user must act in order to correct the problem if it not
SPAM (ie. contact an admin to whitelist the address, etc).

2- If the email is SPAM, then the user feels confident in the servers
ability to determine what SPAM is.

3- [SPAM??] tends to lead the user to dismiss the message as What are you
asking me for, I don't have time to determine if it is SPAM!

If the user is asked to do something (determine if the message is SPAM) they
will feel burdened, but if the user thinks the server has done something
wronte (incorrectly determined the message is SPAM) they will feel like a
hero for indentifying the problem to an admin. :-))

[Declude.JunkMail] Bounce strategies?

2002-05-20 Thread Matt Robertson

I just switched from DELETE to BOUNCE on my weight13 test. I originally
set to DELETE, but wanted more of a safety factor in there, so went to
bounce.

Of course the inbox associated with the bounce msgs is loaded with
bounced bounce messages. Is it safe for me to do something like set
that acct to 1-byte capacaity, or a 1-message limit? Will other
postmasters bounce up and down when the bounced bounce bounces back to
them? Any advice would be appreciated.

2002-05-20 Thread Glenn \\ WCNet

I don't like the idea of bouncing or deleting any
messages. I don't want to take that responsibility, and potentially zap a
message that a user wants. I've set up a local blacklist (based on the
spams I've received that didn't fail any tests), a local whitelist, and I've
adjusted the individual pre-defined test weights a little, and am testing a
configuration that ATTACHes spam that hits a weight of 10, 14, or 20. I've
had a few non-spams get a weight of 10, but 14 and 20 are pretty on-target thus
far. If the users want to set up filters to delete messages, that's
*their* choice.

My problem at the moment is figuring out how to
explain to a rather unsophisticated user base how to set up their own client or

Re[2]: [Declude.JunkMail] Bounce strategies?

2002-05-20 Thread Eje Gustafsson

I don't like to delete either. I just the other week move almost fully
into a 100% weighted system (used to delete spamcop failed and had a few
ones that was set to bounce).
If the weight is above 30 I delete, weight above 20 I hold. 10 I just
put a header on.
The held messages I process with spam review (a great program) those
that are abvious junk mail that sends a lot of junk I have filters
that deletes the messages basically moves them from Decludes hold
folder to a spam review hold folder. Every couple of weeks I purge out
messages in the spam review hold folder that are older then 2 weeks.
So IF a customer is missing a piece of mail they have 2 weeks to get
hold of me. However messages that obviously are not junk but ended
up in the hold queue for one or another reason I use spam review to
return into the queue to get delivered if I see a large amount of held
messages from one person I usually create a rule to automatically
return this persons messages back into the queue and for the majority
of the time I run spam review in Out of office mode during which time
it will process my filters automatically. Messages that don't match my
filters will sit there for me when I have time (usually spend a little
time in the morning processing last 12-24 hours messages).

No complaints from any of our customers so far. Well besides the
common complaint that they get a lot of junk mail. Delog show that
I block 50-60% of incoming messages and yet they complain :(

Yes, I gave up on that as well. The way I approached it, I asked the
user base via a mass email for yea/nay opinions on implementing a spam
filter (*everyone* said yes), then later for permission to look at held
messages, then once my filters were in order (2 weeks) announced the
initiation of DELETE. No complaints, and only three instances since of
real mail getting sandbagged (I store my Declude logs forever, set to
MID).

Scott,

Maybe I misunderstood your comment but Eudora and Pegasus will filter on an
X-Header. Outlook and Outlook Express do not seem to allow for this. At
least I have not figured out how to do it.

Eudor does not include this as a default but you can add it. At least it
works with my version of Eudora and I know someone doing this with Pegasus.

What is really sad is that there has been a de-facto standard for
identifying spam for many years now (the X-RBL-Warning: header), yet I'm
not aware of a single mail client that detects it.

True, but you have to give people special instructions for those mail
clients (Go to Tools, then select Filters, click New Filter, choose
Incoming Messages, Any Header...).

What they are lacking is a How do you want to handle spam? ( ) Deliver
it, ( ) Delete it, (.) Move to 'spam folder' option, defaulting to Move
to 'spam folder'. End users wouldn't have to do a thing, and their spam
would be handled automatically for them.

Yes, I don't see any filter selection in OE (6) or
Netscape (4.79) for checking headers, but WebMail does. I think that's
where the ATTACH action becomesuseful -- the failed Junk-Mail tests are
listed in the body of the advisory, so OE users can do body= filters if they
want to "delete from server" (or whatever action)based on Weight

2002-05-20 Thread Bill Beach

That's because Outlook and/or Outlook Express don't have useable filters.

That's not entirely true. While Outlook doesn't have built-in filters to
look for X-RBL-Warning:, it can be configured to look in the headers for
this string and be filtered. I created a set of rules which I then exported
so when a user cries for help because of spam, I e-mail him/her the rules
file and then import them and activate them. Of course it does require
something to first put the string in the header--thank you Declude!

I played around with the filters.txt file that Outlook uses for its built-in
Junk and Adult Content e-mail detection and added {Headers contains
X-RBL-Warning:} but it didn't work--it apparently won't look into the
headers which is pretty sad.

Disclaimer: I work for a relatively small organization so it's quite easy
for me to bop around and set this up for people.

By usable filters, I mean being able to filter on headers (which *any*

versions of Outlook and/or Outlook Express that can filter on headers, but
there are also many that can not.

I don't have a list of which versions do and which do not. However, I have
heard from a lot of people (admins) that say that they can't find any way
for (some versions of) Outlook and/or Outlook Express to filter on headers.

It sounds like Microsoft may not have allowed header filtering in the past,
but perhaps more recent versions do.

RE: [Declude.JunkMail] Bounce strategies?

2002-05-20 Thread Charles Frolick

To solve that problem and postmaster bounces to bad addresses (spammers
sending to full or non-existing mailboxes) I wrote a script that scans the
spool for the bounce messages and removes them from queue after 3 failed
delivery attempts, my default is 24 attempts. This virtually eliminated
SMTP32 lockup since my queue no longer bloats with undeliverable mail. I
went from a low of approximately 800 messages in queue to 100 - 200 at
nearly any given time. The 800 was actually normal before using bounce. I
did notice before I used the script, that if the declude bounce fails, a
postmaster bounce is generated, compounding the clutter.

One last note, I started using bounce right after both it and weighting were
available, and only have had two complaints about wrongfully bounced mail, I
use a weight of 20 to bounce, with some tweaking to the weights, though.

[Declude.JunkMail] Wish List

Hi;
Would it not be great if we could assign an e-Mail or a number of
e-Mails that if someone sends a message to they will automatically get
blacklisted? This would immediately save all the junk they will manage
to send through.

We have had employees that are no longer with us (some for years) and
looking at our log files it is amazing how much junk mail we receive in
the nobody account for these users.. This is almost an absolutely
correct test since only the SPAMMERS are using these addresses.

Can this ever be done?

Regards,
Kami

hours) that will block this user for so many hours and then will release
it. This will save on the space needed to keep track of all the e-Mails
that will never be used but yet will save a lot of overhead during their
attack.

Of course the temporary blacklist will be in addition to the permanent
list that we are finding more and more companies that really need to be
blocked. Two new comers to us are:

@permissionpass.com
.permissionpass.com
@your-info.net
.your-info.net

We are flooded by these domains.

Anyhow

Regards,
Kami

Would it not be great if we could assign an e-Mail or a number of
e-Mails that if someone sends a message to they will automatically get
blacklisted? This would immediately save all the junk they will manage

to send through.

It is a good idea. The question though is what to block -- the remote
mailserver, the return address, or something else?

2002-05-20 Thread Tom Schwarz

I'm already doing this. I have a program on the server that runs 24x7 and
checks a specific email account every minute. In my case the email account
is [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This works with IMail Rules file.

The process is as follows:

You, as an email users, forward the email in question to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] This program sees the email, strips it down, and
replys to you with information about what email address it is going to add
to the IMail rules. If you reply to this email it is added to your Rules
and IMail takes care of all email from that address in the future. I could
add this to SpamReview, if you like and it would work in the Out-Of-Office
Mode, or make it a seperate program.

However, as Scott points out it will not be perfect.

[Declude.JunkMail] AOL, SpamCop et al

2002-05-20 Thread Matt Robertson

Does anyone know where I can check Spamcop to see if an address is listed with them?
They seem to have hidden the thing very well.

Part of why I'm asking is a client - using AOL's email program - just forwarded
several messages to recipients on my server and some of them were bounced. The tests
failed were NOPOSTMASTER and SPAMCOP.

Does SpamSop have the AOL domain blocked off? That'd be crazy.

There may be a URL with a form to do it, but if not, you can go to
http://spamcop.net/w3m?action=checkblockip=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (replacing
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx with the IP address you are looking up).

The SPAMCOP test doesn't discriminate -- if it sees spam from AOL
addresses, it will list them. Occasionally, popular ISPs will get a
mailserver that isn't an open relay listed in SPAMCOP, if they have a user
that sends out spam. Also, occasionally legitimate mailers will get listed
(if enough recipients think it is spam, even if they had previously
requested it, it will get listed).

Re: [Declude.JunkMail] Wish List

2002-05-20 Thread Eje Gustafsson

Hello Tom,

Would i tbe possible to have SpamReview submit mailservers to like
DSBL like test systems and possible Spamcop (maybe look in header to
check for what Declude test message didn't fail and submit to those
that it passed). Not sure how really useful it would be but it was a
thought I had the other day.

TS David,

TS Only if it were that easy. I'll toss it into the next major release.

TS ? Do you use the Out of Office feature now?

TS Tom

TS I'm already doing this. I have a program on the server that runs 24x7 and
TS checks a specific email account every minute. In my case the email account
TS is [EMAIL PROTECTED]

TS This works with IMail Rules file.

TS The process is as follows:

TS You, as an email users, forward the email in question to
TS [EMAIL PROTECTED] This program sees the email, strips it down, and
TS replys to you with information about what email address it is going to add
TS to the IMail rules. If you reply to this email it is added to your Rules
TS and IMail takes care of all email from that address in the future. I could
TS add this to SpamReview, if you like and it would work in the Out-Of-Office
TS Mode, or make it a seperate program.

TS However, as Scott points out it will not be perfect.

Would it not be great if we could assign an e-Mail or a number of
e-Mails that if someone sends a message to they will automatically get
blacklisted? This would immediately save all the junk they will manage
to send through.

TS It is a good idea. The question though is what to block -- the remote
TS mailserver, the return address, or something else?

[Declude.JunkMail] Enhancement - direct spam to folder

2002-05-20 Thread decjunkmail

I think this is somewhere on Scott's list, but I'd like to bring it up again as a
really good enhancement.

Have declude test that moves suspected spam to a mail folder.

This allows the system admin (us) to configure a good solution for naiive users.

We can let the users tell us which level of testing they want:

no testing (disable any spam tests)
delete (auto delete detected spam)
quarantine (move suspected email to a spam folder)

IMail supports folders with both POP and IMAP. For IMAP or WebMail, it is easy, for
POP, the user will need to be trained to configure an additional email profile with
the username-spambox%domain.com syntax to download the spambox folder (assuming non
static IP's).

But this training issue would be worth the trouble -- easier than trying to teach
them how to write filters or wrestle with OE/Outloook's lack of header filters or easy
way to write them.
