Title:
Videos is a very confusing name for a video player

Status in One Hundred Papercuts:
  Triaged
Status in “totem” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Ubuntu Ringtail daily 20130128

  1. Right-click on a video file in the file manager.
  2. After opening the file, choose Help About.

  What you see:
  1. Open With Videos
  2. Videos Videos Totem Website.

  What's wrong with this:
  1. Open a video with videos? That doesn't make any sense. I have a Videos
folder, but this video is not in that folder.
  2. The window is titled About Videos, but doesn't tell me anything about
videos. And then a wild Totem appears.

This is a regression: In Ubuntu 12.10 and earlier, the program was
called Movie Player, which was pretty accurate.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1263278] Re: Use FFmpeg instead of Libav

2013-12-21 Thread Ma Xiaojun
They can easily be ported to libavresample.

With FFmpeg we can have both libswresample and libavresample.
Asking everyone to use libavresample is a waste of resource and there is no
gain at all.

This would break a lot of software, produce more work for ubuntu
developers, and would cause less software to build.

Can you name a software that only builds with Libav?
It's the switching to Libav that breaks enough out-of-repository software.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1241309] Re: Ubuntu 13.10 has no way to change individual input method settings

2013-12-17 Thread Ma Xiaojun
Dear ibus-chewing users:

Ubuntu's keyboard indicator doesn't provide a UI for config input
engines currently, which is certainly a BIG problem.

However, ibus-chewing has an inherent problem that makes it impossible for
other programs to invoke its config UI:

This is a UI problem that happens in Ubuntu 13.10, with the default

I live in Taiwan and use Chinese input methods. Other languages may
  differ.

This is how I can change the individual settings of input methods in the old
Ubuntu 12.04 LTS:
  (1) With iBus enabled, click on the keyboard icon on the upper right corner
of the screen. Then click Preferences.
  (2) Set the Show language panel option to Always.
  (3) The language panel will appear somewhere on the screen, click on the
Preferences icon.
  (4) Then I can set the options of the current input method, such as
Bopomofo in the screenshot below.

  https://www.dropbox.com/s/5mrb1qfgx4u37rv/ubuntu-ime-individual-settings-2.png

The procedure above can still work until Ubuntu 13.10.

In Ubuntu 13.10, I don't see any way to show the setting of that Bopomofo
input method, or Chewing, or whatever.
And there is no option to Show language panel either.
  (screenshot:)
  https://www.dropbox.com/s/03i3duwmu8wc4mk/ubuntu-ime-individual-settings-3.png

This problem is making me inconvenient to use. I hope this could be
  fixed soon.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1220985] Re: Upgrade to latest ibus-pinyin release 1.5.0

2013-12-16 Thread Ma Xiaojun
Do not underestimate the importance of this bug.

Legacy ibus-pinyin release you currently shipping is designed to work
with IBus 1.4.x. As you've updated the IBus stack to IBus 1.5.x, you
need to make sure the engines are also recent enough.

Legacy ibus-pinyin release also has many known bugs that have zero
chance of getting fix.

ibus is one of the most popular input method frameworks used in CJK

This is caused by a flawed icon file, /usr/share/icons/ubuntu-mono-

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 904043] Re: installed fonts are not actually available for use

Title:
installed fonts are not actually available for use

Status in “fontconfig” package in Ubuntu:
  New
Status in “xfonts-100dpi” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
The xfonts-75dpi package is also affected.

I installed ubuntu and found that certain standard X fonts such as
adobe-courier were not available. Curiously, installing the xfonts-
75dpi and xfonts-100dpi packages did *not* fix the problem. The fonts
remained unavailable. They did not show up with xfontsel and when
used (e.g. by xterm -fn) they are subsitututed by other fonts. Even
more curiously, a bit of probing revealed that the font files were
  actually present in /usr/share/fonts/X11.

Based on this article from 2008, it appears that this is a long
  standing and pervasive problem:

http://www.oreillynet.com/linux/blog/2008/02/where_did_the_courier_and_helv_1.html

I followed the method described in this article and added

 dir/usr/share/fonts/Type1/dir
 dirusr/share/fonts/X11/dir

to the file /etc/fonts/conf.avail/51-local.conf and found that this
  made the fonts available.

So in short, the installer for these fonts is broken. It installs the
files but does not make the necessary changes to the font
configuration files so that the fonts can actually be used.

Maybe we should instead ask Eclipse upstream to provide a more Ubuntu-

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1066599]

2013-06-13 Thread Ma Xiaojun
Hi,

The upstream Mesa fix won't get distributions' libOSMesa right
automatically.

It seems that libOSMesa need to be compiled without --enable-shared-
glapi while other Mesa components need --enable-shared-glapi

Therefore, distributions need to build libOSMesa separately, which is
not been done in Arch, Debian, Ubuntu currently.

Is this the right way to compile Mesa? Is there any distributions
already do things right? Would you file bugs to distributions?

Thank you in advance.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 281526] Re: Flash uses 100% CPU after resuming from suspend

2013-06-11 Thread Ma Xiaojun
Adam Porter,

If you don't understand the concept that there is no point in fixing
non-free Flash implementation if free Flash implementation works, then I
probably can't convince you. Maybe someone else can. Good luck to you.

Sometimes when resuming from suspend-to-RAM, Firefox becomes
unresponsive and uses 100% CPU time. An strace shows it in a cycle
  like this:

  --- SIGIO (I/O possible) @ 0 (0) ---
  rt_sigreturn(0xb2503d90) = 240
  futex(0xb2503d90, 0x80 /* FUTEX_??? */, 2) = ? ERESTARTSYS (To be restarted)

This repeats endlessly and uses all available CPU time. It doesn't always
happen, and I haven't noticed a pattern yet, but it's happened 3 or 4 times in
the last week.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1066599] Re: Wine is unable to detect OSMesa correctly when compiling from source

2013-06-10 Thread Ma Xiaojun
The upstream fix basically make it _possible_ to compile OSMesa without
shared glapi.

It seems that Mesa components except OSMesa do need --enable-shared-
glapi .

So I currently work around this issue as I don't install libosmesa* from
the repository.

Instead, I compile libOSMesa manually as:
# Download and untar Mesa source
autoreconf -fi
./configure --enable-shared --disable-static --enable-texture-float
--enable-osmesa --disable-gallium-llvm --disable-dri --disable-egl
--disable-glx --with-gallium-drivers= --with-dri-drivers=
make
sudo make install
sudo ldconfig

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1125944] Re: (gedit:3366): IBUS-WARNING **: The owner of /home/oem/.config/ibus/bus is not root!

2013-06-09 Thread Ma Xiaojun
The reason for this bug is that when you start gedit or so IM module
from IBus got loaded. As you do sudo, the user of IM module would be
root.

However, the ibus-daemon is started by the normal user in most cases,
which would create ~/.config/ibus/bus if it doesn't exists.

IIRC, this is the limitation of current D-Bus technology that two
processes having different user (uid) cannot communicate. The warning is
just the superfacial representation of it.

In vanilla IBus1.4.x, it can either be embedded into tray icon or be shown in
independent language panel.
The default option is Embedded in menu, it embeds the context menu to tray
icon. While other options When active and Always uses langauge panel.

With IBus indicator, however, the context menu is totally invisible with
the default option Embedded in menu. One has to manually enable When
active or Always to access the per engine context menu.

Install Karmic with a different layout than the default (for example AZERTY).
Activate IBUS input, then set the Use system keyboard layout setting on.

The default system layout will be used for inputing Chinese -

I did some poking around, and found that GTK_IM_MODULE=ibus, but
  QT_IM_MODULE=xim - clearing that variable with 'QT_IM_MODULE= qt_app'
  fixes the problem.

Then I looked to see where it's being set to XIM, and it looks like the
problem is in /etc/X11/xinput.d/ibus, line 12. It's looking for
/usr/lib/qt4/plugins/inputmethods/libqtim-ibus.so, but the file is actually at
  /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/qt4/plugins/inputmethods/libqtim-ibus.so. When I
corrected the path in this file, the environment variable was correctly set to
ibus instead of xim.

Status in “ibus-hangul” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: ibus

The ibus Korean(Hangul) has a bug that duplicates previous character
after moving to a different input entry with mouse.

For example, when entering Korean characters in multi form entries on
a web site, if you finished one entry and move to the next one with
  Tab key, it is okay.

However, if you move to the next entry with mouse, the ibus
Korean(Hangul) duplicates the last character typed in the previous
  entry.

  Entry1 Entry2
  가나 나

Even though I've never typed 나 in Entry2. By just moving the input
mouse pointer to Entry2 by clicking it, the ibus Korean(Hangul)
  duplicates the last character typed.

I guess that the solution would be to make a mouse pointer move
equivalent to Tab key, thus the Korean(Hangul) automaton just resets
its input buffer in this case also. Is it hard to implement this?
Other input method like nabi has no such problem.

  Thank you.

  QT apps won't work - QT_IM_MODULE=xim

Status in “ibus” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
In both ubuntu and xubuntu, natty and oneiric (haven't tried kubuntu,
though I imagine it works there, at least!) ibus input is broken for
qt apps - I can use ctrl-space to type in Japanese, but can't use the
compose key to enter accented letters.

I did some poking around, and found that GTK_IM_MODULE=ibus, but
  QT_IM_MODULE=xim - clearing that variable with 'QT_IM_MODULE= qt_app'
  fixes the problem.

Then I looked to see where it's being set to XIM, and it looks like the
problem is in /etc/X11/xinput.d/ibus, line 12. It's looking for
/usr/lib/qt4/plugins/inputmethods/libqtim-ibus.so, but the file is actually at
  /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/qt4/plugins/inputmethods/libqtim-ibus.so. When I
corrected the path in this file, the environment variable was correctly set to
ibus instead of xim.

Status in “ubuntu-wallpapers” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Even in raring, the slideshow provided in the ubuntu-wallpapers-

  The fix is straight forward:

source dir)

  transition
  duration5.0/duration
  from/usr/share/backgrounds/Sunset.jpg/from
  to/usr/share/backgrounds/TheRainbowisDead.jpg/to
/transition -- This one is missing

Just adding it fixes this issue.
AFAIK, there is no regression potential and this fix can be applied on all

Similar issue was detected with the xsplash backround in Karmic, where

The 'Dawn of Ubuntu' Wallpaper was licensed incorrectly and
subsequently removed from FeistyFawn and later packages. I will work
with the creator, Armin Ronacher, to properly license his work
  Creative Commons -by 3.0.

The 'Dawn of Ubuntu' wallpaper has been much requested and missed in
newer versions. I see no reason for it not to be included as an
alternate background. Once it is correctly under CC it can be decided
if it will be included or not.

  http://lucumr.pocoo.org/cogitations/2007/09/21/where-is-dawn-of-ubuntu/

So why is that wallpaper not in ubuntu any more? The reason is a
misunderstanding and my own personal lack of license knowledge. I
released it with a limited CC license which was not compatible with
the ubuntu license, just that nobody noticed till (edgy? feisty?) no
idea. Anyhow. If someone is missing that wallpaper, you can find it in
the art section. And if one wants to have that in ubuntu again, file a
bug in launchpad. I will do my best then to resolve that licensing
  issue.

2013-04-14 Thread Ma Xiaojun
This problem is partially worked around by not-so-recent translation change in
upstream.
https://git.gnome.org/browse/gedit/tree/po/zh_CN.po#n424

Such translation is included in 3.6.1 tarball already but Unfortunately
Ubuntu 12.10, even claim to have Gedit 3.6.1, doesn't seem to get that
from upstream.

  to reproduce, do:

  $ mkdir Schüler
  $ convmv -f utf8 -t latin1 --notest Schüler
  $ touch Sch*ler/test.txt
  $ zip schueler.zip Sch*ler/test.txt
  $ file-roller schueler.zip

and try to unpack the folder somewhere (using dragdrop). you get the
  error message described above.

the file attached shows the problem and was created roughly as
  described above.

it seems that the file name gets shell-escaped (as the problem doesn't
show up with file names containing literal question marks), then
passed through something that reduces unprintable characters to
question marks, and then again inserted in a shell command.

(standard note: using shell commands with untrusted data can be made
somewhat safe by using escaping, but (as this bug shows) escaping can
be erroneous. it is usually possible to get along without passing data
through shells just as well, which is much safer.)

  What happens
Because of the inherent limitations in the ZIP archive format as described at
http://superuser.com/questions/60379/linux-zip-tgz-filenames-encoding-problem
it is not possible to encode file names with non-english characters so they
deflate with the correct names.

If the problem is only with files in subfolders it is quite possible
that I won't even see the problem until I try to extract the files -
at which time it is too late to find the files original name.

  What I expect
I expect to be warned (at least the first time) if this is going to happen.
Even better file-roller could suggest an archive format which will not mangle
the letters.

As I marked some bugs as duplicate of this one.

I'd repeat the workaround for 12.04+ is using unar command line tool.

Since the encoding issue usually happen with ZIP archives, -O/-I option
of unzip (available 11.10+) also worth a try.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 592109] Re: ZIP archives with non-ASCII filenames cannot survive a round-trip in File Roller (when p7zip is not installed)

2013-04-14 Thread Ma Xiaojun
As I mardek quite a few bugs as duplicate of this one. I'd mention that
there is a simple workaround, install p7zip.

The bug is caused by zip/unzip stack provided by Info-Zip. In
particular, zip(1) seems to have no problem creating a ZIP archive with
non-ASCII file name; the encoding used is UTF-8. However, unzip(1) just
refuse to list any non-ASCII printable character in filenames.

As FIle Roller use zip/unzip as one of its backend for ZIP, the same
issue can be seen in File Roller.

When p7zip is installed, File Roller would use it as backend for ZIP
instead. Therefore, to hide the problem from end users, we may let file-
roller depends on p7zip so that we can guarantee that we have a working
ZIP stack.

characters like é, è, ç, etc. the following happens :

  1) File-roller shows a badly decoded name in its interface
  2) Sometimes it's impossible to extract the file because the command line
generated by file-roller uses those badly decoded names

Extracting the files with unzip file.zip works perfectly though

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 699805] Re: Fr, Pt characters in the name of file inside rar

2013-04-14 Thread Ma Xiaojun
If the problems still exists, please split the issue for RAR and ZIP.

RAR related issue is likely to be caused by the fact that broken version rar is
included in 11.10-12.10, it will be upgraded in 13.04.
The issue can be workarounded by removing rar package and install rar from
official site.
http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm (Choose RAR 4.20 for Linux or RAR 4.20 for
Linux x64)

For ZIP related issues, please refer to bug 495880 or bug 596193

Title:
Fr, Pt characters in the name of file inside rar

Status in “file-roller” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: file-roller

It's the 3th time this happens

A rar or zip that has been compressed (most likely) with a MS windows
compression tool in a non-english system (say portuguese, french and
  brazilian)

The files within where named using ie brazilian characters (áéúíó ãõ )

The file was sent to me and when I open it with file-roller 2.32.0

The contained file has this original word funèbre

in file-roller it appers like this funŠbre (the character is
garbled) and doesn't allow either rename or extract

But the most curious thing is this :
the original name is Rondò (with the ò character) but it appears in the
file-roller as rondo with the characte not accentuated

!!! I can successfully unrar, test and read the file in the shell
  using ' unrar e file.rar ' !!!
