have been said, but digging into that does not help.


What compelling reasons are there to not work together again, in one 
Community?


TDF is there, TDF is open, and to me, it would be the ideal home of a 
united Community. The decision about that requires no leader, but you, 
anyone of you, can make it on your own.


Our future can be bright. Let's make it together.

The question I raised was not rhetorical. I don't want to say take TDF 
as is, but I am open to feedback and criticism. If there is anything 
that needs to be changed or improved, any criticism that is justified, I 
definitely will not ignore it, but rather try to work on it and improve 
things. However, I will also take position to criticism that from my 
point of view is simply not justified, and I think, that combination is 
a good basis for a discussion.


So, again, my question to all of the OpenOffice.org community: Is there 
any particular reason on why working together, jointly, united, is not 
possible? Is there any justified reason on why working under the 
umbrella of a different foundation, or even setting up another 
foundation in parallel, makes sense?


I am open to discussion on any channel -- and although I think that the 
OpenOffice.org mailing lists are indeed the right channel to discuss the 
future of the OpenOffice.org community, I am happy to discuss on any 
other channel. Needless to say, I prefer openness and transparency, 
whereever possible.


Face to face meetings are of course an option, but it will exclude those 
who cannot participate, so why not initiate the discussion on the list 
here as I did?

Dear OpenOffice.org marketing contacts,
Dear OpenOffice.org marketing project members,

this e-mail is to inform you that I hereby, effective immediately, fully 
step back from all my roles and duties within the OpenOffice.org 
project, including those as marketing project lead and German marketing 
contact.


I would like to take the chance to say a few very personal words to all 
of you.


I had the honour to be a part of this project for six and a half years 
now -- serving as German marketing contact since March 2005, as 
marketing project co-lead since July 2007, and as marketing project lead 
since January 2010. Not only did I learn many things for life, have been 
part of exciting times (remembering moments like the long anticipated 
release of OpenOffice.org 2.0 back in October 2005), and had the 
privilege of being part in one of the largest open source projects 
worldwide. Even more, I also experienced wonderful teachers, brilliant 
colleagues, and -- most important and above all -- made true friends for 
life. It's not a secret if I say that this project has given me the 
busiest but also the most exciting moments in life so far, and I am 
proud and thankful for the time I had the honour to spend here. No 
matter where my future ways will lead me, my time in the project always 
will be a very important part of my life, something I look back to, 
being very proud and very thankful.


We now have exciting times again.

Many of you have seen the recent announcement of The Document Foundation 
and LibreOffice, a so very important step and major initiative that I am 
proud of being a part in, helping to shape the future of the Community, 
to bring not only our software, but also our project to the next level. 
I fully stand behind this step, and I envision a future even brighter 
than the past has been, a next decade even more successful than the 
previous one which passed by in, it feels, just a moment of time.


I leave with no bad feelings at all, and I still feel being a part of 
this Community, not leaving you alone. It comes with great sadness to 
hear the concerns the step we've taken has led to for some people, that 
there is the fear of conflicts of interest, thinking about two different 
projects and products. I don't share these feelings at all, but even if 
I did, we, after all, have so many things in common - independent from 
any name, to me there is one joint vision, one joint goal, and there is 
one Community. Differences are in the way we want to achieve these 
goals, in how we would like to have the project governed - but all 
powers we invest to fight each other right now can much more wisely be 
spend with doing good and positive things, and so I want to move on.


These last weeks have been extremely exciting, exhausting, busy and 
interesting. Many of us need time to relax, to think, and to understand 
what is happening, what is going on. My last wish being on duty in this 
project is an invitation to all of you for next year, to talk about 
where we stand, and what options we have. Even if right now it doesn't 
look likely, I am deep inside absolutely convinced that there will be 
chances and options of working together, united. Call me a dreamer, but 
remember my words next year. ;-)


I hereby would like to hand over all of my duties in the marketing 
project to my colleague Peter Junge, whom I propose for the role as 
marketing project lead from now on.


Talking of Peter, there are dozens of people who I personally would like 
to express my deepest thankfulness to. Counting and naming them would be 
an undoable task, as there are so many, and chances are that I forget 
someone - so, let me take this chance of thanking you for what we have 
achieved the past years. For what we have shaped, formed, created, for 
what we have enjoyed together, and for all those wonderful moments we 
spent together.


I will not make a recommendation on which mailing lists you should 
subscribe to in the future, which project you should join. Instead, I 
would like to quote something I read on the German lists: Look at both, 
ask questions, be critical when it is necessary, and decide for yourself.


In whatever way, I invite all of you for cooperation, and I am very sure 
that our paths will cross in the future.


I am very much looking forward to that.

this, but will rather work on the LibO feature list on the

under a free license, so maybe we can all benefit from each other.

There have been discussions with Mike and Paul from ALISON. They have 
been in touch since 2009, and Mike also had a talk in Orvieto.


As you can imagine, in the current situation, I cannot work on the topic 
of OpenOffice.org certifications, so I just wanted to keep you in the 
loop and remind that there's a work item.


If there is anyone who wants to work on the topic, Peter has a proposal 
by ALISON and has been in touch with them.

There is a group in the certification project that includes Alexandro,
Evan, myself, Gabriel Gurley and Manfred Reiter. We have already put the
unit assessment criteria on the project Wiki and we applied for an EU
grant to support development. Unfortunately that was not successful but
from the feedback it looks like we can fix that for next year. (We have
been successful in two other similar applications in other areas) I have
approval from the UK Sector Skills Council to develop a version of the
ITQ national vocational qualification for IT Users to fit OOo - It will
be called Award in IT User Skills (Openoffice.org) and be accredited in
the UK National Qualifications framework. This framework is one of the
first to be referenced to the European Qualifications framework so that
employers throughout Europe will recognise its value. Once we do this in
the UK, we will apply again for a transfer of innovation grant to
transfer this to other EU partner countries and should be able to get a
grant of around 300,000 Euros to pay for training, travel etc. In
addition to the EU links, we have established contacts in Malaysia with
a joint project with UPSI, the biggest teacher training university
there. We have a pilot in Kenya, and established links in USA through
the National Center for Open Source in Education, South Africa and
India.

Our target is to have the qualification fully accredited through the UK
government regulators by January, then we can start training assessors
and apply for a supporting transfer of innovation grant to support and
accelerate that work next year. We need to agree with the community how
to provide revenue to the project from accredited certification. In the
UK, courses leading to accredited qualifications are funded those that
are not aren't so it is important to be accredited.


I'm sure that details on certification and training have to be
determined -- I'm all for having things in community hands instead of at
a single corporation -- but I guess that having some external support
and input is highly welcome.


I'm currently talking to a large UK exam board with a 200 million Euro
turnover. If this works out they are an exempted charity focused on
education so there will be no need to worry about single corporations.

[marketing] Who can speak publically for OpenOffice.org

Hi,

although being not on duty, at least at the moment, I feel responsible 
for sharing this discussion with you. I know that some of you are also 
involved with The Document Foundation and LibreOffice, or might be 
interested to do so.


I don't want to start a discussion here, nor blame anyone - we all know 
these are not easy times.


I also don't know if that discussion from the Council session affects 
MarCons - but anyways, I wanted to share this with you, should there be 
discussions regarding MarCons roles in the future. Basically, during the 
council meetings, there have been concerns that those having a strong 
relationship to TDF should not speak on behalf of OpenOffice.org.


As stated, I'm sure things will turn out well for the future in one way 
or another, but to prevent surprises, I wanted to share this with you.

machines).

[marketing] status of certification and training

Hello,

last week, I had a phone call with Mike and Paul from ALISON - some of 
you may remember Mike very well from the talk he held at OOoCon 2009 in 
Orvieto.


They were (and are) interested in supporting and joining our efforts for 
certification and training, and will come up with a more detailed 
proposal. They have the required framework as well as lots of expertise 
in their area.


Many of you know that I'm not only buried in work :-) but also that 
certification and training is not my area of working. I know Mike has 
been in contact with Alexandro, and probably Louis, and we all know that 
the certification issue has been idling around for a very long time.


Can someone bring me up to date on what's happening in that area 
currently? Is there already a group working on it that likes to get in 
touch with ALISON?


I'm sure that details on certification and training have to be 
determined -- I'm all for having things in community hands instead of at 
a single corporation -- but I guess that having some external support 
and input is highly welcome.

basically, it looks ok to me, however:

- I don't know if we can add text to the symbol as it's protected.

- There is no official OOo logo font, unfortunately. We've been trying 
to get a free font used, to no avail. It is IMHO a commercial font that 
has been modified for the logo.


So, either we only use the symbol, or we combine it with the official 
OOo logo?

I have no real preference on the type of disc. For the design, I prefer 
blue disc with white gulls, but I'll leave the final choice to this list 
and you. :-)

b) textil with plastic coat, foldable


Do you have pictures of these discs, how they look like?

be better to drop the idea, or try to realize it for a different date
than the conference. I wasn't able to find someone in Budapest who could
produce the discs.


sorry for stepping in so late, but my exams kept my quite busy, today I 
had an OOo interview and over the weekend I'll be in Stuttgart, doing an 
OOoDeV meeting - so I can't look into anything before Monday.


Thanks to everyone for their contribution, and thanks to Rosana for 
driving this! If we can have flying discs for the conference, that would 
be great, and I guess Peter and I would be happy to authorize the budget.


If, however, we are too short in time, we can't change things - our day 
has only 24 hours. :(


Anyways, would be great if we could have the discs! ;)

[marketing] 10 years celebrations in two steps

Hello,

in yesterday's marketing confcall, we agreed on doing the 10 years 
celebrations in two steps.


Until OOoCon, we want to have

* flying discs
* stickers
* and if possible, postcards

These need to be ready-for-production in one to two weeks, otherwise we 
run out of time.


For the stickers, Lars will be the main responsible party, and for 
flying discs, Rosana and I will be responsible.


Anyone wants to take over the task with postcards?

For our birthday on October 13th, we have a little bit more time and 
will host a conference call mid-August dedicated to discussion of this 
birthday. Ideas will be collected in the wiki at 
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/10YearsOOo so please feel free 
to contribute there and share your idea on the mailing list. Anyways, 
production of collaterals for this date should also start in September, 
so we are in time.

[marketing] strategic marketing plan

Just wanted to let you know what in yesterday's marketing conference 
call, we decided to shift the strategic marketing plan to the weeks 
after OOoCon.


In Budapest, Peter Junge and I will have a three hour workshop together 
with all of you to share first ideas. Due to busy times before OOoCon, 
we can't work on it before.

a brochure, for example), but in context (i.e. you have just been handed one of
the plastic discs) just as cute and memorable.


Jens had a great idea yesterday. He said there are flying discs where 
you can actually put in a CD/DVD. That would fit. :-)

absolutely agreed. Such an opportunity doesn't come that often. :-)


I suggest to have a common media kit ready to be distributed to the
press in advance. Ideally, we should have the media kit ready after the
Budapest conference, in order to get ink on monthlies.

I can draft a media plan late next week, when I will be on holiday with
wireless access. I can even try to update the wiki, although I do not
feel comfortable with these digital natives tools.


Would be great to have your support! I'm fairly busy with exams at the 
moment and will take a time off in August, so I can't prepare much 
before OOoCon. Any help is welcome.

well, let's look into this after the summer vacation, probably. I'm 
still against SIP, because it has much more problems on the firewall 
side than a normal phone call, but if it's prefered by many of us, we 
can look into it, of course.


However, be aware that e.g. people joining from companies need to use a 
regular phone as they cannot use outgoing SIP in many cases, so we need 
a solution that fits both.

agreed. Skype is not a perfect solution.


There are dial-in capabilities for SIP, but that like with other
protocols is dependent on the host/exchange for the conference.
Maybe when school starts the is a group that wants to take on setting up
Asterisk for us.


The problem is not the Asterisk server. Can do so in 10 minutes or so. 
The problem are local dial-in numbers in various countries.

I like the frisbee idea. They are good for kids and adults alike. I also like

indeed - frisbees are unisize, unisex, and nobody complains about 
colors. ;-)



The question I have is what kind of frisbee: fabric with wire in rim, plastic
disc, plastic/rubber ring (flat like the ring of saturn)... I think the most
impt thing is that they be light weight and compact size to transport. Then they
are a big improvement over heavy t-shirts and any other give-aways marketing
folks otherwise have to drag around or in Florian's case, carry on their backs.
;-)


Hehe. :-) Well, I'm open up to anything, I didn't research yet. I guess 
it will also depend on the costs.

is counting less.

Please could someone rectify it?

idea, apart from the stamp proposal, is one of the ideas I really like

But I would like to shear the place for our discussion to make new SMP.
Can you make an initial wiki page of this special program for SMP?
And I would like to know what is the difficult barrier, if it's clear.


We're working on the SMP, and we already have a rough timeline for it (a 
first brainstorming in Budapest). At the moment, however, Peter Junge is 
very busy with the OOoCon organizing, and I am very busy with learning 
for my exams, so neither of us finds time to work on the SMP. Give us a 
few weeks, so we can start with the topic hopefully soon. :-)



I am conceiving the idea based on JA activity.
At first, short notice from JA status.

- I introduced this discussion, and raised the opinion through the JA
marketing project.

- Maho has tweeted the opinion inquiry of this special project by the
JA official twitter account.

I unfortunately did not find the time yet, but I've added a reminder to 
the wiki for myself. ;)



I didn't add the item to the wiki by now, because the thread here on the
list was quite negative [1], while discussion on the phone conference
was much more positive [2].

If this idea should work, we would need contacts in several countries as
well as the approval by Sun/Oracle to use the new OOo logo for that
purpose.


I think we should try. I guess it will be pretty expensive, but without 
trying, we don't know. :-)

and I hope I don't talk too fast :-)



First of all, I illustrate three points. I feel these are important point.

- It cooperates all over the world.
  Who will cooperate? Community Council, NLC, Projects, major
contributor corporations, user corporations or organizations, ...


I think the major stakeholder is the marketing project, but of course, 
support from all within the community is important. We then can include 
externals as needed.



- It keeps regularly exposing media.
  What and How and When, expose media? Community, Product, Standards,
UseCase, ... and PRWeb, Press Lecture by telecoference or F2F, Media
Interview via online, Social media,... and Twice a week, a week, every
two weeks,...


Right. The more, the better, because we can reach people on various 
platforms.



- It is based on the new SMP following start of next 3 or 5 years.
  Where is the new SMP special project wiki? :)


I guess the 10 years celebration will be done earlier than the SMP is 
ready. :(



Let's make a best way to reach best marketing target and pass.
And, let's develop into the new community state that more
conscientious contributors concentrate.
