Re: Re: jVi for Apache NetBeans

2019-11-09 Thread Eric Bresie
Assume the idea was to walk with a few plugins on the new site before running
but it seems maybe it might be good to crank it up a bit to allow more plugins
to migrate.

Would it be worth putting some sort of notice on the legacy plugin welcome page
to point to information on “This site will be deprecated. See additional
information for migrating plugins see here.” (To page with all the details
mentioned in this thread like publishing to maven central, new plugin portal
details, etc).

Re: Re: jVi for Apache NetBeans

2019-11-09 Thread Eric Bresie
If I read it correctly, reference to the 11.2 catalogs on the legacy plugin
site redirects to the 11.0 catalog. So assume that means no real 11.2 catalog
exists and registering information for a 11.2 plugin has to be contained in the
real 11.0 catalog. Is that right?

According to Matthias at plugins.netbeans.org the 11.2 catalog is not
used by the 11.2 IDE. 11.2 uses the 11.0 catalog. If the 11.2 catalog is
not used by an IDE, then I'd call it a black hole; and confusing to have
11.2 as a verification option. His post looks pretty definitive. If his
post is correct, then it's unclear to me what it is I'm
misunderstanding. BTW, it doesn't seem like a bad idea to use 11.0
catalog for all 11.x releases, considering how the ecosystem is changing.

Re: jVi for Apache NetBeans

2019-11-08 Thread Ernie Rael
In the Plugin Manager, there is NB 8.2 plugin portal. I enable this, and
I don't see the jVi UC plugin.

It looks like the only contributed plugins that are available (without
manual intervention) come from the new apache infrastructure. I didn't
realize this, that was my confusion. If that's not entirely accurate, in
any event I've missed the window for the plugins.netbeans.org
infrastructure, and I'll move on to maven.

I've added the router plugin for jVi to the old plugin portal. It has
been verified and is now marked as 11.2 UC. The idea was to provide a
convenient way for users to get jVi on 11.2. However I now discover that

defeats the purpose of the whole exercise.

I have never used maven. I suspect this is a steep learning curve. jVi
won't be available from NB plugin manager until I can get the current

My bad. Looks like plugins.netbeans.org is still active. I requested
reinstatement of my login permission. When that happens I'll be able to
re-upload the same old .nbm and mark it for 11.2 (same bits for over 7
years). That nbm is trivial. It just installs an update center.
Unfortunately the update center files it points to reside on
Sourceforge, and I've heard that there are reliability/availability
problems.

Since a user manually installed the update center, downloaded jVi and
got jVi running, that should be the end of it for now, except for having
to re-upload the identical bits of this tiny module every time there is
a new release of NB. Are there plans for a new plugin portal?

jVi for Apache NetBeans

2019-11-04 Thread Ernie Rael

Greetings and long time...

I just got a feature request to make jVi accessible through the new
ApacheNetBeans update mechanisms given that with 11.2 NB is "back in
business". Previously the jVi plugin installed an update center, and
through jVi's update center several modules were made available. This
allowed for rapid fixes and avoided the old update center's problems
with a multi-module plugin.

The good news is that, according to the user, manually installing the
old jVi still operates. That's also the bad news. In some areas,
particularly window management, jVi makes extensive use of reflection
and looking into the UI widget hierarchy to support programmatically
splitting and moving windows. I've cc'd Graeme Ingleby who has done some
work cleaning up NB's window manager, see Enhanced WindowManager
.
jVi could be phased: 1 - get jVi into plugin portal, 2 - contrib jVi, 3
- cleanup NB integration.

There are some issues about better integration into NB
*Bug 198657*
-APIs to work with Modes (implement jVi window split/move/... commands)
The main objection, from Stanislav Aubrecht, seemed to be that the
suggested APIs expose too much, particularly when you consider that a
different window manager could be plugged in that it might not support
window splitting. Seems some simple queries for "is XXX feature present"
would solve this, or just throwing an exception.

There also
*Bug 135385* -add
attachTopComponentToSide method to WindowManager
*Bug 96323* -Need
ability to dock and undock TopComponents programmatically to/from a
Frame or Dialog
I'd need to study these to see how they are meaningful they are now. And
there's
*Bug 179047* -jVi
integration

which is an umbrella issue (including here for my own information)

I haven't used jVi or NB for several years. I suspect simply getting jVi
into the new plugin portal will require more than a little support.
