As of today, I have built Node.js 22.2.0 for Fedora Rawhide. It is
currently available as a non-default package (Node.js 20 remains the
default during this short transition period).

If you maintain a package that depends on Node.js (either runtime or
build-time), please take some time in the next week or so to verify
whether it continues to work properly with Node.js 22. I plan to
switch the default in Rawhide over to 22.x as per the
recently-approved Change[1] on or shortly after May 27th.

If you encounter a significant problem with Node.js 22, please contact
the nod...@fedoraproject.org mailing list and we will try to help you.

Re: HEADS UP: gdal-3.9.0 coming to rawhide

2024-05-15 Thread Sandro Mani

Hi

I've now merged the side tag.

Three packages failed to build:

- bes: FTBFS due to multiple causes (lxml2, hdf5 incompatibilities,
incompatible-pointer-type errors, missing flex/bison BR - I gave up on
the hdf5 incompatibilities)
- python-fiona: Test failures related to the parquet file format, I'll
try to investigate further
- python-rasterio: Test failures, possibly also related to GDAL, I'll
also try to investigate further

Planning to orphan freeimage

2024-04-02 Thread Sandro Mani

Hi

I intend to orphan freeimage. Probably, the package should rather just
be retired. Upstream is effectively dead, and there is a constant stream
of CVEs getting filed against the package which are not addressed
upstream. Over the past two years I've fixed many of those CVEs
downstream, but the most recent batch of 15 CVEs is leading me to
capitulate. Currently, the following packages require freeimage:

PerceptualDiff
allegro5
cegui06
deepin-image-viewer
gazebo
imv
ogre
photoqt

A minimal impact check:

PerceptualDiff: freeimage is a hard dependency. PerceptualDiff itself
has seen its last commit 4 years ago, last release 8 years ago

allegro5: freeimage is an optional dependency
cegui06: freeimage is an optional dependency
deepin-image-viewer: freeimage is a hard dependency
gazebo: freeimage is a hard dependency. (The fedora package is for
"gazebo-classic" https://github.com/gazebosim/gazebo-classic, which
points to https://github.com/gazebosim/gz-sim as the "latest version",
which does not appear to require freeimage)

imv: freeimage is an optional dependency
ogre: freeimage is an optional dependency
photoqt: freeimage is an optional dependency

Thanks

Sandro

Re: QGIS rebuild needed after GRASS GIS update

Hi Markus

I'm happy to help coordinating the grass update. Note however that:

- If the update does not carry ABI changes (and hence soname bumps), a
rebuild of QGIS is not needed
- If The update does carry a soname bump, it should be avoided in stable
releases

At this point I guess it'll need retiring on both rawhide

Correct, I missed that. Geg, Sandro, can you retire the mingw-libgsf package?

I've retired the package, but not sure if it worked 100% as I'm not

In the fmt.spec you posted, I see

%mingw_cmake -G Ninja  [...]

this means that you are generating ninja build scripts, not Makefiles.
If you want to use ninja, you should call

%mingw_ninja

after %mingw_cmake -G Ninja.

To generate Makefiles, call

%mingw_cmake

without the -G Ninja, and after this

%mingw_make_build

For mingw the more recent "%cmake_build" and "%cmake_install" have never

%cmake_build, and in the %install section use %cmake_install. As
expert neither on cmake nor on mingw, I'm somewhat baffled as to why
there are %cmake_build and %cmake_install macros, but no corresponding
%mingw_cmake_build and %mingw_cmake_install macros. Is there some
equivalent that just happens to not be obvious to me? What I found
worked for both pugixml and zipios was:

original: %cmake; %cmake_build
original install: %cmake_install
added for mingw build:  %mingw_cmake (and did not add anything
equivalent to %cmake_build)

added for mingw install: %mingw_make_install; %{?mingw_debug_install_post)

Unfortunately this simple attempt failed for fmt. The %mingw_cmake
doesn't cause an error, but also doesn't build fmt. The attempted
%mingw_make_install results in: "make: *** No rule to make target
'install'.  Stop." Perhaps this has to do with the fmt build also
using Ninja, which pugixml and zipios do not.

If anyone can offer advice, it would be much appreciated. I started
from the specs from the packages:

pugixml-1.13-4
zipios-2.2.5.0-7
fmt-10.0.0-3

Looks like this was partially merged into rawhide?

Hi,

we have the opposite situation with calibre: it builds fine in rawhide with
podofo-0.10, but does not compile against podofo-0.9.8 in F39. I just
built calibre-7.2.0 in rawhide, and would like to do the same update
for F39. Is there any chance you can also push podofo-0.10.x +
podofo-compat-0.9.x
also to F39? I think that'd be OK, because we can keep the packages that
need the old version building, possibly after adjusting some BuildRequires line.

This needs to be fixed in FindPython.cmake to detect whether cmake is
running in a package build environment to get the correct path.

Though this also concerns the case where I build the application locally
say for development, not necessarily just when building the rpm?
Shouldn't FindPython just always return the rpm_prefix paths, since you
are most-likely attempting to find the system python?

Re: Why does mingw-filesystem depend on mingw-binutils-generic?

2023-08-30 Thread Sandro Mani

Hi

I'd say, as least as it stands now, this is because the dependency
generators require mingw-objdump, see mingw.req [1].

Sandro

mingw-binutils-generic contains a random selection of binaries:

$ rpm -ql mingw-binutils-generic
/usr/bin/mingw-nm
/usr/bin/mingw-objcopy
/usr/bin/mingw-objdump
/usr/bin/mingw-strip

For unclear reasons, mingw32-filesystem depends on
mingw-binutils-generic since this commit:

https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/mingw-filesystem/c/de21385695148a980c81d68396ffc883988fce74

but it's not explained why. It seems off that the base "-filesystem"
package should need these binaries (why these are not others? why at
all?)

It seems like mingw-binutils-generic was added back in 2012 when we
added 64 bit support, and contains "Utilities which are needed for
both the Win32 and Win64 toolchains". Which is fair enough but it's
unclear why they need to be in the filesystem dependencies.

Rich.

Hi

Please check out [1] for a sample unified native/mingw spec with

- Add %{?mingw_debug_package}
- Explicit BR on mingw-binutils probably unnecessary
- Try %global _configure ../configure instead of cloning the entire

- Add %mingw_debug_install_post

I found a problem related with yarnpkg rpm, the macro % __find_requires
finds that yarn scripts uses and needs /usr/bin/node , which is added
to the requires of rpm [1] and this makes yarnpkg pull nodejs (18) even
when nodejs20 is installed .
To avoid this rpm automatic requires, we may add to yarnpkg.spec [2]

[2]
%global __script_requires %{nil}

  [1]
dnf repoquery yarnpkg --available --requires -q
/usr/bin/bash
/usr/bin/node
/usr/bin/sh

I'm not sure what you think is a bug here? Do you think `yarnpkg`
should use *any* nodejs version that's installed? The whole point of
the way this is broken down is that we have a default version (18, in
this case) with the option to install 16 and 20 in parallel, but you
have to do extra work if you want to *use* those non-default versions
(such as patching shebang lines).

This is broken again in rawhide:

$ dnf -qy install yarnpkg
$ ll /usr/bin/node*
lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 7 Apr 28 00:00 /usr/bin/node -> node-20
-rwxr-xr-x. 1 root root 28272 Apr 28 00:00 /usr/bin/node-20
lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root39 Mar 21 00:00 /usr/bin/nodejs-yarn ->
../lib/node_modules_19/yarn/bin/yarn.js

If yarn should be pinned to a node version, please rebuild yarn when
there's a major version change. And it would be nice if there's a
mechanism to detect such a breakage. I.e. a nodejs(abi) version or
something like that.

AFAICS nodejs is generally broken in rawhide (both nodejs20 and
nodejs18), i.e. just

$ node

How to handle updates with large python dependency chains?

2023-05-02 Thread Sandro Mani

Hi

I'm working on packaging pgadmin4-7.0, which bumped several python
dependencies, requiring multiple updates of existing fedora packages. I
started by building newer version of all direct dependencies in copr
[1], and then investigating the dependencies trees of the direct
dependencies. So here come the questions:

- It is kinda hard to know which python dependencies are really
affected. What is the best practice? Just limiting to checking those
which have a version-constrained dependency which would not be satisfied
by the update?

- So far I've filed multiple PRs for the various dependencies, but it is
fairly unrealistic to have these all processed in a timely manner. I'm
assuming the best way forward is a self-contained change?

Thanks
Sandro

Note this is PCRE not PCRE2. Lots of packages, mainly Qt related,
seem to depend on it, and they should move to PCRE2 (packaged as
mingw-pcre2), although this is not a straightforward change.

I suggest we leave this as an orphan, and encourage packages to move
as soon as possible.

There should be no consumers of mingw-pcre left as I believe I've
already moved them all to pcre2? A quick repoquery --whatrequires check

I've done the same with all the mingw packages I maintained just
before Fedora 37 branched. So the following native packages now
just contain mingw sub-RPMs:

  libvirt, libvirt-glib, libosinfo, osinfo-db, osinfo-db-tools, gtk-vnc

I don't know if this is a bug in the spec or in the %find_lang RPM
macro, but I've noticed that these packages have files out of the
mingw sys-root included in the non-mingw packages:

$ find /usr/*mingw32/ -type f | xargs rpm -qf | sort -u
gvnc-1.3.0-5.fc37.x86_64
gvncpulse-1.3.0-5.fc37.x86_64

libvirt-glib-4.0.0-6.fc37.x86_64
osinfo-db-tools-1.10.0-4.fc37.x86_64

All the files in those packages look like:
/usr/{arch}-w64-mingw32/sys-root/mingw/share/locale/{lang}/LC_MESSAGES/{package}.mo

There's a thread on the users list about the existence of
/usr/i686-w64-mingw32/ and /usr/x86_64-w64-mingw32/ directories on
systems without any mingw* packages installed, and it looks like on my
system it's all due to the most recent commits to these packages to
include mingw subpackages.

I suspect the %find_lang macro's shell script
(/usr/lib/rpm/find_lang.sh) needs to know not to include the mingw
sysroot, or at least filter it out as part of the spec file %install.
That is how the files are getting included in the non-mingw subpackages.
They have: %files -n ... -f %{name}.lang in the %files section.

This should be fixed as of [1] (plus [2]). Simply rebuilding the
packages against a current mingw-filesystem should fix the issue.

Re: Self Introduction: Hussein K.

Welcome!

On 16.12.22 15:15, h-k...@hotmail.com wrote:

Hello everyone

This mail should serve as my self introduction to the devel community.

I am a (soon to be) computer science graduate, that has been working
in the Linux / open source world for about 6 years. I first started
working

as a python developer in the GIS (geographic information system) domain.
After some time I also began to perform some system administration tasks.
And before I knew I started to do a bit of everything.
So to describe my current work, I do

- Python development
- System administration
- Kubernetes administration (or whatever you want to call it)
- A little bit of javascript
- Devops (Automatic deployments via CI / CD pipelines, mainly using
Gitlab CI)

Oh, I also picked up rust a couple years ago and have been using it
for Uni and

private projects.

Now the reason for why I want to get more involved in the Fedora
package maintainer community
is because I want to get a better understanding on how applications
are packaged and

distributed to end-users in a secure and stable manner.
And from my experience, the best way to learn, is to get your hands
dirty.
Naturally, I also want to give back to the community, that has doing
amazing
work at developing Fedora and keeping everything working, and I want
to become a part of it.

In the last week, I have been reading a lot of documentation on RPM
packaging

and I have created my first package. I am currently looking for a sponsor
to help me with my first package review:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2154124

This concludes my introduction and I hope this was not too much to
read :D

Best wishes

It comes packed with some UI Apps, that look like something from the

as cgnslib-common is a just a dependency install and the apps are very
special:

/usr/share/applications/cgnscalc.desktop
/usr/share/applications/cgnsnodes.desktop
/usr/share/applications/cgnsplot.desktop
/usr/share/applications/cgnsview.desktop
/usr/share/applications/unitconv.desktop

As I can image someone  could still make use of them, I suggest to
split the package into the ui and none-ui parts.

This way, the depending apps are happy, and users do not get borrowed
with apps they did not want and suddenly popped up

on theire app panel.

Unless you have any specific %ifarch etc, yes.
2. Since mingw packages are considered "noarch" in infrastructure, I
assume there's some magic to prevent arches other than x86_64 from
attempting to build the mingw packages?
Not really, but if builders on separate arches produce different
artifacts for the noarch packages, the build will fail with a
corresponding message like "package XXX built differently on arches YYY"

I would like some clear documentation, that if I'm troubleshooting
either the x86_64 or mingw builds, that it's trivial to disable the
one I'm not working on to speed up build iterations.

You can add

%bcond_without mingw

wrap the %package, %files, and portions inside %build and %install with

%if %{with mingw}
...
%endif

and if you'd like to disable the mingw build, just change the bcond to

%bcond_with mingw

I wonder if we could have the install macros updated to handle this in

Has there been any progress in the investigation?

That corrupted double-linked list in the test suite occurs only on rawhide and
only since some larger side-tags merged. Disabling the test suite permanently
is not a god thing if we think about the py3.11 rebuild, for example, as well
as the upcoming update for mupdf 1.20.0.

That issue has some Heisenbug flavor, by the way, and typically shows up on 50%
of the archs only (but not with a reliable pattern). It does not show up on f36.

Since we cannot work with f37 chroot from before the side-tag merge any more, I
tried with F36 in copr and adding (rebuilding) F37 package versions from the
side-tag one-by-one to narrow down the issue:
https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/coprs/mjg/PyMuPDF-corruption/ (The f37 fails
are the expected ones)

Unfortunately, python-pillow didn't build on s390x (neither on F37 nor F36),
and I don't want to exclude even more arches in the testing ground.

Have you faired better?
Unfortunately not. I had looked into it and despite a rawhide koji i686
build pretty reliably failing, I was not able to reproduce the issue
locally in a i686 rawhide chroot. I've looked into it again now and the
behavior so far is still the same...

Oh ups missed it, I had only checked ssr, thanks for the heads up. FWIW,

Thoughts on updating to scotch-7.x

Hi

Some time ago I've started working on updating to scotch-7.x, with some
initial test builds here [1]. To finalize the update, I'd like to gather
some opinions (potentially affected maintainers in CC):

- Should metis get retired? Scotch has a scotchmetis compatibility
library which is advertised as a faster drop-in replacement for metis,
and indeed ships a metis.h which would conflict with the one from the
original metis package.
- Should I be adding 64-bit index builds for i686? There is a metis64
package, but since i686 is expected to go away soonish, is it worth the
effort? This is of interest to petsc which currently BRs metis64-devel.

Side note: I don't really recall how I ended up maintaining scotch, but
if someone who is actively using the package is willing to step up and
(co-)maintain it, please let me know!

Re: Heads up: openjpeg2-2.5.0 and gdal-3.5.0 coming to rawhide

2022-05-22 Thread Sandro Mani

Hi

I've now merged the side tag. Remarks:

- opencv failed to build due to noarch -doc subpackage building
differently on different arches. This caused by the intel_va sample only
being included on x86 arches. I've made the -doc subpackge arched to
solve this.
- python-PyMuPDF test fail due to a corrupted double-linked list
assertion. I've disabled the test for now, and will investigate further.
- python-fiona test fail due to a segmentation fault. I've disabled the
test for now, and will investigate further.
- gazebo fails to build due to "cannot convert 'ALCdevice*' to
'ALCdevice_struct*' in assignment", which looks like an openal-soft-1.21
incompatibility. Possibly updating gazebo from the currently packaged
v10.1.0 to current upstream version 11.10.2 might help.

Review request: liblerc

2022-05-06 Thread Sandro Mani

Hi

I've packaged liblerc which I'd like to use for the upcoming gdal-3.5.0.
Review request is here [1]. It's a simple cmake/c++ library, and I've
also added the mingw subpackages.

Happy to review in exchange.

Thanks

Sandro

How is the suspend triggered (i.e. by some explicit command, or key press, or

On my part it's a current fedora rawhide with

Re: NodeJS help: updating python-pydata-sphinx-theme

2022-04-11 Thread Sandro Mani
Facing a similar situation a while ago, it was suggested to use a script
like [1] to prepare an offline cache of all dependencies, and point yarn
to that folder in the package spec. Other example is pgadmin4 [2].

Sandro

[1] https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/qgis/blob/rawhide/f/prepare_vendor.sh

handle, but it also comes with a new requirement: using node to build
the theme files (CSS and JavaScript).

I ran a mock build with --enable-network. The build downloaded 759
node modules, all so that it can embed 2 of them (bootstrap and
popper.js) in the theme files. There are only 25 direct node
dependencies (see below), so I assume the other 734 are transitive
dependencies.

The guidelines
(https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/packaging-guidelines/Node.js/)
suggest that I need to add 759 Source tarballs, which is a
non-starter. Is there a realistic way to handle this situation?

It is a complete, cross-compiling, Windows PE building
toolchain[1][2] that uses
llvm instead of gcc. The 'mingw-llvm' package is the llvm backend in
PE form and not

the complete toolchain.

The main llvm package should be capable of this already, as it's a
retargetable compiler. The clang package provides a clang program
that's capable of this.
This makes me wonder, is mingw-llvm actually useful? I took interest
into it way back when I thought it was necessary to get mingw-rust
building, but this turned out not to be the case (resp mingw targets
are now built directly in the main rust package). So any point in
keeping mingw-llvm around?
To add to this: as I understand it's just the llvm backend which could
be used on a Windows host, but serve no purpose in cross-compiling from
linux to mingw?

Hi,

Fedora currently ships Wine 7.3 released February 25th, 2022.

Wine 7.4, released March 11th, started to require a 'llvm-mingw'
compiler for ARM64 builds. Fedora ships the 'mingw-w64' gcc-based
MinGW environment and does not ship the 'llvm' MinGW environment.
Unlike the WineMono package, which bundles a 'llvm-mingw' compiler
(that is removed and mingw-w64 is used), the Wine package does not
bundle one and does not allow for an alternative compiler.

I will need to drop ARM from Wine in order to continue shipping new
updates. I do not have the bandwidth to package the llvm-mingw
compiler toolchain, nor do I have the time right now to discuss this
with upstream.

Hi

Following recent discussions and to reduce the maintenance burden, I'm
planning to start merging native and mingw packages. Initially, I'll be
looking at these packages where I maintain both variants:

Thanks for driving this idea forward, I think it'll be very good for
maintainers in the long run.

I'm performing test builds here [1]. Once I've got them all building there,
if there are no objections, I plan to push to F37 and retire all the
corresponding mingw repos.

Seems to be a 404 - is it marked private perhaps ?

Never mind, I was blinded by the other response into thinking this
was a new thread, where as the orignal mail was actually weeks old.

Right, I already went ahead and merged the work ;) So far I've not seen
any side-effects directly related to unifying the two builds.

What do you feel about native packages depending on MinGW packages?

As far as I can judge, I don't see any problem.

Hi

I'm planing on landing tesseract-5.1.0 and proj-9.0.0 in rawhide and
F36 in the coming days. I'm doing a test run in these COPR repos:

tesseract: https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/coprs/smani/tesseract5/
(all builds already complete)
proj: https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/coprs/smani/proj9/ (starting
now)

Once done there, I plan to move ahead building all of these in a
side-tag for F37 and then F36. Probably some time this weekend to
beginning of next week.

It took me a while to hunt down a python-cartopy test failure [1],
I'll now proceed with the builds in the side-tag f37-build-side-51749.
I won't be pushing this to F36. I'll be building the following packages:

tesseract-5.1.0
proj-9.0.0

and then rebuilding the following dependencies:

[...]

This is now done and the side-tag has been submitted.
