I love media centre too. Whilst you can manage you music happily, and
rip your music with it there is no way to play the squeezebox directly.
Still, i'd love to hear i am wrong...

[slim] J. River Media Center compatibility

2006-04-03 Thread Sasquatch19

This is a question and a call to arms. I see mention on and off about
compatibility between the Squeezebox and J. River Media Center. I love
Media Center, and I am planning on buying a Squeezebox, but I don't want
to use iTunes. Is there a plugin for Media Center to work with
Squeezebox? Ratings, playlist, most played stats, the whol shebang.
Is my only option to use iTunes? If there isn't a solution... then I
would like to put out the offer... mad props to the programmer who
creates one!

Sure, and that's fine if you really do only ever look at the tags. Some
people (myself included) do use the filenames for some things, and in
some cases (e.g. some portable players) you have no choice. I'd always
rather fix bugs than work around them.

Oh and with my pedantic code-reviewer hat on there is the (ever so
slight) risk of data loss here. Consider two files in the same
directories whose filenames differ only in accented characters. I can't
imagine it happening, but I've regretted saying that in the past :)

2006-04-03 Thread pablolie

> ... I completely uninstalled slimserver and installed the

So do I - I go back to 6.2.1 after running into some issue with the
betas. I do understand everything we're being told about beta code etc
- on the other hand, I can't recall those caveats being highlighted on
the "buy now!" page... :-)

With 6.2.1, what works is to create playlists in SS itself. They
disappear here and there, for some reason, but all in all they seem to
make it OK if you abide by the following cardinal rule:

Keep the "My Playlist" folder where SS likes it, and make that the
default. In my case, it's at the same folder hierarchy as the artists
are. I never created the folder, by the way, SS did.

So if you create playlists within SS and have that "My Playlist" folder
as your default, things should work for plalists you save off the SS
menu onn the "right" in your browser. It is constricting, and at times
you have to rescan, but I'll live with the predictable limitation
rather than embracing unpredictability. I am still married, after all.
:-)

*Forget* about creating playlists with Windows Media Player 10, it will
not work. From looking at the M3Us in text format it seems WMP and SS
use different formats. I assume they should be compatible, but aren't.
The SS doesn't seem to like to use line breaks, but on the other hand
is more accurate with the file path (it spells out "G:\Music\Artist",
while WMP like to store "..\Music\Artist\"), but editing will not
overcome the issue.

I'll go for a different programm to create playlists and overall manage
the music collection, but I haven't put my research in yet to decide
what to go for.

[slim] Re: What's the story on accented file names and tag?

2006-04-03 Thread tom permutt

What radish said. Yes, it traverses subdirectories, and "move" means
essentially "rename": you get a new file name in the same directory as
the old one. If you prefer, change "move" to "copy" and it will leave
the old one there, too. And, yes, it changes accented characters to
nothing at all. If you prefer to change them to something, put the
something between the consecutive //. Remember, though, it's only the
filenames that are changing, which you never look at anyway - not the
tags - so you probably don't want to spend a lot of time worrying what
they are renamed to, as long as they play.

[slim] Re: Anyone running Slimserver on a Mac Mini?

2006-04-03 Thread trebejo

davidcotton Wrote:
> So a system comprising a mac mini>wired SB3>usb external hd of any
> make/capacity would work fine?

Yes. I would recommend using firewire instead of USB (about a $10-20
markup on cost per external drive) for two reasons:

1. Firewire daisy-chains in a more straightforward manner.
2. USB hits harder on the cpu.

With only one external drive, and with it dedicated solely to music, it
may be a push between usb and firewire. However, I predict that at some
point in the future you will be tempted to expand the external
connection both in size and function. :)

I was looking into this a few months ago (dear, has it really been only
about three months??), and my last post in this thread is close to where
I ended up:

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=18555

The main difference is that I went with these cases instead,

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817145657

because of their whisper-quiet and efficient fan-cooling systems.

At the moment I've daisy-chained five of these and the performance has
been excellent. Firewire is quirky so we'll see if it holds up on the
scale of years, but if I decide that it's too flaky, I can always take
out the drives and I'm only out the expense of the cases (for which
there will often be some use).

And yes, I went with a mini instead of linux and it ended up being a
1.5ghz g4 with 1 gig of RAM. It's not just the music server, it is also
my desktop machine and I have to work pretty hard to make it do dropouts
on the slimserver (dvd2onex is usually one of the ingredients). As long
as the app is not keen on hijacking the cpu instructions, slimserver
just keeps on running.

One thing that happens is that the refresh page on "Browse Albums"
takes a while (sometimes a minute or two). However that may have
something to do with the size of my collection. :)

The bandwidth off the firewire arrays is currently at about 100-120
MbPS (i.e. 12-13 MBPS), which is huge compared to what is needed for
music (about 60x-100x for flac files). What that means in practice is
that even if you are reading off one of the drives as you play songs,
you can use that drive in all the usual ways such as intensive reading
and writing from it and not have a problem.

[slim] Re: IR Blaster - Xantech Interface

2006-04-03 Thread rock

kdf,
Sorry I'm not sure what you are getting at, your posted URL seems to be
missing a domain.

Bob,
I don't think you understand. Wires are not my problem, but if it is a
diagram you want, then a diagram you shall get.

whatIhaveNow.jpg is, well... what I have now. Well, almost. I only drew
2 zones here (you can extrapolate) and I no longer use a CD changer, I
use a music server, and how I control it is not worth getting into.

The wires connecting the IR receivers to the Xantech connecting block
are indeed CAT5. It doesn't have to be as they only use 3 conductors,
but I got alot of CAT5 laying around.

withSqueezebox.jpg is what I am probably going to do when I get my SBs.
The SB to Xantech circuit are the things in the URL of my post that
started this thread. Nevermind that line level or digital audio has to
run all the way back to the receivers in the basement, that's a whole
other ball of wax that is best left to the other thread I have
running.

So what does this buy me over what I have now, IR wise.
1) The ability to control the receiver with commands sent to the SB,
like turning the receivers on when the SB goes on.
2) I'm going to mount my SBs on the wall, or at least I think I am.
With what I have pictured here I am using the IR receiver of the SB
essentially as the IR receiver of the Xantech system. This means only
one receiver mounted to (and in) the wall, not two.
3) If my SB to Xantech circuit is under $50, then it is a cheaper
receiver than the $50 Xantech receivers.

Forget what I said about the Sonos and "head" and "body" stuff here.
That topic is part of another thread and encompasses more than IR which
I would rather focus on in this thread.

Did you try the new version of MusicIP yet? Sounds like that may be
causing your problems and that's a MUCH better way of fixing it than
changing the files (IMHO).

Oh - and I didn't write this script (and I haven't tested it) but it
looks to me like it just removes all non-ascii characters from
filenames (rather than replacing them). It's up to you whether it's OK
to end up with Rykspp instead of Royksopp :)

Thanks.

I am a Perl/Unix dummy. Could you help with the following?

1. Do you have a link to download and get Perl installed in WinXP?

2. Do I create the file with a text editor? What extension do I name
it with?

3. How do I run it? From command line? Do I specify the directory
path as parameter? Will it fix all the subdirectories in that path?

4. From the above program logic, would it move all the accented and
renamed file to a single directory? And in which case I move it back
to the original directory manually?

Thanks again, this would be really helpful!

Try doing a full rescan with 'clear'. A scan without first clearing
the database may not be sufficient to clear out the old string
capitilaztion.

If that isn't it, then it could be a difficult to find tagging error,
caused by something such as having both id3v1 and id3v2 tags in an mp3
file, or having both id3 and APE tags.

Yeah, I suggested that if he was on an LCD he try tilting it. But on
my monitors (LCD and CRT) it's quite visible at any angle. I suppose I
could try taking another picture. If this really is a one-of-a-kind
failure, I would think SD would want to get their hands on this unit so
they can have an example of a display failure (that perhaps they could
take to their supplier).

The burn-in isn't bad yet, and I could live with it as it is, but I
suspect that the rate of deterioration is going to remain fixed, and if
this is three month's worth of decay, then I'm going to have a pretty
ugly display inside of a year.

I'd say I'm going to be an unhappy customer if they refuse to RMA it,
but that's not true, I'll be an unhappy non-customer if that happens.

Re: [slim] 96 kbps mp3 won't play on my Slimp3

2006-04-03 Thread Bruce Tucker
Something is funny with the way playlists are (not) being handled on my
system. For example, here's a playlist kbcs2.pls that I've been trying to
play:

[playlist]
File1=http://www.live365.com/play/kbcs2
Title1=kbcs
Length1=1
NumberOfEntries=1
Version=2

when I select this with my Slimp3 or Softsqueeze, I get a "playlist empty"
message.
If I cut and paste http://www.live365.com/play/kbcs2 into the Tune In to
Radio URL it plays with no problem on SoftSqueeze.

If I tune in with my SliMP3, I have the same problem as before: the SliMP3
play counter increments, I get no sound (or I get a loud click at the start
and then nothing.) This stream is 96kbps and I have checked my SliMP3 with
other 96 streams (out of Shoutcast) and they play.

Is there something wrong with Live365? the formatting of this pls? my
server?

That's strange. It's quite clear to me, both on a CRT and an LCD.
However, the clarity on the LCD varies depending on my viewing angle.
At a normal angle it appears about like on my CRT. If I tilt the top
of the display away from me the effect becomes more pronounced, but the
opposite happens if I tilt it toward me. So perhaps your contact was
using an LCD at a sub-optimal angle. Other monitor settings could
probably mess it up as well.

Like I said in this and my other post, I've gone the wireless handheld
route before, I'm trying to simplify. I like the SB as a controller,
and I like it as a device to stream audio two as directed by that
controller. Now if those two functionalities were in different boxes
(but the functionality between them still linked) AND I could pass my
IR signals from controller to remote streamer where it could then be
blasted at my remote receiver / amps (I still need FM) I'd be happy.

AND all of the above can be done over CAT5. Wireless has it's place
and it ain't on fixed mounted devices (IMHO).

I shoulda combined this with my other post...

Actully this is the inverse of my application. I want to use the SB as
a contoller. I have no desire to purchase a Nokia 770 or other web pad.
I've actually gone this route before and am trying to simplify.

I've got the whole "how to control thing" down. My problem is getting
the control signal (and the audio signal, but that's another story) to
the device to be controlled. They are located away from each other.
I've already go the Xantech system in place and could buy the ir
blaster from Slim and mate it with my Xantech receiver in a big ball of
electrical tape, but that seems less than elegant. If I can make a neat
little interface from the blaster out port on the SB (yes, I know this
is also the headphone jack) to the receiver port on the Xantech
connector block (remember the wiring is already in place) I can also
save the cost of Xantech receivers in the future.

How do you ir controll your diff. zones now?

As you have seen, the SB hardware and Slimserver OS is quite
extensible. Sit back think out of the box with your current setup.
There are a miriad of ways to control your SB/Slimserver network. I
thought that I would quickly move to a wireless handheld gui for my SB.
I have been very contenet with the SB interface. With Slimserver I
can sync my internet radio stations across my zones. Oddly FM
reception is spotty at my house.

[slim] Re: IR Blaster - Xantech Interface

2006-04-03 Thread kefa

surely this is where we roll on with a wi-fi head such as nokia 770 (or
the new mobile phones that are about to grace us with their presence)
to control any ir devices via the squeezebox. With this in mind I have
created a plug-in that enables any ir device (cd player, amp, tv,
etc)to be controlled using the irblaster plug-in and output.

at the moment the plugin requires the IRBlaster plugin to be installed
with the appropriate remote *.conf files (these can be created for any
remotes using the 'learning' facility available with the plugin from
Slimserver v6.2.2).

It also requires an HTML template file to be manually modified with the
button layout and commands required for your remote, but this should be
pretty straightforward if you have more had more than a sniff of HTML
experience. Just modify the appropriate section in the following file:

WebIRRemote/HTML/Default/plugins/WebIRRemote/index.html

(scroll down to the comment lines that start with // for instructions)

There are probably a few things to be ironed out, someone with plug-in
expereience could probably point me in the right direction as to adding
some appropriate checks and balances. However, for me it all works fine.
To-do is to remove the need to edit the HTML template and make the
layout manually configurable from within the web interface itself (much
like within the IRBlaster plugin configuration).

Anyway the following image should provide you with an overview of
what's possible:

[image: http://www.avdv70.dsl.pipex.com/webirremote/image.gif]

and the the following url provides a download of the plug-in itself:

http://www.avdv70.dsl.pipex.com/webirremote/webirremote.zip

Isn't this a case for the "Jump back on wake" option? There's another

where you came from. And my MusicInfoSCR does it as well ;-)

And this got me wondering, why is there a "Now Playing" menu option,

Why the favorites button? Search? Volume? Everything's there in the menus.
But it's so painful to go there manually.

There's the rub. I think for $200 (yep I got two during last month's
sale) the SB is dandy little control unit. The speaker wire is run, but
I have no intention of purchasing Nokia web pads.

The alternative would be to use 2 of the unused wires (assuming I could
do this with a differential transmitter) in the cat5 bundle to send the
digital audio down to my amps with converter dongles like PoE uses. All
my Cat5 is home run, so this is doable, but then I'd need outboard DA
units which can get cost prohibitive.

And while I'm at it run power over the last two wires in the
bundle, although I think most PoE systems double up on the conductors.

And lastly like I said, I'm spoiled. I want this thing all running
within 10 minutes of hooking it all up like the SB.

[slim] Re: IR Blaster - Xantech Interface

2006-04-03 Thread rock

Bob,

My "4 zone amp" is actually 4 separate receivers. They sit in my
basement and speaker wires run to remote locations. For control at
those remote locations I use the remotes that came with the receivers
over a Xantech 4 zone system.

In the old days I had a CD changer as my common source. I like having
individual receivers as zone amps as I still like to listen to FM.

Enter the SqueezeBox.

If the SB had a "head" and "body" unit like the Sonos (or if I could
buy a Sonos head and body unit for $200!) and also relayed IR signals
(see my other thread) I wouldn't be writing this. So you can see where
I am headed.

There are multiple ways to accomplish what I want, I'm just trying to
figure out the best options to get there.

As far as I know you can run as many copies of SqueezeSlave as you
want, and Richard has added (or is going to add) the ability to
specify the audio device to use for each. I'm not quite sure why you
want the physical SqueezeBox device to control SqueezeSlave - maybe
I'm misunderstanding your intent? Usually SS allows you to do away
with having a physical SB, as long as you are prepared to run speaker
wire and use a Nokia or similar to control it all.

rock,

In the summer of 02 (this was pre SB) I hooked up my system as
follows.

Upstairs AV closet.
Harmon Kardon (HK) avr 320
HK pa 4000
xantech 291-kit (http://xantech.com/products/p_folder/p_291kit.htm)

Zones downstairs.
HK kp 1 (wall key pad) for each zone
xantech 490 microlink receiver for kp 1

For the moment I have 2 SB2s.
One hooked to a Cabmbridge Soundworks CD Radio
and the other into my AV closet upstair for multi-zone audio.

While my focus has not been to use my SB to pass IR info (I did not
know of the plug-in till your post) to my amp and system, I should be
able to replicate your setup.

I am using a combination of 'Music Sense' and keypad controls to turn
on music to my zones. Does your amp have any similar features?

Now a headless device I'd think you could forgo the wireless, the
application would be a centralized amp system. If someone took the
trouble to run speaker wires to remote locations it would seem pretty
easy to pull Cat-5 over. But we're only talking the difference of the
cost of the display so you are probably right about the cost
efffectiveness. Now if there could be a headless system that could do
four different streams, to four different amps that might be more
effective.

For a head only unit, I don't see how you could do it any cheaper so
another product wouldn't make sense.

That all being said, if there is a way for one Squeezebox to control
what stream is fed to another Squeezebox (admittedly I haven't looked)
I could accomplish what I want to with existing hardware. I could use
the exisiting displays on my headless wannabes to send encouraging
thoughts to my amplifiers.

I am actually asking for another device here, not a modification to the
existing Squeezebox. In my application my amps (and FM tuners) sit in a
rack (in one location) and feed out to the rest of the house. I'd like
the Squeezebox to receive IR from the FM tuner remote, pass it down to
the Slim server machine and blast right out of there to control the
tuners. Now with some coding and the hardware in my original post this
could proabably be done. But you've spoiled me, I'm looking for a
solution as physically elegant and easy to set up as the Squeezebox
itself.

Hi Tim,

1: there are a massive number of regular expression primers out there.
Googling for "regular expression primer" will turn up more sites than
you can shake an expression at.

2: There's a couple of ways of doing this, depending on how much you
want to play with it.Without a regular expression:
Create a 'Format Value' action in MP3Tag that sets ArtistSort to a
calculated value, using the built-in scripting functions in MP3Tag.
Take a look at
http://www.mp3tag.de/en/help/main_scripting.html
>From this, you should be able to use
$strchr(x,y)
with
$left(x,n)
to get the first and second words in %ARTIST%, and put it all together
to get a new value for %ARTISTSORT%.

A more elegant solution would be to use the 'replace with regular
expression', but again, you'll have to play with it a bit. Basically,
create a two-part action:
1. Set ArtistSort equal to Artist
2. 'replace with regular expression':
Field: %ARTISTSORT%
Regular Expression: ^(.+)\s(.+)$
Replace with: $2, $1

[slim] Re: Customize Fishbone

2006-04-03 Thread evanhood

For anyone who wants to change the text and or button sizes of a skin,
here's what I found worked. (although the quality of the button
scaling isn't so hot, it is functional)

edit the skin.css file in the directory of the skin you want to
change.

To modify the size of the body font, change the "TD, P, A" section's
font-size value. I found that 14 worked nicely on my 1280x1024 flat
panel.

To modify the button size you need to add "height" and "width" values
to the ".browsedbControls img, .playlistControls img" section. I
specified "15" for these.

If you don't increase the font size then you'll need to increase the
size of the space between lines which can be done by adding a height
value to ".browsedbListItem", making it slightly larger than the height
of the control graphics.

Figured I'd just pass this along to anyone else who knows squat about
CSS's and doesn't want to wade through the trial and error I just did.

Enjoy.

I think your first two have been sugested before. Personaly i can't see
them happening. I would guess that two of the bigest cost componets are
the processor/decoder module and the wirless interface, both of which
you would need for either a headless or head only device.

I may be missing what you mean by the third request, but i believe the
SB already has the ability to pass IR codes to the server for it to
pass onto other applications. It can also server as an IR transmitter
by plugging a lead into the headphone port. Other will be albe to

[slim] Wish List

2006-04-03 Thread rock

I don't even have my Squeezebox yet (as I've mentioned in a different
thread) and I'm already making demands! But since the Slim Devices
product devlopment folks monitor these groups (which is very cool) what
the heck...

1) A headless (no display) Squeezebox. Combine that with a Nokia web
pad and it's a Sonos killer.

2) A head (display) only Squeezebox that connects to the headless unit
above and it's a Sonos and Nokia killer. Ok, fine it doesn't quite kill
the Nokia web pad, but I'm an old Unix guy and like everything command
line. If it can't be done on a VT-100 I don't want it!

3) A USB IR blaster interface that has multiple (maybe 4) zones that
are adressable on a per Squeezebox basis. Plug it into the computer
running Slim server and it's a Xantech killer. From a hardware
perspecive there are these things:
http://www.promixis.com/products.php?section=usbuirt&source=froogle
But $50 per zone, not to mention the unweildy USB cables strung all
over with multiple units seems less than elegant.

[slim] IR Blaster - Xantech Interface

2006-04-03 Thread rock

After searching I see there are threads with a similar theme, however I
started a new one to jump start this discussion again.

First off, I don't yet have my Squeezeboxe(s). They are on order and I
now regret not upgrading to faster shipping as I am all fired up. I've
got Slimserver running and I've played around with Softsqueeze to the
point where I've written some experimental plugins. My point is that
many of my questions below can be answered with some simple hardware
experimentation, but I thought I'd get a bit of a jump start.

I'd like to link the Squeezebox IR system in with my existing Xantech
system to 1) pass along IR commands and have Squeezebox act like my
Xantech IR receiver; and 2) so I can have Squeezebox turn on my already
remote amp.

I'm guessing that the IR blaster plugin is capable of "passing along
commands" from what I've read. I'm also guessing that Squeezebox can
use my Xantech IR flashers as long as I do the stereo - mono mini jack
translation (although in the long run this will not be relavant, but I
may need this for experimentation). And I'm making a third guess that
the Squeezebox IR system is a 5V one.

If the above is correct I suspect I could link the IR blaster output of
the Squeezebox to a receiver input of my Xantech system with the circuit
on page 4 of this doc.

http://toddjreed.home.comcast.net/ToddsHAproject.pdf

Now given that I'll probably use the analog outputs of the Squeezebox,
unless I can find an economical (read cheap) DA converter to send the
audio all the way back to the amp, I'm not thrilled with sharing a
ground between the systems. I could easily mod an optoisolator into the
above circuit, but I also found this:

http://tinyurl.com/qyzfg

which looks like it may be just the ticket.

So bottom line, anyone have experience with what I propose doing?

FYI there is a recent beta of MusicIP which seems to sort out the
issues with accented files (at least for me) in that the files show up
in Music IP once (unaccented) and once in Slimserver (with full accents
in place) - no duplicate copies of or missing files and best of all, I
can use Foobar to apply replaygain with annoying little boxes appearing
at the start of every tag.

If you go to the MusicIP forums you can subscribe to their beta list.
I don't use Itunes.

Assuming from your IE reference that you're using Windows, you might

I find it does a much better job scaling web pages than changing IE's

di Figaro-Non so più cosa son, cosa faccio.FLAC, the song does not show
up in Slimserver.

2. If I have accented characters in a tag, the song shows up in
Slimserver web interface but the songs wont play. The SB2 says file
not found.

BTW I am running 6.5b1 - 6338 - Windows XP - EN - cp1252, and
MusicMagic latest.

This is highly annoying, anybody knows the best way to fix it short of
retagging and/or renaming close to 10,000 songs in 1,000 albums?

[slim] Re: Qnap TS-101 Update

2006-04-03 Thread ultra238a

Hi Andrew,

The Squeezeboxes on the network get the time from the local server, in
this case the TS-101. There is a bug in the TS-101 firmware that Qnap
are working on currently working on. At installation I set the clock to
update from the NTP server once an hour which keeps it pretty much
accurate. Obviously this won't be needed when they fix this time
issue.

Thanks

Paul,

Only a completely different TS-101 subject, where does SS get its clock
tick from ?

I am asking this because the time shown on my SBs drifts out
significantly throughout the day.

I have setup the TS-101 to get a time sync from an NTP server once a
day, but between these it can be upto 10 mins or more out.

Any ideas ?

Regards,

Andrew.

p.s. This shows you how happy I am with my setup when all I have to

Uninstalling and reinstalling worked. Before I uninstalled I looked in

reinstalled I chose the option to always run or run when windows

I've no idea - that's a completely wacky figure. At 10p/kWH (pulling
from my distant memory of UK power prices) that's something like 800W.
In reality, figure about 100W MAX (probably less given that it's idle
most of the time), which is 24p a day (or 90 quid a year). Even
assuming the ReadyNAS uses half the power of a PC (45W was quoted
earlier), you're looking at 3 or 4 years just to break even.

But then again, a P4 would hardly be my choice for a power efficient
server platform :) A nice cool Athlon XP, or Sempron, or even Celeron
would work just fine. Mine's an Athlon XP with no video, no sound,
thermal fans (rarely speed up) and a bunch of drives. I haven't
measured it (one day I will) but I'd be astonished if it were over
100W.

Yep, see _'bug_2068'
(http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2068)_. I've realised that
my PC -is- making it into Standby after the specified time, but only for
about half a second - it gets woken up again almost instantly by the
SB's network traffic. However, if there's no subsequent HD activity (ie
I'm not playing anything on the SB), it tries to go into Standby again a
few minutes later - and wakes up again straight away - and this
continues, every few minutes, ad nauseum. I imagine this is pretty
unhealthy for the PC (particularly the hard drives).

Hopefully the bug will be resolved soon (which reminds me, I should
vote for it!) but until then, I have to work around it by preventing
the PC from becoming 'inactive', if my SB is getting power but not
actually being used. I've contemplated trying to use the Execute Script
or PowerSave plugins to generate some HD activity when the SB is idle,
but not actually done anything yet ;)

MS-RDP and X are both faster in my experience on the LAN. Remotely, X
falls off fast, but RDP is still the quicker solution. I've used RDP
successfully by Webexing from Berkeley to Dallas and RDP'ing from Dallas
to Tokyo, while I've had VNC be unusable between a DSL line in Berkeley
and a DSL line in San Jose.

I'm sure I was just unlucky and there are many users happily using VNC
over three cantenna wireless links and a strand of electrified barbed
wire from Seattle to Chicago, but I went seeking alternatives and found
them. I've had to use VNC at a couple of customer sites in the last few
years and it doesn't seem to have improved, but I'm sure the latest
version fixed anything.

To get vaguely back toward topic, this is maybe illustrative of the
issues some people have with product quality.

What codec (flac, mp3, ogg, etc.) will you use? Drive size keeps

You might want to give TightVNC a try, it sports some performance
improvements over the original AT&T version.

I have.

Also, your howto seems to improperly characterize VNC. Perhaps I'm
mis-reading but you seem to imply that the VNC viewer and server trade
packets continuously regardless of activity. That isn't the case, they
only trade packets when there are events to share (such as mouse
movements or screen updates). An idle VNC session uses no bandwidth.

I haven't watched Tight with a sniffer, but AT&T VNC definitely polls.

Additionally, you indicate that a VNC context is limited in size and
pixel depth to the specs of the video card attached to the server
hosting it. This is not the case, VNC contexts can be of arbitrary
dimesions and quantity regardless of any video hardware that may or may
not be attached to the hosting computer (given enough memory, of
course).

That might be a new feature, but it's still not as cool in my mind than
X. Anyway, VNC has its place and I'm sure that Tight offers lots of
benefits that I didn't notice the last few times I tried it. It was
still a lot slower than RDP or X, so I didn't care to hang around and
find out what those benefits were.

With the same source data (ie the same ripped wav fine) any lossless
format will* sound identical to any other. in my mind the only format
you can be sure of being truly lossless is FLAC because it is open
source and because slim device know exactly what is happening at any
point of playing a FLAC file. ALAC and WMALossless is being decoded by
a third party decoder, so unless these are also open source there is no
garantee they aren't doing something funny behind the scenes. Call me
paranoid but that the way i look at it :)

*there are reasons why this might not be 100% true.
1) the codec isn't actualy a true lossless codec
2) the encoder has a bug
3) the decoder has a bug
4) the decoder is adding some digital processing before passing the
data to slimserver

[slim] Re: Qnap TS-101 Update

2006-04-03 Thread Andy_W

Hi All

Not satisfied with streaming music flawlessly to my SB3, I have now
configured the Qnap for external file access, which is a really useful
feature for me. Thanks to Paul for guiding me through it.

All you need to do is open some ports on your router and point the open
ports to the Qnap LAN address. (I will post the list of ports I used if
anyone wants to try this). You also need to change your adminsitrator
password to something difficult to guess as this will technically be
available across the web. Also you need to change the internal settings
to deny guest access. If you use the password "guest", anyone can get
full access to your Qnap and this is the default. Once you change this
to administrator only, even if you try to access the Qnap by drive
letter, it asks for a password. This is really useful to prevent anyone
deleting your music files if multiple users share the network.

Then you need to get a domain name (URL) by registering your ISP IP
address you use for external access at www.dyndns.com It's free and it
means that if your ISP changes the IP address, the URL will still point
to the right IP number.

All you do then is type in your newly created URL and your Qnap front
page should appear. If you select any of the services, it will ask you
for the password. Just log in and you're there!

The only problem I have is the university where I work use Novell
border manager (ugh) and this blocks the Qnap log in screen, but the IT
dudes are going to adjust it for me.

Anyone wants any more info, post and I will reply.

PS Mark Norton: Stop moaning and badmothing Paul. He provides an
enormous amount of support in trying to address Qnap perfomance issues
and should not have to waste energy defending himself to arrogant and
opinionated individuals. If you want a benchmark for rubbish customer
service call Sky or buy something from Dell!
