IMHO wireless just isn't robust enough to stream lossless audio. I've

cordless phone or the microwave. I also found signal strength variable
for no apparent reason. After a few weeks I couldn't live with the
dropouts any longer and went wired - there's nothing worse than being
in the middle of a really great playlist/song only to have it
interrupted by silence or garbled sound.

[slim] Re: Thecus N5200 - fastest NAS available

2006-08-23 Thread tommypeters

OK, then use a *wired* router in another room... The message was that
the NAS shouldn't be placed where you're sitting listening.

Mileage May Vary - I have two SB3 and the one in the kitchen sometimes
has drop-out problems (even sans micro) while the one connected to my
main Hi-fi/Home Cinema system never had any problems even though we
have 5 cordless phones. Both SB3 are on a different floor from the
router.

So I'm also looking for a wired solution - can possibly route a CAT5e
through the wall/floor downstairs - otherwise it will be the PowerPlug
type of using the electrical wires.

[slim] Remote streaming problem

2006-08-23 Thread bugs

Hi all,
I have 2 Squeezeboxes at home Slim Server 6.2.1 on XP. All works well
as it has done for quite a few years.
I've just starting playing with remote streaming for the first time,
and have run into a problem.
I can browse the server fine remotely, and also stream mp3 files.
However, when I try to play an AAC file, Slim just simply won't play it
(ie the display won't change from 'stopped' to 'playing').
Is this a limitation, or is there a fix? I'm using the
http://hostname/stream.mp3 link (maybe there's a clue there ;-)
Cheers,

Thanks for that.
It's not a connectivity issue, as I can stream mp3s fine. In fact I'm
using a static IP and forwarding port 80 - 9000 on my router.

Sounds like the LAME thing might be the problem though. Is that a
specific requirement for streaming, as I can obviously play the AAC
files OK through the Squeezeboxes.

2006-08-23 Thread davep

I do this all the time but the key is to make sure that your remote
player (I use Softsqueeze) is set to use bitrate limiting. I find that
with an average quality internet connection I can get away with 160k
but sometimes have had to go down to 128k. If you don't do this SS
will try to stream the file at its original size and this usually
chokes the network connection.

Hiya,
Problem seems to be before any streaming starts. When I'm browsing the
Slim interface remotely, I physically can't make it start playing an
AAC file. MP3s just play as expected. It's almost as though there's a
problem at the server end - which I guess from above is the LAME
thing???

Are you picking up any hum from the power line?

Are there any power lines near the interconnects? If they pick up a
hum, the hum will prevent an auto-off amp from going into standby.
This used to happen with my subwoofer.

If you have to be near power lines, cross them at right angles - don't
parallel them for more than a few inches.

2006-08-23 Thread bpa

You can only stream MP3 to non-SoftSqueeze players such as Winamp. To
create the MP3 stream from your AAC file you need to install Lame which
is an MP3 encoder.

You also need to specify the maximum remote bitrate for the player -
this will trigger the use of Lame to transcode the AAC stream into MP3.

Well, just a minute or 2 after moving the MP3 player the speakers went
into standby. Having powered it all off and back on, then after
playing some music powering the MP3 player on again the speakers are
still live after 22 minutes.

It may well be that they take an hour to go into standby, which if it's
consistent isn't a major deal - I can understand why a long delay was
chosen, bound to be kinder on the electronics.

I'll have a better idea in another 50 minutes :)

2006-08-23 Thread Mark Lanctot

It's not a known bug, but it may indicate the router is clogging up -
insufficient resources to handle the LAN stream.

I realize it's a pretty high-spec router but bittorrent isn't
especially intensive on the server, just on the router.

Try wiring the SB (temporarily) to the router - I believe LAN traffic
ought to be lighter on the router than WLAN. Or if you have an old
router or switch lying around, try that.

part of the reason i'm not too concerned, is that i gather 6.5 is

when 6.5 comes out, and i've had it long enough to see how it all

Yup, it's about an hour from the last music being played to standby.
I'd rather it was less, but given how rarely it'll be an issue I'll
live with it.

Where I found them - last ones, on clearance :) A quick Google shows
that www.microdirect.co.uk has them for just under £60. Sound quality
is good, but they are a little large.

As for it being a $300 alarm clock - I'm fed up of forgetting to
set/cancel alarms, of changing the time twice a year, of the time/alarm
being forgotten after the power goes out, of having to remember to turn
the volume down after I've been listening so I don't have a heart
attack when it wakes me up... Oh, and I'm a geek and like my toys :)

Besides, the other half keeps muttering about how nice it would be to
be able to watch TV or listen to music when she's in bed. Now I've got
half the problem solved...

[slim] Annoying menu navigation ( now playing)

2006-08-23 Thread topa

Hi all!
I'm really annoyed by the navigation within the menu of the squeezebox,
which irrelevantly keeps displaying now playing. Can this be changed
somehow, or am I too stupid?

Let me explain when this occurs and why it's so annoying:

To play a song, I go into search artist, click right, pick an artist
and play his song. Fine! But now I want to pick another artist next, and
play his song. So, I hit the left (=back) button. But instead of
returning to the search artist menu which I'de find logic, I end up
in the stupid now playing menu although I know perfectly well what's
playing as I just left that menu on the way back and in search of the
next artist!!! Now I have to again take the detour of pressing down
and start out new from search artist.

Thanks for your help,
Regards,
Tobi.

[slim] Re: Annoying menu navigation ( now playing)

2006-08-23 Thread topa

Thanks!
I'll have a look at your homepage.

However I noticed a different Menu issue with my SB3 now:

If I press fwd within an Album to play the next song, the next track
will only display very briefly (1sec) and then the display jumps back
to the previous track, whilst playing the new one.

Then it takes a while until the Screensaver you gave me kicks in, and
it then displays the correct info to the track playing. Strange...

Tobi.

[slim] Re: MySQL on 6.5b1

2006-08-23 Thread jeffluckett

Greetings,

I've just installed 6.5b1 - 9122 on my server box.

I was hoping to access the embedded mySQLd via sqlYog from a remote
machine, but it seems that it doesn't accept network connections. (I am
able to access it with sqlYog installed on the same machine, however).

Does anybody here know how I can either A) configure the embedded mysql
to allow network connections or B) configure SlimServer to use my
already installed MySQL on that machine ... which already allows
network connections...

I've tried to change the .pref file to connect to my already installed
MySQL, but it chokes saying the .pref file is corrupt...

I found that you _must_ edit the my.tt file. If you edit the my.cnf
file in the Cache folder then your changes will be overwritten.

Stop and restart SlimServer after making the above change. You should
look in your Windows task manager to make sure the mysqld.exe process
also stops. If it doesn't, kill it from the task manager.

[slim] Re: Change the order when browsing artwork?

2006-08-23 Thread aubuti

I like the way the sorting artwork/list format are implemented in 6.5.
It's pretty slick on the default and handheld skins (haven't tried
Fishbone lately). But I was surprised that the Nokia770 skin doesn't
seem to follow the same model. I've skimmed and searched the forums and
haven't found whether the Nokia skin is eventually going in that
direction or not. Or is it already implemented and I'm just missing
something obvious?

FYI, I'm running 6.5b1 - 9034 - Debian - EN - utf8.

Thanks!

Question: Do you have a 770?

- Got it
- Want it
- Need it
- Forget it

Ben: Thanks for all your work on this skin -- it's great even without a
770. Sorry if this has already come up, but here's a feature request
that I haven't found when skimming this thread.

Several of my albums don't have album art yet, so when I browse by
album art (configured to show placeholders) it shows the file folder
silhouette with a big question mark. Would it be possible to also show
a popup with the album info when one mouses over the placeholder, the
same way that the default and handheld skins do? That would be a very
nice touch.

And again, sorry if it's already in this thread and I've missed it, but
what are the three numbers in the lower left corner? Mine usually say
0,0,0.

This is slimserver 6.5b1 - 9034 - Debian - EN - utf8, viewed using
Firefox in WinXP. Thanks!

6.5 does require mysql. I would have expected the rpm to have the dependancies to call for this.

Unfortunately, I'm not an rpm user. I'll have to leave that one for someone else to answer, unless you already know how to find and install a required rpm for yourself. You'll need Mysql 5.0.2 or higher I believe.

[slim] Re: ESPN Radio

2006-08-23 Thread Bruce S .

I just realized that ESPN radio won't be what I need for MNF. I need
Westwood One which covers the game on radio.

Is a station that offers a podcast one that I can use squeezebox for,
because Westwood One does?

You may want to bring this up on the beta forum. There are people who can help you there who no longer take part in the general discussion forum

[slim] Re: ESPN Radio

2006-08-23 Thread Victor

FYI, Sirius Radio broadcasts all the NFL games. I tried to listen to
satellite (since Joe Theisman could make baby Jesus weep with his inane
ramblings) while watching a game last week. Didn't have much luck.
Sirius seems to be about 4-6 seconds behind (time-wise) live
television. That made it pretty impossible to listen to while I
watched.
