[slim] Anyway to update firmware without SB remote?

2006-10-22 Thread victoriousone

Hi all. I just acquired an SB1 unit without remote via the local
Goodwill store. I have a universal remote with the JVC DVD codes and
it works fine to let me configure the setup, however, there is no
brightness key on the remote so I am unable to update the firmware.
I'd probably be willing to shell out the $30 ($19 + $11 shipping) for a
replacement remote if I knew whether this thing worked or not.

Anyone know if there is an alternate way to begin a fw update using a
JVC compatible remote?

Thanks in advance for any help.

[slim] Re: Logitech to acquire Slim Devices!

2006-10-22 Thread stevieweevie

I was expecting something like this for the past few months as there is
no way that SD have financial clout to market their products long-term
on a worldwide basis.

After the loss of http://www.meedio.com I was very concerned to see
this thread in the General Discussion Forum. It seems my initial fears
were unfounded. I hope that Logitech keep to the SD winning formula,
and can bring thier manufacturing, financial, and marketing clout to
raise the profile of the SD Products.

It is clear that things will change for SD - but realistically without
a substancial partner or acquisition, I am sure that SD's days would
have been numbered.

So - congrats to the SD Team and congrats to Logitech guys - I look
foward to new SD Products*

[slim] Re: Wishlist: wall pack SB

2006-10-22 Thread Squirrel

I thought about this already... in fact I vaguely remember suggesting it
on here at one point.

Yes, I'd kill for a Squeezebox that would simply fit onto a dual-gang
UK electrical back box. Network cabling could simply terminate on IDCs,
with recessed phono sockets for audio/SPDIF out and perhaps a low
profile 2-pin connector for power. This could form the basis of a
permanent installation.

I'd have one for my kitchen and bathroom!

The other thing I'd like to see is a standard SB in 17 hi-fi
separate form factor. The Transporter looks stunning - but I already
have an Arcam AVR-250 with a seriously high quality DAC in it.

[slim] Wishlist: Co-development with hi-fi manufacturers

2006-10-22 Thread Squirrel

Just a thought... but now Logitech owns Slim Devices they might have
more clout.

Several well known hi-fi manufacturers make some pretty decent
all-in-one units, eg Denon, Arcam (the Solo), as well as some of the
cheaper HTIB (Home Theatre In a Box) systems.

I'd propose that it's worth Slim/Logitech approaching these companies
with a view to building Squeezebox client functionality into these
devices. It shouldn't add much to the cost - all these units already
have a VFD and MP3 decoding hardware.

That way SB can integrate totally into the living room hi-fi without
any need for extra boxes.

Philips do something similar with the Streamium system, but this uses a
proprietary protocol. The SlimServer protocol is open and documented,
and adoption of this wouldn't tie you to one make of hi-fi throughout
the house.

Comments anyone?

Yes, I agree. I share some of the concerns others have expressed about
Logitech.

But I also had concerns about SlimDevices. Mostly that a small company
selling a niche product could easily cease trading, for instance it
might get into a financial mess through trying to expand too fast.

I was dithering about whether to buy a SliMP3, partly because of this.
Fortunately I dithered long enough for the SB1 to come along, and now I
am happily using my SB2, though mainly for radio - BBC LIsten Again or
BBC shows I have recorded.

[slim] Three MusicMagic Questions

2006-10-22 Thread dip

I just started to detect MusicMagic (MusicIP 1.7.1 with Slimserver
6.5.1) and have the following three questions:

1. In MusicMagic I have changed the number of tracks to be included in
a MusicMagic Mix to 30. However in Slimserver the MusicMagic Mixes are
still created with 12 tracks only. Isn't that number not taken from the
MusicMagic settings? If not, where can I adjust this value?

2. In MusicMagic I can select multiple tracks to be the basis for a
MusicMagic Mix. In Slimserver (and in particular with my squeezebox) I
can only use one track as basis. Is there a way to create a MusicMagix
Mix based on more than one track in Slimserver and in particular also
with my squeezebox using the remote?

3. Is there any advantage for squeezbox users to buy the premium
version of MusicIP? I did not find a description about the
differences.

Thanks a lot for any suggestions from experienced MusicMagic users.

[slim] Re: Three MusicMagic Questions

2006-10-22 Thread dip

I just found the answer to item 1. All MusicMagic options can be set in
the player options (plugin page).

So I only need answers for items 2. and 3.

[slim] Album name issues in 6.5.0

2006-10-22 Thread CardinalFang

Has anyone got a workaround for albums with the same names being merged
in browse by album name? I get all my albums like Greatest Hits
appearing merged together as one album with all the artists listed
instead of discrete albums for each one.

They are all Apple Lossless and I'm on iTunes 7.

Thanks.

In fact, the last time they tried to sue AllOfMP3.com was not even based
on the prices and royalties - it was because they (The British
Phonographic Industry - BPI) claimed they contribute to piracy. In
other words, the lack of DRM. Well 99% of CD's are sold DRM free, so
will they sue themselves too?

You can take other browseable itmes like artists, albums, playlists as
seed. If you want to pick a few particular songs, you can always select
them in MIP, create a mix and send them to Slimserver using the Send To
button (click right).

3. Is there any advantage for squeezbox users to buy the premium

Not for me as I'm using MIP only as a mixer for Slimserver.

[slim] Problem with radio station .ram file that contains comments

2006-10-22 Thread laurieY

I am able to play most radio stations that I want with either AlienBBC
or Tune In URL. There is one I'm having problems with it seems to be
associated with a .ram file that contains url's that have been commented
out by the station. (presumably the commented out rows are old values).
With some debugging it appears that scanPlaylistFileHandle finds 3
valid items in the playlist, i.e. even the two that were commented out.
slim then tries to play the first (invalid) item.
The relevant lines in debug are :
scanPlaylistFileHandle: found 3 items in playlist:
rtsp://a536.l1351638535.c13516.e.lr.akamaistream.net/live/D/536/13516/v0001/reflector:38535

The url I am using is
http://www.canalsur.es/Informativos/EmisionesDirecto/CanalFiesta.ram

Should the comment lines be ignored in a .ram file if so is there a
way I can get slim to do it or should I be raising a bug?

p.s. I can play that .ram file with realplayer the underlying url
(3rd one ) plays ok.

Logitech already make speakers - It seems likely the first new product
to come out of the new slim-logitech entity will be a one box
squeezebox + speakers unit. I doubt they will see the need to involve
another manufacturer. It will be interesting to see what kind of form
factor they come up with. I hope it's similar to the bose wave radio,
or the creative soundworks equivalent:
'Creative soundworks'

Rather than something like the roku or acoustic energy products, with
both look quite poor imho:
'Roku Soundbridge radio'
'AE wifi radio'

Whatever it looks like, I'm pretty sure I'll buy one for the bedroom. I
currently have an SB3 connected to some 'AEGO M speakers'
which sounds great, but there's too many cables for my liking.

[slim] Re: How to find missing tracks

2006-10-22 Thread ulvi

No reason to take my comments to mean any more than
an expression of my personal choices.

I doubt there is user error involved,
since in 6.3.1 all my 47860 tracks are
scanned properly (or, at least, they show up in
the count; of course, I have no way of verifying if the
count itself is reported correctly).

It will be useful to have a debug functionality in which
any file that is scanned but not included in the slimserver
database is simply indicated by filename, along with a short
description of what the problem with the file was (even
if, eg, it is skipped beacause it duplicates another file
with the same tags).

My choice is a function of how much time I can devote
to pinning down problems whose diagnosis are not readily
available. If I had more time, I would have persevered
with the current 6.5.1 longer.

I will give 6.5 another shot as soon as the official
6.5.1 (or whichever the next official version is) is
released.

Thanks again

Why do you feel these implementations are poor? I have a poor
impression of Roku (and without support for Real Audio, what's the
point of an Internet radio standalone device?) but I've heard good
things about the Acoustic Energy unit.

In particular, it appears to me that the Acoustic Energy device has
several advantages (as an Internet radio device):

(1) It already has a pre-compiled, online, continually updated list of
Internet radio stations (not just live365 and radioIO);
(2) It doesn't require a server program such as Slim server (of course
we can use SqueezeNetwork, but that doesn't allow us to receive
AlienBBC); and
(3) It has minimal setup requirements -- especially compared to the
double installation of SlimServer and AlienBBC

In the end, I don't feel the advantages of the Acoustic Energy device
outweigh the advantages of the Squeezebox. Nonetheless, I do wish that
SqueezeNetwork also had a pre-compiled list of Internet radio stations.

they sound or how well they work. Slim seems set to enter the market of
one box wifi players, and I was expressing a desire that they come up

How it will sound will be another matter of course - I do hope they

[slim] Problem rescanning music

2006-10-22 Thread Ushuaia

I upgraded from a stable 6.3.0 version to 6.5.0. (XP SP 2; no
uninstall). After a full scan my library contains only a part of my
music files (approx. 25%, indicated by the display of the number of
songs).

Repeated rescans do not add any more files to the library. When I try
to add an album-folder by using 'browse music folder' and I point to an
folder I know isn't in the library yet, sometimes the songs are added to
the library, sometimes the SlimServer suddenly closes down and I get an
error message the connection to the server at localhost:9000 can't be
established. This happens each time to the same folders. I can't see
anything wrong in the folders (and in 6.3.0 they caused no problems).

What can I do to get all my music in the library without having to
check each folder manually for missing tracks and without having
Slimserver closing down each time?

Re: [slim] Possible need for a firmware reset on my SD3 device

2006-10-22 Thread Dave Strickler

I cleared out the library (I am using MySQL, so I assume it did what I asked it to do). I also reset the Remote to factory defaults, and that didn't help either.

The log I am getting from a random file chosen from the lib is included below. Do you see anything strange? The software says it's playing, but I don't see the "in progress bar" like usual, and the "VU Meter" on the Slimdevice doesn't show any tunes playing.

TIA,

Dave

[slim] Re: Logitech to acquire Slim Devices!

2006-10-22 Thread sugarmonster

There seems to be quite a lot of negativity floating around here towards
logitech. My take? It's only been a few days - give it a chance!

FWIW I don't think Logitech will be bad for slim. As others have
pointed out, they acquired harmony a while ago and those products just
keep getting stronger (I have an 885 myself and it's probably the best
sub-$500 remote I've used). They also do a very nice line in silly
money keyboards and mice, as well as the bread and butter $10 units we
all know, so they're no strangers to the higher end of the markets they
play in.

An Audiophile brand they're not - yet. With the transporter, they may
break into that world. Either way, give it a few months for the dust to
settle before we all start crying about how badly things are going...

Slimserver bug has been fixed - it should be available in tomorrow's

Re: [slim] Possible need for a firmware reset on my SD3 device

2006-10-22 Thread Dave Strickler

(thanks for the tips!)

I have done a "rescan everything" from the web interface a few times, but I am trying it again - just to make sure.

I will also try the factory reset on the SlimDevice, just to make sure there as well.

Setting the d_source on didn't give me any clues. It looked like it was reading in the MP3, and playing it out just fine. I guess that's more of a hint that it's the device itself.

I'll keep you posted - thanks!

Interesting bug. AFAIK Comment were ignored before 6.5 - however in 6.5
the AlienBBC parsing code (rtsppl) is not executed and some default
routine is called see log with --d_parse.

It'll need a bit more investigation.

Code:

My opinion is that existing products will not be altered one bit, except
perhaps in packaging and availability in brick-and-mortar retail
outlets.

Future product directions are another story. If you were looking into
something with dubious mass-market appeal like the Transporter, I'd say
buy now for fear that it could be discontinued in favor of a lower-end
consumer model. But the Squeezebox is an established crowd-pleaser and
money-earner. Logitech won't touch it.

I agree with that.

I don't agree with that: how did Harmony's product line change?

You and I may be sane and not think it's worth $200 for a keyboard, but
Logitech sells them. (no idea why anyone would pay that for a keyboard,
but I know a lot of people who don't understand why I use a Squeezebox
instead of just an iPod plugged into a stereo...)

I don't think Logitech cares about what is a niche market and what is
not: they seem to like to have a wide range of products and get people
at every price/feature mark. The people satisfied with throwing away
$10 mice when the break (me, though I will admit it is very rare that I
can't fix one by cleaning it), and the people that spend $100 on a
mouse The people that want a plain old Universal Remote, or the
people that want a programmable remote with custom keys and LCD
display.

As for buy now vs wait: sure you can wait. Or not. The ex- had a
photography teacher that denounced all digital cameras because they
keep improving them, so whatever you buy will be outdated!

By that token, you shouldn't buy a car, since newer models will come
out with more features. And don't buy a TV, the price will come down
on huge HD screens.

Buy stuff if you want it: new stuff coming is always true for
electronics. If you want to wait until a technology settles, you will
miss out.

[slim] Re: Squeezebox-like device for video?

2006-10-22 Thread Harry G

For ripping DVDs there is also DVD Shrink
http://www.dvdshrink.org/what.html. The company was litigated out of
business. The program is available now for free. It allows you to
compress a movie to fit it on disc or store it uncompressed on one of
the hard disc players.

There are many of these players from £150 - £10,000+. Some allow for
streaming over your network from your PC.

There aren't many films I would want to see more than once though our
granddaughter will watch animated movies over and over, enthralled each
time. We're thinking of gifting one of the less expensive boxes at
Christmas to alleviate the sticky fingers on DVD problem.

[slim] Re: Buy a Squeezebox now or wait?

2006-10-22 Thread jeffluckett

Really your choices are quite simple.

If you buy now, you're getting a known quantity.

If you buy later, you can't be sure what you're going to get. Will it
be better, or compromised for mass-market appeal? Will the pricepoint
shift? Who knows.

So, if you're a gambling man, wait ... play the market, put all your
chips on 13 Black. But if you are a money in the bank kinda fella
... then buy one now.

Nope, but with a Logitech brand name, it might never have been reviewed
at all by the audio publications. And I have no doubt used units will
have lower resale value with the Logitech name. If you just plan on
listening to it forever yourself, none of that matters, but every piece
of audio gear I buy these days, I assume I will be reselling at some
point in the future.

2006-10-22 Thread Yannzola

LHawes;148024 Wrote:
Just heard the news so am of course quite late to the discussion. Read
most of the posts and can see many different futures ahead for SD and
Logitech but to my mind the most likely is that Logitech will create a
good or perhaps very good music device - with a much larger market.
Slim Devices had the chance to create a GREAT music device - with a
 much smaller market.

As much as the Logitech folks might like to think of themselves as a
company they are not, they will, in the end, be driven by a passion for
the bottom line and not a passion for musical excellence. A company
 their size has no choice.

During this transition we will read all the perfectly crafted messages
stating how involved Logitech will remain in the current community, and
how dedicated they are to the SqueezeBox.

This is not a knock on Logitech as they are obligated so say such
things in our modern corporate culture.

I only hope they can come to this table and be honest about their
corporate responsibities, which must come first as the nature of
reality in the corporate world, and not pretend to be able to attend to
the existing audio community established here, let alone be willing. The
two directions are simply at cross purposes and cannot exist in a
 company of that size.

I would also assume that this forum will change radically as well.
Again, out of necessity. Nightly builds will disappear, as they must. A
more consumer friendly product (or many) will surface very shortly and
the transporter seems VERY out of place in a world of consumer driven
products, can't see how it can survive.

I won't bid a farewell as of yet but it will come soon enough, and to
that end i would like to thank all of the people here who have made the
SB such a great device and most of all to the community that has a added
lot to my knowledge in a kind and courteous way.

 Best to all,
 Larry Hawes

2006-10-22 Thread Harry G

I checked out AllofMP3 because someone had told me I could legally
download Wave and Flac files. To not have to rip and tag would be a
wonderful thing.

The site was impressive but the only albums I could find available in
anything other than MP3 were the most popular American pop albums. Not
the kind of thing I usually buy. Did I miss something?

Re: [slim] Re: Three MusicMagic Questions

2006-10-22 Thread Michael Herger

I don't find a Sent to Slimserver.

It's the button Send to in MIP's toolbar (second from the right, a
headphone). Be sure Slimserver is running and there's at lease one player
ready.

BTW: I just noticed MIP is recognized as UPnP provider (SlimServer 6.5.1).
I can browse its collection, filters and playlists from the main menu,
Mixer (build 561) - not a very reasonable menu name, but it does work :-)

[slim] Re: Slimserver shuts down by itself - why?

2006-10-22 Thread ezkcdude

I realized the other day that the reason SS was crashing for me was the
Fishbone interface! I had been using the default interface for several
weeks, since I had switched back to 6.3. The other day, I figured I try
going back to Fishbone, and lo and behold, SS shut down, right in the
middle of a song. Once I realized the problem, I was not sure what to
do, because I couldn't get back in to the SlimServer web app. Then, I
figured out I could change the interface setting in the configuration
file, and voila, SS was back up. There's something fishy with Fishbone
(sorry, I should've thrown back that pun).

You'd be much better off trying to find the problem instead of

personally i fail to see how 17 tracks that don't get counted means an
unstable server release.
it could be from a permission problem on a folder with 17 tracks. But
then again, user error almost never happens.

[slim] Has Multiple Items In Tags behaviour changed recently?

2006-10-22 Thread Brian Ritchie

I have the Multiple Items in Tags option set to /. In 6.2.2, this
worked; in 6.5.1, it doesn't. For example, albums tagged with Artist
value Budd, Harold / Eno, Brian no longer appear under each artist
separately.

When I upgraded to 6.5.0, the Multiple Items option was reset (to
empty); I tried setting it to /;, hoping that it would also pick up a
few albums where semicolon has been used. When that didn't work, I
changed it to / alone. But this doesn't work either.

Am I misunderstanding how it's meant to work?
What is supposed to happen if I set the option to /;? Would SS only
split things like Budd/;Eno, or would it split both Budd/Eno and
Budd;Eno?
Could the space I'm putting around the / in the tags be causing
problems?

now I have a computer in the basement playing audio server with
Slimserver and TiVo software on it. The CDs are all ripped and we use

But, my wife would like something in the kitchen also. The upstairs is
connected to a component audio system. But that's overkill for the
