[slim] Anyway to update firmware without SB remote?
Hi all. I just acquired an SB1 unit without remote via the local Goodwill store. I have a universal remote with the JVC DVD codes and it works fine to let me configure the setup, however, there is no brightness key on the remote so I am unable to update the firmware. I'd probably be willing to shell out the $30 ($19 + $11 shipping) for a replacement remote if I knew whether this thing worked or not. Anyone know if there is an alternate way to begin a fw update using a JVC compatible remote? Thanks in advance for any help. -- victoriousone victoriousone's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8108 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28931 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Re: Wishlist: wall pack SB
I thought about this already... in fact I vaguely remember suggesting it on here at one point. Yes, I'd kill for a Squeezebox that would simply fit onto a dual-gang UK electrical back box. Network cabling could simply terminate on IDCs, with recessed phono sockets for audio/SPDIF out and perhaps a low profile 2-pin connector for power. This could form the basis of a permanent installation. I'd have one for my kitchen and bathroom! The other thing I'd like to see is a standard SB in 17 hi-fi separate form factor. The Transporter looks stunning - but I already have an Arcam AVR-250 with a seriously high quality DAC in it. -- Squirrel Squirrel's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5785 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28575 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Wishlist: Co-development with hi-fi manufacturers
Just a thought... but now Logitech owns Slim Devices they might have more clout. Several well known hi-fi manufacturers make some pretty decent all-in-one units, eg Denon, Arcam (the Solo), as well as some of the cheaper HTIB (Home Theatre In a Box) systems. I'd propose that it's worth Slim/Logitech approaching these companies with a view to building Squeezebox client functionality into these devices. It shouldn't add much to the cost - all these units already have a VFD and MP3 decoding hardware. That way SB can integrate totally into the living room hi-fi without any need for extra boxes. Philips do something similar with the Streamium system, but this uses a proprietary protocol. The SlimServer protocol is open and documented, and adoption of this wouldn't tie you to one make of hi-fi throughout the house. Is there a way to create a MusicMagix Mix based on more than one track in Slimserver and in particular also with my squeezebox using the remote? You can take other browseable itmes like artists, albums, playlists as seed. If you want to pick a few particular songs, you can always select them in MIP, create a mix and send them to Slimserver using the Send To button (click right). 3. [slim] Problem with radio station .ram file that contains comments
I am able to play most radio stations that I want with either AlienBBC or Tune In URL. There is one I'm having problems with it seems to be associated with a .ram file that contains url's that have been commented out by the station. (presumably the commented out rows are old values). With some debugging it appears that scanPlaylistFileHandle finds 3 valid items in the playlist, i.e. even the two that were commented out. slim then tries to play the first (invalid) item. The relevant lines in debug are : scanPlaylistFileHandle: found 3 items in playlist: rtsp://a536.l1351638535.c13516.e.lr.akamaistream.net/live/D/536/13516/v0001/reflector:38535 rtsp://a1734.l1351638535.c13516.e.lr.akamaistream.net/live/D/1734/13516/v0001/reflector:38535 rtsp://a1370.l1351634108.c13516.g.lr.akamaistream.net/live/D/1370/13516/v0001/reflector:34108 The url I am using is http://www.canalsur.es/Informativos/EmisionesDirecto/CanalFiesta.ram Should the comment lines be ignored in a .ram file if so is there a way I can get slim to do it or should I be raising a bug? p.s. [slim] Re: How to find missing tracks
No reason to take my comments to mean any more than an expression of my personal choices. I doubt there is user error involved, since in 6.3.1 all my 47860 tracks are scanned properly (or, at least, they show up in the count; of course, I have no way of verifying if the count itself is reported correctly). It will be useful to have a debug functionality in which any file that is scanned but not included in the slimserver database is simply indicated by filename, along with a short description of what the problem with the file was (even if, eg, it is skipped beacause it duplicates another file with the same tags). My choice is a function of how much time I can devote to pinning down problems whose diagnosis are not readily available. If I had more time, I would have persevered with the current 6.5.1 longer. I will give 6.5 another shot as soon as the official 6.5.1 (or whichever the next official version is) is released. I have a poor impression of Roku (and without support for Real Audio, what's the point of an Internet radio standalone device?) but I've heard good things about the Acoustic Energy unit. In particular, it appears to me that the Acoustic Energy device has several advantages (as an Internet radio device): (1) It already has a pre-compiled, online, continually updated list of Internet radio stations (not just live365 and radioIO); (2) It doesn't require a server program such as Slim server (of course we can use SqueezeNetwork, but that doesn't allow us to receive AlienBBC); and (3) It has minimal setup requirements -- especially compared to the double installation of SlimServer and AlienBBC In the end, I don't feel the advantages of the Acoustic Energy device outweigh the advantages of the Squeezebox. Nonetheless, I do wish that SqueezeNetwork also had a pre-compiled list of Internet radio stations. -- tygar tygar's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=29 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28934 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I upgraded from a stable 6.3.0 version to 6.5.0. (XP SP 2; no uninstall). This happens each time to the same folders. I can't see anything wrong in the folders (and in 6.3.0 they caused no problems). [slim] Re: Logitech to acquire Slim Devices!
There seems to be quite a lot of negativity floating around here towards logitech. My take? It's only been a few days - give it a chance! FWIW I don't think Logitech will be bad for slim. As others have pointed out, they acquired harmony a while ago and those products just keep getting stronger (I have an 885 myself and it's probably the best sub-$500 remote I've used). They also do a very nice line in silly money keyboards and mice, as well as the bread and butter $10 units we all know, so they're no strangers to the higher end of the markets they play in. An Audiophile brand they're not - yet. With the transporter, they may break into that world. Re: [slim] Possible need for a firmware reset on my SD3 device
(thanks for the tips!) I have done a "rescan everything" from the web interface a few times, but I am trying it again - just to make sure. I will also try the factory reset on the SlimDevice, just to make sure there as well. Setting the d_source on didn't give me any clues. It looked like it was reading in the MP3, and playing it out just fine. I guess that's more of a hint that it's the device itself. I'll keep you posted - thanks! My opinion is that existing products will not be altered one bit, except perhaps in packaging and availability in brick-and-mortar retail outlets. Future product directions are another story. But the Squeezebox is an established crowd-pleaser and money-earner. Logitech won't touch it. I don't agree with that: how did Harmony's product line change? You and I may be sane and not think it's worth $200 for a keyboard, but Logitech sells them. (no idea why anyone would pay that for a keyboard, but I know a lot of people who don't understand why I use a Squeezebox instead of just an iPod plugged into a stereo...) I don't think Logitech cares about what is a niche market and what is not: they seem to like to have a wide range of products and get people at every price/feature mark. The people satisfied with throwing away $10 mice when the break (me, though I will admit it is very rare that I can't fix one by cleaning it), and the people that spend $100 on a mouse The people that want a plain old Universal Remote, or the people that want a programmable remote with custom keys and LCD display. As for buy now vs wait: sure you can wait. Or not. The ex- had a photography teacher that denounced all digital cameras because they keep improving them, so whatever you buy will be outdated! By that token, you shouldn't buy a car, since newer models will come out with more features. And don't buy a TV, the price will come down on huge HD screens. Buy stuff if you want it: new stuff coming is always true for electronics. If you want to wait until a technology settles, you will miss out. -- snarlydwarf snarlydwarf's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1179 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28952 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

LHawes;148024 Wrote: Just heard the news so am of course quite late to the discussion. Read most of the posts and can see many different futures ahead for SD and Logitech but to my mind the most likely is that Logitech will create a good or perhaps very good music device - with a much larger market. Slim Devices had the chance to create a GREAT music device - with a much smaller market. As much as the Logitech folks might like to think of themselves as a company they are not, they will, in the end, be driven by a passion for the bottom line and not a passion for musical excellence. A company their size has no choice. During this transition we will read all the perfectly crafted messages stating how involved Logitech will remain in the current community, and how dedicated they are to the SqueezeBox. This is not a knock on Logitech as they are obligated so say such things in our modern corporate culture. I only hope they can come to this table and be honest about their corporate responsibities, which must come first as the nature of reality in the corporate world, and not pretend to be able to attend to the existing audio community established here, let alone be willing. The two directions are simply at cross purposes and cannot exist in a company of that size. I would also assume that this forum will change radically as well. Again, out of necessity. Nightly builds will disappear, as they must. A more consumer friendly product (or many) will surface very shortly and the transporter seems VERY out of place in a world of consumer driven products, can't see how it can survive. I won't bid a farewell as of yet but it will come soon enough, and to that end i would like to thank all of the people here who have made the SB such a great device and most of all to the community that has a added lot to my knowledge in a kind and courteous way. I checked out AllofMP3 because someone had told me I could legally download Wave and Flac files. To not have to rip and tag would be a wonderful thing. The site was impressive but the only albums I could find available in anything other than MP3 were the most popular American pop albums. Not the kind of thing I usually buy. Re: [slim] Re: Three MusicMagic Questions
I don't find a Sent to Slimserver. It's the button Send to in MIP's toolbar (second from the right, a headphone). Be sure Slimserver is running and there's at lease one player ready. BTW: I just noticed MIP is recognized as UPnP provider (SlimServer 6.5.1). I can browse its collection, filters and playlists from the main menu, Mixer (build 561) - not a very reasonable menu name, but it does work :-) -- Michael - http://www.herger.net/SlimCD - your SlimServer on a CD http://www.herger.net/slim - AlbumReview, Biography, MusicInfoSCR ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: Slimserver shuts down by itself - why?
I realized the other day that the reason SS was crashing for me was the Fishbone interface! I had been using the default interface for several weeks, since I had switched back to 6.3. The other day, I figured I try going back to Fishbone, and lo and behold, SS shut down, right in the middle of a song. Once I realized the problem, I was not sure what to do, because I couldn't get back in to the SlimServer web app. Then, I figured out I could change the interface setting in the configuration file, and voila, SS was back up. There's something fishy with Fishbone (sorry, I should've thrown back that pun). -- ezkcdude DIY projects page: http://www.ezdiyaudio.com System: SB3-EZDAC-MIT Terminator 2 interconnects-Endler Audio 24-step Attenuators (RCA-direct)-Parasound Halo A23 125W/ch amplifier-Speltz anti-cables-DIY 2-ways + Dayton Titanic 10 subwoofer He's not hi-fi, he's my stereo. ezkcdude's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2545 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28032 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Has Multiple Items In Tags behaviour changed recently?
I have the Multiple Items in Tags option set to /. In 6.2.2, this worked; in 6.5.1, it doesn't. For example, albums tagged with Artist value Budd, Harold / Eno, Brian no longer appear under each artist separately. When I upgraded to 6.5.0, the Multiple Items option was reset (to empty); I tried setting it to /;, hoping that it would also pick up a few albums where semicolon has been used. When that didn't work, I changed it to / alone. But this doesn't work either. Am I misunderstanding how it's meant to work? What is supposed to happen if I set the option to /;? Would SS only split things like Budd/;Eno, or would it split both Budd/Eno and Budd;Eno? Could the space I'm putting around the / in the tags be causing problems? -- Brian -- Brian Ritchie Brian Ritchie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2319 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28959 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Well I have a feeling that I'll be buying one now and more later. Right now I have a computer in the basement playing audio server with Slimserver and TiVo software on it. The CDs are all ripped and we use an old laptop and SoftSqueeze upstairs to listen to our music. The laptop would get replaced with a Squeezebox. But, my wife would like something in the kitchen also. The upstairs is connected to a component audio system. But that's overkill for the kitchen.
