Re: [slim] Squeezebox Desires

2007-04-25 Thread danco

Audio Hijack is a nice program, but it doesn't really do what you want.
the same people have a program called Nicecast that takes sound and
broadcasts it, and the Squeezebox can then pick up this sound.

Trouble is that the it takes enough time for Nicecast to process the
sound that you probably would have the audio too much out of synch with
the video for this approach to be good. Still, you could download
Nicecast free and try it out - until you pay it degrades the sound
after about fifteen minutes.

Re: [slim] Playing 24/48

2007-04-25 Thread Rangdo

Are you streaming WAV or FLAC (i.e. is Slimserver or the Squeezebox
doing the transcoding)?

I've got an outstanding bug where 24/48 FLACs play fine when transcoded
by my SB2, but white noise when done by the server. I prefer to have
decoding done server-side as IMO it sounds marginally better.

Re: [slim] Songs found through Search but not through Browse

2007-04-25 Thread Capricorn

I think I've got a similar problem since yesterday.

After a Rescan I'm missing 317 (!) Artists out of 951 in my database. A
Wipe and Rescan increased the number of Artists up to 837. Because of
the still missing Artists I rescanned again and got again a number of
634 Artists!

Only the album browse menu still shows: "695 discs with 8669 Songs by
951 Artists".

The result is disappointing: I'm no longer able to search for a huge
number of songs "by artist".

And for sure: My harddisk of course contents these 951 Artists!

Anybody there with an idea what to do?

Thanks in advance,

Martin

Re: [slim] Songs found through Search but not through Browse

2007-04-25 Thread strindberg

Yes, it is repeatable in the sense that these are not the only artists
for which the problem shows up. But it does not happen for every artist
with more than one album.

Quickly looking through some folders, I found more examples:
Les Negresses Vertes
Famille Nombreuse (shown)
Mlah (not shown)
Manu Chao
Clandestino (shown)
Proxima Estacion Esperanza (shown)
Radio Bemba Sound System (not shown)

I understand the problem with different encodings, but as you can see
above and from earlier examples, it's not really the names that do have
non-ascii characters that don't show up, so I don't really think this is
the problem. And furthermore, if it were an encoding problem, I guess I
shouldn't be able to find the albums through search. To me, it seems as
though SS finds the files and knows to which artists/albums they belong,
but that there is a problem in the "display by artist"-codde.

This worked on 6.5.1 on Windows. It's when I switched to Ubuntu and
then got 6.5.2 through apt that the problem showed up.

This is quite a common request and the short answer is that it appears
not to be possible with the existing architecture.

I, for one, don't find such functionality at all interesting (and it's
really quite a deviation from the core functionality the SB is designed
for) but I can understand why others might find it interesting.

adapted to the specific systems to make slimserver capable of being a

Hijack, it has some of that functionality i believe would be needed to

Tried clearing Sting out of the composer field... He was there for 1 or

I'm going to try and dig up the cds, delete the files and rescan...

#2 is caused by the fact that there's a startup delay on the Ogg
decoder, to avoid skipping. And since Transporter has a faster CPU, it
starts before the SB. I think Richard is planning on fixing this so the
decoder runs even while paused.

The knob is a great interface. IMHO, It's a big part of what the clickwheel is
on the iPod, and the interface is what makes the iPod my portable player of
choice.

I'm hoping the mythical SB4 has SB3 guts, 2 screens and a knob. My ears don't

Re: [slim] Looking at improving multi-player synchronization

2007-04-25 Thread CatBus

For what it's worth, here is my experience with synchronization.

In general, things actually work very very well. I do have two
problems, however:

1) The current sync implementation breaks gapless playback and inserts
a very audible gap between consecutive tracks. I understand (and
agree) that the best time to resync players is between tracks, but
there has got to be a way to insert only as much "gap" as is required
to get the players back in sync. In many cases, this gap would be so
small as to be unnoticeable.

2) Syncing between SB3 and Transporter doesn't work with native Ogg
playback, so I have to transcode to FLAC. Not a big deal in itself
(and an easy enough workaround), but this may indicate a problem in how
the basic sync process currently works, because the sync logic in this
case doesn't maintain a lack of delay between players, it merely
maintains a constant and unvarying delay.

[slim] Playing 24/48

2007-04-25 Thread liffy99

I'm lost !
I've ripped my CD music library to FLAC and everything is absolutely
fine.
Last week I started to record my vinyl using Audacity. Parameters have
been set to either 32 bit floating or 24 bit resolution at 48KHz and
output to a WAV file.
I then use Media Monkey to convert the WAV to FLAC.
Whichever recording option I use (24 or 32 bit), when I play back over
my SB3 I just get white noise.
Playing the same files on my PC via Media Monkey though is just fine.
Any ideas anyone ?

The problem with a set delay is that there's going to be a variance in

Re: [slim] Looking at improving multi-player synchronization

2007-04-25 Thread pbjbryan

I'm synching two players, and I'd like to adjust the time delay between
them to minimize echo. Is there some way like a plugin or hidden player
setting to do this?

I'm currently synching an SB3 and a computer running SoftSqueeze 3.3.
All files are lossless (flac), and I have high-quality digital
converters in each room (UA 2192 and RME HDSP). SoftSqueeze has a
configurable buffer size for the audio output, but it needs to be quite
large (>1.5s), so there's a lot of delay.

Btw, audio travels a little over a foot every ms (1.12'/ms), so a 90'
separation will be about 80ms, the time where delays start to become
perceived as distinct echos (as opposed to doubling or thickening).
Delays under about 80ms are micenuts as someone mentioned above, and
delays under about 20ms are knatscocks.

[slim] Any graphic artists in the house?

2007-04-25 Thread JJZolx

Or maybe just someone handy with Photoshop. Could someone take the
existing gray buttons from the Default skin and turn out a set in, say,
black? They'd need to be done on a transparent background. I've been
playing with a color (stylesheet) changer for the Default skin, but the
one set of gray buttons limits what can be done with background colors.

It's also suggested in this enhancement request that the gray buttons
look like they're disabled:

http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=4675

I don't know if I agree with that, but I've always found that the
Default color scheme of gray on white to be too low contrast and hard
on the eyes.

It would also be nice to get a new button of *>|* that could be used
for "play next", which is absent from this skin.

(Posted to General, because I doubt that I'd get a response in the
Developer forum).

computer screen and look at the SqueezeBox to do this, but it would be
nice to see it somewhere directly on the computer screen without
needing to move the mouse.

2. See the rating and maybe more information such as album art of the
track that is playing. If I click on the on the player icon in the
Firefox extension a new webpage will be opened and my reading on the
original web site I was looking at is interrupted and the original page
is moved in the background.

3. Change the rating of the currently playing song. This either
requires me to open the slimserver web interface and click a few times
to get into the TrackStat page, or reach for the remote control and
rate the track. If I could do this without changing page in the web
browser it would be great.

Re: [slim] Turtle Radio goes the way of all good things

2007-04-25 Thread bklaas

I had an Audiotron. It wasn't bad, but it was no squeezebox. One of the
things that bothered me greatly when I owned it was the reliance on
TurtleRadio for internet streams, and look at what happened now...

Oh well...I moved UP to the squeezebox several years ago and never
really looked back.

There is one thing I miss...the KNOB. LOVE THE KNOB. Not the first time
I've mentioned it around here...I half-wonder if my endless KNOB rants
had anything to do with that big shiny one on the Transporter...

Looks great, but I think I gave my GF a scare when I inadvertently
started up my Study-SB (while I'm in the living room).

How does this work in multi-SB installations?

Cool toy, but I must be missing something. If firefox is open, then
you're (at most) one click from the full web interface, where you can
not only perform the two or three tasks offered by this addon, but many
more.

Re: [slim] Preferences/settings file in SlimServer ?

2007-04-25 Thread byKnight

Look for a .prefs file in Slimserver's server directory. I *think* it's
called slimserver.prefs.

I tried this just last night.

1. Installed SlimServer on a brand new machine.
2. Stopped SlimServer on the new machine.
3. Copied the .prefs file and the plugins directory from my previous
SlimServer installation on an old machine to the new machine.
4. Restarted SlimServer on the new machine.

It came up with all my old preferences. Saved me a lot of time.

In this case, the SlimServer version on both the old and new machines
was identical. I would imagine there *could* be *some* wrinkles if one
moved .prefs and/or plugins between different SlimServer versions.

Re: [slim] Songs found through Search but not through Browse

2007-04-25 Thread erland

Is it repeatable for all artists, or is it just albums for these two
artists that have the problem ?

The swedish character ö could cause problems if the character encodings
settings doesn't match everywhere, it still looks strange that the album
would disappear though. However, since "Jacques Brel" had the same
problem I suspect this isn't the problem.

Did you use a previous SlimServer version before where it worked
correctly ?

I have no problem listing several albums for an artist in the Artists
menu. I am using 6.5.1 on Ubuntu Dapper, installed with tar.gz
distribution.

Re: [slim] Songs found through Search but not through Browse

2007-04-25 Thread strindberg

Am I really the only one being hit by this? It sure seems like a pretty
bad bug to me.

I have done some more experimenting. First of all, I have made sure
that all mp3-tags are ID3v2.3, saved in iso-8859-1. I have also toggled
all possible settings regarding the grouping of songs in compilation
albums, although I don't think this problem has anything to do with
that.

Now I have limited my collection to four files, two mp3-files and two
flac-files.

The mp3-files belong to two different albums by David Sandström, the
flac-files belong to two different albums by Jacques Brel.

After a wipe and rescan, SS reports "Your music library contains 4
albums with 4 songs by 2 artists." So far so good.

If I brows by album (Browse -> Album in the web interface) I see all
four albums. The same if I browse by Artists, and then select All
Albums.

BUT: when I browse by Artists, and then select either one of the two
artists, only one album each is listed, although it should be two for
each artist.

So, to recapitulate: SS is well aware of there being four albums, I can
reach them through browsing on albums, or through searching, but if I go
through the individual artist, only one album is displayed.

This is still SS 6.5.2 on Kubuntu, upgraded through apt-get this
evening.

Re: [slim] SqueezeFox - Slimserver extension for Firefox

2007-04-25 Thread erland

Works great in 2.0.0.3 on Linux for me.

Great work!

Some feature wishes follows:

Maybe it would be a good idea to make it possible to also open the
songinfo page for the currently playing song besides open up SlimServer
it self ?

The volume slider is completely useless to me since I use the volume
control on the reciever to change the volume. Would it be possible to
add an option to hide the volume slider since it uses unneccesary
screen space now ?

It would also be great if it could display the currently playing song
somewhere, if this is possible. It probably takes up to much screen
space to show it always, but maybe it could be shown a few seconds
after a new track starts to play ?

And now when I am wishing, it would be great if it was possible to
change the rating for the currently playing song. There is a CLI
interface in the TrackStat plugin that makes this possible. TrackStat
needs to be installed though.

Is it possible to show other things than text in the tooltips ? If it
is, it would be great to also show the albumart in the tooltip of the
currently playing song.

[slim] Preferences/settings file in SlimServer ?

2007-04-25 Thread BlipBlop

Is there a preferences/settings file in SlimServer? One that I can copy
and use when a new version of SlimServer comes around?

I am thinking of a file that contains my personal preferences regarding
Server Settings and Player Settings.

Will this old preferences/settings file work with a new version of
SlimServer?

PS I always uninstall SlimServer and install the new version since
updating the existing version has not worked for me on several
occasions...thus it is would be quite nice to have all of my
preferences in a file so I will not have to do it all again manually

Yes, but provided you don't limit it by genre, it won't matter. It

accounted for.

You might try isolating the problem by using a direct ethernet
connection between the devices. If that works, go to wireless and
borrow/try a different access point. The problem sure feels
network-related, so that's what I'd look at first.

Do you have anything in your environment (wireless phone, microwave

Hi everyone, first post and all that...

I've made an extension that lets you control your slimserver from

with some additional features

Define an server url/port for non localhost servers
Tooltip shows the currently playing track
Added Next/Previous track buttons
Slider updates to show the current volume level (and displays it on a
tooltip)

and a few others, mostly more effecient javascript functions and the
like

take a look, let me know what you think

Re: [slim] Help! Wireless Nightmare - music trapped on computer!

2007-04-25 Thread Millwood

I don't know about your 700AP. But it appears it may have some router
capabilities. You don't want that for a second access point.

I use a router as a second access point. The trick is to turn off
DHCP, and then to connect NOTHING to the WAN port. You connect an
ether cable from one of the lan ports on the router to one of the lan
ports on the WAP. It then operates as a switch, and at the IP level
its completely invisible.

Of course, you need to configure its Wireless. To do this, you need to
assign it a lan ip address other then the router's and outside the
router's DHCP range.

It's technically possible but will be awkward and not terribly cheap.
You'll have to set up an Ad-hoc connection to the SB and bridge the
port so it'll be a very specific setup that will only connect to your
single computer--you won't be able to easily and freely associate any
arbitrary wireless device with the SB. You're almost certainly better
off buying another cheap wireless router and placing it near the SB3.

Success! I installed yesterday's 6.5.2 daily, renamed
mplayerrc1.exe to mplayer.exe, installed custom-convert.conf into the
same folder as convert.conf, and the issue is solved! M4a's are now
playing flawlessly (and the web interface with yesterday's 6.5.2 is
performing much better than last weekend's 6.5.2). BPA, I can't thank

Yeah, there are a couple of things where I always have to put an
asterisk beside what I say.

Like this one. Another one that comes to mind is ReplayGain in FLAC.
Yes, it's track gain only - not album gain, which I don't use anyway.

There may be others that escape me at the moment but I'm sure someone

[slim] SB3, Laptop and wireless upgrade

2007-04-25 Thread killie99

Am I right in saying that the wireless SB3 can be used as a wireless AP
for my laptop to connect to my network (providing I'm in range of
course!)?
What I'd like to do if have the SB3 connecting to my music server by
the wired connection and use the wireless part of the SB3 to let my
laptop accress the wired network, only problem is that I have a wired
only SB3 so is it possible to buy the wireless card and antenna and fit
them myself? I don't see the wireless card listed on the Slimdevices
website as a accessory so maybe I'm out of luck.

It's good to get a summary of what worked for you.

>From 6.5.1 a change in Slimserver makes use of socketwrapper for
formats that needs transcoding such as m4a. However some security s/w
stops the distributed socketwrapper from working (usually they think it
is a Trojan app) - this may be the case on your system.

What security/Antivirus/Firewall s/w have you installed.

It is hoped to change the distribution to use the new socketwrapper
when it is shown to work in most, if not all cases - so understanding
your system configuration is important to use a test case.

Re: [slim] Firmware update each time I switch from SlimServer to SqueezeNetwork

2007-04-25 Thread bonze

But, as pointed out before in this thread and others, there is no need
for a full install of nightly 6.5.2.
It is only necessary to either:
1) update the firmware via SqueezeNetwork and adjust the version file
manually, or
2) grab the firmware & version file from the latest nightly upload.

The latest version of the firmware works OK with 6.5.1
There is no need to install a "beta" release of 6.5.2.

Why is this such a big issue??

[slim] Squeezebox keeps disconneting

2007-04-25 Thread trixpan

Gentlemen,

I'm having a problem with my squeezebox in here. From time to time my
squeezebox disconnects from the slimserver. Symptoms are generally:

- reset current stream, what means that it starts playing the MP3, or
CUE defined track from point 0.

- dark screen (means invisible to server with no display active)

- no ping to squeezebox from server machine (windows xp sp2).

The quick workaround seems to be pinging the SB3! (weird)

My current setup is running WPA2 AES, static IPs for both SB3 and XP,
access point is a Billion 7404VGO WiFI/VOIP/ADSL2+ Router and
Squeezebox firmware is version 81.

All I see with slimproto_v enabled is:

Checking if 00:04:20:06:52:d7 is still alive
sending squeezebox frame: stat, length: 0
Checking if 00:04:20:06:52:d7 is still alive
sending squeezebox frame: stat, length: 0
sending squeezebox frame: grfe, length: 1284
Checking if 00:04:20:06:52:d7 is still alive
sending squeezebox frame: stat, length: 0
sending squeezebox frame: grfe, length: 1284
Checking if 00:04:20:06:52:d7 is still alive

Any suggestion about what can it be?

- I run SlimServer on Linux on dedicated hardware such as an NAS

I originally ran SS 6.3 on QNAP TS101 but when 6.5 came out I decided to
build a dedicated server box to run a number of central applications on
a server.

I now have a VIA EN 1.5GHz with 1GB RAM and 80GB SATA HDD. This runs
Windows 2003 R2 Server (Technet licensed) and acts as my DNS, WINS,
Domain, File & Print, Home-automation, WEb-server and Slimserver. Runs
without a problem as a headless server in the garage making very little
noise and consuming 27W(measured it with a plug-in adapter). The QNAP is
still used as a true NAS device just holding everyone's files

Very happy all in all.

Uhm, that doesn't seem to be exactly the same issue. As far as I know
our problem here is "just" that you need to install a beta release to
get out of the upgrade/downgrade vicious circle when switching between
slimserver and squeezenetworks. If this process then leads to firmware
chrashes it only makes it even worst :-(

With regard to the other comment few posts before "why I wouldn't want
all the other fixes" my answer is: yes, I would like as may fixes as
possible that "have had the time to be stabilized". Obviously bug fixes
and new features that were checked in yesterday and came in in the night
build have not been stabilized yet (read, many beta testers running the
last build and reporting new bugs... because - yes - new features and
bug corrections CAN introduce new bugs! That's the difference between a
beta version and a final release). Having said that, I fuly agree that
slimserver's beta are better than many other software final releases.

Re: [slim] Can't play my itunes files :-( ......and it's driving me mad. Please help!!

2007-04-25 Thread Julian Thompson

So just to recap - this seems a popular fault.

1) The Slimserver software worked fine and controlled the SB3.

2) The ordinary MP3 music files played.

3) The Apple files (m4a) did not play - instead the display would lock
and not do anything with the song stuck at 0.00 time.

The actions I took were:

1) Installed latest version of SS - 6.5.2 - NO CHANGE APPARANT.

2) Tried to check all 3 AAC file format boxes in SS client file types
settings which caused errors...

3) ...so I installed LAME decoder. - NO CHANGE APPARANT.

4) Deleted socketwrapper.exe and replaced it with the larger
socketwrapper file offered to me here. - Now the music would play with
apple tracks but only if you left it for about 10 minutes between
tracks.

5) I then noted that if I use the SS remote handset it was working
perfectly with no delay. This must have been the socketwrapper change
because it didn't work before like that.

6) I then rebooted the machine and it works perfectly from either the
web interface or the player.

I'm really sorry I can't just say exactly what I did to fix it so I
thought this process might be constructive if you are having a similar
fault.

Cheers,

Julian :-))
