Re: [slim] Just hooked up my new duet!

2008-11-11 Thread 1ka

If you download artwork from Apple, then it doesn't appear on the Duet
controller. However you can do the following:

Open iTunes.
Select the album and right-click on the artwork image.
Select the copy option.
Right-click on the album name and select clear downloaded artwork.
Now paste the copied artwork back.

For some reason, when you copy artwork, or load your own artwork, then
all works fine. It's a bit laborious if you have many albums...

I think if the Transporter had a forum to itself then it would be a very
bare place. However, I do feel sorry for those novice Transporter users
who enter into the Audiophile forum (into the Lions den.. etc).

SB Classic should only be split into it's own forum if the general
forum continues to be far too busy to be practical.

I think what we *definitely* need is an off-topic forum as shown by the
various current political threads. A forum of this type is very useful
(if only to keep spats confined) and seems common on the boards I have
visited.

Re: [slim] Help! SB3 drops out...Router Issue?

2008-11-11 Thread mr-b

The reason why DHCP should be used is because SB is intended to be a
consumer device and it should just work. DHCP is a pretty old
standard now, so there's really no excuse. Ask most consumers to get
involved with configuring static IPs or swapping routers when their
other wireless devices work fine and they're going to cease to be SB
customers pretty quickly!

I'd like the SB to work as an easy-to-use consumer device for purely
selfish reasons. It will become more popular, and then hopefully get
more features and a lower price. ;-)

Currently I've borrowed a Netgear router and all seems to be OK. I'll
try going back to my Linksys (WRT54GX v2) later and dig out Wireshark
(new name for Ethereal) to try to spot any smoking guns.

Yeah, I would have expected that too. I don't see the delay in while
using any of the web UI skins though. Further observations I have
noticed that the repeat modes will update if changing other functions;
i.e. changing from play to paused or if the web page is refreshed. Then
the repeat mode will update with the other function. Shuffle mode
changes within 5 sec. on its own as expected. No big deal I guess.
Repeat mode will update when the track changes.

[slim] Nokia Comes with Music

Hi all

Anyone familiar with this new mobile phone music service?

It seems that you get unlimited downloads to your phone and one
registered pc (one at a time anyway) and that any tracks downloaded are
yours to keep forever (although some sort of copy protection must exist
to restrict them to one pc at a time)

Anyone know whether these would work with slimserver?

Cheers, Ant

[slim] Sugarcube not working?

2008-11-11 Thread Bert57

Installed Musicip headless and sugarcube. Both checked in settings.
Restarted SC.
From Spicefly:

How it Works
Just pick a single track to play from your library and the journey
begins! While that track is playing, SugarCube takes it and asks
MusicIP for another track (based on specified criteria). SugarCube then
queues that up to play.
When I select a specific song and select play I expected Sugarcube to
use that song as the seed and create a mix. Instead I get the same
song played over and over.
Is it a setting?
Suggestions?
Thanks

I think the only way to debug this is either to have some form of
detailed wireless/ip logging on the SB (no idea if this is possible) or
else take a packet trace just before the SB drops off the network.

Because there is a possibility that you may have an intermittant ip/mac
conflict on your network between the laptop and the SB. Since your SB is
presumably not a device that comes and goes (unlike a laptop) then
giving it a static IP address makes a lot of sense and eliminates this
possibility. While you are at it, you might want to check that the SB
MAC address in your SB and in your router ARP table matches the sticky
label on the bottom. Just to eliminate another possibility.

The less variables there are in a system each time it boots up the
better.

I don't know why people get so hung up about DHCP. IMO the best
approach is to use DHCP for transient connections and static ip for
permanent ones. YMMV.

You can do a packet trace using Ethereal.

However, when you turn off the laptop wi-fi, one of the first things
that happens is that the ARP table in the router and server are going
to be rebuilt...

on the server, in a command window, type arp -a with the laptop on -
you should see ip/mac entries for your router, SB and laptop. Now turn
off the laptop wi-fi and arp -a again - only the laptop should have
gone. Check the mac addresses carefully and make sure they all tally
with your actual hardware.

If everything looks OK, then consider using Ethereal...

Right-click on the album name and select clear downloaded artwork.
Now paste the copied artwork back.

Basically thus is what my application (below) does.
Only difference is that it does it autmatically for all your CDs

Re: [slim] What an election.

2008-11-11 Thread Nonreality

Mike from slimdevices has clarified that this is the right forum to post
an occasional post that isn't about music or the SB in whatever form.
It was nice to get a clarification about this because there was a small
but vocal group that was very upset about this thread. They basically
thought they owned this forum and started 3 or more threads about us
cluttering up their email with something they didn't want to read. I
really didn't start this thread to upset them and actually didn't
really think about them but didn't want a partisan first post either
gloating or crying about the election but just an observation that it
was one of the more interesting ones in recent times and hoping for the
best for the USA and the rest of the world and for more good music. I
really thought it was a message that would not upset anyone. But it
did anyway. I really find it weird that anyone would be upset about a
discussion about this in a general thread. One has even taken his ball
home he was that upset. It was just one thread. I just don't get it.

Re: [slim] SqueezeBox3 slow response

2008-11-11 Thread madsandrup

Hi.

As mentioned in one of my earlier posts, just run the powercfg
command every 3. minute and there is no problems with the
SqueezeCenter/SqueezeBox :-)
The Eee box is for me still a much better choice then running the SC on
e.g. my Synology DS107+ NAS. Because using the NAS to run the SC will
give a terrible read/write performance, and maintaining the SC under
Linux is for me totally out of the question.

Running the SC on the Eee box and streaming to one SB3 does not utilize
the CPU usage to more then about 1%.
Streaming a .mpg video does not raise the utilization to more the about
5%, but I don't know what it can't do.

If You are buying a Eee box, please post the problem to Asus :-)

Mads

other wireless devices work fine and they're going to cease to be SB

I'd like the SB to work as an easy-to-use consumer device for purely
selfish reasons. It will become more popular, and then hopefully get
more features and a lower price. ;-)

Currently I've borrowed a Netgear router and all seems to be OK. I'll
try going back to my Linksys (WRT54GX v2) later and dig out Wireshark
(new name for Ethereal) to try to spot any smoking guns.

I agree in principle, but it seems in practice that DHCP can have
issues (that are router related) in some setups.

I use a Linksys WAG54GS that is fine in this context.

I guess the question is whether an OT board could be passively
moderated (i.e. use of Report This Post button) rather than actively
moderated like other boards are.

I suspect it's difficult to draw that kind of distinction in practice
if you're committed elsewhere to active moderation, because issues do
bleed across boards (someone slags someone off in OT, but brings it up

AA batteries.

The old IR- remote doesn't work fine anymore. Some buttons are not
always responding and some are as good as dead. The arrow down and the
sleep button are the worst. First I thought about a software problem
caused by an upgrade, but the new- design remote works fine on both

What about a Third Party option:

Not really minding the occasional off-topic thread reflecting key

finding the SNR of the three subsequent threads out of all proportion

[slim] Open-Source Crestron Module

2008-11-11 Thread jwmelvin

I am developing a Crestron module for SqueezeCenter. If anyone is
interested in testing it and/or helping me with development, I would
like to get in touch. It should be fairly comprehensive, although I'm
starting with the basics.

At the moment, all the basic functionality works. And you can directly
play playlists and dynamic playlists, which is what I use most of the
time. I am working on the touchpanel listing and it is close to having
a working list output/browser. Next is playing now display then we can
move to things like Pandora, etc.

To use this module, you will want to be able to program your Crestron.
I work with a certified programmer, who is making the touchpanel
interfaces. I also appreciate hearing from people about their
experiences with the commercial modules available (ControlWorks, Media
Realms, Rocket GUI). It may take a while but I intend to make this a
workable solution for people who are interested in tinkering. It will
remain open-source, although I haven't decided on a particular license
under which to release it. Thoughts on that are also appreciated.

packets...O what fun!!

The other thing I want to try is to pull the power from the SB3 while
the laptop is connected. I've only been looking at it one-sided. If the
laptop is booted when i terminate the sb3 then my problem becomes more
isolated, and shouel be easier to remedy. When i last looked at the
router via its server app, It was configured for DHCP. I could just as
easily assign static, I suppose, but I thought I did do that when I 1st
setup the SB3. I gave it a 192.168.1.5 after I previously had it running
with 192.168.1.4 (the laptop is 192.168.1.3). In both .4 and then .5 the
SBs still dropped when I shut off the laptop. Excuse the verbose style.
I have a head cold a mile wide and my forward vision feels more like
peripheral.

[slim] Happy Transporter convert!

2008-11-11 Thread Brian Ritchie

So I'm supposed to post stuff about Transporter to the Audiophile forum?
Well, precisely what I wanted to say was that I don't consider myself
an audiophile, and don't consider my system to be audiophile quality:

Arcam Delta 290 / 290P paired amps
Mission 7-something speakers, bi-amped
Arcam Alpha 6 CD player
(other bits irrelevant)

(See, I can't even remember what speakers we have!)

Simple tests suggested that the Alpha 6 sounded better to me than the
SB3, but sheer convenience of the SB3 won out. (Also, the Alpha 6
sometimes skips, even after a major service.)

I wasn't sure that I'd feel the benefit of splashing out on a
Transporter, which easily costs 2-3 times as much as any of the other
components. But eventually, I decided I could afford to try.

As far as I'm concerned, the difference is staggering.

I don't have the language to put it into words properly. I've read that
the Transporter is more involving, and though I've no idea what that
means, I think I agree. :-)

When we added the 290P and bi-amped, the big difference was that vocals
really started to stand out. I'd sort-of forgotten that, or got used to
it sounding the way it does; but the Transporter brings it back to life
with a vengeance.

I'm not staggered all the time; for background listening I'd probably
be happy with the SB3 (which now lives in the kitchen), but even then,
every now and again something will come on and I'll have to stop
whatever else I'm doing and listen, for I'm hearing things I've never
noticed before.

So if you're wondering whether your system would justify a
Transporter, perhaps this will help persuade you to try!

[slim] Sort by Artist/Album

2008-11-11 Thread BigTony

Dear All,

I know that somewhere I ticked a box so that when I browse my music
collection it follows Artist/Album, but this doesn't work the way I
wanted and I'd prefer to reset the default to Album. I can change it
everytime I load a page, but its a pain, and there must be a way to
reset the default, but I can't find it anywhere!

I use the N770 skin.

Cheers

[slim] Squeezebox 3 + active speakers... + subwoofer?

2008-11-11 Thread Paul Shields

After enjoying my Boom recently with a recently purchased ebay bargain
subwoofer (a Jamo Sub 200) I now have to retire the subwoofer as the
Boom takes its rightful place in the bedroom.

Rather than waste a nice bit of kit, I was wondering if it can be used
with the Squeezebox 3? My current setup with the SB3 is quite simple -
a couple of Adam A7 active speakers. Is there a way for the SB3 to also
feed the Jamo Sub like the Boom can do so well?

[slim] Squeezebox Classic 'Freezing' requires switched off

2008-11-11 Thread SteveSlim

Hi

I have had an ongoing problem which has just about rendered my
Squeezebox classic unuseabale inthe last couple of months.

Problem manifests in a number of ways.

1. The response to the remote controll gets slower and slower until it
completely freezes and I need to unplug the power to get it to work
again.

Or

2. It will either suddenly stop turn itself off then on and start from
the beginning of a track and do the same at the end of the track.

Or

It freezes at the end of a track and I have to unplug the power to
restart it as it stops responding to the remote control.

I have a Belkin N Series Router strength 80 % and am running
Squeezecentre on Windows Home Server.

You mean _dis_continuing the SB3? Probably.

SqueezeCenter 7.3 seems to be getting the bum's rush out the door in

be a reason. Traditionally with Slim Devices, it means a new product

However, there are now 4 threads complaining. This is just very very

Re: [slim] Squeezebox 3 + active speakers... + subwoofer?

2008-11-11 Thread Paul Shields

Answering my own question here, but I guess I could use a Y splitter
from the phono/RCA outs of the SB3? The sub has a crossover so I'm
guessing that it would cut off everything above say 150Hz. As the sub
has left and right inputs, would it make sense to use two Y splitters
to feed the Adams and the sub on each channel, or would a single feed
from one of the channels suffice - assuming that such low frequencies
don't have any significant stereo separation?

Re: [slim] Squeezebox 3 + active speakers... + subwoofer?

2008-11-11 Thread Mnyb

What are the possibility's of the sub ? Does it have a right and left
rca input ? if so use any Y splitter cable or solder your own.

If it has only one rca input (intended for the sub out on HT amps etc)
Then you have to think about an active filter or pre amp with active
filters or similar but i'm a little clueless about that.

There is digital filters/processors in every price range ? but the pro
audio folks here nows much more than me. You can probably go to your
local music equipment store (not your hifi dealer ) and look at some
surprisingly well priced stuff from the likes of behringer who are
popular among amateur artists or really expensive pro gear too.

But i'm out of my league here others may have solid product
recommendations.

Mike,

i respect this answer and i respect your authority, (cartman style!)

since there is a vocal minority who are also, i assume, valued members

the main thing i am asking for is for a new anything goes forum to be
created that ostensibly would be for any NON-slim topic, (and of course
it should be civil and also not promote the competition). the new sub
forum could be easily ignored by others.

it isn't to be created for just the one political thread and 4
complaining threads, but rather as a place where people can talk
without fear of being too off topic or annoying slim devotees. i know
in the past i simply self censored things that didn't fall under
general discussion about slim b/c altho that isn't how slim saw it, i
knew a lot of the old timers saw it that way, and frankly i didn't want
to deal with it.

but as slim grows, this need will probably just get moe pronounced, so
why not nip it in the bud now and appease all sides?

thx.

[slim] EAC + library wifi = DOA

2008-11-11 Thread MrSinatra

has this happened to anyone else?

i occassionally go to the library to do research etc... since i have a
fancy laptop, i figured hey, what the hell, i'll rip some CDs while i'm
here working on whatever.

well, that would be great except the freedb lookup balks in the damn
library. i have net access via wifi, i can surf, skype, email, and
when i load the CD in WMP or Winamp, they have np getting the info.

but EAC, in the library, can't. it does just fine at home tho.

so whats going on? why can't EAC reach the freedb in the library?

this is the link EAC uses:

http://freedb.freedb.org:80/~cddb/cddb.cgi

and i have on connection error, try a different server checked.

i have had this happen in at least two totally separate libraries. i
think i did get EAC to work ok in one library.

i'm sure its somehow due to the networking rules or config of the
library, but i wouldn't have a clue what to ask em to change to make
EAC work.

i think i am finding this more frustrating than i should be. :(

Re: [slim] Squeezebox 3 + active speakers... + subwoofer?

2008-11-11 Thread Mnyb

If you have two inputs you should use them.
There is not exactly the same bass info in both channels it's stereo !
so using both L R should give you an combined mono signal for all
bass for use in the sub.
Older recordings is mostly mono in the sub bass (so i've heard),
mastering decisions, for cutting it on vinyl.

the sub does it have any rca out ! that would make it even better, but
thats rare.

I would experiment with XO frequency if you have no high pass filter
for the Adam A7's you might want to filter where they naturally rolls
of, so you don't overlap to much

Disagree, sorry Mike :)

I think too many subforums for each product is not the best solution
for 2 main reasons:

1) Posts in the wrong place - a new user has problems using the SBc
with his SBboom, so where does it go? And what if the problem turned
out to be with Squeezecenter after all? On top of this, its always good
to search for answers before posting and this could confusing things.
2) Less likely people will see a thread and help. For example a
Transporter owner might have a problem that a couple of regular Duet
owner could fix. But they dont often bother to visit the
Audiophile/Transporter section, so it slip under the radar.

Apart from that, it does not really make sense to separate some
products and not others - unless they want to divert the potential
customer away for the Classic to the Duet or the SB3 being discontinued
in the near future.

Personally i think General discussion should have been split into 3
subforums - -General Squeezebox Discussion- (ideas, new user questions
etc), -Troubling Shooting- (for problems, and not making potential
owners with question see all these problem threads think its a really
problematic device) and -Off Topic Chat- (for generally non sb related
vhit chat).

Re: [slim] EAC + library wifi = DOA

2008-11-11 Thread Themis

It's due to the firewall settings. I don't know whether you can
configure EAC to use your browser's settings instead.

Re: [slim] New forums...

2008-11-11 Thread Howard Passman

autopilot;358700 Wrote:

Personally i think General discussion should have been split into 3
subforums - -General Squeezebox Discussion- (ideas, new user questions
etc), -Troubling Shooting- (for problems, and not making potential
owners with question see all these problem threads think its a really
problematic device) and -Off Topic Chat- (for generally non sb related
 vhit chat).

I think that when folks are forced to read about products they don't
have, it gets them interested and excited about them. Maybe a good
thing for SB.

By the way, why don't we give the political freak show it's own
sub-forum. Then I don't even have to look through the titles. If you
don't I'm gonna start a religious thread :-) Kidding. I would never
do that. Maybe a Blonde Jokes thread. Oh wait! Analog vs Ditial
thread...

Re: [slim] EAC + library wifi = DOA

2008-11-11 Thread MrSinatra

i don't follow what you mean...

this addy doesn't work either:

http://us.freedb.org:80/~cddb/cddb.cgi

wouldn't both the browser and the above be using the same port? (ie.
80)

and how is skype working?

i don't know how, or if its even possible to get EAC to use the
browsers settings nor do i truly understand what the browsers
settings are.

i do know that after i established the wifi connection, when i opened
the browser i had to click on an i agree button on the libraries
webpage, which it automatically opened to. once i did that, everything
seemed to work, except EAC.

In the meantime, at least make the Duet forum for the SB3, it is after
all pretty much just a screenless SBr and plenty of people use SBc's
with them.

Re: [slim] SqueezeBox3 slow response

2008-11-11 Thread upstatemike

I also decided to go ahead and order one. I have some other apps on high
power PCs that I want to move to lower energy platforms so I know I can
use it elsewhere if it doesn't work out for SC.

My current SqueezeCenter PC also runs Internet Explorer and provides a
constant view of my streaming ActiveX security cameras. I wonder if I
did this on an Eee Box if it would keep things running at full speed?
Or would this additional duty be too resource intensive for the atom
processor and 1G of RAM?

I am also running a PC that takes data from my weather station and
displays it on my TVs. I wonder if an app like that could co-exist on
an Eee Box based music server? And if it did, would it keep the
processor running at full speed?

Re: [slim] Political BS

Mike: Thanks for clearing that up.

Kdf: That's an incredibly melodramatic knee-jerk response to 1 thread.
Why not wait and see what happens first? It's would be a real shame if
you stopped contributing, especially just to make a point.

However, in light of the new subforums, i don't think leaving
SB3/Classic and Transporter discussion in General Discussion is a good
idea. They either need their own forums OR change the Kitchen sink
heading to SB Classic, Transport General Squeezebox talk the make a
new forum called Everything else or Banter and head it Off topic
chat about life the universe and everything, or something along those
lines.

Since it's been proven that moderation is required, I don't think it's
fair to ask Logitech to spend money patrolling an off-topic forum, when
those resources could be used to help people with on-topic problems.

They would need a moderator, paid or not, to read through every thread.
Given the political thread, I'd say that would qualify as 'world's worst
jobs'.

Re: [slim] EAC + library wifi = DOA

2008-11-11 Thread Themis

No, it is not a matter of port.
When you connect to the internet from a company (or a library), to make
it simple, you connect through another computer : a firewall.
Normally, when you connect to the library's network, the browser *may*
get automatically the firewall settings (address and port) but
sometimes it does not. In this last case, you need to change manually
the settings of your browser and indicate the address of the firewall
and its port (usually 8080).

Visibly, EAC doesn't get automatically the firewall settings, so you
need to indicate in EACFreedb options the firewall's address/port.

iSqueeze is so quick and so easy to use IMO it makes a mockery of the
SC. I have always thought that whilst the SC's were good they weren't
quite there, whilst the iphone apps are *definitely* there.

Great news about the shuffle facility on iSqueeze this was the only
