Re: [slim] NAS vs Silent PC

2009-01-20 Thread Letten

We just use our regular PC (a laptop in our case) as it is powered on
most of the time when we are at home anyway. So running SC on this is
practically free.

Why waste more power on yet another PC, be it NAS, Silent PC or any
other lowpower PC? I would only go that route if
1) I really would save power because all other PC's wouldn't be running
when I'm listening to music.
or 2) I had other needs to warrent a NAS like the need for filesharing,
webhosting etc.

[slim] SlimP3 looking for dhcp

My SlimP3 works only occasionally. The Player simply hangs - with the
now playing song on the screen or turns itself off. Then when unplug
the power and replug it in it goes off looking for dhcp and after a
little turns itself again.
Anyone able to solve this divine mystery?

Thanx in advance

What if you have 3000 folders in one directory? For example my system is
like this

Composer last name album title-performer
Beethoven Symphonies-ToscaniniNBC SO
Bach Goldberg Variations-Gould (1955)

etc...

is it difficult to search? i just want to search the folder name field,
not folder name field and filenames.
hopefully there is a video online demonstrating this capability.

What does the SC logs say?

Did it used to work like it should? Any configuration changes?

If it's configured to use DHCP and can't find a DHCP server it will do
that.
Do you have a DHCP server on your network?

The main reasons to go for a low power box for me are -

A) Quick access to music when I get home, rather then having to wait to
switch laptop on etc.

B) 24hr access - For listening late night/early morning without having
to have laptop on

C) Use laptop less - I tend to use my iPhone for a quick browse/emails
in the evening so no real reason to run laptop except for SC

Re: [slim] Thank You Slimdevices / Logitech Community

2009-01-20 Thread 4mula1

One more post of praise for SD/Logi:

My old DVR died on me last week and the replacement I got was a bit of
an upgrade. The two ethernet ports on the back caught my eye. After a
little internet searching I found out that they are functional and what
I can use them for. Dug up my crossover cable and plugged it into the
DVR and SB3 sitting on top of my DVR.

It took me awhile to figure out how to enable bridging (it's in the
setup stupid!) and once I got it everything works like it should.

I knew the bridging feature was a good design choice and could be very
handy. Now I know how handy it is!

I exchanged the internal harddisk with a 320GB version and now have a

Re: [slim] Configuring a wireless router as an access point

2009-01-20 Thread 4mula1

Same story here. When I bought my mom an SB3 I picked up a Linksys
WRT54G. What I needed was an AP+switch, not a router. The dsl modem
they have (same model I have) handles DHCP so I disabled it in the
wireless router. All I did was plug the dsl modem and PC into the LAN
ports and I was in business.

The biggest thing is to disable the DHCP server on the wireless router
if you have one already running on your LAN.

Personally I wouldn't bother with CAT6. CAT5E is so much cheaper and
easier to install. CAT6 is very tempremental and doesn't take tight
curves or imperfect fitting if you are looking to get the full CAT6

CAT7?

To address the original question you might want to check out

[slim] SB Classic Remote

2009-01-20 Thread aynsleyb

Hi,

I've just upgraded a couple of my Classics to Booms. The only small
gripe I have with the Boom is the remote. In itself a great piece of
kit and fit for purpose, but having used the Classic remote for so long
I miss having the numbers, especially for the excellent Lazy Search
plugin.

Does anyone know where I can get my hands on 2 Classic remotes in the
UK. I understand SlimDevices no longer ship to the UK and the Logitech
website doesn't list them. I figure with all the other great ways of
controlling the players, people may not use the original remotes and
might consider putting them on ebay :)

Re: [slim] NAS vs Silent PC

2009-01-20 Thread SJobson

I bought a second hand Intel Mac Mini (1.5GHz Core Solo) on eBay for
about £200 a year ago. Although I've upgraded the processor and memory
subsequently, that's for other purposes; it was fine for Squeezecentre
in its base state.

Music is stored on two external drives, one 2.5 which is USB powered,
the other (usually off) 3.5 and mains powered as a duplicate backup.

I don't think I could have done it any cheaper by using a NAS or
building my own Mini ITX thing, though I'd prefer not to be using
external drives all the time because I'm sure they'll fail. So maybe a
NAS as well, next... ;)

I wouldn't bother with separate sockets for a regular phone line. RJ11

Windows monitors processes. If processes become too busy, windows
reports the message you reported. This can mean the scripts eithers
hangs or the script is very busy making Windows thinks there is
something wrong with it.
To check if ACC is really doing something while running, check if the
log file is growing. If zo, ignore the Windows messages.

You can also mail me a logfile of a moment in time where ACC has been
running for a while.

Re: [slim] NAS vs Silent PC

2009-01-20 Thread Dogberry2

This question comes up so often it should probably have its own forum,
and every time it does, comments that focus solely on Slim/Squeeze miss
the point of when and why a NAS makes sense. If the only thing of
interest to a user is running SqueezeCenter and serving up a few
thousand music tracks, a NAS probably isn't really necessary.

But to those who have other things going on in their lives, a NAS can,
and often does, make sense. I have yet to see a small, low-power PC
that has four (or more) hot-swap drive bays and a footprint of less
than 70 square inches (450 square cm). With five full-time PCs in the
house, plus occasional come-and-go laptops, a central networked file
server that has plenty of capacity and is painlessly expandable makes
sense for accessible, redundant storage of data, including massive
amounts of not only music, but photos, video, business and financial
documents, software, and everything else. It can host nightly backups
of all the computers, and then itself be backed up either on- or
offsite, weekly (or whatever other schedule is suitable). The fact that
it can also do duty as a music server is a side benefit, not its primary
function. It's primarily a storage server (hence the name), and when not
viewed through the narrow lens of SqueezeCenter-only it can, for some
households, be an excellent option. For others, of course, it is
completely unnecessary. But just saying a NAS is stupid doesn't
really do justice to the topic. It's like saying a pickup truck is
stupid just because you happen to live in a condo in the city. Not
everybody has the same needs, interests, skills or experience, and what
makes no sense for some might make very good sense for others.

Last time I was in the UK there was this chain called Tandy (yes, that's
how long ago it was). The chain still exists in the US under a
different name. Long story short, if you can get their remote (or most
any of the OEM's remotes (OEM's name is: All For One)) you can
reprogram them your self w/a bit of hard work through what essentially
is an I2C port (pronounced: eye squared see). It is extremely
flexible, cheap, complex and absolutely unsupported by the manufacture.
In other words: the perfect hacking experience.

The JP1 web site:
http://www.hifi-remote.com/ofa/

One of the remotes that the JP1 techniques works on:
http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3064079

The all for one site:
http://www.oneforall.com/splashfiles/index.html

And if your computer (like so many now-a-days) lacks a classic serial
port, I would recommend buying (instead of building) this USB adapter
(very nicely done for a one person operation):

I'd create sub directories, I used to do that with my iriver (database
wasen't very good layout) So it reduces the number of folders scanned
when you go into it.

With sorted tags and with custom browse no longer need to browse by

Re: [slim] Configuring a wireless router as an access point

2009-01-20 Thread Kyle

I have configured the new router to be an additional one on my system,
which I assume disables DHCP. If I plug the CAT-5 coming from my other
router and the CAT-5 going to my SB3 into the LAN connections, then the
SB3 works fine, and I can sign onto my network and control the SB3 with
my laptop, but I have no internet connection. If I plug the CAT-5 from
my other router into the Internet jack, then I can access the internet,
but my SB3 cannot find Slimserver. It can get onto the network and get
an IP address, but when I choose my desktop computer, it cannot find
Slimserver. Maybe this is a port issue?

[slim] Slightly OT: Idea for an iPhone Universal Remote

2009-01-20 Thread lanierb

Using iPeng on my iPhone has made me wish I could control my whole
HT/stereo with my iPhone. I realize there is nothing available at
present, but wouldn't it be possible to design an app to do this? It
would require one additional piece of hardware that hooked up to your
local network and could send out IR commands, but it seems possible
right? Doesn't Logitech/Harmony seem well suited to implement this?

Also, it might not be the ideal solution, but I think it might even be
possible to design the app to use the SB hardware. (I understand that
you can send IR commands from an SB3 via the headphone out.)

BTW for background I currently use a Harmony 880 and have lots of
complaints about it: the time set problem, the display and tilt sensor
both wearing out (and I've had two with the same issues), the slow
response of some commands, etc.

At this stage when I look at the File Types/WaveInput section the

Re: [slim] Transporter:Flickering Pixel in both Displays, depending on Dimm-State

2009-01-20 Thread jose

This may merely be a faulty connection to the display panel. If you
open the unit you can see a flat ribbon cable from the main board to
the front panel. The cable may not be making proper contact or may not
be seated properly. If have had display problems with my Transporter in
the past and removing and re-attaching the cable sorted this out.
There is a black bar which you raise slightly to remove the cable.
Clean the contacts with a contact cleaner (I used ProGold) and slide
that cable back into the slot. Then press the black bar down to ensure
that the cable connection is tight.
Hope that this sorts it out.

Re: [slim] Configuring a wireless router as an access point

2009-01-20 Thread tedfroop

Here's what you need to do next:
Using a pc or laptop that is connected to the lan port on your
router/ap find the Gateway address. To find it assuming your using
windows - Start, Run, type CMD and enter. In the Command prompt window
type: ipconfig /all and enter.
Open an internet browser (IE, Firefox) and type in the address that
showed as Gateway. Now you should have a login page for configuring
your router/AP. The login and password should be in the manual that
came with the router or on the Manufacturers support site. The support
documentation will also be needed for the next step.

You need to find the dhcp server and turn it off.
You also need to find the WAN/Internet page and give your device an
address. The address should only have one set of numbers that is
different from the ones you got from ipconfig.

So if as an example you got:
address 192.168.0.100
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.0.256
DNS 192.168.0.256

Set the address of your AP as 192.168.0.(any number between 2 and 99)

Once you have saved everything type the new address of your AP into
your browser and save it as a bookmark/favorite, just in case you need
to change any wireless settings down the road.

The plugin is for PC running SC. It will not install on SSODS and will
not work as your PC is generating the audio.

You need to use something like vlc or window media encoder to generate

Re: [slim] Configuring a wireless router as an access point

This could be as simple as needing a crossover cable. It looks like
you're using a standard patch cable to connect one router to another,
which may or may not work, depending on whether either of the routers
have autosensing ethernet ports. The ports on a ethernet hub or switch
are wired differently that a PC network card or your Squeezebox so that
the send and receive pins are matched up when using a standard patch
cable. When you have two devices that are wired the same, like two
routers, you need a crossover cable, a special cable that makes the pin
swap for you.

There is still no need to configure your new router as a router. Make
sure it has a unique IP address outside of the range your DHCP server
hands out, and disable DHCP on it. There is still the issue of the
crossover cable above.

Re: [slim] Configuring a wireless router as an access point

The address to configure the router is 192.168.1.1, which is the same
address for the original router. I think it assigns addresses up to
100, so I guess I need to assign a number above 100? Can you get a
crossover cable with a female end and a male end? The cable attaching
the two routers runs from one end of my house to the other (thus the
need for the access point). I don't want to have to replace the whole
thing. Is there a way to just replace the terminal on one end?

LOL!!

It's up to them, though, and it's really the best way they can track
it.

Yes, you can file a bug if it's affecting only you. They can say no or
they can just ignore it, but you'll never know unless you file it, and
they may never know either.

Before you write a bug, though:

- make sure you're running the latest version. I see 7.3.2 was
released today, please install that. It would be even better if you
installed the latest nightly, but since 7.3.2 was just released, the
latest nightly won't be any different - though that will change as the
days progress.

- temporarily disable all third party plugins. These have bugs of
their own, you need to isolate the problem to the core code first.

- make sure it's reproducible and document exactly what you need to do
in order to get this to happen.

- make sure it's not due to misconfiguration on your part.

- make sure it's not new, intended behaviour. Doesn't sound like it to
me.

- search for an existing bug first! Don't create a duplicate.

- don't take it personally if the developers seem to ignore it, change
its priority to minor, etc. At least it's there, what they do with it
is dictated by their free time, needs and (yes) interest.

I'm not a developer, but picture what it is they do when faced with a
bug list (currently numbered just over ten thousand!) They do look at
each and every new one and look for a duplicate. It wastes a bit of
time if it's a duplicate. They look to see if the issue was solved by
a recent update, this can waste time as well. Then they'll try to
reproduce it on their end. If it turns out to be a misconfiguration
error on the part of the bug reporter, this wastes a LOT of time. If
they can't reproduce it, they may need log info from you. If they can
reproduce it, it gets prioritized. If it's a quick fix, even a minor
issue may get solved immediately. If it's more complicated than that,
it'll get looked at in sequence according to its priority. And yes,
some minor things do get left for quite some time - there are finite
resources and other (perhaps much more important) bugs to work on, as
well as new features. So again, don't take it personally if your bug
doesn't generate a lot of activity - but at least it's documented!

[slim] Problems with Squeezebox controller - update problems

2009-01-20 Thread SW4Peter

Hello all,

I have just bought a squeezebox controller which at the moment I am
just setting it up to work with a squeezebox Boom. The plan is to also
use it with an original SLIMP3 and an old squeezebox.

I have just got it out of the box and it connects to the network fine
and tells me I need to update the firmware. I select begin update and
it puts up the rotating circles with copying Update then verifying
update. After a while it says There was a problem upgrading this
remote. Please try again, or contact support.

Try again - does nothing

back and Begin Update - repeats the above

By fiddling a bit with the buttons (pressing back and home I think) I
can get to the menu that has now playing on it and it can start and
stop the music, but there is no option to browse.

I have tried updating the squeezecenter to Version: 7.3.2

The firmware version shows 1 r1425

Any help would be very much appreciated!

:)

Re: [slim] Configuring a wireless router as an access point

Just try changing it to .2 IP based networks have some serious problems
if there are two devices with the same address.

Have you turned off the DHCP?

[slim] Exclude directories /files during scan

2009-01-20 Thread ajtho2

I use iTunes to manage all my CD / podcast / video and movie content.
The trouble with this is that Slimserver is now picking up the contents
of the
podcasts, Tv Shows and Movies folders when scanning for new content. Is
there a way to exclude these directories or even a way to exclude
particular files by suffix eg. .mov, .m4v etc ?

No I don't have a DHCP server. Purely peer-to-peer. Forgoteen how to

Where are the SC logs located?

Thanks

If it's configured to use DHCP and can't find a DHCP server it will do
 that.
Do you have a DHCP server on your network?

Re: [slim] Configuring a wireless router as an access point

2009-01-20 Thread seanadams

You don't need to disable the router. Just don't connect anything to the
WAN port, disable DHCP, and voila, it's an AP.

It should have a static LAN IP in the same subnet as everything else.
Just put it on a different number from your gateway (eg use 192.168.1.2
instead of 192.168.1.1).

Re: [slim] Configuring a wireless router as an access point

2009-01-20 Thread Kyle

I can't figure out how to assign a different IP address to the router.
When I set it up with the setup disk, I can't change any individual
settings. When I go to the 168.161.1.1 IP address, it takes me to my
old router. When I try to hook it up to my Apple laptop, it crashes
the Apple. When I connect it to my desktop, and disconnect my existing
router, I can't get to the IP address.

I've just ordered a new Duet, and just wondered (as the Duet is clearly

they have different DACs. IIRC the audiophile
journalist ran comparative tests, using borrowed equipment, and decided
that the Duet was microscopically clearer than the SB3. Then he
admitted that he wouldn't be able to hear the difference on his home
system.

Unfortunately I can't where I read it

Re: [slim] rebuffering failed

2009-01-20 Thread RolandG

I had the same problem when I first installed the equipment. Assuming
it was a network reception problem, I moved both receivers, and the
problem went away.

Squeezecenter Help is quite useful. Its Server and Network Health
option allows you to monitor network reception and buffer fullness at
each Receiver, and tells you if there have been any network drop outs.

Re: [slim] Best Router to Use With Squeezbox?

2009-01-20 Thread bobkoure

More powerful how? Stronger radio signal?
I'd second Pat's suggestion of a WRT54GL with alternate firmware as you
can dial up the radio output a bit.
You can also use higher-gain or directional antennas as they're on
somewhat standard connectors (SMC?)
Google for HyperWRT or tomato along with WRT54GL - no point
recapitulating the whole thing here.

Be careful on the connectors. They are actually RP-SMA
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SMA_connector

Its really a reverse gender, but the term of art is reverse polarity.
the terms male and female refer exclusively to the inner pin or
socket of the connectors, not the screw threads

I second dd-wrt as well and would not consider any router that can't
support it. See dd-wrt.com I run it on a linksys wrt350n and wrt54g.
Read the compatibility list carefully.

Re: [slim] Transporter:Flickering Pixel in both Displays, depending on Dimm-State

2009-01-20 Thread A.D.B.

@ jose : Thanks for the tip !! My thoughts about the problem are going
in the same direction. I will call Logitech-Support, because of the
warranty time (2 years or 3 years). Then i will decide, what I do.

@seanadams : I have made some ScreenShots, in the attachement. The
pixels are not always there, e.g. when i power on or connect to
squeezecenter. But they´re always at now play.., or normal titel
screen. If i go in an other menu (e.g. Artist browse), they are gone.
It makes also an difference, if the Trannsporter is playing music or
not. The pixels are get flickering in different frequency, depending on
play or pause.
Screen_2 is a little bit shaky. It is only 1 pixel !
